LOCALS MAKE BOLD STATEMENT

ON AUSTRALIA DAY Nagambie locals and visitors made a bold statement turning up in large numbers for the annual celebrations at the Nagambie Rowing Club, showing their strong support for Australia Day to remain on January 26.

This was a clear response to the Strathbogie Shire Council's decision not to support the local town's celebrations on this day. Despite the council's decision, the Go Nagambie, the Nagambie Rowing Club and the Nagambie Australia Day committee worked tirelessly to retain the celebrations.

The event began with a sausage sizzle and drinks from 8 am, followed by entertainment from local musician Russell Turner and the Lakeside Larks choir. Go Nagambie President Lee Rowland mc’d the morning's Australia Day activity and introduced the day's guest speaker, former Victorian Premier, The Honourable Jeffrey Kennett, AC. Mr. Kennett spoke candidly about many issues, including the diversity of Australia and the opportunities it presents. He also highlighted how

complacency has crept into the country over the past 20 years and expressed his concern over the lack of good leadership in government and corporate bodies. He called out the 80 councils that did not support the Australia Day celebrations and emphasized that councils should focus on their own business and sport, and not promote division among people.

The event concluded with the presentation of the new Go Nagambie and Nagambie Australia Day awards, with Mr. Kennett presented the certificates and plaques to the worthy community recipients.

Lee Rowland thanked everyone concerned with the organization of the Nagambie Australia Day ceremony, including Go Nagambie, the Australia Day committee, Bloomin Natives, Russell Turner and the Lakeside Larks, the Nagambie Rowing Club, and all who supported the activity.

The Nagambie Australia Day celebrations ended with free water activities on Lake Nagambie.

Kudos to all those who supported the Nagambie Australia Day celebrations with such enthusiasm.

The award for Community Organisation - Nagambie senior Citizens The recipients of this award have provided the community of Nagambie with a variety of activities to cater for the interests of the seniors of Nagambie. The membership of this organization has increased to over 200 members this year and is still continuing to grow every week, showing the success the organization has had over the past 12 months. This organization contributes to the health and wellbeing of our senior members of our community, promoting lifelong friendships and connections.

Jill Branagan Secretary of the Nagambie Senior Citizens Club and Maureen Liddell President of the Club accepted the Community Organisation of the Year award.

Nagambie Young Achiever 2024 Flynn Bush The winner of this award has been a student of the Nagambie Primary School for the past 7 years, where he has just finished grade 6 and graduated primary school. This student was the school vice-captain and one of 4 student leaders of the school. His role included speaking at and running assemblies every monday morning, where he would speak confidently in front of 200 students. This student is known for his bright and positiveness, who made school a great place for others. This student is also a highly talented sportsperson, who was selected in the School Sports Victoria state cricket team, captain of the Victorian Country cricket team, and a member and captain of the Nagambie Primary School tee-ball team. For all his sporting achievements, this person is extremely humble, who never boasts about his achievements. He is a great role model to the younger students and a well deserved recipient of this award.

The Nagambie Young Achiever Award goes to Flynn Bush.

This person is very active within the Nagambie community, being a part of both the Nagambie Historical Society and being a member of the committee.

This person has been a resident of Nagambie for many years, and deserves to be recognised for the countless hours of work she has put in for the local community and surrounds. Described as a quiet achiever by her peers, the winner of the Nagambie Community Achiever award is Pat Moroney.

Nagambie Business Achievement Award - Rebecca Baker Pharmacy Nagambie Citizen of the Year Vincent Palmer This award goes to a person who is a volunteer of the Nagambie CFA, putting selfless dedication towards the local community, district and the state through his volunteerism. This person has been a member of the local CFA for 60 years, belonging to both the Nagambie and Wirrate brigades, whilst also acting as a mentor for the next generation of people coming through the CFA. The knowledge that the winner of this award has on firefighting and protecting the community in the circumstances of an emergency has been described as invaluable to pass on to future generations of CFA volunteers. His mantra on fire safety is known to be core to the operation of both the Nagambie and Wirrate brigades. A true gentleman of the Nagambie community and a well deserved recipient of this award. The Nagambie citizen of the year award goes to Vincent Palmer.

