Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan

We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy

We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

Caveat emptor

Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Important you read this

We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

Subscriptions

Apologies, we are not accepting subscriptions at present. However, you can reserve a copy with some of our outlets across the Vale or read articles on www.valelife.co.uk

Missed the last issue?

We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually!

Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

Green is good

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

I could write my usual fluffy introduction to this issue - blue skies, daffodils, and light clothing layers but I think we need to go a bit deeper.

Many of us go about our day looking like we’ve got it a lid on everything but that’s just surface bluff and, more often than not, it’s not quite as together as we’d care to admit.

With the economy as it is and neither political party knowing what to do about it (apart from making things worse!), it’s ok to be honest and instead of answering “how are you?” with “great thanks, how are you?”, perhaps we could all be up front and say “things are a bit crap actually”, “I’m struggling to pay the bills, buy food, clothe my kids etc.”. I think we are at the point where “keeping a stiff upper lip” is becoming harder and harder.

If you’re one of the lucky ones with a good, regular salary hitting your bank account each month, then good luck to you. We need you to bolster up this stagnant economy. My heart is going out to all the self-employed, small to medium sized business owners here. The ones who dread opening that coffee shop, restaurant, boutique, beauty salon and the like every morning as they know they have to pay salaries (even if they don’t take any money themselves).

They battle to pay the everincreasing utilities, hope that bookings come in or customers walk through the door and buy something rather than just browsing or sheltering from the rain. It’s tough. It’s probably going to get tougher.

What can we/you do? We can, when we are able, shop in the local high street to keep them open (as tempting and convenient as it is to buy online), book a table at the local restaurant and tip the staff, buy your meat from your local butcher to help them and the local farming community stay in business and remind them they are valued.

That thing you were going to order from Amazo? Can you get it locally? Honestly, Jeff Bezos will be fine.

Honestly, sometimes we have to pinch ourselves. The Vale of Glamorgan is the perfect blend of coast and country.

The Vale is pretty special. Yes, it’s the most southern county in Wales. It’s also home, and we really do love it here.

Waking up in Rhoose is quite magical in spring. The sparrows are squabbling in the garden and the sound of gulls can be heard gliding overheard. It’s often punctuated by the odd jet taking off, but we like that too.

The Vale boasts stunning coastline and great beaches but it’s also about the hidden gems - our towns and villages. Each one has its own personality, with quirky independent businesses that make every stroll an adventure.

Creative Bridge, the brainchild of co-directors Giancarlo Cancelliere and Fiona Thorne opened its doors in Vere Street, Barry, in the spring of 2022. Since then, popularity has grown not only in south Wales but as far afield as Texas, USA!

C REATIVE B RIDGE

Vale Life wanted to find out more about this creative business making waves across the world.

What does Creative Bridge offer its customers?

We design and create unique custom-made furniture, functional art, homeware and statement pieces. We often get asked to implement unusual requests, which keeps us on our toes!

What were your jobs previously and why the switch?

Fiona: I was a secondary school teacher, which I finished to give more time to my two boys. I began being creative with my laser cutter/engraver. Gian: I was a scaffolder and started making and selling small items from my garage - it grew from there.

We began some signage collaboration in 2021, which then turned into other bespoke pieces and Creative Bridge was born in Spring 2022.

Do you live locally?

Fiona: I live in Barry. Gian: I live in Penarth.

We both absolutely love where we live and feel so lucky and grateful for our coastal surroundings and the support of our family and friends.

What does Creative Bridge offer its customers?

A personal design and build experience - we like to get to know our customers and involve them in the creative process, such as choosing the raw materials, colours choices, design themes and functionality.

Where do customers come from geographically?

Most of our customers are from South Wales, but we supply lifestyle and homeware shops in other areas and have our unique furniture in homes as far away as Texas, USA.

Can you create bespoke pieces?

Custom orders are our specialityour shop on Vere Street acts like a showroom to give customers an idea of the various styles of timber and effects that can be achieved with resin.

Have you created a piece recently of which you are pleased with and proud of?

So many to choose from but the standout pieces so far include the yew and rainbow effect resin sliding door, a garden swimming pool bar and aurora dining tables at La Luna Restaurant in Talbot Green.

The dining tables we make are all completely unique - a lot of effort goes in to each one to ensure customer satisfaction. We have an emotional attachment to each one of them!

Tell us about your workshops. We have set up a studio workspace upstairs in our premises, which we use for small groups - this can also be hired out to other maker/crafters, but we can deliver workshops to larger groups at other premises, the largest group being a craft session with over fifty people simultaneously making and learning with us!

What do you love about what you do? We love the process of designing and making something unique …but the best part is the moment our customers see the final product.

Welcome to Vale Life Pets Corner. a celebration of our furry and feathered friends plus a few plugs for great local businesses.

We’re always meeting people who love their dogs, cats and weird and wonderful pets. We’ve even set up a group on Facebook (see below). So please feel free to join and share your shots of your beloved.

You can post pictures of your pet there: dogs, cats, birds, horses, hamsters, mice, spiders, ferrets, snakes, geckos - you name it, if it’s your pet, and you love them, feel free to join in. You can post images, share tips, make friends. There’s just one rule, be kind.

As always, if you do need anything for your pets, we urge you to choose indie businesses over the big chains and try to shop local. We have some excellent indie shops, groomers and vets in the Vale so there really isn’t any need to be supporting the big chains. If you spend your money with the small, local businesses, chances are that money gets re-spent in other small, local businesses.

RHOOSE VILLAGE

Posh Pawz Salon & Spa

Established in 2012, Posh Pawz Salon & Spa is situated in the heart of Rhoose Village in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The owners pride themselves in making your precious pooch looking and feeling great while helping maintain a glossy and healthy coat.

They have the added benefit of weighing scales in their reception area should anyone wish to pop in to record their dog’s weight.

Posh Pawz offer the successful EmmiPet Ultrasonic teeth cleaning system which produces great results. They also stock Plaque Off Powder supplement recommended by vets to help with tartar, plaque, and bad breath.

BARRY ISLAND

Marco’s Café:

Amiamo i cani!

Basically that means “We love dogs” and, to be fair, dogs love Marco’s! It’s a regular haunt for us and our Jack Russell. Roxy meets lots of friends there but it’s the other lovely owners that ply her with treats that ensure she makes a beeline to it.

This iconic shrine to good coffee is a must visit for lots of dog owners in spring and summer. You don’t have to own a dog though; you’ll be as welcome without. The clientele changes through the day. The early birds are there at the crack of dawn and it’s super popular with visitors from across the UK.

Owner Kath says, “We are in the process of moving over to everything environmentally friendly, including shampoos, conditioners, dog waste bags and much more.” Watch this space!

If you love to people watch, this is the place. The views are exceptional, and all life is here. No visit to Barry Island is complete without a photo in front of the Gavin & Stacey cast; as Ness would say, “We’re not gonna lie to you.” Marco’s Café on Barry Island was famous before the show - for great coffee, happy banter and appallingly bad jokes from owner Marco. Yes, this Italian/Welsh café is a true favourite with dog walkers all year ‘round.

The staff are brilliant, and it seems to attract a lovely group of customers. The Marco’s gang serve a superb range of reasonably priced coffees and beverages, paninis, pasties, pizza (obviously) and ice cream. And we mustn’t forget the cakes. Their cakes are “molto delizioso” as Marco would say.

There’s no better way to appreciate a company’s workmanship than by physically seeing the job for ourselves. So off we went to see the recent project that Ewenny Home Improvements carried out at the home of a client in Llandaff.

Elan (4) and their gorgeous thirteenyear-old spaniel Milo, moved to Llandaff in the summer of 2019. With a full house, they found it nigh on impossible to make their galley-style kitchen work, so got in touch with Ewenny Home Improvements to help.

What work did you have done by Ewenny Home Improvements?

Ewenny carried out all of the building work in our kitchen/diner extension, from knocking down the old utility area of the kitchen, laying the foundations of the extension, knocking through the old kitchen and the dining room, all brick work, digging up the old kitchen floor, and levelling the new floor, steel work, glazing, installation, plumbing and heating, electric and lighting, plastering and painting, and connecting all our kitchen appliances. They also arranged for all the rubbish, rubble and waste to be removed from our property… we filled a lot of skips!

galley style, with limited cooking space, old appliances and poor lighting, with no real family space. When we bought the house a few years ago, we always had the intension of extending and developing the back of the property to have a large open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area with bifolds leading onto the garden, for us as a family to spend quality time together, especially with our teenagers getting older and older. Mark is in the catering business, so loves cooking, and Elinor and Elan also really enjoy baking, so we always visioned a practical and beautiful space for us all to be together… and I’ve always dreamt of a large kitchen island!

Who came out to give the estimate? Andrew came to our property to discuss our ideas and vision, and having received the quote, we secured Ewenny as our builders/developers, and work commenced six months later.

away and prepped ready for Ewenny, and a great tip from a friend was to cover up all our internal doors with covers and zips, to limit the spread of dust and mortar - they worked well!

Andrew anticipated that the work would take around twelve weeks, and it completed a couple of weeks after that time as additional work had to take place which wasn’t originally scheduled.

We expected the work to be disruptive and dusty (which it was), and we set up our workspace/make-shift kitchen, chill out area in the lounge for the three months. But Ewenny workers were great and always tried to limit the disruption.

As there is no access at the rear of our property, all the materials and machinery had to come through the front door and through the house, which was tricky, but again the workers covered up the original tiled floor and skirting to try and avoid any damage.

T H O T H
8

Were the workers prompt, clean and tidy, reliable and trustworthy?

Yes, from Paul and Luke (the initial builders), through to the glaziers and decorators, they were all very considerate. They cleaned up at the end of every day and were all trustworthy - and they even ensured that the noise didn’t bother Mylo, our old dog, too much.

Did you have any input in the design of the job or were you guided by EHI?

Yes, we always ensured that we communicated with Ewenny and the workers on site with regard to our requirements and queries, which there were plenty of them during the development! Our architect Grace Allin, from Draw the Line Design, was great as well, and she supplied Ewenny with all the drawings.

How long did the process take from start to finish?

The first brick was knocked down at the end of March 2022, and the kitchen was totally finished by the July.

What difference has the work done to the way you now enjoy the space?

The new open plan kitchen has totally transformed the way we spend time together in our home. With us being a family of five, plus Mylo the dog, our new kitchen has allowed us to be in the same space together, be it during day-to-day dinner time, to opening the bifolds and enjoying the kitchen/patio/garden in the summer. We absolutely love opening the doors and having the light shine through into the space first thing in the morning, or in the evening with a gorgeous evening sunset, and lighting up the pizza oven!

We enjoy having our family over for birthday parties and friends over for drinks. We also love seeing the kids with their friends, just having fun and enjoying the space, it works really well for everyone, and Elan loves the extra space for her toys!

I know it’s a cliché that when people visualise a new space, they always think about ‘where will the Christmas tree go’! But it’s so true, and when Mark accidentally bought a ginormous tree last Christmas, it found it’s perfect place in our kitchen. All we need now is some more bright, dry sunny days to throw open the bifolds!

Would you be happy to recommend Ewenny Home Improvements to others?

Yes absolutely, and we have already recommended them on a few occasions.

If there was one special quality that stood out for you with regards EHI, what would that be?

The Ewenny workers. The team were always very approachable and listened to our requirements. They were friendly, and respectful that we were living in the house whilst the work was taking place. They were also happy to address any queries or issues, and completed the work to a high quality.

With three schools worldwide and more to come, Westbourne School is taking global education by storm.

WESTBOURNE SCHOOL

SHAPING THE EDUCATION FRONTIER

Westbourne School is changing the face of global education. The past year has seen the roll-out of its awardwinning model of academic excellence to Singapore and, in January 2024, Westbourne College Sydney topped the rankings for the second year running, placing 1st in Australia for the highest percentage of perfect IB scores (45 out of 45 Points).

