iwi naturists should be immensly proud of our gonatural magazine - now in it’s 62nd year of continuous publication. As printed newspapers close or get reduced to a fraction of their former glory, magazines are still growing and prosperous. In a more digital age, a magazine offers indepth life stories and a journal to share and display. As winter is upon us as the June issue of gonatural arrives in your hands. I dug out this photo (above) from 2015 when we visited Mount Sunday in the South Island high country - a stunning remote place made famous from the Lord of the Rings movies. Colin and I braved the snow and ice in the spirit of naked madness! The mighty Southen Alps are truely majestic at this time of year. This edition celebrates three special naturist couples: Marie and Mark’s life in the Bay of Plenty is about living, loving and breathing, naturally. Life-long naturists, Debbie and Larry Linzer from Texas, USA share observations of their recent adventure exploring nude Zealand. Jeff Norman takes his notepad and camera and spends a day with Don and Minca, caretakers of New Zealand’s largest naturist club. John and Anne take us to their beautiful retreat deep in the Kaimai Ranges for the annual summer camp at Ngatuhoa Lodge. It’s a magical place. Professor Dr Pamela von Hurst of Massey University’s Vitamin D Research Centre, talks about why getting outside to bare some skin is important, even during the winter. In that spirit, naked gardening day was a hit in May, but the move to the first Saturday in November for us Kiwis, will encourage more to strip off and weed. This year’s national naturist rally will be something very different, that will include a bus journey taking in four naturist clubs - a first of it’s kind! I’m hoping you will not feel too disturbed by this. The reason for this letter is I’m feeling disappointed by the Autumn Farm advert, then saw that there was an article [#244 March 2018]. I don’t feel comfortable with the promotion of homosexuality. Regardless that it is legal, and socially acceptable, the Bible says that both male and female homosexuality is abnormal, so I don’t feel I would feel comfortable renewing my subscription. I do not endorse homosexuality. Also there was a letter [from Bob & Debbie Turlington] stated that nudity is not approved of in the Bible, this is wrong. - Jesse Laila, Christchurch We have been a regular reader of gonatural magazine for some time and always look forward to the variety of stories and the wonderful photos. - Joan and Barry, Manawatu East I have been a regular at the fantastic Free Beach NZ swim nights in a warm pool in Christchurch for a long time. Recently I wore a dress on my way in. I’m a man. Why did I do this? Actually, that’s completely irrelevant (and you’d be wise not to make assumptions about it). Am I allowed to wear a dress? What do you think? My friends and I certainly think so. But then the Free Beach NZ committee contacted me to say that some members have made a complaint against me — for wearing a dress. A man in a dress is “unexpected, a culture-shock, off-putting to visitors, and not family-friendly”. And so, the committee asks, would I consider “wearing normal clothes so the problem goes away”. I find that offensive. It’s gender discrimination and sexist. There’s at least one transgender member in the pool, who also finds it highly offensive — it’s transphobic. Will that member rejoin next year? Wearing a dress is family friendly. The age and gender profile in the pool is not. What better opportunity than a man in a dress to explain to children the meaning of tolerance, acceptance, and being non-judgemental and openminded? Aren’t naturist groups founded on these values? Naturists ask society to be open-minded and respect them, their lifestyle, and their choice of clothing. Complaining about someone
else’s choice of clothing is extremely ypocritical, especially when that clothing comes off as soon as I’m inside. So far I’ve had no indication that I will get any support, or even a response, from the committee (maybe it’s still in the works). In contrast, the support from my friends has been swift and unequivocal, especially from those in their 20s who are naturists. They will not put up with this. In fact, it is this bigotry that drives young people away, not men in dresses. This is a wake-up call. What are elderlyheavy committees going to do about it? - Volker, Christchurch What a great photo of us in the magazine [#234 March 2018]. At first I wanted you to use a different photo that you took of Martin and myself. I didn’t think it would be so good! Thanks Mike. - Wilma Kermer, Invercargill I notice when nudist stories are published by news organisations, the online comments are often vitriolic, mean, confused or just plain shameful about the natural human body. Why? - Heather Hope, Sydney Terribly sad news [that Polly Fairbrother passed suddenly.] She was an amazing individual with a kind heart. We met Polly at the first mass nude photo shoot at Breaker Bay and instantly become friends. We both belonged to an exclusive club that no parent volunteers to join, that being the loss of a child. We have enjoyed many, sometimes lively, discussions ever since that day. We will miss that. And we will miss her smile and creativity. If I think about going to a group with that belief or to a group that embraces nudity, I know which makes me feel safer.
