from the editor This summer 2016 issue of gonatural is significant for a number of reasons. It comes out to coincide with the 35th World Congress of Naturism in Wellington, a milestone for our country hosting an important fixture on the global naturist calendar. This year also makes the 60th continuous year in print for the New Zealand Naturist Federation’s national magazine. This is a tremendous achievement for all those who have contributed since the early pioneering naturist journalism in 1956. Very few countries still boast a national magazine to share news and record stories of our lives. Along with the UK’s H+E magazine, now in its 116th year, New Zealand’s gonatural stands tall on its achievement. Inside there’s a special feature by 46 naturist leaders across New Zealand, from different backgrounds and ages, who all have their own view of where we’re at. It makes for compelling reading. The winners of the INF photo competition have been decided. Massey University’s veterinary students have stripped off for a good cause. The endearing Peter and Rodney share their personal story, as does Julie McCaw, who along with her late husband Hugh, shared a life’s love of naturism together. Daniel Copeland explains why men must own the ‘free the nipple’ campaign. Mike Ward shares his insightful view of the future. There’s a fun story from Kiwis and their love of petanque on the Mediterranean. You’ll find our packed summer calendar on the inside back cover. She changed in the bathroom with the door shut. - Dante, West Freehold, New Jersey We are supposed to be living in an enlightened society. I am sure there are gay people in every strata of every country on this planet of ours. I remember the story of the famous plastic surgeon Dr Macindoe who looked after the many badly burned airmen during World War 2. He would only hire gay (male) nurses to look after the airmen, as they displayed the greatest compassion for these airmen and they in turn felt confident in the hands of these nurses. I really enjoyed reading the article by Glen Donnelly. For a 29-year-old, he is a smart cookie. Everything he says is so true and is so where the world needs to see naturism heading. - Peter Woods, Rotorua I am one of the very few bloggers/naturist advocates that uses my real name. At my work I would say 99% of the 120 employees know I’m a naturist and also know I go skinny dipping on my lunch break in Summer! Even the female boss knows, she just rolls her eyes when the subject comes up and she says “I don’t want to know.” If more people ‘came out’ we would no longer be marginalised. - Michael Connolly, Blue Mountains, Sydney Congratulations from a first-time reader and potential nudist for the on-the-button stories from Marina Grace and Kris Williams [Sept 2016] - inspiring and what nudity should be about. Disappointing to read letters engaging about the acceptability or not of gay or lesbian nudists. This sort of sexualising of nudity is not relevant. What interests me most about nakedness is that it’s a level playing field, where props such as alluring clothes and false notions of modesty, don’t count. The unique person, the inner being, is much more important and significant in terms of attraction. I’m sure in the nude world, the masks would fall off with greater emphasise on what really matters: the being inside. There would be many more happy relationships. - Paul Baber, Aramoho, Whanganui I have just come back from the Central Coast, Australia and spotted NZ gonatural magazine in a bookshop! Good publicity. - Julie McCaw, Christchurch I attended a recent open day at the nudist club at Rolleston, near Christchurch. I was disgusted seeing naked people walking around, mainly men. I went to visit and see the place after it was advertised in the local community newspaper. While I was there, I talked to Christine (a previous president of the “club” she told me), and agreed with me that there should not be naked people, in particular men, walking around, when there was children visiting. She told me it was an “unwritten rule” that members would stay clothed on open days to make visitors feel comfortable. - Sally B, Darfield/West Melton [Why did you go to a naturist open day? -Ed.]

Was there too much about gays in the March issue of gonatural? Statistically 5-7% of people are LGBT so two pages in each issue is about right. I noticed a one page article and one sixth of a page advert after Murray’s letter. If there was any other content about gays, I didn’t see it. I have only met the editor once and don’t agree with every opinion expressed in the magazine, but as far as I can see, the main thing the editor seems to be supporting is to promote naturism as natural, inclusive and non-judgmental. - Jeff Norman, West Auckland
19 I have always wondered why there is not a more diverse age range within the nudist community? I heard there once was more families involved years gone by. I suspect that many enjoy naked living at home without the confines of structured organisations. My son and daughter, now in their late teens, have been bought up in a open non-judgemental home environment and feel very relaxed towards any form of undress.