This award goes to a business who has provided the Nagambie community with excellent services for well over 16 years. Under the leadership of Rebecca Baker and following her fine example, the staff of this business are well known for their friendliness, professional advice and expertise which has led to them building an excellent reputation within Nagambie and surrounds. With a vision to excel in the health sector Rebecca Baker has expanded and adapted her business to meet the needs of the local community. The Nagambie Business Achievement Award for 2024 goes to Rebecca Baker acknowledging her applaudable contribution to the health and well being of the Nagambie community. Rebecca Baker collected the Business Achievement of the Year award.

Letter to the editor For over 20 years I have watched action by the Shire of Strathbogie and Council decision-making with regular and mounting disbelief. However you and your readers should open the Shire website and view the proceedings of the short extraordinary (in more ways than one) meeting of Council, meaning the new administrator, held on 23 January.

In answer to community questions submitted in advance, the administrator was told, and apparently accepted, that a major road project would commence shortly despite: 1. No permits yet obtained to remove an unspecified number of trees. “If we don’t get permits, we will change the road design as we go along.”

2. No idea of the flood-water origins and volumes entering the landscape where the road is to be built. “The precinct does not fall within the Goulburn River flood overlay, so we don’t know about the water which impacts near the road.”

3. No consultation with neighbouring affected landowners, despite the Shire’s meeting document saying that this had been done. “We will do that as we go along.” (The answer should have been “we told a blatant untruth and have been caught out as we did not think anyone would check with those landowners.”)

The meeting had the poorly-hidden real purpose of getting Shire authority to re-negotiate with a contractor who was engaged for road work in 2022 which did not happen, and re-engaged for work in 2023 which was also abandoned because the Shire had failed to obtain valid traffic counts, and not performed any assessment of road widths, speed limits, preferred road heights, etc., until the community expressed anger.

Has the Shire paid out anything to the contractor in advance?

If so when did this commence, how much has been paid, and for what? Would any sensible observer start any road project without answers to the three basic numbered points above?

Discussion needs to begin on the pros and cons of carving up Strathbogie Shire to neighbouring shires and the City of Greater Shepparton, and it needs to start right now. The current mess is an insult to all ratepayers, especially the exhausted community of Kirwans Bridge Alan McLean

Letter to the editor Australia Day 26 January - Change the Date Campaign Australia Day commemorates the date of the landing of the First Fleet in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British Flag and New South Wales became a British crown colony.

This date is termed by some as invasion day or more extremely, extinction or genocide day.

On the same date, the 26th January, but 161 years later in 1949, the Australian Nationality and Citizenship Act of 1948 was proclaimed and came into force under Labor Prime Minister Ben Chifley. Prior to this date anyone born in Australia was a British subject and travelled under a British Passport.

From the 26th January 1949 any person born in Australia, irrespective of their ethnicity and therefore including Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, became a citizen of Australia and carried an Australian passport.

However citizenship did not entitle all citizens to vote, as Aboriginals were excluded until 1962 when the Commonwealth Electoral Act was amended, under Liberal Prime Minister Robert Menzies, to allow Aboriginals to register on the electoral roll and to vote if they wished to do so.

The 1967 referendum is widely and wrongly considered to be when Aboriginals were given the right to vote as that right was granted in 1962. That referendum, which was overwhelmingly, carried by 91%, allowed for Aboriginal people to be included in the census and for the Commonwealth Parliament to make laws for Aboriginal people. It was not compulsory for them to register or to vote until 1984 when Bob Hawke was Prime Minister.

So why not keep the date and the name, Australia Day, but change the commemorative purpose of the day to reflect the day that all those born in Australia became citizens of Australia.

What do the National Days celebrate in some other countries?

India for example has two national days - Independence Day on 15th August to mark the end of the 190 year old British rule and Republic Day, also on the 26th January, to honour the enactment of the Indian Constitution in 1950. I was in Delhi on the 26th January 1962 - amazing and memorable parade of elephants, camels, military parades with equipment, street performers and numerous magnificent state floats.

The 4th July, Independence Day, is the national day for all US citizens. It was when the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and announce their Independence from Great Britain. Canada Day on 1st July celebrates the constitution of Canada becoming a fully independent country from being a dominion of Great Britain.

The Australian Constitution was enacted on 1st January 1901 and January 1st could be our “Independence Day” as in Canada but we already have a national holiday being New Year's Day. The change the date advocates will disagree but it was the date, in 1949, when Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders and all Australians became Australian citizens.

And the historical reality of Arthur Phillip’s landing in 1788, with convicts on board to establish a penal outpost and its near collapse from isolation, disease and starvation was hardly an auspicious start to our Nationhood.

