WELCOME TO GONERFEST 22!

We are so excited to have everyone out for four days of music and mayhem in Memphis. Whether it’s your first time or your twentieth, we’ve got a wild assortment of sounds that will make your eardrums happy and get your body in motion. Try to schedule some time to mix in some side trips to get barbecue, check out some Memphis landmarks, and hang out with friends both old and new.

Our new location means that even grizzled Gonerfest veterans have a new area to explore. We’ve got tips in this magazine on places to go and words of advice from people who know. The advertisers in here believe in this festival- please support them.

As always, it’s the people that make Gonerfest special, the people in the audience and the people in the bands - often one in the same! Please treat the festival and your fellow guests with respect, help each other out, and stay away from train tracks! Keep everyone’s safety and good times in mind and we’ll have a great time.

If you can’t make it to the shows, remember that you can watch the Gonerfest Livestream from the comfort of your home... or phone… for free! Also free: Our Sunday show at the Overton Park Shell! Come on out!

Thank you again for coming to Gonerfest, whether you’re coming from Germany, Australia, New Jersey, or Memphis. And the advertisers in these pages are big believers in the festival! GONERFEST 22: FREE THE STREAM!

We are again sharing our awesome lineup with all the people unable to come to Memphis to do this thing in person. The past few years’ streaming Gonerfest were huge, unexpected successes! However, running an “IN REAL LIFE” and online festival at the same time presents a whole bunch of new challenges. We’ve planned for months, took what we learned during the last few fests, procured some of the Mid-South’s top talents, and we’re ready to present Gonerfest 22 online in a way that captures the fun without killing the vibe! See all your favorites in the comfort of your own couch! In your pajamas, if you want! Drunk off your ass in the middle of the afternoon if you so desire! Chatting with Gonerfesters from around the globe at the same time. Great!

Scan the QR Code here to watch! We’ll be streaming earlier Gonerfest footage before we go live with the festival, and sneaking in peeks at earlier footage between bands all weekend.

Buy the stream team a beer! They deserve it! Look for more information on the livestream on how to donate to let our crazed crew know you appreciate them and help keep our livestream alive.

Streams will remain up on our site for one week so that people in different time zones can catch up, but then the only way to watch is via our Patreon subscriptions. Consider becoming a member!

WISEACRE

2783 BROAD AVE. MEMPHIS, TN 38112

Returning Gonerfesters might be surprised that the fest has moved from our previous host for the past few years, Railgarten. Unfortunately, that venue closed and left Gonerfest without a home... luckily the great folks at Wiseacre have stepped up and provided us with a fantastic space to host the event. it will be different than any previous Gonerfest! We’re in a whole new part of town and we’ll be visited by trains every once in a while. When we say “Bring earplugs,” it’s not just for the bands. The trains are LOUD! Get with it, the conductors are going to be having a blast along with the rest of us. Food trucks will provide you with grub but you are welcome to bring food back into the venue. Please, do not bring beverages into the venue. We will have water stations and plenty of beer, liquor, and non-alcoholic options for you. Please be patient with servers and staff- this is our first time holding Gonerfest at Wiseacre and there are bound to be some growing pains. These are long hot days and we are all in this together. Tip your servers, bring your best attitude, and enjoy the unique environs of Wiseacre.

ABOUT WISEACRE

Brothers Davin and Kellan Bartosch dreamed up WISEACRE many moons ago and have been on an extensive quest procuring top-notch experience from around the globe to deliver the crunkest brewery possible in their groovy hometown of Memphis, TN. The brewery name comes from a term of endearment/scolding their grandmother used on the young troublemakers. The Brewery’s Tiny Bomb has become the one of the best known hoppy Pilsners in the country - for a reason! It’s delicious! So is everything else Wiseacre creates.Wiseacre’s recent acquisition of Nashville’s Bearded Iris, another of Tennessee’s largest craft breweries, points towards an even bigger and better future for the brand.

TRANSPORTATION / PARKING

We recommend taking UBER, LYFT, or cabs to the venue. There is parking but it is limited. There is no parking behind the venue, park down Cumberland. If businesses are open please do not use their parking lots.

GONER

RECORDS @ WISEACRE

POP-UP RECORD STORE!

Quality record shopping is one of the many great things about any trip to Memphis - for those so inclined. So in addition to the great stuff we’ve got at the Goner Record Shop, this year we have created a popup Goner Store at Wiseacre with unique inventory we’ve pulled just for you! Rare Goner titles, Garage, Punk, Psych, and more. LPs, 45s, and CDs! We have Gonerfest posters from years gone by and hard-to-findhard to find releases. Last copies! Test presses! rock books! It’ll be special.

By no means does this mean you should skip the shop! We’ve loaded it full of new and great stuff of all genres — it’s packed full of greatness. Open Noon5pm during Gonerfest. Sometimes a little earlier or later.

AFTERPARTIES

AFTER THE GONER PARTY... THE AFTERPARTIES!

Bars with other shows include DKDC, B-Side, Hi Tone, and the Lamplighter. Look for schedules or go by word of mouth - some amazing bands are only appearing at the afterparties.

