Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan

We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy

We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

Caveat emptor

Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Important you read this

We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Subscriptions

Apologies, we are not accepting subscriptions at present. However, you can reserve a copy with some of our outlets across the Vale or read articles on www.valelife.co.uk

Missed the last issue?

We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

Green is good

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Not many business success stories begin with a single pound in a purse. But for Nicky Bright, the founder of Nicky Bright Holidays, that’s exactly how it started - not with a business plan, but with a bit of grit-laced magic.

GRIT & GLAMOUR HOW ONE WELSH WOMAN BUILT A HOLIDAY BUSINESS

Today, she manages a growing portfolio of unique and irresistible holiday lets across south and west Wales and never seems to stop. “I’m currently in the process of buying a luxury property at the ‘Manor in Talygarn’. Then there’s ‘The Ynys, near Swansea’ – it’s my most recent purchase - I’ve turned it into a party venue with accommodation. It’s fabulous!”

There’s the Coach House, Bridgend, a luxury five-bedroom house and The Old Stables, a quirky cottage in Pembrokeshire. Last and certainly not least, she’s acquired a luxury caravan at Vale Holiday Park, Porthkerry, near Rhoose on the Heritage Coast. “That overlooks the sea - a place I thoroughly enjoy using myself out of all my holiday lets as I feel I can switch off from work, it is so peaceful just looking at the sea with a glass of wine. I can really unwind there.”

But behind every perfectly plumped towel stack and strategically placed candle is a story. And Nicky’s? It’s one of resilience, reinvention, ambition and relentless determination.

A Fall, A Spark, A Start

“I had one pound to my name when I started,” says Nicky. And yet, from that single pound, something extraordinary began to take shape. “I had an idea,” she says. She began hosting foreign exchange students from affluent families seeking an English education.

“I even hosted the daughter of the Moët & Chandon family. It gave me breathing space. Ten years of stability.”

Then, in 2017, a friend suggested something new - Airbnb. It was in its infancy in the UK, and Nicky saw potential where others saw risk. “I’d always had an eye for interiors,” she explains. “A friend asked me to spruce up her caravan at Trecco Bay, and then more people were recommended to me.”

From there, a new business was born almost accidentally - styling, managing, and renting holiday properties on behalf of owners who didn’t want the hassle. “I sourced all the furniture, rolled up my sleeves and did the makeovers, and managed the bookings. Soon, I had nineteen properties back-to-back. It gave me the foundation I needed.”

“Nicky manages a growing portfolio of unique and irresistible holiday lets across south and west Wales.”

From Gut Feeling to Guest Experience

Ask Nicky what makes a great holiday let, and she won’t quote a design book or Pinterest or Instagram reel.

“It’s instinct,” she says. “When I walk into a property, I think, ‘What will the guest feel when they walk in? Will they say ‘wow?’ It starts with basics - good parking, a fresh smell, warmth. Then I work from there.

She doesn’t chase trends. “I’m not into themes - no seaside stripes or cactus wallpaper. I go for quality, timelessness. It needs to appeal to everyone, and most importantly, it needs to last.”

Flat-pack furniture, for example, is banned. “It’s false economy. It breaks, it wobbles, and guests notice. I have trusted suppliers - companies who build things properly. Guests can tell when something’s been done right –built with care.”

And clearly, it works. Each of her properties has earned a Superhost status - the gold standard in guest satisfaction. “That matters to me,” she says. “It’s recognition that I’m getting it right.”

The Showstopper: The Coach House Of all her projects, one stands out. The Coach House in Bridgend. “It was neglected. Very tired. But I saw what it could become.”

In just one month, Nicky turned it around. She sourced every item herself, oversaw every contractor, and styled it with her signature warmth-meets-wow formula. “I worked my socks off. But I knew it would work.”

It’s this kind of transformation that gives her a buzz. “You can take something overlooked, give it attention, quality, love - and suddenly, people can’t wait to stay in it.”

The Heart of The Ynys

And then there’s The Ynys. A former failing pub in Swansea, reborn as a party venue for weddings, hen and stag weekends, and military groups looking for a secluded, secure stay. “I think it’s great value for money,” she says. “A two-night stay from £2,200 for up to 26, to a three-day long weekend for weddings with up to 125 guests plus 26 with accommodation for £4,000!”

“I wanted it to still serve the community, just in a new way,” Nicky adds. “It’s hard to find affordable wedding venues. Here, a group can book three nights for £4,000. They sort the rest themselves - catering, bar, flowers. I can help with my contacts. But it’s their space.”

Still, not everyone was initially on board. “Locals were unsure. It was their old pub, after all. That’s why I’m hosting an open day this summer - to show them how I’m keeping its spirit alive.”

Inside Her Interiors Business

To feed her growing empire, Nicky needed to order even more furniture and needed kudos from her retailers so she opened a shop in Cardiff which enabled her to secure trade deals with high-end furniture suppliers.

“I needed access to quality items at good prices. The shop gave me credibility. Now I order in bulk, store items in my own warehouse, and use them across properties. It’s streamlined everything.”

Trade shows, overseas trips, local finds - everything becomes inspiration. “I never switch off,” she admits. “I’ll be walking through a market in Italy and think, ‘That’s perfect for the Coach House sofa.’ It’s just how my brain works.”

The Weight of Success

But relentless ambition has its price. Nicky suffered a heart attack recently - a clot near her heart after ignoring symptoms for too long. “I was too busy. I didn’t have time for doctor’s appointments, for tests. It caught up with me.”

Now she tries to be more mindful. “I worry about what would happen if I wasn’t here. My family, my sister - they wouldn’t know how to run it. The business would fade. That thought concerns me.”

Yet, she can’t stop. “I love working. I don’t think I’ll ever retire. This is what I do. It’s who I am.”

The Traveller Within Travel remains a huge part of Nicky’s life. She’s a cruise aficionado - Royal Caribbean is a favourite - and her dream destinations include Thailand, Italy and the south of France.

“I love places with beauty and soul,” she says. “The Norwegian fjords moved me. So did Morocco and Alesund in Norway. The minimalism, the wood, the light – it’s tactile, it’s everything I love.”

When she travels with her daughter, Morgan, they seek comfort and luxury. “We work hard. When we go away, we want plush hotels, beautiful food, space to unwind.”

Trips with her best friend Nicola - a fellow businesswoman - are more about indulgence. “We go to Chelsea Harbour Hotel in London. We take the car –never the train, too much luggage! We stay two nights, bring a week’s worth of clothes, shop, chat, laugh.”

Solo travel isn’t really for her. “I admire women who can do it. But I’d rather share experiences. What’s the point of a beautiful dinner if you’re alone at the table?”

