GONZAGA FATHERS CLUB Dear Basketball Fans: Welcome to the 36th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic. We are proud to continue this outstanding tradition, bringing together some of the country’s great schools and students for three days of exceptional basketball. What makes this tournament different, however, is its purpose. This event, which is staffed, promoted, organized, and managed entirely by volunteers, is focused on furthering Gonzaga’s service program. Our slogan—Great Basketball Supporting Good Works—is our objective. Service is a central part of a Gonzaga education. As fathers of current and former Gonzaga students, we know how important service has been to their education and formation. Over the past 36 years, since DC Classic Chairman Emeritus John McLaughlin and his colleagues founded the tournament, the Gonzaga Fathers Club has donated over $2.1 million toward service programs at Gonzaga College High School. Those donations are thanks to our sponsors and advertisers, many of whom have been with us for many years, the coaches and players who have participated in the tournament, and the fans who have come to see some great basketball. We are grateful for your attendance. We urge you to support those who support this tournament through advertisements in this program. PEDRO ARRUPE SERVICE AWARD Pat Williams, Class of 1977 In 2007, the Gonzaga Fathers Club established the Gonzaga DC Classic Pedro Arrupe Award to honor a graduate who exemplifies living out the Jesuit ideals. The award is named for Father Pedro Arrupe, SJ, who championed the formation of "men for others" through social justice and service. The awardee is selected by school leadership and honored during one of the Gonzaga tournament games. The Gonzaga Fathers Club and DC Classic Tournament Committee are proud to present the 2025 Pedro Arrupe Award to Mr. Pat Williams.

Pat Williams

A 1977 Gonzaga graduate and native of Chevy Chase (DC), Pat’s childhood exposure to both sports and Washington-area Catholic schools turned into a lifetime of service centered around the same. Educated on Eye Street and then the University of Maryland, Pat went onto to work professionally in multiple government administrations and in the technology and telecommunications industry in the city. Notably, even while his professional career was starting, Pat was also starting on his life-long avocation of youth sports.

Shortly after graduating college, and before having children of his own, Pat began coaching CYO teams at his childhood parish of Blessed Sacrament Parish in DC. His specialty was basketball where his coaching style focused on defense and camaraderie. Pat eventually transferred his time and talents to Holy Redeemer Parish in Kensington, coaching his own children and many more. Over his decades of service, Pat was a presence both courtside and in the hearts of the teams and families that benefited from his leadership. He is deserving 2016 inductee into the Catholic Business Network Youth Coaches Hall. Pat remains close to the Gonzaga community while keeping service and faith front and center in his life. The Gonzaga Fathers Club and School Community thanks Pat for demonstrating how we can all be “men for others”, and we congratulate him on this deserving award. AMDG.

M I K E K E L L E H E R S T U D E N T- A T H L E T E A W A R D Callahan Smith, Class of 2026 The 2025 Mike Kelleher Award honors a Gonzaga senior student-athlete who excels in academics, sports, and service, embodying the ideal of a “Man for Others.” This year’s recipient is Callahan Smith, Class of 2026. Callahan entered the soccer program as a sophomore with no prior experience as a goalie. Through determination and hard work, he rose to become the senior-year starter, leading his team to a WCAC Championship. He is also a three-year member of the Rugby Program and has played Varsity for the past two seasons. As Coach Devon Leary ’06 shared, “In my 13 years of service at Gonzaga, Callahan Smith stands out as a true student-athlete. It is an honor to be a part of his story!” Academically, Callahan has taken one of Gonzaga’s most rigorous course loads—five AP classes as a senior after four as a junior, preceded by nearly all honors courses—and has earned First Honors each year. His commitment to service is equally strong. He participated in the Emmitsburg Immersion, the McKenna Center Immersion, and a trip to Ecuador—three transformative experiences that reflect his dedication to faith, justice, and solidarity. He also volunteers regularly at the McKenna Center. Assistant Director of Campus Ministry Vince Rizzo noted, “Callahan may be one of the only students to ever do three different immersion trips. He is a big-time friend of the campus ministry program!” Callahan is active in leadership and ministry as a member of the Ignatian Leadership Team, a Student Government representative, and an altar server. After attending Kairos last year, he returned as a student leader. Known for his warmth, positivity, and genuine care for others, Callahan is a beloved presence in the Gonzaga community.

