You could be forgiven for thinking you had arrived at a ski resort as you came into Nagambie for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Snowflakes danced through the skies, music played, and the scent of spiced mulled wine wafted through the air. Jacobson’s Outlook was transformed into a Winter Wonderland and was buzzing with hundreds of locals and visitors stopping to join in the festivities.

Kids of all ages donned blue skates and hit the synthetic ice rink, testing old skills, or balancing for the first time on unfamiliar blades. Laughter and smiles along with a few bumps and bruises as some spent more time sliding on backsides and knees than skating.

The Virtual Reality flight simulator was fun for those having a go, and for those watching! Not as easy as it looks, players flew over mountains and through valleys in the Swiss Alps with the aim of the game to fly through floating rings and collect

points. The winner with a score of over 1000 points won a $200 voucher from Go Adventure Nagambie, and runners up received vouchers for the Euroa Community Cinema.

The Magic Mirror Photo booth red carpet was busy with friends and families dressing up in hats and fun props snapping memories to take home with them.

With temperatures barely over double figures, if you weren’t working up a sweat on skates, Oliver’s Lane offered some relief from the cold with hot drinks, delicious hot soup and a variety of sweets.

If that wasn’t enough to warm you up the spiced mulled wine, courtesy of Mitchelton Winery, certainly did and really added to the winter vibe.

The Strathbogie Shire Youth group were invited with their pop-up music trailer to complement the event with fun tunes and some young local bands even had a chance to show off their musical talents.

The event was replicated in Euroa the following weekend and was also well attended with Jenny from Magyar’s Hill offering her warm, winter

spiced mulled wine.

The funding for these events was part of a State Government initiative to attract visitors to regional towns. Go Nagambie was pleased to assist the Strathbogie Shire in organising this family friendly, FREE and FUN event for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The Queen’s Birthday weekend Winter Wonderland event proved to be a success according to Nagambie’s High Street businesses with many reporting above average sales for this time of year.

The Andrews Labor Government is investing in Victoria’s agriculture workforce of the future, with an extra investment in agriculture education in secondary schools supporting more students to embark on a career in the primary industries.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced applications are now open for the Labor Government’s $5.5 million Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund which will support schools, industry groups and community organisations in Northern Victoria to inspire students into local agricultural careers.

The Fund will support Victorian schools and the sector to raise awareness of the opportunities available in agriculture, uplift agriculture teaching capability and offer more opportunities within schools for students to develop the skills they need to transition into modern careers in agriculture.

There are exciting times ahead for Nagambie in terms of economic and tourism development and we hope you will join us as we continue to grow.

Funding will be available for a range of agriculture education activities like designing programs, engaging with local industry, purchasing equipment and other needs schools have in order to deliver quality agriculture studies.

The Go Nagambie committee meets every 4 to 6 weeks with their Annual General Meeting usually held in October each year,

At the age of 16, with her parents Ronda purchased a holiday home at Bailieston East, moving into town with her own family in 1974.

Along with her husband John, Ronda has raised three children and owned and operated a successful local business. Throughout her time in Nagambie it is very clear that voluntary work within the community has given Ronda many rewards.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said, “This program is all about making sure students across Northern Vic have real-world opportunities to make the most of existing and emerging agriculture and horticulture career pathways.”

This boost will help meet the growing demands of the local agriculture sector – seeking innovative young workers with digital, business and marketing skills, as well as food and fibre entrepreneurs who can take products to international markets.

Minister for Education James Merlino said, “The future of Victoria’s nation-leading agriculture sector is bright – and we’re proud to be supporting more Victorian students to get involved in the modern, growing industry while they’re still at school.”

The SSAF is part of the Labor Government’s $50 million commitment over four years to the Agricultural College Modernisation Program, helping more Victorians pursue exciting careers in agriculture.