Vale Life caught up with Stuart Ayres, Westbourne’s Digital Director hailing from our very own Cowbridge, to find out more about how the pioneering school is shaping the global education frontier.

What makes Westbourne stand out? With a longstanding reputation for topping the UK and, now, global education league tables for outstanding results, Westbourne’s formula for success is a simple one: nurture every child as an individual.

First things first, we’re a small, friendly school, with an average class size of only 15 pupils in the Prep School (age 4-10) and a 16-pupil class size average across the whole school (Reception to Sixth Form) - far smaller than at other schools. This means that our students receive more personalised attention, guided one-to-one by expert staff to better engage with the curriculum, as well as gaining the confidence to ask more questions and to think more

deeply. 90% of our graduates go on to study at the world’s top universities, including Oxbridge, the elite Russell Group and international equivalents.

This small school environment is coupled with an ambitious global approach, which really sets us apart. Using new technology to enrich the learning experience, we’re doing things that no other school in the world is doing right now. Our students are given the skills and experiences they need to make their mark globally.

I’ve been teaching for over twenty years, specialising in digital education technology, and have seen first-hand the transformative power of education. In a world where change is the only constant, it’s crucial that we prepare our students not just to adapt to this change but to be driving it. At Westbourne, we’re not just educating students; we’re nurturing future leaders, innovators and changemakers.

You’ve won a number of awards for innovation. Tell us more… We were delighted to win the Global EdTech Award in 2023, and we were also a Finalist for the Tes Schools Awards for Best Use of Technology for the second year in a row. For us, technology is not just a tool - it’s a gateway to limitless possibilities. We integrate the latest technological advancements into our teaching

methods, ensuring our teachers and students are adept at using these tools creatively and effectively. From AIassisted learning platforms to virtual reality experiences, our students are exposed to technologies that are shaping the future.

12
“This small school environment is coupled with an ambitious global approach, which really sets us apart.”
13

Students from our global schoolsfrom the UK to Singapore to Sydney, with more on the horizon! - access an innovative global classroom. Sharing knowledge and ideas via real-time virtual workshops and seminars, their study is led by subject specialists from different countries, meaning they gain access to the very best teachers globally. We have a number of exciting collaborative projects coming up this year.

How do you prepare students for the future?

At Westbourne, we believe that a global outlook is essential in today’s interconnected world. Our curriculum centres on academic excellence but is also designed to instil a deep understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and global issues. Through this international focus, our students learn to see the world through a broader lens, recognising their role as global citizens.

Proudly an IB-only Sixth Form, our students take the IB Diploma in their final two years of study - offering a rigorous curriculum considered the “gold standard” in education globally. Students not only gain first-class academic knowledge and skills, they also gain those soft skills that really set them apart in university applications - problemsolving, teamworking, communication - as well as a portfolio of community-focused work. The global mindedness encouraged by the IB is woven deeply throughout the whole school.

Tell us about Westbourne’s global network...

One of the unique aspects of Westbourne School is our network of sister schools spread across the globe, which empowers students to engage in cultural exchanges, collaborative projects and shared learning experiences. The relationships they build with their peers from different countries are not just academic in nature; they are bonds that often last a lifetime and span continents.

“At Westbourne we believe that a global outlook is essential in today’s interconnected world.”

Importantly, we encourage active collaboration, setting up meaningful opportunities for talented, like-minded students from our different schools to work together and problem solve as if they were in the same room.

We are proud to be nurturing the next generation of innovators in the fields of STEM and business. From economists and engineers, to architects, data scientists, software developers and astrophysicists, our students are at the forefront of shaping the future they want to see - and that’s so exciting.

What parents and students say...

“Westbourne has changed me for the better. The world-class teaching and encouragement I receive have improved my academic ability and given me opportunities to excel.”

Safia, student

“It’s about the smaller class sizes, the ability of the teachers to know each pupil and recognise what they’re capable of and push them just that little bit, in the nicest, kindest, most positive way.”

Parent

“It is a small, very friendly school. It’s somewhere you can believe that your children will have the best brought out in them. Not just academically, but emotionally, socially and physically.”

Parent

“The teacher-student relationship is profound, which ensures that no-one is left behind.”

Nikita Muir started out as a mobile hairdresser in 2010 but has evolved and grown her business into the stylish, boutique-style salon you see today.

A MORE HAIR BOUTIQUE

When did the new salon open?

We opened in Penarth in November 2023. Penarth is my hometown, I love it here.

What is your background in the industry?

I started my hairdressing career at sixteen when I left school, in a local hair salon where I qualified as a hairdresser (NVQ level 2 & 3). I then went self-employed at twenty-one and I set up my mobile hairdressing business. Progressing to renting a chair in a local beauty salon (Wax&Glo) for four years where I grew a team. I qualified as a make-up artist (NVQ level 3). During all this time I was a bridal hair specialist too. I have attended many courses such as hair up, advanced cutting, balayage, online make up courses.

What services do you offer?

Cutting, balayage, colouring, foiling, styling, Olaplex, blow dries, hair up and make-up. Also, hair and make-up for proms, special occasions, weddings.

What do you think you specialise in?

I definitely specialise in weddings –both hair and make-up.

What products do you use and why?

In the salon we use Maria Nila because not only are they fantastic, high performing and luxury products but we love what the brand represents. They’re vegan, animal friendly, eco-friendly and sustainable. They are a caring company - for their staff and consumers and have a wide range of products which are individual to the client’s hair type. We also use Olaplex which has been a very popular service since its launch in the UK. Very popular with clients in for a colour because of its protecting qualities to the hair.

How many staff do you employ and what are their roles and specialities? We have three members of staff excluding myself:

Courtney - Senior Stylist - specialises in all aspects of colouring and cutting.

Bella - Junior Stylist - recently qualified so is finding her feet, but thoroughly enjoys all aspects of hair, especially colouring and cutting short styles.

Lisa - Front of house manager/ receptionist - Lisa is in charge of welcoming clients, checking clients out, making/organising appointments, general business admin and assisting the management of the salon with Nikita.

What do you think makes Amore Hair Boutique special?

n Award winning

n Friendly atmosphere

n High standards

n Eco friendly with all of our practises.

We both live in Penarth and felt that here was a good place to start. Initially, (pre Covid) we did offer home services. However, due to our changing world we concentrated on offering services from rented rooms in Penarth, Cowbridge and Llantwit Fardre.

When this retail unit became available on Station Approach, we knew we were ready to take the jump to our own place. It is the perfect location with a free mini car park and felt that it was a little more discreet rather than the centre of town.

Are you clinically qualified?

We both have a Bachelor of Nursing degree with Honours (over ten years), as well as registered aesthetic practitioners (five years).

What services do you provide?

We personally offer aesthetics, skin care and wellbeing services. Such as dermal filler enhancements, medical grade skin care (Official Zo by Dr Obagi Skincare Stockists), vitamin injections and IV vitamin infusions, chemical peels, Microneedling and regenerative treatments such as polynucleotides and PRP vampire facials.

What do you believe makes your services unique?

We are both Registered Nurses and best friends (NHS colleagues who met nine years ago in our role as district nurses). We built a friendship and then decided to pursue our passion for a natural approach to aesthetics where we could help people feel their best and enhancing their natural beauty. We could never have anticipated that this would lead us to where we are now. We thought it would keep us going alongside our ‘main job at the time’ but we became extremely busy after Covid.

We believe we are the first actual premises for aesthetics in Penarth. We have two clinical treatment rooms, a relaxation room and a hair studio. We have been praised for the classy, yet clinical, clinic we have created.

“We personally offer aesthetics, skin care and wellbeing services.”

Do you believe your medical training has enhanced what you do?

Definitely. We offer in depth services together so that we can provide a high standard of service to our clients. We want our clients’ treatment to be as enjoyable and pain free as possible. We have had such amazing feedback on the way we do this and it’s what always stands out when people say they come back to us (that and our medical background).

How would you describe your patient relationships?

We are not afraid to say no. We offer an ethical and holistic approach and if we believe a client does not need a treatment or the treatment is not right for them, we will inform them. In this line of business there are so many unregulated practitioners who don’t see the client for who they are and just see the money.

We don’t believe in carrying out procedures unless we are satisfied our clients have made an informed decision, are certain they want the procedure, and we are certain that we can meet their expectations realistically. We are very transparent!

Keyif, the Turkish Mediterranean restaurant in Penarth, just outside Cardiff, has been recognised as a 2023/24 Good Food Gold Seal award winner.

K EYIF

AWARD WINNING TURKISH CUISINE

Here’s what the judges had to say: “Chosen for their food quality, service and value, our highly revered Gold Seal, is bestowed upon those achieving consistently high customer ratings/ votes over three years, making our Gold Seal a marque of distinction.”

This, of course, is no surprise to us at Vale Life. We’ve rated Keyif Five Stars for the last five years. We regularly eat there so can vouch for the quality of cooking, ingredients and service. It’s also, in our humble opinion, reasonably priced - even more reason to visit given the current squeeze on our pockets. At Keyif, you certainly get exceptional food at a fair price. What’s even more important about this award is that Keyif were unaware of it. Owner Mehmet said, “I didn’t even know we had been awarded it. It’s a complete surprise - a lovely one too. We feel very honoured. Perhaps a customer put us forward. Our customers are very good to us.”

Quality ingredients is what Keyif is all about. Mehmet and his talented team source only the be very best. “We do not compromise on quality,” says Mehmet. “These are tough times for hospitality businesses and the temptation is to cut corners. I will not do it. Perhaps this award is a recognition of the quality of our ingredients, cooking and service. I would like to think that the efforts we all make here are appreciated.”

Keyif is all about hospitality in the true sense of the word. There’s nothing more welcoming than a Turkish welcome. Keyif are passionate about making customers feel good. Mehmet is keen to stress that there is only one Keyif and it’s in Penarth. There are no other restaurants run by the team.

So it’s congratulations all ‘round. This recognition will hopefully encourage Penarthians, Cardiffians and many across the Vale to give this superb restaurant a try. You might love it as much as we do.

The Times recently named Penarth one of the best places to live in Wales. Surprising? Hardly. This fab seaside town has a whole lot to offer.

For a start, it has its own Times, Penarth Times, and the much-loved local newspaper, like us, has been championing this beautiful Victorian town for decades.

The east of the town, and Penarth Marina, nestle up to Cardiff Bay which means as a commuter town it is popular with those working in the city. It manages to be part of Cardiff and the Vale equally while enjoying excellent views over the Channel.

It has some excellent eateries too; cafés, restaurants and of course its very own Michelin Starred Home, owned and managed by the incredibly talented Sommerin family (if you haven’t eaten there, you really shouldit’s unbelievably good).

Penarth has a fantastic library too and a beautiful pier, not to mention the rather grand Pier pavilion which was restored in 2011. It’s got good sports and leisure facilities, and a pool!

PENARTH

In fact, Penarth’s got pretty much everything you need to enjoy life to the full. You could argue that locally you don’t really need a car, but then you couldn’t explore the rest of the Vale. But it does have two railway stations so the world, as they say, is your oyster.

If you enjoy shopping, then Penarth will delight you. There are several good boutiques, excellent salons, gorgeous gift shops and enough estate agents to sell you the dream. You’ll pay a price mind, a Penarth lifestyle does not come cheap but, as they are often heard saying (whoever they are), you get what you pay for in life and life is very good in Penarth, and it seems the Times agrees.

20

If Penarth has a jewel in its crown, it is Windsor Arcade. It’s beautiful and well worth a visit.

Inside its gorgeous façade, you’ll find a couple of good eateries, a traditional sweet shop, a gift shop, a very talented jeweller, a great sole trader (excuse the pun) in the form of Frangoulis (shoe repairs and much more), plus several excellent independent businesses and a great fruit and veg shop.

