Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan

We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy

We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

Caveat emptor

Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Important you read this

We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

Subscriptions

Apologies, we are not accepting subscriptions at present. However, you can reserve a copy with some of our outlets across the Vale or read articles on www.valelife.co.uk

Missed the last issue?

We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing.

Yes, it’s free. Priceless actually!

Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

Green is good

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Welcome to our

issue of Vale Life!

We’re so excited to share our latest edition with you, and this time, we’ve got something special. We’re delighted to welcome Cobbles, A hidden gem of the Vale of Glamorgan back to our cover. If you remember, they were front and centre back in 2016, and we couldn’t be happier to feature them again.

It’s a wonderful reminder of the local gems that make the Vale such a fantastic place to live, shop, and explore.

The Vale is home to so many amazing independent businesses, and we continue to be in awe of the passion and resilience of their owners. Despite the many challenges, they’ve kept going, bringing us incredible products and services that make a real difference in our daily lives. Whether it’s an existing or a new eatery, a charming boutique, or a unique service, the variety and creativity in our community never fail to inspire us.

We hear from our readers all the time how they discover new places through Vale Life, and we’re so proud to bring these local treasures to the forefront. As always, we hope this issue sparks new finds, new favourites and new reasons to love the Vale.

Enjoy the read, and counting ourselves as being one of those independent businesses, thank you for your continued support! Jennifer x

Our cover star!

This autumn/winter issue’s cover star is Chloe Francis-Oakley, owner of Cobbles Kitchen and Deli in Ogmore-by-Sea. Chloe was our cover star back in winter 2016. Chloe’s business has grown significantly since then despite the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. You can read more about Cobbles, Chloe and her amazing team on pages 12 - 17. It's a truly inspirational story of perseverance, hard work and the passion to succeed. Here’s to many more years of success!

The Vale of Glamorgan has a character all of its own. Those of us who are fortunate to live here know it isn’t chocolate box perfect, but it is special.

It’s a place where coastline and countryside sit comfortably side by side, and everyday life is shaped as much by the weather rolling in off the Channel as it is by the communities that call this area home.

From Rhoose, Wales’s most southerly mainland village, the landscape opens out in all directions. Head east and you’ll find Barry (and the legendary Barry Island), with its busy shoreline, evolving food scene, and hardworking, close-knit spirit.

Go west and the road leads to Llantwit Major, where ancient stones, a beautiful church, tucked-away pubs, and a genuine sense of heritage make it somewhere people return to again and again. We especially love Llantwit beach – even in the winter.

Inland, the market town of Cowbridge offers a different rhythm. Independent shops, good coffee, and that slightly timeless feel it never seems to lose.

Pontyclun adds its own energy tooa friendly, growing community that connects the Vale with Rhondda Cynon Taff and the wider region.

Then there’s Penarth (depending on which newspapers you read, one of the most desirable places to live in the UK), elegant but never aloof, and Dinas Powys, a village that still feels like a village despite being so close to Cardiff.

And yes, we’ll happily give Bridgend a mention. Strictly speaking, it’s over the border, but many of us work, shop, or have family ties there, so it earns its place on the map and in our hearts.

The Vale doesn’t shout about itself, and that’s part of its appeal. It’s a place of small discoveries, good people, and landscapes you never quite tire of –whether you were born here or, like many of us, simply chose to make it home. We love the Vale.

This special Christmas season, you’ll find truly unique gifts at Giles Gallery, Pontyclun’s vibrant hub of creativity.

“Maria is redefining feminine expression through her fine art photography.”

A RT & PHOTOGRAPHY BY M ARIA VASQUEZ

Bold, sensual, and deeply emotive, the work of Maria Vasquez transcends traditional portraiture. An internationally recognised fine art photographer and self-portrait artist, Maria creates images that explore the delicate intersections of emotion, femininity, and strength. Her art dares to go where most photography doesn’t – into the raw and unguarded moments that reveal the essence of self.

What began as a personal creative outlet has evolved into a professional practice collected across the world. From Canada and South America to Italy, Spain, and right here in the UK, Maria’s work resonates with those who appreciate originality, sophistication, and authenticity in art.

Each piece, whether a one-of-a-kind original, a limited-edition print or a fine art book, is signed, numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Through her online gallery, collectors can explore a growing portfolio that includes her acclaimed books Love Affair, Love Affair in Black and White, and Muses Den, as well as new mixed-media works in development.

Describing herself as “a self-portrait artist who creates artworks that challenge and redefine feminine expression”, Maria invites Vale Life readers to discover her world of emotion and artistry, and to imagine how her evocative imagery might transform their own interiors.

Chloe Francis-Oakley and Cobbles Kitchen & Deli were our cover stars back in the winter of 2016. Nearly a decade on and through challenges, change and the odd kitchen shift, they’re back in full bloom - fairy lights, feasting tables and all.

BACK WITH A BANG! A WEDDING FEAST TO REMEMBER

“The 10th anniversary is being marked with a menu refresh designed around one idea: bringing people together. This autumn, rustic weekday sharing platters are the new signature.”

When we last featured Chloe Francis-Oakley and her beloved Cobbles Kitchen & Deli, the business was celebrating its first anniversary and things were thriving. Weddings were taking off, locals couldn’t get enough of the breakfasts and brunches, and the team Chloe had built around her felt more like family than staff. But then the world stopped.

What followed for Chloe was not just the typical Covid-era struggle we’ve heard before. This was personal. A deep hit to the gut of a dream. As lockdowns stretched on, Cobbles lost all of its chefs and most of its team. Chloe, like so many in the hospitality trade, was left trying to hold it all together - running the kitchen, doing the admin, washing dishes, keeping the lights on at home and work and being a mother to three children.

Eventually, something had to give. “I remember just sitting outside the house in the car and crashing,” Chloe says. Not in dramatic fashion, but with the quiet exhaustion of someone who’d been holding the weight of an entire business - and life - on her shoulders.

With the restaurant closed, and government loans helping keep the wheels turning (which she’s still paying off), Chloe focused on what could stay open - the deli. And thank goodness she did. As locals fell in love all over again with Cobbles’ stacked sandwiches, house-made baked goods, and New York-style indulgence, the deli became the heartbeat of the business. A heartbeat strong enough to open a second location - this time at The Goodsheds in Barry, complete with Deliveroo and Uber Eats offerings.

And yet, through it all, the restauranther first love - called her back.

Enter The Catch @ Cobbles

During lockdown, Chloe launched The Catch @ Cobbles, a stylish, no-fuss fish and chip cabin nestled right next to the main venue. What could have been a temporary solution quickly became a permanent success. Locals queued out the door.

“We opened on a Bank Holiday and got absolutely slammed,” Chloe laughs. “But it showed us there was a real appetite for good-quality takeaway done properly.” And that’s exactly what The Catch offers. Fresh fish from local suppliers, handmade pies, rissoles, quality meat and veg - all served with a Cobbles twist. Think chippy, but elevated. Not greasy spoons, but goldencrisp dreams. The Catch continues to offer a street-food twist on fish & chips, and with a new Southern-inspired winter menu launching soon, there’s even more reason to make a stop.

At the end of 2022, Chloe made the tough decision to pause service to protect quality while struggling to recruit the right team. Weddings and events kept the barns buzzing, along with the deli and The Catch, but dayto-day dining was put on hold.

In January of this year, with two exceptional chefs on board, Cobbles Kitchen reopened. And now, as it celebrates a decade in business, the restaurant is back with a renewed identity, a fresh menu and a revived energy.

The 10th anniversary is being marked with a menu refresh designed around one idea: bringing people together. This autumn, rustic weekday sharing platters are the new signature. “Platters are social by nature,” Chloe says. “They turn an ordinary lunch into a reason to gather.” The breakfasts are hearty and local and the Sunday roasts are back, offering something to look forward to each week. Afternoon tea platters, available every day (with booking required), are also a huge hit with visitors.

