Our cover star! Our cover star is the amazing powerhouse of a businesswoman, Nicky Bright of Nicky Bright Holidays. Read all about her journey on pages 4 to 9.
Not many business success stories begin with a single pound in a purse. But for Nicky Bright, the founder of Nicky Bright Holidays, that’s exactly how it started - not with a business plan, but with a bit of grit-laced magic.
Today, she manages a growing portfolio of unique and irresistible holiday lets across south and west Wales and never seems to stop. “I’m currently in the process of buying a luxury property at the ‘Manor in Talygarn’. Then there’s ‘The Ynys, near Swansea’ – it’s my most recent purchase - I’ve turned it into a party venue with accommodation. It’s fabulous!”
There’s the Coach House, Bridgend, a luxury five-bedroom house and The Old Stables, a quirky cottage in Pembrokeshire. Last and certainly not least, she’s acquired a luxury caravan at Vale Holiday Park, Porthkerry, near Rhoose on the Heritage Coast. “That overlooks the sea - a place I thoroughly enjoy using myself out of all my holiday lets as I feel I can switch off from work, it is so peaceful just looking at the sea with a glass of wine. I can really unwind there.”
But behind every perfectly plumped towel stack and strategically placed candle is a story. And Nicky’s? It’s one of resilience, reinvention, ambition and relentless determination.
A Fall, A Spark, A Start
“I had one pound to my name when I started,” says Nicky. And yet, from that single pound, something extraordinary began to take shape. “I had an idea,” she says. She began hosting foreign exchange students from affluent families seeking an English education.
“I even hosted the daughter of the Moët & Chandon family. It gave me breathing space. Ten years of stability.”
Then, in 2017, a friend suggested something new - Airbnb. It was in its infancy in the UK, and Nicky saw potential where others saw risk. “I’d always had an eye for interiors,” she explains. “A friend asked me to spruce up her caravan at Trecco Bay, and then more people were recommended to me.”
From there, a new business was born almost accidentally - styling, managing, and renting holiday properties on behalf of owners who didn’t want the hassle. “I sourced all the furniture, rolled up my sleeves and did the makeovers, and managed the bookings. Soon, I had nineteen properties back-to-back. It gave me the foundation I needed.”
“Nicky manages a growing portfolio of unique and irresistible holiday lets across south and west Wales.”
Ask Nicky what makes a great holiday let, and she won’t quote a design book or Pinterest or Instagram reel.
“It’s instinct,” she says. “When I walk into a property, I think, ‘What will the guest feel when they walk in? Will they say ‘wow?’ It starts with basics - good parking, a fresh smell, warmth. Then I work from there.
She doesn’t chase trends. “I’m not into themes - no seaside stripes or cactus wallpaper. I go for quality, timelessness. It needs to appeal to everyone, and most importantly, it needs to last.”
Flat-pack furniture, for example, is banned. “It’s false economy. It breaks, it wobbles, and guests notice. I have trusted suppliers - companies who build things properly. Guests can tell when something’s been done right –built with care.”
And clearly, it works. Each of her properties has earned a Superhost status - the gold standard in guest satisfaction. “That matters to me,” she says. “It’s recognition that I’m getting it right.”
The Showstopper: The Coach House Of all her projects, one stands out. The Coach House in Bridgend. “It was neglected. Very tired. But I saw what it could become.”
In just one month, Nicky turned it around. She sourced every item herself, oversaw every contractor, and styled it with her signature warmth-meets-wow formula. “I worked my socks off. But I knew it would work.”
It’s this kind of transformation that gives her a buzz. “You can take something overlooked, give it attention, quality, love - and suddenly, people can’t wait to stay in it.”
And then there’s The Ynys. A former failing pub in Swansea, reborn as a party venue for weddings, hen and stag weekends, and military groups looking for a secluded, secure stay. “I think it’s great value for money,” she says. “A two-night stay from £2,200 for up to 26, to a three-day long weekend for weddings with up to 125 guests plus 26 with accommodation for £4,000!”
“I wanted it to still serve the community, just in a new way,” Nicky adds. “It’s hard to find affordable wedding venues. Here, a group can book three nights for £4,000. They sort the rest themselves - catering, bar, flowers. I can help with my contacts. But it’s their space.”
Still, not everyone was initially on board. “Locals were unsure. It was their old pub, after all. That’s why I’m hosting an open day this summer - to show them how I’m keeping its spirit alive.”
To feed her growing empire, Nicky needed to order even more furniture and needed kudos from her retailers so she opened a shop in Cardiff which enabled her to secure trade deals with high-end furniture suppliers.
“I needed access to quality items at good prices. The shop gave me credibility. Now I order in bulk, store items in my own warehouse, and use them across properties. It’s streamlined everything.”
Trade shows, overseas trips, local finds - everything becomes inspiration. “I never switch off,” she admits. “I’ll be walking through a market in Italy and think, ‘That’s perfect for the Coach House sofa.’ It’s just how my brain works.”
The Weight of Success
But relentless ambition has its price. Nicky suffered a heart attack recently - a clot near her heart after ignoring symptoms for too long. “I was too busy. I didn’t have time for doctor’s appointments, for tests. It caught up with me.”
Now she tries to be more mindful. “I worry about what would happen if I wasn’t here. My family, my sister - they wouldn’t know how to run it. The business would fade. That thought concerns me.”
Yet, she can’t stop. “I love working. I don’t think I’ll ever retire. This is what I do. It’s who I am.”
The Traveller Within Travel remains a huge part of Nicky’s life. She’s a cruise aficionado - Royal Caribbean is a favourite - and her dream destinations include Thailand, Italy and the south of France.
“I love places with beauty and soul,” she says. “The Norwegian fjords moved me. So did Morocco and Alesund in Norway. The minimalism, the wood, the light – it’s tactile, it’s everything I love.”
When she travels with her daughter, Morgan, they seek comfort and luxury. “We work hard. When we go away, we want plush hotels, beautiful food, space to unwind.”