Chaminade College Preparatory School is an independent Catholic School for young men in Grades 6-12. The school bears the name of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, a priest who founded the Society of Mary (Marianists).

Located in Warminster Township, Bucks County, Pa, the school is named to honor the memory of the Most Reverend James F. Wood, the fifth Bishop of Philadelphia and its first Archbishop. Opened in 1964 as twin, single-sex facilities to serve the youth of Central and Upper Bucks County along with areas of Eastern Montgomery County, Pa., the schools merged in 1990.

It is the school’s Marianist roots that cause it to emphasize growth in faith, the development of the whole person, and the cultivation of Gospel values in a nurturing environment. Friendship Technology Preparatory Academy is a college preparatory high school serving over 325 students in grades 9-12. Under the umbrella of Friendship Public Charter School, Friendship Tech Prep offers a secondary STEM program that provides multiple opportunities for students to develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math through a robotics program, engineering classes, handson science curriculum, and the use of technology such as iPads and Smartboards.

Founded in 1789, Georgetown Preparatory School is America’s oldest Catholic boarding and day school for young men. Georgetown Prep is an independent, Jesuit, college preparatory school for grades 9-12. Located in North Bethesda, Maryland, the school enjoys the cultural and historic resources of the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. Both Georgetown Prep and Georgetown University sprang from the vision of the remarkable John Carroll, the first bishop of Baltimore. Carroll regarded the school as critical to the future of the Catholic Church in the United States. Several themes recur throughout Georgetown Prep’s history. Most importantly, the Jesuits of Georgetown regarded the Christian formation of students as their primary mission.

SCHOOL PROFILE

At Friendship Tech Prep students benefit from advanced placement and honors courses, as well as Career Academy courses that provide pathways in technology, science, engineering, law, and communication arts. Tech Prep has high graduation and college acceptance rates.

Knowledge and skills, although important, were approached as means to an end: the knowledge and love of God. The highly structured curriculum emphasized study of the classics as a means of disciplining the mind, imbibing the wisdom of the ancients, and developing eloquentia or facility in speaking and writing. Religious and ethnic pluralism also characterized the preparatory school. From its inception, Georgetown Prep accepted students from foreign countries and from religious traditions other than Roman Catholic. The aim of the Prep community is to provide young men not only with knowledge but also with the spiritual, moral, and aesthetic values which will prepare them for a life of high achievement, community service, and personal fulfillment. This year, Georgetown Prep celebrates its 236th year of forming Men for Others.

Friendship Tech Prep is preparing students for higher education and the career of their choice by ensuring mastery of skills, knowledge, and tools needed to succeed in the 21st-century green global economy. Our green school focus ensures that each member of the Tech Prep community learns to make environmentally conscious decisions and gains the experience to design and develop green products.

Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory day school for grades Preschool - 12. Our location also reinforces our commitment to service. Located on Gonzaga’s campus, The Father McKenna Center is a Catholic social service agency serving men struggling with homelessness.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s Upper, Middle, and Intermediate Schools are located on a 20 - acre campus in the suburban community of Potomac, Maryland, approximately 15 miles from the District of Columbia. A 75,000 square foot classroom building features state-of-the-art classrooms, science and technology laboratories, a two-story library, a media center and combined theater and assembly hall. The center of St. Andrew’s campus is home to a 43,000 - square-foot Student Center. This state-of- the-art building includes two gyms, a fitness center, multiple locker rooms, and a new athletic training space, and serves as the home of THE CENTER for TRANSFORMATIVE TEACHING & LEARNING at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. The Center leads the school’s effort to integrate the latest in neuro-educational research and Mind, Brain, and Education Science into the classroom. With a total enrollment of approximately 960, Gonzaga annually awards more than $4 million in financial aid to over 35% of its students. For nearly 175 years, St. Joseph’s Preparatory School has partnered with families throughout the Delaware Valley to support young men on their journey to become caring leaders in their communities, our city and the world.

Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (WY), “Where Academic Excellence is the Standard,” has a tradition of academic excellence and ethnic and cultural diversity. Located in a contemporary facility just north of the University of Illinois at Chicago, and ranked as one of the top public high schools in the United States, WY offers a very rigorous college preparatory curriculum. The Magnet High School Program educates approximately 2,164 students from grades 9-12, and the Academic Center educates approximately 271 students in grades 7-8. Both programs require special application and entrance testing. WY’s Special Education Department offers services for over 250 students with disabilities. Drawing students from throughout Chicago, the school is a microcosm of the entire city.

