D
uring the season of Advent (which includes the 4 Sundays before Christmas Day,) it seems like there are signs of Christmas everywhere. Retail shops are elaborately decorated to remind us that Christmas is just around the corner. Several homes in my neighborhood are covered in lights, and decorated with giant cartoon characters, or Santa’s sleigh, complete with life-size reindeer. Our December calendars are filling up fast with parties, children’s programs, and gatherings of friends and family. But, all of our business just adds more stress and anxiety to our lives, if we don’t stop and remember the reason for the season. Marty Haugen’s wonderful Advent hymn, “Awake, Awake, and Greet the New Morn” reminds us of the true reason for the season; the birth of our savior. Awake! awake, and greet the new morn, an angel heralds its dawning, sing out your joy, for Christ will be born, God's gift, this Child of our longing. Christ comes as a baby weak and poor, to bring all hearts together, to open wide the heavenly door, and live here inside us forever. Rejoice, rejoice, take heart in the night, though winds blow wildly and cheerless, the rising sun shall crown you with light, be strong and loving and fearless. Love be our song and love our prayer, and love, our endless story, may God fill every day we share, and bring us at last into glory.
The reason for the hope, peace, joy, and especially the love we have in our lives … is Jesus the Christ. Jesus gave his disciples (and us) a new way of living, when he said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35 NIV) As we celebrate his birth at Christmas, let us remember to stop, and lay aside all the shiny trappings of the season, so we can remember the old, old story; a story of love so great that the Lord would come and dwell among us, in order to demonstrate his great love for us. Now that’s Good News! May your Christmas season be blessed with hope, peace, joy, and most of all – Love!

But I Wanted a Baseball Glove
T
odd was excited when a package arrived from his grandparents one week before Christmas. When he’d talked to his grandmother on the phone, he had told her he was going to play baseball next year. He said he would need a new baseball glove if he was going to play. The box that came from his grandparents had a package with his name on it. Every day Todd would feel the package under the Christmas tree. It wasn’t exactly the right shape for a baseball glove, but it felt the right weight. He knew it had to be a glove. On Christmas Day, Todd was excited as he opened all his gifts one by one. At last he came to the package from his grandparents. It was a pair of shoes. “But I wanted a baseball glove,” he said. “1 told Grandma I was going to play with a real team this year.” “Todd, remember that these shoes are a gift to you,” said his mother. “Your grandparents thought about you. They even got the right size. It is a nice gift.” “But I wanted a baseball glove,” he said. “You’ll still be able to have a new glove,” said his mother. “You already have some money.
You can save more from your allowance. I’m sure we can find some jobs for you to do if you need to earn some extra money to buy the glove.” “But Grandma and Grandpa could have given me the glove,” said Todd. “They gave you a nice gift,” said his mother. “Don’t let your need for a glove keep you from enjoying what you received. A gift is something people want to give. Your grandparents wanted to give you the shoes. Maybe they thought it would be better for you to earn the glove for yourself.” “I guess you’re right,” said Todd. “Now I can pick out exactly the kind of glove I want.”

“Get a Plan to Pay Off Debts”
n a past column, I mentioned that the first step in gaining control of your finances is to “get a plan” called a monthly budget so you can track your income, expenses, and (hopefully) savings and giving. Once you have a budget and are living by it, next be sure you have an emergency savings account (cash) in the bank in case a financial crisis arises (and it will, sooner or later). Once you have your emergency fund, it’s time to formulate a plan for paying down your existing debt. In order to gain momentum and stay motivated in this, many financial planners recommend paying off debts in order from smallest balance to largest balance, regardless of the interest rates being charged. This may sound counter-intuitive: why not pay off the highest interest rate first? The reason is simple—most people tend to get discouraged unless they see immediate progress, and then the entire debt payoff plan comes to a screeching halt. Keep yourself motivated by watching those smaller debt balances ($90 to the dentist, $200 to the cell phone bill, $300 on an old medical bill) disappear as you knock them out quickly with the extra cash you’ve “discovered” by making a monthly budget. As these smaller debts are paid off, continue to apply their old payments toward your next largest debt, paying off that one and then moving on to the bigger debts. This is commonly referred to as “the debt snowball” because, much like rolling snow to build a snowman, you gain financial traction as you pay off debts and keep applying the old payments toward your next debt. For instance, once you pay off that $90 dentist bill in the example above, take that same $90 next month and apply it toward the $200 cell phone bill; with any luck, that bill will be paid off in another month or two. Then, take that money which used to go toward the dental and cell