A big part of Gonerfests 1 through 16 was having visitors experience different venues around Memphis. The Hi Tone, Murphys, The Buccaneer, DKDC, and Memphis Made all hosted epic Gonerfests. Now that we’ve consolidated everything into one venue for the fest, these afterparties can get you into different spaces and meeting different people. We appreciate the effort that being a live venue demands... go check out some more Memphis spots and see more music!

24-CARAT BLACK

CULT CLASSICS FROM THE MEMPHIS UNDERGROUND

Although a playlist that fully captures this city’s strange sonic soul could fill hours, here are 10 personal favorites that always hit the spot….

Zuider Zee – “Haunter of the Darkness”

Power pop meets Lovecraft with a tasteful seasoning of glam.

DJ Spanish Fly - “Cement Shoes”

An ur-text of Memphis rap—murky, menacing, and timeless.

24-Carat Black – “Mother’s Day”

An ambitious soul requiem that plays like a funeral for the American dream.

The Memphis Goons – “See Her Face in the Mirror”

Ramshackle teen psych-punk with the charm of a haunted answering machine.

Clay Otis & the Dream Sheiks – “Disco Werewolf”

He left us too soon, but not before giving us the funkiest damn Halloween track in music history.

Lou Bond – “To the Establishment”

Seven minutes of righteous fury channeled through lush orchestrations and hypnotic scatting.

The Rock N Roll Trio- The Train Kept a Rollin’

A chaotic proto-proto-punk scorcher from one of rockabilly’s most raucous and raw groups.

Lost Sounds – “Ship of Monsters”

A short and savage synthpunk instrumental that exists somewhere between Bauhaus and Dick Dale.

James Cotton - “Cotton Crop Blues”

With all due respect to Mr. Cotton, it's Pat Hare’s searing, fuzz-drenched guitar that steals the show on this Sun classic.

Johnny Frierson – “Miracles”

Home recorded lo-fi gospel therapy that is as simplE as it is profound.

FAKE (MEMPHIS,

TN)

Real human Tim Prudhomme led real band FUCK through a string of great indie/guitar/pop albums in the late 90s/early 00s. Real band FAKE is Prudhomme’s (again, a real human) most recent project that finds him backed by Memphis top-tier players (and real humans) Keith Cooper (Jack O & Tennessee Tearjerkers, Model Zero, etc), Dustin Crops and Andrew Geraci.

EXBATS

(BISBEE, AZ)

Faves since their GF debut in 2018, our #1 father/daughter duo of rock history obsessives/disseminators

The Exbats return to dish out a healthy amount of celebratory rock goodness, drawing from a nowprolific five album discography that includes their two most recent albums on Goner, Now Where Were We (2021) and Song Machine (2023)

7:45

DARTS (SEATTLE, WA)

In less than a decade, this all-girl garage-punk crew from Seattle has released a sizable and alwaysgrowing discography, regularly sells out headlining gigs and rocks some of the best festival stages in Europe, and toured with heroes like The Damned. Having won the hearts of OG punks like Jello Biafra (who has released much of their output on Alternative Tentacles), Blag Dahlia and Dave Vanian of The Damned, the Darts are always in a state of perpetual motion and will have just completed their sixth album when they own the GF 22 big stage with some organ-driven insanity.

IBEX CLONE

(MEMPHIS, TN)

Memphis’ stars in the postpost postpunk arena, George’s blurry, wiggling chime guitar and vocals over Meredith & Alec’s rock-solid riddims doing the Chameleons, The Sound, and some other UK legends right. Goner recording artists ready for the big time.

9:30

PYLON REENACTMENT SOCIETY (ATHENS,

GA)

The impact of Pylon’s original ‘79 - ‘83 run on American post-punk/ alternative cannot be understated. Over two classic albums and three singles, their dancey, angular post-punk and proto-Ameri-jangle put them on stages with not only their close friends and neighbors R.E.M. and The B-52s, but also the Gang of Four, The Talking Heads, and P.I.L. Break-ups, reformations, reunion shows, lovingly-appointed reissues…all punctuated the coming years until the 2009 passing of founding guitarist, Randal Bewley. In 2014, founder and frontwoman Vanessa Briscoe Hay formed Pylon Reenactment Society with members of Athens, GA bands The Glands and Casper & The Cookies, among others. Much more than a tribute band, PRS makes music in the direct spirit of Pylon, while also reworking unreleased archival material. PRS has since released the six-song Part Time Punks Sessions 12” EP and “Messenger” / “Cliff Notes” 7” (both Chunklet Industries), a handful and digital singles, and saw their proper debut album (Magnet Factory) released last year on Strolling Bones Records.

LIGHTNING BOLT

(PROVIDENCE, RI)

Though they’ve been kicking for over three decades, it took until mid-to-late 00s for the world to catch up to Lightning Bolt, and that’s thanks in large part to their unforgettable live show. They would, and did, play anywhere. From your mom’s 20 sq ft mudroom to the surface of the sun, they jackhammered their bass + drums/vox insanity across a dizzying array of flat surfaces. The duo of Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson could be seen as the unofficial co-founders of Providence’s legendary 90s - 00s Fort Thunder (visual art/music/ refreshing craziness centered around RISD) scene and flagship band on that town’s Load Records; a prime mover of noise and the rock that came with it. Lightning Bolt moved to Thrill Jockey Records in 2015, where they have undeniably experienced one of those better-with-age things over the last decade. Say what you will, but being listed #8 in Metacritic’s Artist of the Decade 2000-2009 is worth noting.