Nagambie rings in the New Year with Spectacular Fireworks Display The Nagambie community bid farewell to the old year and welcomed the new with an awe-inspiring fireworks extravaganza that illuminated the night sky and warmed hearts across the town, drawing a crowd of thousands to Nagambie's scenic vistas.

In what has become a beloved annual tradition, residents and visitors alike gathered in parks and public spaces on New Year's Eve to witness the dazzling display of pyrotechnics that marked the transition from one year to the next.

Months of preparation and anticipation culminated in a spectacle that exceeded all expectations. Local volunteers and community groups worked tirelessly behind the scenes to orchestrate the event, ensuring that every detail was meticulously planned and executed.

Farewell to Avenel Meats For three decades, master butcher Scotty Reid has propped an antique bike outside Avenel Meats to signal when the weatherboard shop is open. The 1930s Malvern Star is an old butcher’s delivery bike , which is an iconic sight in the historic Bank St streetscape. This tradition came to an end in December with Scotty closing shop for the very last time.

Scott said he loved his time as the butcher for Avenel and genuinely cherished the friendships he has created with his customers, as well as being proud of the contributions he has been able to make, not only to Avenel but to surrounding communities.

In true Avenel fashion, a surprise farewell afternoon tea was organised on Sunday 21st January at Norwood Beauty, beside the butcher’s shop to say a HUGE THANK YOU for the wonderful support Scotty Reid and his family have given to the community over the years.

People of all ages attended remembering days gone by and to share the wonderful array of food provided by locals to honour the occasion.

Scotty and Neisha were presented with a handmade AVENEL metal sign which they can take away and hang wherever they venture as they embark on their next chapter of their lives.

We will sadly miss the Avenel sausage at the Avenel market each month, we will miss Scotty’s welcoming smile but most of all we will celebrate that we have all been able to share the Avenel Meats journey.

Draft Avenel Township Strategy released for feedback The Draft Avenel Township Strategy has been released for public feedback, following an extensive engagement process with Avenel residents and stakeholders.

The document will guide important matters affecting Avenel’s future as the township continues to experience rapid growth.

Avenel is rapidly growing, becoming a desirable township offering a rural lifestyle within a couple of hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD. The strategy identifies and assesses future land uses to meet growth and demand for housing, jobs, and services to ensure coordinated growth into the future.

Council has also provided an accompanying fact sheet to outline how the strategy addresses the community’s desire to maintain Avenel’s character.

Community consultation for the Avenel Township Strategy identified there was a strong desire to protect neighbourhood character.

Community members expressed the need to make sure there is not too much development so Avenel can maintain this character.

As a result, a number of measures have been outlined in the draft strategy to maintain the township’s character.

Administrator Peter Stephenson said, “We encourage Avenel residents and interested stakeholders to review this comprehensive document and provide their feedback to Council.

“The Strategy is the key strategic document used to guide land use and development for Avenel. It provides a long-term strategic planning framework that seeks to ensure Avenel’s community needs are meet by guiding social and physical infrastructure delivery, managing growth and enhancing Avenel to be an attractive place to live and visit.”

The summer teams events continued at the Nagambie golf Memorial ambrose cross country generously sponsored by Ben Cassar was played on a 20 hole composite course where imaginative shot making and quality execution are a must.

The course has seven par 3's requiring accurate wedge play and has many holes that wind across multiple fairways to reach the final destination.

The winning pair with a 7 under par 67-5.75-61.25 were the out of position specialist Shaun Bryant and the accurate one David Love, a flying start going 5 under par after 7 holes set up the round, a flat middle section followed but this was then rectified with a fine finish to win by the slimmest of margins .25 of a shot.

Steve Donnison and Gary Bow took out second place with some stylish golf, Donnison and Bow put together a 4 under 70-8.50-61.50 with some well crafted shots and great putting.

Going for four straight wins was third placed pair of Shaun Spicer and Jeremy Ezard, a quality title defence with 70-5.50-64.50 but the run is now over.

The seven nearest the pins went to David Love with a smashing strike on the 2nd, Dave Fullager cracking one to the 6th, Graeme Galvin hitting a top notch shot to the 8th, Graeme Keogh with a dazzling approach to take out the 10th, Shaun Spicer was red hot at the 13th, Dean Brown was sensational serving it up at the 18th and Jeremy Ezard with def touch to walk away with the 46m 20th hole.

