From the editor Stewart Ransom edited New Zealand’s first national naturist magazine 60 years ago. ‘From the tiny acorn grows the Michael Moore mighty oak,’ he wrote in May 1956. “It is not intended to be pretentious or ambitious at this stage and hence these pages are purposely brief.

The Minister of Justice and his Department is not prepared to accept nudist magazines because many of the illustrations are not a true representation of our activities. We cannot argue with this point of view and our hands are tied to a large extent until this situation is improved. While we have proposals to endeavour to combat this position, the important step is to completely eliminate the offending type of illustration.”

We’ve come a long way since those conservative days and New Zealand now embraces one of the most progressive and accepting social environments in the world. We should celebrate this, as we generally enjoy an intelligent legal interoperation of public nudity in our law and more than often, when there was no intention to offend, the legal system has supported naturists and their right to be naked. Nevertheless, there are still some who want to equate healthy natural nudity with unrelated, even illegal behaviour, and this needs the challenging and education via the media. I have dedicated some space in this edition to our media and the important role they can play in advancing our lives.

Every naturist needs to help in this cause. It’s only when we stand up to bigotry, misinformation and intolerance, that we all become a better and more respectful society for us all, no matter our colour, status, job, creed, sexuality, or age.

It was such a refreshing read to see this in a mainstream naturist magazine. Great stuff!

Really enjoy your honest open approach, perspectives, connection with current events and trends, and especially your article on the decline in nudity. We sailed to New Zealand this year from the USA and were delighted to finally arrive someplace where nudism isn’t a huge cultural taboo, as it is in most of the South Pacific. We’re enjoying New Zealand’s naturist beaches and sun clubs, though they are often empty and typically challenging to visit in terms of finding them, connecting with someone to get gate pass info. The Fiji article neglected to mention that the culture there generally does not welcome nudism.

Bare Necessities cruise must have worked hard to streamline their passenger’s visit.

We are planning on sailing to Fiji this April and regret we will likely only be able skinny dip if we’re sure no locals will see us do so.

-Mike Ward, Free Beach NZ Most important is the subject on the front cover: a male! [Dec 2015]. The Dec 1974 cover featured an adult with four kids. This was the first issue not to feature a female on the cover, with John Gilmour as editor.

Sales for this particular issue dropped so dramatically that he was forced to sack himself as editor. This was also the first issue on sale in Australia after Customs had finally admitted uncensored versions

of Playboy and Penthouse, so how much of sales drop was due just to the lack of [an] attractive female on the cover is still a bit uncertain. However, the general consensus is - no female on the cover; not so many public sales!

Aussie Police target males for “wilful exposure”

Queensland, Australia Police in Noosa have been engaged in an ongoing campaign of prosecuting only male naturists for “wilful exposure” at Alexandria Bay, despite having been an unofficial clothing-optional beach for 70 years. The beach has also hosted an annual Nude Olympics for 30 years.

A spate of at least half a dozen prosecutions has recently begun with Police confirming that only males will be prosecuted, because only male genitalia “hangs out.” Not only has a police prosecutor confirmed this sexist policy to a Sunshine Coast Daily. This ongoing policy of Noosa Police is comically sexist, ignoring the existence of the female labia and clitoris, and repeated reference in the Queensland Summary Offences Act 2005, which states to “his or her genitalia.”

International nude photo competition Photographers are invited to enter the International Photographic Competition in conjunction with the 2016 International Congress of Naturism in Wellington this November. “The theme is health and well-being in naturism, showing nudity in the true spirit, as a naturally acceptable and therapeutic way of life,” Donna Miller says. “Photos must depict naturism as non-sexual social nudity.” Competition runs to 31st August 2016 Registration and model release form available www. congress.nznf.nz/media/photographic-competition. Honorary Life Membership awarded to Kay Hannam

Kay Hannam has been awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the New Zealand Naturist Federation.

President Wendy Lowe presented the certificate on board the Marlborough nude cruise in February.

“You have served the naturist movement in New Zealand for many years in many ways,” Wendy Lowe said of Kay’s contribution. “Most recently as editor of gonatural magazine for the last 9 years.” Kay now is helping organise the World Congress of Naturism in New Zealand in November.

Naked cyclists, north and south The balmy late summer weather has seen naked cyclists out and about. In February Nick Lowe was cycling between Havelock and Blenheim. In 2009 a woman complained after seeing him cycling nude in Upper Hutt. He was charged and convicted but on appeal in the High Court, where he won. Justice Clifford said at the time that Lowe’s nakedness had not met the test of offensive behaviour, and he quashed the conviction and fine.

In the Hawkes Bay, a Taradale man was spotted cycling naked heading on Seafield Road.

Local police said it depended on the circumstances, but said there had to be intent for the nudity to be offensive for it be a punishable offence.

Famous Roman nude statues were covered for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visit to Rome’s Capitoline Museums. “This is shameful, covering nude statues for a foreign visitor is equivalent to cultural suicide," locals said.

Controversial Nelson artist sells nude “Eleutheria” painted by Nelson’s Nikki Romney, sold to a Christchurch buyer.