WY partners with both Loyola University and the Chicago City Colleges Dual Credit programs, and offers opportunities for students to take college courses while in high school, earning both high school and college credit. The curriculum emphasizes preparation in all core subject areas, offering a total of 266 courses including 33 AP classes and 88 Honors classes.

Like all schools in the global Jesuit Network, the Prep fosters intellectual development and cultivates moral and spiritual growth. At the Prep, our Ignatian heritage and Philadelphia location thoroughly prepare young men for their next journey. Our students go out from 17th and Girard embodying the characteristics of the Profile of a Graduate at Graduation: academically ambitious, open to growth, loving, religious and committed to social justice.

The school encourages the development of the whole student with a vibrant array of performing and fine arts programs and a 130-member full-time faculty. Virtually all WY students are accepted at fouryear universities. Every year WY students exceed in academics, athletics, and artistic team and individual challenges. Chaminade College Preparatory School

Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) power Archbishop Wood makes its third appearance in the Gonzaga DC Classic. Coach John Mosco is starting his 13th year with an overall record of 218-96, and a PCL Record of 115-49.

Chaminade College Preparatory School from St. Louis, Missouri, is making its second appearance in the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament. The Red Devils play in the Metro Catholic Conference (MCC). For the 2024-2025 season, the Red Devils went 22-10, finished first in conference play, and finished runner up in Missouri Class 6, the top class in the state.

TEAM PROFILE

With a 11-13 record last year in a rebuilding year, Archbishop Wood finished 10th in a strong PCL and won a playoff game. We return six of our top eight from last year’s team, led by 1st Team All-Catholic Brady MacAdams (Marist commit), juniors Jaydn Jekins (Top 30) & Caleb Lundy (Top 125). The Vikings have another strong preseason schedule set before opening PCL competition, hosting two Diane Mosco Foundation Shootouts including a December 5 matchup vs perennial powerhouse Imhotep Charter as well as two games at The Governors Challenge in Maryland. The Vikings will also be heading to Tampa, Florida in early January to participate in The W.O.N. Invitational Showcase. The team looks forward to competing against these quality basketball programs.

Under Frank Bennett, now in in his 13th year as head coach, Chaminade has amassed a record of 248 wins and 72 losses; a state championship, two state-runner up finishes, nine final-four appearances, multiple MCC titles and several district championships. Many of the players from these teams have gone on to successful basketball careers in college and beyond. This year’s team looks to continue their tradition of competing at a high level in and around the St. Louis area. The Red Devils’ roster is filled with outstanding and balanced talent including seniors Jonny Jordan (University of Omaha Commit), Tricy Collins, Jesiah Buchanan (SEMO offer), Elijah Poniewaz, Mohomed Kourouma, and Oskar Kuzman. These are new faces looking to continuing an old tradition of Chaminade basketball.

Notable alumni include Collin Gillespie (Villanova, Phoenix Suns), who played in the 2016 Gonzaga DC Classic; Matt Cerutti (Albany); Andrew Funk (Bucknell, Penn State); Tyree Pickron (LIU); Seth Pinkney (FIU); Rasool Diggins (UMASS); Jalil Bethea (Alabama); and Josh Reed (Drexel). Both Bethea and Reed played in the 2021 Gonzaga DC Classic.

Coach Bennett states, “We are grateful and excited to be able to participate in the Gonzaga D.C. Classic again this year! The combination of a premiere event and competition makes for a great experience for our school and community.”

Georgetown Preparatory School

District of Columbia Public Charter School Athletic Association (PCSAA) power Friendship Tech Prep makes its third appearance in the Gonzaga DC Classic, fresh off its fourth straight PCSAA Championship last season and a fourth straight appearance in the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA) Class AA State Tournament. Last year’s team finished 23-8 and finished undefeated in PCSAA play with an 11-0 record, and adding a fourth straight conference championship.

Georgetown Preparatory School from North Bethesda, Maryland returns to the Gonzaga DC Classic after recent participation in 2019 and 2022. The Hoyas play in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) and finished a challenging 2024-25 schedule with a 17-14 record, falling in the league championship game for the second year in a row.

TEAM PROFILE

Led by Coach Howard Blue, the Hoyas are looking to contend for another IAC championship. Georgetown Prep graduated six seniors from last year’s roster that have headed on to play Division I sports in college, so a large void has been left to be filled.

