MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist lifestyle ~ a way of life in harmony with nature, expressed through social nudity, linked to self-respect, tolerance of differing views together with respect for the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom...let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - Being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - An increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - Experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’ Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.
ON OUR COVER
Thoughts from the editor Welcome to our summer 2015/16 issue of gonatural. This edition is the first with a new team at the helm, following Kay Hannam’s ‘retirement’ after nine years writing and creating a magazine that strives to present a variety of interests and people who all embrace the naturist life.
Michael Moore
It’s an honour to be appointed as the 14th editor of gonatural (formally National Review and NZ Naturist) since the magazine was launched in May 1956. Kay Hannam produced her first gonatural in March 2007, the 200th New Zealand Naturist Federation magazine, replacing Conrad Inskip as editor. Kay championed writing the stories of naturist clubs, free beaches, private homestays and many individuals who make up the colourful movement in New Zealand and around the world. Kay published 34 editions, only surpassed by Les Olsen’s 40, and Graeme Brown who edited 56 magazines. Fans of Kay will be delighted to learn I convinced her to be a regular columnist. I suspected we hadn’t seen the last of her contribution to naturism in New Zealand. Whilst my style may be different, I aim to bring you a magazine that you can enjoy, learn from and contribute to. I welcome feedback and encourage readers to share your stories, opinion, photographs and your nudist experiences. Get in touch. Naturism in a more digitally connected era, is ironically at a critical cross-roads as we continue to fight for acceptance. We see more and more conservative influence infiltrating our long-fought freedoms. Some of this conservatism even spouts from within membership of long-established clubs, whilst free-range naturists can often be more liberal and open to adapting and promoting contemporary issues about freedom from clothes. It is subjects like these that I’d love to explore, advocate and facilitate. I hope you’ll help me and participate in the discussion. May the vitamin D be with you!
-Mike

editor@gonatural.co.nz [We publish a selection of letters acknowledgeing the contribution of former editor Kay Hannam, after 9 years at the helm.]
It is with much sadness that we bid farewell to Kay as Managing Editor, but with enormous gratitude for her many years of incredible service and contribution to the magazine and wider naturist community. We have much appreciation also for the healthy state in which the magazine will be handed over to the new team which will manage, edit and publish it going forward. We hope that Kay enjoys many further trips to Europe with Brian, without working around magazine deadlines, and wish them both safe and happy travels. We look forward to reading more of their travels and experiences in future issues of gonatural…the next chapter. Bon voyage and au revoir. - Donna Miller Wishing you all the best and many happy travels, Kay. Thanks for your help and support with promoting naturism and in particular for our small group at Ngatuhoa Naturally. -William Very best wishes Kay and many thanks from all at Auckland Outdoor Naturist Club. -Jeff Norman I have just watched the interview on TV, Paul Henry interviewing Wendy Lowe. Excellent interview Wendy and I was impressed also by Paul’s responses. You are so right, you can see all sorts of trashy stuff on Facebook, especially some of the people that have liked our own page in the past. Again, well done Wendy. - Murray Nash I find some people who call themselves ‘nudists’ or that odd word ‘naturists’ that everyone gets wrong, often choose to not go naked or clothes free, and some times when I’ve visited clubs, there are many that are not naked, even when the weather is fine to do so. Why is this? I was always really keen to join but think it’s like going to a bowling club and they’re all playing rugby. - Jon Mitchell, Sth Auckland
Kay brought gonatural to new(d) heights and we Topsiders who enjoy your publication anticipate the same and more from your team. As a director for American Association for Nude Recreation-West, I represent the clubs and businesses in Hawai‘i. You can count on support from your Pacific cousins. Kay for your sacrifices, tireless work and dedication … you are truly appreciated! kia ora and aloha! - Walden Laddawan Andrew Mōrena When we grew up in Central Otago, my parents would take us kids to the river and we would always go naked, however today young kids are shamed by nudity. I think society has drummed into them too much about the perfect body image they must have. - Jan S, Clutha You did a fantastic job Kay. Took the magazine to a whole new level. It will now be up to Mike and I to carry on where you left off and continue the high standards you have set. - Noel Thomas Kay was a staunch campaigner for all those who enjoy the naturist lifestyle. Keep up the good work. -Pat Gallagher Many thanks to you for all the work you have done over the years Kay Hannam. - Marie Verschoor An amazing long run giving all of us – even north of the equator – insight into a NATURALLY beautiful New Zealand! - Petra Scheller Now to enjoy life fully without deadlines. Well done Kay. - June Campbell-Tong I’m wanting suggestions on the best place to relax in the sun around July that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Was thinking of possibly Queensland, but open to suggestions. The dream is lying on the beach with nothing but a cocktail in one hand and feasting on fresh seafood. -Polly Fairbrother
