Shining Light…
M
ary Upshaw, playwright, hails from the clay hills of Clayton, Alabama; a small town consumed with poverty and injustice. She is the only child of sharecroppers, Rosie Ross and Harvey Ross (deceased). Mary relocated to Tampa at an early age and has since been actively involved in church and the community. Since early childhood, she has felt an anointing to motivate, inspire, and help people of all race, creed and color. In 1985, she obeyed the direction of the Holy Spirit in uniting her family and friends by successfully forming the annual Ross Family Reunion. It was at one of these celebrations that she was first inspired to display her playwright talent by presenting the forerunner of the powerful gospel play, “I Know I’ve Been Changed!” The reception was so overwhelming that the ever-burning desire to write, produce, and direct plays was rekindled. She then went on to write other skits and plays including, “On A Mission,” “Let’s Get Excited About The Lord,” “I Been Changed,” and “Positive Changes On A Gospel Journey,” which are strong sermons, or rather wake-up calls to all of us. Each plot reveals real life experiences - A Purpose - and A Spiritual Journey. The reality will make you cry! The humor will bring on much laughter! And, the storyline is sure to captivate your attention! Mary’s inspiration to write gospel plays was driven by her childhood struggle. She watched her parents ‘faith in action’ as they worked sometimes sick; in the rain, in the cold, in the heat for pennies a day just to survive. They then walked miles or by mule and wagon to church on Sunday morning singing, “Amazing Grace.” Mary and her family lived in small wooden inhumane houses with rags and pace boards covering windows and doors to help keep them warm. Buckets and pans were placed throughout the house to catch water through a leaky roof when it rained. Mary’s best dress was made from flour sack material. They had no electricity, no telephone, and no resources. Kerosene lamps provided their light. Mary’s lifestyle gave her a determination to help make this world a better place to live. Today, she and her family are head of their own production ministry “Mary Ross Upshaw Production”; and happy to say, they have received many life-changing testimonies and raving reviews from their drama ministry. The playwright is proud that her son-in-law, Michael Hines, Manager and Playwright’s daughter, Jacquelyn Hines, Assistant Producer have held this office since the debut of their first play more than 20 years ago; as well as her son, Tommy Upshaw, Jr., who played the role of Jesus. Mary is grateful that they continue to have a hard working and devoted cast. Mary is retired from Delta Air lines after 26 years. She holds with honors an Associate of Arts degree from Hillsborough Community College with a major in Mass Communications. She is recipient of several certificates and awards from her employer and various organizations. Most recently, she received the 4th Annual Citizen Recognition “Certificate of Achievement” honor bestowed by the General Baptist State Convention of Florida, Dr. Henry J. Lyons President, in honor of her outstanding work in the category of Fine Arts. She is currently writing her first book, which is an autobiography. Mary is also the proud grandmother of Shawana Exuma (Jermaine), Michael II, Mylo, and Mario Hines, and the great grandmother of Michael III. She is a member of New Salem M. B. Church, Dr. Henry J. Lyons, Pastor and Directress of Fine Arts Ministry. She is also a member of the Deaconess Ministry, Sis. Stephanie Harvey, President; the Women of Grace Ministry, Sis. Deborah Martin, President; and the Shepard’s Ministry, Sis. Cassandra Tucker, President Mary’s struggles have helped her to put the value of life into perspective. Her purpose for writing plays is to educate, motivate, inspire, and help others overcome obstacles. We are blessed with a gift that comes with the responsibility to learn and to share. When we do unto others as we would have them do unto us, and when we make a conscious decision that respect, honesty, and integrity are non-negotiable; we as a nation, we as a people, can make a positive difference in the world in which we live. It is Mary’s vision that her ministry through drama will touch and help someone come closer to Christ, recognize our purpose, lay aside all weights of hate, malice, and prejudices as we work together toward this common goal. ### For Ad Info Call (813) 337-9860 * www.leeprintpublish.com

Unity
I and my father are one God the Father God the son God the Holy Spirit John 10:30
Unity, being one is truly unity. Consider this a circle has more unity than a row of dots. Unity has been spoken of first in the Old Testament, which describes the union of a man and a woman, which was instituted by God in the Garden of Eden (Adam & Eve) Genesis 2:24 acknowledges that therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh. Unity is the joining of the Holy Spirit, which two become one in flesh and in the spirit. It is good and it is pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity! Jonathan and David, Abraham and Lot, dwelled together in unity. Man has been instructed by God to dwell together in the unity of the spirit in the unity of the faith endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. We all are united in Christ Jesus. Finally, be all of one mind having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, and be courteous. 1 Peter 3:8
Teach Them – And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. Exodus 18:20. KJ

A Gospel Songwriting Q & A By Debra Thompson
Deaconess Agatha Holton
Diane: Is the Praise Team a good thing in a church? Debra: The Praise Team can be a great asset in worship service because they can lead the people into an atmosphere of worship. The Praise Team should not be a place to showcase talent or to entertain. The purpose should always be to enhance praise and worship. If you have questions you would like Debra to answer, please send them to: thechurchbulletin@yahoo.com or P.O. Box 11722 St. Petersburg, FL 33733

Stay Healthy 10 Steps to Starting a Community Garden 1. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6.
7.
8. 9.
Organize a Meeting Of Interested People, Determine
whether a garden is really needed and wanted, what kind it should be, whom it will involve and who benefits. Form a Planning Committee, This group can be comprised of people who feel committed to the creation of the garden and have the time to devote to it, at least at this initial stage. Identify All Your Resources, Do a community asset assessment. Approach A Sponsor, Some gardens “self-support” through membership dues, but for many, a sponsor is essential for donations of tools, seeds or money. Choose A Site, Consider the amount of daily sunshine (vegetables need at least six hours a day), availability of water, and soil testing for possible pollutants. Prepare And Develop The Site, In most cases, the land will need considerable preparation for planting. Organize volunteer work crews to clean it, gather materials and decide on the design and plot arrangement. Organize the Garden, Members must decide how many plots are available and how they will be assigned. Allow space for storing tools, making compost and don’t forget the pathways between plots! Plan for Children, Consider creating a special garden just for kids–including them is essential. allows them to explore the garden at their own speed. Determine Rules and Put Them In Writing, The gardeners themselves devise the best ground rules.