This program also supports the Government’s $277.5 million investment in the biggest reform to the senior secondary system since the inception of the VCE – a transformation that will set young Victorians up for brighter futures in vocational education and training, no matter what their dreams and goals are.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas said, “We want to attract the best and brightest young innovators who are keen to get into our agriculture sector – developing the food and fibre industry’s leaders of tomorrow and setting them up for exciting careers.”

The Statement was initiated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and given to the Australian people. We’re invited to listen, to learn and to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make a real change to their lives and to a re-imagined future for all of us.

Why have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders asked us for their help? Simple answer is that our well-intentioned policies, processes and resources intended to support First Nations peoples are not working. Remarkably, just three of our seventeen agreed targets of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap are on track. Only three.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s life expectancy remains ten years less than the general population.

"We, gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, coming from all points of the southern sky, make this statement from the heart: Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under our own laws and customs. This our ancestors did, according to the reckoning of our culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from 'time immemorial', and according to science more than 60,000 years ago.

This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or 'mother nature', and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors. This link is the basis of the ownership of the soil, or better, of sovereignty. It has never been ceded or extinguished, and co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown.

How could it be otherwise? That peoples possessed a land for sixty millennia and this sacred link disappears from world history in merely the last two hundred years?

With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood.

Proportionally, we are the most incarcerated people on the planet. We are not an innately criminal people. Our children are aliened from their families at unprecedented rates. This cannot be because we have no love for them. And our youth languish in detention in obscene numbers. They should be our hope for the future.

These dimensions of our crisis tell plainly the structural nature of our problem. This is the torment of our powerlessness.

We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country.

When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country.

We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice

enshrined in the Constitution.

Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self-determination.

We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history.

In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future."

Help us bring the Commonwealth Games to Lake Nagambie If you haven’t already heard Council is telling everyone they can that we’re ready, willing and able to host rowing on Lake Nagambie in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Council is advocating to the Victorian Government to first include rowing as a sport in the games and then commit to hosting it at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre.

Although rowing is an optional Commonwealth Games sport – it is one of Australia’s oldest and most successful sports and we believe the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre provides the perfect place to feature this event.

Talk to a Planner Last week we launched a new initiative called ‘Talk to a Planner’. The initiative will see our planners hitting the road and making themselves available in townships across the municipality to offer advice and information and seek feedback on the current Planning Scheme Review.

Members of the community can book in a time to speak to the planners who can provide advice and information on the local planning scheme and state planning policy.

We will also be seeking feedback on community planning priorities and how we can improve the Local Planning Policy to better meet the community’s needs.

Richo’s Clothesline Service Until the 19th century, the normal way to dry laundry was to drape clothing over bushes or for the adventurous a scented bush would be carefully selected, or perhaps a simple line hung between two posts was used.

The rotary clothes hoist soon followed with a clear advantage of metres of clothesline contained within a small area.

Today, we still see clothes hoists popping up in backyards everywhere but there are alternative models for laundry to be hung indoors, beneath verandahs, all of which allow you to peg out the damp items with ease. Meet James and Georgina Richardson, who now call Avenel home and are the owner of Richo's Clothesline Service.

James and Georgina have lived in regional Victoria and NSW managing agricultural properties. They have 3 adult sons and seven grandchildren with many of their family members living in the region.

“I grew up on a large country property which I very much enjoyed and is probably why my selected career pathway was to manage big Agricultural properties in Victoria and NSW for 30 years,” said James.

Prior to moving to Avenel James and Georgina lived at Inverleigh.

“We lived in a small country town, similar in size to Avenel, called Inverleigh which is 25 minutes west of Geelong. We were attracted to Avenel because we like country living and small friendly communities and it’s such an attractive setting.

“As our children and grandchildren all live in Melbourne we wanted to stay in close proximity to them so they could visit often.

Prior to moving to Avenel James and Georgina owned a Clothesline Sales and Installation business servicing the Geelong area which included private clients as well as major building companies.

“We sold this business prior to moving to Avenel and there seems to be no specialised service of this kind in our current area.