The Weddings

Soulful, Stylish, and Full of Feast Weddings at Cobbles are, in a word, magic. Housed in a Grade II-listed 16th-century barn, the venue carries a warm, unpretentious beauty - thick stone walls, character in every beam, soft light that flatters everything it touches. “It’s the feel of the place,” Chloe explains. “It has such a lovely energy. People pick up on that straight away.”

The venue is perfect for every moment of a wedding, from the Loft Room for ceremonies and celebrations to countless photo opportunities around every corner. But it’s not just about the venue. It’s about the food. Forget chicken or beef and tick-the-box menus. Cobbles is built for feasting. Long tables, hearty portions, shared dishes - food that brings people together. From slow-roasted meats to vibrant vegan spreads, Cobbles offers the kind of food that has guests talking about the wedding long after the last song.

Add to that their ever-popular afternoon teas and Sunday roasts, and you’ve got a venue that can take you from “Yes” to “I do” and then some.

“Weddings at Cobbles

are, in a word, magic. Housed in a Grade IIlisted 16th-century barn”

Looking Ahead

As Cobbles celebrates a decade of success, Chloe is looking to the future with new energy. The next big goal? Accommodation. Somewhere nearby where wedding guests can stay. It’s the natural next step, and knowing Chloe, it won’t be long before it’s a reality. “The deli showed me how much people want what we offer,” she says. “That’s why I want to expand that side of things even more. But the restaurant will always be my baby.”

Today, Cobbles Kitchen, Cobbles Sandwich Co., The Catch, and Cobbles Weddings and Events all operate as part of The Cobbles Collective. Chloe, along with Deli Managers Bud, Ash, and the entire team, are incredibly proud of how the brand has grown. "Our brilliant team is the heart of everything," she says. "They make it all happen, and we're so grateful for their hard work and dedication."

A New Chapter

As winter rolls in, Cobbles Kitchen is more than just a restaurant - it’s a true gathering place. Whether it’s the new weekday sharing platters, hearty breakfasts, or those unmissable Sunday roasts, there’s something to warm you up and bring you together.

With the team now firmly back in place, Chloe can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store for Cobbles. The restaurant has been transformed, but the heart of it remains the same: bringing people together with great food in a warm, welcoming space.

From a family business in Canton to a fresh chapter in Penarth, James Orchard is proving that a warm welcome and a personal touch can turn a high street showroom into a community hub.

F ROM CANTON ROOTS

Kitchenology is set to become a must-visit for anyone looking to blend style, function, and a dash of inspiration into their home.

We chatted to owner James Christian Orchard about how Kitchenology was settling in to its new home in Penarth.

James, let’s start at the beginning. Kitchenology hasn’t always been Kitchenology, has it?

That’s right. The business started life as Radiocraft, back in Canton, Cardiff, in 1949. My family owned and ran it for decades, originally focusing on TVs, audio, and appliances. Over the years, I began to see that our customers wanted more than just products - they wanted complete kitchen and home solutions. That’s when we began evolving into what is now Kitchenology.

You had quite a loyal following in Canton. Was it difficult to move?

In some ways, yes. Canton was home for a long time, and the relationships we built there meant a lot to me. But the exciting part is that so many of those customers have stayed with us. We also had a short stint in Ludlow Street in Penarth which we quickly outgrew. We’ve literally seen familiar faces walk through the door here in Penarth, and that’s hugely rewarding.

How has Penarth welcomed you? Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for better. From the day we opened our Windsor Road showroom, local businesses and residents have been incredibly warm and supportive. I feel genuinely at home here. There’s a wonderful community spirit in Penarth - it’s the kind of place where people want you to succeed.

What sets Kitchenology apart from other kitchen showrooms?

We’re not just about selling kitchens; we’re about creating experiences. We have created a kitchen showroom on the first floor which we are really proud of and which shows off our products at their best. We offer personalised design services, top-quality brands, and something we’re really excited about - cookery demonstrations right here in the showroom. We want people to see appliances in action, taste the results, and leave feeling inspired.

What is the process? How would customers get the ball rolling?

We like to keep things simple – visit our showroom, call us out for a free survey and design, place your order, kitchen and appliances installed.

T O K ITCHEN G LORY

Tell us about these cookery demos. The idea is to make shopping for a kitchen more interactive and enjoyable.

We’ll be working with chefs and home cooks to demonstrate everything from perfecting bread in a steam oven to making a Sunday roast in a combination oven. It’s fun, it’s informative, and it helps customers make confident decisions about their appliances.

Which brands do you work with?

We’re proud to offer a mix of premium and classic brands - Nobilia, Miele, Neff, Siemens, Bosch, and Ashley Ann, to name a few. Whether a customer wants sleek German minimalism or timeless British craftsmanship, we can make it happen.

Can customers just buy appliances?

Absolutely. We can offer appliances for every room in the home, from cooking, laundry, small appliances, dishwashers, floorcare, refrigeration, TV and entertainment, and home and outdoor. We have everything covered.

Do you have any customer feedback that sticks in your mind?

Absolutely. One of my favourites came from one customer, who said: “Excellent service, needed a new hob and it was fitted the next day - staff very helpful and friendly.” Another delighted client said: “James visited mum’s house. Arranged purchase, delivery and installation in doublequick time. Local service at its very best.” Feedback like that makes the hard work worthwhile.

That must be rewarding... It really is. We put a lot of effort into making sure customers feel looked after from the first conversation to the final installation. Another summed it up perfectly when he wrote: “The staff were pleasant, helpful and obliging. Installation done with great care. Very happy indeed.” That’s exactly what we aim for - happiness and peace of mind.

How do you see Kitchenology’s role in the Penarth community?

I’d like us to be more than just a store. I want us to be a place people enjoy visiting, whether they’re shopping for a kitchen or just popping in for a demo. We’re already exploring partnerships with other local independents and looking at ways to host community events.

We are situated next door to the popular women’s fashion boutique, En Vogue and a short walk from the new, equally popular, Hickman’s Bar and Restaurant.

Do you miss anything about Canton?

I miss seeing the old shop every day, but the truth is, moving here has been energising. The customers who followed us are part of the journey, and now we’re making new friends and clients too. It feels like the best of both worlds.

What’s next for Kitchenology?

We’ll keep expanding our kitchen ranges, bringing in new innovations, and, of course, ramping up our programme of cookery events. My goal is to keep the experience fresh and enjoyable - because when people are excited about their homes, they’re excited about their lives.

Do you partner with any other local companies in Cardiff and the Vale?

Yes, we do. We have a long standing relationship with Cardiff Marble. They are a great company and very highly regarded. They have supplied a lot of the showroom worktops for us and everyone loves their product.

Finally, if you had to sum up your message to the people of Penarth?

Thank you - for the welcome, the trust, and the enthusiasm. We’re here to bring your kitchen dreams to life, and I can’t wait to meet more of you, whether you’re old friends from Canton or new faces from just around the corner.

1. Plan for how you live, not just how it looks.

Think about your daily habits - where you make coffee, how you prepare meals, where the kids do homework. A beautiful kitchen that doesn’t suit your lifestyle won’t feel right.

2. Lighting is everything.

Layer your lighting - task lights for cooking, ambient lighting for mood, and accent lights to highlight features. The right light can make even the smallest kitchen feel bigger and warmer.

3. Don’t scrimp on storage.

Well-planned cupboards, pull-outs, and hidden drawers keep clutter off the worktops and make a kitchen feel calm and ordered.

4. Test appliances before you buy. That’s where our cookery demos come in - you get to see how an oven bakes or a hob boils before you commit.