Passports, Problems & Perspective

It’s not all Aperol and sunshine. She was once mugged in Portugal, surrounded the moment she stepped off a cruise ship. Another time, she left her passport on a plane to Norway - a travel disaster that led to frantic calls to the British Embassy and costly replacements.

“I’m more cautious now,” she says. “No flashy clothes, no designer bags. And I always keep my passport on me.”

“One thing is certain - Nicky won’t be stopping any time soon.”

What’s Next for Nicky Bright?

She dreams of buying a crumbling castle in the Brecon Beacons, converting it into a boutique estate of flats and a grand house. In reality, she’s considering selling her current portfolio and focusing on one larger plot - a glamping-style retreat where she can centralise her efforts. “No more motorway traffic, just one beautiful place done properly.” But one thing is certain - she won’t be stopping any time soon.

Three Words That Sum Nicky Up? Passionate. Hard-working. Strong. That’s Nicky in a nutshell. From heartbreak to hospitality maven, she’s proof that life’s biggest setbacks can lead to its brightest chapters - as long as you refuse to give up.

Perched on the Vale of Glamorgan’s dramatic coastline, this vibrant community has grown from a sleepy village into one of the county’s most desirable places to live. With a low crime rate, excellent schools, plentiful amenities, and a strong sense of community, Rhoose is fast becoming the village families are flocking to.

Community spirit at its core

The heartbeat of Rhoose is its people. The village has always had a reputation for friendliness, but in recent years its sense of community has only deepened.

The award-winning Rhoose Stores and Post Office, run with real dedication by Cerian and Joel, is a perfect example – more than just a shop, it’s a place where neighbours meet and catch up. Over at the Premier Stores, Rubin and his team ensure daily essentials are never far away, cementing their place as another local favourite.

Life here is well supported by facilities you’d expect in a much larger town. There’s a welcoming library, a wellused church, and an active social club that keeps the calendar lively.

Next door, the Rhoose Boxing Club has trained generations of local youngsters, instilling confidence and discipline as well as fitness. It’s that blend of tradition and togetherness that sets Rhoose apart.

Did somebody say...

If there’s one thing Rhoose doesn’t lack, it’s food options. The village is spoiled with takeaways and restaurants that locals will tell you are among the best.

Top of the list is the Raj Kinara, widely regarded as one of the county’s finest Indian restaurants. Families also swear by the local Chinese takeaway, perfect for a weekend treat. For fish and chips, nothing quite beats Farnham’s (now with pizzas on the menu too!). Their cod bites have something of a cult following – if you know, you know.

And for those who like to cook at home, Barratts Butchers, run by Matthew, Lyn and their team, offer top-quality meats with a smile. Add in traditional village pubs - The Fontygary Inn, Highwayman, and just down the road in East Aberthaw, the Blue Anchor – and it’s easy to see why Rhoose is as much about enjoying life as living it.

Health and wellbeing, close to home Rhoose also shines when it comes to health. The village boasts two standout services in O’Sullivan Opticians, a trusted name for generations, and Rhoose Pharmacy, run by Claire and her expert team. Both support the village’s GP surgeries and take pressure off busy doctors with services ranging from eye tests to prescribing for minor ailments.

There’s also a respected dental practice in the village, and plenty of opportunities to stay active, from sports clubs to walking the scenic coast path. For many, that mix of care and convenience is one of the reasons Rhoose has become so popular with families and retirees alike.

Shops, salons, and services

Local businesses thrive in Rhoose, and their contribution to village life can’t be overstated. Vale Garage Services, run tirelessly by Jason and his team, is the kind of place you’re grateful to have nearby - lights often burn late into the evening as they go the extra mile for customers (us included).

On the grooming front, Rhoose more than delivers. Deano’s Barbers – Dean and Mike – bring old-school barbering charm, while local salons keep the ladies looking sharp.

At the heart of the community, this small independent pharmacy is more than just a place to pick up prescriptions, it’s a vital healthcare resource helping to relieve pressure on busy local GPs.

R HOOSE PHARMACY

THE LOCAL LIFELINE

For those thinking of moving into the village, or upsizing within it, Chris Davies Estate Agents is the name most people turn to. Owner Andrew Fenton is renowned for his local knowledge and friendly, straightforward approach – just the kind of person you want on your side when making big life decisions.

Families first

It’s no surprise Rhoose is fast becoming the Vale’s family hotspot. Rhoose Primary School is one of the Vale’s most highly regarded, drawing families eager to secure a place. The village offers playgrounds, after-school clubs, and activities that mean children grow up with plenty to do. The real jewel in the crown, though, is Milburn Park. Not only is it a beautiful green space in the heart of the village, but it also hosts two of Rhoose’s biggest annual highlights –the summer music festival and the food festival. Both are family-friendly, full of atmosphere, and increasingly popular with visitors from across the Vale.

The pharmacy proudly offers many NHS Wales funded services, including the Common Ailments Scheme, flu vaccinations, smoking cessation help & support and the UTI service. Our other private services include weight management support and Vitamin B12 injections - all delivered with a personal, compassionate approach.

With a team you know and trust, this pharmacy plays a vital role in keeping the community healthy - reducing unnecessary GP visits while offering prompt, professional care right on your doorstep.

Rhoose Pharmacy

Beyond the park, the coastline between Rhoose Point and Fontygary offers natural adventure for young explorers, while the airport – visible from the village – is a magnet for plane-loving children. Dog owners also love the village for its wide, open spaces. The much-loved Posh Pawz, Katherine’s popular dog grooming salon, is another sign that pets are very much part of the family in Rhoose.

Travel made easy

Despite its village charm, Rhoose is remarkably well connected. Rhoose Station provides regular trains into Cardiff, making it an ideal base for commuters. The 304 bus remains a local favourite, linking Rhoose with Barry, Cardiff, and beyond.

And then there’s the convenience of Cardiff Airport, just minutes away. What surprises newcomers is that the village doesn’t suffer from the aircraft noise you might expect - geography works in Rhoose’s favour, meaning residents enjoy the convenience without the disturbance. For families who love to travel, that’s another big tick.

A village on the rise

Put it all together and it’s easy to see why Rhoose has become one of the Vale of Glamorgan’s most desirable villages. It combines the best of coastal living with the practicalities of modern life, underpinned by a strong community spirit and excellent amenities.

From its shops and salons to its schools and social spaces, Rhoose continues to punch well above its weight. And whether you’re a lifelong resident or a newcomer, one thing is clear: life is very good in Wales’ southernmost village.

In a world filled with fast fashion and fleeting trends, there’s something refreshing about a local business that stands for quality, care, and community.

Nestled in the elegant surroundings of Dunraven Place, Bridgend’s unofficial beauty boulevard, Dean Morgan’s Salon is far more than a local fixture. It’s a luxury destination, a creative powerhouse, and an ever-evolving benchmark of excellence in the UK hair industry.

