This issue is all about love! Love for the Lord our God, love for our ancestors who advocated and died for our rights as we celebrate “Black History Month” and love for one another as commanded by God. God loves us and I love you. I love you for being supportive of this body of work God has appointed me to do. Your heartfelt words of encouragements, dedication and continued support is much appreciated.

I am delighted to feature my handsome youngest son Joshua Edwards as this months “Shining Light” this is the beginning of his journey… stay tuned for part two.

As you read this month’s issue it is my prayer, you feel the love I have poured into it, I also pray you continue to share the love with everyone that comes your way because if we show love , we shall reap love.

Shining Light…

Joshua F. Edwards Joshua Edwards is the youngest child to the union of Isaac and Linda Edwards.

Born November 19, 1998, Joshua was set apart and giving a divine appointment on his life as a leader and a valued team player.

Joshua is a junior at Steinbrenner High School located in Lutz, Florida where he strives to be an outstanding student-athlete. During his tenure at Steinbrenner, he has competed in both football and track & field.

As a student, he is focused on maintaining his highest possible GPA in efforts to enter the College or University of his choice after graduating.

As a football player, he has been a starting varsity player since his freshman year.

Although his assigned positions are Safety and Corner. His coaches frequently uses him on Special Teams, as a Running Back and as a Receiver because of his raw and gifted athletic ability. During the 2015 football season, Joshua received a injury to his right knee which required surgery. Although the injury was a negative blow that put him out for the season, he immediately turned that negative into a positive and is using it as an opportunity to comeback stronger and faster for the 2016 football and track & field year.

As a track athlete, he is a two-year track letterman, he competes in the Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, 4x100 Meter Relay, 4x400 Meter Relay, 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. Joshua has earned his personal best in the 4x400 Meter Relay docking 53 seconds split time, 23.3 seconds in the 200 Meter Dash and he qualified for the Regional Meets for the Long Jump and 4x100 Meter Relay his freshman year as well as the Triple Jump and 4x100 Meter Dash his sophomore year.

Joshua’s name has made many list of records and rankings during the 2013, 2014 and 2015 football and track & field seasons placing him in the top five of many categories for his school’s division. In 2015 he was crowned Junior Year-Home Coming Prince. Despite all of the hype, he remains humbled because he knows and fully understands too much is given, much is required.

Joshua is an active member of Steinbrenner High School’s, Fellowship of Christian Athletes – “FCA” focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging individuals to make a difference for Christ through the powerful medium of athletics. Under the direction of his coaches, Joshua has served as a volunteer with his teammates at St. Joseph Children Hospital and other non-profit originations throughout the Tampa Bay area.

His hobbies include fishing, working out and bike riding. Joshua has also enjoyed playing rugby for the US Rugby Tampa Crew.

Joshua states his parents, his siblings (Samuel, Isaac Jr and Cislyn) and his pastor Larry D. Billue Sr. are his greatest supporters.

He is a role model and mentor to many young boys. His strong and courageous mind, body and spirt speaks volumes over his life.

Honoring... Black “Church� History The term black church or African-American church refers to Christian churches that minister to predominantly African-American congregations in the United States. While some black churches belong to predominantly African-American denominations, such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), many black churches are members of predominantly white denominations, such as the United Church of Christ (which developed from the Congregational Church of New England.)

Most of the first black congregations and churches formed before 1800 were founded by free blacks - for example, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Petersburg, Virginia; and Savannah, Georgia.

The oldest black Baptist church in Kentucky, and third oldest in the United States, was founded about 1790 by the slave Peter Durrett.

After slavery was abolished, freed blacks continued to establish separate congregations and church facilities, creating communities and worship in culturally distinct ways. They had already created a unique and empowering form of Christianity that creolized African spiritual traditions.

Slavery Evangelical Baptist and Methodist preachers traveled throughout the South in the Great Awakening of the late 18th century. They appealed directly to slaves, and numerous people converted. Blacks found opportunities to have active roles in new congregations, especially in the Baptist Church, where slaves were appointed as leaders and preachers. As they listened to readings, slaves developed their own interpretations of the Scriptures and found inspiration in stories of deliverance, such as the Exodus out of Egypt.

Both free blacks and the more numerous slaves participated in the earliest black Baptist congregations founded near Petersburg, Virginia, Savannah, Georgia and Lexington, Kentucky before 1800. The slaves Peter Durrett and his wife founded the First African Church (now known as First African Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky c. 1790). The church's trustees purchased its first property in 1815. The congregation numbered about 290 by the time of Durrett's death in 1823.

Following slave revolts in the early 19th century, Virginia passed a law requiring black congregations to meet only in the presence of a white minister. Other states similarly restricted exclusively black churches, or the assembly of blacks in large groups unsupervised by whites. Nevertheless, the black Baptist congregations in the cities grew rapidly and their members numbered several hundred each before the Civil War. While mostly led by free blacks, most of their members were slaves.

In plantation areas, slaves organized underground churches and hidden religious meetings, the "invisible church", where slaves were free to mix evangelical Christianity with African beliefs and African rhythms. They turned Wesleyan Methodist hymns into spirituals. The underground churches provided psychological refuge from the white world. The spirituals gave the church members a secret way to communicate and, in some cases, to plan rebellion.

Slaves also learned about Christianity by attending services led by a white preacher or supervised by a white person. Slaveholders often held prayer meetings at their plantations. In settings where whites supervised worship and prayer, they used Bible stories that reinforced people's keeping to their places in society, urging slaves to be loyal and to obey their masters.