“The painting won a national award last year, was written about in the paper, and it’s been one of the main conversation pieces in our small gallery,” Nikki said.

“So very sad to see it go. It was a concept that was a few months in the planning and thinking... and took three months to paint. I know the work will be talked about and appreciated. Nikki Romney’s work combines technical quality with contemporary flair. A naked relationship with the media The media can make odd bedfellows with naturists, however they’re an invaluable partner in education we can’t live without in a modern society, writes Michael Moore.

“Ok... nudist camps are fine if you are into it... but a judge at a nudist camp!?

If you were a paedophile you would hope you got that judge!” said Garth McVicar of the Sensible Sentencing Trust law-and-order advocacy group in a press release. He laid a complaint with Judicial Complaints Commissioner.

“The public outrage was not so much about nudism in general but the appropriateness of the Judge’s actions [appearing in nude photos at a naturist club]. “People are asking if this Judge’s behaviour is likely to impede his ability to carry out his role as a gate-keeper for society and to set standards the rest of us are expected to abide by.”

who hold public jobs. This stands out as odd departure from the usual positive press. Most journalists have a good understanding the law, defended the right to strip off so long as it doesn’t offend. This climate of acceptance has a lot to do with a more liberal, mature and progressive attitude in our society.

In New Zealand, that may surprise many, there is no law against nudity, and therefore, no clothing optional or nudist beaches are mandated. Any beach is acceptable to go au naturel, so long as there’s no intent to offend.

Common sense should prevail and a respect for the majority. This situation is in stark contrast to our Australian neighbours, who, like the debate for marriage equality, are still fighting for a legal nudist beach in the sunshine state of Queensland.

The response to the story about a judge overwhelmingly positive. TV3’s Paul Henry was outraged when Garth McVicar of Sensible Sentencing said “someone who is sexually lenient, liberal, like a naturist, would be more likely to side with a sexual offender.” “It’s highly offensive [to say that]. There’s no moral issue if you’re a nudist,” said Paul Henry.

If we don’t help our media in a way that benefits the wider public by education, then opportunists will present their counter argument. The recent news about a naturist who had a high-profile job, dominated some media, however naturists thrive on the equality they create when they share social activities together, where job and status are irrelevant. l

e can’t live with them, and we can’t live without them, so goes the age old saying.

In September’s gonatural I wrote that local nudist organisations like Free Beach and naturist clubs, need to actively engage with their local TV, newspapers and radio, if they want to have a positive relationship with their community and grow membership. This proactive engagement will also help educate local journalists and create a healthy respect and understanding for naturist activities and values.

Former editor of Australia’s TAN magazine Les Rootsey, acknowledges the vital importance of telling our story. “Most naturist groups relegate public relations to the least important item in their planning and budget.

Most businesses achieve success with advertising and promotion,” he said. “The media fall over themselves whenever the word ‘nude’ is mentioned.”

In New Zealand naturists generally enjoy a mature relationship with the media. Following the expose of a judge’s naturist life, Radio NZ observed the media seem very interested in stories about nudists, but asked “are they really news?” It’s largely newspapers and TV who love to delve in the naked world, deriving valuable online ‘clickbait’ as it’s called. Nudity still divides, engages, excites and even infuriates the puritans.

The infamous Dunedin Nude Blacks, annual naked bike rides and mid-winter nude swims, all garner a respectful and active following by reporters.

In recent months, journalists have been clambering over nudist stories, from those sending naked photos online; attracting younger people into naturism, naked cyclists; artists painting full frontal nudity; and TV reporters stripping off a naturist clubs. Most recently a witch-hunt trying to shame some nudists

Even a judge of the Court can stand naked Being pictured naked is not the same as acting in an indecent or offensive manner.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a naturist, or a member of a club of naturists, says Professor of Law Andrew Geddis of Otago University.

here is nothing wrong with being naked. Even if you are a Judge.

Recently, some newspapers have run a “shock! horror!” series of stories about a Judge who happens to be a member of a naturist / nudist club and had some naked photos of himself posted on their website.

A few things to note about this “story” before we go on. First, the photos were used by the club without the judge’s express per-mission (although apparently the club’s membership form includes a generic permission to use photos of members for its purposes). So it’s not as if the judge in question sought to somehow set out to exhibit himself to the entire world. Second, the photos were on the club’s “photo gallery” page, which requires a viewer to click-through from its home page to view. Claims that they were somehow used to “publicise” the club are thus a bit of an exaggeration.

And finally, the newspaper story tells us that they showed the judge “posing on a grass lawn” and “playing petanque”.

When you realise that “posing” means “standing with some others”, there is no suggestion that they depict disreputable or questionable behaviour. Indeed, they show what late-middle aged people do with their friends all over the country... just that this individual prefers to do it

without clothes on. Nevertheless, the Herald on Sunday “broke” the story and then a follow-up article reporting that “a judicial watchdog is investigating a complaint about the judge’s conduct.

I think it’s time to put a stake through this particular “story’s” heart. Because there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a naturist, or a member of a club of naturists. Nothing. At. All. Even if you are a judge. Simply being naked around other people (including children) in a non-public place, is not against the law. Indeed, being naked around other people in a public place is not necessarily illegal, but is a more complex question, particularly when children are involved.