Windsor arcade is always bustling and, at its high street entrance, it is flanked by an excellent opticians and a great little book shop. What more could you want?

You’ll find on street parking nearby so no real excuse not to pop in and pay a visit. There’s certainly enough here to plan a visit for a few hours at least.

“You’ll find on street parking nearby so no real excuse not to pop in and pay a visit.”

Penarth Eye Centre has been offering excellent independent eye care since owner Becky took over the practice in the year 2000.

PENARTH EYE CENTRE

Many of the close-knit team have also been in post for eighteen years and they pride themselves on providing a high level of clinical service for all patients in a relaxed and friendly environment. “We like to provide a personal service,” says Becky.

Liz, Practice Manager, says, “Because we are an independent practice, we can offer patients a fantastic selection of frames to suit a range of budgets. Some of the brands Penarth Eye Centre stocks include Ray-Ban, Vogue, Fila, CAT, Stepper, Booth & Bruce, Eco, Ted Baker and Big & Tall, plus many more un-branded spectacles of superb quality.

Sustainability and best practice is at the heart of Penarth Eye Centre’s ethos. Becky says, “As a practice, we have many eco-friendly initiatives to try and reduce our environmental impact. Examples include switching to paperless patient files, sending digital reminders/ correspondence, recycling old spectacles and used contact lenses (after partnering with Terracycle and Acuvue).

And the team are justifiably proud of their achievements. Last year they were delighted to be awarded the Silver Award in The Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Award Scheme.

Our three permanent Optometrists have all undertaken post-graduate qualifications to enable high quality clinical care for all.

We look after both private and NHS patients and also provide an enhanced examination called an OCT scan, which lets us look at the health of your eyes in greater detail.

We like to provide a personal service and have got to know many of our patients and their families over the last two decades.

Feature In the Summer of 2023, The Roost on Rock Road was proudly handed over to Joanne and Andrew Wain to take it on the next leg of its journey, and what a journey it has been so far!

ROOST ON ROCK ROAD

The Roost has always been known as a culinary destination and with Chef Jorden Richardson now at its helm, the new menu caters to all those who appreciate great food in a contemporary setting. The Roost continues to work closely with local suppliers and is committed to sourcing local produce to work in tandem with the seasons, championing the best that Wales has to offer. We chatted with Joanne and Andrew to find out more.

Please tell us more about the food offering. What’s popular right now?

The Duo of Welsh Lamb is still a firm favourite for mains, followed very closely by the Winter Menu addition of Slow Roasted Belly Pork. The Mushroom Arancini with Garlic Aioli as a starter is ever popular too. Too many delicious desserts to choose from but the Rum & Raisin Bread & Butter

Pudding with Brown Sugar Ice-cream has proven to be a surefire hit with the customers. All foods are prepared and cooked fresh at The Roost. Sunday lunch, where booking is highly advised, is a must-try. We also cater for our younger patrons with their very own Little Rooster Menu.

“The

The Roost is spacious, but it feels quite intimate...

The restaurant can comfortably seat forty-two guests; however, we have catered much larger parties (over eighty), with the addition of a marquee. We also have a private dining/meeting room which can seat twelve, regularly used for intimate gatherings and by local companies as an effective meeting space. Our southfacing beer garden is a wonderful suntrap, ideal for whiling away a sunny afternoon with a large glass of something cold. During the summer months, you often can spot small herb pots used in many of our dishes.

Your dog friendly, we love that... The Roost is such a special place to be, often described as a “hidden gem”. The warm ambience, feature fireplaces, and overlaying skylight encompass the warmth of a traditional Welsh pub setting (even incorporating the original ‘4 Bells’ brass sign, which we have carefully embellished into one of our bar tables), with a contemporary twist. Even furry family members are welcome to join us in our dog-friendly bar area with (complete with dog treats!) real ales, vast wine and gin selections and a crowd-pleasing menu.

Roost continues to work closely with local suppliers and is committed to sourcing local produce to work in tandem with the seasons.”

What do you believe makes The Roost special?

What sets the Roost apart, we believe, are the people! From the front-of-house team, the Chef and his kitchen crew, and the housekeeping staff - each and everyone contributes so much to making The Roost such a wonderful welcoming Welsh pub in The Vale.

Our Roost motto is ‘When one shines, we all shine’, and that is evident in the reviews and returning clientele. Ultimately, it’s our customers that really bring The Roost to life.

We hear you also have rooms...

Yes, not only does The Roost have a thriving restaurant and busy bar, but we also have five ensuite bedrooms. A welcoming retreat with private access, ambient lighting and the little luxuries required for a restful stay. Combining elegance and style with creature comforts. Quality bed linen and luxurious bathrooms are some of the homely touches that we have incorporated. In true Roost style, each room is aptly named after local birdlife.

Anything new and exciting in the pipeline?

There are lots of exciting things happening in the coming months, from launching a Saturday Brunch Menu, to Steak Night Thursday and Live Music –subscribe to our newsletter to be kept informed or follow us on social media.

What customers say...

“We came across this place by accident on Saturday. What a great find. Had drinks by the fire and some food in the restaurant. Great food fantastic staff. We had a viewing of their rooms which were really impressive. Next time we will book accommodation for a weekend getaway.”

“A party of 5 others and I stayed here recently as we were attending a wedding in the area. We booked four rooms and not only was the price extremely reasonable, but the rooms themselves were gorgeous and felt very clean and welcoming. The coffee machine was a great addition! The most notable though were the amazing hosts, I’ve never been so well accommodated at any hotel before! I honestly can’t thank them enough for all their help in getting us wedding ready, and we’re already thinking of staying there again for a weekend away!”

“Me and my partner recently had the pleasure of staying at this fantastic establishment that seamlessly combines a bar, restaurant, and hotel, and we must say, it exceeded all our expectations!”

“The hotel rooms were an absolute delight - clean, comfortable, and imbued with a warm homely ambiance that made me feel right at ease. We stayed in Osprey. The amenities provided were top-notch, catering to every need and ensuring a truly comfortable stay.”

Cowbridge based Rhys Johns is passionate about his role as a barrister, providing legal advice for individuals and businesses across the Vale and beyond.

BARRAJ L EGAL

Like many people, Rhys has reassessed the quality of his life over recent years and has “changed a few things” for family and his clients’ benefit. Vale Life wanted to find out more.

What services do you offer your clients?

My team and I offer legal services to businesses. This can range from drafting legally compliant policies for websites, drafting partnership or shareholder agreements, to advising on contractual disputes. My services extend to all aspects of employment law, including disputes in the Employment Tribunal.

In addition to commercial cases, I also offer property law services to private clients. This can range from leases, to disputes over land, to drafting wills and trusts to protect assets. I deal with many disputes over wills and estates, and my expertise in front of a judge when things go wrong gives me an edge when drafting documents to ensure they are right, and head disputes off at the pass.

What experience/qualifications do you have in this area?

I am a qualified barrister who was called to the Bar in 2005. I work out of Chambers in London (33 Bedford Row) through which I am instructed by solicitors in the normal way and set up Barraj Legal to provide services direct to the public and businesses.

What would you say you specialise in? Property, commercial and employment law.

Why did you choose Cowbridge to set up your practice?

I live in Cowbridge with my young family. The year before the pandemic I spend 40,000 miles on the road travelling between courts for trials, which equates to about 900 hours. As court work begins to return to the physical court centres again, I wanted to focus my work away from London, because I can think of many things, I can spend those 900 hours doing other than sitting in a car on the M4.

What do you love about living and working in the Vale of Glamorgan? It’s a much more relaxed pace of life than the city. Everything I need is within a short distance, and people actually say hello in the street!

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy rugby and reading. I am currently completing preparatory work for a PhD in Intellectual History.

What do you think makes your customers want to work with you?

I am relaxed and personable, and don’t get overly stressed. But whilst I am naturally a relaxed person, I can be blunt and robust when situations call for it and clients always know I am on their side.

I am always more focused on solutions than dwelling on problems. I always a agree a route map with clients to get to where we want to be.

“Rhys is my first call when I have a tricky issue.”

TESTIMONIALS

What customers say...

Rhys is my first call when I have a tricky issue to deal with. I can always rely upon him to propose a workable and cost-effective solution to the most difficult of situations. Whether it is restructuring a company or shutting down a potential contract dispute, he always finds a workable way through it.

Gareth Milne, Swansea Legal Solutions

I have worked with Rhys for many years. He combines a brilliant grasp of the intellectual issues in a case with a relaxed and calm demeanour that really reassures clients. Whether it’s a High Court judge or a lay person with no legal knowledge at all, Rhys always knows what to say to make sure his explanation is understood.

Whatever your taste in food, the Vale has some of the best restaurants in Wales within the County. From Michelin Star dining to brilliant little cafés and bistros, you’re literally spoiled for choice.

There’s an amazing world of flavours just a phone call away - we do love a takeaway - but it’s nice to get out there and visit a local restaurant. We have our favourites but who do you rate five stars?

Where are your foodie favourites?

We’d love to hear about your favourite café, restaurant or bistro. Join us at www.facebook.com/valelife to share your best experiences.

FOOD & DRINK

PORTHKERRY PARK, BARRY Mrs Marco’s Café

We all need to get out more in the spring. When the sun is shining, there’s no better place than one of the Vale’s beautiful parks. Porthkerry Park is Barry’s hidden gem and also home to a fab little café: Mrs Marco’s.

A FOODIE FAVOURITE

Mr Villa’s on The Knap

From the moment you step through the doors at Mr. Villa’s on the Knap in Barry, you become part of the family. The cozy ambience, friendly staff, and personalised service make you feel right at home, making it the perfect place for catchups and celebrations.

If you haven’t paid a visit, then you’re in for a very pleasant surprise. Owned and run by Ruth (wife of Barry Island Marco) this brilliant compact and bijou oasis of calm is where you’ll find some of the best coffee, cakes and nibbles in the Vale. The perfect retreat when you’ve taken yourself for a good long walk.

Besides the gorgeous woodland and wide-open spaces, you can also access the beach here too. It’s one of our favourite places in the Vale, but don’t just take our word for it, just read what some of owner Ruth’s customers have to say on her Facebook page.

While you can’t take dogs inside the café, the outside spaces are certainly dog friendly and the whole park is very popular with dog owners.

Mr Villa’s is the kind of place where time slows down, and conversations flow freely over the shared joy of exceptional seafood (and meat, yes, they offer a fine selection).

They regularly post their current menus on their Facebook page, so please head on over there to find out more.

We all have our personal favourites cafés, restaurants in the Vale but for us, one little bistro shines very brightly indeed. It’s not flash, it’s not slick, but it does deliver great tasting food consistently.

A TASTE OF HOME COOKING

Hilary & Iain’s By The Sea is a cool little bistro overlooking the Bristol Channel in Ogmore-by-Sea. We’ve been going there since time began. In fact, we used to go to there before it was Hilary and Iain’s! It’s had several owners and incarnations over the years - it’s been a pizzeria, a café and a restaurant, and some of them were good.

Nowadays it’s run by a husband-and-wife team, Hilary and Iain, and quite frankly the food they turn out is pretty delish. If you’re looking for Sunday lunch, you’d be hard pressed to find better. Their lamb is astonishingly good - that’s Mark’s go-to. For Jack, our son, it’s usually roast beef but he has been enjoying lamb recently. I usually opt for a steak, and I like it rare, and rare is what Iain cooks up. I usually have a couple of poached or fried eggs on top, and the flavour is really good. The boys like their veg too and it’s always cooked perfectly. All topped off with, in my humble opinion, the very best proper gravy – it’s real home cooking at its best.

At this time of year, if you’re lucky, Hilary’s legendary desserts are on the specials blackboard. Sticky Toffee Pudding is a favourite. Honestly, you have to try it, with custard or ice cream, but we love the custard. Seriously, I run out of adjectives when it comes to their desserts.