In the 19th century, Methodist and Baptist chapels were founded among many of the smaller communities and common planters. During the early decades of the 19th century, they used stories such as the Curse of Ham to justify slavery to themselves. They promoted the idea that loyal and hard-working slaves would be rewarded in the afterlife. Sometimes slaves established their own Sabbath schools to talk about the Scriptures. Slaves who were literate tried to teach others to read, as Frederick Douglass did while still enslaved as a young man in Maryland.

Throughout U.S. history, religious preferences and racial segregation have fostered development of separate black church denominations, as well as black churches within white denominations.

Historically Black Denominations African Methodist Episcopal Church The first of these churches was the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). In the late 18th century, former slave Richard Allen, a Methodist preacher, was an influential deacon and elder at the integrated and affluent St. George's Methodist Church in Philadelphia. The charismatic Allen had attracted numerous new black members to St. George's. White members had become so uncomfortable that they relegated black worshipers to a segregated gallery. After white members of St. George's started to treat his people as second-class citizens, in 1787 Allen, Absalom Jones, also a preacher; and other black members left St. George's.

They first established the non-denominational Free African Society, which acted as a mutual aid society. Religious differences caused Jones to take numerous followers to create an Episcopal congregation. They established the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, which opened its doors in 1794. Absalom Jones was later ordained by the bishop of the Philadelphia diocese as the first African-American priest in the Episcopal Church.

Allen continued for some years within the Methodist denomination but organized a black congregation. By 1794 he and his followers opened the doors of the all-black Mother Bethel AME Church.

Over time, Allen and others sought more independence from white supervision within the Methodist Church.

In 1816 Allen gathered four other black congregations together in the mid-Atlantic region to establish the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church as an independent denomination, the first fully independent black denomination. The ministers consecrated Allen as their first bishop.

African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church The African Methodist Episcopal Zion or AME Zion Church, like the AME Church, is an offshoot of the ME Church. Black members of the John Street Methodist Church of New York City left to form their own church after several acts of overt discrimination by white members. In 1796, black Methodists asked the permission of the bishop of the ME Church to meet independently, though still to be part of the ME Church and led by white preachers. This AME Church group built Zion chapel in 1800 and became incorporated in 1801, still subordinate to the ME Church.

In 1820, AME Zion Church members began further separation from the ME Church. By seeking to install black preachers and elders, they created a debate over whether blacks could be ministers. This debate ended in 1822 with the ordination of Abraham Thompson, Leven Smith, and James Varick, the first superintendent (bishop) of the AME Zion church. After the Civil War, the denomination sent missionaries to the South and attracted thousands of new members, who shaped the church.

Historically Black Denominations Church of God in Christ In 1907, Charles Harrison Mason formed the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) after his Baptist church expelled him. Mason was a member of the Holiness movement of the late 19th century. In 1906, he attended the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles. Upon his return to Tennessee, he began teaching the Pentecostal Holiness message. However, Charles Price Jones and J. A. Jeter of the Holiness movement disagreed with Mason's teachings on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Jones changed the name of his COGIC church to the Church of Christ (Holiness) USA in 1915.

At a conference in Memphis, Tennessee, Mason reorganized the Church of God in Christ as a Holiness Pentecostal body. The headquarters of COGIC is Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee.

Love

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:7,8

Love Is: The unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: as (1): the fatherly concern of God for humankind (2): brotherly concern for others: a person's adoration of God.

God’s people are to become beloved children of God. The word of God urges Christians to become more of his likeness as beloved children born of God.

Love Scriptures:

Whosoever loves is born of God, and knoweth God. To know God is to know his only begotten son whose name is called Jesus Christ.









John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 15:9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.”

John 15:12-14 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

God showed his greatest love toward mankind, and he gave his only begotten son to the world so that everyone might have the opportunity to receive his gift of love, and believe on his name, and love one another through witnessing to others about his provision for the worlds salvation.

Now, to truly know the truth of God is to really learn to love him and love one another as he loves us all. So let’s fear God and keep his commandments.

Love one another is just one of the many commandments in the Old and New Testaments commanded by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Observing these commandments will be most effective to our faith, our relationship with God, and with one another, and for the world.

Beloved, love not the world neither the things that are in the world, But…  Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy might. Deut.6:5 & Matt 22:37  And Thou shalt love the stranger as thyself. Lev.19:34 & Deut.10:19  But Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Lev.19:18 & Matt.22:39  And Thou shalt love thy enemies. Matt.5:43,44 & Luke 6:27  And love the brotherhood. 1Peter 2:17  And that ye love one another as I have loved you. For this is the message that ye have heard from the beginning that we should love one another. Beloved of God owe no man anything, but to love one another. Glazer Tampa Stories Recording Day, The Museum is proud to partner with Tampa-Hillsborough County Library System to bring real stories from some of Tampa’s famous African American citizens. The Library System curated stories from the oral history collection that kids can experience themselves at the Museum. Kids will have their own chance to be part of Tampa’s history by recording a story of their own as part of the Library System’s digital oral history collection. Librarians will be on hand every Friday in February at Noon through 2 pm to record kiddos’ stories.

Recordings will be archived in the Library collection and available for listen through the Library System’s online digital collection.

National Heart Disease Awareness Month Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and get on track to better heart health.

What is Heart Disease?

Coronary artery disease (CAD), also called heart disease or ischemic heart disease, results from a complex process known as atherosclerosis (commonly called "hardening of the arteries"). In atherosclerosis, fatty deposits (plaques) of cholesterol and other cellular waste products build up in the inner linings of the heart’s arteries. This causes blockage of arteries and prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart (ischemia). There are many steps in the process leading to atherosclerosis, some not fully understood.

What are the symptoms of heart disease?

The classic symptoms of heart disease include a sharp or squeezing pain in the center of the chest, pain in the neck or arms and feelings of indigestion.