Richo’s Clothesline Service will supply and install new clotheslines and also repair, rewire and replace spare parts.

“I’m also happy to install clotheslines already purchased by the clients,” said James.

“There are many different types of clotheslines available and different areas to install them - rotary, wall mounted and retracting models and they can be mounted on verandahs and outside walls and also laundry walls and garage walls.

James offers reasonable rates and honest quotes and advice sharing his 10 years experience in the business but there are challenges in setting up businesses when you are new to the area.

“The challenge is trying to become known, trusted and valued in our new area. We will service the Avenel, Nagambie and Seymour areas. We recommend the wholey Australian made quality clotheslines for their longevity,” said James.

With electricity prices rising and the trend set to continue, Richo’s Clothesline Service is likely to be in demand with people choosing the environmentally conscious alternative to using electric tumble dryers.

“Since the pandemic and people being at home more, many have realized with the increased power prices, using a clothesline not only saves on power bills but it is also a much more sustainable way of drying clothes.

Children’s outdoor fun on its way for Whroovale Residents of the Whroovale estate north of Nagambie are very keen to have children’s outdoor equipment in the open space area bordered by Kheminda Crescent and Jean Claude Avenue.

Since engaging with residents, Strathbogie Council has a greater direction of what the community want in this open space beyond the existing path and several advanced trees.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Laura Binks thanked the Whroovale estate residents for their quick responses to the survey.

“Our Share Strathbogie site lit up when we put out the QR code directing people to our interactive engagement hub to receive their suggestions,” Cr Binks said.

“Overwhelmingly, most of the 112 people who responded to the survey suggested they wanted a fun area with children’s play equipment as well as some green space and a small percentage wanted some fitness equipment.

“The plan now is to install an irrigation system through the site and at the same time we will be going to tender for a company to design and construct the play structures,” Cr Binks said.

The play equipment will be directed towards the three to eight year age group, and it is expected that the equipment will be installed by the end of the year.

Improving rural health outcomes Strathbogie Shire Council Rural Outreach Worker Brian Hill is encouraging those in need to reach out to link in with local support services.

After joining the Council in the role last year, Mr Hill has attended several outreach events, regularly visits the Euroa Cattle Sales as well as popping up in other areas across the Shire.

Mr Hill recently attended the First-Time Parent Groups and Outreach Community Forum in Euroa as events ramp up following on from COVID-19.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks encouraged people to reach out and get in touch

to be referred for Mr Hill’s services.

“We encourage anyone who feels like they may need some support to seek help through our Rural Outreach worker Brian Hill,” Cr Binks said.

“Brian provides a valuable link between rural community members and various support services and agencies so you can get the appropriate assistance for any issues you may be facing.”

Cr Binks said Mr Hill could also link people in with new men’s health checks, conducted by Primary Care Connect.

“The health checks are now available in Euroa, by appointment, through the AgriClinic Program.

“The checks only take 90 minutes and you can

check a number of health factors including your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, hearing, vision, your skin and much more.

“We know statistically that rural men do not often seek out preventative health measures so this is a fantastic way to check in on your health to make sure you can continue to strive and work in a rural setting.

“You can also find out tips on how to improve your health outcomes, learn how to keep you and your family safe and obtain suitable personal protective equipment.”

Career pathways for young people: discovering local bush businesses Go Nagambie Youth Futures Project is encouraging young people to look to local jobs that will provide them with careers, opportunities to stay locally in their community and linking local businesses to their next generation of employees.

This project is discovering a multitude of interesting and diverse jobs around Nagambie for local young people - in horticulture, equine, customer service, hospitality and retail, construction, trades, manufacturing and resources.

The Strathbogie’s region is flourishing. Nagambie businesses have diverse markets, products and services and are investing in the future of the region. Over the medium term, businesses are estimating a 20-30% increase in jobs across a wide range of industries, creating wider opportunities for local young people to have fulfilling careers.

The opportunities are there for the outdoor work life or inside.

