Yulong to See This Yulong Stud owner, Mr. Zhang made his first visit to Australia in 2013. After attending the Melbourne Cup and being inspired by the experience he began investigating opportunities to invest in the Australian racing and breeding industry.

Editorial Following on from our reflections of the challenges and successes of Go Nagambie and the Community Voice in the last edition of The Community Voice, this week I sat down with Go Nagambie President Lee Rowland to discuss the future plans for Go Nagambie.

Firstly, the highlights pulled together of a very challenging last 12 to 18 months for everyone in the last edition of the Community Voice, it's pleasing to see amongst everything that has been happening across the world and in our region we have still been able to achieve so much, but with so much more to do!

And whilst Go Nagambie’s focus is to unashamedly promote Nagambie and the surrounding regions, we don’t do this as one individual but instead as a representative committee of Go Nagambie, so this can on occasions result in questions like who is Go Nagambie, what do they do, your article last edition started to help with some further understanding for people, as will our discussion now and further articles in future editions (I hope!)

What does the future hold for Go Nagambie?

I see the role of Go Nagambie as championing the town and surrounding region as a premier regional centre for liveability, investment, visitation and events and whilst all of these aspects don’t always align perfectly our focus is to deliver a number of key initiatives each year that represent our region best, as well as maintaining the many great things that are already happening in our region.

To that, we would like to maintain and build on our key initiatives such as •

Growing The Community Voice through business, community group and individual involvement to be the best representation of the community it can be

•

Maintaining our strong partnership with Go Seymour for shared value through collaboration and joint initiatives

•

Building our councillor and Strathbogie Shire partnership for community engagement and to support business initiatives such as the Go Dine initiative through COVID

•

Continuing our community based events such as the Australia Day awards, Men’s Health Breakfast and the Nagambie HealthCare Outback Odyssey trivia night amongst others, and

•

Expanding our Go Nagambie membership base across the region (particularly whilst membership is free for the next 12 months) and continuing to provide community and business support through a very cost effective advertising offering in The Community Voice.

Beyond this our future focus areas are on a long list, but some key initiatives to highlight include; •

•

Creation of a published regional events calendar, with a focus on clear awareness of existing events and highlighting opportunities for further events especially in the quieter times of the year, one such example is work being done on a cycling strategy for the region and events such as dirt cycling carnivals Having recently launched our region’s first comprehensive tourism guide, ‘Take Nature’s Road Trip’ we are looking to continue its roll out, making it available as a live online version and continuing to add to the visitor experience with further businesses and new and expanded day planner itineraries

•

Creation of a youth development program to identify support networks and pathways for the regions youth to educate, train and gain long term employment within our region

•

Fresh from the finals of the Victorian Tourism Awards last week, we have already turned our thoughts to next year’s award and how we can go even further with our application and the promotion of Nagambie and the surrounding region as a key tourism destination,

•

Supporting the construction of the boardwalk extension through to the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre through local business contributions

•

hopefully at some time soon returning to in person community sessions to inform and receive community input to Go Nagambie.

What excites you most about the future in Nagambie?

The opportunity to continue supporting our local and new businesses, continuing to grow our tourism proposition and supporting our growing community as best we can. (And hopefully winning next year’s Go Fish first prize!)

What is the region’s biggest challenge?

This really leaves off from my last point that with a growing community, the need to invest in infrastructure, business and new opportunities grows, but this can result in conflicting views across the community as to what should or shouldn’t happen in our community based on individual opinions and circumstances, this is where I think Go Nagambie can play a key role as a representative body of local community

members and business owners to take a holistic view of important community matters and represent these views to the appropriate bodies including our local Councillors and the Strathbogie Shire.

Kirwans Bridge Community Panel gathering knowledge Discussion around the future of Kirwans Bridge are being undertaken by Community Panel members who nominated to share their knowledge with the Strathbogie Council.

Expressions of interest were received from 12 people to join the Community Panel to facilitate community involvement in discussions regarding the bridge’s future.

It was a way of capturing local knowledge, concerns and opportunities so that Council could plan a future for Kirwans Bridge.

In the two meetings that have been held the group nominated Darren Lyons to Chair the meetings and already they have had an informative discussion with a senior manager from Heritage Victoria.

“Interest is high from residents on the east and the west of Kirwans Bridge as well as those who use Kirwans Bridge as a travel or work route to Murchison or Rochester and beyond,” Mr Lyons said.