MC 6-Midnight: TINA LUCCHESI (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) The legendary Tina of TINA!!!, Trashwomen, Tina & The Total Babes, Top Ten, and so many more bands will MC into the evening hours.

DJS 1-6: JON BERNHARDT (WMBR, CAMBRIDGE, MA) and 6-Midnight: DJ BIZZLE BLUEBLAND (WYXR, MEMPHIS, TN) It’s a battle of the community radio DJs - Memphis vs Cambridge. The winner is always the crowd.

Cincinnati garage/synth-punk quartet, records on Goodbye Boozy Records. & Feel It, garage punk plus infectious bonehead guitar riffs you can’t resist, fits in with the tidal surge that’s brought GEE TEE and TEE VEE REPAIRMANN to our fest in the past few years. Featuring Feel It head honcho Sam Richardson on bass!

PET MOSQUITO

(CARBONDALE, IL)

A road-dawging source of excellent ‘Midwest-forward’ (I dunno…felt right) garage-punk that should be nicely primed behind their first LP, Village Idiot; just dropped by chicago label What’s For Breakfast?...as well as an appropriate discography of couple of cassette titles (including Live At The Lamplighter) and last year’s Pre Apocalypse Motorcycle Music 7” EP on Slovenly Recordings.

LOTHARIO (MELBOURNE,

AUSTRALIA)

Self-described as “Bored, horny and getting dumber by the day”, Lothario is steered by Melbourne’s Annaliese Redlich. A wildly performative barrage of wire-brush guitars and a dearth of fucks to give, you will know the second Lothario hits the stage. Shit… even if you’re sitting at home.

This is exactly where post-punk should be in 2025. Lots of teeth, here. Nice mix of airtightness and imminent collapse. One min you can’t slip a sheet of paper between the bass and drums…the next sounds like the strings are hitting the floor. It’s as nasty as clean guitar can get…scraping and scratching at the insides of your ears. Carries the spirit (and perhaps a sonic trait or two) of the toughest, forward-thinking G.O.A.T. candidates in post-punk history…names like The Fall, The Pop Group, The Slits, Killing Joke and (especially) The EX.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

4:30

CHEAP FIX

(AUSTIN, TX)

Sort of a you-had-me-at-’James Arthur’s current band’ thing happening here. I mean, the man more or less responsible for Fireworks, Necessary Evils, James Arthur’s Manhunt and now this three-guitar assault on the senses…and sense. We’re talking one of the special few who can just look in the direction of 90s - 00s garage rock and turn into something essential, straight-up threatening and, it should be warned…deafening.

6:00

BLOODSHOT BILL

(MONTREAL, CANADA)

5:15

THE WHIFFS

(KANSAS CITY, MO)

For close to a decade, Kansas City MO’s The Whiffs have cranked out their reliably catchy, fuzzed up power-pop with a handful of releases, including the so-far discographical gem of an album, Scratch ‘n’ Sniff, on Dig! Records. The band has an EP and LP scheduled for release next year.

Wild-ass psychobilly machine, Goner roster superstar Bloodshot Bill and one of the only artists with a lifetime license to turn “My Music Is For Weirdos” into the greatest mission statement of all time. Just don’t send us the invoice when a consultant is needed to help navigate Bloodshot Bill’s daunting, quarter-century-&-running discography. Or do!! This year’s aptly-titled So Fed Up! LP is Canada’s finest at his moody-yet-razor-sharp best, marking his 4th for Goner and gazillionth overall!

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

PHOTO ANGEL-DELGADO-REYES

7:00

MICHAEL BEACH (MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA)

At a time when a year blows by like a minute, Melbourne’s Michael Beach has made the most of his time since GF 21, namely by completing the brand new Big Black Plume album for release by Goner earlier this summer. The album is a leveling-up exercise of the highest order, with a new sense of purpose that was announced but only hinted at with its two amazing singles (“The Sea” & “Poison Dart”).

8:00

OPTIC SINK (MEMPHIS, TN)

Natalie Hoffmann’s Optic Sink progressed into rarified territory via 2023’s Glass Blocks (Feel It) and the road work that has followed in its wake. Moving this along was the addition of Keith Cooper (Model Zero, Jack-O) to the permanent lineup, which helped to blow out the band’s sonic palette into something special while the songwriting has grown in tandem. A Memphis gem with a whole lot more going on than might be suggested by the trappings of “minimal synth punk”, with a more approachable warmth to the chill while retaining an intent that’s as serious as burning drapery.

