WELCOME Autumn’s well and truly with us. I love autumn/winter fashion. The colours are vibrant with rich autumnal hues and the fabrics are sumptuous. Don’t get me on to the opaques and boots – I don’t know about you but they go with everything and are oh, so comfy.

In this issue we’ve got some great features. We focus on Aberdare, Pontypridd and Llantrisant. They’re all great places to find that special gift for Christmas and you’ll be supporting your local businesses. We also feature the world-famous Nos Galan Road Race that takes place each New Year’s Eve and celebrates the legend of Guto Nyth Brân. Turn to page 16 to find out how you can be part of this nostalgic event. Go for it! Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor jennifer@valleyslife.co.uk

Shine On Valleys Life featured a miner on the cover of our Summer issue as part of a feature celebrating our Valleys heritage and proud industrial history. On September 15th, South Wales lost four of its best in the tragic event that unfolded in Gleision Colliery in the Swansea Valley. Phillip Hill, 45, Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39, sadly lost their lives. As Christmas approaches our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of those lost at Gleision Colliery, and anyone who has lost a loved one or loved ones in the last year.

Mark Evans ‘Lets The Light In’

Dare Valley Country Park all set for Christmas

Welsh Baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans’ debut album Let the Light In launched on Remembrance Day 11.11.11 with proceeds going to the Welsh Guards in Afghanistan.

Dare Valley Country Park, on the outskirts of Aberdare, is an area of spectacular landscapes and an abundance of wildlife.

Mark has always worked as a singer, having trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The last two years have, however, been pretty tricky in many ways for Mark, and for much of last year he was forced to work on a building site. Mark launched his debut album at a special dinner concert at Miskin Manor Hotel on November 11.

A network of walks and trails crisscrosses the 500-acre park all set against the dramatic glacial cwm. The Country Park also has an all year calendar of things to see and do for all the family, including, canoeing, archery and cycling. And after the exertions relax in the warm and friendly ‘Y Cwtch’ Café. In the lead up to the festive season, Santa’s magical Christmas cottage will be opening its doors to visitors. Mon 28 Nov - Thurs 22 Dec 9.30am - 4.30pm. £7.50 per child, which includes meeting the big man himself plus a present and photograph! PONT YPRIDD

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park One of the valleys real treasures, Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, is an area of beautiful parkland just a stone’s throw from the busy Pontypridd town centre. Peaceful avenues of mature trees and colourful flower gardens make it a perfect retreat from the shopping hustle and bustle. The Park hosts a full programme of activities throughout the year, including the Full Ponty and the Big Bite and Santa’s popular Christmas Grotto will again be welcoming visitors for a magical festive treat.

“There’s lots to love about Ponty. See page 14 to find out more.”

Open weekends from: Saturday 26 Nov - Sunday 18 Dec Saturdays, 11am - 5pm Sundays, 12pm - 4pm Open daily from: Monday 19 - Sat 24 Dec 11am - 5pm (Christmas Eve 11am - 4pm)

If you haven’t visited Center Parcs, Longleat then you’re in for a big surprise. The recent multi million pound makeover has made this good Center excellent. We opted to stay in one of the newly styled lodges and were more than delighted to see what changes had been made. The lodge had a definite boutique hotel style to it, thanks to Tara Bernerd, Designer of Target Living. The kitchen had all the mod cons you could ask for.

As a family, we were regular visitors to Center Parcs in Longleat. We visited at different times throughout the year and thoroughly enjoyed the break. However on our last visit, we felt that we’d outgrown what the parc had to offer. We also felt that the rooms were looking rather tired and there’s wasn’t enough to keep us and our son entertained.

The living room had been brought up to date wonderfully with its woodland themed mural and tastefully re-vamped sofas. The bathrooms had been given an impressive update, with sleek, modern fittings but it was the bedrooms that impressed me the most – very boudoir-esque.

As we were on the database, we’d regularly receive newsletters updating us on the latest news and were intrigued to learn that Center Parcs had been taken over and given a bit of a revamp. We thought we’d give it another go.

“The living room had been brought up to date wonderfully with its woodland themed mural.”

Our son was now too old for the kids’ clubs, but there was certainly enough to keep us all entertained with the newly refurbished bowling area, woodland walks and more than enough sporting activities than we could cram into our short stay.