However, local businesses are struggling to recruit

staff. The recruitment challenge is very real with the lure of Melbourne, encouraging young people to look local for their careers and accessing young people as they leave school or providing work experience. Schools, parents and friends play a critical role in job choice and telling of young people about jobs – word of mouth.

As part of this project we are undertaking a local business survey and talking in-depth to a diverse range of businesses looking to the future such as Fowles Winery, Swettenham Stud and Golden Camel Mining. Businesses are invited to to complete the survey at https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/27LSFFV

Businesses are looking at other ways to connect with young people - letting young people know about the job gems using social media and demonstrating work is fun. As well, businesses are seeking to collaborate with schools, TAFE, other businesses and institutions such as Puckapunyal or tertiary Colleges. While at work, local businesses provide entry-level job training, work buddies, professional skills development and support staff obtaining qualifications.

This project has been funded by the Bendigo Bank and local business owners.

Just three businesses in hospitality/winery, thoroughbred studs and gold mining have potentially 100 new jobs around Nagambie. These businesses describe themselves as ‘hotspots of experience’ for young women and men with opportunities for promotion and rewarding jobs.

They provide careers into the future such as stud manager, looking after the environment through sustainable agriculture and mining, working with the latest technology and manufacturing processes, and delivering customer experiences in hospitality and wine.

Given the scale of Fowles Wine, career pathways are available for young people to socialise while at work, gain skills, earn an income whilst having a rewarding job. Young women and men also have the opportunity at Fowles Wine to use their technical and professional skills such as in viticulture, wine making, administration, retail, marketing and hospitality.

Fowles Wine Fowles Wine is a fully integrated business from the vineyard, to wine making and farm to table dining. Staff shortages are experienced across the business as Fowles Wine seek to cater for the growing demand in hospitality and wine.

Young people over 18 years old will thrive with an appreciation of wine, teamwork, service and safety and the confidence to learn at Fowles Wine.

The Community Capacity Building Workshops will be held online covering two topics across four workshops.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the first workshop Valuing Our Volunteers provided a simple framework for best-practice volunteer management and support.

“We want to support community groups, so their volunteers have a great experience working with them, and they get the best from their volunteers,” Cr Binks said.

“The session will cover how to recruit the best people to do the best job for your organisation, the essentials of supporting your volunteers to be their best and best-practice people management for working with volunteers.”

Cr Binks said the second topic Fundraising 101 would focus on a simple step-by-step approach to strategically fundraising organisations.

“This session covers how to assess your needs, and the best approaches to fundraising, how to develop an effective fundraising plan to help you move forward and where to go if you need further help to find funding,” Cr Bink said.

Thefts continue to be unreported Nagambie Police are aware that a number of dishonesty offences, namely thefts of livestock and thefts from building sites are going unreported.

In recent weeks, local police have been made aware of incidents of theft, but only after they have proactively approached builders in the new estates to try and establish as to whether or not thefts are taking place. Builders have told police that they have had materials delivered and stolen the same night, delaying projects and incurring extra costs.

These victims have told police that they are either too busy to report the thefts, or that they see no point as they will never get the materials back.

Nagambie Sargeant Bob Derrett said, “At times, I can see their point regarding not wishing to waste time reporting these thefts. My issue is that if we don’t know that a problem exists, or exactly how big a problem is, then we will never be able to tackle it.

Proactive policing is guided by identified issues. If we know that there are thefts taking place, we can realign our local priorities to try and combat that issue”.

Police are also aware that the same thing is happening with stock thefts and general farm crime. Police are aware that thefts are occurring, but only find out when they hear it through third parties, or in general conversation with victims months later.

“I think farmers and tradies are similar in that they don’t get stressed by the little things, they just get on with it. Resourcing and patrol strategies are all based on intelligence, if we know an issue is developing, we can take steps to try and prevent it.

