Sports Information Staff

The Northeastern University Sports Information office handles the publicity of all 18 varsity sports. Sports information staff members coordinate game day media services, coordinate interviews, conduct press conferences, produces publications, compiles statistics and historical information and maintains the official website of Northeastern Athletics, GoNU.com.

Interviews All interviews with student-athletes, coaches and administrative staff must be coordinated through the sports information office.

On game days, student-athletes will not be available for interviews until post-game.

Members of the media wishing to speak to a player or coach should notify media contact Robert Mullen prior to the end of a contest. All Northeastern locker rooms are closed to the media.

On non-game days, interviews must be coordinated through the sports information office preferably at least 24 hours in advance. A student-athlete’s phone number and e-mail address will not be released unless that student-athlete gives permission. Student-athletes will not be asked to miss class time. The sports information office will do its best to provide an interview time that is mutually convenient for both the player/coach and the media representative.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

A Northeastern education is built on the idea that every form of learning — whether in the classroom, in the workplace or in the community — is crucial to preparing students for their careers and their lives.

Created in 1909, Northeastern’s co-op program is recognized as the national leader in practice-oriented education. Whether Northeastern students want to explore career opportunities or gain experience in the workplace, NU’s co-op program becomes an invaluable tool for students in shaping their futures.

Many Northeastern graduates describe the insights gained through their experiences on co-op as “a turning point” or “life changing.”

The faculty cite co-op as a major contributor to the reality and rigor of the classroom experience. And Northeastern students know that co-op gives them a competitive edge in the marketplace, whatever their chosen field.

Co-op programs typically consist of a freshman year of full-time study followed by three or four upperclass years during which students alternate periods of classroom study with work and career experiences.

Students who choose a four-year program at NU can complete as many

as two co-ops. Students who choose a five-year program can complete as many as three co-ops. At any given time, about 6,000 students are working in approximately 2,500 co-op sites in Boston, across the United States, and around the world. About 30 percent of co-op students eventually go on to work full-time with one of their co-op employers. All of them graduate with an experience-filled resume.

On co-op, students can discover what they want to do or, just as importantly, don’t want to do. They can try out jobs and test out theories in many different work settings. When back in the classroom, students then can apply what they’ve learned in the real world to their coursework.

Northeastern co-ops learn how to apply for a job and, once they have a position, how to do the job well. They discover the skills demanded of the serious professional: setting goals and meeting them, working with others, dealing with organizational politics, squaring values and goals with those of their employers, and balancing work and personal time.

The lessons learned along the way can be applied to creating a satisfying career – and to living a good life.

melissa cohen - a Success on and off the FIELD A true Northeastern experience for the student-athlete goes beyond the books and the playing field; it steps out into the real world. Just like a student studies material to prepare for a test and an athlete practices before games, Northeastern prepares its students for their future career with full immersion into six-month cooperative (co-op) education rotations. These encourage a hands-on learning experience of the field into which they’re going.

Melissa Cohen was a three-year starter for the Huskies women’s soccer program. As a midfielder, she accumulated 20 points in her career (1998-2001), including a career-high eight in 2000, when she helped NU to its first-ever winning season. She is still tied for sixth all-time in career assists with eight.

In addition to her achievements on the field, Cohen also stood out as one student-athlete able to get the most out of Northeastern through co-op. She graduated from the College of Arts & Sciences, majoring in Communications with a minor in Journalism. The Randolph, N.J., native found the co-op program and Boston to be her two biggest

reasons for choosing Northeastern. She held three different co-op jobs during her time here, all doing public relations work for different firms in Boston. The first was at Massport Communication, the second, LNS Communications Inc. and the last was at Sunlife Financial.

“I really liked all of my co-op jobs,” Cohen said.

Northeastern strives to make the job-finding process as easy as possible. Students are assigned a co-op advisor with whom to meet and confer. They go through the interview process and compete for jobs from employers. The more effort you put into the process, the more you will get out of it.