Trips with her best friend Nicola - a fellow businesswoman - are more about indulgence. “We go to Chelsea Harbour Hotel in London. We take the car –never the train, too much luggage! We stay two nights, bring a week’s worth of clothes, shop, chat, laugh.”
Solo travel isn’t really for her. “I admire women who can do it. But I’d rather share experiences. What’s the point of a beautiful dinner if you’re alone at the table?”
Passports, Problems & Perspective
It’s not all Aperol and sunshine. She was once mugged in Portugal, surrounded the moment she stepped off a cruise ship. Another time, she left her passport on a plane to Norway - a travel disaster that led to frantic calls to the British Embassy and costly replacements.
“I’m more cautious now,” she says. “No flashy clothes, no designer bags. And I always keep my passport on me.”
“One thing is certain - Nicky won’t be stopping any time soon.”
What’s Next for Nicky Bright?
She dreams of buying a crumbling castle in the Brecon Beacons, converting it into a boutique estate of flats and a grand house. In reality, she’s considering selling her current portfolio and focusing on one larger plot - a glamping-style retreat where she can centralise her efforts. “No more motorway traffic, just one beautiful place done properly.” But one thing is certain - she won’t be stopping any time soon.
Three Words That Sum Nicky Up? Passionate. Hard-working. Strong. That’s Nicky in a nutshell. From heartbreak to hospitality maven, she’s proof that life’s biggest setbacks can lead to its brightest chapters - as long as you refuse to give up.

Tucked away on Corfu’s verdant northeast coast, just a short hop from the charming harbour town of Kassiopi, lies a retreat that offers something beyond the ordinary Greek villa holiday.
Mimosa House, part of the private Kardaki Estate and expertly curated by CV Villas, manages to combine elegance with ease, offering panoramic sea views, total privacy and a design aesthetic that feels effortlessly stylish. It’s Greece, but not as the travel brochures usually tell it.
A Different Kind of Corfu Corfu is no stranger to British holidaymakers, but its reputation has often been shaped by its more commercial southern resorts. Head north, however, and the island reveals a more authentic, timeless charm. The northeast coastline is all gentle hillsides, ancient olive groves, and far-reaching views across the Ionian Sea to the misty peaks of Albania. It’s a place where the pace slows, the air carries the scent of wild herbs, and the beaches still feel uncrowded.
That’s exactly where you’ll find Mimosa House – a modern yet characterful villa nestled among the silvery leaves of old olive trees, just 4km from Kassiopi and a short distance from the traditional villages of Perithia and Agios Ioannis. Kalamaki’s family-friendly beach, with its shallow waters and beach bars, is just a kilometre away. The setting strikes a perfect balance between seclusion and convenience.
The Villa Mimosa House is a masterclass in understated luxury. The clean lines and contemporary furnishings sit comfortably within their natural surroundings, with whitewashed walls, natural textures and earthy tones drawing inspiration from the local landscape. Our favourite touch? A rustic old wooden door artfully positioned over the fireplace - one of many design details that bring a sense of personality to the interiors. There are other similar accents throughout which has definitely inspired us to change our home decor.
The villa sleeps six comfortably, with two en suite bedrooms flanking the airy open-plan living space, and a third, more private suite at a lower level – ideal for grandparents, a couple, or a teenager seeking their own space. The layout allows guests to come together when they choose, yet enjoy peace and privacy whenever needed.
Each room opens out onto terraces or gardens, all of which seem to melt seamlessly into the view. And what a view - endless blue skies and the gentle shimmer of the sea beyond the infinity pool (in the distance you can see Albania), which curves gracefully and includes built-in seating for those long, languid afternoons in the water.
This is villa living at its most comfortable. Mimosa House is fully air-conditioned – though during our stay, with temperatures averaging a pleasant 28 degrees, we barely needed it thanks to cooling fans and clever design. The villa has WiFi throughout, a Bluetooth speaker, satellite TV, and a well-equipped kitchen complete with Nespresso machine, wine cooler, and water dispenser.
For outdoor living, there’s a gas barbecue and plenty of shaded terraces for al fresco meals. The pool, heated on request, is as much a visual centrepiece as it is a cooling necessity. Pool towels are thoughtfully provided, as are bathroom toiletries, hairdryers in every room, and even a washer/dryer for extended stays.
Families are well catered for too, with a travel cot and highchair included free of charge.
What really sets Mimosa House apart is the feeling of calm that envelops you the moment you arrive. The surrounding gardens are immaculately landscaped and designed for relaxation. Whether you’re sipping coffee as the sun rises or enjoying a chilled glass of local wine in the evening light, every moment feels a little more special in this setting.
We were particularly taken with the concierge service available through CV Villas. For those wanting to truly unwind, a private chef can be arranged to cook up traditional Corfiot cuisine in your own kitchen – a memorable experience that combines Greek flavours with five-star comfort.
And for those travelling during summer 2025, it’s worth noting that a complimentary breakfast hamper is included for bookings between 21st July and 31st August – a thoughtful touch that adds to the sense of being well looked after.
While the villa makes it hard to leave, we did venture out mid-week on a delightful boat trip to Corfu Town, courtesy of Cosmic Cruises (just 27 Euros each). Setting off from nearby Kassiopi, the journey down the island’s east coast offered another perspective on Corfu’s beauty - all cerulean waters, cypress trees and white or honeycoloured villas clinging to the hillsides.
Corfu Town itself is a treasure, its Venetian architecture and cobbled alleys alive with history, boutique shopping and café culture. For those interested in exploring more, the island’s highest peak, Mount Pantokrator, offers hiking and panoramic views, while inland villages like Old Perithia speak to Corfu’s rich and complex past.
Kassiopi by Night
Back at the coast, Kassiopi’s charm is undeniable. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a vibrant, cosmopolitan spot –yet it still retains a sense of tradition. At night, the harbour sparkles under fairy lights, with the clink of glasses and the hum of conversation floating on the sea breeze. There’s a healthy mix of tavernas, cocktail bars and gelato stalls to choose from, and plenty of opportunity for a gentle evening stroll or a late-night drink overlooking the water.
We returned more than once, drawn by the simple magic of the place.