phone bills and apply that toward the $300 medical bill. That bill, too, will soon disappear, and you can move on to the next largest bill. Typically, the last bills to go are paying off the car and finally the house if you have a mortgage. By the time you have no debts except your mortgage, you’ll be feeling very “wealthy” indeed. One question that commonly arises is, “Should I consider a Debt Consolidation Loan in order to pay off all those separate bills and have only one monthly payment to make? Wouldn’t this simplify my life and help me to stay focused?” The answer is a tentative “yes,” with some important considerations. First and foremost, do not take out a debt consolidation loan unless you immediately decide to cut up your credit cards and make some major financial changes such as paying with cash, check, or debit cards. I have seen countless times when someone will get a Debt Consolidation Loan with the intent of paying off their old bills and credit cards, only to max out those same credit cards again. Now, they have “double trouble”—they still have the credit card debts and now they have another new debt, the consolidation loan, to pay off as well. Not smart. But if you’re serious about getting out of debt and changing old habits, then a Debt Consolidation Loan may be the way to go. The other caution is to be sure to investigate all costs associated with taking out one of these loans—origination fee, closing costs, interest rate, etc. I’ve found that in Cleveland alone these rates can vary widely from bank to bank or credit union. So be sure to shop around and get at least several different quotes to compare. Of course, the ultimate goal is to pay it off quickly and never go down the path to debt again. Be blessed!

I took the red pill yesterday, and God showed me how deep in my heart the rabbit-hole goes. It started with what seemed like a pretty simple question, Am I a word from God? First, I have a confession to make. On the one hand, I know that I am loved by God. I know that He values me, has a plan and purpose for me. On the other hand, I still run into doubts in my heart. Places where I suddenly suspect, no matter how many times I have sung Jesus Loves Me, that I am more of an afterthought to God than precious in His sight. I stumbled into one of those darkened chambers in my heart as I wondered if I was a word from God. So, I began to think about the fact that God formed me in the womb (Isaiah 44:2), and that I was fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). I love the phrase David used, “you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13). This was helpful. It reminded me that I did not end up here randomly. I am not an accident. I am part of God’s purpose. However, I still wondered if God formed me as a mere piece to His beautiful puzzle. Don’t get me wrong. Being a piece in God’s puzzle is an incredible honor, more than I deserve. But is that all that I am? Or am I something more? Not just something God will plug into the picture, but someone God speaks about? This got me thinking about God speaking. We see how He spoke things into existence at creation. Does He still speak things into existence? Or did He only need to get the ball rolling? Did He actually speak me into existence? You into existence? Or does He just like to quietly knit things together? I started looking for references to God speaking individual people into existence. I was reminded that He “brought us forth by the word of truth” (James 1:18). I thought about how we are called “epistles of Christ” (2 Cor 3:3). And of course Jesus Himself is called the Word of God (John 1:1). Thinking about the first chapter of John reminded me of the third chapter of John, where we learn that we are not just born once, but twice (John 3:3). Our second birth is birthed by the Spirit, which blows like the wind (John 3:5-8). So, God breathed me into my new birth, and breathing is a whole lot like speaking. Yet, in all of this I still felt unsettled. So, I began to wonder, IF God spoke me into existence what word did He use? I began to think about my name. And I remembered that God actually has my name written on the palm of His hand (Isaiah 49:16). I also remembered that to the one who overcomes God will give a white stone with a new name