“I had a great co-op advisor, but you can’t be handed everything.”

After Cohen finished her second co-op position at LNS Communications Inc., she continued to intern there for three months while taking classes.

Upon graduation, she realized that what she was doing in her co-op job was what she wanted to continue pursuing. She stayed on with LNS for a year, and she is now a public relations manager at Metis Communications, located in Boston’s South End. Her advice to other students in the co-op program is to “take full advantage of it…you have to make the most of the opportunity that’s given to you.”

All Northeastern student-athletes participate in service projects in an effort to improve the community, both on campus and throughout New England. In addition to leading an array of community service projects, free clinics and local events, Northeastern and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) initiated the “Husky Wish Gift” program, a student-run, virtual foundation. In its first year, the program helped raise over $5,000 for Boston-area schools, teams and community organizations dedicated to increasing opportunities for youth to play sports.

In its first year, the Husky Wish Gift program presented gifts to six organizations, including Roxbury’s Hawthorne Youth & Community Center.

The center hosts a free summer program that offers kids dance and athletic opportunities, in addition to leadership, teamwork and violence prevention skills. Husky Wish Gift funds were used to hire high school students as program leaders and mentors.

Northeastern student-athletes also take active roles in the Boston community and work with area youth in various programs, both in the classroom and on the the playing fields. Northeastern also has an extensive program for student-athlete education that focuses on leadership, like skills and career training.

The Northeastern University Sports Performance Center is in its second year of existence. The center is a collaboration of the sports medicine and strength & conditioning departments that serve Northeastern’s student-athletes. Northeastern University’s Sports Performance Center is committed to providing the finest methods, specialists and programming seamlessly integrated to enhance and maintain its studentathletes health, performance and welfare.

The Sports Performance Center is under the leadership of Art Horne, the department’s interim director. Horne has over 10 years of experience as both an athletic trainer and strength & conditioning coach. He has taken that experience, along with the experience and expertise of those professionals and leaders both at Northeastern and across North America, and has integrated them into a holistic treatment and performance approach. Under horne’s leadership, athletic trainers and performance coaches approach injury managment and care proactively as opposed to the traditional reactive approach. Through

these means, student-athletes are able to avoid preventable injuries, return to play more quickly and continue to train for their sport at the highest level. In addition, educational initiatives set forth by the performance team allow studentathletes to take charge of their own health and wellness for when they leave Northeastern. This includes providing nutrition, illness prevention and wellness programming while student-athletes are active.

Horne came to Northeastern in 2003 and has been the athletic trainer and strength & conditioning coach for the men’s basketball team during his entire tenure on Huntington Avenue.

In addition to his duties with men’s basketball, Horne serves as the coordinator for the sports medicine department’s Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine, a national conference that brings in international experts from both sports medicine and strength & conditioning to lecture, discuss and debate a wide variety of subjects regarding health, wellness and human performance. Horne also serves as Northeastern University’s Sports Performance Center has introduced a unique way of approaching how it handles both health care and sport performance for its student-athletes. While most schools and health care settings still employ the traditional “reactive approach” after injury or breakdown, Northeastern’s Sports Performance Center is taking a fresh “proactive approach” to injury management.

Through tailored biomechanical assessments followed by both general and specific intervention strategies, the sports performance team is working towards the prevention of future injuries while also fine-tuning each student-athlete’s performance by addressing underlying movement impairments, range of motion differences, and strength ratios. Through these means, the hopes of chasing championships today and chasing post-graduation dreams tomorrow are clearly within the reach of all of NU’s student-athletes.

The Northeastern men’s and women’s soccer teams have a premier facility for their practices and home games: Parsons Field. The Brookline facility recently underwent a renovation of the surface, and the field now sports state-of-the-art FieldTurf that is as close to real grass as possible.