As we’re talking about dessert, the Ogmore Eton Mess (strawberries, raspberries and blueberries) is incredible and if you love bread and butter pudding, again you’ll find Hilary’s hard to beat. Crispy banana fritters, fudge cake, Belgian waffles - they’re all good here. If you follow them on Facebook, there’s always a chocolate cake pic on there to salivate over. There goes the diet!

We must have eaten there at least fifty times - and not just Sunday lunch. Iain’s steaks are excellent. The lasagne is to die for. Jack says it’s the best he’s tasted, and he’s eaten enough of them to know. They do a wicked cawl - very popular at this time of year and if you fancy a great fish and chips takeaway, then Hilary & Iain’s do that too.

I think the thing we love the most is it’s unpretentious. So many places put style above substance and fail to deliver on flavour. If I had to describe Hilary and Iain’s food to anyone it would be just great home cooking. It’s relaxed there; locals come and go, families having lunch, cyclists will turn up and have a brunch outside in the spring and summer. It’s a great little pitstop for people visiting the local beaches - they are among some of the most beautiful in the Vale and the view from there isn’t too shabby, especially in the summer months.

Hilary & Iain’s is just a good vibe. Every so often they put on a music night with food. Musicians drop in for a jam - all very relaxed, but they sell out quickly so make sure you check out their Facebook page to keep up with the latest menus and events.

So if you’re looking for “feel good food”, give them a try. The prices are very reasonable and, once you’ve eaten there, like a lot of their fans, we’re confident you’ll return.

Here at Vale Life we have great empathy for farmers and appreciate the farm-to-fork ethos, and that passion is nowhere more evident than at Glenn Griffith Quality Butcher & Deli.

M EET T HE T EAM

DELI

Charl

Deli staffer and barista, Charl, is Mark’s granddaughter and Glenn’s niece. This is certainly a family business and Charl ensures the smooth running of the deli - serving customers, taking orders and making coffee but her favourite part of her role is tasting and product testing. “Someone has to taste test everything,” she says. “It’s a really tough job. Lol.”

What do you like or love about your job/role?

I enjoy having a laugh and a joke with customers. It’s great to catch up with them. The staff here are great – also tasting and testing new menu items. Did I mention that?

Where do you live?

Barry.

Favourite meat or deli product?

I love steak, and cakes from the deli!

Glenn Griffith

Glenn is head honcho and business owner. He says, “It never fails to amaze me how our little shop that’s off the beaten track keeps going from strength to strength.”

The truth is Glenn is the driving force and, like his dad Mark, is passionate about quality. Ultimately, he’s the reason this business is growing - it’s a quality business with old-school values and he’s hiring great people, delivering a superb

DELI

Samantha

Sam has worked in the hospitality industry for over twenty years. “I trained as a chef and barista,” she says. “I’d like to think I know a bit about food, drink and people!” Sam is an accomplished barista and those tasty hand-made, scrummy baguettes that we all love so much, well, they’ll be down to Sam. Her coffee’s pretty good too.

What do you like or love about your job/role?

The people I work with. Everyone has been so lovely and welcomed me into the Griffith family. Having moved to the area fairly recently, it’s been great getting to know the locals and gain local knowledge.

Where do you live?

Here in Dinas Powys.

Favourite meat or deli product?

Our sliced ham. It’s lovely on its own or in a baguette with coleslaw. Yummy!

product and offering excellent service to their loyal customers.

What do you like or love about your job/role?

The daily challenges. No two days are the same. The staff are not too bad either.

Where do you live?

Rhoose. It’s quiet and coastal. I like that.

Favourite meat or deli product?

Our traditional pork sausages, and chicken tikka baguettes.

DELI & BUTCHER

Jane White

We asked Jane what her role is and she humbly replied, “Just a sausage maker”. If you’ve ever eaten a sausage made at Glenn Griffith, you’ll know that Jane is probably under-selling herself. The pork sausages here are next level. We eat them all the time.

They’re also the sausages available at Whitmore & Jackson on Barry Island. So, you can try them there and not even have to cook them yourself!

What do you like or love about your job/role?

Being in a friendly workplace. Having a good boss.

Where do you live?

Dinas Powys. It’s a great village.

Favourite meat or deli product?

I love lamb. I love our cakes too!

DELI & BUTCHER
36

Over the years we must have bought meat from literally every butcher in the Vale. In Dinas Powys, there is one name that stands out and that’s Glenn Griffith. But, as Glenn will always tell you, “It’s a team effort!” And what a team he’s put together, so in this spring issue, Glenn thought it might be a nice idea to introduce some of the staff to the wider Vale community.

In Dinas, they’re part of the furniture. This amazing butcher and deli is a hub in its own right. Locals pop in for their meat, some nip in the deli for a coffee and a bit of cake. Their baguettes are extremely popular too and when Friday comes around, you know it’s specials day at the deli because there’s a constant stream of customers. Our favourite special is the beef and gravy. OMG, it’s divine. Another weekly staple

BUTCHER

John McDonnell

John has worked as a butcher in The Vale of Glamorgan for almost thirty years. Mostly in Penarth, but now he says he feels very settled with Glenn Griffith Butchers and Deli. “It just feels right here,” he says. “I love it!” When you walk into Glenn Griffith and you see the amazing counters full of beautiful readyto-cook products, chances are it’s John who has prepared them. They say we eat with our eyes. And these certainly are a feast for the soul.

What do you like or love about your job/role?

Working in a friendly atmosphere for a great family. Serving the community of Dinas Powys and the Vale.

Where do you live? Penarth.

Favourite meat or deli product? Rib-eye steak. Double egg bap from the deli.

is the bacon with baconnaise.

If you’re on a diet, mmm, these probably aren’t going to help. They are utterly delicious.

The deli...

You’ll find all your deli favourites here: pasta, sauces, condiments, oils - you name it, they have it. But it’s the counter that attracts the locals. Scrummy sandwiches, rolls and baguettes with gorgeous fillings plus immensely good coffee. The sausage rolls here are next level, and the cakes? OMG.

The butchers...

Glenn and his team pride themselves on the excellence of their products: beef, pork, lamb, chicken - it’s all here. Plus, an eye-catching selection of ready-to-cook specials.

BUTCHER

Mark Griffith

Mark’s the patriarch and loves his job. There’s no question of retirement. Mark couldn’t imagine not being here at the butchers. “I really like the people I work with, both in the deli and butchers, and all our customers. It’s not work if you love what you do is it?” His product knowledge and skills are the backbone of the business, and the customers love his banter.

What do you like or love about your job/role?

Serving customers and chatting with the local community. I really enjoy the butchery side - I’m a stickler for quality.

Where do you live? Barry.

Favourite meat or deli product? Chicken and turkey. Salad baps from the deli.

If there’s a particular meat product you fancy, they can order it. We love ox tail and shin beef, and their chicken livers are especially good (we have them shallow fried with bacon and cream). They can order fish too, often for next day collection. Don’t be afraid to ask.

BUTCHER

Craig Trudgian

Craig has been at Glenn Griffith for several years and is key member of the team. Craig lives a good thirty minutes away but says, “I feel very welcome in Dinas Powys.

There’s a great community spirit here and the residents obviously love the butchers.

There’s such a friendly atmosphere. It just makes working here a lot more enjoyable.”

What do you like or love about your job/role?

Great customer relations in a family-run business

Where do you live? Bridgend.

Favourite meat or deli product? Slow roasted rib of beef, and ham salad rolls.

This great café in prime position overlooking Whitmore Bay on Barry Island is gaining a real following. No surprise really given the quality of its offering.

WHITMORE & JACKSON

WHERE QUALITY COMES FIRST

Named after two of Barry Island’s most popular bays, Whitmore & Jackson is one of the Island’s go to cafés for a bite and a cuppa after a walk on the beach.

It’s a great place to sit outside in spring and summer as this cool eatery enjoys great views of the Bristol Channel and Devon beyond.

It’s popular with a wide variety of customers from ladies meeting for a cuppa to tradespeople looking for a breakfast of brunch. Dog walkers are regulars plus cyclists stopping by for a bacon roll. It’s currently rated in the top 5% of places to eat in Barry out of well over 300 with over 670 Google reviews. No surprise really as at its core is a high-quality food offering complemented by great service.

Owned and managed by Glenn Griffith of the much-loved family butcher in Dinas Powys. Glenn is passionate about ensuring that diners enjoy the very best produce. “We use great sausages, bacon, and eggs and our kitchen team are brilliant cooks. Combine that with our lovely front-of-house team and customers can be assured that they will always receive the very best food and a warm welcome,” he says.

“Dogs are also welcome here which we love and there’s usually a furry friend nestled under a table.”

We’ve eaten there regularly ourselves and can confirm that their breakfast, and anything breakfast related, is superb. Another favourite is the beef stew, along with the lamb cawl. Both are excellent. My parents visited recently, and dad loves the big breakfast while mum loves their paninis. For a light lunch or snack, you cannot beat the poached eggs on sourdough. I ask for them runny and they’re always perfect.

Dogs are also welcome here which we love and there’s usually a furry friend nestled under a table. There’s also a well-stocked bookcase if you fancy a read while enjoying a cuppa and a piece of their wonderful selection of home-made cakes. There’s a regular soup of the day and the menu has plenty of options available. The real takeaway is the quality though. The food is simply excellent. Great tasting, well prepared and reasonably priced. It’s the perfect café in our humble opinion - no wonder it’s busy.

You may have heard the term ‘digital currency’ but do you really know what it means to society?

K EEP CASH A LIVE

You’ve probably experienced your local bank branch closing its doors. “Everything is online now!” they say. Don’t believe a word of it, it’s not, but they want it to be. It’s simply because it’s more profitable.

You’ll see this same process in supermarkets - card only tills and the removal of staff in favour of selfservice. It’s happening and it’s not good news. But you can stop it. Refuse self-service for a start. Ask to be served by a person - insist on it.

Imagine for a moment you pay someone £50 in cash. That cash by the time it’s been through dozens of transactions will still be worth £50. Pay by card or smartphone app and each time that transaction happens, a small fee is deducted along with a small transaction percentage. It’s not long before that £50 is worth nothing, because the banks, through their charges, have chipped away at it until there’s literally nothing left.

If you pay in cash, it instantly helps small businesses. But how?

n Businesses save money instantly on transaction fees.

n They have more control over their profits.

n If you can help save that business money, they are more likely to keep staff employed and give back to their local community.

n Small to medium business are an integral part of keeping your local economy and community thriving and growing.

Cash protects you from being at the mercy of electronic forms of payments during power outages and looming high energy costs. Here’s an example: We were down in Tenby in Pembrokeshire before Christmas and the local power went down. Many of the businesses accepted card or smartphone payments only, so for at least an hour they couldn’t do any business whatsoever, even when we offered them cash!

The dark side of digital...

The more sinister side of all this is control and abuse of power. If you’re digital, “they” can turn you off (your payment method, your energy supplier’s smart meter, even your car!). In China right now facial recognition and social credits are the order of the day. Step out of line and you’re literally turned off. You can’t travel, you can’t shop, you can’t live. That’s doesn’t sound like much of a life to me. So if you don’t want that kind of miserable existence here in Wales, perhaps it’s time to make a few changes and a few affirmations.

POSITIVE ACTION

You have the power!

n Support businesses that employ local people

n Buy from independent businesses

n Use cash at every opportunity

n Avoid self-service tills

n Pay bills in cash at every opportunity

n Switch from a bank to a building society (look for the ones opening high street branches not closing them).

CHOOSING A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

SIX THINGS TO CONSIDER

Understandably, newborn photography is one of the fastest-growing genres in the photography industry. Barry based Photographer Sian Lewis gives us her top tips for choosing the right photographer for you.

You only have to ask for a recommendation on Facebook to see just how many newborn photographers are out there. As with most industries, there is a broad spectrum when it comes to both quality and pricing. So how do you go about finding the right newborn photographer for you? Here’s Sian’s handy guide to finding the perfect photographer for your new baby.

