December 2018 MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC
The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom. Let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - an increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’. Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

iddy up! Gee gee, another year comes to a close as we head into summer. Welcome to a packed summer issue of New Zealand’s gonatural magazine. In a time when newspapers and magazines are closing, we are heading into out 63rd year of continuous publication. This is an achievement the entire naturist community should be proud of. You might like to read a recent interview I had with StopPress who celebrate long-running publications that have managed to transition into the digital world without losing integrity. You can read the story here tinyurl.com/STOPPRESSgn2018 I often get asked why the mere act of being naked in a shared social environment is such a big deal. Look no further than our cover story. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make her drink, so goes the old proverb. Deborah took the plunge (literally) sharing her love of horses and writing and gave herself permission to try something she’d never dreamed of: stripping away her fears and her clothes, and allowed me to photograph the experience to share it with our readers. There’s something raw, organic and beautiful riding a horse bareback with no saddle. This year’s annual naturist festival and rally will take the form of a bus tour, taking in four naturist clubs around the North Island along the way. I received some touching feedback about Polly Fairbrother’s life in the September magazine. It was a powerful, sad, unique but important story to share. This issue we launch the 2019 gonatural photo competition with the theme of our summer campaign Love the Skin You’re In. You have until March to send in your photos, so get snapping - anyone can enter! See page 26 for details. Enjoy the summer, love the outdoors, appreciate your friends and embrace your naked self.
-Mike

Sad to know....no longer in book shop. It is not the way to promote nudism in NZ. Without your magazines on the bookshelves, new naturists won’t know much about it. I just share my story. I visited Sydney, Australia, I came across gonatural and other nudists magazines on the book shelves under the column “lifestyle”. Due to curiosity and interests, I bought all the naturist magazine back home to read. Slowly, I know much about nudism in NZ, Australia and other places. Without a hard copy, I cannot share with my new nudists friends. I used the hard copies to promote the naturist lifestyle. It is sad that we cannot see gonatural magazine on the book shelves from now. I always tell my Asia friends, going to Australia, which bookshop can get naturist magazines....Easily. It is a mustbuy magazine. - Tiger Yan, Singapore That’s what happens [stop selling in shops] when you publish naked children and promote it to a society that doesn’t understand. - Gene Dare, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Why stop selling gonatural magazine in bookshops? - That’s another means of getting naturism into the general arena. - Murray Brown, Nelson So sad I cannot get my magazine from my newsagent any more a bad decision from the publisher. - Sandra Dean, Tauranga [We stopped selling in shops because paying commissions and large freight costs have made it unprofitable to distribute, otherwise we could have been faced with ceasing publication altogether. Most people subscribe to directly via gonatural.co.nz] The day that everyone is legally allowed to go nude in newsagents and bookshops will be the day that it’d no longer be necessary to buy gonatural magazine. - Dario Western, Brisbane, Australia [Sharing our stories will always serve a purpose... to record, remember, celebrate, inform, educate and laugh. That’s what we have been doing for 62 years. -Editor] We found Polly’s story and her suicide [#246 Sept 2018] very challenging and at first surprised it was in a naturist
magazine, that celebrates life and our bodies. However it was a beautiful story about a wonderful woman. Thank you for sharing with us. - Margaret Westwood, Auckland I loved your article on Polly from Hawkes Bay. She must have been a delightful person. But what a sad sad ending. Thanks for such a sympathetic story. - Julie McCaw, Amberley You do a great job spreading the word of Naturism – it is truly a wonderful lifestyle. I’ll be sitting out in the sun and reading more gonatural mags. I bought a few back issues. - Marlene, Mount Maunganui I enjoy reading gonatural magazine in paperback and sharing the information with friends. - Richard Pearce, Ottawa, Ontario We love the gonatural magazine. We use the adverts for places to stay when traveling in your beautiful country. - Neil Turner, Clifton Hill, Australia Now that summer is approaching, the fake scientists and big pharma apologists are at it again, exhorting people to stay out of the sun. This time with the even more incredible storyline that young people are having less melanoma than older people. Well older people also have more wrinkles than young people, more of every condition than young people in fact. What a stupid proposition! Vitamin D renders a lot of big pharma’s expensive products useless. There’s a war against Vitamin D of which the sun is the most prolific and free provider. I have not heard of a young person getting a melanoma but I hear of a lot of older people getting them. After the best part of 30 years of promoting high-sugar, low-fat diets, the ‘experts’ have now flipflopped to the opposite – the realisation that sugar is a primary driver of cancer as well as obesity, diabetes, heart disease. Older people have now had a lifetime of exposure of the low-fat, highsugar doctrine, now the price is being paid. Fructose in sugar is poisonous to humans when in pure form. In fruit it is balanced with enzymes and fibre but in concentrated form in convenience foods, it is the most dangerous. -Mike Ward, Rangiora