BACK TO LIFE I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Aqua Sana Spa and I even went so far as to treat myself to a very relaxing massage complete with soothing essential oils. If their aim was to pamper and make me feel a million dollars, then they certainly succeeded.

Even though we had the family grocery pack, (which was enough food and drink to last a fortnight!), my idea of a break doesn’t consist of much cooking, so we patronised just a few of the eleven fantastic eateries and bars available at the parc.

Wales doesn’t always get it right as far as customer care in the tourism industry is concerned (I expect I’ll be in for some flack after saying this) but we’ve always had excellent service when we’ve visited Center Parcs and this time was no exception.

Whether you choose to visit Center Parcs for a magical Christmas break (and I can thoroughly recommend this) or plan to book for sometime next year, I’d be amazed if you didn’t enjoy it.

ABERDARE

Aberdare is a busy shopping town which combines an eventful history with a grand scenic setting that is home to a wide range of extraordinary shops that offer visitors a unique opportunity to find something a bit different.

From bespoke jewellery to festive homemade cakes there is even a chance to take part in special cupcake workshops! For your Christmas parties, Aberdare has got your one-of-a-kind outfit waiting to be picked out, courtesy of the many fashion boutiques, plus all your beauty needs catered for, thanks to the wealth of hair and beauty salons. There is even a party shop which will add that festive fun to your work’s night out! If that’s not enough to help you find that perfect present, the Indoor Market offers a wealth of stalls, selling a wide range of unusual and home grown items. Aberdare Town Centre is currently undergoing massive regeneration, which will further improve the shopping experience thanks to a £7.7m investment, which includes monies from the Welsh Government through

the European Regional Development Fund, Heads of the Valleys Programme and Targeted Match Funding. The remainder of the funding is provided by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the private sector. This £7.7m project also includes town centre commercial property improvements, under the Aberdare Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Townscape Enhancement Programme (TEP). These offer financial support to businesses and commercial property owners to make external and internal building improvements to enhance the quality of the premises and bring disused space back into use. CYNON VALLEY MUSEUM & GALLERY

Even with all the regeneration works currently going on, it’s business as usual for shops, traders and visitors alike and with FREE parking in the town from 19th December to 24th December - a shopping trip to Aberdare this festive season should definitely be on your Christmas to-do list! LOVE CHRISTMAS LOVE PONTY If you love Christmas, then you’ll love Pontypridd! The popular market town has a sparkling atmosphere as we approach the festive season. With plenty of gift ideas, family fun, entertainment, culture and first-class venues for celebratory dinners or drinks, Ponty really has it all. Traditionally Pontypridd is the market town of the Valleys and with excellent transport links by road, bus and train, shoppers still flock to the area every Wednesday and Saturday to pick up a bargain in the indoor and outdoor market. There are rugs and carpets, shoes and shirts, crockery and curtains, leather goods and fancy goods, knick-knacks and bargains galore! In the indoor market, tables groan with fresh produce; and over the festive period sprouts and cranberries are stacked high, alongside local cheeses, butter fresh from the churn, and bara lawr, a Welsh speciality formed from healthy edible seaweed. Stretching alongside the River Taff for nearly a mile, Taff Street is open for all your Christmas needs and is crammed with greengrocers and bakers, card shops and jewellers, alongside well known names of the British High Street. Pontypridd is benefitting from its largest regeneration cash injection thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council by securing a financial package of £10.5million from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Funding, along with Council and private sector contributions. It is very much business as usual as currently a dramatic transformation of the street scene in and around Taff Street, High Street, Market Street, Church Street and Mill Street is taking place – although all work will cease over Christmas. Many of the commercial traders are also taking advantage of the scheme with grants available to refurbish their properties, and fantastic new and exciting retailers are popping up throughout the town. ❧ 14 ❧

Visits to Pontypridd can be combined easily with sightseeing or walking, cycling on the Taff Trail or a visit to the Museum next to the town’s iconic Old Bridge. You can even catch a fantastic show at the Muni Arts Centre, which will be showing the magical Cinderella this Christmas.

This regeneration comes alongside a whole host of other investments for the town, including the development of the Riverside Shopping Centre, a multi-million pound Sainsbury’s store for the Brown Lenox site and the refurbishment of Pontypridd Railway Station. There’s more to Pontypridd than just shopping. When the bustle of the town centre gets too much, cafés, pubs and hotels beckon.

So why not plan a full family day of fun in Pontypridd? It’s a complete experience for resident or visitor alike.