5. Blend timeless design with a personal twist.

Neutral tones and classic finishes age well, but adding a bold splashback, a pop of colour, or a statement handle keeps your kitchen uniquely yours.

When Adam Jones took over The Fox & Hounds in Llancarfan in early 2025, it marked the fulfilment of a long-held dream.

R AISING T HE BAR IN L LANCARFAN

Having honed his craft in some of the country’s finest establishments, including the acclaimed Bar 44 Group and Parador 44 in Cardiff, Adam had always envisioned running his own country pub.

“I’ve worked in some amazing places and learned a lot,” he says, “but the dream was always to have somewhere of my own, a proper village pub with great food, great atmosphere, and great people.”

Today, that dream is very much alive. The Fox, as it is affectionately known locally, is nestled in the heart of one of the Vale’s prettiest villages and is once again buzzing with life. With its riverside beer garden, roaring fires and a menu full of comforting, flavourpacked dishes, The Fox & Hounds is reclaiming its place as the beating heart of Llancarfan, and the Vale.

Can you tell us a little about the history of The Fox & Hounds and its place in Llancarfan village life?

The pub dates back to the 16th century and has been at the centre of village life since. It was once known for fine dining and silver service but the restaurant upstairs was converted into eight en-suite bedrooms twentyfive years ago. The local community are really supportive, and the pub acts as a social hub for many.

How would you describe the atmosphere or ethos of the pub to someone who hasn’t visited before? We’re all about hospitality, anticipating our guests needs and providing generosity with our great food and booze in a cosy pub. The fire is always on if it’s slightly cold, there’s always a smile waiting and we’ll never charge you for extra gravy! We love our music so there’s always a good playlist on and our riverside beer garden is a suntrap in the summer months. It’s a quintessential country pub but we’ve raised the bar with quality pub and British dishes.

For those who haven’t been yet, how would you describe The Fox & Hounds? Riverside pub in the picturesque village of Llancarfan, the pub has a large beer garden, a cosy bar painted in dark green with wood panelling, comfy chairs and a wood burning fire. There are two dining areas, one cosy tucked away and another overlooking the garden with another wood fire burner. Upstairs there are eight ensuite country pub bedrooms - all are going through a renovation.

The setting in Llancarfan is quite special - what makes the location so unique?

We’re only twenty minutes from Cardiff but the community is very rural and surrounded by working farms. The village is very picturesque, it sits in a valley with a river running through it and The Fox is right next door to the local church, St Cadocs, which is famed for its medieval paintings uncovered in the late noughties.

Has the building or interior changed much over the years?

Yes, being an old pub it’s been through a lot. We’ve recently made it our own and returned it to a cosy country pub feel.

Do you have any favourite corners or features of the pub that visitors might not immediately notice?

The big red Chesterfield chair next to the fire in the bar is the spot to be, in perfect view for the bar team to see if your glass needs a refill. Or a cosy lunch on a rainy day by the restaurant fireplace.

“With its riverside beer garden, roaring fires, and menu full of comforting, flavour-packed dishes, The Fox & Hounds is reclaiming its place as the beating heart of Llancarfan, and the Vale.”

Food & Drink

How would you describe your menu and culinary style?

Comfort food with gutsy flavours using the best produce we can get our hands on. The menu changes seasonally but the pub classics will always remain.

Are there any other dishes which have become customer favourites or real signatures?

Pig’s cheek croquettes with pepper ketchup and pork and nduja scotch eggs are popular snacks. Deep-fried Jerusalem artichokes with garlic and lemon sour cream are a popular starter along with the crispy lamb belly, pickled chillies and yoghurt.

For main the ever-popular Ox cheek and red wine pie is always a winner, or roast hake with curry butter sauce and mussels. The pork faggots with gravy and bubble and squeak are flying out and the recent dauphinoise potato pie was well received. The kitchen team’s sticky toffee pudding is a big seller as well as the white chocolate parfait with poached pears and hazelnut praline.

What can diners expect from your drinks list? Local ales, curated wines and cocktails?

We currently serve Wye Valley beers and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord on cask, along with a guest ale. We love an aperitivo so expect negronis, spritz and fizz.

We have a list of forty wines, ranging from the well known crowd pleasers to something a little different.

Are there any seasonal dishes or specials we should look out for?

Curry and a pint every Wednesday£22! It’s got a bit of a following and booking is advised. We do a different curry every Wednesday; Chef Q’s biryani and Malaysian laksa were a triumphwe also offer them as takeaway.

We often have a pie special or whole fish to share and every bank holiday we cook a huge seafood paella in the garden.

Tell us a little about your teamwho’s in the kitchen and who’s front of house?

Our Chef Q runs the kitchen, he’s worked at the Walnut tree and the Fox in St Brides, amazing guy with a relentless work ethic and a real love for food. He’s supported by Teifion who’s worked at Bar 44 and Asador 44. Out front you’ll find myself and Owen with a small team to look after you. Owen worked for Bar 44 and most recently spent a year running a bar on the Gold Coast in Australia.

I did a hotel management apprenticeship with Red Carnation hotels in London, that was an amazing experience and taught me the importance of hospitality and guest care, I then moved back home and worked for Bar 44, mainly opening and running Asador and Hotel Parador 44 as General manager for the last eight years.

What do you think keeps people coming back to The Fox & Hounds? We aim to be consistent with our amazing food offering and service but the main reason is the way we make our guests feel. A big smile and a warm welcome awaits, we endeavour to remember your favourite drink, how you like your steak cooked, if you like extra gravy or your favourite table. We’ll go above and beyond to make sure you have a great time and we’ll create an awesome atmosphere.

Do you welcome families, walkers, dogs? What kind of guests do you typically see?

Everyone is welcome, muddy boots and paws, big families, first dates, a snack by the bar or a hearty meal.

How do you make sure each guest’s experience is memorable?

Hopefully by anticipating our guests needs, making them feel welcome and cared for and doing the best we can to deliver a great time. Going out is expensive as the financial pressure on the industry drives our prices up. Our guests work hard for their money so it’s our duty to provide the best experience and value we can.

Community & Events

The Fox & Hounds is at the heart of Llancarfan. How important is the local community to you?

Massively! Without our amazing locals the pub wouldn’t be here, as they say if you don’t use it you’ll lose it. I’m so grateful for the support from the community and I’m happy to play my part keeping the pub open and part of it.

There’s a real community spirit and the locals throw loads of events, the summer fair was great fun, there’s always an event on at the village hall and Boxing Day is huge with the duck race on the river and tug of war over the ford.

Do you host any events, themed evenings, or special occasions throughout the year?

Our wine tastings are a big hit and we run a quarterly quiz and music night. Weekly curry nights, pie specials are very popular and our Christmas pre-order menu is bringing in the bookings

“Everyone

Looking Ahead

What are your plans for the coming months? New menus, refurbishments, or seasonal celebrations?

Renovations – our rooms are getting an update; boutique country pub feel, ensuite rainfall showers. The beer garden is getting an overhaul with plans for an outdoor kitchen. The menu is seasonal, but the big one is Christmas.

What would you most like visitors to remember about their visit?

Warm hospitality, super tasty food, amazing location, made to feel welcome and looked after every time

Pontyclun has gained a new gem - one that locals have already taken to their hearts. Bottle & Board, the town’s brand-new wine and charcuterie bar, brings a refreshing blend of style, warmth and relaxed luxury to the high street.

BOARDS, BOTTLES, BLISS!

PONTYCLUN UNCORKS SOMETHING SPECIAL

Since opening its doors, it has quickly become the go-to destination for those seeking good wine, great food, and an atmosphere that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile.

The idea behind Bottle & Board was simple: create the kind of place its founders loved visiting themselves.

