Shining Light…

Dr. Maurice R. Harvey Dr. Maurice R. Harvey is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and a licensed Minister. He is an Adjunct Professor, Entrepreneur, and a Social and Political Activist.

Early Life & Education Dr. Harvey was born in Tampa, Florida. He is the oldest son of, Dr. Hazel S. Harvey and Dr. Jerry N. Harvey Sr. (deceased). He was raised in the Historic District of Carver City - Lincoln Gardens and educated in the Hillsborough County public schools, graduating from Jefferson High School. With definite plans on his next level in life, which was to become a 3rd generation Tuskegee Institute (University), Scholar, he received a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Scholarship and was college bound. While at Tuskegee, he earned his Bachelor of Science in History.

Military Career & Accomplishments After graduating, Dr. Harvey was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. This experience set him on a 26-year military career that spanned both active and reserve duty and gave him an abundance of life experience. While enlisted, in both active and reserves he served in various positions and military units, from 2nd Armored Division to Special Operations Commands.

New Career & Continued Education Upon completion of his active duty requirement, he began working for the Hillsborough County Clerk of the Circuit Court as a purchasing agent and progressively advanced to the position of General Manager I, this position placed him in charge of all the satellite offices. During his tenure with the Clerk’s Office, Dr. Harvey completed his Master of Public Administration with Troy State University, after leaving the Clerk’s Office; he worked as a Senior Logistician, for Support Systems Associates Inc. (SSAI) a defense contractor. While working there, he realized he had the knowledge, entrepreneurial skills, and resources to go into business for himself and founded, Business Consulting & Training Solution LLC, a management-consulting firm. Dr. Harvey’s professional experience also includes working with St. Petersburg Housing Authority and Jacob Engineering formerly known as Sverdrup Technology.

Dr. Harvey’s career in education began in 1997 with the University of Phoenix where he taught in the College of General and Professional Studies and was an online adjunct with Nova Southeastern University. In 2001, he became the local Campus Dean for the West Florida Campus School of Business (Graduate and Undergraduate) where he earned his Doctorate in Organizational Leadership and Management (2006). In addition to teaching, Dr. Harvey proudly served on Dissertation Committees at University of Phoenix, Walden University, and Cappella University. Presently, Dr. Harvey teaches with the Tapia School of Business Graduate Program at Saint Leo University he has been on staff since 2012.

A Calling to Fulfill Dr. Harvey dedicated his life to Christ at the age of twenty. Before entering the military, he received his initial license to preach the Gospel in 1980 and preached his first sermon at his family’s church, Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, Tampa, FL. His faithfulness in the A.M.E Church has allowed him to serve as a Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant District Superintendent, Tampa Florida Conference, and as a Trustee, and a Steward. Presently he is serving as a Licentiate Minister at his home church, Mt. Olive A.M.E Church.

In 2014 he accepted a position on the Board of Directors with Volunteers of America, Florida. In 2017, Dr. Harvey was ordained as a minister with Volunteers of America (VOA), which has granted him the opportunity to minister to Veterans, Elderly and Special Needs individuals.

Social and Political Activist Dr. Harvey’s social and political interest was influenced by the stories shared and the support given to him by his grandmother, Vivian Seniors; his mother, Dr. Hazel S. Harvey, and his aunt, Dr. Alma Hires He was also inspired by his conversations with Dick Gregory, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Toure), and Bernard Lafayette.

Politically, Dr. Harvey served as past President for eight-years and currently as Vice President of his hometown neighborhood’s civic association; Carver City - Lincoln Gardens Civic Association Inc. -In, 2016, Dr. Harvey lead the way by working with his community members, and USF Institute of Black Life to bring about a change for the present and the future of the community; which was being engulfed by big businesses in the Westshore District.

Through their hard work and dedication, the Carver City/Lincoln Gardens area was established as a Historical Community in Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa.