Safety

This is the most important one of all! Does the photographer work safely? Many of the images you see will be composites, i.e. photos made up from more than one image that are cleverly combined in post-production to make it look like one image. If a baby is placed in a prop, such as a bucket or a basket, there should be a spotter next to the baby at all times. Your baby should be safe and secure at all times.

Style

Take a look at the photographer’s portfolio to see the kind of images they produce. All photographers have a different style so pick someone who produces work that you love.

Insurance

This is a huge point! Please don’t ever hand your baby over to a photographer who isn’t insured.

Training

Has the photographer undertaken training in the art of newborn photography? Adequate training is vitally important for all newborn photographers.

Posing

How are the babies posed and positioned? Do they look comfortable? If a baby’s arms or head are resting on the edge of the prop, there should be plenty of padding. Are their arms and legs inside the prop? Having arms or legs overhanging can be uncomfortable and leave the baby unbalanced and certain positions can affect their circulation.

Qualifications

Does your photographer hold a qualification in newborn photography? A qualification from a professional body demonstrates that the photographer is working at a professional standard.

Pricing

The old adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true for the most part (a bargain is only a bargain if you get a useable product). The price a photographer charges will be a reflection of their skill level; if you want a fully trained, experienced photographer, you can expect to pay a decent amount.

The long and the short of it is this, choose a photographer who will safely capture beautiful images of your baby that you’re going to cherish forever.

For this edition of the lab report

Arthur (official Labrador at Vale Solicitors) paws over to his pack leader Alphie.

T HE L AB R EPORT

DON’T LET THE OLD MAN IN!

In dog years Alphie is now the same age as Michael Morgan, Managing Director of Vale Solicitors. They are both approaching retirement age but neither has any intention of slowing down.

“I am a Jack Russell - slowing down is not in my vocabulary,” says Alphie. “I live life at 100 miles an hour!”

Michael follows the advice of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood. Clint, still working in his 90s, famously said: “Every day when I wake up, I don’t let the old man in. You have to stay active, alive, happy, strong, and capable. We are young, regardless of our ID. We must learn to fight to not let the old man in.”

“I am not the same age as Clint - yet,” says Michael. “My contemporaries are Madonna, Donny Osmond and Lenny Henry and we are all still going strong. After forty years as a solicitor in the

Vale I still enjoy meeting new clients and looking after those who have been loyal to me throughout my career.”

Alphie continues: “Even if you are not letting the old man in it is still important to get your affairs in order and plan for the future.

Wills and Powers of Attorney are very important. Everyone should have Powers of Attorneys in place so that the people you trust can make decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. This includes everything from paying everyday bills to making arrangements for care.

Wills are important whatever your age. If you are catching up with Clint Eastwood you may be concerned about Inheritance Tax, care home fees or simply making sure that your assets pass to the right people.

If you are younger, with children under eighteen, you should make sure that the right provisions are in place to look after assets for them and to appoint the right legal guardians.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, and it is important to consider and plan for the future. At Vale Solicitors we take time to discuss your individual requirements and always meet our clients face-toface whether at our offices or in their own homes. In most circumstances we can finalise your wills and powers of attorney ready for signature at one meeting.

We don’t run up expensive bills at an hourly rate - we assess your requirements and then give you a fixed fee which we stick to.”

If you would like to discuss your future planning, Michael will be pleased to hear from you. Michael quotes Clint Eastwood again, “Go ahead, make my day.”

“Every day when I wake up, I don’t let the old man in.”

With great transport links, and it being nestled between Cowbridge, Talbot Green and Llantrisant, Pontyclun is certainly becoming one of the most desirable places to live on the Vale/ RCT border and although generally considered affordable, house prices are certainly on the rise.

Pontyclun translated from Welsh, means ‘bridge over the River Clun’ and has been in official use since 1893. Prior to that it was called Pont y Clown (Clouneor Clune). The Clun is a tributary of the River Ely. Until 1850 this was an area of tranquil farmland with just a few farmhouses. How things have changed.

Today, Pontyclun’s bustling main street is one of the most vibrant in the area. With its shops, cafés, butcher, pubs, deli, gallery, and various eateries, you’d be forgiven for thinking this cool town has it all.

Athena Hair Studio (formerly known as Scissors) moved to its new home in Pontyclun last December and look forward to welcoming existing and new clients for a “hair salon experience like no other”.

ATHENA H AIR STUDIO, PONTYCLUN

A new venue called for a new look, so Athena was born. Given that Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom and craftwork, it seems appropriate!

The creative team consist of owner Becky, Nicola Williams, Natalie Davies, (all senior stylists), Ffion Price (junior stylist) and Abbie Roderick (trainee).

Offering all aspects of hairdressing, the girls regularly keep up with the trends with in-house colour training through their preferred products brand, Alfaparf. Why do they love this brand? Alfaparf Milano Precious Nature is vegan, and free from ammonia, PPD and resorcinol, and is gentle on the hair and one that Becky says most sensitive clients don’t react to.

Athena offers gift vouchers and, if you keep an eye on their Facebook page, you can learn about their regular offers and events.

It’s early days, but Becky has big plans afoot for how she and her team want the salon to look, so watch this space!

“Seven years in, bathrooms remain our passion very much and we are constantly looking for inspiration and new ideas to show our clients which keep things fresh and innovative,” says owner Justine Bullock.

We caught up with the talented team, at their beautiful showroom to find out more.

“We are not the filler of the bathroom industry; we are the full-face lift!.”

We’ve been following you on LinkedIn and socials. You’ve produced some stunning designs over the last year. We specialise in creating spaces that are better both aesthetically and functionally than our clients would have been able to achieve going it alone. We have a particular love for small space design and even in the smallest of rooms we have been successful in making big changes. A recent project for social media influencer Charlotte Greedy saw us change her downstairs cloakroom, that comprised of just a WC and basin, into a luxurious shower room without increasing the size of the room at all!

It must be really satisfying when clients tell you that you’ve have not only transformed their bathrooms but their lives as well!

We are best suited to clients who seek a big transformation. When we undertake a bathroom renovation, we can provide a recommended fitter or an employed fitter so that the client doesn’t have to source a fitter themselves. All our fitters are bathroom fitter rather than individual trades, so they manage the project from start to finish to ensure a good finish and result.

Would you suggest that prospective clients look at your socials for ideas before talking to you?

Absolutely, you can check out our work on our social media channels, we update our Instagram regularly and love to showcase our completed projects.

What are the trends for the next few years?

Some of the key bathroom trends for 2024 are adding texture and contrast to neutral schemes; wood and wooden effect elements do this perfectly as this they are often textured so tactile to touch and available in darker hues. Burgundy and red are hot colours for adding a pop of colour thanks to social media and the unexpected red theory colour trend; We would recommend darker, deeper versions of this colour and stay away from feature walls, these kinds of colours look better in furniture pieces and décor rather than on mass. Green is also a top requested colour at the moment; This is a great addition to any bathroom, and it doesn’t have to be in fixed products, you could introduce green into any bathroom, ensuite or cloakroom simply by adding plants and greenery, bringing the outside in!

What customers say

Huge thank you to Justine and the team at The Tap End. They made the high-end hotel style en-suite I always dreamt of a reality. From start to finish it was easy from our point of view because of the hard work behind the scenes by the team.

Mr & Mrs Wheeler, Margam

Truly delighted with my beautiful bathroom! The Tap End provided me with exceptional service from start to finish, providing me with detailed designs and products that reflected all of my needs and aesthetic taste. Daniella listened carefully to my vision and was able to bring it to life effortlessly. She was attentive and went the extra mile throughout the whole process. I am very grateful for her talent and high quality of customer care. Thank you Daniella and The Tap End.

Miss O’Doherty, London

A stunning transformation designed by Joanna at Tap End for our odd shaped en-suite. The attention to detail and her vision on taking us away from just a standard refit to a luxury bathroom was amazing. From start to finish they managed the whole process from the mood board and CAD designs at the start to suggestions on colours and what fixtures and fitting would look best. Working with Joanna and the ladies was a pleasure and for their fitter Mark who did an incredible job of making the plans coming to life. Would highly recommend Tap End for their very high-quality workmanship and professional approach.

Our Cruise Department has seen phenomenal growth! We often offer Exclusive Cruise Offers. These are two of my personal favourites with Celebrity Cruises.

When it comes to great adventures in this magical archipelago, Celebrity Cruises are seasoned travellers. For years, they’ve created the most memorable all-inclusive holiday experiences. There simply is no one more devoted to this precious corner of the world or better prepared to share it with you.

Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, this archipelago of unspoiled, isolated islands will welcome you with its rugged charms and evolutionary wonders. Consisting of 19 islands and 42 islets that all rose from the sea as the product of volcanic eruptions, these islands are between 1 million and 4 million years old. Completely oceanic, meaning they’ve never been connected to the mainland, the Galapagos Islands are truly a world apart.

The history of the Galapagos is rich and diverse, with tales of basic survival and extraordinary discovery. For almost any modern explorer, a journey through time to the Galapagos is a dream holiday.

E ASTERN PROMISE

THE FAR EAST HAS NEVER BEEN SO CLOSE

We caught up with Suzanne between trips in an audacious attempt to gain some inside knowledge. Unsurprisingly, she was very forthcoming, so we asked her where are the best places to go this spring/ summer season.

Where would you suggest for:

A single person?

Cruise, or tour with other singlessomething we specialise in.

A romantic getaway?

The Arctic - in a glass igloo!

A family? Two plus two?

Ikos Hotels – unbeatable.

A retired couple?

Definitely a river cruise.

Where have you been in recent months which blew you away and why?

Langkawi, Malaysia and Singapore. Absolutely stunning. A multi-centre holiday allows you to pack so much in and make the best of your time in an incredible part of the world.

What enticed you there?

A Cardiff flight was a huge bonus, plus thirty-four degrees in December when it was raining cats and dogs back in Blighty. Flying business class with KLM from Cardiff Wales Airport was so convenient! From dropping off the car in the meet and greet zone to clearing security and being sat with a glass of bubbles in the Executive Lounge took only twenty minutes - just wow!

Share your favourite hotel stays there? We stayed at the Ritz Carlton, Langkawi and The Mondrian Singapore - both were sensational! I also love the Dati or Pelanghi Beach.

Where was your favourite place to shop and why?

Kuala Lumpur was incredible value,we stayed there for a few nights before heading down to Langkawi – I recommend you take an empty suitcase!

Where would you suggest to play?

Your favourite hot spot for people watching, catching the best sunset, where served the best cocktail?

Oh, that’s easy. A Sunset Cocktail in the Horizon Bar literally took my breath away.

What about food? Which restaurant rocked your world?

Southeast Asia is food heaven. We loved the satay and chargrilled salads for lunch. Hoi Ann Restaurant blew us away - authentic Asian. Saying that, the “street food” in Singapore was also incredible, and such great value.

Was there a bar that had it all? Drinks, views, ambience?

The rooftop bar of our hotel at the Mondrian. Incredible views over the skylines, and sensational sunsets.

What was the local dish that you loved or loathed?

I was not a fan of the char-grilled scorpions on a stick!

For the culture vultures, please name your must-see attractions. Any tips on how to avoid the crowds/queues? Langkawi is so beautiful, when you fly in it’s just like Jurassic Park - stunning scenery, world class beaches. My top tip is to hire a car to explore - it’s so interesting and safe! A must do trip, is a mangrove boat tour, the wildlife you will see is just magnificent. You must also visit Raffles for a Singapore Sling!

Did you find a beach that was a hidden gem?

Tanjung Rhu in Langkawi was jaw droppingly beautiful. Powder white sands, turquoise ocean and dramatic green pitons all around.

SUZANNE CUMPSTON

Quickfire Q&A

Lounging by the pool or soaking up the waves by the sea?