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, the jewel in the Pontypridd crown, links the shopping centre by an elegant footbridge over the River Taff, with tree-lined walks, gardens and majestic views of the surrounding hills. On December 3rd a special Christmas event will take place in the park with an artificial ski slope, a miniature farm with farmyard animals, where pygmy goats and lambs will put a smile on childrens’ faces and also a Christmas market for the mums and dads.

For further information on the regeneration of Pontypridd: Telephone 01443 495155, Email pontypridd@rctcbc.gov.uk www.loveponty.com

This time of year also marks the traditional turning on of the Christmas lights. A Christmas tree is erected in the town centre with plenty of activities to welcome the special season. On the week before Christmas, parking is free in Council-run car parks in the town.

Mountain Ash, situated in the heart of the Cynon Valley, is a town for all occasions but every New Year’s Eve it hosts the world-famous Nos Galan Road Race, a 5km run to celebrate the life of legendary Welsh runner Guto Nyth Brân.

NOS GALAN The main race starts with a church service at Llanwynno, and then a wreath is laid on the grave of Guto Nyth Brân in Llanwynno graveyard. After lighting a torch, it is carried to the nearby town of Mountain Ash, where the race takes place. Recently named, alongside the London, Boston, New York City and Beijing Marathons, as one of the world’s Ultimate Running Races, Nos Galan attracts people in their thousands. From professional runners who tour the world to families looking for New Year’s Eve fun, Nos Galan provides something for everyone.

T H E M Y S T E RY R U N N E R

The race is started by a mystery runner, usually a running or sporting celebrity. The mystery runner lays the wreath.

It is far more than a race, offering an evening of fun that allows you to welcome the New Year in style, while also celebrating the wonderful and fascinating past of this part of the world.

The evening begins with a traditional church service in Llanwonno, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Guto Nyth Bran in the churchyard. The famed Nos Galan torch is then lit and carried into the town centre, where the races for all ages and all abilities begin. The traditional buzz of New Year’s Eve, with celebrations, fireworks and the anticipation of a new year, creates a wonderful atmosphere, which is further boosted by the attractions, games and activities organised. If you can’t wait until New Year’s Eve to find out what Mountain Ash has to offer, don’t forget the town is hosting a Christmas extravaganza from 3pm on Thursday, December 6 with Santa’s Grotto, local choirs, a festive funfair, street entertainers and late-night shopping so you can enjoy the array of gifts and goodies on offer. The Running Man... Guto Nyth Brân’s legend

“Legend has it Guto Nyth Brân could outrun a hare, catch a bird in flight, keep up with hounds and win races against horses.”

Born Griffith Morgan in 1700, he adopted the name of the farm where he lived, Nyth Bran Farm, on the outskirts of Llanwonno. But the extraordinary, even bizarre, circumstances surrounding his premature death at the age of 37 have probably overshadowed many of his achievements. Guto’s abilities were noticeable from an early age as he enjoyed the vast expanse of the surrounding countryside as his training ground. He was a natural athlete and one of the most gifted runners in Welsh history. Legend has it Guto Nyth Bran could outrun a hare, catch a bird in flight, keep up with hounds and win races against horses. According to one tale, his mother sent him out to get some tea and he ran seven miles down to Pontypridd and back before the kettle had boiled. Guto’s father did not need a sheepdog as the youngster would chase the sheep into the pens for him. His racing affairs were managed by his sweetheart Sian o’r Siop (Sian of the Shop) but his life was tragically cut short when in 1737 he accepted the challenge of a 12-mile race from Newport to Caerphilly. Sian wagered £1,000 of her life savings on her hero winning the race and a triumphant Guto went on to beat his opponent, a younger man known as Prince, an English soldier who was stationed at the barracks in Monmouth. Guto crossed the line in an amazing time of 53 minutes – but when his girlfriend stepped forward to congratulate him, her enthusiasm was more than he could take. She slapped him heartily on the back and he collapsed and died on the spot. Guto was laid to rest at St Gwynno’s Church, Llanwonno, where his grave still attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Nos Galan Races are held in his honour each New Year’s Eve, with the famous Nos Galan Mystery Runner laying a wreath on the grave of Guto. ❧ 17 ❧

After their engagement most couples spend considerable time planning the perfect wedding. Not so for Jill James and Ewart Needham of Southerndown. They gave themselves ten weeks! Vale Life spoke to the happy couple about the preparations for their big day and the event itself.