Corfu’s northeast is a place of quiet riches – not flashy or overdeveloped, but full of texture, colour and life. Mimosa House captures that spirit perfectly. It’s a villa for those who appreciate beauty, comfort and a genuine sense of place. Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a romantic escape or simply a break from the world, this corner of the Ionian might just be your perfect hideaway.

From Cowbridge to Canada in under five hours - Suzanne Cumpston discovers the untamed beauty and warm welcome of Newfoundland, a hidden gem that feels a world away but is surprisingly close to home.
Suzanne Cumpston of Sam Smith Travel in Cowbridge recently took a whirlwind four-night break to one of Canada’s most underrated gems – Newfoundland. With breathtaking scenery, an abundance of wildlife, and possibly the best lobster she’s ever eaten, it’s safe to say the trip left a lasting impression. We caught up with Suzanne to hear all about her adventure.
What inspired your trip to Canada?
I’ve been before and absolutely love Canada, so I was keen to discover a new area - and this time it was Newfoundland!
Was it your first time visiting, or have you been before?
I’ve travelled extensively in CanadaThe Rockies, Toronto, Niagara - but Newfoundland was new to me. How long did you stay, and which cities or regions did you visit? It was a short trip - just four nights - but I’ll definitely return for longer. There’s so much more to explore in this incredible province.
Planning & Travel Experience
Was your trip spontaneous or well-researched?
The trip was inspired by WestJet’s new direct route, which took just 5 hours 20 minutes outbound and only 4 hours 20 minutes coming backunbelievably quick! That definitely kickstarted my interest in Newfoundland.
Sam Smith Travel also works with some fantastic Canadian suppliers who were so helpful in recommending must-see areas of this stunning region.
How were the logistics - flights, visas, transport?
The flight was direct, short and very comfortable - a big bonus! The Canadian ESTA was simple to arrange (and we can help with that at Sam Smith Travel). I’d recommend hiring a car for the freedom - driving was easy and enjoyable. That said, if you don’t fancy driving, we can organise preplanned tours or even a cruise.
Any surprises?
Just how fast you can get there!
What stood out most to you – and why?
The Trinity area completely stole my heart. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful, and the ocean views were just magical.
Favourite experiences?
The seafood was unforgettable. I had the freshest lobster I’ve ever eatenfrom pot to kitchen to table all on the same day! The scallops, crab, salmon and cod were also outstanding.
Did you do anything adventurous?
We took a Zodiac boat 20 miles out to sea and saw sperm whales, humpbacks, orcas, dolphins, puffinsyou name it! If you’re lucky, you’ll even see icebergs.
What did you think of Canadian culture and people?
There’s a strong Irish heritage in Newfoundland. St. John’s, the capital, is full of incredible bars, restaurants, nightlife and charm. The colourful houses are delightful - there’s even a street called Jelly Bean Row.
Did you interact with locals? Yes, and they were so warm and friendly. How could they not be, living somewhere so beautiful?
What stood out food-wise?
Have I mentioned the lobster? Honestly, if you’re a seafood lover, you’ll be in heaven. There are also excellent steakhouses, and great options for vegetarians and vegans.
Any memorable customs or quirks?
When driving along the coast, it’s traditional to shout “There she blows!” if you spot a whale - which we often did!
Most unforgettable moment?
My personal highlight was our overnight stay at the Fisher’s Loft Inn in Trinity. Dame Judi Dench stayed there while filming The Shipping News. It was just perfect - a wraparound porch with rocking chairs, beautiful views, food grown on-site, and even binoculars in the room to spot whales. It was quintessential and peaceful in every way.
Any funny travel stories?
We named one of the whales Steve, after our very charismatic tour guide. It stuck!
What did you take away from this trip? That such an amazing destination is so quick and easy to reach! Newfoundland is a real hidden gem.
Would you recommend it?
Absolutely. I felt totally safe, the people were so welcoming, and the natural beauty, food and experiences were second to none. I completely fell in love!

If you’ve ever longed for an excuse to be gloriously unproductive, book yourself a stay at The Quay Hotel & Spa in Deganwy near Conwy. This place is practically purpose-built for doing very little.
“You come here with every intention of exploring North Wales; you stay rooted to your balcony because it’s honestly hard to imagine anywhere else putting on a better show.”
We nabbed a room on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the estuary - a front-row seat to yachts and fishing boats drifting by, gulls wheeling overhead, and the hulking silhouette of Conwy Castle across the water doing its best brooding medieval guardian act.
Mornings started with coffee so good we found ourselves rationing it, just to make the moment last. Afternoons were for aimless balcony loitering. By early evening, it was only right to crack open a bottle of wine and watch the last of the sun paint the water gold. You come here with every intention of exploring North Wales; you stay rooted to your balcony because it’s honestly hard to imagine anywhere else putting on a better show.
The rooms are bright, thoughtfully designed, and quietly indulgent without trying too hard. Ours was modern and calming, with soft coastal tones that let the real star - that view - hold centre stage. A bed that seemed to mould around you. Even the bathroom sink had a great view, plus a shower that hit perfect temperature on demand.
The toiletries were a cut above, so that a quick wash after a day out didn’t feel like scrubbing off memories, more like sealing them in with something lightly scented and luxurious. If you’re going to hole up somewhere, you’d want it to be here.
Food That Delivers (And Then Some) We made our way to the Ebb & Flow restaurant, which thankfully is more interested in taste than fuss. Plates arrived that managed to be unfussy yet still quietly impressive. Local ingredients, deftly handled, nothing overcomplicated. Steak cooked to perfection.
At breakfast the next morning, we lingered. Good coffee again (clearly they’re onto something here), easygoing service, and just enough chatter drifting over from other tables to feel companionable without being intrusive.
The Cove Bar was where we let ourselves get talked into trying Welsh gins - a gentle nudge from the bartender and suddenly you’re half-expert in botanicals you can’t pronounce. The atmosphere was that ideal middle ground: relaxed enough to come in straight from a walk, stylish enough to make you glad you did.
