MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom. Let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - an increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’. Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

here’s always a genuine delight in publishing the December gonatural magazine - the fifth year I have done - as it signals that summer is with us again. This issue is packed with some great stories of naked Kiwis celebrating their lifestyle. From Andy’s extraordinary portrait by the incomparable Tatyana; Tiffany and Karla’s personal stories; and Mike Ward shares his thoughts about our higher goal as naturists. There’s also a look back at the 1999 Nude Zealand documentary, you may recognise some old faces there! Have you noticed how humans rarely praise others. Why is that? This manifests itself even in our naturist community, a movement umbrellaed by a philosophy of self-respect, tolerance of differing views together with respect for the environment. I get great joy thanking others that bring happiness and positive connections to my life. And it’s so easy to do it. Saying ‘thanks for what you did today. It takes no toll on me. Flicking someone a txt message, an email, or a quick phone call. It’s a nice way to spread some genuine gratitude and make someone’s day. It’s terribly sad that we don’t all do this, because it feels so amazing telling someone else a positive message - thanking them for their contribution in your life. David Saunders, president of the Pineglades Naturist Club, who first connected me with Kay Hannam in 2015 to take over the editorship of gonatural, said it so well in his club’s newsletter: “I make a heartfelt plea about the coming months, can we all endeavour to show that we are a caring and empathetic group who believe in the naturist creed that we live in harmony with nature and show respect for each other.” In his professional life, David deals with people who live on the fringe of society, who have ended having to confront their actions, and often provided with an opportunity to make amends and start over. He sees how people’s behaviour and actions directly impact others. We are now more attuned to people’s mental health, and how someone’s language, relationship or online behaviour, can dramatically impact someone. Be kind and be a friend. If you disagree with someone, fine, but do it in a respectful manner.

Well done on another great issue! I really like your article about censorship and nipples [gonatural #249], and have to confess that, after that, I found it hard to get interested in the other articles, but will finish it soon. - Wendy Lowe, Hawkes Bay I loved all the photos from the summer photo competition [gonatural #249] Would love to see the pics of other entrants. - Anthony Ewing, Virginia, QLD, Australia Let me say how much Julie and I enjoyed reading my story [gonatural #250]. Even though we know the story, the way that you have written it, is amazing and we appreciate the effort you have put into bringing it to life. It was entirely appropriate that the article was out for November which is Prostate Health month. - Reece and Julie Hood, Tauranga What a triumph [gonatural #250]! The rock climber, the vets and Reece and Julie’s story, all very good reading..and Randy’s passing at just 64, a poignant tale and a reminder to us all to make the most of every day, and the Milton Wainwright article - beautifully presented with the Maori carving. - Deborah Read, Kapiti Coast Saw the interview with on TVNZ about nude gardening. As usual, Wendy Lowe was brilliant, she gets a 10... the news team get minus 10! So many idiot questions and the follow-on discussion was just wrong! - Allan Fredric, Southern Naturally I make a heartfelt plea about the coming months. Can we all endeavour to show that we are a caring and empathetic group who believe in the naturist creed that we live in harmony with nature and show respect for each other and the environment. An offer of assistance to others is just one tangible step that members can take to add value to our club life. - David Saunders, president Pineglades Our committee had discussions about gonatural magazine getting content from clubs. Most of us are failing to help with contributing articles. It is quite untimely to criticize or go on a hunt for balance judgements on content. We should be thankful we still have such a professional and well-presented magazine. We wish to only support a mag that is doing a great job of promoting the naturist lifestyle we treasure and have no desire to condone any negative connotations. - Kevin Mangino, VP, Waikato Outdoor.

I feel the need to issue a warning about engaging with [gonatural magazine] and advising against sharing images with the editor or having your image taken for an official publication or otherwise due to violations of consent around publishing images. I won’t be going into further detail due to a variety of reasons but please understand the decision to make this post has not been made lightly. Remember if you have experienced or do experience any issues within the naturist community to reach out. You have a safe space with me and if you don’t feel safe speaking to me (perfectly fine) I can make sure to put you in touch with someone else experienced within the community who may suit you better. - Lauren McGee, member Wellington Naturist Club - gonatural seeks permission for

photos. NZNF has not received any complaint from Ms McGee. She was elected as youth coordinator at the NZNF AGM 2017 and then refused to be photographed for the committee photo. The following 12 months, Ms McGee couldn’t be contacted by the NZNF and never participated in any meetings. Ms McGee is the sole admin of her own private online Facebook group ‘New Zealand Naturists & Naturism’ that has no affiliation with the NZNF. -Ed

I would like to congratulate you on the September gonatural magazine. Thank you for publishing my article and the Wellington club news. I am always impressed with the quality of the magazine and was really pleased to see the support for you in the letters to the editor, after that letter from Taranaki. - Constance Gervasi, Wellington I don’t normally read the magazine, but did get a digital version of the last issue. I must say the paper version is heaps easier to read. If the digital version was in landscape format, that would make it easier I think. - Jonathan Bayliss, Takapau, Hawkes Bay The conventional magazine design, since Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg designed the printing press, has been portrait. Our digital edition is an exact copy of the printed magazine. -Ed

We were moved about your feature story on cancer [Sept 2019]. It was just powerful and inspirational to read. What an honour to share it. - Johnson Rainer, Dunedin You did a great job on the ‘Walking Wainuiomata’ story. It looks really good. - Patrick Fotheringham, Wellington
