The December gonatural magazine was a really wonderful read, and especially the cover story of the lady with her horses... just beautiful photography and stunning to see such magnificent animals in the ocean. It appeared that she was not a naturist/nudist but her words were extraordinary and inspiring. Thank you for a great mag. - Susan Begg, Kaitaia, Northland Recently we had a new couple join our naturist club, but they fail to join in with others. We believed the best thing of a club, is the interaction and fun of sharing time with others? - Barry and Jean K I saw something puzzling recently at a Florida nudist resort (I’m not saying which one). There was a “bikini fashion show” in which women paraded by the pool wearing two-piece bathing suits, while nude guests in and around the pool applauded. Well, I didn’t applaud because the whole thing seemed ridiculous to me, somewhere between pointless and contrary to nudist values. But I guess some nudists have to put the dang things on somewhere. -Rich PascoLand ‘o Lakes, Florida I received an email from a nudist group advising of their regular swim night but this was of concern to me... “A suggestion from a member, which the committee has decided to run with: ‘a special deal for the ladies as associate members to be $14 entry fee at swim nights”. Please let any ladies you know to invite them along.” In a day and age when men are already highly discriminated against, in places such as family law, emergency accommodation, male-specific health research, family court issues (and so it goes on), I’d have hoped a simple nudists swim group would have risen above this, to avoid such discriminatory practices weaving their way into the nudist movement. I found it offensive and sad that a group would impose a cheaper price for women, simply because they are women. I know they will try to explain their bias to “encourage” more women to attend but really that holds no water. If women don’t want to join a nudist group, that is for the women to decide.... they should not be lured into group events by offering a price cheaper than that offered to men. I have been planning to attend
for about a year, but always found the entry fee way beyond this pensioner’s financial means. Now to be slapped across the teeth with knowledge that women are going to get in for half, I felt was an insult to all men. I don’t care to be involved with a group that discriminates on sexual grounds. - Alan Hubbard, Lake Munmorah, NSW A friend of mine was at Pohutukawa Bay beach (Long Bay, Auckland) and had the following experience: a DOC worker was walking up and down the beach telling everybody they could not be naked on the beach, only when swimming. He was told that DOC are helping the local rangers with various issues right now but that they wanted to keep the park “family friendly”. He said the person that approached him was very kind and respectful but nevertheless delivered this message which in fact holds no legal substance whatsoever. - [name withheld], Auckland There’s no easy one-size-fits-all answer [for family nudity] with children. In our house, nudity is the norm rather than the exception, so our two boys have never been horrified by bare bods nor being nude, though even when that is the case, not all kids are going to equate normalisation of nudity about the house with social nudity. Fortunately they’ve also been going to naturist clubs and beaches their whole lives too and even in their teens they’re still cool with going nude when swimming etc. I think one of the key things is you need them to know is the importance of their personal boundaries and that there is no “obligation” to be nude. Most clubs (that I’ve been to) have a hard-and fast “no togs in the pool” rule, that everyone, kids included, are expected to adhere to. Usually, though not exclusively, the kids let the desire to swim and be kids (especially if there are peers around) override the concern of being seen nude. Getting the family into the naturist lifestyle is nicer when everyone’s together. -Trevor Shanahan, Rotorua District Can I say that my thoughts remain with the people of New Zealand. We Tasmanians understand the shock and pain all too well [following the Christchurch massacre. - Adam Smolenski, Tasmania, Australia