The spa here is clever – nicely laid out with a decent size pool. It doesn’t beat you over the head with how tranquil it is. It just is. You shuffle through Himalayan salt air, let your feet soak while quietly wondering why this isn’t a daily ritual back home, and then sweat out any last stress in the infrared sauna. We honestly loved the infrared sauna.
We treated ourselves to an Oskia massage, which felt more like a small, private rescue mission. Knots you didn’t even know you’d collected were persuaded to give up the ghost. Afterwards, you float out into the world, slightly dazed, skin warm, convinced you’re at least five years younger. Ached a little the following day, but it was a good ache.
All the scenery, spa days and fancy pillows in the world don’t mean a thing if the staff aren’t up to scratch. The team here make the place sing. Katerina and Anna who made breakfast a breeze, Chandler at reception, Ellie’s easy grin every time we crossed paths, and the housekeeping crew who clearly take personal pride in making sure everything’s spot-on.
Even dinner service was more than just plates and cutlery - Antonio and Phil made sure our evening felt like an event, without ever tipping into pretence.
Officially this is a four-star hotel, though we’d happily call it five. It’s ridiculously well-placed: a stone’s throw from Conwy’s winding streets and imposing walls, ten minutes from Llandudno’s bright promenade and bustling high street, and with the mighty shoulders of Snowdonia visible in the distance if your legs itch for a climb.
But honestly? The magic is right there on your balcony, glass in hand, watching the sun slip away behind the castle. Debating whether you can stretch out your stay another night. Promising yourself next time, you’ll venture a bit further. Maybe.
That View
Conwy Castle standing guard across the water, yachts and fishing boats gliding by, sunsets that practically demand applause.
Breakfast Done Right.
Good coffee (seriously good), relaxed pace, and staff who make you feel like a regular by your second morning.
The Spa Reset.
Infrared sauna, Himalayan salt air, Oskia massages - and afterwards, you’ll wonder why you ever tolerated everyday stress.
The Balcony Effect.
Even if you arrive with grand plans to scale Snowdon, you might find yourself perfectly happy on a balcony with a bottle.
People Who Care.
From Katerina and Anna’s warm welcome at breakfast to Chandler slipping you chocolate at receptionit’s the team that makes this place hum.
Conwy Town
Quaint harbour, castle walls you can still stomp around, plus a suspension bridge that was once an engineering marvel.
Llandudno
Pastel hotels, a bright pier, enough shops and cafés to derail your ‘just a stroll’ intentions.
Snowdon
The big one. If you fancy bragging rights, lace up. You can nip over to Bettws-y-Coed to pick up some gear. There are several great shops there and the waterfalls are worth the trip. Otherwise, admire it with a pint from a safe distance.
Portmeirion
Fantasy Italianate village by a Welsh hillside. A bit bonkers, totally brilliant.
Parking
Easy. You won’t need to wrestle for a spot.
WiFi
Solid even in the bar - work or Netflix, your choice.
Afternoon Tea
Because you’re on holiday.
Gift Vouchers
Smart if you need an excuse to come back.
Room Tip
Third floor, estuary view, balcony. Trust us.

Looking for a two-night break not too far away, we decided to make our way across the bridge for a spot of shopping and R&R. It’s amazing what you can squeeze into 48 hours.
We like Cheltenham a lot, and the Montpelier area very much. It’s a lovely part of this gorgeous spa town and has some beautiful shops, boutiques and eateries. Perfect for strolling and window shopping.
We didn’t get away as early as we’d like (work sometimes gets in the way) but were happy to get there in time to have a good few hours in the afternoon before our meal at the hotel later.
We had booked ourselves in at the four star Cheltenham Chase Hotel. Very reasonably priced and its location just outside Cheltenham bordering the beautiful Cotswolds countryside seemed to fit the bill.
“A warm welcome is provided by the attentive yet unobtrusive staff.”
The Montpelier area is particularly classy. There’s a distinct lack of plastic signage, and wooden facias, gold leaf and original signwriting contribute to an ambience that just makes you feel a little better about the world. Yes, it’s a romantic view of retail but it’s also reassuringly authentic – if there’s a benchmark for a beautiful high street, Montpelier is it. Two or three hours flew by, punctuated by a coffee break, until it was time to head for the hotel.
Dinner was pretty good. The restaurant is very stylishly designed, and the staff couldn’t do enough to make us feel relaxed. A warm welcome is provided by the attentive yet unobtrusive staff. The food was good - there’s an extensive menu and the chef here certainly knows how to cook a steak.
Our room was excellent value for money – it even had a bath which is always nice when you’re away. Nothing ends the day better than a hot bath. This one happened to have a large glass of Baileys with ice on the side, which seemed to complement it well!
The next morning, after a lovely shower (it was excellent), we enjoyed a hearty, full breakfast with good coffee and we decided to hit the shops once more (well it would be rude not to wouldn’t it?!).
If ever a hotel stay could be described as a bucket list experience, this is it, and it just so happened that beautiful Sterling silver bucket contained ice and a perfectly chilled bottle of champagne.
Nestled in the heart of the beautiful rolling Oxfordshire countryside, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is more than a luxury hotel –it’s an exquisite celebration of nature, gastronomy, and genuine hospitality. With two Michelin stars, eleven glorious gardens, and food grown mere footsteps from your table, every moment here is a delight to the senses.
The approach to Le Manoir feels like the start of a fairy tale. Tree-lined winding lanes surrounded by lush fields lead you to an oasis of calman enchanting estate, where the golden-stone manor house stands proudly – Union and French Tricolour flags gently waving in the breeze, as if to welcome us personally. As you drive through the gate, it feels special.
The hotel itself is imposing – magnificent even, and then there are the gardens - spread across twenty-seven acres, the grounds are nothing short of breathtaking. You’ll find croquet lawns, fruit orchards, a tranquil Japanese tea garden, and even a mushroom valley and, every so often, an exquisite piece of sculpture or artwork. Creativity and culture are at the heart of the experience.
Most impressive of all is the famous potager – a vast vegetable and herb garden supplying the kitchen with over 70 varieties of fresh, organic produce. You can take a self-guided garden tour or simply wander and soak it all in. Hidden benches, water features, lavender-lined paths – it’s a dream for anyone with a love of nature or an eye for beauty.
“Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is more than a luxury hotel –it’s an exquisite celebration of nature, gastronomy, and genuine hospitality.”
Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the grounds, and we’d echo that advice. There’s something very calming about wandering these gardens, knowing the same courgette flowers or sprigs of thyme might appear on your plate that evening.
We stayed in L’Orangerie, one of the gorgeous garden suites in the courtyard which overlooks the croquet lawn. A peaceful hideaway with limed oak, heated stone floors, and its own private entrance, it felt like our own slice of Provence. It is, in a word, perfect. A bottle of champagne awaited us alongside fresh fruit, handmade chocolates and a beautiful lemon drizzle cake with a hand-written welcome, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable stay.
Le Manoir is also home to The Raymond Blanc Gardening School and The Raymond Blanc Cookery School – both offering practical, inspiring experiences focused on sustainability and provenance. For those with a passion for flavour or foliage, it’s a rare chance to learn from the best in surroundings that are as serene as they are stunning.
Dinner was the real showstopper. The tasting menu, crafted by Chef Patron Raymond Blanc OBE and Executive Head Chef Luke Selby, was extraordinary – creative, seasonal, and deeply satisfying. Every ingredient has a story, many grown just steps away in the estate’s celebrated organic gardens. The service was flawless yet warm –five-star without the formality.
We enjoyed a superb reakfast the next morning – included in our stay – it was a relaxed affair, as delicious as dinner, and served with the same easy elegance that defines the whole experience.

From the very first smile at reception to the last spoonful of dessert, everything about Le Manoir is touched by something magical. Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is not just a hotel. It’s a celebration of craft, nature, and joy. A place to pause, indulge, and take something special away – not just memories, but inspiration. Reassuringly expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Let’s be honest - Holiday Inns don’t usually get the pulse racing. You go in expecting “functional”, “clean”, maybe a vending machine if you’re lucky. On an overnight shopping trip to Bristol, our newlyweds Richard and Nadya were looking for a win.
You get the picture. Let’s face it, no one dreams about staying at a Holiday Inn. So, when Nadya and I rocked up to the Holiday Inn in Filton, Bristol, after a quick detour to Cribbs Causeway for some retail damage, I wasn’t expecting much.
From the outside, it looked like every other big-brand hotel - polite concrete, slightly anonymous. But then you step inside, and bam - someone’s clearly been spending money. Recent renovations have worked wonders. The vibe is fresh, modern, and actually quite nice.
“There was even a handwritten welcome card, a box of chocolates, and some complimentary snacks and drinks waiting for us.”
Cool room, warm welcome
Our standard double room ticked all the boxes: clean, spacious, and mercifully air-conditioned (it was one of those deceptively close British evenings). There was even a handwritten welcome card, a box of chocolates, and some complimentary snacks and drinks waiting for us. We’d recently got married and they were aware of this from the booking conversation. They were nice touches. No overpriced minibar nastiness - just decent stuff, on the house. A classy touch.
Straight in the pool
With the bags unceremoniously dumped, we headed straight to the pool. The hotel’s got a sauna and gym too, but let’s not pretend that was ever going to happen. We floated around, de-stressed, and basically did nothing for an hour. Bliss.
Dinner didn’t disappoint We kicked things off with nachos. Big portion. Plenty of cheese. No regrets. I went classic with fish and chips - crispy batter, thick-cut chips, the works. Nadya tackled a Hunter’s Chicken Burger stacked with bacon, Cheddar, and a sticky bourbon BBQ sauce. We were both happy.
Then came dessert diplomacy. I ordered the vanilla cheesecake with berry compote. She went banoffee pie with salted caramel ice cream. Halfway through, she looked at mine and made the face. You know the one. I caved. Pregnancy is a powerful negotiation tool. We swapped. Best of both worlds.
Drink, music, chill Nadya’s off the booze for obvious reasons, so she stuck with water. I had a single beer - enough to take the edge off without ruining the following morning. The main restaurant was booked out for a function, so we found a cosy booth in the bar. Decent tunes, comfy seats, and just the right level of background noise. It felt more like a laid-back lounge than a hotel bar. No complaints.
Service with actual personality
The staff? Genuinely brilliant. Friendly, chatty, not too in-your-face. Service was quick and easy - no awkward silences between courses, no waving around for attention. Just relaxed, efficient, and human. More hotels should take notes.
Breakfast. Strong. Literally. Morning rolled around and the breakfast buffet delivered the goodssausages, eggs, beans, the full works. Just one minor gripe? The coffee machine had a meltdown and wouldn’t do cappuccinos. So, I made up for it with four espressos. Sorted.
Final words
We left pleasantly surprised. Holiday Inn Bristol Filton might not look like much from the car park, but it’s got style, comfort, and food that hits the spot. Whether you’re flying out of Bristol, heading to the zoo, or just need a solid place to crash, this one’s a bit of a sleeper hit. Would we stay again? Absolutely.
1. The Refurb Factor
Forget what you think you know about Holiday Inns. This one’s had a glow-up. Modern, stylish, and far from bland.
2. Dinner Done Right
Crispy fish and chips, a solid burger, and desserts worth fighting over. Generous portions, no nonsense.
3. Proper Service
Friendly, fast and refreshingly human. No corporate script. Just staff who actually seem to enjoy their job.
Location
Just a short drive from The Mall at Cribbs Causeway – perfect for a precheck-in shop or a stopover near Bristol Airport.
Facilities
Heated pool, sauna, gym, bar, restaurant – and a solid buffet breakfast to fuel your next adventure.
Vibe
Relaxed, modern, and quietly cool. Ideal for couples, business stopovers or a quick night away.

If you’re after a taste of English country glamour, sprinkled with a bit of polo sparkle, ancient Roman flair and plenty of fizz, we might just have found your new favourite getaway.
Tucked away on the edge of the pretty market town of Southam, right in the heart of Warwickshire, sits the brand-new Polo Club Hotel - and after attending its dazzling launch party, we’re already planning our next visit.