“We are all interested along with the Council staff in pursuing the options and ideas, but we are looking for a firm direction and time frame to take back to the community of Nagambie. The Bridge remains a vital link for residents, travellers, farmers, tourists and emergency service vehicles''.

The panel will work with Council to decide the historic bridge’s future especially since in March the load limit was lowered from six to three tonnes.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said Council was working hard to improve its community engagement.

“The Kirwans Bridge panel is a great opportunity for Council to make decisions with our community,” Cr Raeburn said.

“Bringing the community into our planning will ensure we’re making better decisions for all Strathbogie Shire residents.”

Avenel gets health and wellbeing boost Avenel’s new tennis club upgrades and exercise equipment will be officially opened by Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum, Strathbogie Shire Council Hughes Creek Ward Councilor Paul Murray, Avenel Tennis Club’s Steve Garner and Avenel Fitness Hub’s Jeff Moran.

The tennis club upgrades were funded by the Federal Government Drought Communities Support Initiative.

Strathbogie Shire Council received $76,500 of Federal funding for the Avenel Tennis Club which went towards the removal of asbestos; recladding the exterior; a new storeroom and refurbishment of clubrooms.

The new Avenel Fitness Hub exercise equipment was funded through a $50,000 Strathbogie Shire Council grant as well as $1000 from Avenel Active and $750 from Jubilee Park Trustees.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said it was pleasing to support health and fitness for Avenel community members.

“It is incredibly important to ensure our communities have access to modern fitness facilities in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Cr Raeburn said.

“We are so pleased to be able to support these great projects which will be well-utilised by Avenel community members in the years to come.”

welcomed the completion of the Avenel Tennis Club’s refurbishment, and said the other Strathbogie Shire Council projects funded via the Drought Communities Program were also set to bring a variety of improvements and benefits to the region.

“These projects are using local contractors and tradesmen, bringing jobs to the community and stimulating the local economy when it is most needed,” Mr Drum said.

“I’m thrilled that the local community and visitors to the region will be able to benefit for decades to come from this funding.”

SPOTLIGHT This week the Community Voice caught up with Cathy Lawrence, owner of La Galerie de Nagambie.

Cathy Lawrence was born in Paris, spent all her youth in Perpignan (French Spanish border) before moving to Brittany and to Tahiti. She was raised with very strong public values where hard work and sport were the foundations.

“Very early I was involved in swimming at national and international levels thanks to my father who was my coach and mentor. My father was a fireman who died on duty in the South of France at the age of 46,” said Cathy.

All her life Cathy has tried to follow his path, serving as a firewoman for five years, being a lifeguard for 18 summers on southern France beaches, volunteering as a first aid instructor. Cathy has also achieved two bachelor of arts degrees in French and English.

“Since 1986, I’ve been dedicated to adult training. I have managed my own training and coaching business in human resources and management in French Polynesia.

“I’ve also been heavily involved in Junior Chamber International (JCI) for 13 years reaching all levels of non governmental organisation and being one of the Seventeen World Vice Presidents,” said Cathy In 2001 Cathy was awarded Outstanding World Vice President. Cathy joined Rotary in 2003 and has held many positions including organising an 18km ocean swim between twin islands, Tahiti and Moorea. In 2015 Cathy was awarded the French Order of Merit Award Cathy has such strong values and continues to look for new challenges setting new goals. With a dream to one day restore an old house Cathy and her husband Hugh Lawrence settled in Nagambie.

“Hugh was living in Shepparton, I was living in Tahiti and we have always wanted to find an old house to restore and this house had to be by the water (I love and need water to live by). Nagambie ticked all the boxes, and straight away we had a great feeling that Nagambie would be called home. In July 2000 we bought our home prior to the auction. Twenty years have already gone,” said Cathy.

This home would become La Galerie de Nagambie and was opened in October 2013, the day the Black Caviar Statue was revealed, after Hugh completed the renovations.

“Hugh’s mum, Wilma Lawrence, has been into antiques and painting for decades. Hugh and I thought that after the bypass (Nagambie), we should use our beautiful colonial building to bring a new centre of interest for Nagambie. Our home could be an ideal place to display and sell some of Wilma’s unique pieces. At the same time, I wanted to bring my French and Tahitian touch, displaying items I love: the stunning Tahitian black pearls, beautiful lamps, teapots, bronze statues, champagne buckets, combining antiques

collectables and special gifts. And the adventure began,” said Cathy.