I urge anyone in these situations though, to call the police assistance line on 131444, it’ll cost you a few minutes but in the long term, it will help us better utilise our resources,” ended Sargeant Derrett.

The strategy aims to encourage economic growth in the Shire and will outline a clear economic focus for the key townships.

Maintenance works to protect Nagambie’s heritage water tower Maintenance works are underway on Nagambie’s historic water tower to help preserve the almostcentury-old building.

Safety fencing has been installed around the site while work is taking place on the site, which is expected to last several weeks.

Works involve assessing the tower’s top, where specialists abseil up and down the tower to inspect the concrete mortar to determine if any repairs are

needed. At some times during the works, Telstra may need to turn off their telecommunications array at the top of the tower to ensure safety while works are underway. We’ll work with Telstra to ensure residents are notified ahead of any planned service changes and any potential interruption is limited.

The Nagambie Water Tower was built in 1928 by General Sir John Monash’s company Reinforced Concrete and Monier Pipe Construction Co Pty Ltd.

The Greening Euroa Project is an innovative community driven project that will use recycled water to irrigate public green spaces during the summer months.

The committee is seeking $3.8 million for implementation and construction.

The proposal is the first of its kind in Victoria.

It’s climate smart, cost efficient and community inspired.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor, Cr Laura Binks, said all the project needed now was a $3.8 million funding commitment to make it a reality.

"We’re advocating to State and Federal governments for the funding, but we’re also asking the community to join our campaign and help spread the message,” Cr Binks said.

The funds will allow wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water’s treatment plant to be upgraded from Class C to Class B and piped underground to storage tanks throughout our town.

From here it will be available for pumping onto our many public ovals and sports grounds.

“The Greening Euroa Project is being driven by a committee of passionate locals who came together to find a way to lessen the impacts of chronic water shortages in a rapidly warming climate,” Cr Binks said.

“During the past three years our committee has investigated the possibility of using recycled water to irrigate our public green spaces during our dry summer months.

“We know having green spaces in times of drought is increasingly important to our community. It is essential to community health and wellbeing. Our challenge was to find a way of creating green spaces in a sustainable way. But it’s a challenge we have overcome.”

Letter to the editor Men’s Health Breakfast Applauded Full marks to the organisers and sponsors of the Men's Health breakfast held at the Rowing Club last Friday.

It was a well presented, enjoyable and, above all, informative event despite being postponed twice due to Covid.

Well chaired by Cr David Andrews and the scene expertly set by Cr Reg Dickinson, the two guest speakers excelled.

Peter Strange from the Bendigo Men’s Health Clinic covered a number of sensitive health issues with compassion, knowledge and encouragement and the motivational speaker, Nathan Burke, spoke with humour and gusto but nevertheless delivered an inspiring and challenging message.

Both identified the chronic failure of too many men to have regular health checkups and their reluctance to seek help from friends or professionals when they feel a bit down.

Informed and Inspired at Nagambie Healthcare’s Men’s Health Breakfast Men and women from across the region were left informed and inspired following the Nagambie Healthcare’s Men’s Health Breakfast.

After postponing the event in 2021 due to Covid 19 lockdowns and restrictions it was quite an achievement to finally deliver such a successful event. More than 100 guests attended the breakfast at the Nagambie Rowing Club on Friday 17th June enjoying a beautiful breakfast, coffee and delightful company.

Councillor David Andrews MC’d the event and welcomed Mayor Laura Binks, Cr Reg Dickinson and all attendees to the breakfast.

Strathbogie Shire Councillor and GO Men (Nagambie Men's Social Group) advocate Reg Dickinson opened the morning and provided an overview of the shires programs supporting health and plans into the future. Overview of the GO Men group and their social gatherings over a game of bowls and coffee, opened the invitation to anyone who was interested in attending to come and see him or call 0408 989 871 The impressive line up included guest speaker, Peter Strange, a Men’s Health Nurse Practitioner with Bendigo Community Health Services. Peter consults at a Men’s Health Clinic designed for men and is passionate about providing services that are male friendly.

