Holiday Expectation managment -By Liz Holst

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — or is it?

Thanksgiving is upon us, and Christmas just around the corner, and with this coupling come lots of expectations. For years, I wrestled with how to navigate the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas with some semblance of sanity. Truth is, I still struggle with managing “the Holidays” well. Who will be home? What are the lingering family tensions? How can I make it special for friends who will walk through the front door? The questions, and stresses, go on and on.

and excitement about the main things that you know are going to happen. Thanksgiving and Christmas will come, God willing. We will pause and give thanks to God for all he has done for us, and we will celebrate the birth of our Savior and be glad. Then there are the expectations — those unspoken and sometimes misguided, deep beliefs that something could happen. This is where my heart went awry. I allowed wrong expectations to overshadow the real Joy of the season. I needed a serious heart adjustment. I needed to discern what was driving those wrong expectations. I needed to be honest with myself and others, but where to start?

I knew I was in big trouble one year when I fell prey to the jewelry commercials that convinced me my husband loved me only if he gave me diamonds. Really? Well, I bought it — obviously a small, neatly wrapped package with a sparkly red bow represented true love. When that package wasn’t under the tree, and my Christmas Day was ruined, I knew I needed to To begin with, I needed to be mindful that take a closer look at my heart and try to find out my expectations were becoming idols. I was replacing true thanksgiving to God, and all the what was going on. And so began my journey toward “Holiday mercies he has shown, with turkey and pumpkin Expectation Management.” What did I discover? pie. Celebrating the birth of Jesus, the real What is God continuing to reveal to me each reason for Christmas, was being replaced with glittery trees and presents. Those things are year? good gifts, but they are not meant to take first First, there is joyful anticipation of the Holidays place in my heart. I needed to remind myself of

Five Steps to Holiday Sanity

1. Avoid letting Holiday expectations become holiday idols.

8

goodlifemagazine.org

the simple truth in 1 John 5:21: “keep yourself from idols.”

2. Be honest about your holiday fears, weaknesses, and insecurities. Communicating to others clearly that this can be a hard time of the year for me was the next step. Being honest and vulnerable wasn’t easy, but opening up the dialogue with my husband, my friend, or my coworker proved to be an amazing blessing. I found often that by communicating my angst, I found someone who was more than willing to help me. What a gift! What a sweet provision from God — which I would have missed out on had I not been honest.

3. Ask where your holiday expectations come from. Being aware of who or what was defining my expectations was another hurdle to get over. Was it my husband? My children? Extended family? Guilt? The media? Fear of man? The still, small voice of the Holy Spirit continues to help us when those “expectations gone awry” begin to surface in this way.

4. Plan ahead for holiday health maybe way ahead.

Being proactive — planning — was next. Knowing what I can and cannot do is one of the most helpful things I have discovered. Determining healthy boundaries before Thanksgiving and December is an ongoing practice at our house. One year, after a particularly bad holiday season, I wrote a letter to myself outlining what I would say “yes” to the following year. I gave

A Christ-centered college preparatory school for grades PreK4 through 12 serving Smyrna, Vinings, Buckhead and beyond 678-305-3027 whitefieldacademy.com

the letter to a dear friend who held it for me until the following October; I received it in the mail on November 1. To this day, I am thankful for my godly friend who had the wisdom to suggest this plan of action.

5.Remember God is the Hope of every holiday, however sweet or hard. Finally, and most importantly, it is essential to remember that we have a loving Savior whose plan is perfect. Whether it includes a large gathering of friends and family at Thanksgiving, or a happy Christmas celebration with squeals of delight or perhaps even tears of deep sorrow, it is exactly what God planned. He doesn’t make mistakes. It may be hard to weather the Holidays, and yet we are not without hope. Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that he “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Knowing that, we can ask for healthy and happy expectations, anticipating that because God is sovereignly and lovingly directing all that happens, it may actually be “the most wonderful time of the year.”

Are there dangerous idols hiding in your holiday expectations?

Lord, are you sure?

with Sadie Robertson by Gabriel Bland

Think back to a moment in your life where you thought, “I’m not equipped

to do this,” or maybe even “God, you’ve got the wrong person for the job.” If you have ever felt that way about something, big or small, congratulations.

Not the response you expected to hear? Let me explain. If you’ve ever felt inadequate, unequipped, or confused that God has called YOU to do something when there’s clearly no way that you are the best person to do it, then you are in really good company: Paul, Moses, Jeremiah, Noah, Abraham, Elizabeth, David, Mary, Esther.... the list goes on. When God chose David to be king of Israel, He said “…The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) The same is true for us. Our apparent inability to do it on our own makes us more aware of our daily need to rely on Him to be able to be who we were made to be. So if you feel like the plans and dreams for your life are within your grasp, then you’re dreaming too small. God’s dreams for our lives go beyond our own ability to make it happen, so that the only way we can truly find the greatest measure of fulfillment and joy in our lives is by relying on Him. This is a reality that has transformed the life of Sadie Robertson in such a radical way that she has many times had to ask God, “Are you sure you meant this for me?” Between her family’s sudden rise to fame through Duck Dynasty and her performances on Dancing with the Stars, Sadie’s life changed in a very short amount of time. From her personal experience, Sadie shares with us some practical advice on walking through the process of preparing for God’s calling on your life when you feel unequipped to do so.

