The Joy of Life Douglas François Girard

G

rowing up in Africa, Douglas François Girard spent hours studying pictures of Europe, Canada, and Alaska in National Geographic magazines, longing to be present in northern forests, looking out across a vista dominated by towering mountain peaks. Girard’s studies of mythology increased his love for these faraway destinations. “Ancient cultures considered shady forests, pools of water, and high mountain peaks as mystical places where they could feel closer to their gods,” he explains. “From time immemorial, mankind must have stood in awe of nature at such spots and been touched by the same spiritual feeling that I experience.”

Girard moved to Alaska in 1993, finding his revered “cathedrals of stillness” in the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains. His landscapes pay homage to nature’s many changing moods, imbuing his art with a richly nuanced sense of mystery and expectation.

The mountains and mythology inspire his figurative landscapes, as well. “My figures act in harmony with the moods of nature,” says Girard. “They partake in rituals, emerge out of mist, and are nearly always close to water, the symbol of life. They meditate on the shores and in the sanctuary of womblike mountain lakes or dance near bubbling waterfalls. Here, beauty, peace, mystery and the mystical reside.”

31st Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show

D

uring the weekend of October 13-14, the center of Gainesville will be transformed into a blend of art, entertainment, and food during the 31st Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show, one of the nation’s premier outdoor fine arts festivals. Presented by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the festival draws a crowd of more than 100,000 each year.

More than 250 of the nation’s most talented artists will have their artwork on display, ranging from original oils and acrylics to watercolors, sculptures, dazzling jewelry, ceramics and photography. The artists’ booths will be open from 10-5 each day.

Throughout the weekend, live performances will be staged in three locations. Local bands and solo musicians will play folk, jazz, country, pop and soul music. Dance companies will provide ballet, jazz, modern and international dance performances. Friday’s evening concert begins at 8:00pm and will feature the University of Florida School of Music groups: World Music Ensembles, Jazz Combo and Sunshine Steelers Steel Band. Saturday’s Downtown Blues concert presented by the North Florida Blues Society will begin at 7:00pm.

Children will also have the chance to enjoy the festival and be creative at the Imagination Station, a free handson art activity area. They can draw with chalk, paint pictures, design masks, sculpt clay, and create puppets and buttons. The Imagination Station

healthbriefs Few U.S. Adults Regularly Practice Healthy Habits

A

recent American Heart Association (AHA) survey reports that only 12 percent of American adults regularly practice the healthy-life trifecta of good nutrition, exercise and oral care. The most common excuse is a lack of time.

Of those surveyed, 80 percent said that eating at least nine servings of fruit and vegetables daily is a struggle. About 60 percent find it difficult to log the association’s recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. At least 25 percent don’t brush and rinse twice daily and floss at least once daily.

Yet, 90 percent of Americans like the idea of improving their health. The AHA “My Heart. My Life.” initiative offers a straightforward set of solutions to help families understand how to make incremental changes that have long-term health impact (MyLifeCheck.Heart.org).

“Whether it is simply adding a 30-minute brisk walk to your day, eating a few more fruits and vegetables with meals, balancing your calories and physical activity to achieve a healthy body weight or creating routine oral care habits—it all contributes to an overall healthier lifestyle,” says Cardiologist Tracy Stevens, a professor of medicine with Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Watching Magic Boosts Creativity in Children

R

esearchers from Lancaster University have discovered that youngsters watching creative fantasy films improve their own imagination and creativity. The study involved 52 4- to 6-year-old children. The youngsters were split into two groups and shown two short segments of a popular fantasy movie. The findings showed that the group watching the magical scenes generally scored “significantly better” in creative activities than their peers in the other group who saw scenes without any magical content.

Why Laptops Should be Renamed... and Relocated

T

he portable computers that serve as our business and communication “lifelines” may actually be thwarting unborn lives. Researchers suggest that laptop computer (LTC) users should avoid putting the devices directly on their laps, especially for extended periods of time.

Recent research reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility examined semen samples from 29 healthy male donors that used an LTC on their laps, near their testes. The scientists found that LTCs connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi resulted in decreased sperm motility and increased sperm DNA fragmentation.

A separate study, published in the journal Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health, noted that electromagnetic fields produced by LTCs likely induce currents within the body and can expose developing fetuses in pregnant women to unsafe levels. The researchers concluded that, “[An individual’s] ‘laptop’ is paradoxically an improper site for the use of an LTC, which consequently should be renamed to not induce customers towards an improper use.”

Mate Tea Fights Colon Cancer

A

ccording to a recent University of Illinois study, bioactive compounds in mate tea, a beverage consumed in South America for its medicinal properties, killed human colon cancer cells in vitro. The scientists attribute this surprising health benefit to the tea’s caffeine derivatives that induced death in the cancer cells and reduced important markers of inflammation.

Noodle Doodle: Creativity on Tap

reativity is often perceived as an unpredictable event, the product of an unexpected “Aha!” moment. But a pair of Michigan psychologists, Mareike Wieth, of Albion College, and Rose Zacks, of Michigan State University, decided to research the concept. They discovered that problems requiring a flash of illumination to solve are best approached during the time of day when thinkers are not actually at what they feel is their peak.

Reporting their findings in the journal Thinking and Reasoning, they assigned 428 students to fill out a questionnaire with 19 questions, including, “What time would you get up if you were entirely free to plan your day?” and “How much do you depend upon an alarm clock?”

Participants were categorized as morning, evening or neutral types and randomly assigned to a morning or afternoon testing session. Some problems were analytic in nature, others were inspiration-based. While the more logical type of problem solving showed no statistical difference, morning people scored higher on the insightdemanding challenges in the late afternoon, and vice versa.