Co-owners Darren Waters and his wife Kirsty, along with Jack and his partner Laura, wanted a venue that felt intimate yet accessible – somewhere to unwind without needing to travel far. “We wanted to build a venue that feels like a getaway on your doorstep,” says Darren. “A little bit of luxury, but with no pretence.”

“But we knew what we loved – good wine, a welcoming atmosphere, and relaxed social spaces. So we built somewhere we’d genuinely love to spend time ourselves.”

What they’ve created is exactly that. The space is cosy and inviting, offering a carefully curated wine list, beautifully assembled charcuterie and cheese boards, and a standout selection of premium spirits. Customers can enjoy wines from around the world, locally sourced gin and spiced rum from Hensol Gin Distillery, and even Modelo on tap, which has become one of the bar’s unexpected runaway hits.

Despite having backgrounds in building and beauty rather than hospitality, the team approached the venture with passion and a fresh perspective. “We had only a little experience in this industry,” Darren admits with a smile. “But we knew what we loved – good wine, a welcoming atmosphere, and relaxed social spaces. So we built somewhere we’d genuinely love to spend time ourselves.”

“Exclusively, we're the first in Wales to have Modelo on tap.”

The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Bottle & Board has been fully booked every Friday and Saturday night since opening, and their social media following has grown rapidly as locals and visitors share photos of their beautifully presented grazing boards and ambient evening lights. “Seeing the place full, hearing the laughter, watching people unwind – that’s what makes it all worthwhile.” says Kirsty.

Behind the scenes, the four co-owners run every element of the business, with Kirsty and Laura managing the day-today operations. A small, friendly team completes the line-up, each member bringing warmth, enthusiasm, and a genuine love of great service. “We keep things relaxed but attentive,” says Laura. “We want people to feel looked after without feeling fussed.”

Although only newly established, Bottle & Board already plays an active role in the local community. The bar sources from local suppliers wherever possible, supports nearby producers, and is keen to host community-focused evenings in the future. Being Pontyclun residents themselves, the owners value the area’s strong sense of community and its growing, vibrant high street.

And the future looks bright. Alongside themed wine evenings and special tastings, the team plans to expand their offering with coffee, pastries, and brunch-style boards – a daytime extension of the Bottle & Board experience that will allow the venue to open earlier on selected days. “We want to become a day-to-night destination,” Darren explains. “Whether you’re here for a quiet coffee, an afternoon drink, or an evening of wine and boards, we want Bottle & Board to be the place people think of.”

Stylish, independent, family-run, and full of heart, Bottle & Board has arrived, and Pontyclun is already raising a glass.

From timeless wedding memories to scroll-stopping brand visuals, award-winning photographer and videographer Katrina Dimech of Shutter Hire captures life with heart, style and soul. Based in the Vale of Glamorgan, she’s known for her natural, candid approach and her ability to create imagery that feels both personal and effortlessly polished.

IN FOCUS: K ATRINA DIMECH ON LIFE THROUGH THE LENS!

Katrina, tell us the story behind Shutter Hire. How did this adventure begin?

It all started after the birth of my first child. I’ve always been drawn to visual storytelling. My dad was passionate about photography, and I went on to study Film & Video Production at University. Shutter Hire began in 2013, rooted in family values and creativity. What started as a small home studio evolved into a purpose-built space in Dinas Powys, where I now welcome families, couples and brands from across South Wales.

You cover such a broad rangeweddings, newborns, corporate, events, headshots. How do you balance them and is there one you love most? It can be a juggle, but the variety keeps things fresh. Each genre has its challenges and its rewards. Newborns and family work bring an intimacy and warmth, while wedding coverage demands a balance of storytelling, technical skill, and staying calm under pressure. Corporate and branding shoots - headshots, business imageryallow a more controlled environment and give brands a visual voice. I don’t think I could pick a single favourite; I love where the shoot takes me.

Your style is often described as natural, candid, documentary. How do you make people feel comfortable in front of the camera?

I focus on connection first. I chat, laugh and let people be themselves. My goal is to capture genuine moments, to let interactions happen naturally rather than forcing poses. At weddings I’ve been called a “photo ninja” because I blend in and document the day naturally. A relaxed atmosphere always leads to the most authentic images. I also spend time with my clients in their initial consultation to learn more about them and their vision for the end result.

Let’s talk shop - what’s your studio like, and why did you choose Dinas Powys?

The studio is in Camms Corner, Dinas Powys - a quiet spot but convenient, near local amenities. The space is set up for portraits, newborns, cake smashes, and styled shoots with controlled lighting and creative setups. But I also travel for location shoots. The studio gives me flexibility and a base to work from that feels professional and welcoming.

Your move into videography seems natural. How do you integrate video with your photography work? Over time I realised that many clients want both - images and motion. Video adds a deeper dimension: sound, movement and ambience. I approach it with the same storytelling mindset. Whether at a wedding or a corporate launch, video complements the stills, capturing context and life in motion

What’s been your proudest moment so far?

My proudest achievement isn’t a single shoot – it’s the journey itself. I started Shutter Hire as a single mum with nothing but a camera, a dream, and a determination to build something for my son and me. Over the years, that dream has grown into a successful business that now supports my family and gives me the freedom to do what I love every day.

On the business side - how do you stay competitive and deliver on time?

Communication is key. From booking to delivery, I maintain clarity and responsiveness. I’ve built a reputation for reliable turnaround and meeting deadlines. Also, being efficient with workflows, investing in good equipment, and never sacrificing quality helps. Plus, being small means I can pivot and be personal with each client.

What advice would you give to someone hiring a photographer today?

Go beyond price - look at full galleries (not just highlights), meet or speak to them, share your vision and expectations. Make sure you like them as a person because you’ll be spending time together. Ask about turnaround, backup plans, insurance. And finally - trust your gut.

What’s next for Shutter Hire?

Growth in video production is a clear direction, and deeper brand/corporate work. I want to evolve the studio space to host creative collaborations and styled sessions. And I’ll continue refining my style and pushing creative boundaries so that every project feels fresh and true to the people in front of the lens.

Ready to capture your story, brand or big day?

Whether you’re planning a wedding, refreshing your business image, or simply want to freeze life’s fleeting moments, Shutter Hire offers photography and videography with heart. Capturing memories that last a lifetime:

After over two decades at the heart of South Wales’ home design scene, Priory Kitchens has made a bold and exciting new move - outgrowing and saying farewell to its well-established showroom in Pyle and opening a stunning new space in the coastal town of Porthcawl.

PRIORY K ITCHENS

BRINGING BEAUTIFUL DESIGN TO THE COAST

“The new showroom offers a larger footprint, better visibility and sits within a town that’s buzzing with independent businesses and growing footfall. Porthcawl is changing and we wanted to be a part of that.”

Known for their seamless blend of beautiful design, expert craftsmanship and personal service, Priory Kitchens has long been a go-to for homeowners looking to transform their kitchen into something truly special. Now, with their new, larger showroom in a busier location, and the business is poised for an exciting next chapter. We chatted to owners Paula King and Richard Handley about this well respected local business founded back in 2003.

Why the move? Why Porthcawl?

We have absolutely loved our time in Pyle Garden Centre - it’s where we grew our reputation and met so many wonderful customers. But we were now ready for a fresh challenge - and we desperately needed more space.

That’s exactly what Porthcawl has delivered. The new showroom offers a larger footprint, better visibility, and sits within a town that’s buzzing with independent businesses and growing footfall. Porthcawl is changing and we wanted to be a part of that.

“Priory Kitchens isn’t just a design company - we offer a comprehensive, end-to-end service.”

You both felt it was the right time... Absolutely. It just felt like the right place, and the right time, as they say. The move allows us to showcase more of what we do, in a space that truly reflects our design ethos.

