WELCOME With summer disappearing behind us, autumn promises to be full of opportunities for entrepreneurs, start-ups and established businesses. This issue we take a look at sustainability and how being or not being sustainable could affect your business.

On our travels around south Wales this summer, we noticed that Cowbridge had more than its fair share of To Let signs.

Thankfully, by the end of September, many had been let and Cowbridge is buzzing with entrepreneurial spirit again.

We were particularly heartened by great businesses like The Brogue Trader in Morgan Arcade. Owner, Chris Macnamara’s enthusiasm is driving this great brand forward and the family business now has stores in Cardiff, Chester and Bath with at least a further half a dozen on the cards (see page 66).

Publishing our premier ‘Life’ style magazine titles (Vale Life, City Life Cardiff and Wye Life), we meet many businesses, of many shapes and sizes, operating across a wide variety of sectors. The general consensus seems to be that, in south Wales certainly, there is an upward trend. However, more and more companies are being caught out because they’re not marketing themselves effectively.

Websites and SEO (search engine optimisation) is a particular area where business seems to be taking its eye off the ball with far too many relying on pure social media to reach customers. There’s a good piece by Cog Creative’s Corey Hearne on page 58 which highlights some of the issues around SEO and how to make your website work harder for you.

Corey teaches and lectures on web design and development so he knows his stuff.

What does your work as Chairman for Welsh Hearts involve?

It is my job to ensure that the charity is operating correctly, spending any money raised in the best possible way and which meet the criteria set by the laws that govern charities. I also have to make decisions on the future direction of the charity so that we can help as many people as possible here in Wales.

I am really looking forward to my role as Chairman over the next few years and raising awareness of heart disease in Wales and what Welsh Hearts are doing to save lives.

We want to build on this success but also seek new opportunities to make a difference. One area of work which I am particularly excited about is the heart screening trial we are launching in January to detect heart abnormalities in young people aged 14-35.

You will make a difference to your local community and you will have the opportunity to learn new skills. I meet with the trustees bi-monthly to discuss the main issues and priorities. It is also great when trustees are able to support one off fundraising events.

What are your hopes for Welsh Hearts in the future?

Welsh Hearts has already come such a long way in a short space of time. We have created a network and partnerships with key medical professionals to help us further the support we can offer Welsh communities, and we have fundraised thousands of pounds to equip people with the tools and knowledge to help fight heart disease.

Welsh Hearts are looking for more Trustees; do you have a message to inspire people to come on board?

As a board of trustees we need a range of skills from finance, legal, HR, business and communications to support the charity and help us achieve our aims. As a trustee you will help lead Welsh Hearts and decide how it is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives.

The naked truth It was with great anticipation that we undertook the photoshoot for The Queen B, Penarth. Owner Jodie Tanner wanted to show off her new season’s boots but also wanted her ad to have a bit of an impact.

I think we can safely say we achieved that! It wasn’t an easy shoot to pull off.

Let’s face it how many of us ladies are comfortable in posing in just a pair of boots (lovely as they are)? But these brave ladies did an amazing job. Since autumn 2012, Auto Enrolment has been a compulsory obligation for companies to provide a workplace pension for employees (even if there’s just one employee). The scheme is being rolled out across the UK and not being prepared is no excuse and could cost a business dearly.

If you haven’t put a scheme in place or are taking the ‘head in the sand’ approach, beware. To find out more, we talk to pensions guru Andy Parry.

THE PENSION REVOLUTION Does my business have to participate?

Yes. Auto enrolment is now a legal requirement for employers to provide all of its workers with access to a workplace pension scheme and automatically enroll certain workers into a workplace pension scheme, paying contributions on its employee’s behalf. If an employer fails to comply and put the scheme in place by its staging date. It will be deemed as acting unlawfully and will incur fines of up to £500 per day.

What is my staging date?

Your staging is the date set by the Pension Regulator. This is the date, when the scheme needs to be set up by and contributions need to start. Employees would have needed to have been assessed and received any relevant communication. Even if an employer decides to opt for Postponement, employees must have received communication and employees can choose to start on the staging date irrelevant. The Pension Regulator recommends that employers act now in order to manage the process of setting up the workplace pension.

Do the employer duties apply to employees who already have a plan?

Yes, even if an employee has their own individual pension or the employer already has a scheme in place. The employer will have to comply with Auto Enrolment rules. Existing employer schemes will need to be checked with

the provider to ensure that they qualify under the rules for auto enrolment.

However, inevitably there will be added work in continuing with an existing scheme, as there are other tasks that will need to be completed, such as assessing the workforce and communicating to all employees, data management between payroll and the provider, and record keeping. There is also the declaration of compliance that will need to be completed. Employees will have the option of opting out of the scheme. However, they will have to be automatically enrolled again every three years.

Do I have to provide the same pension scheme and contributions to each of my employees?

No. As long as you provide all workers with at least the minimum requirements, you can provide different schemes and benefit structures to different groups of workers if you so wish.

What do I have to do if I appoint you?

Between us and the pension provider we will ensure that all your tasks associated with Auto Enrolment are completed with the exception of uploading your payroll data to the pension provider and paying your contributions.

What happens if it isn’t sorted in time?

The reality is that employers will be in trouble with The Pension Regulator, who will impose penalties and fines. There is an immediate fine of £400 and escalated daily fines of up to £500 per day (yes, per day). There have already been employers who have been fined for noncompliance or late staging. Employers have to remember there are companies who have not started to look at their own situation.

There is also the capacity crunch issue.

