GOOD DESIGN AWARDS 2014

WELCOME TO GOOD DESIGN Achieving good design isn’t always an easy journey. It takes time, passion and unwavering commitment. It demands great attention to detail and creative flexibility. It’s about being innovative in solution and smart in simplicity. It requires courage, and it commands respect.

On behalf of Good Design Australia, I want to thank all the designers and companies featured in this Yearbook for their support of the work we do in promoting excellence in design and innovation. You continue to be the driving force behind the passion we have for good design.

In a crowded marketplace, good design gives companies their competitive edge. It separates the extraordinary from the ordinary, excellence from mediocrity and brilliant from boring. Ultimately, good design is about making a difference - on functional, economical, aesthetic and sustainable levels. For the individual and society as a whole. At Good Design Australia we understand, support and celebrate this pursuit. We recognise top quality amongst the best products and services on Australian and global markets, critiqued against international benchmarks. Our Jury brings together expert design leaders from a diverse array of fields and countries. After more than 50 years, the Good Design Awards program is amongst the most trusted and recognised accolades of its kind in the world.

POWERHOUSE MUSEUM DESIGN AWARD Since 1992 the Powerhouse Museum has recognised excellence in Australian product design with its own Design Award and Selection as part of the annual Good Design Awards program. The Museum displays the winning products in the annual Good Design Awards exhibition. Some of these products and relevant design models and documents are added to the Museum's permanent collection of Australian industrial design. The Museum's selection is made from the annual Good Design Awards finalists and the selection criteria include good design, innovation and the significance of a product to Australia's material culture. Products must demonstrate innovation in design, technology or materials that are of real benefit to users. They must also show potential to become important in the lives of Australians,

be significant to Australian industry or provide an opportunity for Australian design to be recognised in the global marketplace. The Powerhouse Museum Design Award is given to a product that has potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of health, wellbeing or the environment. This could be by creating an opportunity to sustain or enhance quality of life through improved safety, diagnosis, treatment, reduced injuries or trauma. Or it could contribute to a significant reduction in water, energy or materials use, or create an opportunity for improved management of environments or ecosystems. The Powerhouse Museum Design Award recognises the important role for design in harnessing the challenges of science and technology to make a positive impact on our lives.

Novel Computer Game Controller Jury Comments “This highly innovative design provides a solution that addresses the therapy needs of children with Cerebral Palsy in a way not seen before. The Judges were impressed by the way the controller aids in developing motor skills for children with Cerebral Palsy in both clinical and home environments through the use of computer games. The Judges immediately recognised the potential to add a new dimension in clinical therapy for professionals working in this space through the engagement with patients in a fun and non-threatening way.

Hills Young Australian Design Award of the Year Max Hughes University of South Australia A problem with commercially available gaming controllers is that they are designed specifically for use by able-bodied children. These controllers require fine motor control and coordination in order to use them, restricting their suitability for children with reduced dexterity and sensory sensitivity. This design features a gaming controller system which captures the interest and motivation of children with Cerebral Palsy who have a tactile sensory deficiency in their hands. Using the controller with two hands may mean their sense of touch improves through a more immersive form of engagement compared to physical therapy, by providing vibration feedback to their hands.

MARS - Modular Artificial Reef Structure Hills Young Australian Design Award - Sustainability Alex Goad Monash University Jury Comments “MARS impressed the Judges through its use of materials and installation modularity to provide a way to combat the current and ever increasing damage to reef ecosystems. The consideration given in the research and investigation phase to create a solution from slip ceramic, a material closely mimicking the natural sub-structure for reef habitat, was noted as being an innovative feature of the design.

Modern human civilisation is putting increased pressure on our oceans. Climate-change, pollution, commercial fishing, water-runoff and dredging are destroying our reef ecosystems. The Modular Artificial Reef Structure (MARS) helps mitigate these effects by creating permanent habitats that encourages the colonisation of marine flora and fauna. The design acts as a modular skeleton that can mimic the height, width and complexity of natural reef environments. This encourages colonising organisms to prosper more effectively, quickly leading to an increase in marine biomass. MARS can be used to combat coral bleaching, transplant corals, regenerate damaged habitat and to create brand new ecosystems altogether.

