Lakers Women’s Football Team 2023 W ell known local identity, Rylee Alderton’s vision to provide an opportunity for women with a passion to play football in a Nagambie based team is coming to fruition after she put out a call on Facebook to test what interest there may be in forming a women's team in 2023 and the response was overwhelming.

"Within the first four hours I had 20 players, and after 24 hours the response climbed to 33 players eager to sign up with another 5 considering the proposal," Rylee said. There has been an appetite to establish a women's team in Nagambie for some time and perhaps this will see a return to neighbouring clubs following suit. Earlier this year on Australia Day in Avenel the Community award recipient was given to the 1956 Avenel Ladies Football team who played against Nagambie. The Nagambie Lakers Women’s Football Team is working towards having the team ready for the 2023 season with the focus being on providing opportunities for as many women and girls as possible. "I've got a few ladies approaching their forties, and I have welcomed them with open arms. There is still that stigma that women don't play

football, and we will continue to work through that, but by having the support of so many people, I think it's going in the right direction.

"Among the 33 players, there are 17 players that are new members to the club having no current connection with the Nagambie Football Netball Club so not only is it terrific for the establishment of the women's team but these new recruits will bring more families to the Laker’s football community and continue to grow the club. We are very excited about the future direction of the club and can’t wait for season 2023,” said Rylee.

Players plan to meet fortnightly throughout the year, to get to know each other, and get prepared before preseason starts in November. “Some of our recruits have never actually played football before, so we will take this year to establish confidence across the group, build skills, create new connections and enjoy the lead up,” said Rylee. There is still plenty of ground work that needs to be done to get the team off the ground. “We are encouraging all girls aged 16 and above to make contact with the club if they are interested in playing in 2023. “Together with the 5-member leadership group we will take the remainder of the 2022 football season to secure sponsorship, appoint a coach and create an environment that is inclusive, building confidence among the women’s team,” finished Rylee. The Nagambie Laker’s Women’s Football Team will be part of The Northern Country Women's Football League with the league hoping other towns will be inspired to form their own teams.
