for health & well-being

June/July 2019

MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom. Let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - an increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’. Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

O

ur magazine couldn’t survive without the wonderful photographs that people send in from across New Zealand and around the world - avid readers and supporters of naturism, members of clubs and Free Beaches, and individuals who just celebrate being at one with their body. Testament to this is the extraordinary depth and variety of photos submitted for our 2019 competition. Thanks to everyone who shared their images. In a world that increasingly wants to censor us, tell us what we should be permitted to see, and that images of normal naked humans are blurred in the world akin to the domain of sexual predators, we must stand up. As if that naked human form must be harming or hurting someone, or some religion, or conservative culture boundary is breached. Should we all stoop to the lowest proclivity of what others don’t want to see? The naturist community in New Zealand has been at the forefront of normalising nudity for more than 60 years. From the early days under the formidable tenure of Perc Cousins, challenged the Indecent Publications Tribunal in July 1968, to the public advocacy of Joyce Fleming, the formation of Free Beaches that supported numerous legal challenges including Nick Lowe’s case for the right to cycle naked in 2010, and the extraordinary legacy of Kay Hannam, just to name a few. We owe so much to our forebears and must not allow 2000 years of progress of how our body should be celebrated and honoured from ancient times, when there was no shame, be whittled away in a few short years as the digital age smothers us under the veil of ‘protection and safety’.
