B RIEF H ISTORY OF G ONZAGA C OLLEGE H IGH S CHOOL In 1821, Father Anthony Kohlmann of the Society of Jesus was the first to bring Ignatius’ vision of education to the Federal City of Washington, by founding what was then called the Washington Seminary.

In 1858, President Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name of the Seminary to Gonzaga College and granted the school a federal charter. At that time, Gonzaga was located at Ninth and Streets, N.W. In 1871, the school moved to its present home at North Capitol and Eye Streets, N.W. Other than St. Aloysius Church and Kohlmann Hall, the area was largely undeveloped. Over more than 100 years, the Jesuit Residence, Sheehy Theater, Dooley Hall, the gym and the field were all added. Development culminated this season with the completion of the Eye Street Campus.

Gonzaga committed itself in the 1970’s to remaining in a downtown location, where it serves a uniquely diverse student body, from all points of the compass.

VARSITY FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF Head Coach Randy Trivers Head Coach Randy Trivers enters his second year on Eye Street. During his first season, the Eagles won the DC State Football Championship. Prior to taking the helm at Gonzaga, Coach Trivers coached successfully at the high school level for many years in Maryland and, more recently, in Florida.

SEASON PREVIEW Calvert Hall (Baltimore) The Eagles have not played Calvert Hall since 1958. In the games played between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Gonzaga has 5 wins and 4 losses.

Two games ended in ties.

McKinley Tech The Trainers and Eagles have met twice in the past six season with the Eagles winning both by large margins.

Georgetown Prep With last year’s victory, the Eagles have won three games in a row, becoming the first to do so since the advent of the Jesuit Gridiron Classic in 2004.. The Eagles have an 8-3 edge against the Little Hoyas over the past decade.

Bishop McNamara The Eagles have beaten the Mustangs in each of the last five seasons.

St. Mary’s Ryken This is a first ever match-up with the Knights, the newest WCAC football member. Head Coach Jerry Franks was the DeMath’s head coach from 1972-1981.

EAGLES SCHEDULED TO PLAY TOP RANKED AREA TEAMS IN WCAC Bishop O’Connell Gonzaga last lost to the Knights in 2008.

DeMatha The Stags enter the season ranked #1 in the area and in the top ten nationally after winning the last two WCAC titles. Since 2010, the Eagles have won 4 and lost 4 to the league rivals.

Good Counsel After upsetting the #1 ranked Falcons in 2013, the Falcons returned the favor last season by beating the then #1 ranked Eagles. The Falcons enter the season ranked #2 in the area.

Archbishop Carroll The Eagles have dominated this series over the past decade. However, with new coaching, the Lions are seeking to restore gridiron glory to their end of North Capitol Street.

St. Johns This year marks the 91st meeting (including playoffs) since the Modern Era began in 1928. In that time, Gonzaga has won 45, lost 40, and tied 5 games. Since 1981, Gonzaga is 26-11 against SJC, but the teams have split the last six games.