Wieth and Zacks believe the results depend upon an inhibitory process that suppresses distracting information. It is thought that this system performs less efficiently when individuals are less alert, allowing random thoughts to enter the decision-making process, resulting in more creative thinking.

A

ccording to a report in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, local ecosystems can be influenced and even disturbed by noise pollution. Clinton Francis, of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, in Durham, North Carolina, found that the uproar of noisy gas wells that operate day and night in northwestern New Mexico woodlands drives away some wildlife species and attracts others, and also alters the overall makeup of area plant life. Specifically, he discovered that the reshuffling of desirable birds and small mammals changed the odds of success for local plant reproduction.

Hummingbird pollination, important for certain wildflowers, increased, while birds likely to spread around pine seeds without eating all of them largely gave way to seed-eating mice.

he rap on most plastic is that although it can be recycled, it doesn’t decompose in landfills. For a period of time, the city of Houston halted its composting of household yard waste due to the cost of having to cut and empty the plastic bags used in curbside pickup, even though the annual landfill fees exceeded $1 million. But now the service has resumed, based on the use of new, compostable plastic bags that require no special handling; the city even garners income from sales of composted clippings.

Dinnerware, such as utensils, plates and cups, is another niche market in which advocates see potential for use of compostable plastics, especially by cafeterias, restaurants and other institutions. Not only are such items not biodegradable, they often end up being thrown out with food waste.

Biodegradable polymers that break down in a matter of months are more expensive; for example, the BASF company’s Ecoflex material costs about two-and-a-half times more than the polyethylene it replaces. But proponents say that it provides value by enabling the large-scale collection of organic waste, such as grass clippings and food, and that the potential for growth is enormous.

Common strategies include using old newspapers for stuffing or wrapping and used tin cans to collect cooking grease. Author Jeff Yeager, in his book, Don’t Throw That Away, expounds on such everyday “upcycling”.

His tips include using a banana peel to shine shoes, sprinkling crumbled eggshells in the garden as fertilizer and natural pest control, and stuffing dryer lint inside empty toilet paper rolls for fireplace kindling. Fill empty plastic bottles with water and freeze them to make the refrigerator more energy-efficient, and also to serve as dripless ice cubes for the family picnic cooler.

Before discarding old carpet, salvage the best sections to use in smaller spaces, like a bathroom, closet, car floor or pet house. Instead of buying new shelf liners, consider used gift-wrapping paper for kitchen or bathroom cabinets.

Scrap lumber, tile and stones can be made into mosaic art designs. A cat scratching post exemplifies another multi-source (carpet and wood) upcycling project.

While about 90 percent of U.S. households now have curbside recycling available, the amount of trash each American produces keeps growing. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average citizen currently generates about 4.5 pounds of trash a day, totaling 600 times their body weight over a lifetime unless they seriously practice the three R’s of reduce, reuse and recycle.

No More Hidden GMOs

alifornia voters face a food-protection milestone this November when Proposition 37, a citizens’ initiative, appears on their ballots. If it passes, California will be the first state to require labeling of a wide range of foods containing genetically engineered (GE) ingredients.

Determined to defeat this first-ever initiative, some of the nation’s largest biotech and agribusiness companies have poured millions of dollars into negative advertising.

Even more alarming is that much of the money comes from sources most shoppers would not suspect.

“Consumers might be surprised to find out that brands hiding under ‘natural’ façades are in fact owned by multibillion-dollar corporations that are contributing bushel baskets of cash to defeating Proposition 37,” says Charlotte Vallaeys, director of Farm and Food Policy at The Cornucopia Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting sustainable, organic agriculture via research, investigation and education.

According to Cornucopia, recent polls indicate that nearly 70 percent of California citizens support informational labeling. Proponents of Proposition 37 have contributed $3 million—a number dwarfed by the $23 million bursting from biotech and food manufacturer coffers to fight the measure.

Are You Following What Is Practical, or Are You Following Your Passion?

L

ife is about finding your purpose and meaning. The meaning of life is a life of meaning. It’s about finding what you love to do the most, living with passion, searching for what gives your life balance.

It’s about connecting with who you really are and living a life of purpose. Having a purpose in your life is almost like a spiritual experience. Ask yourself “The Question.” It helps you find the answer to the one question we all need an answer for: What should I do with my life?

Until you discover the purpose of your life, you are living a life of mediocrity. Rise and be great. Do the great things you were meant to do. Look deep inside you, connect with the master within. Realize what your life’s purpose is and embrace it.

Stop living by someone else’s expectations, or by society’s influences and myths.

When you do find purpose and meaning in life, you will discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be. The

world you live in will never be the same and the opportunities life throws at you will be abundant.

The questions are:

1. Are you looking for your purpose?

2. Don’t know if you have a purpose?

3. Don’t believe in a purpose or are not sure if your current purpose is your real purpose?

After you answer those questions, the most important questions are: 1. Are you ready?

2. Are you willing?

3. Are you able?

Sometimes, as you find the answers to those questions, you find that it’s different from your present situation. That can produce fear and doubt.

What many people have found is this: If you are ready and willing to step through the threshold, walk past the immobilizing fear of the unknown, the universe (or you can call it God, Great Spirit, Life Energy, The Tao or anything that has inner meaning to you) seems to come forth, welcome

you, and guide you into your highest Self and life purpose.

Here is where you can breathe and experience total freedom, joy, wisdom, and satisfaction.

This is true whether in the context of a relationship, a career, finances, health, spiritual growth, or any other areas of your life.

Once you know your direction, set up a plan of action.

There might be huge gaps between where you stand right now and your goals. Maybe you do not have the skills needed to pursue your life purpose. Maybe you are not able to immediately make a living with your new direction. That is totally okay—nobody says you have to jump and be at your end point immediately. No matter where you are, start, by building the bridge to link your current position and your desired life purpose. Identify commonalities between the two points which can help to facilitate the shift.