It is claimed that between January 2016 and 2018, the number of employers reaching their staging date will go up tenfold, reach an average of more than 100,000 a quarter and then over 200,000 in the first few months of 2017. Which is one of the reasons why the Pension Regulator has written to all employers, providing their staging dates and telling them to act now. There are far more employers staging in a short period of time than there are pension providers and advisers to help the employers with their obligation. This is an unprecedented volume of work for both employers, providers and advisers.

What does an employer need to do in order for you to help them?

They can either telephone our offices or email us and we have a short video on our website that is quite informative.

We can either arrange to meet the employer face to face or, if the employer does not have the time to meet or feels that they want a lower cost option, we can complete their application by telephone and we can send them a pre-populated electronic application, which will save them time and money.

JEEPERS CREEPERS!

Soon to be arriving on a wall or structure near you - the most colourful climbers in nature: the Virginia Creeper and the Boston Ivy.

Parthenocissus Quinquefolia (the name describing its five fingered leaves) and Parthenocissus Tricuspidata (describing its three pointed leaves) are related but climb and cling by different methods.

The Virginia Creeper uses tendrils to wrap around its host and the Boston Ivy uses suction pads to cling to surfaces.

They are both deciduous, losing their leaves in late autumn followed by lush dark green foliage in the spring, which changes to a bright scarlet from September onwards.

They insulate brickwork from the extremes of temperature and moisture that can often cause the cracks in the walls. If your walls are already cracked and damaged then any creeper will find its way in, the same applies to large trees where if the tree is healthy, the climber covers it and provides a wild life habitat and does no damage to the tree but if the tree is diseased or already damaged, then the climber will penetrate, add extra weight to it and could eventually cause it to fall.

Think ahead before you plant. Proper planning prevents poor performance.

You may be surprised to know that not only do they provide colour and character but, contrary to popular belief, these plants positively protect walls by acting as a thermal blanket.

Media Point is Chapter’s popular and versatile upstairs hire room - ideal for conferences, meetings and presentations. Its unique feature is its built-in bar meaning it is perfect for private functions and can be transformed into an intimate social space.

Definitely the colours. Sometimes when we reach a certain age, we can be afraid of colour and of trying something new.

How would you describe Ginger’s?

Ginger’s isn’t quite the boutique you would expect. I like to think it’s more of a mini floor of a department store because it has a bit of everything. From daywear to evening wear and then special event wear, bags and hats - we have it all. Our full wall of jewellery from Dante and Gaby, and Fraas scarves means that we can dress you from head to toe. Our customers tend to be 35 and over and come from near and far.

Customers seem to love your brands.

Ginger’s has been here for seven years and, in that time, I’ve learned to know what my customers want. They want quality first and foremost. They want classic and quirky and affordability.

They like layering different pieces together in an unstructured look and that’s why Sahara, Zele, Capri, Adini, Flax, Ana Nonza, Pomodoro and Intown are my go-to brands.

To fans of Maserati, the resurgence of the iconic Italian brand in recent years is, like the new models, pretty breathtaking. The increasing sales, development and planned expansion of Maserati Cardiff seem to confirm what Maserati already know - the Welsh love Maserati. InBusiness talks to Lyn Evans, Maserati’s General Manager in Cardiff.

How long have you worked at Maserati?

Since April 1st this year, the date that Motorline took over the business.

Have you always worked in the car industry?

I have been in the industry for over 20 years now, mainly prestige - many years with Audi and Lexus, but nothing quite as high end as Maserati.

Please tell us a little about the Maserati marque?

The luxury marque was founded in 1914 in Bologna by Alfieri Maserati and two of his brothers. At first they devoted themselves to the construction of racing cars, then to sports cars and small series grantourers and, subsequently, to those of large series.

Following last year’s 100th anniversary celebrations, Maserati is looking to its future, with the firm promise that the next 100 years will be ‘The Absolute Opposite of Ordinary’. Among other ambitious developments, Maserati is looking to introduce the brand-new Levante SUV in the UK in 2016 and the stunning Alfieri 2+2 coupe in 2017.

What do you think the Maserati brand stands for? What are its core values?

Our recent brand mission statement sums up the company’s aspirations: ‘Build ultra-luxury performance automobiles with timeless Italian style, accommodating bespoke interiors, and effortless, signature sounding power’.

Maserati is, we believe, the Grand Tourer brand. After the introduction of the A6 Pininfarina back in 1947 (affectionately known as the GranTurismo), Maserati has developed cars with the same ethos performance orientated, elegant, practical and luxurious.

What type of person buys a Maserati?

It’s difficult to define as our customer base is quite diverse. It is fair to say that historically, Maserati has generally attracted clients who were business owners or entrepreneurs. With the introduction of Ghibli, we have seen a new generation of clients heralding from the world of corporate business as Directors or Senior Managers. However, attitudinally, they all share similar traits they tend to be cultured, well-educated and happy to stand out from the crowd, appreciating the exclusivity and understated nature of the Maserati brand.

Unfortunately not, but of course working for the brand I do get to drive them often and enjoy being around them almost every day.

Which is your favourite model?

I have to say I love them all but, if I had to choose a favourite, I think it would be the GranTurismo.

What are your plans for the future?

We have a big refurbishment starting at the end of October that will be complete by the end of the year. It’ll be fantastic.

It will give us the platform to keep up the level of service our customers require and help us keep marketing the brand right through Wales.

If you have ever dined in Giovanni’s Restaurant on The Hayes, Cardiff, then you probably know that it is recognised as the longest established independent Italian restaurant in the City. Testament to the reputation and success of The Hayes, in 2013 Giovanni launched its sister restaurant, situated on the affluent Park Place which has gone on to become one of the most Italian popular restaurants in the city centre.

GIOVANNI’S Introducing, Giovanni Malacrino, well-known as a charismatic restaurant owner and entrepreneur in the city, but perhaps less known for his instrumental role in the transformation of Cardiff ’s Café Quarter. Here we talk about his many businesses, The Café Quarter, and the ‘recipes’ to success.