Cathy’s focus has always been on quality. Sourcing fine quality products, delivering quality of the service including layby, gift wrap, local delivery and fair prices.

“I feel so lucky to sell lovely items in warm and welcoming premises. Running the Galerie has given me nearly 8 years of opportunities to meet so many lovely local and out of town people. Many have become regular customers, some have become friends. I just love the contact with customers, advising, helping them find and choose the right gift, the right piece of jewelry, the right object which will find a new loving home. I am so pleased and grateful to have had such great support especially in these hard Covid times,” said Cathy.

With Lockdown 5 upon us and border restrictions tightening both locally and internationally Cathy is unable to travel to Tahiti but she has enjoyed her time in Nagambie.

“When I arrived back home (from Tahiti) in November 2020 after nearly 9 months away due to COVID Hugh and I knew I would be in Nagambie for numerous months and surely all of 2021. It has been fantastic to be together, somehow rather complicated for my business in Tahiti. Hard to have many projects in such uncertain times which lead us to challenge and resilience, and a new priority. Turning 60 in July, it is time for me to look back but also to look for a new stage of life,” said Cathy.

“After 25 years together and 19 years of marriage, I will finally intend to apply for Australian citizenship at the end of the year, and start focusing more on my “Galerie” business than on my consulting and training business in Tahiti. I am not ready at this stage to stop working for my Tahitian clients and “retire” full time in Nagambie.....but I know it will come gradually... and surely<” said Cathy.

Life in Nagambie, how does that compare to other countries you have lived in? “ I lived in France (Paris, Perpignan, Nantes) where I was born and bred, then I started my professional life moving to Cheshire in Great Britain for two years, then back to Nantes (France) managing two training institutes for the Chamber of Commerce, and then I lived in Tahiti for nearly 30 years.

Whether for work, for associative commitments, Councillor of Exterior Trade for France, I have travelled in many countries: worked in Belgium EEC Brussels, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Pacific islands, Americas.

“Most of my professional career has been in Tahiti where I have developed my circle of friends and my social network being involved in many associations. Tahiti is a fantastic place to live and work even though I have never had much

time for rest (working six and half days a week). In Tahiti, I have my business professional hat, I am the one who is always on the move. For twenty years, I have travelled every 5 to 6 weeks between Tahiti and Nagambie, and changing rhythm of life has always enabled me to resource and regenerate myself when in Nagambie.

“My life in Nagambie is so much more peaceful, and less hectic than my life in Tahiti. Maybe sometimes a bit too slow for me. Since November 2020, I have had to readjust my way of running my Tahiti business using Zoom and Skype, downsizing it to coaching and recruiting activities. Besides running my Galerie 7 days a week and helping Hugh in his real estate business, I find time to play a fair bit on the golf course, be in the garden and appreciate being somehow “incognito”.

“It is hard to compare my two lives which have complimented me so well for 20 years. Now, I feel it is time to slow down, to take the time and to make the time, and above all enjoy my life with Hugh and the family. Covid has surely made me reconsider priorities. Home is where your heart is: I feel I have and will always have two homes Nagambie (low lagoon in arboriginal language) and Tahiti with its wonderful pristine lagoons. I am so lucky, I have had the best of both worlds,” said Cathy.

Cathy calls Nagambie home, and has witnessed the town transform from a highway town to a tourist attraction.

“Nagambie has grown so much in the last twenty years.

The small rural town has gone. Nagambie has become a stunning touristic town which still has so much to offer, and so much potential: a stunning lake, great vineyards, horse studs, lovely restaurants and classy shops. Nagambie is now the place to visit, the place to be, the place to live.

“The main street could still be enhanced, that’s where the tourists go. More businesses, more services, it would be nice to remove the overhead electricity wires, replace the lamp poles with an attractive alternative, more flowers, and use the water tower as a touristic feature.

“Having my Galerie open 7 days a week humbly contributes in its way to the dynamism and the image of a touristic welcoming town. It is a commitment for it may be the price to pay to really have a touristic town.

“Nagambie is getting closer and closer to Melbourne. We cannot prevent its development, we just have to accompany it, control and manage it.

I just hope Nagambie will keep its soul; the community is just great, diversified and so welcoming, “ finished Cathy.