Parsons Field has now undergone major renovations three times over the last 20 years. In 2001, the field was fitted with an AstroPlay surface that served Northeastern well. In 1992, brand new aluminum grandstands and a new press box equipped with video platforms were installed. The Zabilski Field House, which houses the soccer and baseball programs, was also renovated in 1992 with updated locker rooms and showers.

The well-groomed seven acres contain not only the multipurpose turf surface and grandstand, but also the adjacent Friedman Diamond, home of Huskies baseball, with new dugouts and new scoreboard.

The venerable athletic facility dates back to the turn of the century when as a public playground it played host to a young Red Sox pitcher and Kent Street resident by the name of Babe Ruth, who would drop by to play a game of catch with the locals. Later, the field became the property of Huntington Prep School and in the 1920s hosted the Husky baseball, soccer and track teams. In 1930, NU purchased the property and in 1969 dedicated it in the name of former athlete, coach and athletics director Edward S. Parsons.

The Northeastern baseball team has played its games in the same lot since 1925. The earliest Husky teams used the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, which had been abandoned by the Red Sox in 1912.

The long history of the seven acres on Kent Street starts with the lot as a park. In 1930, NU bought the lot. The field that the Huskies acquired was very different from the field that sits on Kent Street today. The baseball diamond was located in what is now the east endzone of Parsons Field. Houses lined the outfield, the Lawlor house in centerfield, as well as the Richards house in left, were reachable by a well-hit flyball.

In 1972, NU added turf to Parsons Field, and the baseball diamond had to be moved to its present location in the southern corner of the field. The new multisurface field’s dimensions were set at the 330 feet to left and right and 400 in center. It has since become 435 feet to center, making it one of the country’s most adventurous parks to play in.

Through the years the field has also hosted football, field hockey, soccer, women’s lacrosse and track. The field is still used by teams from Brookline High School and by various Brookline summer leagues.

The park has gone by various names during its history. During the YMCA ownership, it was referred to as the Huntington Field (for the Y’s Huntington Prep School, not the Avenue). During its first 30 years under NU it was known first as the Kent Street Field, and later as the Northeastern University field. Since 1969, the grounds have honored Edward Parsons. The baseball field became known as Friedman Diamond in 1988.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE Northeastern has had great success at home over the years, including an undefeated season in 2006. Since 2000, the Huskies are 53-21-8 at Parsons Field.

TRACEY LEONE Tracey Leone is in her first season as head coach of the Northeastern women’s soccer program, and she comes to the Huskies a proven winner in her 19 years as both a collegiate and international coach and as a threetime national champion midfielder at North Carolina. With her impressive credentials, Leone is the perfect choice to lead the rising Huskies women’s soccer program into the national spotlight.

Leone, who is the program’s third head coach since its inception in 1996, takes over a Northeastern team that has risen to the top of the Colonial Athletic Association in recent years. The Huskies won the 2008 CAA Championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and won their first-round game. In 2009, the Huskies were the class of the conference in the regular season, going 7-1-3 to take the regular season crown.

“To say that we are thrilled to welcome a coach and person the quality of Tracey would be an understatement,” Northeastern Athletics Director Peter Roby said.

“Tracey brings world class qualifications to our women’s soccer program and to Northeastern. We are excited for her and for our student-athletes.”

Leone most recently spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard, where she teamed up with her husband and head coach, Ray Leone, to help lead the Crimson to back-to-back Ivy League championships in 2008 and ‘09. Harvard went 29-16-7 while Leone was in Cambridge.

Including the stint at Harvard, Leone has spent 13 seasons coaching with her husband at multiple institutions. She was an assistant coach for Ray at Arizona State from 2005-06 and at Creighton from 1991-92. Leone left Creighton in 1993 to start Clemson’s women’s soccer program as head coach, and Ray joined her as assistant coach a year later. In the program’s first season, 1994, Leone guided the Tigers to a 15-4-1 record, an NCAA Tournament appearance and a final ranking of 13 in the NSCAA national poll. For her efforts, she was named the NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year.