Christmas eve golf will be played at Nagambie golf club next Sunday a Par event is on offer with the usual 8.00 to 8.30am hit off, on office duty is D. Love and in the bar J. Lodding.

Persistent Flooding Strikes Nagambie Again, Testing Resilience of Local Businesses Once again, the regions surrounding Nagambie have faced minor flooding, reminiscent of the devastating events of October 2022. This latest occurrence, happening on January 7-8, 2024, has reignited concerns and challenges for local businesses and communities.

The Wirrate Fire Brigade demonstrated proactive measures by relocating their equipment from the fire shed, avoiding the damage experienced during the 2022 floods. Lee Rowland from Go Adventure Nagambie shared their experience, stating, "We managed to move a significant portion of our equipment, and although the water levels didn't reach the same heights as in 2022, we still suffered losses, especially with pre-booked rowing camps having to be cancelled."

The award-winning Go Adventure Nagambie, based in Loddings Lane, faced significant setbacks once again. Despite ongoing recovery efforts from the 2022 floods, this event posed fresh challenges. Nevertheless, the resilient business is back in operation.

As the rains subsided, another concern emerged with increased snake sightings near residential areas.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and familiarize themselves with the signs of snake bites, especially in pets. Animal Emergency Service highlights key symptoms, including:

Mitchelton Winery and Nagambie Lakes Discovery Park faced temporary closures due to accessibility issues caused by flooded roads and bridges. However, both have since resumed operations, welcoming visitors eager to support local communities.

Meanwhile, in Seymour, heavy rainfall led to the flooding of Goulburn Park, underscoring the vulnerability of riverbanks during such events.

Residents of Seymour found themselves grappling with the consequences as the park, a beloved community space, became inaccessible due to rising waters.

Local authorities and emergency services sprang into action, working tirelessly to assess the extent of the flooding and ensure the safety of residents. Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, Seymour residents have once again demonstrated their resilience and

Funds on offer for Tiny Towns Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has urged small communities across the region to apply for funds under the Tiny Towns program.

The grants range from $5000 to $50,000 and are primarily for infrastructure projects such as playgrounds, community hall and library upgrades, hiking trails and splash parks.

Community and non-profit groups and councils in towns with a population of up to 5000 people can apply.

Ms Cleeland said the funding opportunities available could make a real difference for smaller regional towns across the electorate.

“Our smaller communities should apply for these grants as a way to help deliver local projects that benefit residents in our towns and help attract visitors,” Ms Cleeland said.

“These projects will directly benefit the smaller towns in our region, strengthening community connections and allowing for exciting opportunities for development and improved facilities.

“It would be great to see as many communities as possible benefit from this funding to ensure our regional towns continue to get the support they deserve.”

Towns within the Euroa Electorate have previously been recognised for tiny town tourism awards, including Murchison and Heathcote in 2023.

Drenched by a Breaking "Wake Surfing" Wave...

Most people in Nagambie have not yet heard of, and fortunately have not yet encountered, the new terrifying activity—"Wake Surfing.”

Unlike “Wake Boarding,” which is allowed in ski zones, and enjoyed by many without any danger to other water users, “Wake Surfing” requires a wakeboard boat to adjust its “hydrofoil” to lower the boat in the water and create a giant wave, that literally “breaks” like surf in the ocean. The wake surfer can actually let go of the tow rope and “surf ” down the breaking wave. This is no doubt a lot of fun, as is ocean surfing, but when the giant wave that is created breaks over other boats/water users, it is very dangerous, and not an appropriate activity for a narrow river.

We encountered one of these huge breaking waves on the Goulburn River on Thursday, 28 December, when we took friends and their 5 year old son in our 5m ski boat past Tahbilk Winery. On our return, we spotted a “wake surfer” coming our way.

Because we’ve experienced a few of these during the past 2 years, we knew what to expect! My husband Mike dropped our ski boat into idle and turned the boat to face the huge oncoming wave.

The approaching wave lifted the bow of our boat high above the water and as we crashed back down, the surf wave literally “broke” from above our boat,

drenching all of us—hair, clothes, seats and floor with now-pooling water. The 5 year old screamed, and then started crying. All of us were totally wet and shocked. The wake surfer did not stop to see if we were OK. If we had been in a smaller boat, a fishing tinny, or God forbid, a canoe/kayak, we would certainly have been swamped. If we had turned sideways, instead of head on (as boats should do when a big wave approaches), our ski boat would have rolled and thrown all of us into the water. There is no way for other water users to protect themselves when a wake surfing boat sends its breaking wave into your path….