Drop-in sessions on proposed Nagambie subdivision We’re hosting a series of drop-in days to ensure the Nagambie and surrounding communities can learn about a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application for a 250-lot housing development in Nagambie.

Update on the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel Discussion around the future of Kirwans Bridge is progressing through a Community Panel who nominated to share their knowledge with Council.

In the two meetings that have been held the group nominated Darren Lyons to Chair the meetings and have had an informative discussion with a Heritage Victoria representative.

The group will work with Council to decide the historic bridge’s future. We will continue to keep you updated through this column.

The proposed amendment is on public exhibition until Friday, August 13, 2021.

The amendment is a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application made under section 96A of the Planning and Environment Act 1987. It seeks to rezone 41.7ha of land at 401 High Street and 19 Lobbs Lane from Farming Zone to General Residential Zone.

The proposed planning application then seeks to establish a 250-lot housing development.

Cash support for Victorian businesses during lockdown The Victorian Government will provide new cash grants for businesses affected by the short lockdown necessary to get ahead of the Delta strain, so they can have a strong recovery on the other side of the public health restrictions.

Automatic payments will be made to eligible businesses and sole traders across the state to minimise delays and swiftly get money into the pockets of businesses who need it most.

“No one wanted to be here, but Victorians know we must take decisive action to drive this virus down – so we’re in this situation for days, not months.

“People start needing support from day one –

hour one – of a lockdown. We know this is tough on Victorian businesses and we’re standing with them, just as we’ve done from the very start of the pandemic,” said Premier Daniel Andrews.

Up to 90,000 businesses that have and will receive payments through the Licensed Hospitality Venue Fund and Business Costs Assistance Program relating to the May-June lockdown will receive the Victorian Government’s new support payments of $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.

Payments are due to commence over the course of next week – with total funding of $201.8 million.

Eligible businesses will include restaurants, cafes bars, event suppliers, tourism and accommodation providers and non- essential retailers.

The Victorian Government has also reached agreement with the Commonwealth Government

to fund income support payments from day one of the lockdown.

Workers affected by the public health restrictions are now eligible for the same payments afforded by the Commonwealth to New South Wales workers: Payments of $600 will be made to Victorians that lose 20 hours or more of work during the period of the lockdown Payments of $375 will be made to individuals that lose between 8-20 hours of work during the period of the lockdown There is no liquid assets test applied to receive these payments The Federal Government will fund payments for those Victorians who work or live in a COVID-19 Hotspot declared by the Commonwealth – that includes Greater Melbourne, Moorabool Shire, the City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliffe and the Surf Coast Shire.

The Victorian Government will fund payments for Victorians who live outside of these areas but are still subject to the lockdown.

All applications can be made through the Services Australia at www.servicesaustralia.gov.au.

The Victorian Government’s direct economic support for businesses has topped $6 billion over the course of the pandemic, including more than

$500 million through the last restrictions period with $461.2 million allocated for the Business Costs Assistance Program and Licensed Hospitality Venue Fund.

Some 90 per cent of those program allocations have been delivered to date – $413 million in grants to more than 86,000 small and medium-sized businesses and sole traders.

The Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions is working with 22,000 applicants to the Business Costs Assistance Program to finalise those applications where information has been missing or further detail has been requested to confirm eligibility.

It is expected thousands of these applicants will be successful and paid by the end of next week.

The May/June support package also included the $20 million Victorian Events Support Package, $16 million for 80,000 regional travel vouchers and $4.4 million for the Alpine Support Program providing businesses in the alpine resorts with grants of up to $15,000.

Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Martin Pakula said, “Local businesses across Victoria are the backbone of our economy. This critical support will make sure business owners can weather this new challenge and recover strongly.”

Drop-in to learn more about a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application for Nagambie subdivision Strathbogie Shire Council is hosting a series of drop-in days to ensure the Nagambie and surrounding communities can learn about a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application for a 250-lot housing development in Nagambie.

The proposed amendment is now on public exhibition.

The amendment has been made at the request of CRC Constructions Pty Ltd and applies to land on the west side of High St, Nagambie and adjoining Lake Nagambie on its western boundary.

The amendment is a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application made under section 96A of the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

This means it seeks to rezone 41.7ha of land at 401 High St and 19 Lobbs Lane from Farming Zone to General Residential Zone. The proposed planning application then seeks to establish a 250-lot housing development.

