“I love the feeling of the ocean water tingling on my buttocks as it dries off in the warm summer sun”

“Who cares whether that’s a sexual thing to say or not? Not me. Are you afraid of sharing thoughts like that with others as a naturist? Are you afraid of sensuality or being called out as ‘sexual’? Do you find naturist gatherings unpleasant because you feel like you can’t be yourself due to constant policing from others around you? Senior Sergeant Noel Bigwood of Otaki, announced last month that police planned to target offensive behaviour at the [Peka Peka] beach. Making an example of a couple of offenders would hopefully “stop other beach users having anything shoved in their face”. - DOMINION POST APRIL 6, 2011

The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom. Let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - an increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’. Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

ON OUR COVER

S

pring has sprung, and winter is behind us. Now’s the time for a clean out at home, and your mind and body, to get ready for summer. September marks 125 years since New Zealand became the first self-governing country to give women the vote: Jacinda Ardern is our prime minister, Patsy Reddy is our governor general and Donna Miller is the president of the New Zealand Naturist Federation. In this issue, I’m privileged to share Polly Fairbrother’s story about her community, love for naturism and a life cut too short. Mental health and suicide statistics in our country are alarmingly high, and it’s important and okay to talk about this now, so we can be open and honest about helping those who we love. We need to be kind to others, ask and listen. We are introducing some changes to make gonatural magazine more economical and sustainable for the future. For 62 years our magazine has been posted to subscribers and also distributed to newsagents and bookshops. The cost of distribution to shops in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, has increasingly become more expensive. The NZNF often deemed this as a marketing benefit to the wider community, but we can no longer justify nor afford it. The only way to get gonatural magazine now is via gonatural.co.nz (one-off or annual subscription). You can get the printed copy or a digital version. 21 years ago, the September 1997 issue (#162) was the first magazine since the mid-1950s where nipples and genitals had to be hidden on the cover in part due to censorship required by Australian shops. Then-editor Les Olsen deemed it was too expensive to produce a different cover for our local audience in New Zealand. It was a big decision at the time and went against our core values that the naked human body should not be censored. Therefore, because we will not be selling our magazine via shops, no longer will we need to censor what we publish on our magazine cover. Also, from this issue, we’ve added an additional four pages, achieved from printing economies (now 48 pages, includes cover). I look forward to your wonderful stories and photos. Stay healthy, happy and naked...

I love it because I go to bed naked all the time and I think it’s cool to sleep naked without the pyjamas crawling up your leg and getting too hot to. I found that I sleep a lot cooler at night in the summer and I also like my natural pyjamas I was born with! - Billy McDonald. Florida, USA I have been attending the Canterbury Free Beach swims for a couple of years. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of this group; couples, families with children, young and old. It was a friendly and comfortable environment. Families with children and most couples have since left (why?), possibly for the same reason I have stopped attending. The once friendly and comfortable environment has changed and become for me (and possibly for those people that left) uncomfortable. I will not be renewing my membership. I find the letter [#245 June 2018] from Volker offensive. He complains about people labelling him, but he has no hesitation in labelling everyone else. If Volker wants to wear a dress now, after all this time, it would have been less confronting for some people, if he had explained why he has, after all this time, chosen to wear a dress. People are naturally curious about things that are outside their environment or understanding. I have found if you explain to people they can be very accepting of a situation. But vilifying them and labelling them is offensive and does not lead to acceptance. - Wendy Mercer, Ashburton I’ve just read the appalling, archaic opinion of Jesse Laila, Christchurch towards homosexuality and thus withdrawing their subscription [letters #245]. My view of that person’s ignorance is to take out my first subscription! Here’s to a world for all filled with love. - Dale Trott, Frenchville, QLD, Australia Being merely naked (in public) is not illegal in New Zealand. Intending to offend is illegal, but forensically the word ‘offence’ means to “arouse feeling of anger, disgust or outrage” in the mind of a reasonable person. So being naked ‘in a place where it is known to occur,’ is not illegal according to Superintendent Graham Thomas, head of the Police

Prosecution Service (in 2000).Although a council can pass any by-law it likes, if it is not ‘in line with’ the general law of the land it is ultra vires and therefore struck down by a court. In 2002 there was a ‘community meeting’ among the council beach-goers and police. The Papamoa police have been patrolling the dunes behind the beach and the beach-goers on the sand are very appreciative. Except in the case of adverse weather, Free Beaches has asked users to avoid setting up anywhere other than on the sand below the dune edge, due to the complaints which being in the dunes generates. See freebeaches.org.nz/papamoa (and other items on that site, which relate to both the health and legal aspects). - John Lowe, Free Beaches NZ A small group of us did a nude photo shoot for a photographer in Richmond Road, West Lynn recently, great experience bit cold but no complaints or visits from Mr Plod as we were naked for only a very short time and the few passers by and dog walkers were bemused to see nude people at the bus stop and crossing the road. I got a beautiful smile from a lady as I crossed back to collect my clothes so great experience all round and there could be more photo opportunities in the future although we could do with a few more ladies no matter what age or shape and size. - Dave Melville, Avondale, Auckland US law must be weird, I’ve opened my door, work in my garden, repair my vehicles, always naked on hot days. There is a warning sign at the gate: ‘DO NOT ENTER the property if you are gonna be a prude’. In NZ our law says we can be naked on the street, as long as it’s not exhibitionist or sexual behaviour, lewd or crude. - Murray Brown, Nelson The prudish and Talibanic laws of the US scared of the human body! How old is this country [USA]? Are delivery people calling the police if a woman answers the door with a naked baby? They whole country is so retarded, the human body is not a sexual object unless you make it one! - Brazil H. Rivera, Nordkær, Denmark