written on it that no one understands except the one who receives it (Revelation 2:17). And that the new name that I will receive will not only be written on the white stone, but on me as well (Revelation 3:12). My faith was growing throughout this process. But I was still unsure about God actually speaking my name, saying it out loud. Then I was reminded that God not only speaks over me, but actually sings over me (Zephaniah 3:17). I began to get a little scared thinking about God actually speaking out loud, calling my name. But then I was reminded of this: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1). That last verse sort of settled the matter in my mind. I began to wonder what it sounds like to hear God say my name. And just the thought of it sent the love of the Father down to the bottom of that hole in my heart. I accepted that my name is a word, which means that I am a word. I am a word spoken from Heaven, spoken by God. Once I had accepted that I was a word from God, that He had spoken me into existence, that I had left His lips, I was filled with such an awesome sense of the presence of God that I thought I might audibly hear Him speak my name. I did not hear my name, but what I heard in my heart was a promise about what God does with words like me, words like you. And it wrecked me. I was undone. This is what I heard: As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You are a word from God, spoken from heaven. All of your days were written in His book before your body was ever formed (Psalm 139:16). Your name is written in heaven (Luke 10:20). When you left the lips of God your purpose was guaranteed. You will not return to Him empty, but will accomplish what He desires and achieve the purpose for which He sent you. Receive yourself with thanksgiving today. “For everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it, but receive it with thanks” (1 Timothy 4:4). You are more than body, soul and spirit. You have been named in Heaven. And you are more than a name. You are a word spoken by God.

o this is probably not what you think it will be. I was a little devious sneaky misleading mischievous with the title of this blog post. But, stick with me here! Don’t leave yet! Ok, let me back up. Here is what is true about me: I am a bit of a hoarder. No, not the kind of hoarder you see on television. Well, I guess not…I have never actually watched “Hoarders”. I do tend to hold on to things… Sentimental things like the Easter basket my mother made for me when I was in grade school. Frivolous things like the little black miniskirt that I have owned for fifteen years (yes, for real), but I haven’t worn in three years and probably will never wear again…but what if? It went into the “giveaway” pile one year and then I saw an article that said minis were back in and I quickly snatched it back out with more proof why I should never give anything away! What I deem to be practical things like the one hundred plastic Easter eggs I keep in a plastic bag in my garage because I refuse to purchase more each year when my children bring home notes from their teacher that read “Please send 10 eggs filled with candy…” Yes, that’s true, too. I also fill them with Halloween candy my children didn’t eat. That’s true, too. Oh, good grief, are you still my friend? I know that was TMI. Here is what is also true about me: I want to be a giver. More than anything I want to be a generous person. I want to love on people, invite them into my home, into my life, into my space, and share…my life, my time, my family, my STUFF. So many of us believe the lie that we have to be in a certain position in life to be givers. Others of us fill up our time until there is no margin…no time leftover for us to be givers. Many of us are afraid and we hang on tightly to our things because…what if? It isn’t about a measly miniskirt…it is about what if we give something away and later we need it…we REALLY need it…because we have been through hard times and we know what it is like to REALLY need something. And, some of us hang on to things because we are skeptical of people who are needy or we are afraid that giving will make things awkward. We don’t like the messy-ness of “thank you’s” or the clumsy exchanges. We would much rather keep it, throw it away, or, at best, neatly drop it in the Goodwill box. I am not sure why, but I am wanting to do something different this Christmas. For a couple of weeks now I have been praying about what that different approach might be. Blame it on reading 7 by Jen Hatmaker. Blame it on our tight budget,