“It’s like you know the Lord is trying to show you something that He wants you to walk in, but it’s almost like you can’t see the full picture. Since April, I have been going around on these prayer marches on our property. In the mornings, I have been waking up an hour earlier than I normally do, just to pray that God would allow me to see where He wants me to walk and that I would have the faith and the vulnerability to do it. And actually, this past weekend, I went to a women’s conference and just had an amazing, amazing time, and I felt the Lord say, 10

goodlifemagazine.org

If you feel like the plans and dreams for your life are within your grasp, then you’re dreaming too small.

‘Sadie, if you give me your image, I’ll give you my view.’ And so this weekend I surrendered any thought of my name, or anything that had to do with me, and just asked God, ‘Give me your view.’“ This doesn’t only apply to Sadie. As she says, “I think that there is something that the Lord wants to do in everybody’s life, and there’s a destiny to be walked in. But I think that a lot of times we just don’t tap into it or we just don’t think that we can, and we kind of put it on us, and the Lord is just waiting on our ‘Yes.’“

Power in the Process Simply realizing the dream God has for us is just the beginning. King David had to wait many years between being anointed as king and actually getting to rule— and this was no accident. The calling God has on your life, much like David’s, requires much growth and preparation for you to be ready to step into it. Sadie’s story may have happened a bit more suddenly than some, but that doesn’t mean she skips out on the process. “There’s definitely been a shift that’s been happening. He’s been posturing my heart on how to walk into this.” Sadie explains how conflicted she had been with the idea of fame. “I would ask God, ‘Are you sure you want to make me famous? Because I don’t really think I’m supposed to be a famous person. I mean, I don’t really know what to do, and I don’t really look like everybody else, and I don’t act like anybody else in this industry.’ And as the years have gone by, what I just said, hasn’t gone away, but my heart has changed so much. Anyone that has known me can see it. Because what God has done is shift my heart to a place where my prayer, when people see me or the work I do, is literally that they leave not knowing my name, but leave knowing the name of Jesus.”

God’s View Sadie discusses how she’s been following God’s view by stepping more into the ministry side and investing in her many followers. “We are setting up a lot of conferences next year, releasing my new book, and putting out a new devotional video series for small groups—stuff that makes it so I can walk into more of a friendship and discipleship with all of these people who have followed me on my journey the past few years.” God has given her a desire to disciple others and offer resources on how to transform the relationships in their own lives into ones that lead to real life-giving change. “I share a lot of the things that I walk through, and my reason for doing that is not so people know my redemption story, but to help people walk into theirs.”

You Can’t Do It Alone All throughout Sadie’s account of where God is calling her, the importance of authentic relationships is of the utmost importance. With an understanding that God made us for community, she and her team seek to provide

“I share a lot of the things that I walk through, and my reason for doing that is not so people know my redemption story, but to help people walk into theirs.” resources to those who have no clue where to start. Sadie advises, “Get connected with the people who are connected with you. I strongly encourage everyone to talk to one of their parents, a mentor, a sibling, a friend—and stay connected with those people who can actually see the full picture of your life.” Not only do we get to pick our friends, but our families—while not perfect—can be some of our greatest encouragers and our best opportunity to begin building intentional relationships to support one another. As Sadie puts it, our families can be “the warriors that stand next to us in this battle of life.”

Fun Fact:

Christmas with the Robertsons “My family is hilarious at Christmas. It is a full-on event. We have to type up a schedule for the week. Almost all of us live in the same neighborhood, about 75 of us, and over the course of the week, each house hosts a different event. We have brunch at one house, cookie decorations at another, and then at the end of the week, we have a talent show where each family has to come with a skit. Then on Christmas, one of the really special things is we all go over to my grandparents’ trailer. They are the only ones who don’t live in the neighborhood. They call us “icky folk” for living in one. We’ve never not gone to their house on Christmas day, and it’s like all of us, all 70 of us pack in to this little double-wide trailer with wrapping paper up to our knees. It’s a really special memory.”