PERFECT DAY How long did you plan the wedding? Ten weeks! I do love a challenge. I thought what better way to celebrate Ewarts 70th than by getting married, one big celebration all rolled into one. It was certainly a lesson on how to spend a fortune in a short space of time, but what fun! The Venue Well it always helps I suppose to have your own venue! I could not think of a better place to have a wedding than West Farm - the views and sunsets are stunning. I wanted to return to Wales and, as soon as I saw West Farm in 2003, I was hooked I just had to buy it. It has taken me seven years to totally renovate the property, a much bigger project than I anticipated, but well worth it. We are inundated with requests for weddings and we now have a wedding licence, but I wanted us to be the first.

Jill and Ewart’s wedding suppliers Why did you chose Clive Ranger? I just loved their selection of rings. I told them what I was looking for and when I went in a tray arrived with exactly what I had requested, but also a brand new selection of Canadian Diamonds which blew me away. Not only did I have a wedding ring but chose an engagement ring at the same time. The Dress I had a vision of doing the style of Scarlet O’Hara from Gone With The Wind in a rich burgundy and that is what I set out to find. A lot of places thought I was mad, a dress in seven weeks, never, you need six months! However I went into High Society just to look although they had no burgundy. The first dress I tried on was what I bought, but in fact I actually had two pieces as I bought the lace coat as well. High Society could not have been more helpful. They rang Alan Hannah, the designer, to see if they could make the dress in such a short time, which they agreed to, and Arwen got their lady Rhiannon to sort out the beautiful lace coat. I felt like a million dollars on the day and I cannot recommend everyone at High Society enough.

We’ve gathered together some of the very best wedding suppliers in South Wales in this supplement to help make your choice that much easier.

WIN!

The lead up to the day. We had over 200 guests on the day and as our function room wasn’t completed at that point, Alpine Marquees supplied the wonderful marquee. Happy all was in place, I sent the men off to the hotel the night before to enjoy themselves and Ewart could celebrate his birthday.

Tell us about the proposal. Which One? Ewart first proposed in January 1989 and he has been asking yearly ever since! So when he asked on St. David’s day this year he nearly fell of the chair when I said yes. I just knew it was now or never, the time was right.

After an incredibly romantic proposal, where else could Jenny Walton and Ian Huckstep get married but the equally romantic Fonmon Castle? Jenny tells us about their perfect wedding day.

FAIRYTALE WEDDING How did Ian propose and where? Ian and I went up to the Lake District in the Spring of 2009 and spent a few magical days tramping round lakes and up and down fells. On 1 March (St David’s Day just a coincidence!) we went for a big walk from Borrowdale Valley towards Great Gable and Scafell Pike. The mist was quite low on the fells and, when we reached the pointof-no-return ‘crossroads’ and stopped for lunch (in a small hail storm!), I suggested it would be mad to attempt any of the big peaks. What was the point? We wouldn’t be able to see anything when we got there anyway. Ian seemed pretty disappointed but I just put it down to his throw-caution-tothe-wind sense of adventure, because there was no way I was going to attempt a potentially lethal mountain with only three hours of daylight left!

So, we took a lower loop round, up to the snow line and, after a mini-snowball fight, stopped for rest before heading back down the valley. I was sitting there waxing lyrical about how some coffee and a little bit of chocolate can make all the difference, all the while thinking, “If you’re going to do it, this would be the perfect moment.”

Then Ian said, “Shall we head down then?” (“Drat,” I thought. “I’m just going to have a stroppy stomp all the way down the valley, and be mildly annoyed all evening, and I won’t be able to say it’s because you didn’t propose to me on the most perfect opportunity there has ever been!”)

Ian continued, “But before we do...” and then he got down on one knee, produced this tiny little leather box, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Once I’d managed to pull myself together I of course said a resounding “Yes!” Why did you choose Fonmon Castle? For a number of reasons. Annie, the wedding planner, was so welcoming (and was no end of help and support, all seemingly effortless!). The house and grounds are so beautiful. The Library, where the wedding ceremony and later the wedding breakfast, was held, has a lovely intimate atmosphere. But, most importantly, it felt like a home, rather than a corporate conveyor belt. We were allowed to put all our own touches to it – family antique tablecloths for the reception tables, croquet on the lawn etc.