which is probably begging for some creativity this expensive season! Whatever the impetus…I came up with my plan today. The Great Christmas Giveaway So, here are the rules. 1. I am going to give away 6 things every day from now (November 15th) until Christmas day. Why 6? It is really an arbitrary number, but I based it on the fact that I have 6 people in my family. By the end of this deal as a family we will have given away 40 items per person. 2. These things cannot be bought. I must find them in my home. 3. EXCEPTION #1: I can bake or cook something for a person or family that is made from items I bought at the store. 4. EXCEPTION #2: I can give time to a volunteer opportunity with 30 minutes counting for one item. 5. When possible try to make it personal. Sure it counts if I give it to Goodwill. I just want to try to put a face on my giving. I want it to be relational and personal when possible… which takes more work. I could drop off a load of clothes to Goodwill…or I could call my friend who works at a school with a larger percentage of children living below the poverty line and find out if a child she knows needs clothes the size I have. I could drop off the baby clothes Hillary has outgrown at Goodwill or I could call around our church to find out if someone could use them there. One takes a few more minutes and is a bit more of a hassle, but will feel very different. I am going to blog about it every few days from now until Christmas and it would really, really, really mean a lot to me if one or ten of you joined me. Ecstatic really. Because I (we…you and I) have entirely too much stuff. This sounds hard, but as Jen Hatmaker discovered, it really isn’t. I will be able to find plenty of things to give away. And I will feel better for it. Why the game? Because we are a competitive, game obsessed, sports loving culture… myself included. And, it holds me accountable and makes it more fun… like a challenge! I said I would blog about it. I will start with today. My mother and her husband, Dan, have adopted a single mother this holiday season and asked if I had any baby clothes to share as she is ex-

pecting in two months. I could have counted each item I gave as the six, but the truth is I had not fully developed the idea of The Great Christmas Giveaway yet to even know I was choosing the number 6. I set aside the bag of clothes, but the rummaging through baby clothes led me to set aside another bag of Christmas clothes for a friend who is expecting a baby at Christmas. There’s 2. While I was putting clothes away in my two older daughters’ closet I came across two sweaters with their initials on them that they have outgrown. Now, let me tell you about these sweaters. Every time my husband sees these two adorable sweaters I get a look. Several years ago I went to a clothing sale at a friends home…you know those kinds of sales where they put out the boutique items and everyone “oohs” and “ahhs” over the expensive super cute clothes? And, then you just have to buy something because you have eaten all of the really yummy thoughtful adorable snacks they put out for you to nibble while you shop. Oh, you don’t have to buy anything? You don’t owe them that? Well, this missionary raising money to be able to EAT didn’t realize that so I looked for the least expensive item in the magazine and ordered. When Jon saw the price tag he asked if I bought the girls a car or a sweater. He may or may not have said that the girls would have to get married in them, too. Yeah, well I don’t go to those parties anymore. I know my limit. Like an alcoholic at a bar, I CAN’T say “no”. So, if you are one of those people who have those super cute, oh so fun shows at your house and you wonder why I never come…well, there you go. So, I’m looking at these sweaters in my daughters’ closet and I know they are too small. They don’t fit anymore. Haven’t fit in probably two years. And, I am wondering why I didn’t name Hillary “Estelle” or “Laney”. I sigh. I take them off the hook. I think of two precious friends with little girls who have names that start with an “L” and “E” and put them in plastic bags. 3,4
I have a friend whose family has been sick this week and this same friend made me supper last week when I was sick so I have made a little extra food for them tonight. I put the plastic bags with the sweaters and the Christmas clothes in the van along with the supper for my friend. 5 I have the idea that every day I need to just take something…ANYTHING…out of our cluttered garage and give it away. We completely cleaned it out over the summer and if you saw it now you would think I was lying. Giving something away from the garage every day sounds like an excellent, practical plan that would really benefit us in the long run. I open the garage and pick up a random pair of brand new Teva sandals my husband has never worn and never will. Why? Because he just doesn’t like Tevas. Because he has a pile of other shoes and probably only wears two pairs of the pile each week. vI have tried to give the Teva sandals away with no luck. To Goodwill they will go. I put them in the van. 6 I also notice this random little stool that I have seen in our garage for years and never knew where it came from. It is a little bit of a nuisance and I tend to trip over it. I should wait to give it away on another day since I already have my 6 quota filled, but my math isn’t good on the fly so I throw it in the van, too. I make my runs and return home a little lighter. I feel incredible. This is going to be amazing. It just might be the best Christmas ever. Clearing out this space just might make more room for experiences, for people… for Christ. So tonight my husband comes home and I fill him in on my little adventure and how it began today. His first response? “You gave away my camping stool?!?!” Let the adventure begin! The Salvation Army Cleveland: Stands for Change! By Melissa Snyder

