Aswe bid farewell to one holiday, two more are just around the corner! Is it just me, or does Fall clothing shopping seem a little less exciting than Summer's? For me, the arrival of Fall is a bittersweet moment-packing away those beloved summer dresses and sandals, only to trade them for sweaters and boots. But it also signals the start of family gatherings, holiday baking, and the comfort of warm soups simmering on a chilly November night.
In this issue, I’m embracing the idea of warmth, both literally and figuratively. My publisher, Alissa, and I partnered with Nulook Blinds and Draperies (Page 20) to enhance the comfort of our home by installing new blinds and shutters. After spending the Summer without window coverings-especially with the sun glaring through a front window-we realized just how much they could help regulate the temperature. Donates $45,054 to Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region
The Cornerstone Association of REALTORS® (Cornerstone) kicked off their inaugural event, a Charity Golf Tournament, as the new association on September 12, 2024. Through the support of attendees, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and the community, the tournament was able to raise a total amount of $45,054 for Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region (Habitat).
REALTORS® were eager to come together for a good cause and enjoy a day on the course - with registration selling out within one month of ticket sales. To allow more participants the ability to give back, Cornerstone hosted an online auction for two weeks leading up to the tournament and raised over $7,000.
“In the months before our amalgamation, we kept repeating the phrase REALTORS® Together, Stronger Together. This sort of became the tagline for what we were building as we combined our four associations,” said Cornerstone Chair, Julie Sergi. “…seeing the incredible community spirit that has gone into putting on this incredible fundraiser, I know it’s much more than a tagline.”
Although this is Cornerstone’s first tournament, REALTORS® have a long history of supporting Habitat for Humanity. Habitat has been building homes in the Waterloo Region for over 30 years, with REALTORS® actively participating in various projects. In May 2024, Habitat concluded its chapter at the Khel Street build site, where REALTORS® rolled up their sleeves and offered support with constructing 43 homes for 43 families. With this project completed and more underway, Habitat continues to play a vital role in providing affordable housing for our communities.
Habitat is currently working on stacked townhome units on Shantz Hill bringing affordable housing to 24 families in Cambridge. They have also launched the “BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region” project aiming to bring 10,000 new affordable and attainable homes by 2030.
“We all have a stake in ensuring that our Region can grow sustainably and affordably, and we know that no one organization can solve the housing crisis alone,” said Philip Mill, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region. “Only through assembling community partners and an all-hands-on-deck approach can we begin tackling this problem. The Importance of Proper Home A Closer Look
Home insulation may not be the most exciting part of your renovation, but it’s crucial for comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term savings. Surprisingly, many homeowners are unaware of how to properly insulate their homes, or worse, are left with subpar insulation installed by contractors who may cut corners. Stories from professionals like electricians and plumbers reveal alarming cases where improper insulation has led to serious issues down the line, including trapped moisture, mold, mildew, and poor temperature regulation.
Basement Insulation: Don't Settle for Minimum Standards
In many North American homes, unfinished basements come with a basic R5 batt-style insulation, which often covers just half of the concrete walls. While this meets minimum building code standards, it’s inadequate for long-term use, especially when finishing your basement.
For regions like Ontario, the recommended R-value (a measure of insulation's effectiveness) for basements is at least R22. Relying on the minimum can lead to problems like condensation forming in the air gap between the drywall and the old insulation, causing mold to grow and compromising the space.
Insulating Walls and Attics
The main and upper floors of your home typically come with R14 insulation, but upgrading to at least R22 will ensure better energy efficiency. Windows are another area often neglected during renovations. Make sure gaps are properly insulated to prevent drafts and heat loss.
In your attic, insulation plays a crucial role in regulating your home’s temperature. A thermal gun can help spot any cold areas where insulation may be lacking or disturbed, allowing you to address these issues before they cause major discomfort.
Exterior Insulation: A Worthwhile Investment
For those looking to improve energy efficiency, exterior continuous insulation is an option worth considering. While it involves a higher upfront cost, it provides an extra layer of protection to reduce heat loss (by essentially wrapping the house in a blanket to reduce thermal bridging) and can help extend the lifespan of your heating and cooling systems. Plus, with fire-resilient properties that help stop the spread of fire, noncombustible stone wool insulation can make the difference between having a fire in your home or your home on fire.

We recently partnered with Nulook Blinds and Draperies, a local business in Kitchener that specializes in custom blinds, shutters, draperies, and hardware. Our goal was to install two different types of window coverings, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional.
Trina’s experience
Trina, Editor at HOMES+ Magazine, had a fantastic experience working with Nulook. After moving into her partner's home in Tavistock, Ontario, she embarked on a project to modernize the space. Alena and Ken from Nulook were incredibly helpful in choosing blinds and selecting patterns and colours that matched her vision. While Trina was initially drawn to automated blinds (which integrate seamlessly with Alexa), the home’s style and age was better suited to vertical blinds for the main areas and wooden horizontal blinds in the kitchen.
A noteworthy aspect, that she wasn’t aware of, was Nulook's adherence to Canada's Corded Window Covering Regulations, which aim to reduce strangulation risks for children. The vertical blinds Trina chose came with a child-safe wand mechanism that’s easy to use and the blinds glide smoothly. Her favourite, however, was the horizontal kitchen blind, which paired perfectly with the cabinetry and was simple to operate with a rod mechanism.
The installation, which included three vertical blinds and one horizontal blind, took only about an hour and a half. Gerry, Nulook’s installer, was professional, efficient, and offered insightful suggestions during both the measuring and installation process.
Overall, Trina’s experience with Nulook was outstanding, and she plans to use them again for future projects.
Alissa’s experience
For Alissa, Publisher at HOMES+ magazine; Alena at Nulook helped select blinds and shutters that blend style & practicality for a recently renovated home with kids and a dog. California shutters were selected for the sliding door in the master bedroom leading to the backyard. This product offers versatility through customizing the division of the shutters in sections to allow for filtered light & preferred exposure as well as the ability to open & fold the doors fully. The shutters are easy to clean & durable. This California shutter style was used in the two front living room windows, and children’s bedrooms as well. The horizontal lines blend into the rooms shiplap design seamlessly.
With the kitchen window located high behind the sink & faucet, a zebra blind was recommended for ease of operation with a child safe cased in cord. This style offers the ability to customize filtering in light, or opening & closing completely. The vinyl material is easy to clean which is perfect for a kitchen space. It gives the room a beautiful soft light and modern design. In the main bath, the zebra blind style was also utilized, but because the blind is easy to access, this style has the ability to open & close by pulling the base of the blind.
Gerry at Nulook measured the windows weeks ahead, and offered any further recommendations regarding the products to prepare for the installation process. He also installed the blinds and was friendly, knowledgeable and the process was quick and seamless.
The end result is a truly beautiful finished look to each room . The products add a completely different ambiance to the space. Alena’s knowledge was key in helping to consider the best fit for the home’s style and functionality. The family-feel small business service at Nulook is second to none, and their experience is evident in this process.
