Letter from the AD
Dear Friends of Northeastern Athletics, Thank you for taking the time to review our 2009-10 Annual Report of Athletics and Recreation. I hope you are inspired and excited by what you read in the following pages and that you remain committed to helping us achieve our goals of sustained excellence and positive student athlete experiences. This has been a year of innovation, academic and athletic achievements, difficult decisions, continued facilities updates and record setting performances. Our collective efforts are guided by our core values and motivated by our intent to align the mission of the Athletics Department with the mission of the University. As always, I want to refresh your memory about those important guideposts by listing our mission and values on the following page. The 2009-10 season saw our student athletes’ academic performance rise to a new level, as our overall GPA was 3.059. The demands of performing in a competitive academic and athletic environment consistently pose real challenges. Thanks to the support of our Faculty Athletic Representative, Prof. Fred Wiseman, former Director of Student Athlete Support Services, Lauren Desantis, and the entire staff of the Student Athlete Support Services department, our student athletes not only survived, they thrived. Northeastern is leading the way in student-athlete support through the innovative electronic delivery of lectures students missed due to game travel. You will read more about this exciting technology on page four of this report. Matthews Arena, the world’s most historic multipurpose athletic facility, celebrated its 100th Anniversary with a beautiful renovation that has created a fun environment for our students, alumni and athletes. It is a source of pride for all of Husky Nation and I encourage anyone that has not yet seen the renovations to come visit this fall; you won’t be disappointed. We are excited as well for our recent upgrade of the turf at Parsons Field. This improvement continues our momentum of facility upgrades and we believe Parsons is now one of the best surfaces in New England. Thanks to all our donors, corporate sponsors, parents, alumni, colleagues, coaches and student-athletes for making this a successful year. We raised almost $2.5 million from a record 2,047 donors in a year when we made a very difficult decision to discontinue our football program. Your love for Northeastern is evidenced by this result and I offer my sincere appreciation on behalf of the entire Northeastern community. The 2010-11 year has already begun and our teams will be on campus soon. Our student-athletes are well coached, talented and motivated to bring pride to Husky Nation, but they will need your continued support financially and as spectators. Please come cheer on our teams this year--your presence at the games means so much to our student-athletes and coaches. With your continued enthusiasm and financial support, our efforts to achieve sustained excellence across all our programs will be that much stronger. Enjoy the Annual Report and GO HUSKIES!

Donor Profiles
DR. HANK DATELLE ’64
DR. JIM CARISELLA ’73
Hank was named the 2007 Atlanta/Gwinnett County Business person of the year as the CEO of Cypress Care, a company started by his daughter and son. He is currently the primary investor and Chairman of the Board for Anduro Manufacturing, a company that specializes in BOPP/PP packaging for the seed and feed industry and boasts the highest bag production capacity in the Western world. He has been recognized and honored in Honduras and Costa Rica for his work in these nations.
Jim and his wife, Dianne, committed $500,000 to Northeastern track & field in 2007. Carisella’s support has enabled Husky student-athletes to compete at elite-level track & field competitions across the country while also increasing the coaching staff’s budget to recruit the top student-athletes in the world. The incoming freshman class of 2010 is one of the best in the history of Northeastern track & field and is a reflection of Jim’s commitment to the program.
In March 2010, Hank and his wife, Kathleen committed $100,000 to the men’s basketball program. This generous gift will be utilized to support and enhance student-athlete recruiting for many years to come. “I am a strong believer in the value of sport and the lessons it provides to young people,” said Datelle. “I also see Northeastern on the brink of global recognition for the dynamic work that is happening at my alma mater.”
“College track & field played a major role in my work ethic and perspective on business,” said Carisella. “Irwin Cohen was influential in my Northeastern experience and I wanted to give back in honor of him and the future of Northeastern’s success.”
Dr. Datelle has always had a passion for college athletics and has been involved in sports for his entire life. He grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut playing high school and CYO basketball and later attended Northeastern in 1959. During his first fall on campus, Datelle was recruited from an intramural team by the late Joe Zabilski to play on the freshman basketball team.
In regards to the program itself, Dr. Datelle added, “I feel basketball is a fantastic way to further the image and reputation of an institution. I also think it is very appropriate that this gift enables Northeastern basketball to advance to its goals of excellence. As a former basketball player and educator, I realize that successful athletics only helps the image and reputation of the university it represents. Peter Roby and the University administration are committed to this success, and I want to be a part of this. I hope my initiative will encourage other Alumni to contribute to our great institution.” Athletics Director Peter Roby also expressed his appreciation for Dr. Datelle’s generosity, “This extremely generous gift from Hank Datelle will enhance our basketball program and will serve as the foundation of our goal towards sustained excellence in basketball. All of us at Northeastern are grateful for Hank’s loyal commitment.”