lease don’t forget to support The Salvation Army’s mission of kindness when you pass by the kettles. Each kettle is a representation of change in the life of individuals. Each Christmas season the red signature kettles can be seen and the bells can be heard all over the community. For more than 100 years the kettles have been a staple all over the world. They first originated as a way to feed the hungry. Today, they represent a warm meal, a coat for someone who is cold, shelter, Christmas gifts for the less fortunate, a hand up for the down and out, and hope. Salvation Army advisory board member and bell ringer volunteer Judi Williams and her husband Denny have volunteered to ring a bell for the kettle campaign for three years. When it is their one hour shift to ring a bell, they play Christmas carols, dress in holiday attire and greet people with friendly smiles. “I’m a real nostalgic person, and so every time I see the red kettle and bells out it kind of takes you back to your childhood memories,” Judi said. “Mom used to take us downtown, back when you still shopped downtown, and
I’d see the bell ringers out. I think it just kind of pulls on the heartstrings when you see that scene,” she said. The Williams family encourages others to ring bells and to dress up in their festive Christmas clothes, put on Santa hats, reindeer antlers and even sing. According to Denny, everyone who comes out to ring wants to come back and do it again next year. “We asked people to use their imaginations and to have fun with it, and that was a good thing. It’s very rewarding to take a one-hour time slot and know how that’s going to help pay an electric bill or buy a coat or a toy for a kid at Christmas,” Judi said. There are multiple opportunities to get involved with The Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle season including bell ringing, adopting an angel and hosting a kettle. The kettle campaign runs until December 24. Angels can be adopted at K-mart in the Bradley Square Mall before Dec. 2. To adopt an angel, simple select a tag from the Christmas tree at K-mart. It will have the age, gender, clothing sizes and gift wishes on it. Another way to bring to change to someone’s situation this Christmas season is to sign up at onlineredkettle.org and begin a virtual kettle.

hristmas traditions can range greatly from one family to another. I feel like my family is still rather young, so as I try new things each year, it is hard for me to determine what my boys will look back on and embrace as their family traditions. What I want them to remember no matter what, is of course the whole point of Christmas…GIFTS! I know you are thinking I have lost the true meaning of Christmas, but have I really? The gift of a new born child is very precious indeed. The nine months of waiting fill lives with much anticipation. For those who are adopting, sometimes the wait can be much longer than nine months. During the long wait, you are filled with many emotions. Sometimes excitement, and sometimes a little dread. You may wonder how you will ever be able to care for this child. How easy it might be to forget the treasure of a new born child during the late night feedings, diaper changes, etc. For some who are unable to have their own children, they would see those late night feedings nigght fe eedin ngs as a gift… something th they want hey w ant sso o desperately. I can imagine tthe he night Jesus was born, orn, Mary might have b been een thinking, “Anywhere but a stable!” She was aabout bout to deliver the most p prerecious gift to the world, d, and and the only place available le was was a stable filled with animals… maals… which probably didn’tt smell sm mell heavenly.

But that is where the very first gift of Christmas was given…to you and to me. A gift straight from heaven for the entire world! “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.” John 3:16, The Message Understanding the depth of God’s love and the depth of His gift brings me closer to Him daily. Because of that closeness, I love Christmas time even more each year. So of course, I want our family to have at the forefront of our minds during Christmas, what the true gift of Christmas is. I want my children to be filled with anticipation and excitement during this season. As any parent knows, the excitement of Christmas for a child is off the charts! So as a parent I get to jump on board with the excitement and celebrate in my own heart as well. I arrived as a new teacher and coach at River View high school near Warsaw, Ohio, in 1974. There I met Andy Duda, the varsity football coach. I noticed initially that he was a physically strong man, and I learned very soon that he was also spiritually strong. Any player on Andy’s team knew that we acted like men, we worked hard, and we never used profanity. Andy taught those values to his players and modeled them to everyone. My parents do not use profanity and taught that to me as well. People notice when you do not use profanity. Have you ever had someone apologize because they used profanity around you? They noticed that you do not need it to communicate. I learned by example from Andy Duda and from my parents that a Christian does not use words that our Creator would not appreciate. We need to use words that honor Him in all we do. I am now in my thirty-second year of teaching and