Peters down to earth, approachable demeaner and relatable content, engaged the crowd while covering general health, coronary health, sexual disfunction and mental health.

Former AFL footballer, Nathan Burke spoke on his experiences as an elite athlete and how that has translated into achieving peak performance. His lessons on mindset, maximising potential, attitude and leadership were delivered at a level for everyone to understand.

Nathan Burke is the current coach of the Western Bulldogs team in the AFL Women's competition.

The guest speakers covered a range of topics with a focus on Men’s Health but the information was relevant to both men and women of

all ages. Statistically Australian men are more likely than Australian women to get sick from serious health problems, with associated mortality rates much higher than women; men die in greater numbers than women from almost every non-sex-specific health problem. Male deaths outnumber female deaths in every age group apart from the over – 65 years and that it is stated that is only because so many men die before reaching retirement.

Compared to women, Men visit the doctor less frequently compared to women, they have shorter visits and only attend when their illness is in the later stages. Significantly men who live in rural and remote areas of Australia are designated as being “high risk”. Coronary heart disease, Mental Health and sexual health (dysfunction, continence and sexually transmitted diseases) are prominent conditions that men of varying ages face. Tools are available to help men live with an illness, minimize the effect of an illness or to be free of the illness.

The Nagambie Healthcare’s Men’s Health Breakfast has played a very large part in improving awareness of overall health of Nagambie’s males, both young and old. Councillor David Andrews closed the formalities by thanking the event sponsors and organising committee with all attendees receiving a show bag filled with goodies to enjoy.

ST JOSEPH'S PRIMARY SCHOOL On Friday the 10th of June, our students enjoyed some yummy hot chips as a reward for a great term of work so far and also because of the cold, Winter weather. James said that he enjoyed the chips because they were salty. Ruby said she enjoyed having tomato sauce on her chips.

Lewis said the chips were nice and warm, so they warmed him up.

This term in Art we have been working on a giant snake I’m! Using Autumn colors and symbols that are important to us. We created our own symbols representing things like family, our favorite foods and hobbies.

The inspiration behind this was this term's theme, ‘Who Was Here First’. We have also been looking into the Rainbow Serpent and Dreamtime stories.

Exploring the Goulburn River & Ranges Region - MOVE is a destination to explore Just 30 minutes from Nagambie, behind the doors of the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) you will find gleaming vehicles, polished chrome, rows of legendary pieces of transport and an extensive Clothing Collection.

MOVE is one of the largest regional museums of collectibles in Australia and unique for its variety. The not for profit organisation began as the Shepparton Motor Museum and Collectibles in 2012 and has since evolved to become MOVE in 2021. MOVE aims to tell the story of the evolution of modern motoring globally, as well as Australia’s automotive history. Almost all vehicles on display are on temporary loan, we have an amazing and generous network of collectors and enthusiasts who share their machines with us.

The Kenworth Dealer Pavilion at MOVE houses around fifty trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles of varying ages. Loel Thomson Costume Collection Formerly of Noorilim, Loel Thomson OAM spent close to 40 years collecting Australian fashion, dating from the time of the First Fleet and continuing through to the present era. The collection has grown to over 10,000 pieces of clothing, jewellery, and accessories. For her service to community history, Loel was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019. The collection also includes an extensive research library, with books and magazines on every conceivable topic relating to fashion and costume. Students are welcome to utilise this by appointment.

Clayton Gramophones, Telephones and Radio The late Dick Clayton was an avid collector and historian, as well as being a constant presence across radio, tv and telecommunications industries in the Goulburn Valley. Explore the extensive collection of gramophones, telephones, and radios that has been donated by the late Dick Clayton’s family.

Avenel Primary It has been a fabulous School Sport Victoria cross country season, with record numbers of students being selected to compete at The Ranges Division and Hume Region championships. Twenty students ran at Yea a few weeks ago, with twelve of those qualifying for Regionals last Friday.