Build mini-steps you can undertake every day. Do what you can, within your abilities, and within your situation.

Life is not about a destination. It’s about a journey. Life is about living in alignment with your purpose every single day, to your best of your abilities, being true to yourself, being authentic.

ChiWalking Daily Steps to Focus, Strengthen, and Energize

E

arlier generations recognized the amazing effects that walking has on health. G. M. Trevelyan, a noted English historian, wrote in the 1920s: “I have two doctors. My left leg and my right.”

In those days, science had not yet documented how the traditional evening stroll exercises the heart, calms the mind, and benefits one’s overall constitution. But today’s research shows that walking may be nothing short of a miracle cure.

A recent study reported in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise shows that adults in their 50s and 60s who consistently walk are about 25 percent less likely to die in the next eight years than their sedentary counterparts. The University of Michigan Medical Center study further notes that, for smokers and others with high blood pressure or diabetes, the risk of death drops 45 percent.

The myriad benefits of walking, as attested in studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and others, go beyond increasing bone density and improving mental acuity to lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Walking literally can make the difference between life and death.

In our work with walking instructors and students around the country, we have found that applying some Tai chi principles to walking movements boosts benefits and makes walking a mindful practice. As in Tai chi, Pilates and yoga, ChiWalking teaches you

how to use the strong core muscles of your torso to walk, which helps prevent pain and fatigue.

Learning and practicing ChiWalking connects you more deeply with your body as you listen and respond to its needs and rhythms. We call it “body sensing,” a centered awareness that allows you to align mind and body in a way that promotes healthy, effortless, steady and balanced movement. Eckhart Tolle, in A New Earth, writes of such awareness of the inner body as “anchoring you in the present moment.”

Taking it a step further, we teach how projecting your energy forward to a point or object in the distance, with which you maintain a visual connection, leaves little room for distraction.

Everything naturally falls into alignment, following the direction of the eyes. In Tai chi, this concentrated focus is called y’chi.

ChiWalking involves five mindful steps

Get aligned. First, create great posture. Then, walk by keeping the shoulders in front of the hips, leveraging the pull of gravity to assist in forward momentum. This reduces the impact to the lower back and legs.

Watch a small child walk, and you will see perfect walking form. Their upper body tilts forward and their legs go out the back.

Engage the body’s core. Engaging your core muscles connects your torso to your legs and stabilizes the pelvis during movement. It also strengthens these muscles over time. This allows you to walk with your whole body. An unstable pelvis increases vulnerability to a host of ailments, such as lower back pain, hip bursitis, and iliotibial band syndrome, which affects thighs and knees.

Create balance. Most of us thrust our hips forward when we stand or walk. This is what throws the whole body out of alignment and increases impact on the knees and lower back.

Leading with the shoulders in ChiWalking relieves pressure on the lower back and allows you to walk with slightly bent, relaxed knees. Practitioners of ChiWalking, as those of Tai chi, learn to create balance from back-tofront, side-to-side and upper body-tolower body. A state of physical balance supports a state of emotional balance.

Make a choice. The first three steps help establish a platform for daily making the kinds of positive choices that profoundly affect health and well-being. Walking is a good way to enhance and manage your energy. You can choose to calm yourself if you’re tense, get energized if you are tired, or get focused if you are feeling scattered.

Move forward. The final step asks you to move forward into your life and your walking by being consistent with your practice. It is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other, and as important as choosing healthy foods to nourish your body. Because a consistent practice of healthy movement is the key to good health and vibrant energy, it’s among the best preventive medicines in the world.

BAREFOOTIN’: IT GROUNDS US Reap Earth’s Energy for Wellness

Imagine feeling the surge of well-being that comes from strolling barefoot on a moist, sandy beach or sinking all 10 toes into a cool, lush lawn on a warm summer day. Both comprise an experience known as “grounding” or “earthing”. Recent research suggests that these tempting life experiences offer more than feel-good frolics; they might help reboot health.

“B

y the end of the day, I could hardly walk. My feet would be screaming,” relates Lynn Deen, 66, of Mio, Michigan, describing dealing with Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in both heels. “I struggled with it for four years. I tried everything, from conventional treatments to complementary therapies.

Nothing touched it.”

Then Deen listened to an online interview about Earthing (also known as “grounding”), a therapy that involves connecting with the Earth’s electrical field, either through skin-to-ground contact (barefoot strolls) or by using home grounding products available online.

Motivated by a yearning to maintain her active lifestyle, Deen decided to try it. Three months later, she attested, “My heels were completely normal.” And because she opted to use a

special earthing bedsheet, Deen says her husband benefited, too. “We have better sleep, less snoring, and a better sense of well-being,” she reports.

Theoretically, because the waterabundant human body is a good electrical conductor, such grounding allows negatively charged free electrons, which are rife on the Earth’s surface, to enter the body and scour it for free radicals: those positively charged particles that cause disease and inflammation.

“Most diseases today are related to chronic inflammation,” says Dr. Martin Gallagher, a physician and chiropractor who heads Medical Wellness Associates, a large integrative medicine clinic in Jeannette, Pennsylvania.

“That inflammation is considered to be the buildup of positive electrons.

The Earth’s free electrons neutralize these chemical buzz bombs, called

free radicals, bringing the body back to homeostasis. It is that state of equilibrium that allows the body to heal.”

Today’s lifestyles have nearly eliminated that natural healing effect, says James Oschman, director of the Nature’s Own Research Association, in Dover, New Hampshire. “When I was a kid, my shoes came off in the spring and didn’t come back on until fall,” Oschman recalls.

Today, almost everybody wears plastic-soled shoes, rides in vehicles, and hangs out indoors on carpet and wood or tiled floors, completely blocking these free electrons, which Oschman maintains are the most effective and efficient antioxidants available. Oschman states, “We’ve experienced a total disconnect.”

