MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom...let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - Being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - An increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - Experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’ Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

t’s winter across New Zealand / Aotearoa - the land of the long white cloud. As the majestic landscapes across our small but beautiful country, and the mountains become cloaked in snow, it’s often time to retreat inside next to a cosy log fire and strip off. However Waikato model Jaylene Cook undertook a 5-hour trek to the top of Mt Taranaki and captured a special naked photo, but not everyone was pleased! It opened a debate that some believed was offensive, even though that was not her intent. How anyone can find the natural body offensive, is offensive in itself, don’t you think? The Winter Solstice this year will be at 4:24pm on Wednesday, 21 June. How will you celebrate it? How about arranging a photograph of yourself and friends outdoors and send it to gonatural? I’ll publish a selection in our September edition. Be creative and let’s share your winter snaps, wherever you may be. Brent and his friends talk about their nautical adventures in this issue, along with some wonderful photographs - I’m sure you will be inspired. I also spent an afternoon with Murray Stewart on the Kapiti Coast, photographing and talking about his creative and musical journey. Daniel Copeland writes again for gonatural about the ethics and etiquette of nudity in a thoughtprovoking commentary that challenges our ideas. There’s also some wonderful photos of the World Naked Bike Ride held in Golden Bay. On a sad note, Les Olsen’s partner Laurel passed away, who was loved throughout our naturist community. Les, an honorary Life Member of the NZNF, served as editor of gonatural for 10 years from 1995-2005, and both were members of the Auckland Outdoor Naturist Club for many years. Our thoughts are with Les and his family.

editor@gonatural.co.nz We were very impressed with the stories and wonderful photos about families in gonatural magazine [March 2017]. Some might have said it was too much, but we were delighted to see and hear the stories of everyday New Zealanders sharing their honest values about nudity within their families. Congratulations to all those who participated, it was really important to show others that being naked, especially around children, is normal and okay, and even healthy for the values it teaches. - Vivian Sampson & Family, Blenheim I recently came across your magazine at a friend’s home, and became fascinated with being socially naked, and it sparked thoughts from my childhood that I rarely acted on. Over the years I have visited nude beaches and when I have the house to myself, always strip off. It is something that as I get older, I really want to explore and learn to drop my cares with my pants! Thanks for your great mag, it’s inspiring people like me to get back to nature when I see real everyday Kiwis just doing it! - Harriet K, Dunedin It’s a perennial item of discussion these days - how do we get the youth back into the clubs? I think Chris Pester has made a wonderful start with the recent youth campout held at Taranaki. Initially I thought the age range was possibly a bit wide - but the reaction of those there suggests to me that the range is certainly workable. I note that occasional gonatural articles have featured young children; and I think several clubs (Rotota and AONC) have family members with children. Maybe the two Federation VPs could make a point of following up on these leads for future invitations?) The main change I’d like to see (as does Chris, I know) is an earlier (warmer!) time of the year - but maybe not during the Christmas holidays, because as previously noted, the kids of single mums are often off with their dads or other family members at that time. Another, more or less related issue: how to take advantage of the event in terms of offering or encouraging the use of the clubs to further the experience, locally. Perhaps clubs could be canvassed for their interest, or not; in special invites or occasions for any new people that are likely to ‘pop up’.) Should that be a viable option, the ideal could possibly be to try to coordinate any club offerings with potential future local campouts; once Taranaki’s events are established as ‘serial successes.’ Finally, my personal thanks to Chris and the Taranaki members for a great time, great food and a great inaugural campout event indeed like the kids, I though it was ‘just the greatest!’ - John Lowe, Hastings
I’ve started a fundraiser where, on my 30th birthday, I’m going to jump out of an airplane nude and skydive playing the violin at 15,000 feet. This birthday dive in my birthday suit will set a Guinness World Record for the Highest Musical Performance in free-fall, and I’m going to post the video to social media. I’m baring my body because in 2013 I had a mental breakdown over my classical music career in London. I was playing in the London Symphony Orchestra on an amazing viola from the Royal Academy of Music’s iconic instrument collection, but for ten years straight I was silently sucking in my tummy 24/7 after one day at age 18 a fellow musician pointed to my tummy and said it was looking ‘tubby’. An instant body shame grew inside me like a tumour, and after ten years of what became a default tension in my body, I had devastating performance anxiety on the musical stage. At the peak of my career I ended it all and came back home with my tail between my legs. In a place of desperation I radically decided to start living life on MY terms. I discovered nude swimming in the ocean and social nudity as the *only* way to start loosening up the physical and mental tensions that were gripping my body, and reverse ten years of what prevented me from even being able to change in front of other guys in the male dressing room before concerts! I found a tool to finally overcome the tensions that were ruining my career and now I want to help others. I’ve moved mountains inside me and now I want to do it to the world. Help me move mountains for other people. Thanks to the toxic culture around media, entertainment, fashion, and porn, our young people are hating their bodies more than ever, with the numbers for women in the UK as high as 91%. But the statistic that should be way more alarming and isn’t being addressed, is men - males are four times more likely than females to go undiagnosed and suffer psychologically as a result! We need to do something about this silent epidemic. It’s bullshit, and we need to change things. If you think this project is important. gofundme.com/BirthdayDive - Glen Donnelly, Gosford, NSW, Australia I have heard that some naturist clubs are considering or currently have the authority to undertake a Police check for new members. I have mixed feelings about this, however when you book a hotel, you have to give your car registration and credit card details for security, and working around children, even in schools, now requires a police check. So I wonder how we approach this with prospective members and visitors? Of course, only those with convictions appear on a register, but nothing can replace getting to know and talking with new members. - Damien Clifton, Waipukurau

Just wanted to say that the photography in Gonatural is first rate. I’m an amateur photographer and I enjoy capturing my family to record for posterity, so I want to acknowledge how valuable it is to have a magazine the records and shares stories about our way of life. We should be very proud to have a national magazine like this in New Zealand, and I know you have subscribers overseas. - Johnny and Deb G, Manukau, Sth Auckland
At the World Naked Bike Ride in Kent, UK, a bloke got told to leave because of get “aroused”. I don’t believe the incident handled very well at all. It may well have a been a genuine case of the unwanted erection in which case the poor guy would have been feeling pretty stink anyway. To treat him like a sex offender is a bit over the top. Unless of course there are things we don’t know about leading to this occurring. - Blair Hinton, Lower Hutt