Fortunately, most wake boat owners have some sense/consideration for other water users, and do not engage their hydrofoils to create breaking surf on the Goulburn River. They wait until they are at a surf coast area for this activity. Because some boat owners are idiots, wake surfing with breaking waves must be banned from the Goulburn River before someone is seriously injured or drowned.

Grant Opportunity Strengthening Rural Communities Federal Member for Nicholls, Mr Sam Birrell MP, is encouraging members of local organisations to apply for funding through the Strengthening Rural Communities grant program.

The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) has been funded by the Commonwealth to provide grants of up to $10,000 to support local organisations across regional, rural and remote Australia to uplift their communities under the Strengthening Rural Communities program (Rebuilding Regional Communities stream).

Mr Birrell said the program aimed to enhance and support the work of regional and rural

organisations and their members.

“Local organisations are the backbone of regional communities and consistently provide opportunities for people to come together whatever the event, sport, occasion or hobby they specialise in,” Mr Birrell said.

“From COVID to recent flood events our community groups continue to be disrupted leading to reduce numbers, limited fundraising opportunities as well as opportunities to organise community events and projects.

“These groups need to be supported to ensure they can bounce back to normal operation as well as remaining sustainable for the benefit of people living in regional and rural areas like Nicholls.

“These grants focus on a broad range of projects

and include funds for volunteer support, events and activities, enhancing community spaces, and developing services to support local vulnerable people.

Mr Birrell encouraged community groups to also look at other grants opportunities which may be available through the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.

Pitch My Project 2024/25 now open! (QR – PitchMyProject) Strathbogie Shire residents – it’s time to pitch your idea! Strathbogie Shire Council’s annual Pitch my Project initiative is now open for ideas to include in the 2024/25 Budget.

Pitch ideas must be Council-led and delivered with no direct allocation of funds given to community groups, clubs, organisations or commercial business.

Council has proposed an allocation of $300,000 for Pitch My Project as part of the 2024/25 annual budget. Each of the six Strategic Focus Areas within the Council Plan will be allocated $50,000.

This year we’ve also include the opportunity to pitch infrastructure projects.

Textile Recovery Program a success

In just the first month of operation, Council’s new Textile Recovery Boxes prevented 1,849kg of unwanted textile products going to landfill.

Council is running a series of sessions throughout the municipality giving residents the chance to book in a timeslot to meet with the Administrator Peter Stephenson.

The boxes landed at Council’s Transfer Stations in November last year and by 31 December, 2023, partner Upcycle4Better (U4B) provided the incredible data.

Bookings for these sessions are essential to ensure you secure your one-on-one 15-minute timeslot.

Residents have the opportunity to drop off any of their unwanted items at the Euroa Nagambie, Violet Town and Avenel Transfer Stations for FREE and it’s clear the program has been embraced.

Road Closures for Road Rehabilitation Works Creek Junction and Spring Creek roads in Strathbogie are closing for road rehabilitation works starting this week. The works will take place until mid-February, weather permitting.

The work will be carried out from Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm. There will be some changed traffic conditions including road closures during work hours. We request all road users to be aware of the changed conditions and follow the signs in place for detours. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works.

Bee-careful under the gums Well, probably like you, I was looking forward to a quiet Monday morning, after a rather hectic weekend.

Travelling back home from the township, south on High Street, I saw flashing red and blue lights atop an SES truck, parked in the centre of the service lane.

Further inspection saw four SES personnel, standing around, but back from a large limb, that had crashed to earth. The limb covered the service lane, nature strip and footpath, and had brought down the power and phone lines. Being a nosy-Parker, I like to say curious, I stopped and chatted with the SES members.

Bridget was the on-call officer and Trevor the training officer. Trevor looked more important with his two starred epilates, however he informed me that Bridget was the ‘scene’ Boss.