His claim is supported by small studies that are beginning to accumulate, indicating the potential benefits of Earthing. Here is a sampling of the findings, from The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Helped the body’s natural healing response. Researchers compared physiological changes during a two-hour grounding session of 14 men and 14 women and then a two-hour sham session. Changes in respiration and heart rates plus blood oxygenation within 20 minutes of Earthing appeared to aid the healing process, reports lead author Gaetan Chevalier, Ph.D., director of the Earthing Institute. He notes that as in previous studies, subjects with acute inflammation experienced less swelling, redness, heat and pain.

Improved sleep and reduced pain and stress. Researchers grounded 12 patients looking for these benefits while they slept. Comparing their cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone) prior to the eight-week study with results from periodic retesting and follow-up interviews, they found that grounding reduced nighttime levels of cortisol and better aligned its secretion with the body’s natural 24-hour circadian rhythm, which is important for sleep. Subjects reported improvements in all three areas.

Decreased muscle pain. Researchers looked at blood counts and chemistry in eight active exercisers, following routines that assured muscle soreness.

Four Ways to Light(en) Up Your Life

n an increasingly unpredictable world where anxiety and insecurity abound, where can we turn to find peace and happiness? The simple answer is: within ourselves. Here’s how.

1. Get present.

When you find yourself in the midst of a worrisome situation, stop.

Go inward, and ask yourself, “What is wrong in this moment?” Usually, nothing is wrong at that time. It is when we stray off into past regrets and future concerns that anxiety kicks in; don’t deny the problems that you are facing, but don’t get lost in them, either. Being in the present will bring you greater alertness and inner security, allowing you to face challenges more objectively and with greater calm.

2. Laugh at yourself.

When you realize you are obsessing over a concern or a worry, laugh at yourself. Just look up at the sky and think, “Oh! I’m doing it again.” When you don’t take yourself so seriously, you immediately disarm the worry and anxiety of the human intellect. 3. Go with the flow.

As adults, we lose the ability to flow. We cling to the idea of what we want and fight against the current of life, because we think that securing

what we want is what is going to make us happy. But that isn’t the truth; our happiness depends upon the wisdom of the choices we make in each moment. Ask yourself, “Am I choosing to be happy, or am I fighting for what I want? Am I attached to an idea, or am I willing to flow?”

4. Take responsibility for your own happiness.

“If only he or she wasn’t so… then, I could be happy.” Does this sound familiar? We are so dependent on the behaviors of others that whenever they aren’t doing what we want them to, we suffer. If your happiness depends upon others, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. People continually change and things are never exactly the way we expect them to be. Stop trying to change others so you can be happy. Instead, focus on praising and appreciating the people around you.

he best definition of intuition is that which we know in our hearts to be true. When we feel good and right about a decision, we often attribute it to having followed our intuition.

There is a difference, however, between what “feels good” and what we “know in our hearts.” Discerning this difference separates wishful thinking from true intuitive intelligence.

Intuitive intelligence can be identified by the qualities that accompany it, like effortlessness, clarity, inspired ideas, synchronicity, and profound peace. As these qualities also represent the spiritual substance of our selves, the intuitive insights we receive resonate with the truth of our being. When faced with a challenging choice, it helps to look for the presence or absence of harmony, clarity, and peace before taking any action. Jumping into action out of frustration is not intuitively intelligent, while waiting for answers that bring clarity and inner peace is a flawless guide.

To move through the layers of confusion and emotion when facing a dilemma, it helps to identify both what we want and what is needed. Confusion often characterizes the conflict between our personal agenda, which may be hidden from us, and the action that the situation genuinely calls for.

The following exercise can move our attention beyond focusing on the details of a problem to an awareness of what is really needed. As the steps unfold, take notice of any enhanced feelings of peace, assurance, gratitude and love.

The Process Is the Product Finding our purpose by being in the moment with acceptance of what is

“T

he process is the product.”

This is a quote from one of my music professors, Dr. Gordon Johnson, Ph.D., who taught me about the energy of life.

We are all seeking to find the feeling of peace, and connection to our passion and purpose in life. Most of the time, we have unconscious patterns of responses to life that cause disease, poverty, fear, sadness, and depression, and limit achievement. They prevent our recognition of our brilliant, successful, divine, purposeful self.

These limitations burrow into us very subtly. I was privileged to help a woman who was labeled as shy all her life. Her mother had been a good mother, keeping watch over her very carefully—but in so doing, she had driven the daughter to be afraid to trust her own choices. “You have to do it my way or you won’t be safe” was the message the daughter picked up. In the process, she had become afraid to know and follow her own intuition and guidance. What a liberation it was for her to see and release this pattern. She emerged with a more clear and joyful connection to her purpose and passion.

It has always amazed me to see how everything that happens can be a great gift, an opportunity to learn about who we are. I like to call it “the divine right order of things.” I have always found this to be the most profound and exciting part of life. Often, we think something is terrible—and when we look at it through the eyes of an opportunity, it becomes a blessing. Unexpected good seems to come that way, too. Have you had those moments? Did it teach you something very important?

That knowledge leads me again and again to the understanding of the value of gratitude for everything that happens.

I am grateful for the moment to moment opportunity to learn and grow into the blessing of being who I am meant to be—love, light, joy, vibrancy, acceptance, peace, compassion. This is who I already am and who you are. My purpose is to know and remain connected to that true me.

We tend to look at living our passion or purpose as a goal that has to be achieved. That often takes us to a place of judging ourselves for not having reached our goal and not having fulfilled our purpose. That leads to working harder, which further deepens our separation from who we are. The challenge is to relax into it. We have been programed to expect something out of ourselves that is a destination we have to reach in order to have achieved our purpose. However, you, and now, are the destination.