I fast become the no.1 ice cream seller in the city. In 1983 I fell in love with a building on The Hayes, that housed a café called Planters. It was the perfect location as I envisaged that The Hayes would be at the heart of the city centre for years to come and I wanted to open a centrally located restaurant that served authentic, quality Italian food.

Tell us about your businesses you have had over the years.

From a young age business was my passion, and was at the heart of family life. My Parents owned a fish and chip shop in Grangetown called Malacrino’s, where I often worked as a child after school and by the time I was 18 I was running my first VIP nightclub called Fatsos. I then took the plunge and moved to America to work on luxury cruise liners.

One that had personality and that would be a place that generations of families would come to eat and have fun. For me Giovanni’s on The Hayes has achieved this and so much more, which holds us in good stead against competition from the chain giants.

Eventually I missed my home city and a few years later returned to Cardiff, like many Welsh Italians my first lone business venture was selling ice cream.

Following the success of my first restaurant I was eager to expand and launched, The Continental and Latino’s on Mill Lane, followed by the infamous, No.10 Nightclub. All three were a success and become synonymous with good food, entertainment and glamour and were frequented by celebrities and the movers and shakers alike.

In 2013 I opened, Giovanni’s Park Place which offers a more formal dining experience in comparison to The Hayes and fresh local seafood heavily inspires its menu. As a result the restaurant attracts people from all over the city and beyond, including New Theatre goers as well as cast members of the theatre shows. A list stars often pay a visit too, including Danny from The Script, Barry Manilow and Enrique Iglesias who have all enjoyed our authentic Italian food and entertainment. Most recently Giovanni’s Cookery School and Training Centre launched which in March we expanded to create a larger state-of-theart kitchen and training rooms.

The centrally located multipurpose facility can be utilised as a training school or for team building days and is also available for TV production hire.

However I persevered as I knew it was the right step for Cardiff. Today Mill Lane is one of the most bustling areas in the city and Giovanni’s on The Hayes has never been busier.

It’s hard to sum up success in one sentence as it is down to so many factors. Drive, determination, hard work and having good people around you are all important; however one of my favourite sayings is; “If you believe you can or you believe you can’t then you’re probably right… throw the first pebble, watch the ripple in the pond and make a difference.”

You’ve achieved so much, what are your goals for the future?

There is no such thing as reaching ‘the pinnacle’ as there’s always more you can achieve, my ultimate goals for the future would be launch a Giovanni’s sauce label, have my own cookery programme on television and perhaps even become Mayor of Cardiff.

Giovanni’s is now taking bookings for Christmas. 2015 marks two decades since the Café Quarter was launched. This Autumn Giovanni in collaboration with several other restaurants and bars in the area will host a Street Party to celebrate the landmark anniversary in style. Keep an eye on the website and social media for details.

Cardiff ’s Café Quarter has been an amazing success. How were you involved in this?

When I opened The Continental, Mill Lane was one of the most run down areas in town. It was heavily congested with a three lane road and the area hadn’t been invested in for years. One afternoon I stood at the end of the street and thought “why isn’t Al Fresco dining more popular in the UK?” Having the vision was one thing but throwing the pebble into the pond to bring it to life was a whole other ball game.

To realise the vision I enrolled two other influential business heads in the area, at the time this was the general manager of The Marriott Hotel, Chris Quinn and Developer Michael Eddershaw who owns properties on Mill Lane. They loved the idea and wanted to support my ambitions to transform the street. I appointed an architect to draw my vision which led Michael to contract a model making company to create a 12ft x 12ft model of ‘our Mill Lane’.

The next step was to approach the council to propose the benefits of urban regeneration of Mill Lane, initially they weren’t interested but I purposely left the 12ft x 12ft model in their offices to ensure we remained at front of mind, in the hope that someone’s interest would eventually be piqued and they’d be in touch.

Low and behold I received a phone call from the then visionary city centre manager, Nick Hamilton and the wheels were set in motion to realise Mill Lane as we know and love it today.

Work started in 1995 with amazing cooperation from Police licensing, the fire authorities, WDA and the licencing committee. Mill Lane became such an attraction that it inspired Land Securities, the developers of St David’s Shopping centre to invest in the area.

Ironic in some ways because whilst the centre was being built it nearly crippled my business as the area had become a building site.

Sustainability. People tell me everyone’s talking about sustainability but when I actually ask people what does it mean to them or their business, not many can give me a clear answer. What I do know is that not being sustainable, or not having a sustainability strategy in place could actually harm my business in the near future.

SUSTAINABILITY

The first thing that concerns me is how not having a sustainability strategy in place could harm my business. So I took myself off to the one organisation that might have the answer; Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales.

I started by talking to Rhodri Thomas (Rhodri is Training Manager so knows a thing or two). I asked him how supply chain businesses could be affected?

“It’s quite simple really,” says Rhodri, “Imagine you want to supply a product or service to the public sector, a social enterprise or a major corporation.

You’re asked, or invited, to tender.

Somewhere in your tender document will be a section on sustainability.

The organisation might ask ‘What are your views on sustainability?’, ‘Do you operate sustainably?’. They might even ask for a copy of your company’s sustainability policy.

You don’t have one so you don’t tick the box, or you cobble together an answer that you think will appease the person looking over the tender document. The reality is, or will be, you’ve probably excluded your business from any chance of being considered for the contract.

To companies that have been used to getting contracts, this may come as quite a shock.”