A track & field standout and member of the Northeastern Hall of Fame, Carisella’s leadership during a sterling collegiate career under legendary track & field coach Irwin Cohen was the preface of a successful career in international entrepreneurship. Jim only lost one time in his tenure as a pole vaulter at Northeastern, and this appetite for success has served him well in his career.
Dr. Carisella’s post-graduate career began at Shell Development Company in Houston, Texas. An engineering entrepreneur and multiple business developer, the Wakefield, MA native serves as the founder and president of High Pressure Integrity, Inc. His company provides on-site technical specialist services and downhole solutions for the oil industry. “Jim is the foundation of Northeastern track & field’s recent recruiting success,” said head coach Sherman Hart. “Jim’s support has given our staff the resources to expand our recruiting efforts throughout the world. This type of recruiting is in alignment with the global goals of the institution.” “There’s a confidence factor in anything you do,” Jim said. “If you’re president of a company, chairman of the board or serving in the workforce, there’s a confidence factor we all have to have in terms of how we live our lives. Confidence is built on success. Success in track helped me feel I was the kind of person that could succeed later in life. I had confidence in what I was able to do and what I had done at Northeastern.

Coaching Profile
TRACEY LEONE
Head Coach - Women’s Soccer Northeastern University Athletics Director Peter Roby announced the hiring of Tracey Leone as the new women’s soccer head coach this past February. Leone comes to Northeastern a proven winner in her 19 years as both a collegiate and international coach and as a three-time national champion midfielder at North Carolina. Leone, who is the program’s third head coach since its inception in 1996, takes over a Northeastern team that has risen to the top of the Colonial Athletic Association in recent years. The Huskies won the 2008 CAA Championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and won their first-round game. In 2009, the Huskies were the class of the conference in the regular season, going 7-1-3 to take the regular season crown. “To say that we are thrilled to welcome a coach and person the quality of Tracey would be an understatement,” Roby said. “Tracey brings world class qualifications to our women’s soccer program and to Northeastern. We are excited for her and for our student-athletes.” Leone most recently spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard, where she teamed up with her husband and head coach, Ray Leone, to help lead the Crimson to back-to-back Ivy League championships in 2008 and ‘09. Harvard went 29-16-7 while Leone was in Cambridge. Including the stint at Harvard, Leone has spent 13 seasons coaching with her husband at multiple institutions. She was an assistant coach for Ray at Arizona State from 200506 and at Creighton from 1991-92. Leone left Creighton in 1993 to start Clemson’s women’s soccer program as head coach, and Ray joined her as assistant coach a year later. In the program’s first season, 1994, Leone guided the Tigers to an incredible 15-4-1 record, an NCAA Tournament appearance and a final ranking of 13 in the NSCAA
national poll. For her efforts, she was named the NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year. Leone went on to lead Clemson to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including trips to the quarterfinals in 1997 and ‘99. In total, she was 89-39-4 at Clemson, including four NCAA Tournament victories. Her Tigers were in the national rankings 57 consecutive weeks from 1994 to 1999. Between collegiate coaching positions, Leone brought her expertise to the international level, serving as the head coach for the United States Soccer Federation Under-19 women’s national team from 2000-03, winning a world championship in 2002, and then serving as an assistant coach to the U.S. women’s soccer national team during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, winning a gold medal. Leone’s playing career at North Carolina was nothing short of remarkable. A four-year letterwinner as a midfielder under legendary head coach Anson Dorrance, Leone helped lead the Tar Heels to national championships in 1986, ‘87 and ‘89 with a runner-up finish in 1985. She was a three-time NSCAA All-America second team selection and was also an All-College Cup honoree in 1987 and ‘89, taking Defensive MVP honors in ‘89. The Tracey Leone file • 19 years coaching experience, collegiate and international • 89-39-4 record as first-ever head coach at Clemson • Led Clemson to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances • Won gold medal as assistant coach of 2004 U.S. women’s soccer national team • First American to win world championship as both a head coach (2002) and a player (1991) • Three-time national champion and All-American as a midfielder at North Carolina

Community Service
The Huskies teams were very active during the 2009-10 season performing community service, both on campus and in the local Boston communities. Below is a list of some of the projects that Husky student-athletes partcipated in throughout the year: The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spent time at the Rafael Hernandez School in Boston to tutor and mentor elementary school students. Paws, the Huskies mascot, made appearances at the school, while the women’s hockey team ran a paint & skate program. The swimming & diving team taught lessons and coached practice at the Blackstone Community Center Every week, student-athletes volunteered for Husky Mondays at the Huntington YMCA. The students tutored, helped increase physical activity at open gym and participated in healthy snack time. Student-athletes visited Charlestown High School for weekly exercise programs in the pool during the afterschool program. Northeastern student-athletes volunteered with Sport in Society at the Red Auerbach Invitational Double Dutch and State Tournaments held at Solomon Court. Members of SAAC and the football team volunteered and cheered walkers on in the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks event in the fall. The women’s basketball team walked in the Brian Honan 5K, in honor of assistant coach Bill Carpenter, Stephen Carr , and others directly and indirectly affected by cancer. The team also held a free youth clinic prior to their home game verse Army. Participants were able to attend the basketball game and have kept in touch with the team.