Congratulations to Brodie, Zuri, Tom, Billy, Ruby S, Max, Akiyah, Xavier, Aria, Chloe C, Iylah M & Isla N – just making it to Regionals and to compete against students from over 200 other eligible schools is a

great achievement. From this team Gr 4 student Aria and Gr 5 student Brodie have been selected to compete at State early next term – what a fabulous achievement.

Congratulations to Brodie and Aria who have qualfied for the SSV State cross country championships.

Local Sport Update Nagambie Men’s Golf Visiting golfers showed the locals how it's done by walking away with a win and runners up award in Sunday's stableford event, once again the course played long with precision ball striking required for each and every shot. Scott Gilchrist from the Hidden Valley golf club was the winner with 37 points. going round with 3 others from Hidden Valley Gilly showed his mates how to get the job done. Runner up was Don Bubeck of the Euroa golf club, Don has been a visitor many times and knows the Nagambie course well a crafty 36 points was posted. The best of the local brigade was Peter Lawrence knocking out 36 points and finishing third on count back.

Nagambie Golf Club Shirley Dean 2022 Results There were 38 players on Friday 17th June for the annual Shirley Dean Competition. Clubs represented were from Nagambie, Seymour,Heathcote, Mooroolbark , Warragul , Euroa, Avenel , Kilmore and Shepparton.

What a great day we all had with the weather being fairly reasonable. The ladies from Shepparton took out all the winning places, well done Shepparton teams.

It was always going to be a challenge against Seymour today, but all the kids have clearly learnt something after playing them last time, because they were obviously all up for that challenge.

Every team today showed they don’t know how to give up, and that can especially be said for the u13 netballers, who came away with their first win! They’ve worked hard, and it’s all finally coming together.

If they can show what they’re capable of for the rest of the season, there will definitely be more wins ahead.

The u11 netballers also showed improvement in a tight tussle, but couldn’t quite get across the line.

The days are getting colder, the rain is more persistent and the roads are getting wetter. It is becoming more difficult for Council road crews to keep up with the grading. There are three graders owned by the Shire and they are constantly at work, on a rotational roster, however with the current conditions it has become more difficult for them to get jobs completed. Please be patient and understanding, they are doing their best.

Work continues on our advocacy to have rowing included on the Commonwealth Games agenda and to have Nagambie as the preferred location. Ballarat has now thrown its hat in the ring, so the competition is hotting up and our Mayor and CEO recently met with the Minister for Fun, Martin Pakula, to push our case. There are others also working behind the scenes, however it promises to be a long haul.

Last Friday Nagambie Healthcare held a Men’s Breakfast at the Valley. It was well attended (more than 100 by my estimation) and guest speakers included Peter Strange (health care nurse), Nathan Burke (former St Kilda champion and current coach of Western Bulldogs Women’s team) and myself (representing the Shire and GoMen health group). It was a fantastic morning, very positive vibes and lots of information on how to seek help and valuable advice on changing our thinking, for the better.

Major sponsor was Bendigo Bank and Australia Post provided a generous grant. There will be another breakfast in November.

A reminder that I am available every Thursday from 10am until noon, at the Valley. If you have any issues to discuss or just want a chat, call by, the coffee and conviviality are great. Two committees I am on are the Kirwans Bridge group and the Waterways. Progress is being made, the Waterways are in the process of setting and/or readjusting speed limits and rules. Before they can be implemented the committee’s recommendations have to be approved by Waterways Victoria and there will be several speed limit changes made before next summer. The Kirwans Bridge committee has been working

hard, the major hurdles right now are approval from Heritage Victoria. At the next meeting there will be an expert speaking to us about the processes involved.

A big shout out this week to Joe Gattuso. Joe was recently elected to be the new president of Nagambie Bowls Club. He is a tireless worker around the club and always does it with a smile on his face. I am told he is pretty good on the violin too, which helps to make up for his shortcomings on the green! Your shout Joe. That’s it for this issue. Until next time, stay safe.