My initial thoughts are this is just more bureaucratic box ticking - the public sector creating more hideous hoops for the down-trodden businesses of Wales to jump through. The truth is we’re living in a world that we haven’t taken particularly good care of for quite some time. We’ve written some big cheques against the environment and, probably most saddening of all, it is our children’s and grandchildren’s generations that will have to honour those debts.

That’s basically what being sustainable is about - not just recycling paper and ‘being green’, but using sustainability to think about how we do business.

There are huge opportunities if we grasp them. Sometimes, unfortunately, when the carrot doesn’t work, government has to wave a stick at us. Over a few weeks, I asked many business people what sustainability meant for them? Nearly all couldn’t really give me a coherent answer.

Most talked about recycling or global warming but when I asked them to talk about ‘sustainability’ in the context of their own business, they struggled.

Perhaps, it’s this ambiguity that is the problem.

After meeting Rhodri, I chatted with Mari Arthur. Mari has recently taken over Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales.

“ Wales faces a number of challenges but together we can meet them and turn a challenge into an opportunity.”

Mari has been in business off and on for most of her working life so can appreciate both the private and public sector approach to sustainability. “Major global brands have embraced the concept of sustainable development seeing it as an opportunity for innovation in product design, service delivery and business models,” she says.

“Being sustainable can save money, make a company more efficient and a workplace safer and more pleasant to be in; it encourages loyalty amongst staff, greater trust from communities and a willingness for partnership and procurement from the public sector.”

I’m intrigued by her enthusiasm. I imagine sustainability is a difficult concept to sell because the perception is that it will cost companies to implement. It’s fine for Coca Cola to ‘be sustainable’, it fits with their marketing strategy, and they have a huge global budget to reinforce their messages, but what about a small supplier Wales? Can they honestly be expected to appreciate there are opportunities here for them?

“We know that the concept of sustainability is the future: business as usual is not an option. So, to encourage Welsh businesses to make the most of emerging legislation and the growing culture of sustainability amongst the major brands, we have developed a university accredited course for the business leaders of Wales. We want Wales to succeed,” Mari says.

“We’ve developed a course for people who are in work and have a management or leadership role. It is assessed at Level 4 which is equivalent to undergraduate. It is ideally suited for someone who has been tasked to develop the sustainability approach of their organisation from a blank page or rudimentary level. Recent students to complete the course are working for Principality Building Society, Melin Homes and ACT Training and have

developed detailed action plans for their organisations as part of their work.

It’s been a very positive experience for the employees and the companies and we feel, with the training, advice and support provided by our team, that the organisations have got a great deal out of the experience but there’s always more we can do. The whole culture has to change.”

Ultimately, the work Cynnal Cymru does ensures leaders have the information and skills to bring about positive change by developing their understanding of the principles of sustainable development. By helping leaders and business owners embrace sustainable development, the chances are business practice will change and start to produce tangible, measurable benefits. It’s always been the case that, practically, if you can show a business a change that makes a profit, it’ll embrace it wholeheartedly.

“I agree,” says Mari. “If businesses large and small improve their sustainability practices, then that company’s customers, the environment, the economy and society will also be the winners in the end.”

Wales faces a number of challenges but together we can meet them and turn a challenge into an opportunity. We see our role as a supportive network that shares learning, challenges thinking and inspires change.”

Later this year, the organisation will host the Sustain Wales Awards to showcase “the excellent examples of what many people and companies in Wales are doing under the umbrella of sustainable development.”

Mari is keen to remind me that their ‘Relevant, Resilient, Responsible’ workshops for management teams develop integrated thinking and teamwork around an ethos of sustainability and business responsibility with the ultimate aim of boosting revenue. This reassurance that sustainability can actually be financially rewarding is probably the key to making sustainability a focus for business. Is it affordable? Is it profitable? Will it contribute positively to the bottom line? Having said that, if we don’t take sustainability seriously we may all pay a much higher price in the long run. The meter is running...

I ask Mari if it’s a challenge getting companies to commit to the sustainability cause and how they are trying to change attitudes. “In May this year we launched a membership drive.

There are many reasons why someone may want to lose weight; such as a wedding, a beach holiday or, with Christmas fast approaching, getting into that little black dress. However, it is important to take a healthy approach to weight reduction and ensure you don’t put the pounds back on again.

WEIGHT LOSS THAT WORKS!

At The Weight Care Centre, Cardiff, Dr. Essam El Fayoumy has had much success with his three tier approach of non-invasive liposuction, fitness training, and diet and nutrition. We chat to one of his clients, Lorna Vale, to find out more.

How did you hear about the Weight Care Centre?

From a friend who had joined after seeing the sign from the bus window whilst traveling into town.

What made you want to go there?

I had been very overweight for a number of years and had done the usual slimming clubs in an attempt to do something about it - the friend had joined this gym and was telling me about it and, I have to confess, I was suspicious - it did sound a bit “faddy”. She was telling me of the meal replacements system that she was on, however in a very short space of

time the results were visible and she was enjoying the physical side of the program that she had been allocated.

It was her results and encouragement that persuaded me to look at the Weight Care Centre.

What plan did you follow?

I follow the full plan which is similar to the Cambridge diet (which wasn’t as much of a replacement system as I had thought) the twice weekly gym sessions and the non-invasive liposuction.

Recently I have also attended either a yoga or Pilates session on a weekly basis. I have to say I am really enjoying all aspects of the regime.

How did you find Dr. Essam El Fayoumy?

There is an easy way to describe him - sweet! Although on my first consultation he did stress that I had a lot of work in front of me and that it wasn’t going to be an instant fix.

He asked about my general health and lifestyle. Only then did he suggest the diet, especially after I confessed that I did have the habit of missing breakfast due to time. He also put together an eating plan that would fit into my normal working day which included foods that I did like, not a single lettuce leaf was suggested to me.