Did you look at other venues? Yes, we did quite a lot of research online and then visited a shortlist. How was the day? It was wonderful. The weather was glorious. It was a perfect Spring day, as I’d hoped, and was sunny and warm enough to have the reception on the lawn - it only just started to rain as we got into the car at the end of the night. The food was fantastic, and the ceilidh was great fun with everyone joining in. At one point in the evening, I looked up and people were sitting all the way up the stairs watching the dancing in the hall - it was just like a grand house party, a real family wedding. Where did you honeymoon? A “Grand Tour” of Italy – from Venice to Florence to Amalfi to Rome, then Sardinia for a week and then a week at home.

Chantele, a journalist, and Jonathan, a bar manager, both 24 from Neath, are childhood sweethearts who married on 8th May 2010 after being together for five years. They had a black and white wedding with an art deco theme. To save money and add a personal touch, they decided to DIY as much of the wedding as they could. Here’s their story.

I DO (IT YOURSELF) The Proposal Having known each other through comprehensive school at Dwr-Y-Felin, Chantele and Jonathan finally started dating when they were 17 and studying at Neath Port Talbot College. “I think we knew we were meant to be together very early on in our relationship, so getting engaged after only ten months together wasn’t a big surprise,” says Chantele. Jon proposed whilst the pair were in Kentucky, USA, for a family wedding. “It happened in the National Park in Florence, Cincinnati, in the snow, in front of a giant stone turtle!” laughs Chantele. “It was a surprise when it happened, even though I knew Jon intended to propose whilst we were in America as we had both discussed it with my parents before we left.” The couple used Chantele’s grandmother’s engagement ring, as Chantele had inherited it and had always wanted it to be her own engagement ring one day.

“I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that.”

The Planning “We both wanted to wait until we had finished university before planning our wedding,” says Jon. “If I’m honest, I didn’t really plan much of our wedding, Chantele and her mum Julie organised 99% of it themselves with my occasional nod of approval.” Chantele, like most women, knew what she wanted her wedding day to be like. “I’m a little different, so my wedding day had to be a little bit different too, and I was very specific with what I wanted. Once mum and I started planning, we realised we could make a lot of things ourselves, and that way I could get exactly what I wanted while adding my own personal touch.”

I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that. Luckily mum and I are both quite creative so we were able to make all the stationery, table centres and the bridesmaids’ jewellery and hair pieces using materials bought on eBay. I also designed all the dresses with the help of Julie Mayers, and mum and I designed the wedding cake which was made by Janet Saith.” Jon says the hardest thing to choose was the photographer. “We must have looked through 200 websites of local photographers before we finally made the decision to book Mark Button, and we are so glad that we did because the photos turned out really well. Just what we wanted.”

The Wedding They both say the day went perfectly. “Not one hitch really,” said Chantele. “I was told I was the calmest bride the photographer or vicar had ever seen. But I am generally a very laid-back person. Jon was a little nervous during the ceremony and before his speech but that was more to do with having to talk in front of everyone.”

Mid-day entertainment was provided by singer songwriter Rob Cross, while the evening guests were entertained by The Mojo’s soul and blues band. “We decided upon Tom Jones’ ‘We Got Love’ as our first dance,” explains Chantele. “The song didn’t have any significant meaning itself but I love his music and Jon likes a bit of Tom too, and we finally picked this song as the lyrics were perfect. It was a totally perfect day. Everyone we loved was there and it was exactly how I dreamed it would be.” The Honeymoon “We don’t really like the heat too much, or beaches, or clubbing, so that cancelled out a lot of places, and we really wanted to go somewhere different,” says Jon. “We wanted to experience a totally new culture and go somewhere you aren’t likely to go on a normal holiday so I suggested China,” says Chantele. “Luckily Jon agreed and we started looking for the best deal.” They eventually booked a tour with Wendy Wu Tours, www.wendywutours.co.uk and spent a month travelling central and northern China. “We waited until November to go away, as the weather would be cooler and it was out of peak season so we would avoid any crowds and queues,” says Jon. “Although we were on a group tour, we still got to spend plenty of time alone, and we had the most amazing trip. It has given us a bit of the travel bug and we already have a list of places in mind.”

A HIRE LOVE

Although you won’t find a vast selection of colour bells and whistles, what you will find is new stock and classical morningwear (in 100% wool).