Nor is there anything immoral or disreputable about naturism as a lifestyle choice. Here’s how Helen Mirren puts it: “I’m a naturist at heart. I love being on beaches where everyone is naked. Ugly people, beautiful people, old people, whatever. It’s so unisexual and so liberating.”

Is anyone going to seriously argue that Helen Mirren is wrong or morally dubious in her views? Helen Mirren? I didn’t think so!

Indeed, we positively celebrate forms of naturism in our New Zealand culture. The infamous Dunedin “nude blacks” regularly play tests against visiting teams before the main fame kicks off. Thousands of people watch them do so. And we all think it is a fine old jape.

So who on earth could have a problem with a judge wanting to join with others who prefer not to wear clothes, even if the club then chooses (without his express knowledge or agreement) to put up photos of him doing so in a section of its website where the public might (if they really go digging) see them? Who would think this behaviour

so terrible that they complain to the Judicial Conduct Commissioner about the judge “adversely affecting the standing of the judiciary and undermining public confidence ‘especially in the hearing of sex crimes, public indecency cases and the exposure of minors to pornography’.”?

Well, I think the Herald answers that question. Because [former MP] Rodney Hide makes a whole lot of claims about why there’s something terribly wrong with the judge’s actions.

I won’t go through Hide’s column in detail because, you know, nonsense ... but there’s a couple of fish in the barrel that demand shooting.

First up, Hide sanctimoniously asks: “How then does he sit in judgment on sex cases, public indecency charges, or rule on the acceptability of pornography to minors? To make a concrete example: how can he preside in judgment over a man accused of exposing himself to children? Isn’t that exactly what he has done?”

The answer to the general question is simple. Being pictured naked is not the same as acting in an indecent or offensive manner. To get all logical, the fact that (some) sexual offences involve nudity does not mean that all forms of nudity involve a sexual offence. You may as well say that a judge’s membership of a boxing club (along with public photos of a judge sparring in the ring) means that the judge cannot sit in judgment on cases involving assault, fighting in public or intentional injury. Or a judge who drives rally cars in her spare time (and has appeared in the paper behind the wheel of her powerful race car) is unable to judge in cases of dangerous driving, street racing or sustained loss of traction.

And to answer Hide’s concrete example, no. No, he hasn’t. Anyone before the judge “accused of exposing himself to children” will either be there on charges of “offensive behaviour” or committing an “ indecent act”, either in a “public place” or any place “with the intention to insult or offend”.

The former “offensive behaviour” charge requires nudity in a public place where unsuspecting/unconsenting children may be present. The judge was at a private club, with any children present brought there by their parents

in full knowledge of what naturism involves. The latter charges require an indecent act. And simply being naked is not “indecent”.

Once again, it would be like someone who has smashed a stranger in the face outside a bar at 3am complaining that the judge on the case can’t decide it because he boxes against others with gloves and headgear, in a ring with a referee overseeing proceedings.

Because really it’s just the same thing, isn’t it!

So ... nonsense. Clearly. And note that, despite the Herald’s claim that the judge is now being “investigated”, means very little in practice. Anyone can make such a complaint. And, yes, the Judicial Conduct Commissioner then has to investigate it - before potentially dismissing it or taking no further action in respect of it.

There’s one huge, jaw-droppingly brazen bit of rank hypocrisy in Hide’s column that I really cannot allow to pass by without comment. Hide opens his case against the judge in question with this claim: “The fiction is judges are beyond reproach. They preside with great solemnity and dignity and make a great play of the pomp and circumstance - all of which evaporates once you have seen this unfortunate fellow in his birthday suit, block and tackle on display. For me, that is impossible to respect and his dignity is gone.”

Just remember that the person writing these words, whilst he was an elected member of the House of Representatives and so part of the supreme lawmaking body of the country, positively chose to dress as one of Snow White’s dwarfs. And then he expected me to respect the laws that he voted into existence, after seeing him dressed like that?

Nudity and the law in New Zealand It is not against the law to be naked anywhere in New Zealand. However, it is illegal to be naked with the intention of being obscene or of causing offence.

In cases of public nakedness. the Police go to the Summary Offences Act 1981: • S27 Obscene/Indecent exposure Obscenity requires some element of lewdness or lasciviousness, so this charge is regarded as inappropriate for a case of mere nakedness.

• S4 Offensive behaviour The Ceramalus case of 91 (an appeal to the High Court won) determined that the legal definition of ‘offensive’ was not met by mere nakedness (even in the presence of school children), in a place where nudity was ‘not uncommon’ or ‘known to occur’.

• S4 Disorderly behaviour The Ceramalus case of 1995 (appeal to the High Court lost, appeal to the Court of Appeal declined) indicates that ‘the street’ is not a place where nakedness is known to occur.

So that’s why it cannot always be specified that you can or can’t go naked (ie: be forensically ‘disorderly’).

In your own backyard, for instance, if a neighbour decides to take offence and call the police, they may well ‘act.’ In general though, District Court judges in these cases tend to follow ‘expectation’, tested with the evidential reaction of those around.

