WELCOME CLASS OF 2021 dear new zag, Welcome to the family! We are so excited you chose Gonzaga University and cannot wait to have you on campus in August. Throughout your time at Gonzaga, you are going to experience and be a part of a wide array of activities on campus. All of GUide Core is looking forward to GUiding you through New Student Orientation and your first semester with the How to Zag program. GUide Core has been working all year to plan your experience as a new Zag and to make sure you feel welcomed as a valuable member of our community.

Coming to college is a big change – and can be an emotional experience. You might be feeling a combination of every emotion under the sun: excited and anxious, eager and scared, happy and sad, or all of the above. We want you to

Campus Public Safety & Security is a service-oriented department that promotes safety, security, education and personal responsibility.

Campus Security officers provide proactive patrol of the campus and University areas designed to detect and deter crime and facilitate a safe environment for the Gonzaga community. Patrols in and around the residence halls are a priority. Officers respond to a variety of incidents on campus including fire alarms, medical calls and reports of criminal activity.

Campus Security officers work in conjunction with Residence Hall staff, University administration and local police to seek compliance with and enforcement of Gonzaga policies, state laws and local ordinances.

A Campus Security Communications Center is staffed by security dispatchers 24/7, 365 days a year. Community members are encouraged to call security at (509) 313-2222 to request assistance or report suspicious persons or circumstances. There are also phones indicated by blue lights around campus that can be used in emergencies. Calls from these phones are answered by the Campus Security Communications Center staff.

The risk of crime increases away from campus.

Students should take particular note that nearly all of the assaults reported to Security each year take place off-campus between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on the weekends. Students are encouraged to avoid walking alone through the neighborhood during late night hours and to utilize Security escorts.

The Student Code of Conducts contains important information about policies, rules and expectations.

Take some time to look over the Code of Conduct and become familiar with the information. The alcohol, drug and weapons policies are particularly important.

Preventing crime is a team effort involving all Gonzaga community members. Our goal is to share accurate information in a timely manner with our community regarding crime, crime prevention, and campus security and safety issues. The Office of Community Standards manages the University’s conduct processes and provides resources, education, and workshops related to Gonzaga’s standards of conduct.

University conduct processes are formative and developmental in nature and our team strives to balance individual student needs with the needs of the Gonzaga University community.

The office publishes the University’s Student Code of Conduct, which outlines expectations for student conduct, student rights and responsibilities, and includes information about things such as the alcohol policy, drug policy, harassment and discrimination policy, and student conduct processes.

Students can view the Student Code of Conduct at www.gonzaga.edu/studentcodeofconduct and are encouraged to stop by the office with any questions about Gonzaga’s policies and expectations.

TRANSPORTATION weekend shuttle

Don’t have a car, and want to go downtown with your friends? Gonzaga Student Body Association (GSBA) provides students a free shuttle service to utilize that operates on the weekends. The shuttle is a great alternative to having and maintaining a car and gets students to the heart of downtown Spokane. The shuttle departs from and returns to Desmet Circle on a consistent schedule.

CPSS officers can provide a security escort and courtesy rides to any area on campus, as well as a portion of the immediate neighborhood adjacent to Gonzaga.

Students are encouraged to bring an older, inexpensive bike to use around campus. We strongly recommend a high quality U-type lock and strongly discourage cable and chain locks. Some residence halls have bike storage – contact Housing and Residence Life at housing@gonzaga.edu or (509) 313-4103 for more information. Once you are on campus, make sure to register your bike by visiting Campus Security & Public Safety in Welch Hall to register your bike or online www.gonzaga.edu/bicycle-registration

parking & permits

Most first year students choose not to bring a vehicle, as there is not a great need and parking is very limited. First year students who choose to bring a vehicle to campus must purchase a parking permit. Student parking permits are $85 + tax per year and can be purchased online starting Aug. 15. A printed reciept must be provided for pick up at Huetter Mansion.

Students may want to consider a Zipcar membership, if they only plan to use a vehicle occasionally (trips to the grocery store, etc.). Visit www.gonzaga. edu/zipcar for more info.