have never forgotten that lesson. I still try to live up to it. As a football and basketball official, I hear words and phrases from coaches that are personal put-downs of the players and words that dishonor our Creator. I encourage anyone who is around young people to work hard to set a good example and to remember it starts with the tongue. Bear in mind Philippians 4:8, and use words that are noble and pure and admirable.

k, here’s the deal. The 12 Days of Christmas goes through all the days, and ends with the partridge in a pear tree. Follow the same repetitive concept with The 12 Days of Fitness, add a new workout everyday and end with one set of 100 jumping jacks. Day 1 - 1 set of 100 Jumping Jacks
Day 7 - 7 Pushups
Day 2 - 2 x 1 min. Planks There are a few variations to planks, lets start with the starting push up position and hold for 1 minute. Be sure to keep your body straight, do not stick that tooshie in the air.... thats cheating!
Day 8 - 8 Calf Raises It is best to do these while standing on stairs if you have them.
Day 3 - 3 sets of 10 Lunges (10 each leg) Day 4 - 4 min. of Jogging in Place.
Day 9 - 9 Squats, Put a low chair or use a coffee table to bring your rear end to, when you squat. It will help you to do a proper squat, and help to make sure you get a good deep squat. Just remember to never let your knees go past your toes!!
Day 5 - 5 Burpees Sorry, but there is no good way for me to explain how to do these, but thanks to modern technology you can YouTube it! It will be worth it.

1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup powdered sugar 2 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups all purpose flower 1 cup finely chopped pecans Âź teaspoon salt Powdered sugar

1. Heat oven to 325F. 2. Mix Butter, 1/2 cup powdered sugar and vanilla in large bowl. Stir in flower, nuts, and salt until dough holds together. 3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 4. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until set but not brown. Remove from cookie sheet. Cool slightly on wire rack. 5. ou never really think about words that would devastate you. Spoken words that would rock your world and leave you numb. You think maybe something bad will happen when you get older, much older. Never do you think that at 23 years of age, in the prime of hope, life and love would you be told you have cancer. This is not just any cancer, but angiosarcoma. A cancer of the blood vessels that only has affected 10 or less people in the United States in 2006. This is what happened to my friend, colleague, and fellow sportsmen Michael Schwarz. Michael worked and ministered with me at Central Baptist Church in Sanford, Florida. We found a mutual friendship in sharing and loving Christ, playing softball and enjoying God’s Great Outdoors together. Michael and I began to hunt during our time off. He assisted me in doing many Sportsmen For Christ hunting retreats as a guide. During our down time from both ministries and families we were in the woods of Volusia County, Florida. There we pursued Cypress swamp wild hogs, pineywood whitetails, dodged hidden rattlesnakes in palmettos and watched the wiley Osceola turkey meander across the open flatlands. It was a great place to experience the outdoors. This place allowed Michael to harvest his first 200+lb wild hog and trophy Osceola turkey. However, over my three years in Florida, we just could never connect with a Whitetail. It seemed like an impossible task to put both deer and Michael together. In the winter of 2005, God had plans and moved my family here to Tennessee. That next year, our dear friend and landowner, Robert Hirt, passed away from his own personal fight