The site is within a precinct which forms the northern gateway entrance to Nagambie.

This amendment also seeks to apply updated flood modelling to accurately represent the flood risks and flows to the subject site.

What this means is, the amendment is seeking to amend the use this updated data to remove a floodway overlay at the southern end of the land to allow for residential development.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn, said Council understood there would be interest in this combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application.

I thought I’d put forward an offering in Barbs absence, and have the hearty approval of the Minister of Home Affairs (and everything else).

Now I’m not a strict recipe follower, however it has been my downfall in the past, but you can be a little adventurous here, depending on what’s in the pantry.

This recipe has been trialled three or four times now and gets the ‘thumbs up'. Perfect for our current ‘cold snap’. Let us know what you think.

Serves up to 6, Prep 15 mins-ish, Cook 5-6 hours Cooker cap. 3.5 lit min

Method 1. Put the sauces and garlic into slower cooker, mix well, put on ‘high’ temp.

2. Put flour in a bowl, season with S & P, coat meat in flour.

3. Heat oil in fry pan, medium to high heat, brown meat.

4. Add meat/onion/tomatoes to slow cooker, mix well.

(I wash out tin and add) 5. Cover with lid and cook for minimum 4-5 hours.

Stir every hour or so and if too dry or thick, add a little boiling water and mix through.

I also added a few veggies, thick cut carrots, parsnip, potatoes and frozen beans about halfway through.

YUM, YUM…ENJOY.

Cr Reg Dickinson Update Greetings to all readers of The Community Voice, our free fortnightly paper and one in which I will be contributing to regularly, to keep you up to speed with what is happening on Council and what could be happening in the future.

I have been on Council now for seven months and believe me there is never a dull moment. Lots of work and lots of progress. As a group, council have been meeting every Tuesday, usually in Euroa but sometimes in Nagambie. Outside that time, I seem to spend a lot of time in other community meetings or attending to requests from ratepayers.

Our induction period was long and laborious, however under current legislation it was a requirement and thankfully now it is behind me and I can devote more time to council matters and Lake Nagambie Ward. There is so much happening here and there are so many active groups that do so much for our community, and usually as a volunteer. I would like to single out “Go Nagambie” and the Community House. Both groups contribute continually for the betterment and future of all of us and represent many other groups and people.

From now on I will be making myself available to meet with community members on a regular basis.

You can catch up with me between 10.00am and noon each Thursday at the Rowing Club/Valley.

Trevor Forbes (Manager) has kindly allowed me to use these premises on an ongoing basis and it is certainly central and comfortable. If for some reason I am not there you can be assured that something has cropped up and it will be of extreme importance.

The Skate Park is nearly completed! I called there a few days ago and was assured, weather permitting, it would be done and dusted in a few weeks. Having said that, the rains have descended upon us in recent days and I am guessing that will put things back a little. It will be a great asset for our town, and our youth (or maybe even the not so young).

It was fantastic to read the update of the Nagambie Football and Netball Club. Well done to Barry Cryer who put a lot of work into the first issue, and I for one look forward to reading future updates.

Membership of Go Nagambie is for all residents, not just business people which I have been assured is a common misconception. Some of this confusion may have arisen as the Shire has provided a funding package to Go Nagambie to provide amongst other measures free membership for Registered business that predominantly operate within the Shire as we recover from the impacts of repeated lockdowns. The funding will also assist in business promotion mentoring support, and attracting visitors to the area. So whilst membership is not free for residents, the cost is very modest and the group is looking to welcome more members. So if you have a few ideas you want to share then I am encouraging you to get in touch with them or maybe just become a member and enjoy the camaraderie.

Council has formed a working group with members of the Kirwans Bridge community, which is headed up by a community chair Darren Lyon.

Their purpose is to explore all the possibilities that may be available, to save, improve or replace this historic icon, Victoria’s longest wooden bridge which is heritage listed. They are currently meeting fortnightly at the Regatta Centre.

Strathbogie Shire Council commemorated NAIDOC Week Strathbogie Shire Council commemorated NAIDOC Week with a flag raising ceremony of the Taungurung sovereign flag which was kindly gifted to the Council.

The event was held at Council’s offices in Euroa and included a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country conducted by Uncle Shane Monk from the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.

Celebrations were followed by a morning tea and a free screening for 'My Name is Gulpilil' at the Euroa Community Cinema.