Having said that though, there is a forceful argument worthy of note. In 1990 New Zealand enacted a statute to affirm recognition of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; which both declare the human person to have inherent dignity and worth. That statute is the Bill of Rights Act. That ‘dignity and worth’ obviously must apply to the complete human person – if it is not the whole person, it is meaningless. Therefore no part of the being which has inherent dignity and worth, can be rationally determined to be an attack on society. No mere part of a human form can rationally ‘offend’ or ‘disorder’ the average reasonable person – as conflated with the Bill of Rights. If that average reasonable person [under the Bill of Rights Act]; is not offended or disordered, a reaction that is inconsistent with that now defined norm, must be forensically unreasonable and thus disregarded.

• Local body/Council/Authority Any ByLaw can be enacted, but it cannot impose a penalty greater than that of statute.

Since there is no statue law forbidding nudity, no penalty should apply. However, since the present situation is that current ‘case law’ rules, the fact that mere nakedness is legal ‘in a place where it is known to occur’ or ‘is not uncommon’ also means that no penalty can apply – as there is plenty of evidence that nudity is ‘known to occur’ at “X Beach.”

Keith & Sarah’s Kiwi odyssey What started with a family holiday to the other side of the world seven years ago, has become an obsession for British couple Sarah and Keith Forward.

“T

here we were at the very top of New Zealand, at the beautiful Cape Reinga Lighthouse with my mum and dad, and Keith decided to get his kit off for a photo,” Sarah said.

“He’s just like that. That was my mum in the background as I took the photo, so we were just lucky no one else was around.”

bringing together their two families. Keith had visited the South Hants Naturist Country Club and nudist beaches in Spain and France, so it wasn’t long before naturism was a shared passion and a way to enjoy travelling.

We discovered New Zealand by accident, looking for somewhere different to travel and visit, and always heard lovely things,” Keith said. “From a UK point of view,

most people think Australia and New Zealand very alike, but it’s not until you get here, you realise they’re poles apart,” said Keith. “When we first travelled here, we decided to find a naturist club to stay in, although the kids were not keen at first, but they had such a great time and the people were wonderful and friendly, so it was easy to convince them as we travelled around New Zealand.”

On the top of Mt Sunday, site from Lord of the Rings Keith and Sarah are not only a delightful outgoing couple that enjoy life and the spirit of friendship, but are positive genuine people who represent all that is good about naturists.

“My children are now 12, 15 and 17, and I can say, especially with Lex, being open about nudity and experiencing it with us, as young girls always are shy about their body image, this has improved her selfconfidence wonderfully,” Sarah said.

“As we travelled around New Zealand on that very first trip, I guess we started to really appreciate the kindness and friendships we made with naturists and how open and welcoming they were,” Keith said. “On every return trip, it wasn’t like we were leaving home, as we felt we had so many genuine friends in New Zealand. It has become so wonderful, something that we don’t often get in the UK. Kiwis are really generous, welcoming us into their homes, loaning their cars, and taking us of excursions to see the countryside. We always have many offers of who will pick us up from the airport when we arrive! I find you feel like you’re intruding back home [in the UK], and people are more reserved, so it always felt like coming home when we land back in New Zealand,” Keith said.

Keith and Sarah have cemented their ties by purchasing a small holiday bach at Pineglades Naturist Club, south of Christchurch, where they have contributed to construction and landscaping projects during their

annual holiday. “I enjoy helping out and contributing, as I’m not there for working bees, so it’s a way to participate and feel involved,” Keith says.

“We’ve found the clubs in New Zealand are reasonably open and welcoming,” Sarah says. “There was a time when we wouldn’t tell our friends about our passion for being naked but now it doesn’t bother us much. We had friends from the UK come out to New Zealand and they were curious how we knew so many locals. So I finally blurted it out!

We don’t push it on others but we’re open to educating and putting them at ease.

We have never come across a negative reaction from people we’ve told. No one has shunned us. However I know of some that this ‘coming out’ has caused people to lose friends. It’s very sad because some have naive preconceptions about what goes on with naturists, however it’s a reflection of normal society.”

“My mum and dad have never had a problem with our nudity. We have shared our home together,” Sarah said.

“It gets a bit surreal with them around sometimes, but they’re very accepting.”

“We find the naturists clubs and resorts here in New Zealand are more open than back in the UK. There’s big signage on the roadside, a bit like France,” Keith says. No matter what you get involved in, there will always be people there you will get on with. We’ve found many wonderful people and made life-long friendships here in New Zealand.” gonatural

Every year when Sarah and Keith leave their English life behind for a few months, and take the opportunity to see another part of New Zealand. “Last year, with our local host Mike and his friend Clem from Austria, we visited the beautiful Ashburton Lakes district, and hiked up Mt Sunday, where they built the castle of Edoras in the Lord of the Rings movie,” Keith said. “We were warned that tourists still visit the area as it’s popular with film buffs. We narrowly avoided a tour coach of oldies that just came for the view and photos, but they didn’t make the hike to the top,” Keith recalled.