There appeared to be a hold-up, and when I enquired, was pointed to part of the limb. Wild bees were abuzz and looked like they had a well-established hive within the limb. No one was silly enough to aggravate

the hive with a chainsaw at this stage, and Trevor asked if I knew a local beekeeper? As it happens, one lives across the road from me, so Trevor was pleased to wait, while I went to see if they were available. In the meantime, the Power boys were in attendance, and shut the electricity off. Lucy, our bee expert, was only too happy to help, and gathered her specialist gear. A quick assessment of the scene identified a large wild hive in the fallen limb, and a second hive, still up in the tree. Beekeeping runs in the family for Lucy, having been schooled by her dad, Bill, over many years, and now an expert in her own right.

Anyhow, time to suit up. The thought was to relocate the actual hive to a nearby bush location, but it was too entrenched in the limb and you would have to destroy the hive in an attempt to move it, counterproductive? Normally you calm bees before handling or disturbing them, and smoking is the preferred method. As it was quite hot, Lucy opted not to light a fire in the smoker, but use her back-up sugar-water mixture. Not as good as smoke, but safer on hot days.

to clean each other, and ignore the humans, ‘poking the bear’. In went Trevor with his trusty STIHL and made quick work of the branch. The truck snatchstrapped the remaining part of the limb, off the road and onto the median strip. Road clear, bees safe. A few more well-placed cuts and the nature strip and foot path were cleared. That was the end of the SES involvement, hand over to the Power company, and the Council for final cleanup. Thank you Seymour SES and of course Lucy, for dealing with a potentially, complicated incident.

Strathbogie Shire Council’s annual Pitch my Project initiative is now open for ideas to include in the 2024/25 Budget.

Since we launched the Pitch my Project initiative, we’re proud to have funded almost 30 incredible ideas from our community.

As part of our commitment to continually improving our engagement, we’ll put the final decision making into the hands of the community through a participatory budgeting exercise.

We want our community to be involved in every step of the development of our 2024/25 Budget. This means we’re making sure we fund the projects and initiatives that matter to our Residents.

Kirwans Bridge update Has Council been successful in obtaining funding to secure a long-term future for Kirwans Bridge?

Council is continuing its advocacy efforts on securing funding for a long-term future for Kirwans Bridge. Council will apply to all relevant funding opportunities possible to seek State or Federal support for the bridge. We know we will need funding from the Victorian and Federal governments to complete the extensive structural repairs and strengthening works needed to reopen the bridge, or to build a new one.

What was the outcome of the recent Growing Better Regions Fund expression of interest application?

Council submitted an expression of interest to the Growing Better Regions Fund in August 2023. Council was notified in January, 2024 it would not be invited to progress to submit a full application.

Council is continuing to seek every funding opportunity possible to get State or Federal support for the bridge.

What is the status on Council’s insurance claim on the bridge following the October 2022 flood event?

The Kirwans Bridge Community Panel was advised in November, 2023 that Council would not receive a significant payout, however we are still negotiating a final settlement When will Kirwans Bridge reopen?

The bridge will remain closed until funding is secured and works are complete. We want to ensure the bridge meets the need of the community for many, many years to come. Working with the community panel, we have identified two options that will ensure the bridge remains open and is safe for the next 50 plus years: Option 2.1: maintains the existing single lane bridge by undertaking a full renovation including replacing the decking with timber planks and steel girders. It has a 25-year lifespan as is estimated to cost about $5.5 million.

Option 2.2: also maintains the existing single lane bridge by undertaking a full renovation and including replacing the timber decking with concrete deck slab. It has a 50-year lifespan and is estimated to cost about $6.5 million.

Council will need funding from the Victorian and Federal governments to complete works to Kirwans Bridge.

It means we need to continue to advocate strongly to share the importance of this bridge to the community and secure funding.

Nagambie residents encouraged to join LEAP Steering Group Strathbogie Shire Council is calling on Nagambie residents to join the Local EmergencyAction Plan (LEAP) Steering Group as part of the LEAPing into Resilience Project.

Strathbogie Shire Administrator Peter Stephenson said this is fifth township to take part and develop local emergency plans.

Currently, township of Strathbogie’s LEAP is in progress and Avenel, Euroa and Violet Town’s LEAPs have already been completed.

Learning and preserving aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages The Albanese Government is investing more than $14 million to support primary schools to teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages in classrooms across Australia.

Expressions of interest are now open for the First Nations Languages Education Program which aims to lift the uptake of First Nations language learning by young Australians and keep First Nations languages alive.

First Languages Australia will work with each community that submits an EOI to understand their local language needs, support them to identify partner schools and develop a language plan that maps the pathway for the placement of educators within schools.