DEAN MORGAN

THE AWARD-WINNING HAIRSTYLIST

Helmed solely by the discerning and charismatic Dean Morgan, the salon has become one of the most talkedabout names in Welsh hairdressing. While proudly rooted in Bridgend, Dean’s reputation has soared far beyond the town’s borders.

Over the years, Dean has earned national acclaim, placing his name in a rarefied league of UK hair artistry. The proof? A growing collection of prestigious awards and accolades that put him shoulder-to-shoulder with industry heavyweights across the country.

“Sweeping

victories such as 5-Star Hair Salon of the Year (Regional & Overall Wales) in 2022, and further recognition in 2023 and 2024, including a Runner-Up spot for Hair Salon of the Year at the Best of Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards.”

Dean’s personal achievements are equally impressive. In 2024, he was named Businessman of the Year, a celebration of his leadership, resilience, and sharp business acumen in a competitive and fastmoving industry. That same year, his talent was spotlighted with two major national honours: Winner of Colour Technician of the Year at the Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards, and HBA Colour Salon of the Year (UK-wide) – the latter placing his boutique Bridgend salon among the very best colour destinations in Britain.

At the heart of his success is an unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and service. Clients don’t just visit once – they return again and again, often staying loyal for years. “It’s not just about hair,” says Dean. “It’s about trust, transformation, and creating something that empowers someone to feel their absolute best.”

This ethos has helped Dean achieve an enviable string of industry awards, including five consecutive 5-Star Salon ratings from the Good Salon Guide, a rare feat that speaks volumes about consistent excellence in customer experience and technical skill.

When John Holmes boarded a steam train at Paddington Station in July 1944, he was a small boy. A gas mask hung around his neck, a brown paper tag was tied to his coat, and his mother’s face dissolved in the steam as the whistle blew and a life journey began.

SHAPED BY WAR,

WHEELS & L OVE

THE LIFE OF JOHN HOLMES, THE EVACUEE

Like hundreds of thousands of other children, John was part of Operation Pied Piper, Britain’s mass wartime evacuation. His destination was Cornwall, though he had no idea at the time. What awaited him was both heartbreak and belonging, moments of fear and moments of magic –a childhood shaped by war, resilience, and the unexpected kindness of strangers.

Now in his nineties and living in Barry, John has told his story in The Evacuee – a heartfelt memoir that captures not only his own journey but also the experiences of a generation.

Childhood in Hackney

Born in Hackney Hospital in 1934, John grew up in a bustling terraced house with his parents, elder sister Fay, and younger siblings. His father worked as an army cook, while his Welsh mother kept the family going in tough circumstances. Their neighbourhood was poor, “just a notch above slum level,” John recalls, yet life was happy. One of his fondest memories is nibbling broken biscuits from a paper bag his father brought home.

At just four, John was admitted to Queen Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Carshalton with tuberculosis in his bones. He remembers lying in the sunny conservatory, wrapped in brown bandages, listening to Judy Garland sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the wireless – a memory that stayed with him for life. Even as bombs rained down on Croydon, the young boy clung to moments of comfort and hope.

“What awaited him was both heartbreak and belonging, moments of fear and moments of magic – a childhood shaped by war, resilience.”

The Day of Evacuation

London in the Blitz was no place for children. With doodlebugs droning overhead and homes reduced to rubble, the Government launched a mass evacuation. John vividly recalls the chaos of Paddington: “steam, tears, oranges, sandwiches, and gas masks slung round our necks.” Parents weren’t allowed on the platform, making the farewell abrupt and final.

The train journey west carried the children through endless countryside. Fay kept pointing out landmarks to distract them, including the great white horse carved into the hillside at Westbury. “We had no idea where we were going,” John remembers. “Only that it was far, far away from home.”

Life in Cornwall

The children were billeted with different families before John eventually found himself at Caerhays Castle on the Cornish coast. To a boy from the East End, the castle was otherworldly – its sprawling grounds, glistening lake, and towering woods offered both freedom and fascination. “We would fish for trout in the lake and hand them to the cook, who served them in the grand dining hall,” John recalls. “To my young eyes, it was paradise.”

But it wasn’t all freedom. Twenty-three boys slept in one dormitory under the stern gaze of Matron, whose sharp eyes kept them firmly in line. Sundays meant church in the village, while chores like gathering fir cones for the fires taught lessons in discipline and work.

Most significantly, the castle’s garage was filled with the very best motoring marques: Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Lagonda – luxury machines that enthralled the young evacuee. Running his fingers across their polished chrome planted a seed that would grow into a lifelong passion for cars and motoring.

Uncle Harry and Aunty Vi

The most profound chapter of John’s evacuation was his time at Ventonveth Farm with Harry and Violet Watts. They became, in every sense, his surrogate parents. Harry was gruff but fair, a man whose dry humour still echoes in John’s memory. Vi, meanwhile, provided warmth, discipline and food that tasted all the better after long hours in the fields.

“I wanted them to adopt me,” John admits. “They were the family I needed.” Though his London family refused, the bond was permanent. Decades later, Harry and Vi left John their bungalow in Cornwall – a final gesture of love that confirmed what he had always felt: he was one of their own.

From Mines to Aberfan

After the war, John reunited with his family in South Wales. The contrast between Cornwall’s green fields and the coal-stained valleys was stark. Dyslexia and bullying made school a torment, so he left at fifteen to work underground.

Mining was back-breaking, dangerous work. John was once buried alive under two tons of coal, surviving only by luck and the frantic digging of his comrades. He also witnessed one of Britain’s darkest days: the Aberfan disaster of 1966. He joined volunteers clawing through the slurry in search of children trapped in Pantglas Junior School. “I witnessed the strongest men weep like babies – I was among them. God knows I saw things that day I never want to see again.”

Finding Freedom on the Road

The pits may have been his livelihood, but cars were his freedom. From his early BSA Golden Flash motorbike to the Vauxhall Velox he raced in rallies across mid-Wales, John found release in the open road.

He would later own dozens of cars: Triumph Stags, Saabs, Vauxhalls, but Mercedes became his enduring favourite. His pride and joy today is a G-Wagon, solid and dependable, still tinkered with in his Barry garage. “The moment I passed my test,” he says, “the world opened up for me.”

Motoring also led to adventure –caravanning in France, roadside repairs outside Weston-super-Mare, and rallies that tested both car and driver. Every breakdown became part of the story. “If you don’t have a tale to tell at the end of a journey,” John laughs, “did you even go anywhere?”

Love and Family

John’s first marriage to Nancy brought him four daughters - “My Beautiful girls,” he calls them, Kim, Kay, Tracey and Andrea – plus countless family adventures. But it was in later life that he found his greatest love. Meeting Liz, a deputy headmistress and gifted pianist who sang with the Welsh National Opera, transformed his world.