How long is your plan?

The plan is as long as it takes. I have no intention of giving up until I reach my goal weight which was determined more by BMI than a number on the scales. I have to confess recently I have been cheating on the regime, so it will take a bit longer than it should, but I enjoy going to the centre on the thrice weekly basis for the gym and yoga/ Pilates which, although hard work, is very social.

Buying clothes has been an expensive exercise as I had nothing that fitted well enough to be worn if a smart outfit was required and I had no summer clothes that fitted. I enjoy the gym and I also walk a lot more that I have for many years and have been indoor skydiving and water hover boarding recently - loved the former couldn’t do the latter. But both of which I would not have considered doing this time last year. I have much more self-confidence now and I know that it is related to my body image.

Will you continue with the plan once your work with the Weight Care Centre is over?

I know that I still have more work to do before getting to my goal weight and after to maintain. In the past, once I had got to my goal weight, I did not maintain it as I stopped doing all the things that I knew I should do. I have every intention of continuing to attend the Weight Care Centre for both the medical and social benefits.

Are happy to recommend the centre to friends, family and colleagues?

I would and have recommended the centre to friends and colleagues, one of whom has joined recently and is currently doing very well and enjoying the experience. I do however stress that it is not cheap and does require a lot of hard work on your part, but the cost of the program has certainly, in my case, been offset by the fact that I no longer buy a lot of crisps and sweets and food that I throw away.

The cost of the program is probably less than I have paid over the years in various slimming clubs and, at least this time, I have a positive outcome.

Have you seen much improvement since you started?

There has been a change of staff which I was apprehensive about - I was overweight and very self-conscious of my body shape. The girls I started with were very nice and did not make me feel uncomfortable however I needn’t have worried, the new trainers that I work with are just as approachable. They are pleasant but still make you work at the exercises, and I feel as comfortable now as with the original staff members. Since I started the number of services offered has expanded, massage sessions and the more recent yoga and Pilates, the pieces of gym equipment has also been increased offering a wider variety of exercises.

On a personal note my fitness level and body shape has changed dramatically, I no longer feel that a flight of stairs is an exercise session on their own.

However the biggest improvement is the change in my health status. When I started in July of 2014 I was a tablet controlled diabetic, and I also had medication for blood pressure. In an interim check just before Christmas, the decision was to remove the diabetic medication and to see if the sugar levels remained steady. On the last annual diabetes check I had reduced my status from registered diabetic to normal. I am not even in the ‘at risk’ category and my blood pressure had reverted to normal.

How has the regime changed you and your lifestyle?

My food shopping on the whole has improved. I still occasionally have a blow out and eat all the things that I should not but it is now only very occasionally rather than on a weekly basis. I no longer buy a lot of crisps and sweets.

I also use to do a lot of impulse food buying most of which I didn’t eat and would end up being thrown away.

Every once in a while you need a break, and a change, as they say, is as good as a rest - away from the phones, the computers and all that a busy, business lifestyle throws at you. A weekend in London might not sound like a peaceful, relaxing break, given that when you think of London, you think fast paced hustle and bustle but, dear reader, it all depends the destination.

For one weekend in July, InBusiness magazine combined business and pleasure and stayed at one of the UK’s finest five-star hotels, The Stafford, London.

We stayed in a Junior Master Suite in the Main House - a gorgeous suite, comprising of a sitting room, bedroom with a very wide, comfy bed and an impeccably finished bathroom with separate shower and good quality toiletries.

Walk south from Piccadilly on St. James, turn right on to St. James Place and head into the quiet terminal corner of this side street. You’ll feel as if you stepped back to a time of quiet London elegance.

The Stafford Hotel…

First and foremost, it’s independent with a quintessentially British ‘country house’ feel in the heart of London.

It was founded in 1912 and is home to 105 individually decorated bedrooms and suites split across the Main House and the Carriage House, each filled with English décor. During WW2, The Stafford served as a club for American and Canadian officers until 1945.

What’s nearby?

Discover the Secrets of St James’s with a New London Walking Tour by The Stafford’s Executive Concierge, Frank Laino (selected dates). As the hotel is so well situated, you can take in the sights on foot (Buckingham Palace is a mere five minutes’ walk away), Piccadilly, St. James’s Park and the luxury shops on New Bond Street and Mayfair are also within walking distance.

What about the food?

Dine either in the hotel’s Lyttleton Restaurant for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. Head Chef Carlos Martinez offers modern European cuisine and the restaurant is open daily to hotel guests and nonguests alike with lunches starting from around £24 for three courses.

Or you could try The American Bar, where every available wall and surface is crammed with memorabilia, donated by celebrity fans and guests. You could spend hours in here just taking it all in, and many guests do! It was certainly one of our favourite haunts.

How do they keep you entertained?

Before you leave the hotel for some sightseeing, you must take a tour of the Stafford Wine Cellars. Built in the 17th Century by Lord Francis Godolphin, the cellar are 380 years old. The hotel holds regular wine pairing events here.

How are the staff?

This is where this hotel comes into its own. The staff are beyond accommodating and always eager to please. The service is all you would expect from a luxurious, five star hotel but much, much more. Each and every member of staff seemed genuinely pleased to help.

We weren’t surprised to learn that their concierge service has won awards. One member of the team even walked us through the nearby park to Piccadilly to catch a cab as most of the roads were cut off due to the Ride London Festival Of Cycling taking place that weekend.

To sum up…

We have been fortunate enough to stay in quite a few of the best hotels in London over the years but The Stafford, London was an exceptionally luxurious experience, which had the warmth and welcome of a private club with none of the pretentiousness or snobbery. Would we revisit - in a heartbeat!