8:45

TOMMY WRIGHT III

(MEMPHIS, TN)

A crucial force and groundbreaker in 90s Memphis Rap, Tommy Wright III was a D.I.Y. force of nature: Selfreleasing five solo albums and three more with the groups Ten Wanted Men and N.O.D., Wright made his mark with his own rapid-fire delivery, early Trap production techniques via analog Tascam 4-track, bedroom studios, Street Smart Records, and mentoring female collaborators like La Chat and Princess Loko (both, sadly, R.I.P.). Since reemerging in the late 2010s, Wright tours the world and has remained rather active, thanks to a massive cult following (that built gradually for years) and Memphis Rap of the 90s being the focus of mythic reexamination.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

9:30

TEE VEE

REPAIRMANN

(SYDNEY, AUS)

And here we have the final word on whether or not this Gonerfest goes down in egg-punk history as a landmark event (the answer is ‘100%’). Sydney’s Tee Vee Repairmann rules the one-man power-pop hook-tossing Tascam 488 MK-1 jockey…..corner of the movement with full length (no “studio” about it) living-roomrecorded album, 2023’s What’s On TV? thru Total Punk Records. Single on Goner coming, too!

10:30

W.I.T.C.H.

(ZAMBIA)

Now deservedly considered the G.O.A.T. of Zamrock, W.I.T.C.H. began during Zambia’s early 70s post-independence era and ruled the scene until economic and political turmoil gradually rendered such endeavors untenable by the mid-80s. Skip to the mid 00s when serious enthusiasm amongst heads over archival material culminated in reissues of the crucial 70s output and original band leader Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda’s invitation to the U.S. to restart the band. Rounded out by an international roster of backup musicians, they’ve been touring ever since. The first studio album of new material in 40 years, Zango, arrived in 2023 and has now been followed by this year’s Sogolo. Lastly, there’s no denying that “We Intend To Cause Havoc” is a great moment in the history of backronyms.

GOTOBEDS

(PITTSBURGH, PA)

Mesmerizing twin-guitar runs blow by on the edge of total collapse and every song has a giant hook, regardless of what kick they’re on with the primary influence, be it The Fall, Protomartyr, Jay Reatard, The Feelies, Sonic Youth, early Pavement or the Gotobeds themselves. The live show is transfixing. They should, and could, become a household name based on that alone but any random land in the discography is chindeep in greatness: Since 2009, the band has released four proper albums, a comp LP, some EPs - including 2017’s 6-song Definitely Not A Redd Kross EP - most of which courtesy of Sub Pop or 12XU. This year’s Masterclass album was released by the latter.

3:00

ERASER (PHILADELPHIA,

PA)

Set ten alarms. Do a cold plunge. Hit yourself with household objects. Just don’t miss the killer post-punk plied by Philly’s Eraser. Think Au Pairs/Liquid Liquid overseeing Y2K-era progeny like Erase Errata or the !!!/Outhud axis. The quartet will be darkening our door on their first national tour in the immediate wake of this year’s near-perfect debut LP, Hideout, on Siltbreeze. DES DEMONAS

(WASHINGTON, DC)

Led by six-and-a-half foot tall Kenyan singer Jacky Cougar Abok (also formerly drummed with Thee Lolitas and Gino & The Goons) and rounded out by rockers who have played with Kid Congo Powers, Medications, Deathfix, The Make-Up, Citygoats, and Benjy Ferree. Des Demonas mine all manner of historical punk gold with two full-length albums on In The Red and several EPs/singles scattered around since 2017.

5:15

SHARP PINS

(CHICAGO, IL)

Sharp Pins is the solo project of Kai Slater, also of the profile-ascending Lifeguard. Debut album, Radio DDR, was released earlier this year by K Records and garnered Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” designation. Sharp Pins is more a focus on songs than sonics and will melt those who love great underground guitar pop moments of yore like the C86, The Wipers, GBV, Jay Reatard, Flying Nun, etc. And he named his own label “Hallogallo Tapes.”

“Sharp Pins tingle and jingle and spangleacupuncture for the soul, threading a muchneeded shot of 1965 into the tired hide of today. Or you could just say they’re a crack in the sky where the sun shines through. Or you could just say they’re fab!” - Robyn Hitchcock

HYPOS

(ASHEVILLE, NC/MEMPHIS, TN)

Relatively new project sees GF pillar Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound, Oblivians, Compulsive Gamblers, etc) and Dr. Dog co-founder Scott McMicken (w/ 2023 debut on Anti- as Scott McMicken and THE EVER EXPANDING) combining their formidable songwriting talents and backed by Memphis and Asheville movers Evan Martin (drums), Kevin Williams (Bass/ keys) and Krista Wroten (violin). Self-titled (and self-released) debut album dropped earlier this year and it plays like a tour of rock history’s truly rarefied nooks and/or crannies.

6:00 ROBYN HITCHCOCK

(LONDON, UK)

After leading the Soft Boys through a then-misunderstood but now classic two-album run, Robyn Hitchcock wasted no time in launching one of the more prolific solo careers in the rather active world of 80s-90s UK alternative/jangle/post-punk. Beginning in 1981 with the LP Black Snake Diamond Roles, Hitchcock has released a staggering, nonstop discography of excellent albums since. A certified legend with more hooks and twisted ideas than anyone. We are honored to have him back to Gonerfest.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

7:45

SLEEVEENS

(NASHVILLE, TN / DUBLIN, IRELAND)

From after parties to the big stage then back again, Nashville’s Sleeveens return to deliver their crowd-fave mix of sweaty, gruff honesty and blazing street hooks. According to one-sheet lore, the seed was planted when leader Stef Murphy (of Dublin’s Count Vaseline/The Mighty Stef) met Stiff Little Fingers’ guitar tech Jamie Mechan (in…Nashville) and they were later joined by Ryan Sweeney (Cheap Time) and Eli Steele (Sweet Knives). Stiff Little Fingers’ guitar tech? Well…add “next best thing” to that. Rocking with passion on the back of last year’s excellent self-titled debut album on Dirtnap Records, latest 45 on Goner!