We headed over earlier this June to see what all the fuss was about, joining a lively guest list of media folk, local movers and shakers, and more than a few well-heeled Instagrammers, all keen to get the first peek inside what promises to be one of the Midlands’ hottest new destinations.
A proper country welcome (complete with bubbles)
First impressions? Honestly, it’s hard not to be charmed. As soon as you turn into the Stoneythorpe Estate, you’re greeted by eight English flags, sweeping lawns and the kind of views that make you want to exhale a deep city-stress sigh. The hotel itself is effortlessly stylish - elegant but not intimidating, modern yet warm, with just enough traditional nods to remind you you’re deep in the English countryside.
We were barely through the doors before being handed flutes of Bollinger champagne, shimmering with tiny celebratory bubbles. Trays of dainty canapés did the rounds, while a clever line-up of cocktails hinted at the hotel’s ambitions to become quite the place for long lunches and lazy evening tipples.
The dress code might’ve said smart casual, but there was a definite sense of occasion. Guests mingled on the terraces, drifting between laughter and clinking glasses, perfectly happy to let the setting work its magic.
Polo ponies and all the drama
Now, you can’t exactly call yourself the Polo Club Hotel without throwing in a little polo action, can you? The team knew it too. The big draw of the evening was an exhilarating match in front of the hotel. Even if you’ve never watched polo before (we’ve been to a few over the years), there’s something undeniably thrilling about the thundering of hooves, the mallets whipping the air, and the whoops from the crowd when someone scores. It’s great fun and, from what we recall, the after match is always entertaining, if a little blurry (you know what I mean).
We sipped on more fizz, feeling terribly sophisticated, and decided we could definitely get used to the idea of sunny afternoons spent here - maybe with a picnic hamper or two. It’s this seamless link with the polo club that really sets the hotel apart. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the sport or just fancy a bit of peoplewatching with horses thrown in, it’s a brilliant backdrop to a weekend away.
Peeking inside: suites, terraces and a touch of ancient Rome Of course, we weren’t going to pass up a nose around. Throughout the evening, hotel staff ran friendly guided tours, showing off the property’s best bits. Top of the list? The Empress Suite, a decadent sanctuary with a nod to French Renaissance where you can practically feel your shoulders drop the minute you walk in. Plush sofas, gorgeous linens, and a view from the corner terrace that stretches out across the polo fields - it’s the sort of room that makes you want to cancel all plans and stay in with room service.
Then there are the balcony rooms, each with private terraces practically made for morning coffees or late-night glasses of wine. We could already picture ourselves wrapped in fluffy robes, gazing out over the fields as the sun sets.
But the real showstopper? Caesar’s Lounge which doubles as a bar and breakfast room. It’s an utterly captivating space, cleverly blending the relaxed atmosphere of a country retreat with an unexpected splash of grandeur. Large Roman statues stand proudly around the room, giving it a theatrical flourish – they punctuate the space quite cleverly and they’re certainly talking points. Paired with plush bar stools, gleaming backlit bottles and expert mixologists, it’s the kind of spot that effortlessly tempts you to stay for “just one more” cocktail, and we certainly did.
“The Empress Suite, a decadent sanctuary with a nod to French Renaissance where you can practically feel your shoulders drop the minute you walk in.”
If the hotel itself made a statement, the staff sealed the deal. From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much trouble. In particular, Daisy on Reception deserves a special mention - warm, welcoming and effortlessly professional (we loved her Union Jack socks – part of the uniform apparently, and we definitely approve), she set the tone for the entire evening. Later, as the party moved through different spaces, Marta and her colleagues worked the room with such grace and confidence delivery tray upon tray of delicious canapes, ensuring glasses stayed topped up and guests felt genuinely looked after. It’s that combination of slick service with down-to-earth friendliness that makes a place truly memorable.
A party to remember
As the sun set, the celebrations moved back indoors, where the hotel really pulled out all the stops. Live music drifted through the evening air - a mesmerising saxophonist giving everything a slightly Gatsby-esque feel - while a roving illusionist delighted small crowds with sleightof-hand tricks that left us all secondguessing reality.
Later, there was a charity raffle in support of the NSPCC, raising an impressive £3,750. Among the prizes? A mini break in the Empress Suite, complete with the use of a Bentley for the weekend. (Yes, we entered. No, we didn’t win. But we’re determined there’ll be a next time.)
It’s not just about looking pretty What we loved most was the clear sense that the Polo Club Hotel is serious about becoming part of the local community. In speeches, Devin Grosse, CEO of Focus Hotels, talked about how warmly Southam and Warwickshire had welcomed them, while Robin Tjolle from Visit England highlighted how important it is to have bold, exciting ventures like this boosting tourism and putting the area on the map.
Speaking of maps - if you’re not too familiar with this part of the world, Warwickshire is a bit of a hidden gem. Just a short drive from Stratford-uponAvon (perfect for Shakespeare fans) and within easy reach of Birmingham and even London, it’s wonderfully placed for both weekenders and longer stays. Southam itself is small but full of charm, with proper pubs, friendly locals and that old England vibe that’s hard to beat. While we were there, we visited Royal Leamington Spa; what a find (check out LoveLeamington on Instagram). Plenty of great indie businesses, good restaurants, pretty parks and gorgeous boutiques. We’ll definitely return.
So, who’s it for?
In truth, we can see all sorts of people falling for the Polo Club Hotel’s charms. Couples looking for a romantic weekend (polo lesson together, anyone?), groups of friends wanting somewhere with a dash of country luxe, or families gathering to celebrate something special. With the polo club right next door and the hotel already teasing future events, it’s clear this is more than just a comfy bed for the night - it’s shaping up to be a whole experience.
There’s also talk of bespoke stays, carefully tailored to guests’ whims. Think curated hampers, private tours, special tastings or even exclusive meetand-greets with the polo players. It all feels delightfully personal.
Planning your own visit
So yes, we’ll happily admit we’ve fallen a little bit in love. With its dreamy location, playful nods to polo, dramatic Roman interiors, luxurious rooms and genuinely lovely staff, the Polo Club Hotel is exactly the sort of place that makes you start plotting reasons to come back - birthdays, anniversaries, or frankly just because you deserve a treat.