What makes Priory different?

From day one, Priory Kitchens has stood out for its collaborative approach and a deep understanding that a kitchen is more than a room - it’s the heart of the home.

Our new Porthcawl showroom is a reflection of that. Designed to inspire and inform, it features a wide variety of kitchen styles - from classic inframe painted kitchens with mantles, to modern handle-less designs with all the very latest appliances from Neff & Smeg. It’s a tactile space where customers can explore materials, ask questions, and really start to visualise their dream kitchen and living spaces.

What do you enjoy about the process?

Richard: We love it when customers come in with ideas they’ve seen online or in magazines. It becomes a conversation. We listen, offer suggestions, and help them bring their vision to life - often with extra touches they hadn’t even thought about using our state-of-the-art software.

Would you describe it as a ‘true startto-finish service’?

That really sums up what we do. Priory Kitchens isn’t just a design company - we offer a comprehensive, end-to-end service. Whether it’s a full kitchen refurbishment or a smart utility room or boot room to match, our team works with a hand-picked network of trusted local tradespeople to ensure every detail is taken care of.

Customers regularly describe the experience as “stress-free,” “collaborative,” and “transformational.”

That’s great feedback for us. It’s this genuine, personalised approach that’s helped us build such a loyal client base across South Wales with some customers returning for their second or even third kitchen when they move; due to the length of time we have been in business!

There is life beyond the kitchen. Do you help clients with other spaces in their homes?

As living spaces evolve, so too has our offering. In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in demand for thoughtfully designed laundry rooms, boot rooms, pantry areas, and bespoke storage. Our ability to bring a designer’s touch to even the most practical spaces is just one more reason why we’re in such high demand. Our customers want homes that work hard but look beautiful, and that’s exactly what we deliver.

PRIOR Y KIT CHENS A fresh chapter by the sea

With their new base in Porthcawl now open, Priory Kitchens is excited to welcome new faces - and some familiar ones too.

The showroom may have changed, but the core values remain the same: innovative design, trusted service, and kitchens that feel like home. Partnered with Neff, Quooker, Silestone, Dekton, Smeg, Hendel and Hendel Handles.

Whether you’re planning a full renovation or just want to be inspired, you’re warmly invited to visit the new Porthcawl showroom and see the Priory difference for yourself.

Venetia Steele Boutique is on a heartfelt mission, raising money in memory of Sochia - a priceless Border Terrier who, in Nicola’s words “lived the best life and was loved beyond measure”.

Look out for Nicola's new boutique coming in 2026!

WHERE T HERE’S HOPE VENETIA STEELE BOUTIQUE FUNDRAISING FOR DOG CHARITY

All proceeds will go to Hope Rescue, which provides a place of safety for vulnerable dogs, rehabilitating and rehoming them whilst working towards lasting change to improve the welfare of all dogs.

At the time of writing, the boutique has not only reached the incredible target of £20,000 but has gone above it, a testament to the strength of the bond between Sochia, her devoted owner Nicola, and the wider community who have rallied behind them. A JustGiving page was set up to help reach that goal.

Nicola adored Sochia with every fibre of her being. She often says she “loved the bones of her” - a simple but powerful phrase that captures just how deep their connection ran. Sochia wasn’t just a pet - she was family, a constant source of joy and comfort, and a reminder of life’s simple pleasures. To celebrate her memory, Nicola has poured her heart into dedicating something special that allows Sochia’s spirit to live on in a truly beautiful way.

The Sochia Dress

Stunning in design, this piece is everything a woman could wish for in a wardrobe favourite. The fit-and-flare style is crafted to flatter the female shape, giving confidence and elegance in equal measure. Available in both plain colours and playful polka dots, it has quickly become one of Venetia Steele Boutique’s most beloved designs. And yes, it even has pockets - a detail that has delighted customers and made it a standout piece. And, at £65, it’s an amazing buy for such a standout piece.

Each time a Sochia Dress is sold, Nicola feels a spark of joy, knowing that her much-loved Border Terrier continues to inspire happiness and style in others. The dress is selling fast, not only because of its timeless appeal but also because of the meaning woven into every stitch. For Nicola, it is more than a garment; it is a tribute, a way of ensuring that Sochia’s memory continues to brighten the lives of others.

Nicola is both humbled and overjoyed to have not only reached but surpassed the fundraising goal. With every dress sold, Sochia’s legacy grows – a legacy of love, loyalty, and the enduring bond between a woman and her best friend.

Our latest photoshoot, which took place at the stunning Coed Y Mwster Hotel in Bridgend, truly captures the essence of autumn fashion. The hotel’s warm, inviting atmosphere, featuring a gorgeous room with an open fire and beautiful antique furniture, provided the perfect backdrop for our autumn collection.

The surrounding grounds, adorned with rich autumnal colours, added a touch of natural beauty that complemented the hues of the clothing, creating a truly magical setting. Whether you’re drawn to the deep reds and oranges of the changing leaves or the soft, muted tones of the boutique’s carefully selected garments, the photoshoot captured the season’s essence beautifully.

At Samantha Budd Boutique, we are passionate about offering quality pieces that allow our customers to express their individuality while feeling confident and stylish. Whether you’re updating your wardrobe with a pair of Robell trousers, exploring our new Danish label Noen, or embracing the quirky charm of Peruzzi, we’re here to help you find clothing that makes you feel your best.

For more than forty years, Jewels Interiors has been transforming homes and businesses across Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan with beautiful, bespoke soft furnishings.

JEWELS I NTERIORS BRINGING BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS TO YOU

Founded in 1983 by Julie Haines, and now run with her daughter Hayley Gittins, this much-loved family business has built its reputation on craftsmanship, creativity and care.

From made-to-measure curtains and blinds to reupholstery and custom cushions, every project is approached with the same dedication to quality and detail that has made Jewels Interiors a trusted name in interior design. Clients often describe Julie and Hayley’s approach as refreshingly personalthey take time to listen, advise and design pieces that perfectly reflect each client’s taste and lifestyle.

A new chapter – on the move

After many successful years in their Penarth shop, Jewels Interiors has embraced a new chapter. With the launch of their fully equipped VW ID Buzz van, the team has taken their design expertise on the road, offering a unique mobile interiors service that brings inspiration, samples and ideas directly to clients’ doors.

“It’s wonderful being able to visit people in their own homes,” says Julie. “We can see the space, the light, the existing furniture - all the details that make a room unique. It helps us guide clients towards designs that really work for them.”

The new mobile setup has proved a hit, especially for busy homeowners and business clients who prefer a relaxed, at-home consultation. Whether you’re in Cardiff or Vale of Glamorgan, Jewels Interiors will come to you with a curated selection of fabrics and materials, from traditional weaves to contemporary prints.

Sustainability and style

Julie and Hayley are passionate about sustainability, and it shows in their work. Rather than discarding a quality chair or sofa, they encourage clients to reupholster and revive. “It’s amazing what a difference fresh fabric and new padding can make,” says Hayley. “You’re keeping something you love, but giving it a new lease of life - and helping the planet too.”

“The new mobile setup has proved a hit with busy homeowners and business clients who prefer a relaxed, at-home consultation.”

Their work features fabrics from many of the UK’s leading suppliers, including Harlequin, Sanderson and Clarke & Clarke, ensuring a wealth of choice for every taste and budget.

A family business with flair

With decades of experience and a keen eye for design, Julie and Hayley continue to deliver interiors that blend comfort, character and craftsmanship. From a single blind to a full home refresh, every project is handled with the same friendly professionalism that has defined Jewels Interiors since day one.

Their ethos remains simple: to make beautiful interiors accessible, enjoyable and entirely personal.