First Nations languages communities who complete a language plan with First Languages Australia will then be invited to apply for a grant, when the grant round opens in early 2024.

The Program has been developed in partnership with First Languages Australia (FLA), the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

St Joseph's Primary Welcome Shania!

School Improvements

We would like to extend a huge welcome to Shania Anderson, who is joining our team as our 4/5/6 teacher in 2024. Shania is a former St. Joseph’s student and also completed teaching rounds here during her training. Over the last two years, Shania has been working in Melbourne at St. Margaret’s in Maribyrnong and St. John’s in Footscray. Shania is looking forward to being back in a small, country school with a focus on the local community.

Over the Summer break we have been making improvements to the inside and outside of the school. We completed our painting of the classrooms, with the Library getting a fresh coat of paint in January. We have also been working hard to maintain our beautiful, green learning and play areas, as well as adding new soft fall under our playgrounds. We are so excited to make use of these amazing spaces throughout the 2024 school year.

Our 2024 Student Leaders Nagambie Primary School has a long and proud history of student leadership. I enjoy chatting with the many former school leaders in our community and am proud of their ongoing strong connection with our school.

At the end of last year our then Gr 5 students were busy writing their speeches, which they made to both the whole school and Mitchell & Goulburn

Houses. Our aspiring Student Leaders also participated in interviews where they shared their ideas for making our school an even better place to learn and grow.

Nagambie Golf 22/01/24 - Mens Golf The Master and the apprentice shine at the Nagambie golf club taking out the top two spots in beautiful summer golfing weather. The Master Jeff Lodding fired a +4 to win Sunday's Par event with protege Rhys Shepherd finishing a close second with +3.

Lodding continues his spring/summer of good form to claim another win but also has mentored the young Rhys Shepherd along the way with Shepherd's golf more consistent than ever before, plenty of big things are in store for these two ahead. Rounding out the top three was Jeremy Ezard looking for his easy summer win while the pennant team were away but he was not quite up to it this year carding +1.

20 January - Womens Golf There has been no Women’s competition so far this year , due to wet weather.

There were 25 players for a round of Par. The winner was Deb Ringin with +3. R/U was Harold Rayner with +1.

Lindsay Hall managed N/P on the 8th.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Bob McAdam with a superb strike on the 8th, the man of the hour Jeff Lodding producing an exceptional shot on the 13th and Ben Cassar crashing his way onto the 16th. The coming week at the Nagambie golf club has plenty on offer a Friday Australia Day stableford will be played with a 12.30pm to 1pm hit off for both men and ladies, the event is sponsored by Australian Security and Solar and entries can be submitted to Ronda 0408 349 505 or David 0419 672 442, also next Sunday will be a stroke event and the 4th round of the summer trophy on office duty will be S. Bryant and in the bar J. Lodding

The Monthly Medal was also played for as well and saw Monica Hurley win both the day’s event and Monthly Medal with +2. Monica also won the Seymour Club Voucher.

The Nagambie golf course was closed for two days during the week after an exceptional amount of rain made a couple of the holes not accessible, but by competition on Sunday all 18 hole were playable and the course could not have been greener for the time of year with the players treated to some fantastic lies and conditions.

A good turn out of 24 players tee it up with 10 away due to the start of the Summer pennant series. The winning score of 39 stableford points was Shaun Spicer taking advantage of the lush fairways and neat surrounds to claim his first victory for sometime. Only one point back was Hugh Lawrence finding form to card 38 points, a freed up swing and solid ball striking helping him go two better than handicap. The third place finisher was the very consistent Jim Doyle with 37 beating great clubman Bill Leviston on count back also 37.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Jeremy Ezard hitting the narrow green on the 3rd and Glen Evans with a stylish shot to claim the 16th. Next week's golf at Nagambie will be a par event with J. Ezard on office duty and C. Roberts in the bar. The GMGA 2024 summer pennant season opening round was played at the Shepparton golf club where the Nagambie team had the unenviable task of taking on the hosts, unfortunately Nagambie lost 4 1/2 to 1/2 making there prospects for the remainder of the season difficult due to the shortness of the qualifying rounds, 3 in total.

Australia Day Weekend of Golf A big Australia Day weekend of golf was celebrated with a lunchtime sausage sizzle and 61 players tackling the Nagambie golf course on Friday with ideal temperatures and near perfect weather. Visiting golfer John Dalgleish from Lara won the Australian Solar and Security stableford event by amassing a very fine 41 points; it was a clear margin of 3 from runner up Shane Black on 38 points and third place Ben Cassar also 38 points.