Whether you’re there for the horses, the history, the chance to sip champagne under the watchful eye of a marble emperor, or simply to escape everyday life for a while, this new addition to the Warwickshire countryside is ticking all the right boxes.

Oxford may be the land of dreaming spires, intellectual duels, and cobblestone corners fit for a TV drama, but a ten-minute drive out of the city centre, on Godstow Road, sits a hotel that makes no claim to be anything other than what it is - a well-oiled machine of comfort, competence, and the occasional unexpected delight.
The Leonardo Hotel, a 240-bedroom four-star hotel isn’t shouting to be noticed. And that’s exactly why it works.
Walking into the lobby, the first thing that hits you isn’t a front desk or a pretentious art piece. It’s the smell - clean, warm, a little spa-like - like someone actually cared about your experience. That scent follows you throughout the building. It’s a quiet signature, and I appreciated it.
We booked an Executive Room. The carpet had seen some action - a few small battle scars, stains, nothing grotesque - but the rest? Immaculate. Spacious, with a rainfall shower that actually worked. And stayed hot. Every time. You’d be amazed how many hotels fail where the bathroom is concerned. The White Company toiletries were a nice touch - British, posh, not trying too hard.
No view, no balcony, and no one pretending otherwise. That’s not what this place is about. This hotel is about being ten minutes from Oxford and fifteen minutes from a number of ohso pretty, chocolate box villages with crooked timber pubs, ducks in the street, and locals who say “hello” like they mean it.
We took a drive to a few slightly further afield - Thame, Stonesfield and Henley but had to stop for a coffee (okay wine!) in a quaint pub in Bray, home of the three Michelin starred The Fat Duck by Heston Blumenthal. The ducks were aplenty there. The Leonardo is perfectly located to explore the region. Clarkson’s Farm is thirty minutes away and The Farmer’s Dog (Jeremy’s much lauded pub) is a mere twenty minutes due west. The roads are, for the most part, in excellent condition.
To help get your bearings Oxford is in the south-east of Oxfordshire and is enviably positioned, surrounded by beautiful countryside and historic properties including Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Oxford city centre is just as packed with historic spots, including the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, and the fascinating Oxford University Museum of Natural History, as well as the adjoining Pitt Rivers Museum, home to an impressive anthropological collection.
Geography lesson done, Cathedral and churches visited, we hit the shops. Just a couple of my faves and just long enough to buy one item (I have a problem!). Then it was back to the hotel for dinner.
Here’s where it got interesting. We’d been to the Marco Pierre White joint upstairs before. Good steak, mood lighting, decent wine list. But this time we hit Leo’s, the first-floor in-house restaurant - no fanfare, no expectations. We ordered like we meant it: sourdough and butter, grilled salmon, surf-and-turf ribeye with fried eggs and Béarnaise, because yes, steak and eggs can be dinner if done right. It was. Not transcendent but perfectly executed.
Savoury done, we needed sweet. The mango and lemon sorrel Eton Mess for dessert? Refreshing. The cheese plate? A welcome punch of Artisan cheeses, sourdough crisps, grapes and chutney. Drinks? Just a vodka tonic and a glass of red - simple, smart, clean. Like the service, which was exceptional. The team ran the room like pros - friendly without fawning, present without hovering. That balance is hard to get right.
The hotel handled the heat wave like a champ. Air con held steady. The beds are by DREAM, apparently - marketing hokum, but it delivered. Best two nights of sleep I’ve had in a hotel bed in a while. The room came with everything you’d expect and a few things you didn’t: free unlimited WiFi, a solid TV, a mini bar with snacks that actually made sense, and a lobby lounge with fruit, biscuits, newspapers, lemon and watermelon-infused water. Hospitality, not hard sell.
Then there’s the gym. Two of them. Not that I used them - vacation, after all. But I did wander into the pool and spa area, fully expecting disappointment. The website doesn’t exactly oversell it, which made the reality more enjoyable. No, you won’t do Olympic laps in that pool, but your kids will have a blast. And the sauna and spa? Surprisingly intense. The kind of dry and wet heat that makes you believe in toxins. I left feeling like I’d shed a layer of the modern world.
Breakfast each morning was a proper affair. Continental, hot buffet, all fresh, all stocked, nothing limp or greasy. It’s the kind of hotel breakfast that makes you want to linger. We could have but didn’t. On our way back we stopped in Cheltenham, our usual haunt. Classy, as always.
Parking’s six pounds a night. Fair. But skip the car drama if you’re heading into the city centre - use the nearby park and ride instead. Efficient, cheap, and lets you dodge the ZEZ (Clean Emission Zone) charges. More money for that second glass of wine.
Bottom line? The Leonardo isn’t luxury. It isn’t boutique. It’s something rarer: a hotel that delivers. Comfort without fuss. Great staff. A solid meal. And the sense that someone, somewhere, actually cares. Would we return? Definitely. Should you book? Yes, it deserves your custom.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Shropshire, The Oak Hut is the kind of place that instantly makes you slow down and smile. Owned and run by the charming young couple Max and Jess, this bijou shepherd’s hut feels like a warm invitation into their peaceful world.
The hut itself is compact yet cleverly designed, with every inch thoughtfully appointed. The décor is tasteful and calming, with a soft colour palette that complements the natural beauty outside. A large, comfortable bed folds away to reveal a cosy seating area, giving you the best of both comfort and space. The kitchen is well-equipped with a twin-hob oven, microwave, toaster, and everything you might need for self-catering. The bathroom, without a power shower, is perfectly serviceable for freshening up after a day’s adventures.
place that immediately makes you exhale and leave the busy world behind.
Small touches make a big difference here. On arrival, we were greeted with a lovely welcome hamperthe kind of gesture that instantly makes you feel cared for. Dressing gowns, slippers, and even hot water bottles are provided, adding a layer of indulgent comfort to your stay. Everything is spotlessly clean, clearly maintained with pride.