For more than fifty years they shared travels, from cruises on the Norwegian fjords to summers in Madeira, as well as countless happy times in their home in Barry. “From the moment I met her, I never looked at another woman,” John says. “She was everything to me.” Liz passed away recently at the age of 97, leaving John bereft but grateful. “Fifty years wasn’t long enough, but it was a lifetime of love.”

The Evacuee

A Testament to Resilience

John’s memoir is more than just personal recollection. It captures a generation’s experience – the fear of separation, the kindness of strangers, the harsh realities of the mines, the scars of Aberfan, and the simple joys of family and friendship.

It is also a book steeped in gratitude. John speaks often of luck – of being spared in bombings, of the family who took him in, of the chance to build businesses, travel the world, and see his family grow. Today he is a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. “I’ve been very lucky in life and love,” he reflects. “I feel very blessed.”

For Vale Life readers, The Evacuee offers both history and inspiration – a reminder that the extraordinary is often hidden in the lives of ordinary people.

BEHIND THE BOOK

Bringing The Evacuee to life

Helping John tell his story was a journey in itself. What began with weeks of meticulous notetaking soon grew into something much larger – a living history that took us across counties, borders, decades and memories.

To capture his remarkable life, we travelled twice to Cornwall, retracing John’s footsteps through Caerhays Castle, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Ventonveth Farm, where Uncle Harry and Aunty Vi once gave him the love and security he needed. Standing where John had once fished for trout, picked potatoes and explored grand garages filled with Bentleys and Rolls-Royces made his words resonate even more deeply. We met several of John’s old friends and were enthralled by their tales.

In South Wales, we visited the schools he attended in the valleys, piecing together the difficult transition from

rural Cornwall to the once coal-stained streets of Fleur-de-Lys. And then came perhaps the most moving chapter of all: an emotional visit to Aberfan.

John had not returned since that dreadful day in October 1966, when he joined other miners and volunteers digging frantically through the slurry in the hope of saving children trapped inside Pantglas Junior School. More than half a century later, standing quietly among the memorials, John reflected on the pain, the courage, and the unimaginable loss that continues to haunt so many.

Bringing The Evacuee to print has been a privilege - a chance to help a real gentleman preserve his story for future generations, and to ensure that his memories, both joyful and heartbreaking, are never forgotten. I have to say, it was made a little easier because of our shared love of motorcycles and cars. And that many of the places in Cornwall and the Valleys were familiar and hold great memories for me. It’s been a real joy to work on. Mark Roberts

MAKING SPACE WITH CARE: HOUSE CLEARANCES BY

BENNETTS REMOVALS

This year marks a major milestone for Bennetts Removals: 30 years of helping people with home and office moves, secure storage, and house clearances – always with professionalism, compassion, and a truly local touch.

Based in Barry, the family-run business has built its reputation across South Wales and beyond, offering a seamless service whether you’re relocating, storing possessions, or, increasingly, arranging a full or partial house clearance.

From Barry to Beverly Hills, and Back Again

It seems John has always been connected to the removals business. As a child, he would often accompany his mother, Glenda Dawe, to work at Mason’s Removals – her sister’s company – where she answered phones and managed administration. By sixteen, John was working there too, learning the ropes of moving furniture.

In 1988, he decided to try something different – first driving minibuses for National Welsh Bustler, then working for Hawkins Antiques, collecting items from auctions across the UK and France. Many of these antiques were sold successfully back in Barry, and John also learned the art of shipping antiques worldwide.

“Based in Barry, the family-run business has built its reputation across South Wales and beyond.”

By twenty-one, he was ready for a new adventure. In 1991, he moved to the USA, living for two years in the Hollywood Hills and working in a five-star Beverly Hills restaurant, an experience that honed his customer service skills and broadened his horizons.

Returning home, John tried his hand at buying and selling antiques, but the removals trade called him back. “People always move, for all sorts of reasons, and I knew the business like the back of my hand,” he says.

In 1995, with the help of a Prince’s Trust loan, he established Bennetts Removals. The business quickly grew, adding office relocation, storage facilities, packaging supplies, and house clearance services.

House Clearances: Practical, Sensitive, and Sustainable While home and office moves and storage remain core services, John and his team have seen a growing demand for their house-clearance expertise.

From single-item collections to clearing entire properties, Bennetts handles every job with care, efficiency, and attention to detail.

They understand that clearances often come at challenging times – perhaps after a bereavement, a move into care, or a major downsize. Their friendly, respectful approach ensures the process is as stress-free as possible, with every clearance tailored to the customer’s needs.

Importantly, Bennetts clearances aren’t just about removal – they’re about responsible removal. Items are carefully sorted, and the team is skilled at identifying belongings with potential value. Through established contacts, Bennetts can connect customers with local auction houses, ensuring

treasured pieces find new homes and often generating funds for the client.

For everything else, recycling is a priority. Bennetts ensures that as much material as possible is reused or recycled, with the goal of sending as little as possible to landfill.

“30 years of helping people with home and office moves, secure storage, and house clearances – always with professionalism, compassion, and a truly local touch.”

Bennetts Removals has been a Which? Trusted Trader for over six years, earning a Certificate of Distinction and even winning the national Which? Trusted Trader of the Month award. This commitment to quality and transparency has won them countless loyal customers over the past three decades.

They serve Cardiff, Barry, Cowbridge, Penarth, Dinas Powys, and the wider South Wales area, but their vans regularly travel all over the UK, and sometimes further afield. Wherever the destination, the same principles apply: careful handling, clear communication, and respect for the client’s property.

Customers Who Keep Coming Back

Testimonials highlight just how valued Bennetts’ approach is: “Moving from Edinburgh to Cardiff… John and his team were excellent, so professional… nothing was too much trouble.”

Another said: “Excellent service, great guys so helpful… We moved from a new house to a 500-year-old house… wasn’t easy, but for these guys it wasn’t a problem.”

Such feedback reflects the ethos that has carried Bennetts through 30 years in business: do the job well, treat people right, and the recommendations will follow.

PROJECT 1 - PENARTH

“This family bathroom in Penarth was a joy to create! Designed for my returning client this family bathroom was to be mainly used by two young sisters, it balances playful charm with grown-up elegance.

We paired soft pink brick tiles with a warm wood-effect bathroom grade vinyl click floor, and added a light oak double vanity with a marble top for a timeless look. Brushed brass taps and pendant lights bring just the right touch of sophistication to a space that will grow beautifully with them.”

Joanna Prosser

The Tap End

PROJECT 2 - BRIDGEND

“This award-winning bathroom is one of my most talked-about projects capturing attention across social media for its bold yet refined design. By combining two smaller bathrooms into one spacious sanctuary, I was able to create a stunning walk-in shower with a floating terrazzo bench and leave space for a freestanding bath!