One of the first people you will meet is your Resident Assistant (RA). These leaders are students who help foster and ensure a sense of community and safety among hall residents. RAs develop relationships with all residents, coordinate hall events, help when you find yourself in a difficult situation, and encourage you to be involved in the Gonzaga experience.

ROOM & ROOMMATE ASSIGNMENTS: EARLY TO MID-JULY (you may have received your assignment already): You will receive a tentative building assignment and other important information. This information is emailed to your ZagMail account.

EARLY TO MID-AUGUST: You will receive specific information regarding your room assignment, including room number and initial information regarding your assigned roommate Please pay attention to your ZagMail account for important information from the Housing and Residence Life Office.

ROOMMATES

When you receive roommate information in August, say “hello.”.

We recommend coordinating with them what you will be bringing to the room so you don’t bring duplicate items that are OK to share. Our rooms are not big enough for two microwaves, two refrigerators, and two 50” TVs. The University believes strongly that living in community (including with a roommate) gives students an opportunity to deeply get to know people of differing backgrounds and attitudes. While you may not become best friends with your roommate, being able to learn to live with someone is an important life-skill with benefits beyond college.

STORAGE

There is limited space in your rooms. Bring only the necessities to make packing at the end of the year much easier. Decide, for instance, whether you will really ride your bicycle frequently or only a couple times when the weather is nice. (We have options for free bicycle storage locker use, if you bring a bicycle and do not want to store it in your room.)

LAUNDRY

Free residence hall laundry rooms are available with both washers and dryers. Just bring your own detergent and laundry supplies.

KITCHENS

Some halls have “kitchenettes” that can be used by residents.

Cookware is provided for community use, however, serving and beverage ware is not provided.

BUNK & LOFT KITS

Most beds can be bunked. Residence Life staff will have the hardware necessary to bunk your bed, if you wish. If you want to loft your bed so the space under it is empty, loft kits are available on a limited basis. To reserve a loft kit, visit www.gonzaga.edu/loftkits.

All incoming students will show a “not complete” application until our office assigns housing in the summer. However, the agreement becomes binding once the terms and conditions have been accepted.

WHY DOES MY APPLICATION SHOW AS NOT COMPLETED?

WHY WON’T SOME OF THE BUBBLES ON THE APPLICATION “COMPLETE”?

Some sections of the housing application remain open so students may make changes through mid-June. It is okay that they are not complete.

WHEN WILL I KNOW MY ROOM AND ROOMMATE?

Tentative building assignments are sent early- to mid-July. Room confirmation and roommate contact info are sent early- to mid-August.

I SUBMITTED MY DEPOSIT EARLY BUT DID NOT GET MY TOP CHOICE. WHY? Priority in the assignment process is based on the date the Housing Application Terms and Conditions are accepted, not the date admissions confirmation or housing deposits are submitted.

I AM AN “EARLY ACTION ADMIT,” BUT DID NOT GET MY TOP CHOICE. WHY? The demand for some living communities and housing styles exceed the supply. While we try to honor your preferences, assignment to a specific building, living-style, or with a preferred roommate is not guaranteed.

WHEN DO I CHECK-IN?

New students are encouraged to check-in on Friday, August 25, 2017 as part of Orientation Weekend. Exact times of move in are available on our Move-in webpage at www.gonzaga.edu/move-in. New students registered for PreOrientation programs will be allowed to arrive early at a time specified by the Housing and Residence Life Office and by each Pre-Orientation Program.

Gonzaga Mail Services is located on the south side of the BARC (817 E DeSmet Avenue). Students may receive and send packages/ mail via USPS, FEDEX, and UPS. Mail Services provides all services a US Postal sub-station does, including receiving certified, insured, priority, express, first class, parcel letters and packages. Students must pick up mail and packages at this location as there are no deliveries to residence halls or apartments. There are virtual mailboxes and secure lockers for distribution of mail/packages.

Students will receive an email letting them know they have mail. Students will need their ZAGCARD to pick-up mail/packages.

Mail Services regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mail Services is closed on weekends and University observed holidays. Mail Services will be open during Orientation Weekend on Friday, August 25 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, August 26 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Please have all incoming mail addressed as follows: (Student Name) Gonzaga University MSC (your number) 502 E Boone Ave Spokane, WA 99258 Students will receive their MSC number to their home address in July. Students may start sending things to campus 2 weeks prior to school starting.