with cancer. It was devastation for both Michael and I in the loss of Robert. We both let go of hunting for that year. With the move and the loss of Robert, it just did not seem right. Michael and I kept in contact and when I found out that he had an illness concern we were not too alarmed. He’s strong, young and of good health. Then the news came. CANCER! A rare and deadly cancer. It quickly took its toll on him. Repeat treatments, change in treatments, loss of weight, low iron, high potassium, multiple hospital stays, loss of hair and financial burden. Life quickly changed and dreams were dampened. In between one break in treatments Michael came to Tennessee to visit his family. His parents were now working with me in ministry. They thought it would be a great break to come and just get away. I sat in their living room with him one night, just the two of us. We chatted about meaningless stuff until he asked me one question, “Do you think we can get me a deer… before…?” I immediately said, “Yes” not wanting him to finish the sentence. The feelings of loss over came me. My young friend was talking about death. I knew I had to do my part to see his dream fulfilled. “Yes, we can get you a deer and this season we will try”. Michael headed home and finished this series of treatments. He was running a life-race. The cancer was taking an incredible toll on his body. My friend had lost over 50 lbs. He was pale, weak and tired. I remembered…that I promised to do my part. So plans were made. Our dates were set for the last two days of muzzle loading season and the beginning of gun season in Alabama. There, we would be in a stand hunting with
a dear brother in Christ, Emory Steedly, on his brother’s, L.C. and Kaye Steedly’s, famous farm. It was a place for hopes and dreams to come true. On the second night of our muzzleloading hunt, it was still, cool and quiet. Michael was placed in a box blind overlooking a small green field that meandered back into a hardwood swamp. We both knew he had one shot – one chance this night. I left him there and headed up the hill to a small field overlooking the bottom area. I knew if he shot I would definitely hear him from that vantage point. It was about 30 minutes; just good enough to get settled in when the quiet was broken with a “BOOM” from the bottoms. It was Michael. I bolted from my stand back down the hill to the entry road to his location. As I quietly walked towards his stand, there he was standing – waiting for me. He confirmed he had hit it but lost it in the muzzle smoke. As we walked to the spot, we saw great dig marks in the mud and dark blood on the grass. It was an easy trail 30 yards deep into the hardwoods. Just a couple steps further and there she laid…a great doe with a perfect heart shot from 50 yards. Michael and I hugged, cried and celebrated. Finally, his first deer to harvest. It was a great feeling of celebration and accomplishment for both of us pulling his deer out of the woods. On September 21, 2008 Michael lost his earthly fight with cancer. He fought a great fight. He is truly missed daily by family and friends. There isn’t a day that goes by when I can be in the woods that I don’t think about his ministry and our experiences together. I truly thank the Lord for teaching me about hope, determination and opportunity through Michael. May we all remember and also be a catalyst…Before!