I suggested these rich green brick tiles, and brushed brass fixtures. A bespoke walnut vanity and organic-shaped mirror complete the look, blending luxury with a warm, contemporary edge. My clients have been a joy to work with and luckily they love the results as much as everyone else does!”

PROJECT 3 - PENCOED

“A refined balance of luxury and restraint defines this bathroom and meets our clients every need. At its centre, a matte-finish freestanding bath sits in front of a dramatic section of wine-red veined feature tile.

This is echoed again in the walk-in shower, which includes a built-in seat and softly illuminated alcoves. Largeformat ivory porcelain tiles bring calm and cohesion, while brushed nickel fittings add a quiet elegance to this carefully composed space. This was one of two rooms that The Tap End completed at this property, both beautiful and both beautifully different.”

Justine Bullock Director & Designer The Tap End

“This

bathroom project won the Ideal Home Awards Bathroom of the Year 2025.”

BATHROOMS OF COWBRIDGE BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO YOUR BATHROOM

Picture this: a beautiful sunny day. You’re soaking up the rays on your sunbed and can hear the echoes of rolling waves. Sounds relaxing, doesn’t it? This is how you should feel every time you sink into your bathtub. With a few strategic design choices, you can transform your bathroom into the perfect escape from daily stress.

Think about lighting

Firstly, consider how you can maximise the natural light in your bathroom. Natural light helps spaces feel more open and connected to the outdoors, creating a sense of tranquillity. Light colour palettes, mirrors and glossy finishes reflect light, which can make the room feel more spacious. You should also carefully consider the temperature of the light bulbs you use. Cool white light makes a space feel brighter and more energised, whereas warm ambient lighting creates a cosier, more relaxed atmosphere.

Space planning

Creating a sense of openness and flow is key to capturing that tranquil feeling. Swing doors can disrupt this, so pocket or bi-fold doors are often recommended - especially in smaller bathrooms, as they save space and create a more natural flow around the room.

Aromatherapy

Enhance relaxation by using essential oil diffusers, shower steamers and scented candles. Essential oils not only improve air quality but also emit soothing aromas throughout your bathroom.

Aromatherapy is increasingly being incorporated into bathroom design through features such as aroma well technology. Heated towel rails with integrated aroma wells disperse essential oils as they warm, enhancing the ambience and promoting a deeper sense of relaxation.

Hydrotherapy

If you suffer from arthritis, stress or muscle pain, hydrotherapy is worth considering. It has many physical benefits, including improving circulation, reducing inflammation and boosting the immune system. Hydrotherapy baths use water and air pressure through jets to create a massaging effect similar to a hands-on massage.

Depression is not feeling sad or feeling blue. It’s so much more. It’s not a feeling you can “just ignore” or “push through”. There may be a sense of despair or hopelessness. Depression affects how you think, feel, and behave. You may notice a change in appetite. Insomnia may start to creep in. There may be a lack of energy. Concentration might be challenging. Sound familiar?

F EELING BLUE?

Have you considered the role hormones play in depression? Let’s look at a few...

Oestrogen & Progesterone Balance

Having the right balance is crucial. Oestrogen helps create Serotonin which is known as the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter, where are progesterone impacts GABA, the calming neurotransmitter

Thyroid Hormone Levels

If your levels are too high or too low, mood can be impacted.

Cortisol

This is the stress hormone, and too much can exhaust the adrenal gland which in turn can affect mood.

DHEA

Its impact on mood is common when this “feel good” hormone is low.

KNOW YOURSELF

Trust your gut, be self aware

It’s crucial that you don’t ignore your symptoms and seek professional help. However, there are lifestyle habits you can adopt to help you along the way.

Your diet

Avoid: ultra processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar and carbohydrates. Include: mackerel, salmon, sardines, eggs, edamame, walnuts, chia seeds. Eating regularly is helpful. To keep blood sugars level, which in turn helps mood.

Good bedtime routine

In bed by 10pm, no electronics in the bedroom, switch off any blue-light gadgets an hour before bed, cool and dark room.

Sunshine

Be out in the sunshine for 15 minutes per day for vitamin D.

Exercise

Whatever takes your fancy! A brisk, walk, gardening, gym workout!

Do what gives you joy

At the end of January, Roy Clark, 67, a semi-retired roofer and keen skier, originally from the North East, was the first person in Wales to undergo aquablation therapy to treat an uncomfortable enlarged prostate.

ROBOTIC R ELIEF FOR ROOFER ROY

Roy is the first person in Wales to undergo aquablation therapy and says he feels ‘total relief’ as a result of the procedure at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals and would wholeheartedly recommend aquablation and his surgeon Mr Matthew Jeffries.

For a few years before, physically active Roy had an enlarged prostate. Things came to a head at the end of November 2024, when he was having difficulty passing urine. On a trip ‘back home to see the lads’ in December, he had to go to Casualty in the North East and have a catheter fitted in order to be able to drain the fluid build-up and was told to return to his local hospital in Bridgend the following week to have the temporary catheter removed. However, he was told couldn’t get a slot until January for the removal and became so ill, feeling very rough by Christmas Eve, that he had to attend as an emergency on Christmas Day. Fortuitously he saw Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon Mr Matthew Jeffries, who removed the bag and fitted a new one, whilst explaining his treatment options, including the new robotic technique.

No stranger to the Vale Hospital, Roy had experienced orthopaedic care there a few months prior to this second series of visits. The first time it was treatment for a pelvic fracture due to a skiing injury, with Hip specialist Mr Stephen Jones, which is now all fully resolved.

In early January 2025, Roy went to see Mr Jeffries privately, as a selfpay patient at Nuffield Health’s Vale Hospital, this time for robotic aquablation, enhanced by advanced computer software and imaging. Booked in the same month, he was the first patient there ever to undergo the innovative aquablation therapy, a minimally invasive heat-free water-jet procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In the meantime, between consultation and his op, he bravely went ahead with a ski trip to Austria, with his catheter in place!

“They are all absolutely brilliant; you can have a laugh with all the nurses and doctors and they really put you at ease.”

Following discharge after the procedure, he has been absolutely fine and is totally fixed. Annually in the UK, three million men are impacted by BPH and 30,000 require surgery.

Roy Clark cannot speak highly enough of the Nuffield Health team, saying, “They are all absolutely brilliant; you can have a laugh with all the nurses and doctors and they really put you at ease. For the aquablation, I had a general anaesthetic and, as the first ever patient in Wales, agreed that the procedure could be filmed for medical training purposes. Apparently there was quite an audience, including a doctor over from Germany! I was only in overnight, the relief was instant, and I was able to be discharged after breakfast, once the fluids had been flushed through. Mr Jeffries is a marvellous fella, who explained the full process to me, so I knew what to expect. I am so grateful to him and for the new robotic procedure which precisely targets and removes the excess prostate tissue. No more catheters nor excessively frequent loo trips needed now and I can properly get on with enjoying life and focus on being properly semi-retired!”