JEWELS: A REAL GEM! What clients say...

We have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Hayley throughout our family home renovation in Penarth. A particularly memorable project was achieved in the family TV room. Hayley recreated this room from a dark and dull aspect into a bold and beautiful space, which not only looks contemporary through her choice of fabrics and colours, but is incredibly functional too.

We've recently moved house and having had Hayley and Julie do curtains and a beautiful footstool in our old house, I knew that I wanted to enlist their help again. They have patiently and expertly helped me choose fabric and wallpaper for most rooms in the house and their advice has been invaluable.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others.

SMOOTHER SKIN

W ITHOUT THE WINCING SAY H ELLO TO

Vale Laser Clinic based in St Athan has brought the first Motus PRO to Wales and owner Emma Griffiths isn’t keeping quiet about it. We find out more.

If you’ve ever flinched your way through laser hair removal, gritted your teeth through a wax, or shaved just to end up with stubble by lunchtime - stop right there. There’s a new machine in town, and it’s about to change everything.

Introducing the Motus PRO – the most advanced, pain-free, skin-type-friendly laser on the market – and guess what?

Vale Laser Clinic is the first in Wales to get their hands on it.

Clinic founder Emma Griffiths isn’t one to do things by halves. When she heard about this next-gen laser that actually works, without the ouch factor, she knew it was time to upgrade.

“It’s not just good – it’s ridiculously good,” says Emma.

We caught up with Emma for a quickfire chat about the Motus PRO and why she’s so excited to bring it to her clients.

Emma, why Motus PRO –and why now?

We’ve always had amazing results with our laser hair removal treatments but it’s been 10 years and technology has moved on, it’s time to upgrade and offer the best service in terms of comfort and results. Laser hair removal has come a long way, but most systems are still a bit... ‘spicy’. This is the first one I’ve seen that’s fast, effective and genuinely comfortable. It’s about time.

And you’re the first in Wales to offer it?

Yep - the very first. I like being ahead of the game. Our clients deserve cutting-edge tech without having to trek to London or beyond. Why shouldn’t we be leading the way in Wales?

So, what’s it like to have a session with Motus PRO?

It’s smooth, fast and weirdly relaxing. Clients are always waiting for the zap – but it doesn’t come! We can use a special ‘Moveo’ handpiece that glides over the skin while gently heating the follicles. It’s safe on all skin types, including darker tones, and it’s fab for those who’ve found other lasers too uncomfortable. Also: legs done in about 15 minutes? Yes please.

“Motus PRO may be the shiny new toy, but Emma and her team have built their reputation on delivering results across a full menu of advanced aesthetic treatments.

Any surprises since it launched?

Just how much people love it. I had one client say it felt like having a warm stone massage. Another thought we hadn’t even started yet! It’s been a total game-changer, and I’m loving the results we’re seeing already.

So, what else is happening at Vale Laser?

Motus PRO may be the shiny new toy, but Emma and her team have built their reputation on delivering results across a full menu of advanced aesthetic treatments. From problem skin to tattoo regrets, they’ve got you covered.

Here’s a taste of what’s on offer:

n Laser Hair Removal – now even better with Motus PRO

n Advanced Skin Treatments – for acne, rosacea, pigmentation and more n Mole, Skin Tag & Thread Vein Removal

n HIFU to lift and tune your skin

n Tattoo Removal – say goodbye to that dodgy wrist ink

n Microneedling, Skin Peels & LED Therapy – because glow is not just for Instagram

n Injectables with our Experienced Nurse Prescriber

All delivered in a clean, clinical space (above St Athan Pharmacy), with plenty of warmth, humour and no hard sell. Just honest advice, proven treatments, and Emma keeping it real.

Party season ready? We’ve got you. Whether you’re heading off for a winter sun escape or gearing up for Christmas parties, now’s the time to get your skin, body and confidence in check.

Laser? Facials? Injectables? Just a decent exfoliation and glow-up? Book a consultation, and the team will help you build the perfect prep plan – with no pressure and plenty of laughs along the way.

Gift Vouchers now available

Want to treat someone you love (or gently hint that you want treating)?

Vale Laser Clinic gift vouchers are available for all treatments – ideal for Christmas, birthdays, or a little “just because”.

Let’s be honest - glowing skin is the gift that keeps on giving.

There’s something quite special about a proper village shop - that welcoming blend of convenience, community spirit and genuine friendliness that seems harder to find these days.

F RESH, LOCAL & PROUD THE VILLAGE SHOP, WICK

In Wick, however, The Village Shop is proving that the traditional model is very much alive and thriving. Run by Kristian and Jonathan, the shop has quickly become the beating heart of the village – a place where locals not only pick up their essentials but catch up with neighbours, enjoy a coffee, and support Welsh producers all at the same time.

“Our goal from day one,” says Kris, “was to create a shop that felt like part of the community – somewhere people genuinely enjoy visiting, not just a place to grab a pint of milk.”

Inside, the shelves are brimming with everyday staples and local treasures alike, from fresh fruit and vegetables, locally sourced meats and dairy, to cakes, confectionery, groceries and newspapers. Welsh produce features proudly, with farm-fresh eggs from Tyn-y-Caeau Farm, Llandow, arriving several times a week and organic bread and pastries from Ground Bakery delivered every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve been blown away by the support,” adds Jon. “Those first few weeks were incredible - the fresh produce was literally flying off the shelves. The village has really taken us to heart.”

Coffee and conversation

At the heart of the shop is The Nook, its cosy and increasingly popular coffee spot. Already a firm favourite with locals, it’s the perfect place to pause and enjoy a freshly brewed coffee and a pastry straight from the oven. With its friendly atmosphere and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread, it’s no surprise that it’s fast becoming one of Wick’s favourite meeting places.

“We wanted somewhere for people to slow down and chat,” says Kris. “A village needs that - somewhere that brings people together. The Nook has turned into exactly that, and we love seeing the same friendly faces every morning.”

“We’re literally blown away by the level of support and custom we have received since opening. The locals have been nothing but brilliant.”

Community at the core Kris and Jon are passionate about keeping The Village Shop at the heart of village life. Their commitment to excellent service, community support and championing local suppliers has been warmly received – and it’s clear that the people of Wick have embraced their vision wholeheartedly.

“Community is everything,” says Jon.

“Whether it’s offering home delivery when someone can’t get out, or helping to promote local producers, it all adds up to keeping Wick connected.”

So, whether you’re popping in for your morning paper, a loaf of artisan bread, or simply a coffee with friends, The Village Shop in Wick offers a warm welcome and a genuine sense of belonging.

Tempting homemade bakes, biscuits and sweet indulgences that change with the seasons - perfect with a coffee or as a little pick-me-up. Their home made Victoria Sponge is super scrummy.

Daily Delights

We love their freshly made filled wraps and rolls in the shop, plus a full fridge of freshly baked pies, pasties and their simply divine Scotch eggs from The Nook. You won't be disappointed.

The deli style Nook Coffee Shop

Open from Wednesday to Saturday, this sweet space is a cosy corner of the store that’s fast become the village’s social hub. Drop by for a cup of expertly brewed coffee and a warm welcome from the team. The sandwiches are legendary with weekly specials. A firm favourite is the grilled peppered brisket pastrami, 3 cheese, horseradish, spinach and spring onion on tiger bread. Oh my!

With the growing demand for self-storage in Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, Masons Self Storage has just unveiled a major expansion to their Barry facility.

M ASONS SELF STORAGE

We sat down with James Mason, Marketing Manager at Masons Self Storage, to learn more about the expansion and what it means for the local community.

James, can you tell us about the recent expansion at the Masons Self Storage facility in Barry?