Why Question ? By William Graham Recently, weʼve witnessed a host of widespread natural disasters. Closer to home, itʼs very likely that you have encountered a personal disaster—a divorce, a lost job, debilitating or life-threatening health problems, or some other heartbreaking trial. It is completely natural to ask why God would allow something like this to happen, why there is so much pain in this world, and why have you been affected while others seem to have it easy. To be honest, I donʼt have the answers. There are a few things that I do know, because they are promised to us in the Bible. God is in control. While we all want the mountaintop experiences—the wonderful times when everything is going well—those moments are few and fleeting. There is no golden ticket to an easy life. In fact, Jesus told us in John 16:33 that the opposite is true: “…In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV) Yes, there will be hard times—itʼs guaranteed—but thereʼs also a promise: Christ has overcome the world and He is in control. God promises that good will result from your trial. If you put your faith in Jesus, He will take your suffering and use it to a positive end. Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that for those who love God all things

work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (ESV) What you are going through is incredibly difficult and painful. However, I pray that you will take solace in knowing that God has a plan. You may not get to see the answer this side of Heaven, but even now He is working through you. Your life matters! God will walk beside you. God is not abandoning you in the midst of your darkest hour. Rather, He is walking alongside you and seeks to comfort you in your suffering. Further, God promises a glorious existence in Heaven and waits on the other side of the painful realities of this world. Those who put their faith and hope in Jesus will experience what is described in Revelations 21:4: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (ESV) What an amazing promise! My friends, short of the Lordʼs return, each of us will die at some point. In the scope of eternity, the important thing isnʼt when you stand before God, but where you stand with God. If youʼve placed your faith in Jesus, cling to Him. If you havenʼt, please donʼt put it off any longer. Heʼs the hope youʼre searching for and the only true and lasting remedy in this broken world.

3 REASONS TO DATE YOUR By Jefferson Bethke

A

ny person who’s been married for more than five minutes knows how carving out intentional time for your spouse doesn’t happen naturally—it has to be sought out and protected. If you are married, it’s the very center and foundation of your life, and so it should get even more attention than your job, the kids, and definitely your hobbies. But I think a lot of times it comes from thinking that the concept of “dating” is over once you get married. When in reality, we should be dating our spouses even more so after marriage. One of the best pieces of marriage advice I ever got was that you are either growing closer together or drifting apart; there is no neutral. So the times I feel like my wife Alyssa and I are in neutral or cruise control, we probably aren’t as close as we can be. So let’s start dating our spouse. Why?

1) IT GROWS YOU CLOSER TOGETHER For Alyssa and me, I think some of our best conversations (or, as Alyssa calls them, “heart-to-hearts”) happen when we are on some type of intentional date. When you are intentional with your time as a couple, it naturally leads to intentional conversation about dreams, hopes, and how each other is doing. For Alyssa and me, it’s where all the hustle and bustle of life (kids, diapers, dishes, etc.) slows down and we can look each other in the eye and check in and grow as a couple.

2) IT’S FUN A lot of married couples I know look back on their dating years with an attitude of “the good ol’ days.” They see their dating years as the times where they had fun, took risks, and made a ton of memories. Dating is fun! And so why would we stop it when we get married? Sure it takes planning, and time, and energy, but you’ll make

moments and memories, and you’ll never regret it.

SPOUSE

Making memories and moments throughout your marriage together is one of the best things you can do.

3) IT TELLS THE GREATEST STORY EVER I know this one seems a little more out of left field, but marriage ultimately is a shadow. It’s a rhythm and dance set up by God from the beginning to not be about us, but to tell us about something greater and bigger. It’s a dance we step into to tell a story about the cosmos, and heaven and earth, and ultimately the marriage of the Creator to His creation—us. When we date well, we tell a good story. That saying the vows isn’t the end, but the beginning. That getting married isn’t boring, but an eternal adventure. That intimacy takes work, but it’s so worth it. So when we date well, we are better reflecting our Creator and the story He’s trying to tell through us. So date your spouse. Put as much energy into it as anything else. And yes, date night will sometimes mean sitting on the couch after the kids go to bed and watching 4 episodes of Gilmore Girls (OK, maybe that’s just Alyssa’s and my thing) and sometimes it means getting a babysitter and making it special. Whatever it is, just put time and energy into it. And ultimately remember it’s about closeness and oneness. This has been an excerpt from the book, Love That Lasts : How we Discovered God’s Better Way For Love, Dating, Marriage, And Sex just released October 10, 2017. Jefferson and Alyssa Bethke blend their personal accounts to point to an inspiring and realistic vision of romantic relationships. New York Times Bestselling author of Jesus > Religion, Jefferson Bethke and his wife, Alyssa, are exposing false paths to love that permeate our culture. november/december 2017

PER MEAL?

It means that you have the opportunity to meet the needs of others like no other time in history. SERV, based out of Canton, GA, is revolutionizing the way people are being fed around the world. Through over a decade of research, development, and optimization, they can process, ship, and distribute a specialized food blend that is more nutritious than rice and beans, for only 8 cents per meal. For reference: In an average African village where SERV is operating, there are about 100 people.

That means, by partnering with SERV, you have the ability feed an entire village for a day, for only $8

And the food is only the beginning...

How:

Once we feed the people, we are able to help meet their individual needs and develop programs to make them selfsufficient. In Africa, that can look like many things including drilling wells, starting greenhouses, and feeding the school children so their grades and school attendance are significantly higher. In Cambodia, it helps to prevent human trafficking. In Dominican Republic, it supports a bilingual school for oprhans and street kids.