As Professor Gordon said, “The process is the product.” By setting our course, tuning in, and following our moment to moment guidance, we are living in our purpose. We are living and finding our calling. We are it, note by delicious note.

We can always trust life. Each encounter is our lesson, a golden gift of the day, shaping us towards our purpose—to live and learn. As we trust, we open to the gifts of life that fulfill our purpose.

ere is one of my favorite stories.

St. Peter is showing a man around heaven. When they arrived at one of the doors, St. Peter passed it by. The man who was getting the tour asked, “Why did you avoid that door?” St Peter said, “You

would not want to see behind that door, because it is everything God had for you that you did not let God give you.”

We are programmed to respond to life a certain way. We have patterns that were identified in Dr. David Hawkins’ book, Power vs. Force. Patterns that limit us from reaching our true self include such things as shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger, pride; or lack of courage, acceptance, love, joy, peace. These patterns are in us and attract what comes to us.

Recently, a woman shared with me that she is anxiously going into a third marriage, and the first two were abusive.

She said she has not healed from the first two. She said she can feel the fear and expectation of abuse in her. She cannot feel the love and trust she knows she should.

Will she—indeed, will we—heal these kinds of things, or just let them re-run?

Listen boldly to your inner guidance and passion, and follow it. This is your purpose. Set your sights on finding yourself and your truth. Let the subtle feelings be your guide. Imagine what your life would be like if you do this.

A Conversation with Sally Bingham Community Minister, National Activist

T

he Rev. Canon Sally Bingham, a priest at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, is founder and president of the Regeneration Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to greening faith-based communities.

Through their Interfaith Power and Light campaign, Bingham and her eco-apostles have helped some 14,000 congregations in 39 states to reduce their carbon footprint.

A stay-at-home mom until she enrolled in college at age 45, Bingham is a recipient of the Purpose Prize, which honors leaders older than 60 who are taking on society’s biggest challenges. She is the lead author of the 2009 book, Love God, Heal Earth: 21 Leading Religious Voices Speak Out on Our Sacred Duty to Protect the Environment.

What scriptures or spiritual teachings specifically impel you and others to act to save the environment?

The first and great commandment is to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Your neighbor isn’t just the person next door; it’s also the generation after us. This is a mandate for environmental protection.

God asked us to be fruitful and multiply and “tend the garden.” We’ve certainly multiplied; now we need to focus on gardening.

God gave us dominion—which is different from domination and exploitation; it means taking care of the Earth.

How do you engage average churchgoing Americans in big-picture issues such as the environment, when they might be struggling just to pay the bills?

We show people ways they can save money. We gave out 48,000 free compact fluorescent light bulbs to our congregation, and they took them home and reduced their energy bills immediately.

There is a start-up cost to some of the alternatives we promote, but sometimes you have to spend money to save money. For example,

we help congregations put in solar panels, which have a payback period of about eight years. Once installed, that congregation will start getting electricity for free, and they receive credit for any excess electricity they sell back to the grid.

You founded Interfaith Power and Light in 1997, when the idea of putting solar panels on churches was revolutionary.

Now that “green” has gone mainstream, is it easier to get congregations on board?

The first step is to understand the present situation of environmental degradation. People generally want to do the right thing. Years ago, I unconsciously behaved in ways that harmed our environment, but now, among other things, I compost, drive a fuel-efficient car, and unplug appliances when they’re not in use.

There is a discipline involved in following any kind of spiritual path. But eventually, it becomes who you are; you’ll find that your heart grows bigger in the process.

We no longer have to be proactive. People now come to us in such swarms; we barely have sufficient staff to deal with the requests, even though our national office employs eight people.

We have some tremendous success stories. Perhaps the most dramatic was when a 10-day blackout hit. The Catholic priest who runs our Michigan office has a solar panel wired to a wind turbine to supply power to his congregation. He became a beacon of light by serving up hot food and warmwater showers to the community.

Our “Cool Congregation” program encourages families to compete with each other to have the most energy-efficient home. We hear stories of kids riding their bikes to church and even taking cooler showers to decrease their energy use.

Once people get the message of conservation, they become admirably creative.

How can we learn to see living an eco-friendly life as a spiritual practice?

How are you building an interfaith coalition that cuts across the political spectrum?

These days, we’re doing a little more advocacy work than we used to, getting people to ask their legislators for laws that will cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. During our lobby day in Washington in May, rabbis, Buddhists and Catholic priests walk the White House halls to talk about these issues.

An unexpected consequence of our work is that people of diverse religions have put their theological differences aside for this common purpose. We deliver a similar message to politicians: If you are a person of faith, then you have a

The Importance of Iodine for Normal Body Function

I

am seeing epidemic levels of iodine/iodide deficiency in my practice: Nine out of 10 patients are clinically deficient in iodine when tested here. This problem is severe, and it causes cascading medical consequences that are happening much more frequently today in conditions such as ADD, polycystic breast disease, hypo- and hyperthyroidism, autoimmune thyroid conditions, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, hypertension, hormone resistance syndrome, and breast cancer. Iodine is a well known treatment for women who suffer with chronic recurring urinary tract infections—and unless there is kidney failure, there will not be iodine toxicity.

As a matter of fact, excess iodine is easily excreted with no ill effects.

Iodine and breast cancer: “Iodine alters gene expression in the MCF7 breast cancer cell line: Evidence for an anti-estrogen effect of iodine,�

The protective effects of iodine against breast cancer have been postulated from epidemiologic evidence and described in animal models. The molecular mechanisms responsible have not been identified, but laboratory evidence suggests iodine may inhibit cancer through the modulation of the estrogen pathway. The effect of iodine on gene expression was analyzed in the estrogen responsive MCF-7 breast cancer line. Micro-assay identified 29 genes that were up-regulated and 14

genes that were down-regulated in response to the iodine treatment. This report represents the first gene array profiling response of a breast cancer line to iodine treatment. This work suggests that iodine may be useful as an adjunctive therapy for women with breast cancer.