I’m a beach bum at heart - so the sea every time.

Immersing yourself in local culture or indulging in a shopping spree? I honestly can’t choose. Both!

What’s your go-to accessory for exploring new destinations: a stylish hat or a comfortable pair of walking shoes? Both are a must. Teva shoes for walking and a stylish Panama hat for protection and posing.

Do you prefer discovering hidden gems off the beaten path or visiting popular tourist attractions? As an adventurer, definitely off the beaten path.

Are you more inclined to sample authentic local cuisine or seek out familiar international dishes?

Being a true foodie, I love to eat locally and authentically. Asian food is delicious!

Boutique hotel, international chain, villa or agriturismo?

All the above but it really depends which location we’re heading for. My all-time favourite was a classy little boutique hotel. However, sometimes (actually often!), I am in the mood for five-star luxury. Perks of the job!

WATERFALL COUNTRY ESCAPE

EXPLORE THE BRECON BEACONS

This exceptional venue has been transformed by the incredibly talented Nicky Bright from a loss-making pub to a supremely desirable holiday venue; perfect for group bookings - think family engagement parties, weddings, birthday celebrations, girlie getaways or lads weekends - it’s perfect for large groups.

Imagine waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon, as you prepare for a day of exploration or just chilling out. With top-of-the-line appliances and ample space, the kitchen is a focal point for bonding over shared meals.

Adjacent to the kitchen lies a bar. All you have to do is bring your own “refreshments” so you’ll have your very own bar for the duration without paying their prices! During the evening, the lounge with its cosy furnishings and warm ambience is the perfect place to catch up and socialise. Sink into plush sofas beside a crackling fireplace, as you recount the day’s adventures or plan tomorrow’s escapades.

With board games and books, the lounge is the hub of this amazing venue. Nicky has created the prefect setting to unwind and create great memories.

Beyond the comforts of home there are a host of outdoor activities to be experienced, whether it’s exploring the natural wonders of Bannau Brycheiniog or heading south to coast. You’re in the heart of Wales so panoramic vistas of rolling hills and cascading waterfalls are aplenty. For thrill-seekers, local mountain biking trails provide an adrenaline-fueled experience amidst breathtaking scenery.

If aquatic, adrenaline filled adventures are your thing, you can venture to nearby lakes and rivers, where kayaking, fishing, and wild swimming await. Or you can take a more leisurely pace; picnics by the water’s edge and just enjoying the calming serenity of the great outdoors.

When evening comes, and night falls, you’ll be able to share your escapades with your friends or family under a star-studded sky, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

If, ten years ago, you’d have asked us if we’d consider staying in or buying a holiday home (static caravan for want of a better phrase), the answer would have been an emphatic no.

PEARL L AKE

A REAL GEM COUNTRY PARK

We both had reasonable reasons; Jennifer had spent a deeply unpleasant six months in one as a child - so not great memories and I, well we, recall a particularly horrible experience in Cornwall renting one with our baby son. Let’s just say we left within one hour of arriving and we’ve never stayed in one since.

Recently we were chatting to some friends, and they were extolling the virtues of caravan, or static, life. One family had spent many joyous spring and summer months of the last several years in France and had enjoyed exceptional holidays. Another family regularly escape to West Wales and couldn’t be happier with their purchase.

It got us thinking, so when the opportunity to stay in one for a few nights presented itself, we thought this might be the time to revisit and see if it really is something we might consider in the future. We were warming to the idea and there was only one way to find out.

We’d heard good things about Pearl Lake Country Park in Shobdon, North Herefordshire. We’ve always really liked this part of the country. The border area between Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire is a particularly beautiful part of the UK.

Pearl Lake attracted us also because of its proximity to water. Living on the coast in The Vale of Glamorgan, we love being by the sea and, when

we’re inland, we do like to be beside a lake, river or stream. Pearl Lake is glacial and ten thousand years old. In fact, it’s the largest natural lake in Herefordshire and is complemented by another smaller water feature on the park known as Pearl Pool. This seemed a good omen.

Finding the park is relatively easy with satnav but we did notice it dropped out occasionally. Mobile signal is pretty bad in this neck of the woods so if you need constant contact with the outside world, you may like to consider another location. Having said that, if you really want to disappear, this is the place. What Herefordshire, Worcestershire and good old Shropshire lack in 5G, they more than make up for in other areaswe’ll come to those later.

62

Pearl Lake claims to be five star. That’s a pretty bold claim and, honestly, they can back it up quite confidently. It is immaculate. The grounds and lake are beautiful. We were a little worried about finding our accommodation, but it was really no problem – their helpful staff gave us really good directions and we found it in minutes despite it being early evening when we arrived with the light going.

Talking about location of the holiday homes, Pearl Lake has consciously positioned them, so they are offset to maximise everyone’s views. Ours, as we were to discover in the morning, looked out on green fields and a golf course with the lake being a twominute walk away - what a great view.

63
“We’ve never been a fan of caravans. Until now.”

As a base, Pearl Lake is perfect. You’re in a beautiful part of the countryside. The Borders, I would argue, is amongst the best in the UK. It is pretty stunning. There are some great villages, market towns and cities within easy drive too so you can enjoy the best of both worlds and if you own a small plane or helicopter, Shobdon airfield is a mere five minutes away. Once you’ve landed and made your way to your caravan, you can prepare yourself a meal if you wish. The facilities are excellent - as you’d expect. The interiors are stylish, beautifully well-equipped and basically designed to be a home from home.

So here we are on the Borders, and if there’s one thing they do particularly well in this area it’s food. This is farming country and if you walk into any independent butcher, chances are you’re going to leave with some excellent beef, pork or lamb. But who really wants to cook when they’re away? I certainly don’t. On site, The Lakeside Bar & Bistro is just two minutes from the holiday home and is a great attraction and asset to the park, offering a wide range of cuisine and some great local beers and ciders. There are also regular events and music going on there throughout the season.

A ten-minute walk away, just down the road, is a rather excellent establishment called The Bateman Arms. Sadly, it was fully booked so we opted for The Corners Inn in Kingsland. Not sure why it’s called that - perhaps it’s because it’s on a corner. What I do love about this place is The Corners Mixed Grill. And what a mixed grill. If you’re in the area, you must try it, assuming you’re not veggie (sometimes as they say life choices suck). There’s much more on the menu but we only had eyes for the meat fest and it is seriously good.

After a great meal the night before, we woke to a beautiful morning and decided we would explore some of the towns and villages of the area.

First stop, Tenbury Wells, a super cute, ancient market town on the northwest edge of the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire. A river does run through it and it’s the Teme (Teme Valley). The parish is home to just over 5,200 souls and we really liked it. It’s cultural claim to fame is holly and mistletoe production. It has an equally cute, compact and bijou round market which, I believe, is open Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays but do check. Darth Vader sells eggs there – honestly. The town has an excellent confectioner (sweet shop), a brilliant butcher and a superb deli with an incredible selection of cheeses (and yes, we had to try some). They also have a brilliant TIC (Tourist Information Centre) and the lady there was so helpful and enthusiastic. It was clear to us she loved the area. Well worth popping in because there are always things happening, especially in the spring/ summer months, and the TIC keep on top of what’s going on.

Next stop, Bromyard, a town in the parish of Bromyard and Winslow. We’re in darkest Herefordshire here in the valley of the river Frome (sounded a bit Lord Of The Rings that – Bromyard, east of Mordor). I digress. It is near the county border with Worcestershire on the A44 between Leominster and Worcester. They’re an active lot in Bromyard with over a hundred clubs catering for all interests. You can find out more on the excellent www.visitbromyard.org.uk.

Bromyard has some real gems. If you’re into your fashion and love an indie boutique, then Suz Ladies Fashions is a must. The owner is a lovely lady and has an excellent eye - everything was on trend, and she is the perfect host, very knowledgeable and helpful.

The Cosy Café serves up a very decent bacon roll and exceptionally good coffee and home-made cakes (we can certainly endorse). The owner had recently been to Cardiff (St David’s 2) Christmas shopping but hadn’t explored the Victorian arcades! Seriously, if you’re in Cardiff, the old arcades are a must - they are packed with indie gems.

Near the carpark, you’ll find Bromyard Heritage Centre – what a find. It has a great gallery with some exceptional works displayed. We particularly liked Heather Sweet-Moon’s quirky ceramics. While we were there, they were just finishing up a community art class. The tutor was an extremely talented gentleman and some of the students’ works are quite exceptional. Clearly Bromyard has a lot to offer residents and visitors alike.

Leominster is just over twenty minutes away by car, so it seemed rude not to grace it with our presence. We’ve visited a while ago but had forgotten what a delightful market town it is. If we had to sum it up, Leominster is the antiques and collectibles capital of the UK. Some might argue but we love its quirky buildings and every other one seems to be an antique shop. Leominster Antique Centre is a great example. Four floors of browsing heaven. Just along the road is Blast From The Past. We purchased a few things here and the owner is a hoot.

At 1 Corn Square, you’ll find The Press Room. Now a café/eatery, it used to be home to Leominster News (hence the name). Having been on our feet for a few hours, we thought we deserved a break which included a good coffee and a few cakes. We didn’t fancy anything heavy at this point as we had plenty of nibbles we’d acquired along our travels, but the food coming out of the kitchen looked pretty scrummy - home-made fayre, and the customers seemed to be enjoying it. Definitely on our return visit radar.

After a good night’s sleep in our holiday home, we were treated to a little guided tour around the facilities and a look at some of the caravans and lodges on offer. This was entirely our request - don’t panic, you’ll not be harassed to buy. This is not Lanzarote time-share hell. Seriously the quality of accommodation here is simply exceptional, and this combined with the beautiful location and brilliant staff make Pearl Lake one of the most sought-after parks in the country. It’s five stars and it’s earned every single one through sheer dedication and passionate customer service.

Just before we left for home, we took one last relaxing walk around Pearl Lake and headed off to Ludlow, hoping to find somewhere for lunch. Ludlow, another market town, has plenty of good places to dine but could we find a table? Nope, they were all booked up or we could wait for an hour. This is an enchanting town so no real surprise it’s popular with locals and tourists. It was once described by Country Life magazine as “the most vibrant small town in England”. It certainly has real charm. It’s been around since the 11th Century, but we didn’t want to wait that long for lunch so thought we’d take a chance finding something on our return journey.

We’re so glad we did. Tootling down the Ludlow Road near Bridgenorth we happened upon The Down Inn, a carvery with rooms. Well, what can we say, after a great two-night break, it’s really lovely to finish things off on an even higher note and The Down Inn did not disappoint. This was one of the best carvery meals we’ve enjoyed in a long time. It was busy but we were fortunate enough to get a table. We were in and the food looked pretty appetising! The beef was utterly stunning and there was plenty of it. Everything about our meal here was superb: the meat, the vegetables, the gravy, the desserts, the service - we honestly couldn’t fault it. We would certainly go out of our way to dine here again in the future.

So, yet again, The Borders, this charming neck of the British woods, has delivered. A fabulous short break trying out the five-star caravan lifestyle complemented by lovely people and exceptional market towns that still deliver quintessentially Welsh and English products and services. There is hope for this country still, and the brilliant Pearl Lake team have restored our faith in the van lifestyle.

The Newbridge on Usk is a hotel and restaurant we have been visiting on and off since the late nineties. It’s always been one of our favourite places to stay in Monmouthshire. It’s now part of the renowned Celtic Collection and we absolutely love it.

TTHE PERFECT ESCAPE!

HE NEWBRIDGE ON USK

This gorgeous bolthole sits overlooking the River Usk in Tredunnock. I suppose the best way to describe it is a restaurant with rooms, and very nice rooms they are. It’s basically boutique style and recently had a little makeover and update which prompted our desire to return.