Just outside, a wood-fired hot tub awaits - perfect for relaxing under the stars – alongside a firepit for alfresco cooking or simply enjoying the warmth of the flames. There’s also a dedicated games hut stocked with books on wildlife, a darts board, and plenty of space to unwind on cooler evenings.
Max’s art studio is right next door - a wonderful surprise. His oil paintings are truly beautiful, and he takes commissions for those who want to take a piece of Shropshire creativity home with them.
The Oak Hut is ideally located for exploring the area, with Shropshire’s most popular hiking playground, The Longmynd, just a short drive away. Here, you’ll find miles of trails and panoramic views that will take your breath away. Beyond The Longmynd, there are countless other walking routes through rolling hills, wooded valleys, and quaint villages. Shrewsbury is a less than an hour away and the scenic drive is one worth taking.
One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to nearby Church Stretton, only ten minutes away. This picturesque town offers independent shops, welcoming cafés, and a local pub where the whole community seems to gather.
Closer to home is the sweet little market town of Bishops Castle. We enjoyed lively conversation with locals, including John, The Six Bell’s pub’s former owner, and his two friendly dogs - and even caught some live music over the weekend.
Back at The Oak Hut, peace and quiet reign. The views from your doorstep are stunning, the air feels fresher, and the pace of life slows to something altogether more restful. Whether you’re here to hike, paint, read, or simply soak in the hot tub and watch the sunset, this little slice of Shropshire magic will leave you feeling refreshed and reconnected.
With Max and Jess’s warm hospitality, the hut’s thoughtful details, and the natural beauty that surrounds it, The Oak Hut isn’t just somewhere to stayit’s somewhere to cherish.
Nestled within the Leonardo Royal Hotel Oxford, the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill offers a refined yet welcoming dining experience.
From the moment we arrived, the attentive staff set the tonecourteous and present without being intrusive. Their balance of professionalism and warmth made us feel genuinely cared for throughout the evening.
Our meal commenced with a classic prawn cocktail, beautifully presented and generously portioned, setting a high standard for the courses to follow. For mains, we selected the rib-eye and fillet steaks. The rib-eye was rich and flavourful, while the fillet, ordered blue, was cooked to perfection - a rarity that showcases the kitchen’s precision. Accompaniments were thoughtfully prepared, complementing the steaks without overshadowing them.
“The restaurant’s ambience mirrors its culinary ethos: elegant yet unpretentious.”
Desserts continued the culinary excellence. The rice pudding was creamy and comforting, and the Eton mess, adjusted to accommodate a raspberry allergy, was both considerate and delightful. Our drinks - a vodka tonic and a glass of house winewere well-paired, enhancing the meal without overwhelming the palate.
The restaurant’s ambience mirrors its culinary ethos: elegant yet unpretentious. While some might overlook hotel-based dining establishments, this venue defies such assumptions, delivering a standout experience that stands on its own merit. You needn’t be a hotel guest to enjoy a meal here, but after such an experience, you might be tempted to stay.
Just a final shout out to the staff who were just “simply the best” as Chris Eubank used to say. They have a great team here.

We all know that sinking feeling when the holiday ends and the real-world creeps back in. The tan fades, the inbox fills up, and suddenly it’s back to routine, responsibility, and the daily grind. But what if you could carry a little of that holiday calm into everyday life?
“It’s free, flexible, and you can do it just about anywhere. Meditation is a powerful way to reconnect with your inner calm and restore balance.”
Here are a few simple, soothing habits that can help you hold on to that postholiday glow - no passport required.
Meditation
It’s free, flexible, and you can do it just about anywhere. Meditation is a powerful way to reconnect with your inner calm and restore balance. There are countless apps and YouTube videos to guide beginners and seasoned meditators alike - so no excuses! Just a few minutes a day can make a world of difference.
Tai Chi
While most people are familiar with yoga for relaxation, Tai Chi offers another mindful option. Often described as ‘meditation in motion’, it involves gentle, flowing movements that ease muscular tension and quiet the mind. Curious? Look out for local classes or try a beginner’s session online.
Epsom Salt Baths
An easy win. A warm bath with Epsom salts before bed can do wonders for relaxation. The magnesium helps soothe tired muscles and promotes better sleep - perfect after a hectic day.
Dig out that empty notebook and start writing. Putting thoughts on paper is surprisingly therapeutic. It clears the mind, brings clarity, and helps you process emotions. Try writing by hand - it slows the brain and encourages more thoughtful reflection.
Positive affirmations may seem simple, but spoken with intention, they can be deeply grounding. Try: “I am enough,” “I am safe and supported,” “I am doing my best.” Say them aloud. Say them often.
Make time for you
It doesn’t have to be grand. A quiet cup of tea in the garden, a short walk, a favourite comedy show, fresh flowers for the kitchen table, or carving out time for your current book - it’s all valid. The point is to do something just for you, every single day. What lifts your mood?
Remember, small rituals help you stay present, stay centred, and remind you that this moment matters. That post-holiday feeling? It’s closer than you think.

The Polo Club Hotel Official Launch
There are country hotels and then there’s The Polo Club HotelWarwickshire’s newest five-star escape, which officially opened its doors in spectacular style earlier in the summer.
Set against the refined backdrop of the Dallas Burston Polo Club in Southam, the launch party was a true celebration of luxury, elegance, and equestrian charm. A handpicked guest list of media, influencers, and VIPs descended on the property for an evening of celebrationand they weren’t disappointed.
The evening began with a sparkling Bollinger champagne reception, followed by artisan canapés and signature cocktails that perfectly captured the hotel’s refined yet contemporary aesthetic. Guests were welcomed by Devin Grosse, CEO of Focus Hotels, who praised the warm embrace of the local community, while Visit England’s Robin Tjolle added to the buzz with his own remarks on the venue’s tourism potential.
The highlight?
A thrilling live polo match under a summer sky - an unforgettable nod to the hotel’s namesake and the heritage that surrounds it.
Inside, guests were treated to guided tours of the stunning Empress Suite and balcony rooms, each offering panoramic views of the polo fields. A live saxophonist and a roving illusionist added just the right amount of sparkle, while a charity raffle raised over £3,750 for the NSPCC.