Absolutely! We’ve just added a new 7,000 square feet section to our Barry facility, which includes 100 additional storage units. These units range in size from 25 to 300 square foot, catering to a wide range of needs. Whether you’re a homeowner looking to declutter, a business managing stock, or someone planning a move, the expansion offers more room for everyone. We’ve also added extra parking spaces, making access even easier for our customers.

What motivated the expansion?

The expansion was driven by the increasing demand for self-storage units in Barry. Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more people in the area needing additional space. We were reaching full occupancy and felt it was time to meet that demand by adding more units. It’s also part of our ongoing commitment to providing secure, accessible, and flexible storage options for our local community.

What makes Masons Self Storage stand out from other storage providers in the area?

One thing that sets us apart is our flexibility and 24/7 access. We know people want their belongings to be available whenever they need them, so providing that around-the-clock access is key for us. Additionally, our facility is secure, with CCTV surveillance, and all of our units are designed to keep your items safe.

We’re also a family-run business with deep roots in the community. Masons Group has been around since 1905, and we’ve always been committed to investing in the local area. This expansion is another example of how we reinvest our profits back into the business to meet our customers’ needs.

What special offers do you have in place to celebrate this expansion?

To celebrate, we’re offering 50% off your first 8 weeks of storage when you sign up and pay for a three-month period. It’s a limited-time offer, but a great opportunity for people to secure a unit at a reduced rate. Whether you need storage for home or business purposes, this is the perfect time to get started.

How has the community responded to this expansion?

The response has been incredible. We had multiple units reserved before the official opening, which shows just how much the local community values the extra space. We’ve always had a strong connection to Barry, the Vale of Glamorgan, and Cardiff, and we’re thrilled to be able to provide even more options for people here.

Any final thoughts for people considering renting a storage unit at Masons Self Storage?

I’d say don’t wait! The demand is already high, and with our special offer, now is the perfect time to secure your unit.

We’ve been helping people create more room for what matters for over 30 years, and we’re excited to continue supporting the people and businesses of Barry. If you need extra space, whether it’s for personal or business use, we’ve got you covered.

Whether it’s a fictional tale of triumph, a journey through change, a family history, or simply the memories that make you who you are, your story matters. And seeing those words beautifully printed and bound in a book? That’s an extraordinary feeling.

Turning memories into manuscripts

For many of us, our most remarkable experiences live quietly in our heads – moments we share around the dinner table or snippets of wisdom passed down to children and grandchildren. But what if those memories could live forever in print? That’s where we can help.

From the first conversation to the moment you hold your finished book, we’ll help you capture your story in a way that feels natural, authentic and deeply personal. You don’t have to be a writer. You just have to have lived.

A story worth telling

Our writers and editors have worked with people from every walk of life – from entrepreneurs and artists to local families wanting to preserve their heritage. We listen, we record, we craft. Then our design and publishing team bring it all to life, creating a book that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to read.

Whether you’d like a few copies to share with family or a book to sell to a wider audience, we’ll guide you every step of the way. Each title we produce carries its own ISBN and is listed with the British Library – ensuring your story is preserved for generations to come.

Your voice, your story

You might be surprised by how powerful it feels to see your words in print. It’s not just a record of where you’ve been, but a gift to those who’ll follow after you. A moment of laughter. A piece of advice. A turning point in your life. All captured and shared.

How to begin

It starts with a chat. Tell us what you’ve written (or would like to write), and we’ll help you plan the next steps. Some clients come to us with detailed notes or diaries; others simply want to sit down for an interview and let us do the writing. However you prefer to work, we’ll make it easy – and enjoyable.

Everyone has a story. What’s yours? So, if you’ve ever thought, “One day I’ll write it down,” why not make that day today? Call or email to arrange a noobligation chat. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your story begins to take shape.

ERICA AUSTIN

The Webb Connection

The Webb Connection: The Story of a Welsh Family is a beautifully crafted memoir by Penarth writer Erica Austin née Webb.

Drawing on years of careful family research, cherished memories and the encouragement of her children and grandchildren, Erica has created a heartfelt record of her Welsh heritage. The book honours the legacy of her late husband, Dudley, and thoughtfully preserves the stories of generations past so they are never forgotten.

With contributions from family members and the impeccable genealogical work of her brother John - supported by further insights from her sister Elizabeth - the book weaves together lineage, personal history and sense of place.

Erica’s dedication, warmth and instinct for storytelling shines through on every page. The result is a touching, elegantly written family chronicle that resonates with anyone interested in ancestry, identity and the ties that hold families together.

We were delighted to be entrusted with the production of Erica’s book and she generously mentioned Mark in her prologue. Her family crest’s latin motto sums up her storytelling perfectly, and also our philosophy: Cum Bono AnimoWith A Good Spirit or With Good Heart.

JOHN HOLMES

The Evacuee: A True Story

John Holmes’ remarkable memoir, The Evacuee, continues to resonate deeply with readers across the Vale and beyond.

Told with disarming honesty and a gentle sense of humour, John’s story traces his journey from childhood innocence to the upheaval of World War II, when he and thousands of other children were sent away under Operation Pied Piper.

What follows is a beautifully detailed account of resilience, friendship, and the quiet courage that defined a generation.

Written in John’s own voice and brought together with our help, The Evacuee captures not only the historical significance of those turbulent years but the emotional truth behind them. Packed with vivid memories, family anecdotes and heartfelt reflections, it is both a personal legacy and an important reminder of Britain’s shared past. A compelling, memorable read for history lovers and families alike.

We were fortunate to be able to accompany John on several occasions to Cornwall during the writing and editing of the book and met many of his friends. We visited places that meant so much to him in. John once described his evacuation as “arriving in paradise”.

“The Evacuee is both a personal legacy and an important reminder of Britain’s shared past.”

We visited the valleys (his home and old school in Fleur de Lys) - we recall a particularly emotional trip to Aberfan, a place John hadn’t visited since the disaster nearly sixty years ago.

John was an absolute joy to work with and we’re so very proud to have helped him tell his story and become his friend.

H EALTH & W ELLBEING

Winter has a way of reminding us that health isn’t a luxury; it’s something we nurture through connection, conversation and small acts of care. In this edition, we shine a spotlight on some of the remarkable local practitioners helping people across Cardiff and The Vale feel stronger, calmer and more supported.

At Vale Laser Clinic, Emma Griffiths continues to lead the way with cutting-edge treatments - including

the arrival of the Motus PRO, apparently Wales’ first pain-free, skin-type-friendly laser system, designed to make hair removal smoother, faster and far more comfortable than older technologies.

For those navigating deeper health challenges, Sage Health & Wellness brings compassionate, structured support to anyone living with ME/CFS, Long Covid or post-viral fatigue, with founder Karen Wright offering tailored

Healthy feet are often overlooked, yet they play a vital role in our overall wellbeing. Thankfully, real expertise isn’t far away.

coaching programmes rooted in lived experience and sustainable recovery.

Closer to home, the long-established Porthkerry Chiropody Practice reminds us that even the simplest treatments – like routine foot care – can make a profound difference to mobility, comfort and confidence, particularly during the colder months when many of us slow down.

PORTHKERRY CHIROPODY PRACTICE

Celebrating its 40th anniversary next year, the practice has been trusted by generations of local families. Offering a full range of chiropody services, they treat common foot concerns such as corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, cracked heels and fungal infections, as well as providing routine nail cutting and diabetic foot care.

For many patients, myself included, a regular appointment every couple of months makes all the difference - feet not only look better but feel lighter, healthier and more comfortable.

Great testimonials

Local patients are quick to praise the practice. One gentleman noted that his “feet look and feel so much better after a treatment - money well spent,” while another review simply read: “Excellent service and friendly staff.” Having visited personally, we can wholeheartedly endorse the quality of care on offer.