“However upon hiking to the top of Mt Sunday, we surprised a tour guide who appeared alarmed when he saw us naked hikers and attempted to protect his European paying guests. They were totally unfazed. We all shared a laugh.”

Ironically, when the Pūkeko flys, take-off and lands, they’re clumsy and short flight distances are preferred, something that Sarah and Keith could never be accused of. l

A Trojan Horse: the demise of nudity Often at naturist clubs, committee meetings and events, people are clothed. Even the official photographer and chair at the Naturist Rally opening ceremony in Christchurch, were not in ‘club uniform.’ Mike Ward asks, what on earth is going on?

t the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Naturist Federation, the merchandising report revealed the biggest selling item. Let’s have a quick quiz to see if we can guess what it is.

Is it... a sun hat – to protect the head from sunburn and shield the eyes from the bright sunlight? A T-shirt – to protect the shoulders and upper body from too much sun? A long-sleeved fleece top, to provide warmth to the upper body and arms by reducing wind-chill and heat lost upwards from the body? Sandals or jandals – to protect sensitive, normally shoe-clad feet from rough ground. A sarong wrap – which provides none of the above protective functions, but is purely there to provide modesty for the wearer by covering nakedness?

As you have probably guessed - and knew straight away if you have visited a naturist club in recent years, the correct answer above is a sarong.

So what will be the next big-seller for naturists in the club scene? Shorts?

Maybe his and her matching ones, or a bikini. Or if that is too immodest, then one-piece swimsuits for ladies and boardshorts for men?

The popularity of the sarong-wrap represents the triumph of the materialistic-world, clothes-compulsive, shame-based conditioning and its encroachment into what should be a sanctuary from the body-phobia of the materialistic world.

The trend for the sarong-wrap to become ‘de rigueur’ must be a disappointing development for those who treasure the naturist club as a sanctuary from the outside world. So, why is an apparently innocent garment wrapped around the body a ‘trojan-horse’? What it is doing, covertly, is changing perceptions and customs by creating a subtle pressure, primarily on women, to conform to this clothing code. It is creating an unwritten

implied ‘rule’ that nudity is not acceptable for women. This pressure smuggles in the material-world value of ‘fear’ via bodymodesty.

The materialistic world absolutely enforces clothing compulsion – the covering of the parts of the body that have been declared as ‘indecent’ or ‘provocative’ - which are always the genitals and in most places, the buttocks and female breasts. In the extreme case, some societies and cultures enforce total skin coverage of the female. As we see from the daily media, there is a direct correlation between the strength of the taboo against nudity and the oppressiveness and violence of that society – most often against females.

This is certainly not a coincidence and we need to become more observant and aware of the evidence that is everywhere around us.

Clothing compulsion and negative bodyimage is enforced by legal processes and supported by educational and public media indoctrination. This process starts from the earliest age possible that we are able to comprehend the concepts of body-shame.

Think about the impression created in a female newcomer to a naturist club. If she sees a majority – of the women adorned in a sarong-wrap, the impression is obviously created that full nakedness is not acceptable for females.

Hence the female newcomer will be discouraged from being naked too. Therefore, female nudity becomes effectively banished –without any laws or rules forbidding it. As we know, what starts off as being ‘unacceptable’ tends eventually to become ‘not permitted’.

What is the likely consequence going forward? Once the ‘word

is out’ that nudist clubs don’t expect nudity, then the clubs will be opened up to people whose values are mired in clothing compulsive society, as they see the benefits of a, still temporarily exclusive, gated community.

So, ironically, the initial result could even be a growth in membership. For those whose reaction is ‘good’ - just stop and think. Such people will bring the values of the material world with them – the influence of money, status, inconsiderate behaviour, mechanical noise, litter, theft etc. In other words, what made naturist clubs such a haven and refuge, can easily be destroyed and compromised.

If it is desired to keep naturist clubs as a refuge from the material world, then it is essential that there is an intrinsic barrier.

This has always been the nakedness of the very parts of the body that society so vehemently insists must not be naked.

If this principle is trashed then the most powerful force will prevail – the dominant emotion of society, which is of course the imperative to cover the parts of the body deemed indecent.

enforcement of nudity at all costs. To do that implies the creation of enforcers. So power and status creeps in again and the ambience and positive energy would be destroyed. What is needed is an increase in individual personal awareness.

Do we want to create, in the naturist environment, a refuge and sanctuary? If so then we all have a moral responsibility to create and maintain it.

The only way to protect nudist clubs in the long-term is to realise that each member, in thoughts, feelings and action, has that power and hence the responsibility.

It is quite simple – don’t wear shorts, togs, swimmers, or midriff wraps when the upper body is uncovered. But fine, if weather dictates, to cover the top half of the body when the lower half is naked.

Please remember, society absolutely enforces the opposite dress code, doesn’t it? To us, clothing is for protection, not modesty.

Of course, in order to appreciate and value the delights of being freely naked, then there has to be a contrast – which is our time spent compulsorily clothed. So we also have to value our time spent in the outside community – wearing clothes and respecting societal dress codes for our various roles and activities.