Hawkes Essentials will also tailor everything to fit, making sure that your outfit looks great on your wedding day. “The reason we have taken on this new avenue of service is because a friend of mine got married last year. He went to three major wedding hire businesses in Cardiff, none of which could help him at short notice, so he came to me and said ‘Russ, you have to start hiring wedding suits,’” said Russell Scott-Lawson, owner of Hawkes Essentials.

“The rest is history. We don’t want to do anything other than the classic outfit of tailcoat, grey waistcoat and striped trouser. After all, that’s what Hugh Grant wore in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral!”

When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories. Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance. What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift. LIGHT AS A FEATHER Pauline Quirke, star of Emmerdale and the 90s hit show Birds of a Feather, has lost weight on LighterLife after being told by her doctor one of her hips had worn away due to her weight. Pauline has battled with her weight for several years and after the doctor said she needed a hip replacement in 2009 she decided it was time to lose weight and keep it off. She had previously lost weight two years ago but when she came off the diet the weight went back on again. Pauline says her weight gain has been gradual over 51 years, “There hasn’t been a year when I’ve binged, my weight just slowly crept up. I’ve never really thought of myself as the fat girl and my weight has never affected my career but I knew it was time to change.” The well known actress is feeling and looking fantastic and has been splashed over national newspapers and magazines recently showing off her new slim figure. She has featured in the Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Best, Woman, Good Housekeeping and Take it Easy. Local Weight-Management Counsellor Mike Hawkins in Barry is excited about Pauline’s weight loss and said, “It’s great to have Pauline on board as an ambassador for LighterLife. She has lost such a substantial amount of weight and is telling everyone how good she feels. LighterLife is a great way of losing weight and keeping it off, and if you have one or more stone to lose there is a programme to suit you. The Foodpacks are nutritionally balanced and have 100% of the recommended daily allowance for key vitamins and minerals.” Emma Barraclough

Claire Lamputt, LighterLife WeightManagement Counsellor in Bridgend, has a client who has halved her weight called Emma Barraclough who says, “Pauline has been a great inspiration to me while on LighterLife, she looks absolutely fantastic! I’ve seen her in magazines and also on This Morning talking about how great she feels - I feel exactly the same. Since losing weight with LighterLife my life has completely changed for the better. My reason and motivation for wanting to lose weight was simple – my son. I came to realise after having him that I could not continue being the way I was. If I did I would not have lived to see my son grow up. I was eating myself in to an early grave! Since losing my weight I have completed my university course and have decided on a totally new and different career path. I would not have made this decision without the balance that LighterLife has helped to give me and my life. I am now more active and can actually catch up with my son. I have had people not recognising me since the weight loss, including family members. I feel fantastic and that’s all thanks to the support of my group and my Counsellor, Claire.” If you have one stone or more to lose why not contact Claire Lamputt (Bridgend) on 01656 720717 or Mike Hawkins (Barry) on 01446 738846 or visit www.lighterlife.com Emma with her son

Sometimes I don’t want to share. Sometimes, I want to keep a special place to myself. However with the festive season approaching I’ll get into the Christmas spirit.

LLANTRISANT IT’S MAGICAL! The reason I’m reluctant to share one of my favourite places is because, inevitably, if I tell people about it, they’ll go there

There are some great places to eat here too. A restaurant that serves up exotic meats on its menu and a good selection of real ale pubs but my most favourite place to chill is The Butchers Arms Gallery & Coffee Shop. Downstairs The Butchers is a treasure trove of gifts, books, stylish ceramic ware and beautiful Stirling Silver jewellery.

The dairy is full of bling and costume jewellery for all occasions - tiaras for proms and weddings, jewellery for a night out, fabulous gifts and scarves. Upstairs is girl heaven in pink with fairy dresses and accessories - wings, wands and shoes! No self-respecting girl or woman should be without a crystal bracelet or ring and there are plenty here to choose from to suit all budgets - a great pick me up! Christmas will be a very bling occasion this year with the trend for sparkle still around - vintage chic with a big bling brooch!

“Don’t be so mean!” I hear you say. “You should let people know. It’s your job!” Well, I can’t unless it’s through gritted teeth. I could tell you that Llantrisant is relaxingly quiet and quaint. I could tell you about the great selection of boutiques - beautiful shops like The Dairy with its beautiful Swarovski Crystal covered evening bags and jewellery to match. Or the striking Pink Zebra - packed to the rafters with the girliest gifts you can imagine. I could wax lyrical about Model House with its gallery and superb shop full of gorgeous artisan jewellery, ceramics, prints, cards and gifts and if I did that, I’d have to mention the Traditional Toys shop across the cobbled square (yes cobbled!) with its huge range of traditional wooden toys.