9:45

8:45

TINA!!!

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA)

Tina “Boom Boom” Lucchesi is an incredible force, and has played in many well-loved power-pop and garage bands, including The Trashwomen, Tina and the Total Babes, Bobbyteens, Deadly Weapons, The Glamour Pussies, and Top Ten. She brings the pure power pop sound in the spirit of Nikki Corvette, Paul Collins’ Beat, Donnie Denim and King Louie to Gonerfest, and we are thrilled to have her!

RADIOACTIVITY

(DENTON, TX)

Following The Marked Men’s nowlegendary run through the 00s, Jeff Burke moved to Japan and formed The Novice. When Burke moved back to Texas, Radioactivity became the next chapter with some help from members of Bad Sports, Mind Spiders, Wax Museums, and VIDEO. 2011’s s/t LP and 2015’s Silent Kill (both on Dirtnap Records) are wall-towall the hooks, riffs and velocity that made The Marked Men such an important participant in the garage-punk sweepstakes. Radioactivity’s set from eleven Gonerfests ago (yes, it was 2014) is burned in our memory as a standout, especially considering that it was not at all stopped when a guitar amp self-immolated in protest of TOO MUCH ROCK.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

11:00

SILKWORM

(MISSOULA, MT/SEATTLE, WA/CHICAGO, IL)

Silkworm is one of the great enigmas of 90s underground rock, though they were originally active well beyond the timeframe referenced and creative well beyond the stylistic boundaries implied. The band originated in Missoula, MO around-abouts 1985 as a heavy, industrial post-punk project Ein Heit, then decided to sound nothing like their name with a moniker change to Silkworm in 1987. What followed were long tenures in Seattle then Chicago, a sizable discography (much of it across Matador and Touch and Go Records), and a lot of road-dogging (sometimes with close friends like Pavement and Bedhead). This came to an end in 2005, when drummer Michael Dalquist tragically lost his life to vehicular homicide.

The surviving members of Silkworm - Tim Midyett (also of Gonerfest faves Mint Mile) and Andy Cohen - will be joined onstage by original co-founder/co-songwriter/second guitarist Joel R. L. Phelps, who departed the band in 1994 to release a run of devastatingly-powerful solo albums over the years. On drums will be Jeff Panall (also of Mint Mile and Jason Molina’s Songs:Ohia back in the day), while former Silkworm collaborator Matt Kadane (co-founder/co-guitarist of the aforementioned Bedhead) will be behind the keyboards.

GONERFEST SUNDAYS

Gonerfest is always something. But Sunday afternoon rings differently. By then, we’re fried, overwired, blitzed out, and hungover from too much sound, too much carousing, too much everything. And that’s when Eric and Zac give us something we didn’t know we needed. Not a jolt, not more chaos, but something that holds us together for a few more hours until the festival ends. As my friend Kathleen Murray says, Sundays are something to rally for.

Some years it’s like a wildfire. Like the years when the King Brothers and the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band tore up the Gazebo on the corner of Cooper and Young. Other times, it drifts like smoke. I’m talking about Reverend John Wilkins, who sang the gospel blues like he was born to it. After he passed, the Wilkins Sisters, composed of his daughters and granddaughters, stepped in to keep the flame alive. Aquarian Blood and their weird folk visions. R.L. Boyce, rest his soul, bringing the hill country with him.

Last year, Oneida, Ned Collette, Water Damage, and Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band closed things out at Railgarten on Sunday afternoon. Their music hung heavy in the air, humid and haunted, after heavy storms nearly washed out Jon Spencer a few nights before. Rain fell soft and slow. Nobody left. If anything, it felt even cozier that way.

This year, Sunday’s show moves to the Overton Park Shell—a gift. Built by the WPA in 1936, the Shell hosted Elvis Presley’s first paid gig in 1954, opening for Slim Whitman. Furry Lewis, Mavis Staples, Isaac Hayes, and Carl Perkins have all stood on that same stage. The city has tried to tear it down more than once,

for a theater, a parking lot, even a freeway. But the Shell has held on.

I’ve seen a lot there: Femi Kuti’s fervor, the trance blues of the North Mississippi Allstars, the joyful roar of the Reigning Sound. I saw Alex Chilton in ’85, backed by Jim Dickinson and Teenie Hodges in a ninja suit. Last spring, I witnessed Kraftwerk as they brought their robot dream to life under the canopy of the Shell, with the Old Forest as their cinematic backdrop.

From the desert blues of Tarwa N-Tniri to Nashville punks Snooper, who close the night, Gonerfest 22’s Grand Finale is guaranteed to be a mixed bag in the best way. In between, Dummy and Silver Synthetic do their thing, with MC Billups Allen tying the whole strange thread together. Bring your dog, your cooler, your folding chair, or don’t. The Shell’s got a bar, food trucks, benches, and a vast lawn for sprawling.