Our first business, IBI Group, moved here in December 2013 followed by RSAW. These businesses occupied the first space to be developed. The main development was completed in December 2014.

What are your plans for the future?

We have a future phase under consideration, and we also have quite a few new retailers opening in the Morgan Quarter which is great news.

How many companies did you research before choosing Alexander James?

Firstly a friend recommended Alexander James to us, and then I did more research on another fifteen companies online and via the telephone. I like to be thorough!

What made you choose Alexander James?

I particularly liked the telephone manner of the salesperson. He also gave good advice and was not pushing at all to get the sale. He was genuinely friendly. I also visited the showroom to see the manufacturing process and to see what they had to offer.

I was impressed so I then arranged for them to come out and take the measurements. They were also very competitively priced.

Absolutely. How I measure good service is by how a company resolve faults.

There were a few little niggles but that’s to be expected in any job. As soon as we mentioned these, they came around very promptly and effortlessly resolved them.

What were the workmen like?

They were incredibly helpful, prompt and tidy.

How long did the fit take?

It took just a few hours to install.

As it was a new build, it was a straightforward fit.

What difference have the bifolds made to you and your home?

A huge difference. We’ve brought the outside in and extended the usable space. We now have a grown-up living room which myself and my wife can spend time in while the children play in their room.

Bringing the wow factor to Cardiff; the latest addition to the city centre’s bar and club scene was launched recently with a fabulous ‘Made in Chelsea’ style party (see page 71). We managed to track down owner Andrew for a quick chat.

CELLAR BAR

Andrew, what a fabulous night – tell us a bit about Cardiff’s latest VIP bar.

After three weeks of refurbishment works, everything was completed on time ready for the opening night, which was a great success. Oliver Proudlock and Hugo Taylor from ‘Made in Chelsea’ added to the atmosphere and, obviously, attracted a lot of female attention!

Cellar Bar’s focus is on providing customers with a unique combination of a relaxed and comfortable drinking environment, transforming into a late night party venue. Serving traditional cocktails, fine wines and champagnes, we cater for all tastes. We also provide waiter service in our newly designed VIP areas.

The Cellar Bar is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and throughout the summer we will be holding terrace parties in The Brewery Quarter, with live DJs and bands every Saturday afternoon (Welsh weather permitting of course).

What changes have you made?

The whole venue has been completely redecorated and designed in a ‘speakeasy bar’ style with lots of use of wood, soft furnishings and chandelier lighting. There is a completely new wood-cladded bar servery, new seating areas, enhanced ambient lighting as well as traditional oak barrel tables. We have a new ‘library’ style VIP area with Chesterfield sofas, table lamps and antique tables. The venue was part of the original Brains Brewery so we’ve focused on this aspect and stripped back the ceilings to expose the original brickwork in line with the buildings ‘cellar’ origins.

What’s your favourite thing about Cardiff?

Cardiff is becoming more and more cosmopolitan which is great for the city, for business and for consumers.

Obviously nothing can beat an international rugby match day with its incredible atmosphere both before and after games, no matter what the result.

Well we must say we’re looking forward to the outside terrace parties.

According to Andrew these will be held throughout the summer from 3pm-7pm every Saturday - weather dependent of course. There will be a DJ or live band on their outside terrace area and waiter/waitress service, so us lucky lot can enjoy the sunshine, the music and dancing. Bring it on.

Businesses have been investing more and more time, and money, in social media but at the cost of their websites. Lecturer, trainer, coder and designer Corey Hearne of Cog Creative thinks we’re missing a trick. “Online marketing, including social media, should be built on strong foundations,” says Corey. “Think of your website as the base - Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube should all link back to your website.

S.E.OH! #1 Meta tags Adding some meta keywords and meta description to your HTML code used to be enough for you to call it a day. As this practice is used umpteen times, search engines have quickly cottoned on and limited the importance of the meta data. Meta descriptions are not visible on your website, they appear as the text in your search result that describes your website. Meta descriptions need to be well thought out and unique for each page. #2 Large words and little words ‘Large’ words are the top tier searches in your particular market that have high search volume and direct traffic to your website. It will be the phrase that everyone will want to rank for e.g. IT + Services + Wales. The ‘Little’ words will have a smaller search demand e.g. IT companies specialising in Acer computer repairs. ‘Large’ word searches will often have a higher reward but are harder to achieve, whereas ‘little’ word searches can help direct a small and steady stream of traffic to your site.

#3 Know your competitors For your website to be successful in searches it would be hugely beneficial for you to do some research into what the top pages on Google are doing. Find out what they are doing on the pages e.g. what keywords are they using, how often etc. Also, find out what they are doing off it. Have a look through their source code to see their meta tags and compare them to the content you are using. #4 Multiple website strategy It’s in Google’s interest to give users the best search results. A user not finding what they want on the first page of searches might mean they use another search engine. If you offer different services (or products), it’s beneficial to create pages specific to each. Your home page should target the general customer, then create specific keywords for each service that users would search for in Google. Bear in mind that keyword power only constitutes around 15% of what search engines are looking for. The rest is generally how popular your site is by people linking to it.

#5 Importance of a blog Every website needs a blog. It doesn’t matter if you think your customers will not read it, but it’s a massive plus when it comes to SEO. It is important that your businesses blog is self-hosted.

As Wordpress becomes more popular, there are more and more plugins being created to help your blog posts become seen, allowing people to comment and share your post. Also, remember the titles of your posts in your blog will be the titles of the pages, so try to make sure that they match what users would search for in a search engine. #6 Create great content Google loves great, unique content.

Filling your website with good content (especially through your blog page posts) will be a massive plus when users are searching. Talk about items that are important to your specific market. Share them on other sites whilst linking back to yours. Add videos and infographics; people will spend longer viewing these and are more likely to share a video or an image rather than a three page article.