It is clear that those who want to preserve nudism in naturist clubs have a massive challenge ahead. The forces seeking to suppress naturism and non-sexual nudity are all-pervasive, subtle and very powerful. There is a lot at stake for the extremely wealthy power-brokers of the world who are desperate to keep humanity entrapped in materialism, competition and eternal conflict. To these people, naturism - self-acceptance and the acceptance of others - represents a threat to their wealth and power base.

At the immediate time the forces against naturism appear to be winning the battles to keep humanity closed down and locked-in to materialism. Whether they win the war depends on how well we can communicate and provide an alternative, enlightened and peaceful lifestyle.

Naturists are among the leaders of the movement of human enlightenment and we have to keep strong and true to our innermost knowledge that naturism enhances the human experience. We must help others to also experience the sense of well-being, self-acceptance and acceptance of others that naturism promotes.

More than 30 years have passed since I jumped the gate In Blenheim recently, I called into a local health shop seeking an alternative ‘natural’ insect repellent.

Although we are not inundated with hordes of sand flies and mosquitoes, like most of the country nowadays a number of pesky little midges are lurking in the bushes just waiting for a shadow to cross the sun and strike some juicy bare skin.

It’s not difficult to chat with someone who is naturally curious about this subject. Let’s face it, most people are. The questions flow, and I don’t just give my own views, I pass on comments I hear from our visitors too.

Incidentally, for sun protection I use SPF 50 Invisible Zinc, especially on my face. I figure if it’s good enough for the Black Caps, it must be good for me.

We all know that the best marketing tool is word of mouth, so I think it’s a great shame there are so many people who say they have had a marvellous weekend break or summer holiday, but feel they are unable to tell anyone else about it because of the perception other people might have of them.

It’s an enjoyable experience to do business in small stores such as our locally owned health shop as they provide an opportunity to introduce myself and more importantly (for me anyway) to talk about our own lifestyle business in Wairau Valley. It’s fun to just wait for the reaction after I offer my business card.

Invariably it becomes clear when I say something such us “It’s a naturist park with pretty much all the amenities of a regular holiday park, but you only need to bring a small suitcase.”

Little Gem’s happy valley holiday memoir Little Gem is just 5 and a half years old. She loves her naturist lifestyle with her family in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. This is her story, in her own words.

H

ooray, hooray, today we are going to our caravan at Happy Valley.

“Daddy have you put my new bike in the car yet and all of my special cuddly toys?

Daddy don’t forget my new chair seat and my bike helmet.’

I’m going to take all of my toys on holiday as they will get lonely left at home. Santa knew I was the best girl coz he bought me a brand new bike that has a flower basket on the front for my teddy bears and a little seat on the back. Santa gave me a outdoor ‘Frozen’ umbrella and chair set too and I hope I have a new tiny, tiny friend, not a big boy or big girl but someone that can fit in my new chair that won’t break it.

Zoom, zoom, zoom, off we go on the big long drive to Happy Valley. We drive past the recycle on the way and Daddy always slows down so I can count the poor old teddy bears locked behind a gate that don’t have a home and a nice cosy bed to sit on. No new ones today, I counted up to 11 and that’s the same number of teddies as last time. Poor old teddy bears, they sit outside in the sun and the rain. I’d love to take them on holiday too but they don’t belong to me. Bye bye teddy bears, see you next time.

Wow, when we get to the sea, I can see White Island and Whale Island. All along the long road by the sea, the trees are very red. I know they are called Pohutukawa trees coz we have three of them at the front of our house that had lots and lots of red flowers. I know they are called the New Zealand Christmas tree coz Mummy said so.

“Are we nearly there yet?” Yes we are and I’m so excited. Through the green gates with the big sign that say ‘Bay of Plenty Sun Club’ we go. I always point at the Gonatural sign and say “that’s me and my mummy and daddy” but my hair isn’t very long like in the picture and

call it ‘The Fairy Grotto’. I love making little leaves and flower boats to sail down the stream and blowing the dandelions coz they are my tiny fairies.

Hooray, hooray! Happy Valley holiday, we are here now and there is our new purple and white caravan with our twinkle little star lights outside. Our caravan used to smell like a mushroom when we first bought it but now it smells like yummy raspberries. I’ve got fairy lights above my bed and plenty of room for my toys.

It’s so comfy and cosy, I love our caravan.

Daddy surprised me and hung my ‘Queen Elsa’ fairy in the tree, I giggled when I saw her. There are black and coloured flutter, flutter butterflies that live in the bushes beside our stream, they are so pretty.

I’m so lucky I have swings, slide, trampoline and swimming pool. There is a big toy box and white boards for me to draw pictures in our clubhouse. I love swimming with my snorkel and googles coz I search for treasure on the bottom of the pool. Santa also bought me a new pink fishing rod so I practice my fishing in my boat in the pool. Everyday on holiday it’s sunscreen, sunnies and my hat coz it gets very hot here and we have to be sun smart especially around lunchtime but I can be a bit naughty and not wear my hat.

There was lots of families back in those old in days too. When I was nearly 5 years old, I met a lovely old old man, I was the youngest member and he was the oldest member. He was 89 years old. I remember a funny a story about him been painted all over with body paint then he had to go back to his resthome and the nurses had to wash the paint off him. I hope he didn’t get into big, big trouble. I went for a drive one day to take him back to his resthome and never saw him again after that day.