Leone went on to lead Clemson to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including trips to the quarterfinals in 1997 and ‘99. In total, she was 89-39-4 at Clemson, including four NCAA Tournament victories. Her Tigers

were in the national rankings 57 consecutive weeks from 1994 to 1999.

Leone developed excellent talent on the field while at Clemson. She coached two NSCAA All-Americans, including Carmie Landeen, who was the 1994 ACC Rookie of the Year after leading the conference in scoring. Leone had 17 All-ACC selections under her watch, including eight first-team honorees.

Between collegiate coaching positions, Leone brought her expertise to the international level, serving as the head coach for the United States Soccer Federation Under-19 women’s national team from 2000-03 and then serving as an assistant coach to the U.S. women’s soccer national team during the 2004 Olympics. With the Under-19 team, Leone brought home a world championship in 2002, becoming the first American to win a world championship as both a player and as a head coach. She had won a world championship with the U.S. national team in 1991, her fourth and final year with the squad.

With the U.S. national team in 2004, Leone served under head coach April Heinrichs, and the duo helped the United States go 2-1 in pool play, then defeat Japan, Germany and Brazil en route to the gold medal.

Leone’s playing career at North Carolina was nothing short of remarkable. A four-year letterwinner as a midfielder under legendary head coach Anson Dorrance, Leone helped lead the Tar Heels to national championships in 1986, ‘87 and ‘89 with a runner-up finish in 1985. Her record as a Tar Heel was 89-2-4.

She was a three-time NSCAA All-America second team selection and was also an All-College Cup honoree in 1987 and ‘89, taking Defensive MVP honors in ‘89. She scored the game-winning goal in UNC’s 1986 national championship win over Colorado College. Leone’s incredible play earned her a spot on the ACC’s Top 50 players of all-time.

Leone, who originally hails from Dallas, Texas, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from North Carolina in 1989. A licensed USSF “A” and NSCAA National coach, Leone still serves as an Olympic Development coach at the state and regional level and is the head coach of the Region III Girls Olympic Development program. Leone and her husband, Ray, live in Winchester, Mass., with their daughter Mattea.

ASSISTANT COACH Alma Mater: Clemson ’00 Years at NU: First Season

LINDSAY MASSENGALE

Lindsay Massengale, a former professional soccer player and star defender at Clemson University, is in her first season as assistant women’s soccer coach for the Huskies. Massengale arrives at Northeastern with a wealth of experience as a soccer coach and player and strength & conditioning coach.

Massengale is reunited with NU head coach Tracey Leone, who was her head coach at Clemson when she lettered there from 1995-98. At Clemson, Massengale was a four-year starter as a midfielder and defender and scored five goals and had 10 assists for a total of 20 points. She was an All-ACC second team selection in 1997. Clemson advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four years she played and advanced to the NCAA Final Eight in 1997.

Prior to joining NU, Massengale was the head coach of the Mountain View/Los Altos Soccer Club’s Under-14 Hurricanes, Under-14 Cyclones and Under-11 Typhoons, where she scheduled all training sessions and games and develop youth players’ skills through individual and group clinics.

Massengale has 10 years of coaching experience at the Division I women’s soccer level, most recently spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Idaho State, where she helped lead the Bengals to the 2006 Big Sky championship and appearance in the NCAA College Cup. In addition

ASHLEY PHILLIPS

Ashley Phillips is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Huskies. She is a former collegiate standout at Clemson and current goalkeeper for the Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer. She comes to Northeastern with experience as a professional soccer player and youth soccer coach and is reunited with Huskies head coach Tracey Leone, who served as her national team coach in 2003.

Phillips joined the Breakers as a developmental player in 2009 and was promoted to the active roster in 2010, becoming the team’s starter in net. Previously, Phillips had also played for the Boston Aztecs of the Women’s Premier Soccer League in 2009.