Take a moment to remember John Larkin, who fought for the Shell in the ’80s and ’90s and passed away on August 1. Soak up these last hours of Gonerfest. Give thanks for the music, the mayhem, the miracle of it all. Celebrate our survival. Safe travels. See you next year.

MC: BILLUPS ALLEN (MEMPHIS, TN) Our man in the spotlight gets switched from welcoming everyone to the festival on the first night to closing it down on the last.

DJs: Meredith Lones / Alec McIntyre (MEMPHIS, TN) FEARLESS IBEX CLONERS BRING UNPREDICTABLE POST MODERN SOUNDS FOR SUNDAY!

TARWA N-TINIRI

(OUARZAZATE, MOROCCO)

The genuinely special gift in our Sunday afternoon free grand finale lineup, Tarwa N-Tiniri is an all-Berber Moroccan desert blues quintet that formed in 2012, has released two studio albums, toured France and Norway, and played the Jerusalem Jazz Festival in 2023. One of this year’s wild cards that cannot be missed.

SILVER SYNTHETIC

(NEW ORLEANS, LA)

An ever pleasant reachback to GF 18, Silver Synthetic return in the immediate wake of this year’s sophomore Rosalie; a continuation of the band’s spot-on 70’s afternoon-rock and a shift to Brent Rademaker’s (of definite influence and spiritual forefathers Beachwood Sparks) Curation Records. If you think you didn’t need the musical midpoint betwixt American Beauty and Marquee Moon, that’s ok…everyone has a right to be wrong.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

7:30 DUMMY

(LOS ANGELES, CA)

Loving and seriously deep students of a real 90s underground; the stylistically-restless variety. L.A.’s Dummy addictively confuse the senses with an organic approach genre pluralism, and have been doing so since 2020 over two studio albums (both on Trouble In Mind), a full length remix album of the latter (in form true to their influences), and several singles/EPs (including one for Sub Pop).

Think of them as an amazing record collection disguised as a band or the other way around. Whichever one of those is a compliment.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

8:30

SNOOPER (NASHVILLE,

TN)

As it was with Snooper’s Gonerfest 18 debut and especially the following year’s Friday night set, this will be THEE band on everyone’s lips once their brand of visceral giddiness and always growing, always insane live show meets the perfect environment in the Overton Park Shell. There will be a lot happening on that stage. Lots to look at. Lots to dance to. Lots to laugh with. Expect a set heavy with new material from Snooper’s hotly-anticipated sophomore album, Worldwide (Third Man), which, with a release date of Oct 3rd, should be THE GF 22 merch bag staple.

BROAD AVENUE

This year there are a number of new options very close by Wiseacre, our venue for Thursday through Saturday’s events. Broad Avenue for the longest time was primarily known for Broadway Pizza and The Beer Joint. The Beer Joint was somehow open 24 hours a day, served two kinds of beer, and you’d get tossed out of there if you swore. Pretty much anything else seemed to be okay. It was a bewitchingly rough place, and unfortunately did not survive over the years to see the bright and shiny Broad Avenue of today. Broadway Pizza (2581 Broad Ave), however, is still with us, famous for its barbecue pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and wings, as well as an assortment of Elvis memorabilia. A great option for a bite if you want to get out of the fest for a second and stretch your legs. A little fancier are our friends at Non-Vintage, a wine bar & restaurant with a patio serving tapas & charcuterie boards. Fun small place and Goner friends!, great place to rest your ears and mind. And vintage clothing hounds should check out Blue Suede Vintage at the intersection of Hollywood and Broad.

More to check out on Broad

CITY & STATE

2625 BROAD AVE

Memphis’ first craft coffee shop, also a small boutiquey gift shop and patio,

SUGAR GHOST

2615 BROAD AVE

delicious ice cream, Bubble Tea, shakes, and sherbets in a very well-done cute shop.

THE COVE

2559 BROAD AVE

a nautical-themed bar- a lot of it from the fabled Anderton’s restaurant down Madison from Shangri-la Records before it was leveled - an excellent place for some liquor and intimate music. And Oysters!

MUDDY’S BAKE SHOP

2497 BROAD AVE

one of the best places to get cupcakes, cakes, and other sweet pastries in Memphis.

There are more shops and restaurants on Broad. Have fun exploring!

THINGS TO DO IN MEMPHIS

FIRST TIMER? REVISITING PLACES YOU’VE BEEN ON PREVIOUS VISITS? HAVE SOME TIME TO EXPLORE? PLANNING TO COME BACK? THESE ARE SOME LANDMARKS OF MEMPHIS MUSIC AND MEMPHIS HISTORY. WANDER AROUND, CHECK OUT THE CITY.

SUN STUDIO

706 UNION AVE

True American original Sam Phillips founded Sun in 1950. A year later, he produced Rocket 88 – the Jackie Brenston jam that, with the help of Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm, spawned this whole rock and roll thing. Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Little Milton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and countless others made their historic contributions thanks to Sun. Current tour guides include “drummer in all bands” Graham Winchester and brilliant singer songwriter Mark Edgar Stuart. Soak it up.

STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC

926 E. MCLEMORE AVE

A great museum created on the location of the original studio. A space where black, white, male and female musicians created music during heated times. It’s hard to comprehend the influence these studios had on American music. A trip to the museum sure can help. Otis Redding, Wendy Rene, Booker T. and the MG’s, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, and so many more recorded on this site, and their effects on history run deep. Isaac Hayes’ car spinning on a massive Lazy Susan is fun to watch and talks to you, too.

ROYAL STUDIOS

1320 WILLIE MITCHELL BLVD

Still an active studio- Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson cut part of “Uptown Funk” here – Royal was where Poppa Willie Mitchell cut Hi Records hits from Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, Otis Clay, and OV Wright, as well as his own killer instrumentals. Not set up for tours like Sun or Stax.

ARDENT STUDIO

2000

MADISON AVE

Yes, Big Star recorded their magical albums here! And drummer Jody Stephens, one of Memphis’ greatest ambassadors, is the current VP of Production. A legendary place for many, with Alex Chilton’s Like Flies On Sherbert, The Replacements Pleased To Meet Me, and ZZ Top’s Eliminator recorded there. Among many, many others! Not set up for tours. Hopefully in years to come we can again set up some walk-throughs for Gonerfesters!

Graceland

3717 ELVIS PRESLEY BLVD

Pushed out of his 1034 Audubon Dr. home due to an increasing need for privacy, Elvis settled down for the rest of his life in Memphis at Graceland; an expansive plot of land where myth, memory, and Elvis himself are interred. Never mind the kitsch and capitalist grip they have on his name-- what can be gleaned from his time on earth can be felt in the walls of Graceland.

Metal Museum

374 METAL MUSEUM DR

On the bluff of the Mississippi just south of Beale St. is the Country’s only museum dedicated to the fine art of decorative and conceptual metalwork. There’s a smithy on site and an excellent view of the river from the gazebo. Native American ceremonial mounds are right across the road.

Mississippi River

From the Greenbelt Park in Harbortown to the strange nooks and crannies behind the Church on the River, there are some spectacular places to enjoy a sunset on the Mississippi. Find a place to chill while you’re here, the Air BnB or Motel 6 can only do so much for the soul. This river is the whole reason Memphis is here. CHECK IT OUT! PS The northern “New” bridge is fixed and open. And lights up at night! The “Old Bridge” to the south has a killer walking path across to Arkansas.

Full Gospel Tabernacle

787 HALE RD.

Provided he’s in town, Reverend Al Green can rectify any wrongdoings that may have occurred while you were here. If you can stomach waking up on Sunday Morning, that is.

Jay Reatard’s Grave: Memorial Park Cemetery

5668 POPLAR AVE

Take a trip out east and pay homage to someone very special to the Goner name. Isaac Hayes is buried right next to him, and across the road is the bizarre Crystal Shrine Grotto. Hallowed grounds!

See also the cool Jay mural at South Main St & Vance downtown, a short walk from Central Station Hotel.

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN (AND AROUND) MEMPHIS

SHOULD A QUEST FOR THE MORE OBSCURE TICKLE YOUR FANCY, HERE’S A FEW PLACES TO GET YOU STARTED. THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS GIVE MEMPHIS THE GLIMMER IN THE DIAMOND OF ITS MAGIC.

Elvis’ First Grave: Forest Hill Midtown 1661 ELVIS PRESLEY BLVD

Before Elvis was interred at Graceland, he was alongside his mother at the haunting mausoleum in the back of Forrest Hill Midtown. Take the winding road past decadent monuments and through rolling hills to get to it. It remains an off-the-beaten-path holy space for Elvis fans and another mythic locale for his legendary life. Allegedly people would attempt to break into his grave here.

Furry Lewis’ Grave: Hollywood Cemetery 2012 HERNANDO RD

Behind Forrest Hill Midtown is the abandoned Hollywood cemetery. Despite its terrors, it is the final resting place for Walter “Furry” Lewis; Memphis Blues legend. His grave is difficult to find, but some online sleuthing and a keen eye can reveal his humble tombstone.

Charlie Feathers’ Grave: Forrest Hill South 2545 E. HOLMES RD

Any Rockabillies looking to pay their respects to their king can find him out past the airport in an unassuming branch of the Forrest Hill cemeteries. He’s in the back and on the right- ask the staff!

Chris Bell’s Grave: Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens

3700 NORTH GERMANTOWN PARKWAY

BARTLETT, TN 38133

The 27 Club has its famed members; Morrison, Joplin, Cobain...even Amy Winehouse. Fixed on that list is the lesser known (but more relevant??) Chris Bell-Big Star’s founding member and “I Am The Cosmos” singer. Ignore the mural on the side of Otherlands and pay respects at the above address. See also the Big Star tribute section of Mortimers Restaurant on Perkins if you’re a Big Star fanatic.

1331 MADISON AVE

Candles, cards, herbs, and incense. Cleanse yourself, you’ll need it.

Birthplace of Aretha Franklin

406 LUCY AVE

Though her family relocated to Detroit when she was two years old, Aretha Franklin was born here in Memphis; just down the street from what would become Stax Records (now the Stax Museum.) Man, what a neighborhood! The house still stands, barely. See it while you can.