The Dairy

To complete your party outfit, The Dairy have beautiful evenings bags covered in Swarovski crystal and a fabulous range of evening jewellery to match.

I love the quality, and the care that owners Gill and Noel bestow on everything they sell. Upstairs, The Butchers has derailed many a diet (including a few of mine). With sensational sandwiches, great coffee and a mouth-watering array of homemade cakes it holds a special affection in the hearts of the Valleys’ professional ladies who lunch. And if Llantrisant plays its trump card, history, then it beats most other towns and villages in Wales hands down (it even has its own castle!). I could tell you that cremation was invented here by the charismatic Dr William Price – you’ll see his statue in the town square. I could tell everyone that Christmas in Llantrisant is traditional, charming and, above all, magical, but I’d rather keep it to myself. Call me mean! Bah, humbug.

All ages and tastes are catered for from the very young to the young at heart as there are some collectable items there too. Papo figures are a popular range at the moment with lots of choice in figures from knights to dragons - a ten year old boys dream, according to the grandson of the owner who actually does the ordering with his grandad! When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s crafstmanship and service may be the right choice for you.

ONLY BESPOKE Valleys Life spoke to owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s service so special.

Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design.

“I was head hunted by David Linley Furniture.” The owner, of course, is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people. The furniture manufactured was fine inlay work and precise cabinet making! ❧ 40 ❧

Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes.

“I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products.”

WILL DO Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. Who inspires you? My wife – she is my driving passion and supports me the most. What was your proudest moment? After the birth of my two beautiful children, Oliver and Lucy, it was making furniture for David Linley as the level of workmanship that had to be achieved was absolute perfection.

How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What do you do when you’re not creating beautiful furniture? We enjoy eating out and if we’re shopping on a Saturday afternoon in Cowbridge we’ll often pop into Bar 44 to relax with a refreshing drink and tapas food. I like to keep fit and enjoy running, swimming and cycling. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients.

OVER THE MOON With six practices under their belt, it’s no wonder that Davies and Jones Opticians has a growing clientele. Valleys Life talks to Simon Moon and his family about why they choose to visit this particular opticians.

Please tell us more about you and your family. My name is Simon Moon. I’m 52 years old, my wife is Nicola, aged 53 and we have a daughter Harriet Moon, who is 16. We live in Penycoedcae, Pontypridd. Which practice suits your needs? The one in Talbot Green as it’s the one that’s most local to us. How long have you been customers of Davies and Jones Optometrists? Approximately six years. Why did you choose them as your family opticians? We did look at other opticians but felt that Davies and Jones had a much wider choice of frames than other local opticians. My wife Nicola and I like to keep up with the trends but it is especially important for our daughter Harriet to have a good choice of designer frames. We also wear contact lenses on a regular basis and they’ve been very good with those too. Who do you see there? Mel helps us with our glasses. She is very knowledgeable – especially about frames and helps us choose the ones which suit our face shapes. It’s important to have that relationship and we trust Mel’s advice and value her opinion greatly. Are you happy with the treatment you receive? Yes, we’re more than happy. The staff in Talbot Green are always very helpful and accommodating. We would be happy to recommend them to family, friends and colleagues.

“Our main focus at Davies and Jones is always on giving our clients a professional and thorough service. The staff at our six practices work hard to provide the sort of care and attention that they would expect to be given themselves. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve earned the coveted Investor in People award. I have been very pleased to have worked with the Moon family on meeting their requirements. All of our staff in each practice live locally which helps us get to know our clients well so that they feel completely comfortable with us. Once a member of a family becomes a patient, we often see other family members who then remain with us for many years.”