Outgoing mail is picked up in Mail Services at 2:30 p.m. daily. Mail Services accepts Bulldog Bucks, cash, checks, and debit/credit cards with the exception of Discover and American Express.

Among the many transitions you face coming to college, one of the most important will be in regards to your academics. College courses have higher expectations and it can be a bit overwhelming at first. Resources such as professors, advisors and the Office of Academic Advising and Assistance (AAA) are ready and eager to help you succeed.

class schedules

Advisors in AAA will be working all summer on your first-semester schedules. As professional advisors, we use our knowledge of Gonzaga’s many degree programs and requirements, together with information you provide through the Academic Interest Survey (www.gonzaga. edu/ais), to compose your first-semester schedule. We also take into consideration AP/ IB credit and courses transferred from other institutions. Please contact the College Board to send AP/IB scores, and/or the College/University where you have earned college credit to have your transcript sent to Admissions, at your earliest convenience.

Your fall schedule will meet a variety of requirements, from University Core, to major and minor, and for some of you, elective credit. We guarantee everything you are registered for will count toward graduation, and will set you on the path to completing your degree in four years. This is just one of many ways Gonzaga works for you, ensuring the best possible start to your academic life. UMEC works to advocate for underrepresented students and provide experiential learning opportunities for all students in order to create a university community that integrates and values multiple perspectives and cultural narratives.

The Center is a welcome space for all students to hang-out, study, and connect with other Zags. Throughout the year, we provide innovative programs and activities that honor and affirm the value of human difference.

Some of the initiatives we hope you will participate in are:

Leadership, Education, Academic Development, Success Skills (LEADS) is a is a structured mentoring program focused on connecting students of color, First-generation or LGBTQ+ students with a peer mentor, and faculty or staff mentor during their first year. Mentoring relationships have proven to provide numerous intangible benefits and a circle of support which enables students to effectively develop and acclimate academically and socially.

MCHS promotes high scholarship; an appreciation for scholarly work and academic endeavors of others; recognizes leadership and service; and values human difference. Membership is selective and nominees must have completed at least fortyfive (45) credits with a minimum 3.2 GPA. Emphasis is placed on identifying and recognizing students from traditionally underrepresented populations at Gonzaga.

BEGINNING EARLY FALL SEMESTER

IGD is a pedagogical approach to learning and takes the form of prolonged (8-10 week) small group discussions between different groups (e.g. students of color and white students, LGBT students and heterosexual students, etc.) which are led by trained facilitators who create a safe space for intergroup interaction to take place. IGDs can be characterized as face-to-face discussions that are open, honest, challenging, and reflective around issues that exist between groups.

Each group is ideally comprised of equal representation of majority and underrepresented participants surrounding each topic.

Participants write a monologue in response to chosen theme such as resiliency and power of voice.

Our six award-winning mentoring and tutoring programs provide opportunities for you to work every week with local elementary and middle school youth.

You will serve as a role model for youth, while also learning about the local community and societal issues faced by today’s youth.

WEEKLY STUDENT ENGAGEMENT VOLUNTEERING

We have many ways for you to volunteer alongside other Gonzaga students addressing a variety of local community issues. You can serve meals with Campus Kitchens, form a community with adults with disabilities in Gonzaga University Specialized Recreation, or serve weekly at a local non-profit with your peers through the Zag Volunteer Corps Semester of Service program.

Join the ZVC Semester of Service program and serve weekly at a local non-profit organization. Partner organizations engage students in a range of projects serving youth, senior citizens, or members of the homeless community.

If you don’t have the ability to serve weekly throughout the semester, consider participating in a ZVC Saturday of Service project. You can serve once a month with a group of fellow students all over the city with our half-day Saturdays of service. This will give you a chance to work with various non-profits serving youth, helping construct homes, building trails, serving meals and much more.

SERVICE IMMERSION PROGRAMS

During winter or spring break, you can commit a week to serving in communities all over the country, from New York City to San Francisco and many in between.

Our immensely popular service immersion programs, Mission: Possible and Justice in January, send groups of students across the country to serve, learn and engage in a diverse set of communities. We also provide an international immersion each summer.