Friendship Tech featured a senior class with an impressive 85-27 over a four-year span, while setting school records for scoring and a blistering strike of games with over 100 points scored. The Titans produced several D-1 players and a number of D-2 players from last year’s team. As we open our 2025-26 campaign, Coach Dwayne Shackleford will continue to lean on senior guard Malik Shackleford, as well as junior forward Michael Jones-Lloyd, and newcomers that include senior forward Julian Ashe, junior forward Eric Ndaka, junior forward Amari Bandale, and rising sophomores Khadir Johnson, Kam Milam and Cayden Morrison. The Titans will play in several showcase events including Mayhem on Military Road on November 29, the Flint Hill Tournament on December 6, the Governors Challenge on December 27-28, as well as hosting their own MLK Tournament on January 17. Notable alumni include Malik Miller (Morgan State), David and Daniel Bumpass (Morgan State), Nazir Hinton (Bowie State), Aidan Haskins (Hampton), Montez Steele (UDC), Kenneth Tyree (Lincoln University).

Key returners hopeful to fill the void include Sinan Huan (7-1 Sr., Purdue commit), Jarrard Desire (6-0 Jr.), and Evan Edwards (5-11 Jr.). Selim Yalçin (6-7 Jr.), Majok Aguek (7-1 So.), and Kyle Davis (6-6 Jr.) are new varsity additions expected to play meaningful roles for the Hoyas this season. Aguek is joined by fellow impact sophomores in wing Cole Pierre-Louis (6’6) and Guard Beckham Hedequist (6’4). While Senior Rafa Monaro will add leadership and energy to this youthful squad.

Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School

Gonzaga College High School enters the 36th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic as the defending champion. This season, Gonzaga is excited to welcome new head coach Keith Urgo, Gonzaga Class of 1997. Over the past 18 years, Coach Urgo has coached at the collegiate level with roles at Villanova, Penn State, and Fordham. Three years ago, he became the Head Coach of Fordham, earning the title of Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in his first season.

Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School returns to the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament since their last appearance in 2021. The Lions play in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC) and are coming off a successful 2024-25 campaign where they finished 18-10 overall (9-3) and made it to the MAC Semi-finals.

TEAM PROFILE

The Lions are led by Head Coach Kevin Jones. Coach Jones has been with the program since 2011, and he also serves as Director of Athletics.

In 2024, the Eagles had an outstanding campaign where they finished 29-5 and were ranked #2 in the Washington Post’s final basketball poll while winning the D.C. State Athletic Association’s AA title. Gonzaga also had key wins over national powers winning the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, OR and the Hoophall Classic in Phoenix, AZ. Finally, Gonzaga won the DC Classic Championship for the fourth year in a row.

In 2025-26, St. Andrew’s will be led in the backcourt by senior 6’0 guard Karon Bailey and junior guards 6’2 Devin Wingfield and 6’2 Damon Nelson. The front court will be led by seniors 6’ 8” Jayson Peterson and 6’10 Sifeng Huan. The team provides some depth and will look for contributions from senior 6’4 Matt Strasnick, junior 6’3 Truett Engel, sophomores 6’4 Max Raue, 5’11 Josh Sternberg and freshman 6’3 Jason Kornegay. St. Andrew’s has a record of 81-34 (37-11) in the last four seasons. St. Andrew’s plays an up-tempo style and has been ranked in the Washington Post top 20 for eight consecutive seasons. St. Andrew’s has had numerous players go on to play at the NCAA division I, II & III levels.

After graduating a handful of Division 1 recruits, the 2025-26 team looks forward to games against national competition in the Behan Classic, the Hoop Dreams Classic and the Melo Classic. Gonzaga will also face their usual tough schedule in the DMV and, of course, the always loaded Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC). Coach Urgo says, “This is a special season for me returning to my alma mater. We look forward to an exciting and challenging year for Gonzaga basketball and are hoping to defend our Gonzaga DC Classic title.”

Coach Jones says, “This season is a great opportunity for our team and players collectively. We are truly grateful and excited to be participating in the 36th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic tournament.”