There were nearest the pin prizes for both the men and ladies with Andrea Richards playing a stunner up to the 8th and visiting golfer Chris Casey showing what she can do on the 16th. For the men Hugh Lawrence was in good form from the 3rd, Mark Wursthorn impressive reaching the 8th, Joe Labas with a vintage strike onto the 13th and Gary Bow displaying some accuracy into the 16th.

Sunday's regular men's golf event was also played in typical Australia Day fine weather 31 players teed it up for the 4th round of the summer trophy. The winning score was Ben Cassar returning from his Friday effort to go two shots better and claim the win with 81-13-68 the lowest net score of the summer so far and one that may hang on with the course not producing its usual run for high handicappers to go low.

A long time in the wilderness has been runner up Chris Roberts but finally a score has been returned Roberts carded his best in some considerable time 92-23-69, filling in third place was David Love playing some consistent golf but a win continues to elude him.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Graeme Galvin with one of his usual thumps from the 8th, Lindsay Hall guiding a solid iron onto the 13th and Alby Seenan negotiating all the trouble from the 16th. Next week's golf will be a stroke monthly medal on office duty is J. Lodding and in the bar B. Cassar.

There were 29 players for a Stableford round. The winner was Steve Donnison with 21 pts. R/U was Matthew Wallis 19pts. Steve also managed N/P on the 8th.

28 January Nagambie Golf Club Ladies and Mid-week golf results 17 th and 18 th of January.

Wednesday the 17 th saw 12 ladies return after a month’s break for a Par round of golf.

The extra 9 hole event was won by Bev Brown with +3.

The balls for 18 holes went to Monica [+2] and Bev [+1] 9 hole balls went to Bev [+3] and Mon [+2] Nearest the pins 3 rd Monica and 16 th Claire Sampson on a return trip to us.

Wednesday the 31 st will be a Stableford event.

Thursday the 18th was only a field of 9 players for midweek, due to the rain which the course loved.

Stroke was played and the winner was Glen Evans with 41-8.5-32.5nett. N/p 13 th Hugh Lawrence.

Next week’s game is Stableford but players can’t hit off until 1.30pm due to the Dalhousie Vets game

Nagambie Cricket Club After defeating Katamatite in the final round of the season the women's side finished in third place on the ladder.

Last week they played Shepparton in an elimination final and it was a great spectacle with a large crowd in attendance at the Nagambie oval. Batting first the Lakers compiled a competitive total of 5 for 97 from their twenty overs.

Captain Kait Carracher blasted 38 and was supported by Kelsey Abbott 28 and Amber Langham 18. Shepparton were in control at 1 for 60 but the situation changed quickly after Sarah Villinger snared 3 wickets and Shelley Houston 2 wickets. The game was in the balance after Riley Alderton claimed the opposition's top scorer and with one wicket remaining Shepparton required two runs in the final over. An attempted run out led to an additional run with the visitors victorious at 9 for 98. It was a remarkable season for the Lakers squad considering only one player had played competitive senior cricket previously.

The second McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps day is being held at the clubrooms on Saturday February 3 from 1.00pm to 4.30pm. A fun afternoon is assured with guest speakers, entertainment and auctions. All proceeds are donated to the McGrath Foundation.

With three matches remaining the A Grade side is in fifth position and will need to find their best form to remain in finals contention. B Grade are out of the finals race but some of the club's promising juniors have gained valuable senior experience throughout the season. E Grade remain in top place and are well positioned to go one better than their narrow Grand Final loss last season.

The Nagambie/Old Students under 16 team are in second place in a competitive competition with one match remaining prior to finals action. The Nagambie/Tatura under 14 side have been promoted from the B section to the A section after dominating the lower grade prior to Christmas.

After one win in the A section they are now in second place. Who knows how? The under 12b side are in first place aiming for an undefeated season. Congratulations to Flynn Bush on his Australia Day Young Achiever Award for his outstanding cricketing achievements in the past year at club, Victorian Schools and interregional levels.

The Nagambie Cricket Club is proud to congratulate Flynn Bush, a talented young cricketer who has shown great dedication and skill on the field. Today, he was awarded Nagambie's Young Achiever of the Year for 2024 in recognition of his many outstanding achievements over the last 12 months.
