“Nudism has nothing to do with ‘how you look’... it’s all about how you feel - and it feels great!”

PUBLISHED SINCE 1956

December 2017

MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC

from the editor

The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom...let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - Being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - An increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - Experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’ Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

NZ’s natural hot pools naked secrets revealed

A

s editor, I feel priviledged to meet some amazing people and help share their stories. This edition is testament to that. The months leading to summer are always the most uplifting, heralding the start of outdoor pursuits and adventures. After a very wet winter in most parts of New Zealand, spring has delivered some record high temperatures, which bodes well for a long summer ahead. The NZ Naturist Federation will promote ‘LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN’ campaign during gonatural week from 20th January. Read Donna’s inspiring story on page 8. There’s so much to do this holiday season. The LOVE annual naturist festival is in Wellington where THE the ‘Te Marua Pioneer Village’ will come to life. SKIN The rally committee have been busy for the YOU’RE last year preparing a packed week of nudie Summer 20 18 IN delights from BBQs, casino, comedy, outdoor movies, a great range of music, dinners and a full sports programme. This is a real highlight on the naturist calendar and I look forward to seeing you there. Besides the rally, there’s Ngatuhoa Naturist annual camp; Nude Golf International at Wai-Natur; Autumn Farm’s 24th annual summer camp over New Year and naked men’s week in midJanuary. Auckland Outdoor will host the popular Oranui Games, and Waikato’s Mini Rally over Waitangi weekend. Check out all these events and others on page 41. Also inside, meet some brave women who have faced breast cancer; read about Trevor and Christine’s nautical life; an Aussie adventure, and learn about Miniten. I’m delighted to present our cover story about NZ’s thermal hot springs, many which invite naked bathing experiences like you’ve only dreamt about. Grab Sally Jackson’s guidebook and set out on a unique adventure and explore a part of New Zealand you’re missing out on! Don’t forget to send me your holiday stories and photos. Happy holidays!

l spend a lot of time totally naked and love it. As a pubescent youth, I loved to go nude and would sneak out at night totally naked to enjoy the night air on my skin. I went on long walks down streets late at night with nobody about. It just happened. I thought I was the only person in the world that felt that way. When I reached puberty my love was to wear a skimpy little g-string I made myself. On holiday l went walking along a beach, a long empty beach on the west coast, there I met a man who was fishing and he was nude. That was the first time I went total naked in company. I splashed in the surf, had my photo taken holding a large fish and later lighting the fire that cooked it. I was still a boy looking back. I have been a nudist from that experience all my life. - Murray Wakeman, Otorohanga

We have a new scheme in the UK to encourage people to talk about naturism outside of our community. We hope to inspire those who do not talk about their lifestyle choice to tell just one person. It’s called Just One Person: tinyurl.com/JustOnePersonUK Many people don’t even know they know a naturist and assume that we are still that fringe minority but we’re their next-door neighbours, their work colleagues, the people on the next table in the pub…everywhere. While it remains hidden, misguided and incorrect views of naturism will continue. The more that people know about naturism, the better things will be. We want to escape from the association that nudity means sex, or even worse, perversion. There is scientific evidence that we’re on to something. Why stay quiet about that? - Nick Caunt, Freckleton, Lancashire, UK

We would like to introduce ourselves as the new owners of Savannah Park Nudist Retreat on the Capricorn Coast of Queensland Australia. We took possession of our property in October and would like to advise readers of gonatural magazine. All services remain the same and available. Give us a call on +617 49250135 and say hi. savannahpark@gmail.com - Buck and Ally, Queensland, Australia

We sincerely enjoyed reading Bruce and Marguerite’s story in the [Sept 2017] gonatural. What a joyious, packed and happy life they have lived and are still living, nude! It’s inspired us as we are now about to retire to ‘just do it’ and explore and live to the fullest. They are shining examples of what a healthy naturist attitude is all about! - Simon and Mary H, Pukerua Bay, Wellington

I think I may have mentioned being a naturist to more than one person already. There’s a sign outside my house, anyone who knows me on Facebook, work colleagues who’ve seen my number plate surround while waiting for coffee outside work, but ok, I’ll mention it to (at least) one more. On the flip-side, I know plenty of naturists who would be honestly mortified if anyone outside of the sun club found out. They fear judgement, job repercussions, being shamed, and so on. It speaks partly of themselves but also a lot of the people they (believe) they are surrounded by in their lives in my (most humble) opinion. The sun club I’m a member of even has the tag-line “Our Natural Secret” which, personally speaking, I despise. To me, personally, it’s no secret, and I think the whole idea of secrecy is so lacking in self-esteem it may as well be “Our Dirty Little Secret” - I’m sure that’s how some of the folk there see it. - Trevor Shanahan, Rotorua So there I was at our local transfer station (new age name for rubbish dump/tip) and the attendant guy enquired “You’re Brent aren’t you?”. I admitted I was, and he commented he recognised me from the cover of gonatural magazine [#241 June 2017]. Apparently there’s nudies everywhere, hiding in plain sight, wearing clothes! - Brent Lewis, Ngunguru, New Zealand

Free Beaches are organising a day visit to Auckland’s Motutapu Island Sunday January 21st. It’s very different from Rangitoto, and much quieter, with good beaches and walking tracks - opportunities to be naked in nature. If you are interested, please email me rick@edale.nz - Rick Dowling, Auckland We’ve been managing Katikati Naturist Park for one year now and what a roller coaster it has been! Hard work but inspiring at the same time. To celebrate we are organising a small anniversary celebration. We look forward to seeing you all for a great evening. Join us Saturday Dec 9th, 6pm. BYO Barbie & drinks. Join us for a great weekend and come visit us over the summer! - Tom & Ami, katikati-naturist-park.co.nz Regarding the story and photos about ‘The Urban Nudist’ [Sept 2017] gonatural, I have to ask is this a good thing? I mean a man walking around in public wearing no clothes is shocking and just seems silly. Why oh why? - Harry Davidson, South Auckland During the summer months, we organise walks. Christchurch Free Beach members are welcome. Walks are followed by a (byo) picnic lunch: Waimairi Beach; Barkers Brook, Brooklands Lagoon; Hobsons Bay, Taylors Mistake. Car pooling can be organised. Call 027 235 9978 if you are interested.