Socially, Dr. Harvey’s goal is to bring about social change throughout the community and in the lives of people in need. In continued efforts to support the masses, he has dedicated himself to several elite organizations. He is a Life Member of the Reserve Officer Association, Life Member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity – Tuskegee Institute (University), and an Active Member of the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge of Florida PHA, West Hyde Park Lodge 327 Price Hall affiliated.

Life’s Pleasures & Scripture to live by His life’s simple pleasures are playing golf especially with his dear friend, and longtime civil rights activist and organizer Bernard Lafayette and taking walks in the park and throughout his community. Dr. Harvey has also had the pleasure of writing his doctoral dissertation entitled, Black Business in Tampa from 1963-2006. His latest accomplishment was writing a book with his mother Dr. Hazel S. Harvey, A HOME REMEMBERED: The Story of the North Boulevard Homes 1937-2017.

Dr. Harvey’s is the perfect example of Jesus’s parable in, Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

His life’s works show he has sincerely answered the call and has received Christ in faith. ###

Book Signing Event Dr. Hazel S. Harvey has been the driving force behind many outstanding people and important events and education in the Tampa community. She was the first to integrate the School system at the instructional and Supervisor Level. Presently she serves as a Commissioner of the Tampa Housing Authority and has served chairperson of the board. Dr. Harvey worked as an adjunct professor at Nova University and the University of South Florida as an intern supervisor. She serves as a Director of ENCORE which is a mixed housing developed. The writer is a member of the Tampa Alumni Chapter of Links Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Tampa Tuskegee Alumni Association and former member of the Board of Girl Scouts West Central Florida Suncoast Scouts.

LABOR DAY—Monday, September 3, 2018 What it Means Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1894 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1895 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

PATRIOT DAY—Tuesday, September 11, 2018 The History of Patriot Day On September 14, 2001, George W. Bush proclaimed that September 11 be established as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. By October 25th of that year, Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) and 22 co-sponsors (11 Democrats and 11 Republicans) introduced a bill into the United States House establishing 9/11 as a national day or mourning. This bill, Joint Resolution 71, passed the house and the Senate unanimously on the 30th of November. President George W. Bush then signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001. The following year, President Bush proclaimed September 11, 2002, as the first official Patriot Day.

Commemorating Patriot Day On 9/11, many people will observe a moment of silence at 8:46 A.M Eastern Time. It was at this time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Many people also lay flowers and wreaths on the graves of loved ones that were lost on that day. Communities all over the United States hold special events and church services on this day. As directed by the President, the United States Flag should be displayed on the homes of all Americans, at half-staff, as well as U.S government facilities all over the globe on this day.

GRANDPARENTS DAY— Sunday, September 9, 2018 The History of Grandparents Day Grandparents Day is always celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Take the time to honor your grandparents with these ideas! Marian McQuade hoped to establish a national day that would honor grandparents, and in 1970 she began a campaign to do so. McQuade raised awareness about senior citizens throughout the 1970s. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day. Each year, the president issues a proclamation to keep the tradition going. Grandparents Day has both an official flower and song.

The official flower is the forget-me-not, and the song is Johnny Prill’s “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.” Both were chosen by the National Grandparents Day Council.

Grandparents Day Activities: Interview one of your grandparents. Cook for your grandparents. Visit the elderly in a nursing home. Many schools celebrate Grandparents Day with special activities or assemblies. Students often invite their grandparents into the schools for a day, and the children find creative ways to celebrate their grandparents. neighborhood convenience store, which sits on the corner of 30th Street and Osborne Avenue was established by the late Leslie W. Edwards. During the early 70's when migrant work was at its peak, Edwards saw many workers from the Caribbean Islands migrating to Tampa for seasonal work. Seeing an opportunity to provide foods and healthcare products from their native land and to serve the local neighborhood, Edwards Grocery was established.

Today, the Edwards children continue the legacy of their father. Praise is an expression with enthusiasm for words and songs setting forth the glory, and goodness of God through worship with honor and thanksgiving.