It's reasonably priced...

With treatments costing a little under £40 for over 60s, it’s a small investment in comfort, mobility and peace of mind. Whether you’re dealing with persistent foot problems or just want to keep your feet in their best condition, Porthkerry Chiropody Practice continues to offer a reassuring, professional service - now with decades of experience behind them.

And in a powerful, personal feature, Angharad Evans shares her journey from autoimmune illness to renewed health, and how that transformation led her to help others through kinesiology and a holistic understanding of the body’s signals.

Together, these stories offer reassurance, inspiration and a gentle seasonal reminder: prioritise your health, stay connected, and never underestimate the value of talkingespecially at this time of year. Above all, be kind to yourselves.

If you’re living with ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long Covid, or Post-Viral Fatigue and feel stuck under a cloud of symptoms, Sage Health & Wellness is here to help you reclaim your life.

SAGE H EALTH & WELLNESS

YOUR WAY BACK TO HEALTH

Founded by Karen Wright, a former NHS physiotherapist who has personally walked the journey of recovery, Sage offers compassionate, expert support rooted in real understanding.

Karen specialises in helping clients discover tools and strategies that bring lasting positive change - not quick fixes, but sustainable progress. Sage offers three tailored packages for different stages of your recovery:

Equinox Package

Group coaching that’s rich in guidance, learning, and strategy. Perfect if you need structure, knowledge, and community to begin your path toward wellness.

Chrysalis Package

A blend of group work (via Equinox) plus one-to-one coaching for around three months. Ideal if you want both learning and the personal accountability to apply it steadily.

Solstice Package

Fully bespoke one-to-one coaching, full access to the Equinox resources, and between-session text support. For those who need a deeper, more private journey or want to focus intensively on particular symptoms or goals.

One client, Sue from Bridgend, said: “Karen is extremely professional, approachable and understanding, giving me the expert advice needed while also supporting me with building my strength and stamina appropriately... I highly recommend Karen.”

You don’t have to live with confusion or fatigue

With Sage Health & Wellness, you get support from someone who has been there, who knows what the recovery feels like, and who can guide you toward a full, balanced, and healthier life. When you’re ready to make change, you don’t have to do it alone.

When you feel you have no control over any aspect of life, you grab any sort of control. I turned to my hair. I’ve been peroxide blonde, strawberry blonde, copper, brunette; you name it, I tried it. I wasn’t conscious of what I was doing, of course.

F ROM ‘ABNORMAL TO NORMAL’

I was a passive participant in a malfunctioning body. My days were short. I was tired yet not sleeping. My whole body would pound all night long with inflammation. The hardest part? The pain and stiffness. “Miss, you look like you’re walking to the gallows” was a comment from a Year 8 student as I walked across the yard. Putting one foot in front of the other was a struggle.

I was desperate, irritated, frustrated, resentful. My life as I knew it, had disappeared overnight, and I was left with a long list of symptoms, immune suppressants for life and a diagnosis of Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder.

My totally bonkers solution was to go travelling, on my own, to other side of the world. Did I say that I was desperate?! I saw no other solution. To me, it was the most logical thing to do. I needed to escape this hell.

Six months away shifted my mindset. I came home, inspired, and determined to try different therapies ‘until I found the one that worked for me’. It was like the flickering of a light switch. I had a new plan.

Fast forward another 6 months: I knew this plan of mine was working but I had proof when I heard these words “Your blood test results are normal”. Not long after this, I decided to retrain and become a Kinesiologist.

My own healing continues, and my own learning continues.

An auto-immunity diagnosis for me was a massive wake-up call. It was my body saying “Stop pleasing everybody else”. “Stand up for what you want and need”.

I had a massive purpose to fulfil. I wasn’t on the path to fulfil it. This is what was out of control.

During the 18th century there were over a thousand makeshift distilleries dotted around the city: London was the unofficial gin capital of the world. As its popularity grew so too did its unregulated production. The air was filled with laughter, clinking glasses and warm greetings recently as Vale Solicitors officially opened the doors to their newest office at Gwyn House, 58 Eastgate, Cowbridge.

A GRAND OPENING I N COWBRIDGE

VALE SOLICITORS UNVEILS NEW CHAPTER AT GWYN HOUSE

Guests milled through bright spaces while a buffet table laden with nibbles tempted their taste buds - and a generous supply of drinks kept the conversation flowing into the evening.

The occasion drew an enthusiastic gathering, including staff, family members, local suppliers, and prominent members of Cowbridge’s business community. Partners at the firm offered heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended: from those behind the scenes arranging the catering through to the business neighbours who stopped by to show their support.

Among the attendees was Arthur, the firm’s resident black Labrador, who seemed to regard his role in the evening as particularly vital. While he was on hand to greet visitors at the door, many suspected his true calling was hovering around the buffet table, ready to scoop up any wayward crumbs or morsels that might fall.

Vale Solicitors’ move into Gwyn House marks more than just a new address. It reflects the firm’s continued growth and commitment to serving clients throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond.

“Among the attendees was Arthur, the firm’s resident black Labrador.”

On the business side, they assist with business law, including advice on contracts, commercial disputes and corporate matters. Property law and conveyancing are also key services - helping clients buy, sell or transfer property efficiently and with full legal compliance.

The firm has accredited and experienced mediators, able to assist in resolving disputes outside of court. Across all these, Vale Solicitors aim to be approachable, knowledgeable and responsive, ensuring legal support is tailored to each client’s needs.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands: The “Mini Maldives” of Europe Closer to home but worlds away from the everyday, Fuerteventura is the Canary Island that embodies luxury. With over 210 miles of golden beaches, rolling volcanic dunes, and crystal-clear Atlantic waters, it’s a haven for those who find freedom in the wind and waves.

Known as the “Mini Maldives”, this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve offers both tranquillity and thrill. Its gentle winds and calm turquoise lagoons make it a world-class destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding.

Whether you’re gliding across the waves or relaxing on soft sands with a chilled drink in hand, Fuerteventura captures the essence of effortless elegance.

For those who prefer to explore beneath the surface, the island’s coastal shelf creates Caribbean-like shallows that are perfect for snorkelling among shoals of colourful fish, playful dolphins, and graceful sea turtles. Inland, explore whitewashed villages, local markets, and family-run restaurants where Canarian cuisine shines, from fresh grilled fish and wrinkled potatoes with spicy mojo sauce.

As the sun sets, unwind in boutique seaside hotels or luxurious eco-retreats, each designed to blend seamlessly with the island’s serene landscape. Whether you’re chasing the wind, the waves, or a little wellness, Fuerteventura offers a slower rhythm of indulgence, where nature and luxury live side by side.

A L EGACY OF L OVE RUNNING FOR HELEN

In September 2014, Helen Phillips passed away from breast cancer at just 38. A twin and one of five daughters from Pendoylan near Cowbridge, Helen’s warmth and strength continue to inspire a powerful legacy of love, action and fundraising.

In 2016, family and friends hosted the Wildflower Ball at Hensol Castle to mark what would have been the 40th birthdays of Helen and her twin sister Kay. The ball raised over £25,000 for Velindre, and was featured in Vale Life’s Spring 2016 issue.

Since then, the family’s dedication to raising funds and awareness hasn’t stopped. Kay has trekked in the Himalayas for breast cancer awareness charity Coppafeel, while Helen’s husband Nic has taken on numerous endurance events, including the Velindre West Coast bike ride across the U.S., alongside two of Helen’s brothers-in-law.

March 2026 will mark a special milestone - the twins’ 50th birthdays

To honour her sister, Kay will be running the London Marathon, joined by Helen’s goddaughter and niece, Becky. Both are raising funds for Coppafeel, continuing the mission to support early detection and save lives.