NAIDOC Week is held from July 4 to 11 this year with the theme Heal Country and commemorating the week is important to Strathbogie Shire Council.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said the flag raising ceremony was a simple gesture Council could take to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage.

“The flag is the first sovereign flag design representing the region and the Taungurung people in Victoria,” Cr Raeburn said.

“It is important for Council to take this

opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

The celebration comes at a time Strathbogie Shire Council is developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Taungurung people.

“Our aim is to protect our region’s important cultural heritage,” Cr Raeburn said.

“Developing a MoU is essential to strengthening the relationship with our First Nations peoples and the Traditional Owners of Taungurung Country.

“An MoU will govern the interactions between Council and the Taungurung Land and Waters Council and build practical and mutually respectful and beneficial connections.”

Council is currently seeking the community’s input into the principles of the MoU as well as a new Acknowledgement to Country for Council to use at all official meetings and events and in Council documents.

THE LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP TOUR POSTPONED A huge day of activities was planned for the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour’s visit to Nagambie on July 24.

The 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy visits various destinations in an effort to unite communities by engaging councils, schools, hospitals, aged-care homes and racing groups in events to raise funds for local causes.

Go Nagambie was set to host The Cup Tour this coming weekend and showcase the region during the visit but with the escalating COVID 19 situation in Victoria it has been postponed.

“This was to be the 5th time we have welcomed the Cup Tour to Nagambie and with current restrictions in place we will have to wait a little longer,” said executive officer Sissy Hoskin.

The rescheduled date for the tour will be released soon. The cup tour this year will visit Seymour's Station, where it will be on display and available for photo opportunities.

Go Seymour and the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre were putting a heritage train back on the tracks to take the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup from Seymour to Nagambie.

“We are disappointed that we won’t be welcoming the Cup Tour this weekend but we will enjoy it just the same when it eventuates, “A heritage train ride, a visit to Fowles Wines in Avenel and an evening with racing identities at Zephyrs Restaurant in Nagambie will be rescheduled to the new date, we just need to be patient,” said Ms. Hoskin.

RDA Seymour Cancellation of Lessons due to Covid The RDA Seymour Committee of Management has made the regretful decision to suspend individual lessons for after school and Saturdays until we can find volunteers to commit to a session to allow them to run in a safe manner.

This is primarily due to the lack of experienced volunteers to assist with leading horses and other roles at these lessons. Due to Covid we had to restructure session times to after school and Saturday mornings to be able to provide our much needed program and these new times have seen us with a lack of volunteers.

Thursday morning classes will continue with 2 participants Rio and Judy. If at any time there are not enough volunteers to help run lessons they will be cancelled.

We shall address this matter at a meeting in the near future and let you know once we can resume sessions.

Volunteer Drive. We recently sent out an email with a one page flyer advertising for new volunteers. To help us recruit more volunteers to enable us to resume lessons, it would be wonderful if everyone could print off 5-6 flyers and ask any shop you go into over the next week if they would kindly put it in their window. Also feel free to forward it to any businesses you think might be a good source of volunteers. Horse studs, trainers, pony clubs, adult riders, banks, wineries, stock feed, rural supply shops etc. In any surrounding towns…

Queen's community condolence book appreciated by her majesty In April, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh passed away and the news reverberated around the world. Sympathy for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II emanated from countries far and wide, people in her United Kingdom and from nations in the Commonwealth of which she is the head.

Now you may not be a monarchist, royalist or a republican. But I have been a devoted servant to Her Majesty since I was a small girl when I saw the new Queen and Prince Philip ride down St Kilda Road, in 1954 on her first Royal Tour of Australia.

I have been to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle and have admired the Royal Family for my whole life.

In April, a day or so after the Prince’s death, I wondered what we could do to show Her Majesty our feelings for her at this sad time.

So I compiled a Queen’s Condolence Book on behalf of the Nagambie community and felt it

would be good if I could collect signatures or various group signatories in it. So for four weeks I walked down around collecting signatures various groups, schools, churches, businesses and individuals and collected around 1200 signatures.

I also included over 80 photographs of various groups and scenes and buildings of Nagambie in the book. I sent the book over to Buckingham Palace in mid May. On Tuesday, 13 July, I received two letters from Her Majesty’s Lady in Waiting Susan Hussey and two thankyou cards with His Royal Highness, Prince Philips’ photo on them. The letters were dated 23 June 2021 and came from Windsor Castle. I got very emotional reading them.