#7 Linking your way to the top The links pointing to your site will be one of the most important aspects of your website’s ability to perform well in searches. The top ranked websites for a particular search are generally the ones with the most links pointing to them. #8 Local listings: a best kept secret The easiest and fastest way to rank well in a particular search will be through a local listing. Local listings are important because they appear in your local searches and on Google Maps. Your rank within that particular search will depend on your exact location and, more often than not, the keywords that you use.

#9 Must have analytics report What better way is there to see how your website is performing in Google than by using Google Analytics? Google Analytics will give you a major insight into how well your site is ranked, the avenues people used to visit the site, days and times your site was at its most popular etc. By being smart, this could really open up an avenue to another market. #10 Set up a Google Plus page Another must do is to set-up a Google Plus page for you or your business.

Doing so will build trust with Google and will improve ranking with local keywords while also allowing your sites posts to be shared across this network.

His first book, called The Rich Rules, is selling like proverbial hot-cakes. The book was launched at Wrexham’s new Carnival of Books festival – but Kevin has found it difficult finding the time to promote a book which majors on ‘steps to wealth and happiness’.

THE R ICH RULES For a man who’s been ‘too busy’ to spend time promoting his new book, Kevin Green can still afford to smile.

His first book, entitled The Rich Rules, is selling like proverbial hot-cakes.

The book was launched at Wrexham’s new Carnival Of Books festival – but Kevin has found it difficult finding the time to promote a book which majors on ‘steps to wealth and happiness’.

Kevin has been clocking up the Air Miles big time as he’s hopped from Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Belgium and, as we type, on to Vietnam.

“Just after launching the book, I was heading for the airport to board a flight to South Africa for a speaking engagement in Johannesburg,” said 51-year-old Kevin.

“The last few weeks, I have been crisscrossing the globe, from The Gulf back to Europe and then to the Far East.

“It seems to be the way of things nowadays as I am lucky to be in demand as a business and motivational public speaker at major events here in the UK and worldwide.

“I had to fit in the book launch just after returning from a trip to New Zealand, so the last few weeks have been a whirlwind and getting time to promote the new book has been a challenge.

“It’s been a bonkers couple of months with all the travelling and I’ve been too busy to actually worry too much about how the book is selling. Having said that, there’s been a flurry of activity and interest in The Rich Rules, which also promises to give the reader 100 profitable business ideas.

“The book is about helping others get in the right mind-set to achieve success.”

“It’s self-penned, which may surprise many as it is well-known that I am dyslexic. That was a challenge, but I worked my way around it and I’m very pleased with the end result.”

Public speaking takes up a lot of Kevin’s time nowadays, but he finds it all very rewarding.

“I’ve been privileged to be on the same speaking bill as former United States President Bill Clinton. Earlier this year, I was on the same bill as Nick Vujicic, a truly inspirational Australian who was born without arms and legs. Nick has a motto, ‘No limbs, no limits’. He’s simply remarkable and a wonderful inspiration. I share Nick’s passion for inspiring and encouraging other people to do better, so the public speaking thing is something very dear to my heart. I believe passionately in helping other people.”

Kevin, now one of the UK’s biggest private sector landlords has revealed his secrets to success in his new book, full title, The Rich Rules, Steps to Wealth and Happiness.

“The book is about helping others get in the right mind-set to achieve success. And part of that is about telling my story and how I got there.

“It’s a no holds barred, ‘this is me’ book, and I know some people might think I’m a bit weird, but that’s OK, Entrepreneurs tend to be a bit different.”

Kevin was homeless in 1988 and his story is truly one of rags to riches.

Congratulations on your first year of business. Since opening, have you made any changes to your studios?

Thank you. And yes, since opening in February 2014 we’ve seen an increase in customers and realised quite quickly that we needed more space and to make a few changes.

We’ve added a brand new piercing room in the basement, which has split that floor up nicely. Our biggest change has been to the barber’s section on the ground floor.

We’ve had a new floor put down and two extra barber’s chairs, giving us four chairs in total. We’ll soon be looking for a local barber to join our expanding team - so if there’s any talent out there looking to work in a great barbershop please contact us.

You‘ve been busy, do you have any further plans for the store?

We’re about to build our online shop so look out for that.

Do I need to book an appointment?

We advise it, we do accept walk-ins for both tattoos and haircuts but it’s always better to book an appointment to avoid disappointment.

Do you have guest artists?

Yes, we do occasionally have guest artists at the shop and recently we’ve had Joe from Vera Street Tattoos, Tanya Buxton from Magnum Circus Cheltenham, and William Jones from Nebula Tattoo Bury Port here. It was great to have them visit, as they all have unique styles of tattooing.

A little bird tells us you’re in training – can you tell us more I’ve now completed three Ironman races and two half Ironman races and I enjoyed them all. I achieved my first Ironman for Ty-Hafan, and this year I’m training for a double Ironman up in Snowdon for an event called the Double Brutal. It consists of a 5 mile swim, 230 mile hilly bike ride and a 52 mile run ascending and descending Snowdon too. It’s going to test my physical and mental abilities, and I can’t wait. I’ll be doing it for the Gumball Foundation which raises money to supply skateparks for underprivileged areas across the world.

Talk us through a typical day (if there is such a thing?)

As much as I try to get some kind of routine going in my life it never happens, but I always keep myself busy. I’m not the kind of guy who enjoys sitting around, and like anyone from the shop will tell you I do get bored easily. When I’m in Cardiff you’ll either find me in the shop having a laugh with the team or I’ll be releasing some endorphins and positive vibes

to my body and mind by swimming at Cardiff International pool, cycling or running. I try and get an office day in once or twice a week just to keep on top of paper work. As for raving my mind in nightclubs and bars, it very rarely happens these days.