I can't believe I'm doing this but I've been reading and watching a lot lately about women in the public eye who are implicitly arguing that they're 'brave' for being a few kilos heavier than the average fashion model. Like, not being thin automatically makes them flawed, and therefore 'brave' for daring to live their lives in the public eye. What frustrates me about these women, is not that they're way thinner than me (and thus sort of implying that if they think they're some kind of fat, yet successful

miracle, then I must be a sea monster with no hope), but that despite their success, they still see weight as a major contributing factor to their value.

apologetic. By refusing to explain. If you find that you're successful and a woman and not 'conventionally' attractive, don't give it a second freaking thought.

How sad. How sad, that after becoming admired trailblazers for women, they still feel the need to talk about their size, as if mentioning it is their responsibility to cancel out some kind of elephant in the room.

Your body is your history. It's your battleground. It's what makes you who you are, and you wouldn't be as intelligent or as successful or as funny as you are without it.

It shouldn't even be an issue. When you are spectacularly intelligent and talented, your appearance and weight should not even be an issue. I know, that as a woman, it's not easy to say that. As a woman, even if your appearance isn't an issue to you, it is to everyone else.

I get that. But, fuck everyone else. We need women in the entertainment industry willing to put their intelligence and talent ahead of their looks. It may not be easy, but if we want values to change, it's necessar y.

And how do we change those values?

By being un-fucking-

I survived a childhood filled with abandonment and trauma. Then I survived mental health struggles and eating disorders. I had weight loss surgery and continue to question that decision. And in the end of all of that, this is me. This is my body. I have stretch marks. I have flabby skin. I have a belly.

I have saggy boobs and I'm covered in freckles that made me cry when I was younger.

But I'm also a best-selling author. A famous writer. An admired and funny woman. I'm touring a live one-woman show this year. I'm attending writing festivals with my heroes. I'm writing and starring in my own TV show.

I don't look the way I'm 'supposed' to look, according to a select group of people.

But I just don't give a fuck. Because I've achieved more than I've ever dreamed of in spite of people assuming I wasn't pretty or thin enough. I don't even think about being pretty or thin enough - I just think about writing the best, funniest shit I can write. My body has nothing to do with that.

So, here it is. The body that was meant to hold me back. The body that I'm supposed to apologise for. The body that is meant to keep me off your screens and out of your minds. But my intelligence and my talent is more important than my appearance. And those qualities are what will force me onto your screens and into your minds. So there.

Sharing a picture like this should end my entertainment industry career. Fuck that. I can write for and play multi-faceted,

complex and brilliant women because I am one. And I am one because of the life I've lived and the body that I've lived it in.

I am not flawed. I am brilliant. I am a survivor. And I make no apologies.

And yes - I used a very flattering filter on my face in this photo. I'm posing nude, give me freaking break.

Everyone keeps saying the post won't last long because Facebook will take it down because of my nipple. Here's hoping they see more value in this besides my naked breasts. Please, Facebook people, know that this isn't a sexual photo for men, it's an empowering photo for women (at least, I hope it is) and taking it down would be an upset for many women who love their bodies in spite of society telling them not to.

Why write about how important it is not to focus on physical appearance, and then attach a naked photo of yourself?

Good question hahahaha.

So, this whole nudie pic thing became a much bigger deal than what I anticipated!

[The] reaction has been overwhelming and lovely.

I will say this though: I get that it may seem counter-intuitive to post a status about how appearance shouldn’t matter, and then attach a naked photo of myself.

I get that. I thought a lot about that before I posted it actually. I mean, if the physical really doesn’t matter and I don’t want it to be an issue, why did I put up a

photo that very clearly made it an issue?

Well, I had a message to get across I guess, and being a bigger woman, I felt like I was in a somewhat unique position to do so visually.

I have been seeing so many women, much thinner than me, constantly talking about how they’ve achieved things in life in spite of their flaws. The thing that bothers me about that discourse, is that ‘flaws’ are even being talked about at all, and so damn often. Why is the physical always so important? So high on the agenda? There just seems to be this overarching attitude that the physical should always be top on the list of values and priorities and attention.

That’s why I posted the status and photo. I highlighted my flaws to show how frustrated I am that we even obsess about flaws to begin with! A little counterintuitive, yes, but I just wanted to say, “Look. I’m not a thin woman. In fact, I have a body that a lot of women would consider their worst nightmare. I know there are things about me that are not conventionally attractive, but I’m happy with myself because my appearance isn’t what I value most about myself. So take a look at me. Take a look at this photo.

Take a look at my ‘flawed’, chubby body, and know that if I can get on with life not constantly obsessing over my looks, then you can too.”

That’s why I refused all media requests today. Because I really do believe that we should not be obsessing over

appearance, so I didn’t want to feed that obsession by talking more about it. I just wanted to put the post up, vent my frustration and sadness at physical appearance being such an issue for so many women, and then go back to not letting physical appearance be an issue for me. I didn’t want to go on a bunch of chat shows to talk about it, because the whole point of my post is that I think people need to stop talking so much about it. There is so much more to each of us than our looks. I have reached a place in my life where understanding that has made me a lot happier as a person, and I would love to see other women reach that place too. I thought and hoped maybe a photo of me could help some women get there. I’m willing to let my appearance be a talking point for a couple of days, as long as the talking point is, “Actually, yeah - why are so freaking obsessed with appearance anyway?”