Phillips also spent six years playing in the W-League for the Boston Renegades (2002-06) and the Atlanta Silverbacks (2008), where she went undefeated during the regular season and recorded shutouts in five of six games. In addition, she has national experience, playing on various

to helping coach the team on the field, she was responsible for scheduling and travel, summer camps and the team’s strength & conditioning program. Massengale also has volunteer coaching experience at San Francisco, North Carolina and Clemson.

In addition to her coaching experience on the soccer field, Massengale has also been an experienced strength & conditioning coach. She was the head strength & conditioning coach at San Francisco from 2004-06, creating and implementing all programs for each of USF’s 17 varsity sports. She also spent 2002-03 at Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning in Winchester, Mass., working with professional athletes from numerous organizations including the NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL and WNBA. She instructed athletes on speed and agility drills, conditioning and weight lifting.

Massengale has played on two professional women’s soccer teams. She played for the Boston Breakers of the Women’s United Soccer Association from 2001-03 and most recently played for FC Gold Pride of the Women’s Professional Soccer League in California’s Bay Area.

Massengale, a native of Yuba City, Calif., earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Clemson in 2000. She also has completed graduate work in Physical Education and Athletic Administration at Idaho State.

Phillips was a star keeper at Clemson, where she was a four-year starter from 2004-07. She holds the school’s record for most career saves with 326, including a single-season 119 in 2006 when she was named third-team All-America. She was a three-time All-Southeast region pick and threetime All-ACC selection, including first-team All-ACC in 2007. She ended her career with a 1.09 goals against average and 22 shutouts and helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in 2006. She graduated from Clemson with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in December 2008.

Phillips, who is a native of Peabody, Mass., was a high school soccer star at Milton Academy and on the club soccer circuit. She was the 2003 Gatorade Massachusetts High School Player of the Year and earned numerous All-America team honors.

NORTHEASTERN The Northeastern women’s soccer team looks to defend its CAA regular season championship and get back to the NCAA Tournament.

New head coach Tracey Leone inherits a team that returns 19 letterwinners and eight starters. She also has brought in an excellent recruiting class of seven. This season’s schedule sports some stiff competition as the Huskies will take on defending SEC champion South Carolina in the season opener.

NU will have five CAA games at home, including one against defending CAA champion UNC Wilmington on Oct. 22.

Sophomore forward Devin Petta, who is the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and on the Hermann Trophy Watch list, will look to top her recordsetting freshman year. Petta garnered a wealth of CAA accolades last season, including becoming the first player to ever receive Rookie and Player of the Year honors simultaneously.

Petta was also NU’s most efficient scorer, with 23 percent of her shots ending up as goals, tops on the Huskies. She also led the team with seven game-winning goals.

Petta will be joined at forward by a fellow former CAA Rookie of the Year and 2008 third-team All-American in junior Veronica Napoli, who has a career 17-8-42 line. The pair look to fill the void left by graduating co-captain Liza Rebello and to settle in as the top two scorers for an explosive Northeastern offense, as they both have led the Huskies in scoring in their respective careers. Combined, Petta and Napoli have scored 31 goals in just 55 games played.

The young group of forwards will be supported by sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir, a former Georgetown transfer who posted a 2-4-8 line in her first year with the the Huskies. Bianca Vecchiarello and Stefanie Raiola add experienced depth to the unit, as the pair appeared in at least nine games in 2009.

Senior and new co-captain Kristen Blake and junior Gabbi Jatkola lead a solid group in the midfield for the Huskies. Blake led NU midfielders with a 2-4-8 line in 2009. Jatkola notched two assists in her followup season to a 15-point campaign in 2008 that garnered her CAA All-Rookie and All-CAA third team honors. Kirby Anderson and Erin McGaffigan, who appeared in a combined 23 games last year, provide depth to the group. Both are experienced juniors who have contributed an assist each in their careers.