Before we made our way to The Newbridge on Usk, we stopped by The Celtic Manor Resort for a couples massage (as you do). We opted for the Forum Massage which consisted of a “50-minute personalised massage using classic Swedish techniques aimed to relax and de-stress whilst addressing your individual needs”. Our lovely therapists were very adept at their jobs, leaving us completely chilled and relaxed and ready to head to the hotel to get ready for dinner.

For our first evening, we’d booked ourselves in for dinner and it was everything we’d hoped it would be. Establishments change hands and you never really know what you’re going to get but, yet again, The Newbridge on Usk team delivered a superb meal. We both ordered Pressed Welsh Pork to start and, for our mains, Jennifer enjoyed Duet of Welsh Lamb and I chose Black Pepper Glazed Duck Breast. Both were perfectly cooked, and the accompanying sides complemented both dishes perfectly. Our chosen room was the Kindly Kingfisher, a Deluxe King with beautiful ensuite and balcony overlooking The Newbridge on Usk. It’s seriously luxurious with Penhaligon’s toiletries reinforcing the five-star ambience.

66

We could have just hidden ourselves away here, but The Newbridge on Usk is perfectly positioned to explore Monmouthshire, The Vale of Usk and further afield. Newport is twenty minutes downstream and Cardiff a mere thirty minutes. Ten minutes down the road is Caerleon - steeped in Roman history and home to one of our other favourite restaurants, The Priory. We know Cardiff and south-east Wales very well but on this occasion were drawn northwards.

First stop, Monmouth (Monmouth has officially been named as the UK’s first Bee Town). A lovely market town with plenty of history plus a thriving High Street. It has an M&S Food Hall and a Waitrose so that tells you something about the affluence of the area. The town sits majestically between the rivers Monnow and Wye (they meet close by) and is especially lovely in spring and summer (when the bees come out!). There are some fab indie shops here - a beautiful boutique named Raft and the Bees for Development shop which is jam packed with high quality bee products. Apparently they’re creating quite a buzz!

After a lovely hour in Monmouth, we head for a favourite drop-in, Baileys Home Store, near Ross-on-Wye. It’s a shrine to beautiful design and sells extremely eclectic, and cool, needful things for the home. It’s quite unique.

After a twenty minute mooch it’s off to Ledbury. Ledbury is a favourite town of ours to visit when in Herefordshire. It’s not too far away and has always been a magnet to us. It boasts beautiful timber-framed buildings; The Market House is particularly striking but perhaps the most iconic and attractive in Ledbury, is the Feathers Inn on High Street which dates back to 1560.

Ledbury has a great high street, home to several good butchers and greengrocers. We came across a little boutique gem called Juice (jewellery and accessories). The owner, Jules, is lovely and introduced us to a favourite eatery of hers, The Malthouse, just up Church Lane. What a wonderful find. Eggs Benedict for lunch and we must confess it was amongst the best we’ve had. The coffee and red wine was equally superb - how lucky is Ledbury?

After lunch we checked out the beautiful Saint Michael and All Angels church with its impressive bell tower at the top of the lane. There’s plenty of information about its history too –did you know it was mentioned in the Domesday Book?

Tucked in between the High Street and the main visitor parking area is one of Ledbury’s newest attractions and one of its oldest buildings. The Masters House is a large Tudor mansion built in 1487 for the Master of St Katherine’s Hospital and is now home to the library – it’s well worth a look. After another stroll along the High Street, we headed back to Tredunnock to enjoy a hot bath in our beautiful room.

Only a week before, the bed in which we slept was adorned with rose petals for a Valentine’s promo video. We can only imagine that The Newbridge on Usk would make the perfect romantic getaway or even a venue to celebrate an engagement or wedding. Just perfect!

A huge thanks to Mateus, Stewart and Rhys for looking after us. They were the perfect hosts, and we can honestly say The Newbridge on Usk remains one of our favourite places in Wales.

We’ve been meaning to visit Manchester for years but had never quite got around to it. With a window in our diary, we decided to make a beeline for the Northern Powerhouse capital.

M ANCHESTER CITYSUITES II

OUR H OME AWAY FROM HOME

“New spring menu now available.”

Manchester has plenty of places to stay but the centrally located CitySuites caught our eye. This relatively new, stylish development regularly has offers on their website and social channels, so it pays to sign up. We did and managed to grab a lovely two-night deal.

Located just next door to their original aparthotel CitySuites I, CitySuites II offers everything you need for a premium city centre stay. We chose a two-bed suite on the 10th floor which had great views. It’s beautifully designed with a neutral palette and smart designer furnishings, complemented by high quality linen and smart fixtures and fittings. The bathrooms are equally chic. Add luxurious toiletries by The White Company, a GHD hairdryer, and a Nespresso coffee machine and you really do have a home from home. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and superfast Wi-Fi so you can cook up a great meal if you wish and keep in touch with the world. It also boasts large, smart TVs in the lounge and bedroom - no Netflix though, shame.

Exclusive to CitySuites II is a steam room, which you’ll find on the ground floor next to the very swanky 18m swimming pool and jacuzzi. It also has a gym (think there’s 24hr access too). So, if you’re looking to work-out during your time away, then CitySuites II’s exclusive gym area has everything you need.

“CitySuites II offers everything you need for a premium city centre stay.”

If you do partake, you can certainly look forward to a good night’s sleep. The beds are so comfortable. Sometimes it’s really hard to get a good night sleep when away but here, and being on one of the upper floors, we heard no noise whatsoever from the city below. Honestly, this is one of the best night’s sleep we’ve had anywhere.

The following morning, after a fab shower, we headed to the Embankment Kitchen, located on the ground floor at CitySuites I (a hop and a skip across the courtyard). Again, it’s stylishly designed and served up an absolutely stunning full English breakfast we were ready to explore the city.

We had planned to get around on the trams, sadly that didn’t happen for one reason or another and we ended up staying within a mile of CitySuites. Honestly there’s plenty to see and do here. CitySuites is a stone’s throw away from Spinningfields, Manchester’s “number one destination” for vibrant bars and stylish restaurants (Tattu, Fazenda, The Ivy and Dishoom), and it’s easily accessible on foot. It’s also home to the John Rylands Library and The People’s Museum, one of the most stunning buildings in the city.

If you love shopping, the Arndale Centre is literally five minutes away and is home to all the big stores including Harvey Nichols. There are also plenty of independent shops down little side streets, so you’ll never be bored

Being culture vultures, we had to visit the Manchester Art Gallery which is very impressive. Some great works there. Unfortunately, Manchester Museum was closed so we headed for the Science and History Museum. Like the gallery, it’s free to enter which is good.

Afterwards, curiously, as we walked the streets, we kept noticing bees and bee themed businesses. We were reliably informed that the much-loved worker bee is an important symbol for the city. In 1842, the early Victorian city fathers undertook what I suppose today we’d call a branding exercise. They included a globe with seven bees to show how the Manchester bee was born of industry and symbolised its trading across the seven seas. Bee-spotting is a good way to spend time in the city. When you’re strolling the streets, look up, look around and you’ll see them everywhere.

On our second day, we visited Manchester Cathedral which is smaller than most city cathedrals but, even so, punches well above its weight. It’s very beautiful. It rained over one lunchtime, so we decided to visit the cinema - Vue in this case, and what was on? You may have guessed it, The Beekeeper with Jason Statham. Despite there being quite a buzz about it, unlike the cathedral, he wasn’t punching above his weight.

Later that evening, we enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Embankment Kitchen so if you fancy a meal and a drink and don’t want to drive or walk too far, you literally have an amazing restaurant on your doorstep.

Talking about hard work, we must pay tribute to the busy bees at CitySuites. All the staff are fantasticthe service and welcome we received was second to none.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Peak District and surrounded by the UK’s oldest National Park, Buxton is home of Buxton Water and the equally beautiful Buxton Crescent.

BUXTON C RESCENT

THE EPITOME OF 5 STAR LUXURY

Buxton is famous as a thermal spa town boasting stunning ornamental gardens and world-famous Georgian and Victorian architecture. It’s an impressive backdrop to a rich and vibrant range music, theatre and festivals scene. And where would you stay that matches the grandeur of this beautiful town? Well, if you’re going all in, then in our humble opinion, there can only be one destination: the Buxton Crescent.

The Crescent, as it’s affectionately known locally, was built for William Cavendish, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, as part of his scheme to establish Buxton as a fashionable Georgian spa town. Completed in 1789. The Crescent is a sublime sanctuary for those that appreciate natural health and the benefits of spa bathing. The architecturally significant Grade I listed building reminds us of the beautiful Royal Crescent in Bath. It is equally gorgeous.

The Buxton Crescent is the first UK property from Europe’s largest health spa operator - Ensana. It’s well worth checking out their website –they have some stunning spa hotels around Europe. The Crescent really is the epitome of luxury, comprised of 81 rooms and the spa is home to three pools and eight treatment rooms, with water wellness at the forefront of the hotel’s offering.

High up on the edge of The Peak District National Park, Buxton is a gateway to this area of outstanding natural beauty, contrasting rolling farmland, forests and deep valleys with high stony plateaus –there are many adventures to be enjoyed in this mesmerising part of England. When we stayed, on one day, we awoke to eight inches of snow and the town echoed with the joyous sounds of children building snowmen and racing their toboggans down the slopes of the park - very picture postcard. It was made all the more special because of the suite we were staying in.

Our Junior Suite on the second floor was simply gorgeous, with its four poster and duck egg blue, roll-top slipper bath reinforced the feeling of luxury. The stately interiors are complemented by modern staples – good size smart TVs with YouTube available, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout. If you were concerned about parking, rest easy, there’s valet parking and your vehicle is merely a telephone call away.

Having watched the forecast, we had toured the local area prior to arrival. We’d visited beautiful Bakewell (yes, home of the famous tart and pie), and the extremely pretty Ashfordin-the-Water, another chocolate box village which wouldn’t have been out of place in the Cotswolds. The countryside here is stunning. It’s pretty and everything feels quintessentially English.

Back at The Crescent, we simply had no real need for a car. Everything we wanted was to hand. They have a great bar - we spent some time there (cough). We enjoyed a couple of very relaxing spa treatments (Thermal Mud Treatment and Underwater Jet Massage), both were superb. We dined in the restaurant - the food was fivestar, as you’d expect. On the snowy day, we trudged a mile to Poole’s Cavern and enjoyed a thoroughly informative hour-long tour. What an amazing eye-opener. Our guide Robin made it particularly interesting. Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely coffee looking at the birds and squirrels at the feeders in front of the window. It was quite magical.

On our last evening, after a sensational early dinner, we headed for the Buxton Opera House for the Transatlantic Sessions. It was superb and the opera house, like The Crescent is utterly stunning. It is Council owned but run by a dedicated team of volunteers. If you visit The Crescent, I recommend you take in a show. It’s fabulous. We must confess when it came to depart, we were very sad to say goodbye. The staff at The Crescent are quite exceptional and a real credit to Manager Jonathan Dawson. Indeed, as if to remind us how good this hotel is, up popped a Facebook post announcing that their spa had been awarded the prestigious Five Bubble Luxury Standard by the Good Spa Guide. A class act indeed.

Bluestone National Park Resort is a 5-star luxury holiday destination located within 500 acres of wild Welsh countryside near Narberth, Pembrokeshire. But does it have enough on offer to keep the whole family entertained?

BLUESTONE

THE PERFECT FAMILY GETAWAY

We’ve visited several times in the past but there have been significant developments over the last decade. Dinas Powys butcher Glenn Griffith visited with his family recently, so we asked Glenn about his experiences.

How was the booking process?

It’s quite simple and straightforward. We’ve visited previously so knew what to expect. The website is good. Plenty of information.

What did you like about the accommodation?

There’s lots of space. Our Lodge slept six. Really lovely interior. It’s great for young children. Even if it’s raining, there’s tons to do and the cabins are light and spacious, so you don’t feel claustrophobic.