Aquablation explained

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) affects up to 3 million men in the UK each year.

n Research shows 1 in 2 men aged between 51-60 report they have BPH n Aquablation therapy is an innovative and effective robotically-executed procedure that removes prostate tissue using the power of heat-free water n Patient-reported outcomes show improved symptoms and quality of life as a result of advanced treatment

From the 12th to the 21st September, the 2025 Cowbridge Music Festival will present an eclectic and vibrant line-up across ten days this September, blending chamber music tradition with innovation, Welsh cultural heritage, and global musical influences.

COWBRIDGE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2025

CELEBRATING WELSH TALENT, GLOBAL VOICES & NEW COMMISSIONS

This year’s programme showcases a wealth of Welsh talent, from Sinfonia Cymru’s Seascapes and a new festival commission by John Metcalf to appearances by Dafydd Jones, Kat Rees, and folk trio Vrï. An emphasis on diverse musical voices includes works by underrepresented composers such as Fanny Hensel, Rebecca Clarke, Dora Pejačevič and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

Chamber music remains at the heart of the festival, with performances from the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, Carducci Quartet, and clarinettist Robert Plane, alongside a host of internationally acclaimed artists. Highlights include Brahms’ Horn Trio, Coleridge-Taylor’s Piano Quintet, and the continuation of the festival’s special late-night ‘By Candlelight’ series.

Global connections run throughout the festival: Elaha Soroor performs traditional Afghan music, Tango Calor brings South American flair with a concert and dance workshop, and American musical traditions take centre stage at the jazz brunch and Great American Songbook concert.

Artistic Co-Directors Joseph Fort and Rosalind Ventris said: “Since its inception in 2010, the Cowbridge Music Festival has brought an array of international artists to this beautiful market town in the Vale of Glamorgan, while also providing an important platform for leading Welsh musicians. In 2025, we continue this tradition with a line-up that celebrates the rich musical life of Wales while embracing international perspectives and fresh creative voices. We are delighted that BBC Radio 3 will return for a fourth consecutive year to broadcast the festival.”

In addition to concerts at Holy Cross Parish Church, Cowbridge Town Hall, and the Duke of Wellington Ballroom, the festival offers a Family Concert and Festival Evensong, and concludes with a new musical theatre concert by Welsh of the West End and a jazzy Welshlanguage finale from Kat Rees and the Siglo Section.

Vale Life is delighted to shine a spotlight on the talented Barry-based crime writer M. S. Koll, whose brand-new novel ‘John Smith: Average Joe’ has just rolled off the press and is already working on his next novel, The Three Faces of February.

JOHN SMITH

AN ORDINARY MAN IN EXTRAORDINARY TROUBLE

Known for dark, atmospheric mysteries such as The Chessman Enigma and The Fourth Man, Koll has earned a reputation for weaving authentic detail into gripping fiction – not surprising given his remarkable background as a Master Mariner, nightclub owner, and private investigator.

A man with no past

The new novel follows John Smith, an apparently ordinary man leading a quiet life. But when shadows from his past return to haunt him, Smith is pulled into a violent world of betrayal, vengeance, and survival. As his carefully built life unravels, the question emerges: is he the innocent everyman he claims to be, or something far more dangerous?

The novel crackles with atmosphere and a gritty sense of place. At more than 550 pages, it’s a masterclass in slow-burning tension, exploring how fragile our identities can be when tested by fate.

Designing the story

We were thrilled to collaborate with Michael on bringing John Smith: Average Joe to print. In a creative departure from his earlier titles, the book features a series of bespoke chapter divider illustrations echoing the striking cover theme. Michael was delighted with the design, so much so that he has already commissioned us to produce his next novel.

An extraordinary career

Michael’s life has been anything but ordinary. Before turning to writing around twelve years ago after a spell in hospital, he sailed the seas as a Master Mariner, ran a successful nightclub, and is a qualified private investigator. Those experiences have given him a rich understanding of human nature, crime, and the darker corners of society - all of which shine through in his fiction. He now lives on Barry Dock with his wife, Alison.

Looking ahead

With John Smith: Average Joe, M. S. Koll cements his reputation as one of the principality’s most compelling crime authors. Combining taut storytelling, layered characters, and a strong sense of place, it’s a novel that will resonate with fans of gritty thrillers and thoughtful mysteries alike.

For readers new to his work, it’s the perfect entry point. For longtime followers, it’s proof that Koll’s imagination, much like his varied life, shows no signs of slowing down.

M. S. KOLL

Back catalogue

Before John Smith: Average Joe, Michael (writing as M. S. Koll) had already made literary waves with a string of gritty, standalone crime thrillers featuring detectives Karetzi and Jones.

Each story explores different facets of justice, morality, and survival, often featuring memorable detectives or morally complex protagonists.

The Chessman Enigma (2012)

A chilling debut. A killer leaves headless chess pieces at crime scenes across Wales. Detectives Mike Karetzi and Evan Jones are thrown into a deadly game where every move counts.

Yesterday’s Man (2014)

A powerful story of past mistakes catching up with the present, and the price a man must pay when his history can no longer be buried.

The Big Man (2014)

Gritty, violent, and uncompromising – a tale of crime and power where size and strength aren’t always enough to survive.

No Man (2014)

A dark, brooding novel that questions loyalty, betrayal, and how far someone will go when there’s nowhere left to run.

The Fourth Man (2016)

Detectives Karetzi and Jones, caught in a complex case that tests their partnership and their belief in justice.

Barry’s thriving art scene was recently lit up by the vibrant, emotive work of local artist Tracy Elizabeth Taylor, who held her first solo exhibition at The Gallery on Broad Street.

A BLAZE OF COLOUR TRACY ELIZABETH TAYLOR’S

DAZZLING GALLERY DEBUT

Family, friends, and art lovers flocked to the venue in droves, quickly filling the space across both floors. With the majority of Tracy’s work exhibited upstairs, guests meandered through her collection, drawn in by her striking use of colour and evocative forms.

“Drawn in by her striking use of colour and evocative forms.”

The evening was a lively celebration of creativity and community. Canapés and glasses of prosecco (with a nonalcoholic option in hand for those abstaining) flowed freely, as did the conversation. The energy was electric, with enthusiastic chatter surrounding the art and its creator. Tracy, ever warm and welcoming, was on hand to speak with guests, many of whom snapped up original pieces or eagerly enquired about private commissions.

Following the success of the Barry exhibition, Tracy’s work took pride of place at Penarth Pavilion for the month of July. Set against the Pavilion’s iconic backdrop, her paintings continued to resonate with visitors, and further sales and enquiries cemented her growing reputation as one of the region’s most exciting emerging artists.