Kamodo Fishing Kayak Hills Young Australian Design Award - Innovation Andrew Godin Monash University Kayak fishing is an exciting sport fuelled by the pursuit of adventure, adrenaline and exercise together with the affordability and convenience of car rooftop transport. There are however a range of ergonomic, packaging and functional limitations that detract from its enjoyment and appeal such as weight, awkward ergonomics and lack of modularity. Kamodo is a performance product for the avid kayak fisherman. Through prototyping and rigorous ergonomic development this kayak has been designed from the ground up with fishing in mind. Kamodo utilizes modern materials, technology and innovative features to deliver a new experience to the sport of kayak fishing.

Forcite Helmet System Hills Young Australian Design Award - Technology Alfred Boyadgis University of New South Wales Jury Comments “The designer showed a great knowledge of the target user’s requirements and how the use of technology can be integrated into a solution to address those needs. The Judges were very impressed with the level of product refinement and consideration given to all the duties that a motorcycle officer encounters on a daily basis. This concept is a technological step forward for police motorcycle helmet design and specification.”

Motorcycle officers are first to respond to an emergency in congested CBD areas all around the world. Currently, they are being hampered with outdated technology and are struggling to properly control emergency situations. Forcite is the next evolutionary step in modern day policing, which combines current and emerging technologies into a new helmet system that provides officers with enhanced communicational abilities, active footage streaming and number plate recognition all displayed on the HUD of the helmet.

Freeflow Train Carriage Robert White University of South Australia Trains funnel passengers on board by few sets of doors through the ticketing process and eventually to their seats. At peak times, trains can become very congested, especially in the vestibule (entryway) as passengers tend to linger instead of moving into the carriage, exacerbating the problem as more passengers try to board. This increases the time of an average stop, and makes the train run late. The Freeflow Train Carriage has been specifically designed to combat this problem by researching human movement and gestalt theory to design an interior that intuitively guides passengers into the carriage and discourages them from lingering in the entryway.

HypoKit Auto-Injector Andrew McIntyre University of South Australia The Glycoject HypoKit Autoinjector is a much needed update to emergency medicine for diabetics. Current hypo-kit injectors (only 1 available globally) consist of a separate syringe (containing water) and vial (containing glucagon). These must be carefully mixed to allow injection. The process of mixing and injecting the solution used by the current design is extremely difficult to perform accurately in a stressful emergency situation. Other issues include an exposed needle and poor pictorial instructions. The Glycoject Hypokit is an intuitive and usable solution that can be used easily, accurately and quickly in a panicked emergency situation.

Anchor’s LIGHTPROOF Milk Bottle Range Fonterra Pact Group Designed in New Zealand Fonterra’s Anchor brand, Inpact Innovation and Alto collaborated to design, test and manufacture Anchor’s revolutionary LIGHT PROOF™ bottle. The LIGHT PROOF™ bottle preserves the nutritional value, freshness and taste of milk. Research, prototypes and testing spanned many countries (South Africa, USA, Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK, Australia, NZ) and involved numerous experts and taste tests. The key to the innovation was to apply triple layer technology to Fresh Milk/Cream, ensuring the HDPE bottle was still light weight and recyclable. The inside and outside layers are opaque with the middle layer acting as the game changer to traditional milk packaging. The middle layer is black and blocks out 100% of light.

Silver Fern Farms Packaging Designworks Silver Fern Farms Designed in New Zealand In a typically bland meat category with no discernable difference between brands, we decided to re-invent the way beef is sold to consumers in the supermarket through new packaging formats that would break the category conventions and help communicate a new premium meat sector. The concept was ‘timeless heritage’, inspiring a modern imagining of a time when the butcher was the premiere provider of quality red meat. The company’s new eating quality standards system reinforced the brand’s claim to its own tier of quality. The language introduces a new confidence to the offering, with bold typography and punchy headers.