Summer AveNUE

Restaurants, antique stores, thrift stores, and etc! Summer is an excellent example of Memphis business at its finest and a wonderful stretch to explore and discover. While Midtown homes flip and renovate, Summer Avenue mostly remains the same, incorporating new immigrants and Memphis natives in a great patchwork of trailer parks, liquor stores, import stores, thrift stores, antique stores, and more.

Southland Casino

550 NORTH INGRAM BLVD

WEST MEMPHIS, AR 72301

If rocking and rolling just doesn’t quite scratch your degenerate itch, take a trip to the casino! What used to be a dog racing track is now a full-fledged casino. Sammy Hagar’s restaurant is there, too. Enticing? Disgusting? Sure! Keep West Memphis West Memphis! It’s in Arkansas!

THANKS

FIRST OF ALL, THANKS FOR COMING TO GONERFEST! We appreciate the effort it takes to decide to come here, plan the trip, and actually do it! All the bad publicity Memphis gets, we are so happy to host all out of towners and provide some exciting, unique music for Memphians as well. We have made it to #22 with so much help and support from all the bands and fans and friends from Memphis and around the world. This one hasn’t been easy! Uprooting ourselves from the familiar confines of Railgarten made us question what the fest was about, what people come to Gonerfest for, and where would they enjoy themselves the most. Luckily we had a number of venues who offered their spots for our consideration when Railgarten was no longer an option. It was great indeed to know that other places had noticed what we do. However, once we started talking to Kellan Bartosch and his crew at Wiseacre, we knew we had a partner who definitely wanted Gonerfest to succeed. Add in Mike Smith and his crew from Mempho to hold our hands through the nuts and bolts of actually putting a festival together from scratch, and we knew we were onto something. Sure, there are trains, and whistles, and more trains. Time will tell how that went over. But the vibe from these people especially was so positive. We had a festival to put on, and it was going to happen! Thanks to Wiseacre, and Mempho, for making this festival happen. We could not have done it without you.

Big thanks again to Sara Moseley for the graphics and merch designs, as well as stage decorations and myriad other cool design choices. We look fabulous and it’s all because of you! Thanks to Kelly Jones at Custom Logos for

the cool enamel fish pins! You got a cool merch idea for us? Reach out!

Thanks to our Goner staff for working through all the ridiculous logistics Gonerfest creates, especially after staff shakeups put some new people in some new duties. Andrew McCalla has been in the trenches in Memphis and Austin and knows what workshis advice throughout has been invaluable and his ears and knowhow are why this festival sounds so good. Thanks also to Dustin Crops for the gear and sound advice. Dane Perugini and Billups Allen had to be more creative to cover jobs that opened up for this festival. Thanks always to Dan Holloway for handling the music industry wheeling and dealing so we don’t have to. Thanks again to Brent Shrewsbury for overseeing the Gonerfest Stream, a massive undertaking. Film industry folks, hire Brent! He does steadycam! Whipping together a professional crew on a flip-flop budget is only really possible because the people doing it want to be here- thanks to everyone who manned a camera, switched the stream, directed, or did graphics. We love being able to reach out and have a worldwide audience in real time! Thanks to Marsh Nabors, for the great online animations & graphics.. Thanks to Lensrentals for help with the video this year! If you need a/v gear for a short time, hit ‘em up! Like ZZ Top, they’re bad, they’re Nationwide.

Brandon Seavers at Memphis Record Pressing has much better things to do than get us out of jams but there he is, time and time again. And the tote bag design! Next level! An amazing local resource. Getting the GF Bonus 45 out required some international string-pulling by Brandon and Frank McLallenthanks for all you do. Thanks to all the bands who got us tracks for the record, even the ones we couldn’t fit on there. Thanks to Des

Demonas, Wesley & The Boys, TINA!!! and especially Bloodshot Bill who composed an original Gonerfest song in a day! Incredible!

Thanks again to Andrew Earles for the band descriptions, Corkey Sinks for program layout, and Karl Baioni at EM Printing, Every year these things just about kill us, but every year it’s worth it!

Thanks to all the DJs and MCs for adding their own flair to the proceedings and keeping it interesting from start to finish. Important jobs! Buy em drinks! Flatter their selections! Dance to their jams!

Thanks to Will Floyd for the backline & PA help. Thanks to Wes Youngblood for the lighting and advice. Thanks to Infinity Stairs for the insane light shows. Top notch stuff! Chris Rohling at Signs First provided the banners and epic signage for the fest... amazing!

Thanks to Central Station for again being our home base and hosting the Early Sign-In on Thursday, and thanks to Holiday Inn Express for also offering discounted rooms to Gonerfesters.. We know there’s a reason people come back year after year and it’s not just the great musicit’s the great people and the great atmosphere. Keep the fire burning! Thank You!

Please go back safely to where you came from and tell everyone you see that you had a great time. Hopefully we will see you again next year for Gonerfest 23. We have some new ideas and we’ve started talking to bands... hopefully foreign bands will still be able to come play small festivals. We shall see.

Stay safe and take care!

PS Railgarten is still for sale if anyone is interested in a viable Memphis venue in the heart of Midtown.