Lastly, tell us something not many people know about you.

People think I’m wild 24 hours a day but really I’m very shy. That’s it really.

A recent James Bond themed evening of fund raising in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade organised

by Chris Macnamara of The Brogue Trader was an amazing success. Chris also used the opportunity to announce the launch of his epic 5,000 mile scooter ride through Europe to Croatia to raise £5,000 for the George Thomas Hospice.

LICENCE TO THRILL By the time you have read this, award-winning retailer, Chris Macnamara, Managing Director at The Brogue Trader should be safely home after riding 5,000 miles from his home town of Cardiff to Croatia and back during June to raise much needed funds and awareness for George Thomas Hospice Care.

If you’ve donated and kept up with Chris through his regular video diary on Facebook you will know that Chris more than exceeded his £5,000 target and, as I type this, the fund is fast approaching £6,000.

Chris said, “I am taking on the crazy challenge of riding a Vespa from my home town of Cardiff all the way to Croatia and back - a whopping 5,000 mile round trip in support of George Thomas Hospice Care. Any sponsorship you can assist with however big or small will be much appreciated to help this fantastic charity.”

Prior to the journey, in May, Chris organised a gentlemen’s evening at the Morgan Quarter. “I wanted to raise cash for a great local hospice but also awareness for this local charity, the hospice requires £1.3 million a year to stay open so that is why I’m now riding the scooter across Europe in attempt to raise even more money.”

The event, held on the 19th May in Morgan Arcade was an opportunity for Bond to go Brogue for one night only at an evening entitled License to Thrill, supported by local businesses and in association with and in celebration of the official opening of Watches of Wales, a neighbouring store in the Morgan Arcade, owned and run by local businessman Paul Hornblow.

“It was a fantastic evening,” says Chris, “And it wouldn’t have been the great success without Spiros Fine Dining Caterers who supplied all the waiters and waitresses, the fine canapés and gave superb cooking demonstrations in the Harvey Jones Kitchen store.”

After the event in Morgan Arcade, the hundreds of guests headed for Ten Mill Lane night club who supplied the cocktail bars and then the after show party that went on until the early hours. Bang & Olufsen, the world renowned hi-fi retailer, streamed music throughout the arcade and stayed open to host guests.

Dennis DeMille sang jazz along with James Williams the X-Factor finalist who sang ‘swing’ to entertain the 350 guests who attended. Brian the busker even sang in Bakers Row to get arriving guests in the mood and as they left to continue partying at Ten Mill Lane.

Aston Martin Cardiff attended the event with a fine display of their current models along with an Aston Martin branded hospitality truck so visiting guests could relax from the razz-matazz of the evening and sit or grab a coffee if the free cocktails were getting too much.

Swansea based Harley Davidson came along with a couple of the latest iron horse models for guests to drool over along with some incredibly stylish jackets and helmets to dress their display. The red carpet, gaming tables and the free cocktail and Heineken bars just added to the whole evening as people danced, drank, chatted and purchased plenty of shoes as the Brogue Trader along with Watches of 66

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels.

Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

How did your friendship with Neil come about?

We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design.

Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with?

He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife.

We’re delighted with the result.

Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design?

Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style.

How involved were you in the design process?

I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience.

Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be?

Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to.

Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

Welsh Hearts is an exciting new charity set up to save lives in Wales and to raise awareness of heart disease. We got to meet the founder of Welsh Hearts Sharon Owen and find out what inspired her to set up the charity and to share their successes so far.

Why did you set up Welsh Hearts?

Many people may be surprised to hear that heart disease accounts for a third of all deaths in Wales, where the death rate is higher than the in the majority of countries in Western Europe. This shocked me and it’s a cause close to me on a personal level as I have a heart murmur and whilst it does not affect my day-today life I am very aware of the problems it could cause in the future. I wanted to raise awareness of heart disease and save Welsh lives. I have worked in the charity sector for a number of years so had a great foundation to set up Welsh Hearts in 2013 and I am so proud of what we have achieved in a short space of time.

What has Welsh Hearts achieved since it was launched?

Welsh Hearts is all about managing and preventing heart disease in Wales. There are 8000 sudden cardiac arrests in Wales, with only a 3% survival rate. However when a defibrillator is used, the survival rate increases to 47-50%. We launched the Dai Fib Appeal because our ultimate aim is to place a defibrillator next to every fire extinguisher in Wales. In the last two years

we have distributed 180 defibrillators in communities across Wales and with the help of over 200 medics we have trained over 6,340 people in CPR and how to use the life saving equipment.

We are also very excited to launch a heart-screening program in January 2016 for 14-35 year olds to detect any cardiac abnormalities.

Where does your job take you geographically?

Welsh Hearts takes me all over Wales. My job involves a lot of travelling up and down the country - giving talks, demonstrations and meeting with various people in the medical profession who give up their time for free to further the work of Welsh Hearts.

Do you work alone or do you have a team working with you?

I couldn’t do this job and achieve all of the above without the great team behind me. I am very lucky to have support and commitment from volunteers, those in the medical profession and people throughout Wales who attend our fundraising events and get involved.

How could the people of Wales get involved in Welsh Hearts?

We are in urgent need of volunteers who can fundraise for us by setting up their own events and helping to spread the word.

We are also always in need of Trustees and volunteers to help with the running of Welsh Hearts so if you have skills in finance, admin, marketing/PR and have a couple of hours to spare we would love to hear from you. We also offer free CPR and defibrillator training so if you are interested in this for your local community please get in touch.

What makes you happy?

I love musicals and am planning on getting back on the stage and doing a musical next year to raise money for the charity. Watch this space.