One letter was a personal one to me with thanks for the message I sent with the Condolence Book that I organised on behalf of the Community of Nagambie.

The Queen wishes me to write and thank you very much for your splendid book of condolence containing your photographs and kind messages of sympathy on the death of Her Majesty’s beloved husband, The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen has been deeply touched by the messages she has received from all around the world and is most grateful for your thoughtful words.

Victorian Top Tourism Awards The winners of Victoria’s inaugural Top Tourism Town Awards have been revealed, with Ballarat and Port Fairy taking top honours for 2021.

Ballarat was named Victoria’s Top Tourism Town (population over 5,000), while Port Fairy took out the top spot to win Top Small Tourism Town Award (population under 5000).

Lakes Entrance took the Silver Award for Top Tourism Town, followed closely by Bendigowhich was awarded Bronze. For the Top Small Tourism Town category, Timboon was awarded Silver and Apollo Bay achieved Bronze recognition.

The Top Tourism Town Awards are a new initiative under the Victorian and Australian Tourism Awards process. Hosted by VTIC, the awards recognise and celebrate towns that excel in providing an outstanding visitor experience.

After the year that was, and the challenges that continue to present, Go Nagambie were thrilled to showcase why Nagambie is a top tourism town.

“We have a really passionate tourism industry, it has been a wonderful experience and we know there still is work to be done to take out this award.

The feedback we received from the submission was positive and the acknowledgement of being a finalist has us thinking about next year’s submission in the Top Town Tourism Awards,” said Go Nagambie’s Sissy Hoskin.

“We have such a strong commitment to tourism and to delivering outstanding visitor experiences, whether it be at one of our superb wineries, in our small communities or on our waterways. In a world that is constantly changing there is no better time to stay local, spend local and help our local tourism industry bounce back by supporting each other,” finished Ms Hoskin.

VTIC was pleased to see 30 destinations nominated for this prestigious position, with 22 outstanding finalists from across the state ultimately competing for the top awards.

The two Victorian Gold Winners will go on to compete for the title of Australia’s Top Tourism Town, which will be announced at Parliament House in Canberra on the 2nd of September.

Nagambie and District Historical Society Inc Like many other clubs and societies, lockdown drastically reduced income for Nagambie and District Historical Society Inc., as markets and the museum were closed. However all has not been doom and gloom and there is a great feeling of optimism at the Society.

Perhaps the main reason for this is that the work on the historic power house is almost complete, with new concrete floors making for some wonderful storage space. An excellent turnup of volunteers just prior to the concrete pour enabled the area to be readied in no time.

Due to lack of space, The museum has looked and felt a bit cramped for a few years.

Over the next few months the committee will be reorganising some of the interior spaces to create better workrooms and areas for research.

Once this is achieved it is hoped to involve members in some projects.

A new sign, visible from the road, has been placed on the gate detailing opening hours and contact details.

Last week members attended a pleasant Sunday afternoon, to meet and greet others, have a look at the new bush kitchen display and of course the recent work.

Meanwhile, exciting plans for the future continue. The committee is trying to hold a variety of functions which cater to different groups in the community as well as taking a different slant on history. Of course the basic fundraisers such as produce making and raffles will need to continue.

The Society will run a Father’s Day raffle at IGA, over three days in September. Don’t miss out on a chance to win a great prize, donated

by Bunnings Shepparton. For the children and young at heart, of course, Halloween night at the museum will be great scary fun.

Two exciting events are planned in November, an Oaks Day function on the 4th and a Collectables and Ephemera show and tell, on the 14th. Both of these will be ‘first in best dressed’ events. Further details will follow.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Museum, 344 High St, Nagambie, on Wednesday August 18, 2021 at 7pm.

Avenel Walk Friday 9th July was the perfect sunny day to join dozens of people for the free Family Walk around Avenel in the footsteps of Ned Kelly. This fully booked out tour was a joint project between Nagambie Lakes Community House, Strathbogie Shire Council, CASI and Avenel Active.

David Willis (historian and author) was our knowledgeable tour guide and he, along with Jen Arnold, mapped out the route we followed which commenced at the historical Hughes Creek bridge and ended at the Avenel cemetery. We were treated to a viewing of the old Shelton hotel which is part

of the Ned Kelly story.