Leone’s first class of offensive recruits has a heavy focus on the midfield. Hillary Savoy, Taylor Skeffington, and Hannah O’Donnell will help to solidify the Huskies midfield. They bring versatility and postseason experience to the position. Savoy led her Winchester, Mass. high school team to a 33-0-3 record and League Championship in 2008 and 2009. O’Donnell was also part of a district champion team in high school.

Hanna Terry, the lone newcomer at the forward position, comes in as a transfer from Utah. Last year she started all 22 games and posted a 5-2-12 line in her freshman campaign, good for third on the Utes.

Her team reached the semifinals of the Mountain West Championship.

DEFENSE 7 Returning, 1 Lost, 3 Newcomers The Huskies’ most experienced unit is anchored by senior co-captains Tinna Nielsen and Lesley Condie. The pair started 14 and 18 games last year, respectively, each tallying one assist. The defenders, both in their second years of captaincy, will be joined in the backfield by sophomore Sandra Magnusdottir, who earned All-CAA Rookie and All-CAA second team honors in her freshman season. She has been named to the preseason All-CAA team. Her 4-4-12 line led all defenders and was fourth on the team.

Junior Kelly Matthews also returns, having started all 42 games since she arrived at NU. Despite playing from the midfield and the backfield, Matthews has an impressive career line of 6-3-15.

Laura Holmstedt also joins the backfield after seeing time as a forward in 2009. Holmstedt appeared in every game for the Huskies, making three starts. In limited action, she led NU with a .600 shot-on-goal percentage. Marcela Bedoya also moves from from forward to defender after seeing action in one game during her freshman campaign. Rounding out the unit is junior Georgina Kemp, who appeared in 17 games and made two starts in 2009.

Leone has brought in three freshmen defenders. Highly touted Cassidy Costa joins the Huskies after a decorated high school career which included two California section finals. Katie Zdankus, a converted midfielder, brings in league champion experience. Kylie Smith joins the Huskies as a transfer after a year at Bridgewater State.

GOALKEEPERS 3 Returning, 1 Lost, 0 Newcomers The netminders for NU are an inexperiened but talented group.

Sophomores Megan Penn and Michelle Sopko both saw time in their freshman campaigns in 2009, each appearing in one game and recording three saves. Penn recorded a tie in her lone appearance against Delaware, stopping all but one shot she saw. Senior Sarah Fylak returns to the Huskies after not competing in 2009. In her NU career, she has appeared in two games. All three keepers came into the program as highly touted recruits and look to make a signifciant impact this year.

NORTHEASTERN The Colonial Athletic Association Coming off the celebration of its 25th Anniversary in 200910, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically.

The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 200910, the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 28 teams in 15 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2010.

The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million.

The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2009-10, 20 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 32 student-athletes received All-America honors.

The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with a league-record six teams advancing to postseason play in 2009-10. Conference champion Old Dominion made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years and knocked off Notre Dame in the first round. Northeastern and William and Mary received berths in the NIT. VCU posted five straight victories and captured the CBI championship. Hofstra also took part in the CBI and George Mason played in the CIT. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team.

A league-record seven CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2009-10. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its first CAA championship since 1989. Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with VCU advancing to the third round. Towson took part in the WBI. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008,

boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997.

The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

Three women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship in five of the last eight years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary placed fifth nationally as a team in 2009 and had three runners earn All-America status. In the pool, George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished as the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at the 2010 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with Towson’s Meredith Budner. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 13 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the last eight Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling.

CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics.

Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs.

In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize.

John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences.

Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985.

Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001.

Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

NORTHEASTERN The 2009 season was full of hallmarks for the women’s soccer team.

The program finished with a 12-4-3 (7-1-3 CAA) record, captured its first-ever CAA regular season title and hosted its first conference tournament. Individually, the players garnered six Player/Rookie of the Week acknowledgments and 10 All-CAA honors, as well as a number of NSCAA and NEWISA accolades. Head coach Ed Matz was declared the 2009 CAA Coach of the Year and All-American freshman forward Devin Petta was named CAA Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year.

