Shining Light…

Deacon Rufus R. Spencer Jr.

ufus R. Spencer Jr. was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He is the third of four children (Ronnie, Sandra deceased and Ruth) born to the late Rufus R. Spencer, Sr. and Lynette Spencer (both deceased). As a child, he recalls at the age of three hearing his father waking up 4:30 am every morning like clockwork, thanking the Lord for another day. He states hearing his father’s oneness with the Lord gave him a sense of closeness to Him and began praying just as his father did. As a Tampa native, Rufus graduated from Plant High School class of 1971. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, FL. Upon earning his degree, Rufus returned to Tampa and was employed by Busch Gardens Africa, (now known as Busch Gardens Tampa) as one of the world famous “Mystic Sheiks of Morocco” band members. This adventurous career provided him with the opportunity to travel throughout the states doing what he loves and that is being a talented and gifted musician. Rufus enjoyed a 35-year long career as one of the iconic band members and is now enjoying the luxuries of retirement life. He is the prestigious owner of Spencer Productions. As owner/operator, he uses his gifts and talents as a music producer, songwriter, musician and as an instructor. As an instructor, he offers drum lessons and a variety of recording techniques to aspiring musicians of all ages. Raised in the church, Rufus has been a member of New Salem M. B. Church all of his life. He was baptized at the age of eight; ordained a Deacon in 1999 under the leadership of Rev. Readon, Pastor and has been involved in a number of church endeavors. He has served as a Trustee, Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Chair of the Corporation and is now presently serving the Kingdom of God as a Musician, Chairman of the Building Committee and Property Manager of their new location in Temple Terrace, under the leadership of Dr. Henry J. Lyons, Pastor. Upon accepting his new leadership role, he has worked countless numbers of hours in leading the way of the relocation of New Salem after the devastating fire and the renovating process from start to finish of their new church home. When asked what inspires and motivates him; his immediate response was “The way the Lord has moved in my life.” He states he is a living testimony of the word of God and he stand in awesome respect of His power. Rufus is also inspired by the Old Testaments scriptures and enjoys laboring for the Lord.

Rufus is the husband to Shevawn Spencer together they are the proud parents of three sons Andrew (Tampa), Bryan (decease) and Marques who is serving our country as a Marine in South Carolina. Tis the Seasonâ€Ś Christ has Risen! Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016 A day of fasting, is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity. It occurs 46 days (40 fasting days, if the six Sundays, which are not days of fast, are excluded) before Easter and can fall as early as February 4th or as late as March 10th. Ash Wednesday is observed by many Western Christians, including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".

Lent, Wednesday, February 10, 2016 thru Saturday, March 26, 2016 Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial. This event is observed by Christians in the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus' crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional, to draw themselves near to God. Throughout Christendom, some adherents mark the season with the traditional abstention from the consumption of meat, most notably among Roman Catholics. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days which, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent, before beginning his public ministry, fasting in the desert, after which he endured temptation by the Devil. In most of the West, it begins on Ash Wednesday. Different Christian denominations calculate its length differently.

Tis the Seasonâ€Ś Christ has Risen! Holy Week 2016, begins Sunday, March 20, 2016 ends Saturday, March 26, 2016 Holy Week in Christianity is the week just before Easter. In the west, it is also the last week of Lent, and includes Palm Sunday, Holy Wednesday (Spy Wednesday), Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), Good Friday (Holy Friday), and Holy Saturday. It does not include Easter Sunday, although traditions observing the Easter Triduum may overlap or displace part of Holy Week or Easter itself within that additional liturgical period.

Palm Sunday 2016 Sunday, March 20, 2016 Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. In many Christian denominations, worship services on Palm Sunday include a procession of the faithful carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, yew, willow, and olive. The Sunday was often named after these substitute trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday.

Good Friday 2016 Friday, March 25, 2016 Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday,[1][2][3] or Easter Friday,[4][5] though the last term properly refers to the Friday in Easter week. Good Friday is a widely instituted legal holiday in many national governments around the world, including in most Western countries (especially among Anglican and Catholic nations) as well as in 12 U.S. states. Some governments, such as Germany, have laws prohibiting certain acts, such as dancing and horse racing, that are seen as profaning the solemn nature of the day.