Iodine and the developing fetus: If a pregnant woman has an underactive thyroid, the IQ of her child may be adversely affected. During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus relies entirely on the mother for thyroid hormone. Children between the ages of 7 and 9 whose mothers had untreated hypothyroidism scored an average of 7 points lower on IQ tests than children whose mothers had normal thyroid function. New England Journal of Medicine, 1999; 341: 549-555, 601-602.

Iodine and children: Studies in iodine-deficient areas of Italy showed that 11 out of 15 children developed ADD while studies in iodine-rich areas showed no ADD.

Nonabsorption: If your iodine uptake from eating foods cannot occur, the body becomes vulnerable to many ailments. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone secreted by the pituitary gland) can stimulate the body to increase iodine absorption. Oxytocin, progesterone, and retinoic acid also stimulate this effect.

Japanese women who live near the coast and consume traditional Japanese diets ingest on average of 13.8 mg of iodine per day throughout their lives and have extremely low incidence of fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer.

Fluoride and bromide compete with iodine, depleting the needed stores for normal body function. Ra-

dioactive forms of iodine in the atmosphere also compete with iodine receptor sites, causing thyroid conditions and associated sequalae.

The American consumer must be aware of the urgent need for iodine for normal body function and disease prevention. Iodine levels are dropping at an astounding rate in the U.S., and we are noting the consequences with the health crises which are so common today. Please do not overlook the importance of this essential nutrient. I urge that you get periodic checkups of your iodine levels as well as fluoride and bromide. It is a urine test that takes 24 hours to yield results. With all the constant bombardment that we must cope with on a daily basis from our air, water, food, and toxic exposure to outside influences, iodine/iodide can go a long way to preventing chronic or life threatening diseases. The simple test can change or save your life.

Abundance Is Envy-Free

B

eing envy-free is a key characteristic of a life of abundance. A scarcity mentality is symptomized by considering, subtly or overtly, that if someone is “getting more,” in whatever way, then there won’t be enough for me. Also it reflects scarcity to believe that if abundance is flowing into my life each day, each week, each year, then there won’t be enough for others. A scarcity consciousness leads to jealousy, envy, and other alienating qualities.

In abundance, we genuinely celebrate and appreciate the success of others. Win-win is natural, a life paradigm that emerges without separate endeavor from an abundance consciousness. Abundance, of course, doesn’t intrinsically relate to money, although abundance can flow through money—a billionaire could be immersed in scarcity consciousness. If the motivation for accumulating money and achieving prosperity is out of insecurity, anger, or to prove something, then that indicates a scarcity mentality. If I’m not intrinsically connected with myself as abundant, secure, worthy, powerful, then even if I get the externals, I still don’t experience abundance, because I have not connected with this quality of abundance as an intrinsic part of my being.

In fact, if I’m striving for externals in order to experience security, power, fulfillment, self-worth, then my implicit message is that I am inherently not secure, powerful, balanced, satisfied, etc. My core paradigm of life is founded in scarcity, in the misconception that I’m not complete in myself.

Looking at it from this point of view, a penniless person could be fully absorbed in the consciousness of abundance. It isn’t determined by anything www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

external. Abundance consciousness comes from living in a be-do-have paradigm. “I am powerful, abundant, secure, loving.” From that position, I may choose to live in a cave. From that position I may choose to accumulate massive wealth. Either way, my experience of life as lively, radiant, balanced, complete, successful—is not dependent on whether those things are there are not.

Moving into a be-do-have paradigm of abundance consciousness begins with the relationship we have with ourselves. If I am satisfied and content in myself, which is sattvic consciousness, or enlightened selfawareness, then there is no space for envying what others have, or for not wanting them to get what’s natural for them in their life. We celebrate the unfolding of life and the success and joy that comes to others. If we notice envy, jealousy, or any other component of scarcity mentality, then we can reflect

inside and see what is happening, find the source of that. My stance, in my personal efforts at self-realization, and in coaching and facilitating others, is that we are all whole and complete.

That completeness can be covered, distancing us from experiencing our intrinsic qualities. A diamond is always bright, pure and radiant, though it may be covered by a thin layer of dust, or thick layers of mud.

The process of transformation, then, is one of uncovering, unfolding the essential qualities of our authentic nature, as spiritual beings having a human experience, in connection with self and the divine.

Let us consider: in what areas of our lives we are living in abundance, and in what areas are we in scarcity?

And, with what qualities in ourselves do we need to connect in order to radiate abundance?

The Biointensive Method

The Biointensive approach is perfect for getting a productive garden going on the cheap. It’s been used in Kenya and elsewhere for that very reason. Based on the pioneering work of English master gardener Alan Chadwick and improved upon by John Jeavons, this method relies on double-digging, compost, and close planting of veggies to keep the soil loose, fertile, and moist. John Jeavons’ book Grow More Vegetables provides a wealth of information.

One point Jeavons emphasizes, and that most gardening methods miss, is the traditional garden’s need for constant additives from elsewhere in the form of soil amendments and fertilizer. On the other hand, the Biointensive method’s answer is: grow your own! Rather than telling you to

have a beautiful loose patch of soil, all ready for seeds or transplants.

With proper double-digging, the patch ends up about 6” higher than the ground around it. The fluffiness and tilth beats the living daylights out of anything you can do with a rototiller.

After this work, don’t step on it! Build in footpaths among the beds. Avoiding soil compaction is key to higher yields. When roots grow easily, plants thrive.