Northeastern opened its season in August, posting back-to-back shutouts as the Huskies won matches against Cincinnati and Longwood.

Northeastern continued its non-conference schedule with a trip to the Nike Invitation Tournament in Athens, Ga. There, the Huskies defeated ACC opponent Clemson before losing their first match of the season to #18 Georgia.

Co-captain Liza Rebello and Devin Petta were named to the All-Tournament team. By then, Petta’s phenomenal rookie season was already underway, as she had scored all four NU goals in the wins over Cincinnati and Clemson.

Northeastern finished its non-conference schedule with matches against New Hampshire, Boston University and Maine. The Huskies took 1-0 victories from UNH and BU, before losing 4-1 to the Black Bears in Orono, Maine.

The start of the CAA season came on Sept. 24, with Northeastern travelling to Philadelphia to take on Drexel. The Huskies won the match 4-1, after Devin Petta scored three goals in a combined time of 4:04.

Her three goals made for the fastest hat trick in program history, while the first and second, only 26 seconds apart, broke the record for the quickest two goals scored by an individual at Northeastern. The feat as a whole earned Petta local and national recognition, including an

appearance in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.”

The win in Philadelphia kicked off the Huskies’ best CAA regular season in program history. Northeastern went 6-1-2 in October and finished the regular season with a program-best 12-3-3 (7-1-3 CAA) record. The team’s only conference loss came in its visit to George Mason.

In the regular season’s finale, the Huskies routed first-place Hofstra to move into the CAA’s top spot and win the regular season title. It was the Huskies’ first regular season title, and the achievement earned them the right to host their first CAA Tournament at Parsons Field.

The Huskies were unbeaten at Parsons during the regular season, going 7-0-2 in nine games while outscoring their opponents 21-6. The Huskies entered the postseason with the secondmost points (101) and goals (35) in the CAA, having allowed only 20 goals in 18 games. Up to that point, the team had averaged 1.94 goals per game and posted an outstanding .750 win Kristen Blake percentage.

As the top seed, Northeastern drew fourthseeded James Madison for the semifinals of the CAA Tournament, though they knew they would be without Petta, who had sustained a season-ending injury in the final game of the regular season.

NU wound up losing to James Madison 3-1, which ended its season as they did not receive an at large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Northeastern was one of four teams in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s “Tournament 64 National Rankings” not to advance to the national tournament.

The season did conclude on a high note, as the CAA announced its 2009 honors. Ed Matz became the first soccer coach at Northeastern to receive the CAA’s Coach of the Year award.

Devin Petta was named the 2009 CAA Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, the first CAA women’s soccer player to receive both awards simultaneously. She is the first-ever in Northeastern program history to receive the Player of the Year award. In addition, Petta was named second-team All-America and first-team All-Mid-Atlantic region by the NSCAA, and first-team All-New England by NEWISA this season.

Her 35 points broke the long-standing Northeastern record for points in a season that Keri Irwin had set in 1996. Petta also matched the single-season goal and assist records, and her seven game-winning goals stand as the most in a Northeastern season, and only two shy of the program’s career benchmark (which Rebello holds at nine). Petta finished the regular season second in the nation is scoring among freshmen, and her points per game average (1.94) was 11th overall among Div. I players. Five Huskies were named All-CAA, All-Rookie and All-Tournament teams. Petta was the league’s only freshman to make the All-CAA first team, while freshman defender Sandra Magnusdottir was named second-team All-CAA, and junior midfielder Kristen Blake was named to the third-team. Both Petta and Magnusdottir made the All-Rookie team, and Magnusdottir and Liza Rebello were named to the CAA All-Tournament team.

In spite of the loss of co-captain Rebello, the large returning core of players, as well as next year’s incoming class should prove to be a strong foundation for a repeat of success in the coming season.
