• Soil Health – rotational and conservation grazing

• Improve efficiency – animal performance, reducing waste etc.

• Peatland

• Blue Carbon

• More renewables

Sustainable Land Management

• 4500 acres owned within Berwyn SSSI, SPA, SAC

• 2200 acres farmed in-hand

Action Plan

• Energy Efficiency

• Food Waste

• Recycling

• Packaging

Lessons Learned

Record as much data as you can.

Be consistent with measuring, rather than focusing on numbers.

Engage as many people/staff as you can – everyone can make a difference.

Small things add up.

Share your experiences with others and have conversations.

Optimum solution for a business to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs

An anonymised Case study

David Sprake BEng(hons), CEng, MEI, FHEA, PGCE, PhD

Biggest challenges

• Decarbonise electricity

• Lack of funding/investment in new infrastructure

• Grid connection limitations

• Future energy price rises

Demand modelling: How much energy is used (and

when)

Indicative demand profiles (hourly over a year)

Predicted hourly solar electricity production of a 3MW array near location of business (2022-2023)

From hourly solar meteorological data

Typical week August

Predicted hourly electricity production of 5 x 1 MW wind turbines near location of business (2023)

From hourly solar meteorological data

Energy model:

For any given size of solar, wind, and storage, the optimum solution (for payback time, carbon reduction, and upfront cost) can be calculated

Example Results

Financial modelling

For any size and combination of solar, wind, or storage system, we calculate:

Wind turbine installation not possible due to planning permission restrictions

Comparison of solar scenarios

Negative and ultra-low price wholesale power

Software predicts the optimum strategy to buy, sell, or use electricity.

Factory
Grid

Optimum solution/ Benefits

Decarbonise electricity

• 80%+ low carbon electricity

Investment in new solar and battery storage

• £0 operator install (PPA agreement)

Details confidential

Limitations to grid connection

The battery manages grid constraints and allows for a larger PV system.

Future energy price protection

• Fixed for 15 years (No inflation or price hikes)

• Original cost of electricity 21p/kWh

• New electricity price: 14p/kWh (for all energy consumed)