The Resurrection of Jesus ! Easter, Sunday, March 27, 2016 The resurrection of Jesus is the Christian religious belief that, after being put to death, Jesus rose again from the dead. It is the central tenet of Christian theology and part of the Nicene Creed: "On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures" In the New Testament, after the Romans crucified Jesus, he was anointed and buried in a new tomb by Joseph of Arimathea but God raised him from the dead and he appeared to many people over a span of forty days before he ascended into heaven, to sit at the right hand of God. Paul the Apostle declared that "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures".(1 Corinthians 15:3–4) The chapter states that such a belief in both the death and resurrection of Christ is of central importance to the Christian faith: "And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain."(1 Cor 15:14) Paul further asserted "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied."(1 Cor 15:17–19) Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday, the day of his crucifixion. Easter's date corresponds roughly with Passover, the Jewish observance associated with the Exodus, that is fixed for the night of the Full moon near the time of the spring equinox. Forgive

If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways” Then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. II Chronicles 7:14 Forgiveness Is: to give up resentment of or claim to requital for <forgive an insult> b : to grant relief from payment of <forgive a debt> to cease to feel resentment against (an offender) : pardon <forgive one's enemies>. To give up resentment against or stop wanting to punish (someone) for an offense or fault; pardon. To relent in being angry or in wishing to exact punishment for (an offense or fault).

Matthew 6:12 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? Luke 5:21 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallow up with overmuch sorrow. 2 Corinthians 2:7

According to the reading of God’s word it proves that the Lord our God is good and faithful and always ready to forgive his people. He is plenteous in mercy to his people which are called by his name. None deserves his forgiveness, but mercy and forgiveness belongs to our God. Luke 5:24 “When Jesus said, but that ye may know that the son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sin.” This is a true saying, when God forgives, forgiveness is truly forgiven. Here is one of the many examples of Jesus’ teaching about forgiveness (Jesus said unto the sick of the palsy) I say unto you arise and take up your couch and go into your house. By one’s faith God does remarkable and amazing things for his people. Who can forgive sin, but God alone. Justification is the forgiveness of sins and the gift of righteousness, forgiveness gives whosoever a second chance to reconcile their lost relationship between man and God. God faithfully forgives and show love to all mankind. Jesus cried father forgive them for they know not what they do, and the Lord our God said, where fore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be given unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be given unto me. And whosoever speaketh a word against the son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Matthew 12:31,32

"Savor the Flavor of Eating Right" March is National Nutrition Month, when the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reminds everyone to return to the basics of healthy eating. It is also the time of year when the Academy celebrates expertise of registered dietitian nutritionists as the food and nutrition experts. National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. In addition, National Nutrition Month® promotes the Academy and its members to the public and the media as the most valuable and credible source of timely, scientifically-based food and nutrition information. Stay Healthy Smothered Chicken Casserole Prep 30 min. Total 1hr 5min. Serves 4

What You'll Need 1 tablespoon oil 4 boneless skinless chicken thighs 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 6 oz uncooked angel hair pasta 1 can (10 3/4 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup 1 1/4 cups half-and-half 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 2 cups frozen broccoli florets, cut into smaller pieces 3 slices precooked bacon, crumbled

How to Make It 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 2 1/2-quart casserole with cooking spray. In 10-inch skillet, heat oil over mediumhigh heat. Add chicken thighs; sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Cook chicken 8 to 10 minutes, turning once, until golden brown and juice of chicken is clear when thickest part is cut (at least 165°F). 2 Cook pasta as directed on package; drain. In large bowl, mix soup, half-and-half and paprika; reserve 3/4 cup sauce. Stir in cooked pasta and frozen broccoli. 3 Place pasta mixture in casserole; top with chicken thighs. Spoon reserved sauce over chicken thighs. Top with bacon. Cover and bake 20 minutes; uncover and bake 10 to 15 minutes or until sauce bubbles.