Was it clean and tidy?

Beds comfortable?

Spotless. In fact, that’s one of the things we commented on when we arrived. The beds are great. We definitely enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

72

Did you have everything you need in your lodge for a self-catering break? It’s really good. Everything you need is there. Even has a dishwasher. There’s on site shopping too so everything is really to hand. Some bits and bobs we brought with us, but you don’t have to, everything can be purchased on site.

Did you leave Bluestone during your stay?

We thought we might venture out but, in the end, the furthest we got was the restaurant about ten minutes away. You can go out, there’s tons to see and do in the area - we just didn’t feel the need this time around.

Were there plenty of things to do? What were your favourites?

Well, the pool (Blue Lagoon) was a big hit. We did have to queue a little. We were in off-peak though, so I imagine it’ll be a lot busier in the summer months. The Serendome is great because everything’s undercover.

There’s tons to do: walking, bikes, buggies – check out the website. There’s some really good activities.. They also have a Spa which is great.

As you went with a family with a young child and young adults, did you find there were enough activities to keep everyone happy? No problems there, there are plenty of places for teenagers to hide away from parents. It’s the perfect resort for families. This is our second time here. I’m pretty sure we’ll return.

Did you eat in any of the restaurants at Bluestone, if so, which one and how would you rate your experience? Yes, we booked dinner at Black Pool Mill. This is a stunning restored flour Mill. It’s impressive outside and beautiful inside. The food was incredibly good. I’m a butcher so I know quality meat when I see it and taste it - honestly, I was impressed. We had to have a steak and they were excellent. I think if you are staying here, Black pool Mill is a must visit, even for just one meal.

Do you think Bluestone is value for money?

Definitely out of season. We haven’t booked in summer so wouldn’t know the prices, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. No complaints there.

If Bluestone could do one thing better, what would it be?

I think a phone app would be great for booking things. We mentioned the pool being busy earlier. I think it would be useful for offers and advice on quiet and busy times. Push notifications perhaps. Just a thought.

Overall, out of 10, how would you rate your stay at Bluestone? It’s perfect really. Especially for families. I think an onsite phone app would certainly make it a 10/10.

Would you visit again? Would you recommend to family and friends? Definitely. It’s great we have this in Wales. Surprised there aren’t more like it throughout Wales. We’d certainly visit.

In an era dominated by online travel platforms and do-it-yourself bookings, you’re missing a trick if you’re not dropping in to your local independent travel agent.

THORNTON T RAVEL

PENARTH & BARRY

We all do it, we grab a cuppa, or something stronger, sit down in front of the computer or laptop and spend hours trying to find a great destination and/or a bargain. Sometimes it’s enjoyable, mostly it’s stressful. Personally, I’d rather talk to an expert face to face who, quite frankly, will do the work for me. Laziness? Perhaps, but I think a good, trusted, independent travel agent like Thornton Travel will have infinitely more travel knowhow than myself.

The significant benefits of using local travel agents often goes unnoticed. However, entrusting your travel plans to a knowledgeable and experienced local agent can seriously elevate your entire journey, offering personalised

services and insider insights that automated systems can simply lack. Their travel wisdom and invaluable assistance extend well beyond the capabilities of online algorithms.

So what are the advantages of using a high street agent? Here, self-confessed travel junkie Pam Thornton; owner of Thornton Travel which has branches in Cowbridge, Barry, Porthcawl and Penarth, outlines the main benefits.

“Booking online is fine until things go wrong. Then what looked like a great deal suddenly becomes your holiday nightmare.”

We believe everyone has a story to tell. They used to say, “we all have a book in us!” It’s true, and this is where we can help.

YOUR L EGACY

IT’S TIME TO TELL YOUR STORY

At Vale Life we have all the skills and services to be able to help you get your story out there, but why would you want to? Telling your story can be your legacy, a snapshot in time. The opportunity to show future generations what life was like right now and document your memories, so they won’t be lost forever.

You’re probably wondering where you might start but, honestly, it’s not as hard as you think. We can help with writing, editing, design, printing and publishing, and the process can be quite cathartic.

We publish Vale Life, and we’ve worked in the publishing world on and off for around forty years. But we’ve designed, printed and published many different publications over the decades. From humble A5 leaflets to books, from impressive annual reports to award winning journals, magazines, and newspapers. If it can be designed, printed and published, we’ve probably had a hand in it.

Over the years though, it’s been the story telling we’ve really enjoyed the most. You’ve probably read some in our magazines - the kind of stories that inspire and make us appreciate life and the lives of others. Yours could to!

Decades ago, publishing a book would be unthinkable. The costs involved would be, for most, simply unaffordable. But these days, with the revolution of digital publishing, you can create a book and literally print a few copies for yourself and your loved ones. You could even list it on Amazon!

A book of your life can be a great legacy, but you may also have a work of fiction you’d like published and promoted and we can certainly help with that too.

If you’d like to discuss publishing your own book, we’d love to hear from you.

Our contact details are below.

Want to transform your career? Itec Skills and Employment is nurturing growth in Wales to meet emerging skills gaps; upskilling staff and assisting with professional development.

ITEC SKILLS & EMPLOYMENT

NURTURING GROWTH IN WALES

In the heart of Wales, Itec Skills and Employment stands as a testament to the power of education and training, fostering local talent and boosting the economy. The organisation was established over 40 years ago, becoming a cornerstone of opportunity and helping to address emerging skills gaps. Itec has evolved into a beacon for learners and employers alike. Vale Life talked to Business Development Manager Lee Grindlay to find out more.

Lee, please tell us about Itec? Itec was established over forty years ago to meet emerging skills gaps; today we have grown to become one of Wales’ largest providers of skills and employment services. We have a team of over 200 employees and are continuing to grow. We are proud to be the first Welsh independent training provider to become employee-owned, with 100% of the business now owned by our employee-owners.

“Our Programme is open to everyone over 16.”

Is it just Wales that you operate in? No, We do deliver across Wales but also have a sister company “Itec @ the centre” based in London.

Primarily, what services does Itec offer and to whom?

We are one of the largest and most vocationally diverse work-based learning providers in Wales holding Welsh Government contracts to deliver Apprenticeships and Jobs Growth Wales Plus (JGW+) along with a Department for Work and Pensions contract, as a provider of Serco, to deliver Restart. In England we hold ESFA contracts to deliver Apprenticeships along with delivering commercial training.

Our Apprenticeship Programme is open to everyone over the age of 16 in employment looking to upskill and continue their personal and professional development. Job Growth Wales+ is for those aged 16-19 who are not in full-time education, employment, or training. The Restart Scheme will give individuals in Wales claiming Universal Credit (for at least 9 months) enhanced support to find jobs in their local area.

“Funding is available to support all businesses in Wales.”

Is funding available?

Absolutely, funding is available to support all businesses in Wales, regardless of size. Apprentices earn while they learn - so the employer pays the wages, and we meet the training costs. We focus on providing great quality training, the right skills pathways plus the appropriate level of support to help achieve economic durability.

Does the employer have to apply or can an employee initiate contact? We welcome both! The net result is everyone benefits.

You mentioned funding is available but is there a cost? Who ultimately pays?

In Apprenticeships, all qualifications are funded by the Welsh Government. As employees, all learner salaries remain the responsibility of the employer. The aim is through great training we increase the rewards for both employer and employee.

80
Luke Mitchell, Lee Grindlay, Svet Iliev, Gosia Rzeszotko, Liam John

What do you think are the primary benefits?

Work based learning and apprenticeships offers a dual benefit to employers, positively impacting both existing and new staff.

For existing employees, workbased learning provides an avenue for upskilling, and professional development. It fosters a culture of continuous learning, leading to increased job satisfaction and that means higher retention rates for employers.

Apprenticeships can bring a fresh influx of talent to the organisation, whilst also minimising costs. Providing the opportunities of training and apprenticeships means an employer can attract new staff members, which ensures employees quickly integrate into the company’s culture and operations.

Targeted training ensures that they stay abreast of industry advancements, enhancing their proficiency and adaptability.

How do we find out more information or make an application?

Please contact me or any of the team and we will guide you through the apprenticeship start process and answer any questions you may have. It is our job to ensure you have a full understanding of your chosen apprenticeship qualification and the requirements of this.

We will discuss the chosen qualification with you to ensure you understand the level of commitment required for the programme, we are here to help and to ensure starting a qualification is as easy as possible so if you have any questions please ask!

We’ll simplify paperwork for funding, aiming to keep it to a minimum for a seamless enrolment process. We can meet in person, over the phone, or via an online meeting based on your preferences. We appreciate that time is precious.

“Apprenticeships can bring a fresh influx of talent to the organisation.”

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with ITEC over the last few months, especially with Kym. I feel we have a great working relationship, and she is always on hand if we need support.

I am amazed at how much my apprentices have grown in confidence in just 3 months. Watching them develop their interpersonal, communication and influencing skills has been a pleasure and I would thoroughly recommend an apprenticeship in customer service.

I NCH GO B ODY C ONTOURING

Do you have any beauty issues that you are concerned about? Maybe crepe skin on your neck? An undefined jawline? Jowls? Deep laughter lines? Lip lines? Drooping eyelids?

Rachel uses heat to trigger the store of collagen inside your body to rejuvenate and shrink the fine lines and wrinkles on the face, hands and decollete.

“A difference can be seen in as little as an hour!”

Rachel has commissioned an exclusive machine with her manufacturer and is the only clinic to be using combined Cavitation Ultrasound Liposuction and Radio Frequency Tightening technology for the last eight years.

Testimonial

“I had my first session at Inch Go Lipo today and am so happy with the results! Rachel made me feel so comfortable in her fabulous clinic, and the cavitation treatment was relaxing and totally pain free! I’ve already lost inches off my tummy, and my shape is more defined. I loved the face lift treatment, my skin looks and feels amazing, and I have been wowed by how much my deepset lines have been reduced in just one session!”

Mentoring

One of the things we like about Lisa is she’s keen to help others. “I work with other women and young people teaching them to create or grow a website business, as well as work experience students from local colleges. I really do enjoy it.”

Celebration Day!

Lovers of The Ivy, Cardiff (and lovers of gin!) enjoyed an evening at the popular restaurant to celebrate St David’s Day with Cygnet Gin and Katherine Jenkins OBE.

Katherine, the founder of Cygnet Gin, served up the cocktails while The Ivy provided the canapes and good vibes, with their resident band.

“I have crafted my Cygnet Gin in the same way that I have approached my singing career, with the deepest respect for my audience, striving for a ‘best in glass’ experience that reflects all the values I hold close to my heart,” says Katherine.

There are two varieties available as part of the range - Cygnet Welsh Dry Gin and Cygnet 22 - the latter being Jenkins’ personal blend and a nod to the age the singer secured the largest recording contract in classical music history.

Katherine mingled with guests and was very generous with her time as was the affable Martin Roberts of BBC’s Homes Under The Hammer.

If you love gin (and who doesn’t?), we suggest you visit the Cygnet website and either order online or find out where the gin is available.

Glow Within Clinic

New premises launch

Friends, family and clients recently visited Glow Within Clinic at the clinic’s new home in 24 New Road, Porthcawl. Owned by Sarah Gardner, Vale Life’s autumn 2023 cover star, the clinic has been beautifully refurbished by Sarah’s husband Karl.

It is absolutely gorgeous and brought a touch of sunshine to a grey, drizzly day in March; pristine white rooms with pale gold accent colours, and you have to see the Instagram wall - it is stunning!

Sarah and therapist Morgan were on hand to greet guests with a glass of Prosecco and to show them around the various rooms and treatments available.

There’s even a relaxing room for clients to chill out pre and post treatment – just like you would expect in a hotel spa.

Follow Glow Within Clinic on their Facebook page to find out more about the treatments on offer.

A new website is being created and will be available soon – so watch this space!