Tahbilk Junior Football Netball Club The u9’s had their best team game today. Everyone put in and played a part.

The u11’s also proved a tough opponent, not letting Seymour get any easy possession’s.

And the u13’s showed great improvement from last time, putting loads of pressure on their opponents, tackling better than they have all year, and despite it not showing on the scoreboard, made it a really tough, hard fought game.

Crowds return to the ‘G for record-breaking Big Freeze FightMND’s Big Freeze continues to raise awareness and much needed funds to 'beat the beast' with the charity today raising more than $2 million in community funding, before the Federal Government added $4 million to a record breaking tally.

Contributions also came from the Victorian State Government, adding $250,000 to the cause.

The charity is so thankful to the Australian public for their ongoing support, with the '$2 million by Monday' campaign reaching it's total before the end of the first quarter at today’s clash between the Collingwood Football Club and Melbourne Football Club.

It was a sea of blue Big Freeze beanies as nearly 80,000 fans rallied together, in a strong show of support for football legend Neale Daniher’s charity, FightMND. FightMND Campaigns Director, Bec Daniher said, "The Big Freeze is back, and we are so fortunate to have such incredible support from across the entire community – we turned the MCG blue!

“While there may be two clubs playing out there today, it’s clear that there is one team, unified and determined in the fight against this Beast of a disease.

“We are constantly humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity of the Australian public. To

reach our $2 million target before quarter time is amazing and we can’t thank everyone enough.

“We know that our job is not done until we defeat this Beast, but with every dollar raised today, we’re taking another step closer to a cure.

“To have Dad by my side today is very special – he is honestly my hero. Marching with him, standing with him at the slide, and then being on the ground with all his grandkids running around is a memory I'll treasure for a long time. He is so strong, positive and determined."

It marks the first time that the Big Freeze match has been played at the MCG in two years.

Neale Daniher AO, who is battling MND, was joined by his family before the game at Federation Square to lead Melbourne FC fans in the March to the ‘G along Daniher’s Way. Not to be outdone, Collingwood fans converged on the MCG from the Collingwood Community Festival at the AIA Centre that also played host to a Big Freeze netball game between Collingwood and the Melbourne Vixens.

Neale and Bec Daniher were on hand to send the celebrities down the slide into the icy pool – which took 600 bags of ice to fill and was a cool -3 degrees.

Australian Open Champion Ash Barty said, “This day is for him [Neale] and this day is because of him. The way Neale can bring awareness to an incredible beast of a disease, and the way he is able to fight inspires not only Australians but people all the way around the world. He’s created an opportunity for us to do our part in helping find a solution, so this is all for Neale. There are incredible people who want to be involved because he is an exceptional man.”

David Neitz dressed as Braveheart said after hitting the ice, "That was tough, that was colder than I thought it was going to be Braveheart was an absolute nod to Neale; he is the bravest man I know and what he is doing to fight this beast and inspire so many people is enormous.

This is right up there as a special moment to be here at the MCG with Neale fighting for his cause."

Broadcast on the Seven Network nationally, the Big Freeze 8 festivities kicked off at the ground from 2pm with a performance by Chris Cheney from The Living End before 10 courageous celebrity sliders faced Australia’s coldest ice bath.

Funds raised through the Big Freeze are invested in vital MND research to find effective treatments and a cure for the terminal illness which has an average life expectancy of only 27 months.

Decked in costumes based on their favourite movie moments, this year’s star-studded cast of sliders (in sliding order) included Eddie Betts (Black Panther), Rhonda Burchmore (Poison Ivy), Andy Maher (Radar – M.A.S.H), Jakara Anthony (Katniss Everdeen), Hamish Blake (Elsa, Frozen), Terry Daniher (Crocodile Dundee), Justin Langer (Rocky Balboa), David Neitz (William Wallace, Braveheart), Bec Maddern (Trinity, Matrix) and