I’ll leave the photo up as long as Facebook allows it, because I stand by the message and the way I chose to deliver it. But I don’t have anything else to say about my body, because my body is THE LEAST INTERESTING THING ABOUT ME! Soon, the status will be so far down my Newsfeed that it will be forgotten, and my naked body will no longer be a talking point. Which is great.

At our Happy Valley Holiday we have so many animals. a brown owl landed on our caravan roof. I don’t like the sound of possums at night time as they frighten me and sound like a Halloween cackling witch.

I know when I hear a swish swish swish sound, it’s the wood pigeons that live up in the big tall native trees.

I watch them on the tree eating berries, they are so clumsy and break the branches coz they are too fat. I love listening to the Tui’s singing, they chase the Rosella parrots away from the honey flowers.

Summer in the South

St Kilda beach, Dunedin

Nudes at St Kilda beach December 21st marked the mid-summer solstice.

Southern Free Beaches and their friends headed to St Kilda beach to mark the occasion.

Dunedin’s favourite swimming beach at St Kilda played host for the annual summer skinny dip. It was a beautiful day and many locals decided to go to the beach and take advantage of a beautiful day - the hottest Dunedin had enjoyed for some time.

Just six months earlier, the same hardy bunch endured a midwinter swim on an empty wind-swept beach, however this had the advantage of not sharing the water with quite so many members of the public. It’s always interesting to see how people would react to nudity in this environment. “We briefed the young male and female lifeguards of our intentions and they couldn’t stop grinning,” said Julie, one of the organisers.

“We had our swim in the lovely warm water just down the beach from the majority of beach-goers.”

Julie said the penny dropped that this made much more sense than a mid-winter swim because no-one seemed to be getting hypothermia and it was a lovely free feeling to be out in the warm sun and surf and to be bare on the beach.

“After our swim everyone got dressed and headed through the crowd with the exception of Russell, who proudly remained in ‘uniform’ carrying our new ‘Bare on the Beach’ flag,” Julie said.

“As none of the crowd was in the least bit worried about the flag bearer’s lack of togs, a few more of us stripped off as well.

I think this is great example of Kiwi tolerance for nudity on a crowded public beach.” l 26 gonatural 236 March 2016

he won’t believe me unless I show her the photos,” Bernie Turner said of his surprise win at the Nude Golf International.

“Several friends have been after me to see the photos taken at the nude golf. My wife most of all is dubious as to me actually winning it, and so I need the proof!”

26 keen naked golfers from around New Zealand, Australia, UK, Nova Scotia, France and USA, arrived for the 9am tee-off under a perfect Marlborough summer’s day in February. Consummate hosts and organisers, Kay Hannam and Brian Williams, who own the neighbouring Wai-natur Naturist Park, have hosted the annual event, originally at Lake Tekapo and now in Marlborough, for the last 16 years.

Steve Mackenzie of the Wairau Valley Golf Club says it’s a pleasure to host this special event. “They’re great people and we’re happy to open our beautiful greens to these folk,” he said. This year some local clothed golfers arrived and jostled for position, after learning of the naked players. Bernie Turner from Christchurch took top honours with 38 points, and second equal on 35 points were Jenelle Shield and Doug Hunt. Bertrice Cook earned the Wooden Spoon. It was a good walk made more enjoyable. l

Waitangi long naked lunch caps off Wellington calender Wellington has enjoyed a great summer and at Te Marua, the Wellington Naturist Club is making the most of the beautiful warm weather.

On Anniversary weekend an open day in conjunction with Go Natural week was held and received publicity in local newspapers leading up to the event which bought along plenty of visitors. In the evening, the club prepared their annual spit roast with over 60 for dinner.

Another tradition is Wellington’s long lunch at Waitangi weekend, with June preparing a four-course meal including such delicacies as smoked trout and salmon. It was a great way to spend a day, seated under a shady tree with a scrumptious long lunch, a glass or two of bubbly and the company of fellow connoisseurs.

The club hosted their annual sports competitions in petanque, miniten and

golf, and in February, the Port Nicholson Geriatrix Hash House Harriers which brings new people to the club to enjoy the facilities. The CLub’s entrance has recently been reconfigured to make the grounds more accessible to larger campervans and caravans, and the hall refurbishment is also almost complete.

The club also had another mass nude photo shoot with photographer Binh Trinh. This connects with many new people and introduces them to naturism.

The magistrate did not accept her justification that she swam naked for health reasons and that it had helped cure a skin condition. The judge said he “could only conceive that an element of insanity would cause a woman of the defendant’s age to act as she had done.

She had been a disgrace to herself and her sex, nor was she justified in such a disgraceful act, even judged by modern standards.” It reflected the opinion of the time, with many people believing nude swimming or sunbathing was obscene and shameful.