St. Joseph’s Prep returns three varsity players for the 2025-26 season. Will Lesovitz (6’5 senior wing), a starter last year, brings experience, leadership and versatility. He is one of the best wing shooters in the PCL who defends and rebounds. Myles Peterson (6’5 junior wing) also brings great versatility; his post and perimeter play will give the Hawks a balanced attack. Julian McKie (6’6 soph. wing) is a budding star and one of the best players in the 2028 Pennsylvania class. He has elite size and athleticism on the perimeter, along with an ability to score, make plays and defend /rebound. Justin McKie (6’4 soph. point guard) and Luke Maransky (6’0 soph. point guard), both rising 2028 stars, will complete the backcourt with outstanding shooting and playmaking skills.

Whitney Young enters the 2025–26 season with a tough, disciplined, and balanced roster built around senior standout and Tennessee commit Marquis Clark (6’3”), one of the top guards in the country. Key contributors include Zaire Green (Jr., 6’2”), a dynamic two-way guard; Caden Crudup (Jr., 6’4”), a strong, versatile wing; London Rome (Jr., 6’3”), an athletic guard who provides physicality and perimeter defense; Ed Williams (6’0”), a tough scoring threat; Jaivyn Richardson (So., 5’8”), a shifty playmaker; and Travis “TJ” Jamison (Fr., 6’5”), one of Chicago’s top rising prospects. Inside, Noah Emmanuel (Jr., 6’9”) anchors the paint as a rim protector and rebounder.

Other impact players are downhill guards with speed and toughness - Jayden Howlett (6’0 junior guard) and Alonzo Ellis (6’2 soph. guard). Kevin O’Connell (6’6 junior wing) is a versatile shooter. Washington, DC The McKenna Immersion Program is run right out of our own McKenna Center. Students will spend a week learning about hunger and homelessness in DC, living in the center for the week. Aside from getting to know the men at the center, students will get to do direct service at organizations around DC such as L’Arche, Unique, and DC Central Kitchen.

Emmitsburg, MD

Emmitsburg, MD Rather than spending a whole week in Emmitsburg, students will go out to serve in the community for a single day. Projects will include helping residents prepare for winter, do spring cleaning, and other various projects. Some groups will also join the ARC community to go bowling.

Jubilee Climate Farm

Harrisonburg, VA Rising sophomores and juniors will travel to Harrisonburg to partner with Jubilee Climate Farm, learning about climate and food justice in Virginia. This trip will challenge students to learn what it means “to create positive solutions for climate change, food justice, food sovereignty, land equity, and mutual empowerment.”

South Baltimore Retreat House Baltimore, MD

Students will travel to the South Baltimore Retreat House to spend five days encountering urban poverty in Maryland. Students will volunteer with a variety of organizations, such as Catholic Charities and the Loyola School.

Hope CommUnity Center

Crispaz

This immersion trip provides an opportunity for students in Gonzaga’s rising senior class to experience firsthand the present immigration dilemma facing our country. Students spend the week living with immigrant families in home stays and working with agricultural workers on farms and in nurseries throughout Apopka, FL. For this trip, Gonzaga partner’s with the Hope CommUnity Center, whom we have worked with for over 30 years.

Participants will travel to El Salvador’s capital city to partner with Crispaz, walking the life of Saint Oscar Romero and learning about injustices throughout the country. This trip will challenge students to reflect on the meaning of working for justice. This immersion focuses on encounter, education, immersion, and conversation rather than direct service.

Birmingham, Selma & Montgomery, AL Rising seniors have the opportunity to embark on a week-long Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama where we will be partnering with the Edmundite Missions. The week will be spent exploring the history and ongoing legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, visiting key landmarks/museums and engaging with local activists and community members. Conversations focused around racial justice and the Church’s call to justice will drive reflection throughout the week.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament was conceived and established by the Gonzaga High School Fathers Club to support the goals of good basketball, fellowship among teams and players, citizenship, and community service. Gonzaga believes that community service is an important principle of its educational philosophy, its motto of "Men For Others" serves to underscore this principle, which forms the foundation for the many community service projects in which the school and its students participate. Projects such as tutoring children in elementary schools, working with local groups for the handicapped, working with the poor in Appalachia and the Dominican Republic, participating in summer camps for inner city children, a work study project/cultural exchange with the Lakota Sioux Indians in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, working at The McKenna Center for the homeless right on the Gonzaga Campus, and working with migrant farmers in Apopka, Florida are just a few of the ways in which Gonzaga's students serve and learn about serving others. It is programs and projects such as these to which we pledge proceeds of our tournament. Basketball is a great sport and we of the Gonzaga Fathers Club believe it can also be a means by which we can promote the Gonzaga ideal of being "Men For Others."