The baseball team participated in the 1st Annual “Motivating Miles Melee” raising money for the Motivating Miles Foundation. Motivating Miles is a charitable organization created by former NU Husky, Caleb Ginsberg. The foundation raises money to grant customizable family “journeys” to people who are suffering from life threatening illnesses. Students at the Mather Elementary School in Dorchester spent time learning tips and scrimmaging with the help of the NU men’s soccer team. The men’s and women’s rowing programs volunteered their time this winter at the Community Rowing Adaptive Program, which provides opportunities for individuals with mental and physical disabilities to participate in the sport of rowing. The track & field program hosted 90 local elementary and middle school kids at White Stadium for a free clinic. The City of Boston Track & Field Clinic was held on school vacation week for city schools. It was held in Cabot and covered over 10 events in its 10th year with 150 participants. Members of SAAC raised more than $500 at a men’s basketball game to aid vicitims of the earthquake tragedy in Haiti. Student-athletes continued the second year of the Husky Wish Gift. They raised money through various student events in order to contribute to local charities and nonprofits in need. The field hockey, volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer teams were recognized for their outstanding team participation in SAAC events.

MATTHEWS ARENA
Northeastern University’s athletics department is committed to its student-athletes, staff and fans, and has taken the steps necessary to improve the Matthews Arena experience for all. The arena has undergone a three-month renovation that has tied in the history of the world’s first multipurpose arena with modern amenities that are necessary in today’s world. Below are a list of improvement’s made to the building: The men’s & women’s hockey locker rooms have been renovated into suites consisting of a locker room area, bathroom & shower area and lounge area. The men’s basketball team now has its own locker room adjacent to the Wentworth men’s hockey locker room on the north side of the building. Adjacent to the men’s & women’s hockey suites is the brand new strength & conditioning center with state-of-the-art equipment and a sports medicine room to allow studentathletes to train and receive treatment in the same area.
23-seat press box on the main level of the arena. The press box is equipped with both hard-wire and wireless Internet access and two high-definition LCD televisions with replay capability. Every seat in the arena has been replaced. Each balcony end has benches instead of seats to accomodate the growing number of students who come to the games and stand to cheer on the Huskies.
PARSONS FIELD
This summer, Parsons Field has undergone a turf replacement project. A new FieldTurf surface will be installed and ready in time for the start of the 2010 soccer seasons.
ROWING TANK IN CABOT CENTER
The winter training home of the men’s and women’s rowing programs received an aesthetic makeover with a significant cleaning and painting effort.
The building received a new roof, from which hangs a brand new videoboard over center ice that shows the game in progress, highlights, instant replay and other graphics. The public lobby underwent a facelift with new bathrooms and two new concession stands to accomodate the growing number of Huskies fans attending ice hockey and basketball games. The lobby is also now equipped with high definition LCD televisions that are tied into the videoboard and sound system, so that Huskies fans do not miss any of the action. Sun Life Frozen Fenway
New Hampshire 5, Northeastern 3 January 8, 2010 Fenway Park The No. 9 Northeastern Huskies fell to No. 4 New Hampshire on Jan. 8 by a score of 5-3 in the opening game of the Sun Life Frozen Fenway doubleheader, the first-ever outdoor women’s college hockey game. The Huskies held a 3-1 lead into the third period, but a four-goal rally by the Wildcats earned them the win. Huskies’ freshman Brittany Esposito scored two goals and senior Annie Hogan added two assists. The scene was picture perfect as snow cascaded down onto the sheet while Fenway Park served as an appropriate backdrop for such a historical event.
The two-goal advantage held into the third period, but UNH’s potent offense turned the tide of the game. The Wildcats reeled off four unanswered tallies in the third period to earn the 5-3 victory. Sophomore goaltender Florence Schelling made numerous point-blank saves en route to her 28-stop performance. “Florence is a great goaltender,” coach Linda Lundrigan said of Schelling after the game. “She was the difference for most of the game, we were outshot and we were winning.”
Esposito buried the first-ever goal in an outdoor women’s college hockey game at the 1:29 mark of the first while classmate Casey Pickett followed suit just 2:12 later. The two-goal advantage was shortlived, however, after UNH’s Shannon Sisk countered on an odd-man rush 18 seconds later. The Huskies built their lead back to two, 3-1, at 7:28 of the second. Hard work behind the cage by junior Kristi Kehoe and Hogan led to Esposito’s second tally of the night. Hogan provided the primary helper with a pretty feed to Esposito in front from directly behind the Wildcats’ cage.