Tracy Elizabeth Taylor’s art invites you in - whether it’s the gentle movement of a brushstroke or the bold story each canvas tells. Her ability to connect with people through paint is undeniable, and with two successful exhibitions now under her belt, her creative journey is one to watch.

If you’re interested in acquiring one of Tracy’s unique pieces - or would like to commission something personal for your home - please don’t hesitate to get in touch via Tracy’s socials.

From Cowbridge to Canada in under five hours - Suzanne Cumpston discovers the untamed beauty and warm welcome of Newfoundland, a hidden gem that feels a world away but is surprisingly close to home.

COWBRIDGE TO C ANADA

A TASTE OF NEWFOUNDLAND

Suzanne Cumpston of Sam Smith Travel in Cowbridge recently took a whirlwind four-night break to one of Canada’s most underrated gems – Newfoundland. With breathtaking scenery, an abundance of wildlife, and possibly the best lobster she’s ever eaten, it’s safe to say the trip left a lasting impression. We caught up with Suzanne to hear all about her adventure.

What inspired your trip to Canada?

I’ve been before and absolutely love Canada, so I was keen to discover a new area - and this time it was Newfoundland!

Was it your first time visiting, or have you been before?

I’ve travelled extensively in CanadaThe Rockies, Toronto, Niagara - but Newfoundland was new to me. How long did you stay, and which cities or regions did you visit? It was a short trip - just four nights - but I’ll definitely return for longer. There’s so much more to explore in this incredible province.

Planning & Travel Experience

Was your trip spontaneous or well-researched?

The trip was inspired by WestJet’s new direct route, which took just 5 hours 20 minutes outbound and only 4 hours 20 minutes coming backunbelievably quick! That definitely kickstarted my interest in Newfoundland.

Sam Smith Travel also works with some fantastic Canadian suppliers who were so helpful in recommending must-see areas of this stunning region.

How were the logistics - flights, visas, transport?

The flight was direct, short and very comfortable - a big bonus! The Canadian ESTA was simple to arrange (and we can help with that at Sam Smith Travel). I’d recommend hiring a car for the freedom - driving was easy and enjoyable. That said, if you don’t fancy driving, we can organise preplanned tours or even a cruise.

Any surprises?

Just how fast you can get there!

What stood out most to you – and why?

The Trinity area completely stole my heart. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful, and the ocean views were just magical.

Favourite experiences?

The seafood was unforgettable. I had the freshest lobster I’ve ever eatenfrom pot to kitchen to table all on the same day! The scallops, crab, salmon and cod were also outstanding.

Did you do anything adventurous?

We took a Zodiac boat 20 miles out to sea and saw sperm whales, humpbacks, orcas, dolphins, puffinsyou name it! If you’re lucky, you’ll even see icebergs.

Cultural Impressions

What did you think of Canadian culture and people?

There’s a strong Irish heritage in Newfoundland. St. John’s, the capital, is full of incredible bars, restaurants, nightlife and charm. The colourful houses are delightful - there’s even a street called Jelly Bean Row.

Did you interact with locals? Yes, and they were so warm and friendly. How could they not be, living somewhere so beautiful?

What stood out food-wise?

Have I mentioned the lobster? Honestly, if you’re a seafood lover, you’ll be in heaven. There are also excellent steakhouses, and great options for vegetarians and vegans.

Any memorable customs or quirks?

When driving along the coast, it’s traditional to shout “There she blows!” if you spot a whale - which we often did!

Memorable Moments

Most unforgettable moment?

My personal highlight was our overnight stay at the Fisher’s Loft Inn in Trinity. Dame Judi Dench stayed there while filming The Shipping News. It was just perfect - a wraparound porch with rocking chairs, beautiful views, food grown on-site, and even binoculars in the room to spot whales. It was quintessential and peaceful in every way.

Any funny travel stories?

We named one of the whales Steve, after our very charismatic tour guide. It stuck!

Final Thoughts

What did you take away from this trip? That such an amazing destination is so quick and easy to reach! Newfoundland is a real hidden gem.

Would you recommend it?

Absolutely. I felt totally safe, the people were so welcoming, and the natural beauty, food and experiences were second to none. I completely fell in love!

If you’ve ever longed for an excuse to be gloriously unproductive, book yourself a stay at The Quay Hotel & Spa in Deganwy near Conwy. This place is practically purpose-built for doing very little.

BALCONY BLISS

CHECKING IN AT THE QUAY HOTEL & SPA

“You come here with every intention of exploring North Wales; you stay rooted to your balcony because it’s honestly hard to imagine anywhere else putting on a better show.”

We nabbed a room on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the estuary - a front-row seat to yachts and fishing boats drifting by, gulls wheeling overhead, and the hulking silhouette of Conwy Castle across the water doing its best brooding medieval guardian act.

Mornings started with coffee so good we found ourselves rationing it, just to make the moment last. Afternoons were for aimless balcony loitering. By early evening, it was only right to crack open a bottle of wine and watch the last of the sun paint the water gold. You come here with every intention of exploring North Wales; you stay rooted to your balcony because it’s honestly hard to imagine anywhere else putting on a better show.

Rooms That Make You Forget About Going Out

The rooms are bright, thoughtfully designed, and quietly indulgent without trying too hard. Ours was modern and calming, with soft coastal tones that let the real star - that view - hold centre stage. A bed that seemed to mould around you. Even the bathroom sink had a great view, plus a shower that hit perfect temperature on demand.

The toiletries were a cut above, so that a quick wash after a day out didn’t feel like scrubbing off memories, more like sealing them in with something lightly scented and luxurious. If you’re going to hole up somewhere, you’d want it to be here.

Food That Delivers (And Then Some) We made our way to the Ebb & Flow restaurant, which thankfully is more interested in taste than fuss. Plates arrived that managed to be unfussy yet still quietly impressive. Local ingredients, deftly handled, nothing overcomplicated. Steak cooked to perfection.

At breakfast the next morning, we lingered. Good coffee again (clearly they’re onto something here), easygoing service, and just enough chatter drifting over from other tables to feel companionable without being intrusive.

The Cove Bar was where we let ourselves get talked into trying Welsh gins - a gentle nudge from the bartender and suddenly you’re half-expert in botanicals you can’t pronounce. The atmosphere was that ideal middle ground: relaxed enough to come in straight from a walk, stylish enough to make you glad you did.

A Spa That Knows When to Whisper

The spa here is clever – nicely laid out with a decent size pool. It doesn’t beat you over the head with how tranquil it is. It just is. You shuffle through Himalayan salt air, let your feet soak while quietly wondering why this isn’t a daily ritual back home, and then sweat out any last stress in the infrared sauna. We honestly loved the infrared sauna.