Once your bed is prepped (which is a terrible amount of work, ‘tis true), go ahead and plant it. You’ll use plantings that are significantly tighter than those of a traditional garden and go for a honeycomb/triangular grid, rather than square or rectangular spacing, in order to pack in the most plants possible. Jeavons says that in a tiny plot (just 10x10) as much as 500 pounds of food can be grown.

So, with frequent watering and weeding, this is a good high yield way to garden. When I tried it here in Marion County, I was quite pleased with the results, especially since I wasn’t sure how well double-digging would work in my sandy yard.

Today—six months after I dug the beds, and three months after I harvested them—the soil, though weedy, is still fluffy and loose. I’ll be weeding these beds and adding compost again for my fall garden.

Sufferin’ Summer Succotash

ith a nod to William Faulkner, it’s been “the long, hot summer.” It’s time to use garden vegetables and legumes that survived. If your garden didn’t make it, then fresh organic produce, frozen, or canned will do, but in that order of selection, please. Fresh is so much better.

Succotash has a debatable base recipe, but most use lima beans and corn. This iteration of the dish takes liberal license by including two different squashes and corns, both beans and peas, tomatoes, pearl onions, and mushrooms.

This recipe yields a family-sized 8 to 10 servings—have a large oven-ready serving dish ready for assembly.

Ingredients: 4-5 medium tomatoes 12-16 pearl onions 1 c. thick-sliced yellow squash 1 c. sliced zucchini 1 c. sliced baby bella mushrooms (optional)

1½ c. yellow corn kernels 1½ c. white corn kernels (shoepeg) 1½ c. baby lima beans 1 c. English (sweet) green peas (optional) 5 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 tbsp. chopped fresh dill ½ tsp. coconut oil Sea salt, to taste Lemon pepper (optional), to taste Shredded fresh basil, to taste Preparation: 1. In a large pot, bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. Add tomatoes and pearl onions to pot. Boil uncovered 5 to 6 minutes.

Remove tomatoes and onions; drain. Set aside.

2. Place coconut oil into a large skillet over medium high heat. Add a tablespoon of butter, then thick-sliced squash, sliced zucchini, and mushrooms to skillet. Stir and sauté for 3 to 5 minutes. Don’t overcook— leave slightly al dente. Remove from skillet, drain.

3. In a saucepan, bring to a boil corn, lima beans, and English peas. Again, don’t overcook; keep them firm. Drain, add 3 tbsp. of butter and set aside.

4. Pour corns, limas, peas, mushrooms, zucchini and squash into heating/serving dish.

5. Remove tomatoes’ skins, then core and seed; julienne or rough chop; add to dish.

Miss Mona’s Rules for Life

I

spent the past two months running a whorehouse ... the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which relocated to Ocala Civic Theatre for the month of September. The Chicken Ranch closes its doors on September 30, but the memory will live forever.

As Miss Mona, the madam of a strictly run establishment, I spent a lot of time laying down the law for my ladies. I now present my own set of rules ... life lessons I’ve learned from 20 years of theatre. I’m feeling philosophical now that one of my greatest theatrical experiences is coming to a close. Besides, it’s fall, and I always feel elegiac in autumn.

Shakespeare said all the world’s a stage. It’s true. The following theatre wisdom applies beautifully to real life:

It is never all about you. It takes a village to put on a show.

Everyone should have to work behind the scenes in some capacity at least once. You can never fully appreciate what those people do until you do it. In its own way, it’s just as satisfying to make magic happen behind the scenes as it is to perform.

If it’s your turn to take center stage, take it and enjoy it. Never take for granted that it will be yours again.

You may be the lead one time and then not get cast the next time you audition. That’s okay. It’s good for other people to get a turn. You aren’t going to be perfect for every role or show, and that’s not a reflection of your self-worth.

Never be a sore loser. If someone

else gets a role you wanted, congratulate her sincerely.

Listen to your fellow actors. Don’t just wait for your turn to speak.

If you see another actor struggling, for pity’s sake help him. Don’t hang him out to dry. We’re all in this together.

We all make mistakes. The thing is not to focus on them, but move on.

If you spend the rest of a performance fretting over your mistake, you’re going to be distracted and make more of them. And if you make a mistake, do not telegraph that to the audience. They probably don’t know you didn’t mean to do that. If you commit to what you’re doing, everything looks intentional.

Audiences are forgiving. They haven’t paid good money to sit in vindictive anticipation of your mistakes.

They want to be entertained. They want you to succeed. If you think of the audience as 400 people who are pulling for you, you will perform much better. Most of the time they’re thinking, “I could never do what she’s doing.”

When you go see a show, applaud like you mean it, and be enthusiastic and complimentary afterward. These people have worked hard. You can always find something nice to say.

That’s just good manners.

Sincere praise goes a long way.

Consistent kindness, support, and encouragement are life-changing.

Everyone’s a critic. There will always be someone who doesn’t like what you do or how you do it. But take criticism with a grain of salt.

Consider if it has any merit. If it does, learn from it and improve. If it doesn’t, dismiss it and move on. Many critics are frustrated performers who wish they could do what you’re doing.

You may be tired, sick, depressed, angry, or just plain not feeling it. But your present audience deserves the same level of performance as you give when you’re at your best, so leave your problems at the door. You owe it to your cast, your audience, your theatre, your show, and yourself to give it your best. Every time.

The show must go on.

Save the drama for the stage.

Nobody likes a diva.

A good attitude is as contagious as a virus. Be a positive force.

Be gracious, considerate, humble, and respectful. You can never say “Thank you” enough.

Stealing focus is rude. Don’t upstage others. Let them have their moment. Your turn will come.

There are no small parts. Everyone is important.

Being the lead is a big responsibility. Do it once and you will regard with new respect others who have done so.

You’re only as good as your last performance.

Everything looks easy until you try it.

Accept but don’t be defined by your limitations. You may not be the best singer, but if you do it with great style, people will think you are.