BEAUTY ADVANCE Excessive or unwanted hair can be an embarrassing problem. If you have unwanted hair and you’ve thought about laser hair removal, but don’t know who to trust, then Daniela Evans of Beauty Advance Laser Clinic of Whitchurch can answer some of the questions you may have about laser hair removal. How does laser hair removal work? Highly controlled flashes of light energy are selectively absorbed by hair-filled follicles. The melanin absorbs the light, heats the hair shaft destroying hair regrowth but not the surrounding skin. How many treatments will I need? The growth cycle will be influenced by age, hormones and gender. We recommend a minimum of 3, on average 5-6 treatments. Can all hair colours be treated? Lasers and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work best on dark hair because the pigment melanin absorbs the laser light. Fair hair can respond well, but white hair, grey hair, very blond hair and some types of red hair respond poorly to lasers and IPL’s unless stained using a special melanin encapsulating solution. Can all parts of the body be treated? Using the latest laser technology we are able to treat all areas of the body quickly, safely and effectively. Is the treatment permanent? No single laser system destroys all hair follicles. Some follicles are destroyed, others are miniaturized and some enter a prolonged resting phase. It is possible that with a sufficient number of treatments, true permanent hair removal can be achieved. Is the treatment painful? No. However, there is a slight discomfort usually described by patients as a warm tingling sensation. No local anaesthetic is required as the treatment is tolerable. The treatments are so effective that patients can return immediately to work or their daily routine and hence there is no lost time.

Are there any after effects? Redness, and some discomfort of the area (like sunburn) may be present for the first few days following treatment. Blistering may occur in a small minority of patients, and this settles without treatment in a few days. How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis hair removal? Laser hair removal is much faster. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it's a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser hair removal treats many hairs per every laser pulse. Laser hair removal for an area like the underarms for example can be treated in only 20 minutes. Is it safe? We are registered by the Health Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) which ensures that we adhere to protocol at all times for your peace of mind. What’s the minimum age for laser hair removal? There really is no age limit, but we never treat toddlers. Young people that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch ups to maintain the results. We currently do not treat children under the age of thirteen. What’s the best advice you could give for someone considering this or any other beauty treatment? Always pop in for a free of charge consultation to find out more about the clinic, and the practitioner treating you. After all, people buy from people and there needs to be a trust and confidence built between the client and practitioner. The best practitioner will be honest about what can be achieved. Ask to see client testimonials.

“After years of electrolysis, Beauty Advance has been a revelation. I wish I had known about it years ago!” ❧ 48 ❧

THE LAST WORD Rob Hodge loves nothing more than being a doting grandfather. His day job however is a fully qualified, award-winning gardener with over thirty years’ experience. Valleys Life digs a little deeper... Tell us a little about your background Rob? I spent nineteen years as Head Gardener at Tredegar House, a 17th Century Mansion in Newport. During this period I was involved in the restoration of all the major gardens across this 90 acre estate, and saw the work nationally recognised in 1998 by winning the award for the Best Kept Parks and Gardens in Britain. Following this, I spent five years assessing and training NVQ students, which led to me starting my own business in 2003. I specialise in soft landscaping - creating and maintaining gardens with plants in mind. Are you a member of any gardening clubs or societies? Yes, I’m a member of the Royal Horticultural Society. What do your services include? Period garden restoration and maintenance, garden improvements, design and planting including cottage and herb gardens, lawn management, fruit tree training and pruning, planting water features, supplying ready planted baskets and containers and NVQ training and assessing. My passion is for country gardens that need that special attention to bring them back to where they should be.

“My passion is for country gardens that need that special attention to bring them back to where they should be.” What areas do you cover? Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend, South Wales Valleys, Vale of Glamorgan, Cwmbran, Usk Valley, Pontypool, Abergavenny, Chepstow, Caldicot and Bristol. What do you do when you’re not working? Well, I have just become a granddad so the dynamics around our lives have changed somewhat, with a grandson born in the spring and another granddaughter due to arrive any day soon, my spare time is already filled. When I do get the chance, I am a keen Landrover enthusiast and its great to drive out into the countryside with my wife Lyn. I’m also an adult instructor with the army Cadet Force so you could say my spare time is pretty full. ❧ 50 ❧

Sum yourself up in three words. Happy, contented, lucky. In a nutshell, my philosophy is … I wish everybody would apply this to their work ‘know your subject, keep the standards high and never become complacent’. What are your top five gardening jobs this autumn? ■ Plant any remaining bulbs ■ Cut down spent perennials ■ Start manuring vegetable beds and herbaceous borders ■ Plant new hedges ■ Think about protecting tender plants from severe frosts and snow. I suppose I’m doing myself out of work here aren’t I! Perhaps I should be saying ‘you could always give me a call and I’ll give you a quote for doing the work for you.’ Rob Hodge Horticulture 01633 744075 www.robhodgehorticulture.co.uk