We treated ourselves to an Oskia massage, which felt more like a small, private rescue mission. Knots you didn’t even know you’d collected were persuaded to give up the ghost. Afterwards, you float out into the world, slightly dazed, skin warm, convinced you’re at least five years younger. Ached a little the following day, but it was a good ache.

It’s All About The People

All the scenery, spa days and fancy pillows in the world don’t mean a thing if the staff aren’t up to scratch. The team here make the place sing. Katerina and Anna who made breakfast a breeze, Chandler at reception, Ellie’s easy grin every time we crossed paths, and the housekeeping crew who clearly take personal pride in making sure everything’s spot-on.

Even dinner service was more than just plates and cutlery - Antonio and Phil made sure our evening felt like an event, without ever tipping into pretence.

A Handy Launchpad…

If You Can Drag Yourself Away

Officially this is a four-star hotel, though we’d happily call it five. It’s ridiculously well-placed: a stone’s throw from Conwy’s winding streets and imposing walls, ten minutes from Llandudno’s bright promenade and bustling high street, and with the mighty shoulders of Snowdonia visible in the distance if your legs itch for a climb.

But honestly? The magic is right there on your balcony, glass in hand, watching the sun slip away behind the castle. Debating whether you can stretch out your stay another night. Promising yourself next time, you’ll venture a bit further. Maybe.

That View

Conwy Castle standing guard across the water, yachts and fishing boats gliding by, sunsets that practically demand applause.

Breakfast Done Right.

Good coffee (seriously good), relaxed pace, and staff who make you feel like a regular by your second morning.

The Spa Reset.

Infrared sauna, Himalayan salt air, Oskia massages - and afterwards, you’ll wonder why you ever tolerated everyday stress.

The Balcony Effect.

Even if you arrive with grand plans to scale Snowdon, you might find yourself perfectly happy on a balcony with a bottle.

People Who Care.

From Katerina and Anna’s warm welcome at breakfast to Chandler slipping you chocolate at receptionit’s the team that makes this place hum.

Conwy Town

Quaint harbour, castle walls you can still stomp around, plus a suspension bridge that was once an engineering marvel.

Llandudno

Pastel hotels, a bright pier, enough shops and cafés to derail your ‘just a stroll’ intentions.

Snowdon

The big one. If you fancy bragging rights, lace up. You can nip over to Bettws-y-Coed to pick up some gear. There are several great shops there and the waterfalls are worth the trip. Otherwise, admire it with a pint from a safe distance.

Portmeirion

Fantasy Italianate village by a Welsh hillside. A bit bonkers, totally brilliant.

Parking

Easy. You won’t need to wrestle for a spot.

WiFi

Solid even in the bar - work or Netflix, your choice.

Afternoon Tea

Because you’re on holiday.

Gift Vouchers

Smart if you need an excuse to come back.

Room Tip

Third floor, estuary view, balcony. Trust us.

Looking for a two-night break not too far away, we decided to make our way across the bridge for a spot of shopping and R&R. It’s amazing what you can squeeze into 48 hours.

OVER T HE BRIDGE

BUT NOT SO FAR AWAY

We like Cheltenham a lot, and the Montpelier area very much. It’s a lovely part of this gorgeous spa town and has some beautiful shops, boutiques and eateries. Perfect for strolling and window shopping.

We didn’t get away as early as we’d like (work sometimes gets in the way) but were happy to get there in time to have a good few hours in the afternoon before our meal at the hotel later.

We had booked ourselves in at the four star Cheltenham Chase Hotel. Very reasonably priced and its location just outside Cheltenham bordering the beautiful Cotswolds countryside seemed to fit the bill.

“A warm welcome is provided by the attentive yet unobtrusive staff.”

The Montpelier area is particularly classy. There’s a distinct lack of plastic signage, and wooden facias, gold leaf and original signwriting contribute to an ambience that just makes you feel a little better about the world. Yes, it’s a romantic view of retail but it’s also reassuringly authentic – if there’s a benchmark for a beautiful high street, Montpelier is it. Two or three hours flew by, punctuated by a coffee break, until it was time to head for the hotel.

Dinner was pretty good. The restaurant is very stylishly designed, and the staff couldn’t do enough to make us feel relaxed. A warm welcome is provided by the attentive yet unobtrusive staff. The food was good - there’s an extensive menu and the chef here certainly knows how to cook a steak.

Our room was excellent value for money – it even had a bath which is always nice when you’re away. Nothing ends the day better than a hot bath. This one happened to have a large glass of Baileys with ice on the side, which seemed to complement it well!

The next morning, after a lovely shower (it was excellent), we enjoyed a hearty, full breakfast with good coffee and we decided to hit the shops once more (well it would be rude not to wouldn’t it?!).

VALE SOLICITORS

NEW COWBRIDGE OFFICE

It is full circle for Michael Morgan director of Vale Solicitors Ltd as they open the door at Gwyn House, 58 Eastgate, Cowbridge. “My first job as an eager young Solicitor in 1984 was with Gwyn and Gwyn at these offices. I am now seated in the same room where the late partners in Gwyn and Gwyn, Alun Jones and Norman Roderick, interviewed me and offered me the job over forty years ago. Alun and Norman are still remembered with respect and affection by local people and the legal profession.”

Gwyn and Gwyn was founded in 1867 by Thomas Rees - one of the first Solicitors in Cowbridge and the first Mayor of Cowbridge. His portrait hangs in the Council chamber in the Cowbridge Town Hall along with photographs of his nephews, the Gwyn brothers, who were Cowbridge Solicitors and Town Clerks for decades.

Whilst it is important to play a small part in history Michael and his codirector Jonathan Hewitson are building a firm for the future with a young and talented staff. “I was given my start in a happy and supportive firm at Gwyn and Gwyn,” says Michael. “And we endeavour to do the same for our young people now,” he adds. “Denisa Buciuta and Carys Slack are both excellent young Solicitors who qualified with us and we hope that our current trainee Rebecca will follow their example. Next in line is Grace Prangley who is now concluding the arduous Solicitors Professional Examinations.”

Also in the line up are consultant Solicitors Chris Coates and Jeff Lloyd. “The name that everyone is expecting in Cowbridge is our ace Conveyancer Jo Sloper - regularly recommended by clients and local Estate Agents. Everyone wants Jo!”

Vale Solicitors has always made great customer service its priority. “To be responsive and efficient in working for our clients – that really is important to us,” says Michael. “The phone is always be answered by a human being and our offices in Cowbridge, Barry and Llantwit Major all have accessible ground floor meeting rooms. Clients are looked after by their dedicated Lawyer until their case or transaction is concluded.”

Vale Solicitors offer a full range of legal services from Conveyancing, Wills and Powers of Attorney to Matrimonial and Family issues, Litigation and Mediation. “Whatever your question, please give us a call,” says Michael. “To celebrate the launch of our Cowbridge office we will be holding regular Saturday Morning Free (yes free!)