hen I was a boy, Christmas meant a whole lot more to me than perhaps to my friends. The reason is that I grew up poor. I jokingly tell people that every time my Dad got a raise at work, they increased the poverty level index also. So Christmas was that special time of the year when we received presents out of the blue. We didn’t get the really exorbitant gifts. And we did get clothes sometimes. But we still were delighted to receive the “abundance” of toys and games and treasures which I could use to pay off my mortgage if I had saved them to sell on Ebay nowadays. Christmas wasn’t much about giving. True, we did give occasionally. But on a very limited income, we kids didn’t have a lot of cold hard cash floating around. (The most I understood liquid assets was a good glass of milk.) Most of the presents were one-way from parents to children. They gave, we received. We liked it that way. Mom usually ended up with a handcraft from elementary school -- a photo of me stapled into construction paper with glitter on it. Do you remember some of your favorites gifts you received as a kid? I do. I think I’d still like a good Tinker Toy set -- to play with my kids, of course. I also remember my first successful case of genuine begging -- or nagging -- for a gift. The local dollar variety store had some really cool Civil War plastic toy soldiers. I let my Mom know that I wanted those for Christmas. My mother was encouraging me to consider a more economical set of green Army men. But those were so late 1960s. I had to have the Civil War figures. So I begged, cajoled, pleaded, begged some more. You know the routine, I imagine. “Pleeeeeaaaasssseeeeee!” repeated over and over and over. When my Mom checked out with her purchases, I caught a glimpse of those soldiers. I felt a strong degree of satisfaction: I had d won! I was getting what I wanted! But even at such a young age, I felt a pang ng of guilt. I wasn’t satisfied with something else which fit the family budget. I had to have the more expensive item. It’s amazing azing what w a very young mind really can comprehend. When I opened the package on Christmas day, I knew new what w I was getting. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy playing with them. th them m. I did. But they weren’t as sweet of a childhood triump triumph ph to me as I had imagined. They were, after all, only ly plastic plasstic figurines. I’m not sure I was even really thankful for them them. m. Fast forward a few years, some jobs, some relationships onship ps and even some kids thrown in the mix. I even heard d a sermon serm mon or two on giving. I began to understand that there was indeed as inde ed a joy in taking my hard-earned money and using it to bring pleasure p to someone else. I remember buying my Mom a dress (there’s a long story in that one) and giving it to her for Mother Mother’s r’s Day. (Hmm. Wonder if SHE remembers that one…) I reme remember ember seeing the delight on my first child’s face when he would open up his Christmas gifts. It brought a deep sense of satisfaction atisfacttion to me. Weird, huh. Jesus once said that “You receive a greater blessing when ng whe en you give than when you receive” (Acts 20:35). That’s t’s certainly an upside down view of Christmas than thee one I was raised with. To be truthful, it’s an upside down own view on the facts of life most of us were taught. Yet, there it is, words of Christ in red in the appropriatee versi version. ion. Does it make sense? Should it make sense? I guess ess it depends on whether or not we are like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. He longed to understand things, but he didn’t have a brain. Sometimes we just don’t use ours.

Looking at things from God’s perspective, He created us in His image and likeness. God is the Creator, the first Giver, the Originator of all life. He created and gave a perfect environment to mankind, and then He gave throughout history all the way up to the cost of His beloved Son’s life to buy back our lives from the foolish and selfish things we had done. In the midst of His darkest hour, Jesus didn’t clench a tight fist but offered an open palm and gave His blood while we tried to take His life from Him. The only way His life can be fulfilled in us is for us to let it flow OUT of us to others. That is the heart of giving: to let God’s love do what it was meant to do, to flow from person to person in this sick and weary world. Only then can we be truly fulfilled. This Christmas season, I urge you to take a real look at what you are doing and ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” If it is more blessed to give than to receive, then it’s time that we begin to even look at WHAT we are giving instead of just buying stuff that may not work in a month. Grandparents, instead of spoiling your grandchild with too many toys, why don’t you instead give them a real piece of your own life. Wrap up a favorite tool, write down a family recipe, or give a coupon for a special outing. Then spend time with the grandchildren and talk about what that tool meant to you, how you used it and how it came in handy. (WAIT! DISCLAIMER! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT give a six year old boy a hatchet!) When you share the recipe, arrange a time to show how you make it, and then make a double batch that you and your grandchild can give to someone less fortunate. Parents, remember that it’s not about competing with the neighbors. Take it from a poor kid: we learned to have fun with minimal toys, and we developed our imaginations imagination and interaction with each other in the process. Maybe it’s time to teach your children about the joys of giving by having them participate particiipate in local efforts for food banks, Christmas boxes children whose parents are in prison or even for orforr ch phans. There are still orphans around, and James rephan p minds us that visiting the fatherless and widows is the mind m essence esse ence of pure, unblemished devotion in God’s sight. Children, Childr ren, if you can read this, you’re not too young to unthat your parents have a lot of stress on them. What derstand d tha can you u give them to really make their hearts happy? A clean without room with hout being asked? A set of coupons for chores to be the coming year? Or here’s a novel thought: cashed in throughout th hrou that you would like to use your Christmas gifts to tell Dad and Mom M help someonee else who is less fortunate than you are. Hey, Christian! Christian n! You Y call yourself a follower of Jesus. What do you Is it a kind word instead of impatience?