There is no sweeter feeling of triumph than proving, to yourself and others, that you can do something.

A show does not always have a happy ending. Neither does life. Deal with it.

Never, for more than about thirty seconds, think of yourself as “the star”... even if you are in the Lone Star State. You are part of a much greater constellation. Besides, sometimes the stars at night shine big and bright ... deep in the heart of Texas. And you know everything’s bigger there.

Young Artists and Scientists May Think Alike

S

everal decades ago, research suggested that science students shone at analytical thinking, while budding artists scored highest in tests measuring creativity and imagination.

Now, updated research with a group of British students at the University of Derby, published in the journal Thinking Skills and Creativity, finds no significant differences in the two groups’ problem-solving patterns.

Peter K. Williamson, on the faculty of business, computing and law, studied 116 senior undergraduates who took a series of tests measuring their skills at logical (convergent) and creative (divergent) thinking. They were asked to solve novel and imperfectly defined problems to determine their aptitude for finding imaginative solutions and to reveal their preferred learning styles.

“The findings of this study were in marked contrast to earlier published results,” Williamson reports. “Differences were found in preferred learning styles, but these were much smaller than reported previously.”

The research indicates that modern graduates are likely to have a more balanced educational profile than their specialized predecessors.

Williamson suggests that changes in educational policy—such as an increase in interdisciplinary studies and less formal, more flexible teaching styles—may help account for the contemporary shift.

BREATHE IN BREATHE OUT

M

ost of us are oblivious to our breathing habits. It’s simply something we do thousands of times every day without thinking about it, breathing in life-giving oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide.

Unfortunately, most of us do not breathe correctly. We tend to take 10 to 12 shallow, staccato breaths per minute, instead of the slower, deeper, oxygen-rich breaths that our bodies crave.

For centuries, specific breathing techniques have played an integral, healthful role in Eastern mind-body practices, including many forms of yoga and martial arts.

Today, the element of disciplined breathing associated with those arts are drawing the attention of Western medical research. Studies are showing that poor breathing has a negative effect on an individual’s health, while deep, optimal breathing can measurably improve body functions.

Dr. David Anderson, a senior investigator at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging, says that slower, deeper breathing may even help some people with hypertension lower their blood pressure, although he’s not yet sure exactly how it works.

“We know that slow, deep breathing relaxes and dilates blood vessels temporarily,” he states, “but we think

that it also helps our kidneys eliminate salt more efficiently, which would explain the drop in blood pressure.”

In his ongoing study, participants are asked to breathe in sync with tones generated by a special device. “The

device trains them to breath slower and pace breaths until they reach six to eight breaths per minute,” explains Anderson.

Other studies are also showing that varying our breathing techniques can be an effective tool in handling and managing depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. Medical doctors Richard Brown and Patricia Gerbarg have studied the effects of various breathing practices on the stress levels of tsunami victims, Vietnam veterans, emergency responders, and other groups that suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome.

“We started out by looking at specific yogic deep breathing techniques, such as Sudarshan Kriya yoga, qigong and others, but soon realized that combining elements of several of these techniques yielded optimal results,” remarks Gerbarg. She adds that professional breathing instruction is necessary to achieve their results, yet, “skillful control of breath patterns can be used to calm emotions, eliminate anxiety, stop obsessive worry, reduce stress over-reactivity and induce greater mental clarity and focus.”

The road to better health may well be just a few breaths away.

BREATHING EXERCISES

ecause breathing is something we can all control and regulate, it makes a useful tool for achieving a relaxed and clear state of mind. Dr. Andrew Weil recommends these three breathing exercises to help relax and reduce stress. Try each one to see how it affects your stress and anxiety levels.

The Stimulating Breath (or Bellows Breath)

The Stimulating Breath is adapted from a yogic breathing technique. Its aim is to raise vital energy and increase alertness. n Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed, but relaxed. Breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. n Try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. This produces a quick movement of the diaphragm, suggesting a bellows. Breathe normally after each cycle. n Begin with a maximum of 15 seconds. Increase subsequent practice sessions by five seconds or so, until reaching a full minute.

Done properly, this exercise brings a feeling of invigoration comparable to the heightened awareness achieved after a good workout.

system. Practice it at least twice a day. Do not do more than four breaths at one time for the first month of practice. Later, if you wish, you can extend it to eight breaths. If you feel a little lightheaded, do not be concerned; it will pass.

Once you develop this technique by practicing it every day, it will be a useful tool to use when anything upsetting happens—before you react. Use it whenever you are aware of internal tension. Use it to help you fall asleep. Everyone can benefit from it.

Breath Counting

Breath counting is a simple, yet challenging, technique used in Zen meditation.

Sit in a comfortable position with the spine straight and head inclined slightly forward. Gently close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Then, let the breath come naturally, without trying to influence it. Ideally, it will be quiet and slow, while depth and rhythm may vary. n To begin the exercise, count “one” as you exhale. n The next time you exhale, count two, and so on, up to five. n Begin a new cycle, counting one on the next exhalation.

Never count higher than five, and count only when you exhale. You will know your attention has wandered when you find yourself counting up to eight or higher. Work up to 10 minutes at a time.

The 4-7-8 Exercise (or Relaxing Breath)

This exercise is simple, takes little time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere, in any position.

Learn it first by sitting with your back straight. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth and keep it there. You will be exhaling through your mouth; try pursing your lips slightly if this seems awkward. n Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. n Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. n Hold your breath for a count of seven. n Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound, to a count of eight. n Now, inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times, for a total of four breaths.

Note that you always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth. The tip of your tongue stays in position the whole time. Exhalation takes twice as long as inhalation.

The time you spend on each phase is not important; the ratio of 4:7:8 is important. If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up, but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8 for the three phases. With practice, you can slow it down.