According to Genesis 29:35 Leah the wife of Jacob conceived and bore a third son for her husband, and she said: "Now I will praise the Lord." Praise ye the Lord because the Lord is good, he has made us, and we are his people. We as Christians praise God with the word "Hallelujah" this word has not been found in scripture, but the word "Alkluia" is the Greek form of hallelujah. Hallelujah, praise ye the Lord.

Praise the Lord with a whole heart and sing praises to his holy word for God is the king over all the earth.

The hymnologist wrote, "O magnify the Lord for he is worthy to be praised." Even Jesus and his disciples sang praise him after the last supper, and when they had sung, they went out into the Mount of Olives.

Psalm 107:31 reads, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” Praise the Lord for in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name, one. Sing ye with the spirit and sing with the understanding of praise.

Glory belongs only to one God.

He enjoys watching Law and Order, and often role plays as the District Attorney. Davontae often leads his family’s devotion and prayer hour. He enjoys the old devotional songs like; “Glory, Glory Hallelujah” and “I’m so Glad Jesus Lifted Me.” Favorites: His favorite scripture is Psalm 23 and during bedtime prayer he never forgets to pray for his family and church members.

Faithful Servant: Davontae is very special to God and has an anointing on his life.

He is very loveable and loves to let you know he loves you. He is also very observant and helpful. Davontae attends Lennard High School and does well academically and is often called upon as the Teacher’s Assistant. He has also been awarded the “Good Citizen Award” on several occasions. Davontae has also been cast to assist the camera crew in his school’s rendition of the American musical "HairSpray."

Favorites: Saying “God Bless you!”, his favorite friend is Kyle and his favorite pet is Chole.

Faithful Servant: Davon is a special gift from God and is learning how to pray and trust God. Affectionately called; Manny, he is a very kind and mild tempered young servant. He is a student at Lennard High School and works very hard in school and is recognized as an Honor Student and has been awarded the "Good Citizen Award" on several occasion. Davon often reminds his family that God helps him to make good grades and good friends. He is a Member of the ROTC at Lennard High School and had the honor of marching in the Martin Luther King Jr Parade. He also attended the Captain’s Ball in his dress Blues. In addition, Davon is also a member of the Thespian Society at Lennard High School. He has performed in his school's rendition of the play "Beauty and the Beast" and is now being scripted for a part in his school’s rendition of the American musical "HairSpray."

1. STRESS RELIEF: Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging relaxation, yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

2. PAIN RELIEF: Yoga can ease pain. Studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain, and other chronic conditions.

3. BETTER BREATHING: Yoga teaches people to take slower, deeper breaths. This helps to improve lung function, trigger the body’s relaxation response and increase the amount of oxygen available to the body.

6. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: Yoga (even less vigorous styles) can aid weight control efforts by reducing the cortisol levels as well as by burning excess calories and reducing stress.

7. IMPROVED CIRCULATION: Yoga helps to improve circulation and, as a result of various poses, more efficiently moves oxygenated blood to the body’s cells.

8. CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING: Even gentle yoga practice can provide cardiovascular benefits by lowering resting heart rate, increasing endurance and improving oxygen uptake during exercise.

9. FOCUS ON THE PRESENT: Yoga helps us to focus on the present, to become more aware and to help create mind body health. It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time and memory.

About the author...

Debra A. K. Thompson is a freelance writer who lives in Riverview, Florida with her husband. She currently writes short stories and articles for a local magazine called Good News Magazine. Debra has also written numerous specialty articles for Flavor Magazine, as well as feature articles for a popular Christian magazine, The Gospel Express.

She is a prolific songwriter who founded and continues to coordinate the Gospel Songwriters Music Workshop, which is an annual conference for aspiring and veteran songwriters. Debra obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Florida and a Master’s Degree from Florida State University. She served one term on the Pensacola City Council and she was appointed to the Florida Rehabilitation Council by Governor Jeb Bush.