The happy walkers concluded the morning with a free light lunch at Jubilee Park.

Nagambie Mechanics Institute Nagambie Mechanics Institute committee are happy to announce our first fundraiser event for 2021 Our lovely little op shop is hosting its first fashion extravaganza on Friday 24th of September from 7.30pm in the ballroom. Tickets can be purchased online at trybooking.

The funds from this event will go towards more much needed renovations and upgrades for our beautiful old building. The previous committees have done a Stirling job and now it is our turn.

Our toilets are in need of an upgrade as are all the exterior doors, we desperately need a commercial kitchen that chefs and caterers would be happy to use, our window frames at the front of the building are rotting and in desperate need of work as well, so as you can see there are many reasons for us to fundraise and we rely on the community’s support, as always.

We think the Mechanics building is a real asset to our town therefore we need to keep up with the maintenance and appearances.

Nagambie Senior Citizens Activities have resumed at the Clubrooms, and we have welcomed back many of the regular user groups, the ever popular Line Dancers, Bingo, our Tai Chi and Get Moving Group, Movies, Craft, Cards, Chess and Carpet Bowls.

Come along and try any of our enjoyable activities.

We will be changing our time for Carpet Bowls to Tuesday at 10.30 am to allow other members to come along that had a clash with other events, we are hoping it may suit more members and we encourage you to give it a go, a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.

We celebrated a Christmas in July last Monday, with great food supplied by JBL Catering and entertainment by Noel Pearson along with all the extras that the Social Committee spoiled us with, it was a very enjoyable day.

We will be opening bookings for our Birthday Celebration in October soon, so don’t miss a place for that.

The Annual General Meeting of the Nagambie Cricket Club is to be held at the Recreation Reserve on Tuesday July 27 at 6.30pm. All current and prospective players and parents of juniors are invited to attend, there are plenty of positions to go around.

At present the Shepparton Cricket Association is planning to revert to the normal season of a combination of one and two day matches. Depending on playing numbers three senior teams, four junior teams and the Junior Blasters program will be in action again this season.

Youth take part in Heywire workshop Strathbogie Shire youth were given the opportunity to participate in creative writing workshops, conducted by the ABC’s Heywire.

Up to 40 winners from all over regional Australia are selected for the competition each year.

The ABC has run the annual regional youth project in partnership with the Australian Government since 1998.

“I enjoyed telling other participants how I took up learning to play bass guitar during lockdown in July, 2020 and how I used that time to really improve my music,” he said.

Winners will also have the opportunity to come together to discuss how life could be improved for young people in their communities.

Elliot’s father Brendan Paterson, who is a teacher, said the Heywire presenter had great teaching techniques to draw out the participants’ stories.

Heywire is open to people aged 16-22 living in regional or rural Australia, encouraging young people to tell stories about their lives outside the major cities through text, photo, video or audio formats.

Strathbogie youth were treated to a hands-on writing workshop with Heywire producer Katie McAllister recently where they began formulating stories to submit to this year’s competition.

They work with ABC producers to see their stories featured across ABC platforms including

young people to tell their experiences of living in a rural setting.

“Heywire is all about championing the perspectives of young people,” Ms McAllister said.

“We know we have an aging demographic, so it is incredibly important to highlight the unique experiences of young people in the Strathbogie Shire,” Cr Raeburn said.

“There were some incredible stories already coming out of the workshop with some of the young people of Strathbogie, I can’t wait to read their entries!”

“There are so many fantastic young people doing great things here and we encourage them to share their stories through the Heywire competition.”

Euroa’s Elliot Paterson, 17, took park in the workshop and said it was interesting to listen to other people write and share their stories.

“It was a great way to encourage young people in rural areas to share their stories, which is really important in an age when many of the commercial media networks are decreasing their coverage of local news.”

Entries to this year’s Heywire competition are currently open and close on September 16.

Tom tackles the Simpson to beat the beast

On the 10th of July 2021 John Beresford from Nagambie joined an 80 year old car enthusiast, Tom Barr Smith and six friends on a journey to cross the Simpson Desert in a 2003 C4S Porsche. Yes, a mad cap idea but not bad for an 80-year-old car enthusiast!

The team of seven are hoping to raise $100,000 and more importantly raise awareness for research to Fight Motor Neurone Disease.

Almost twenty years ago the Porsche was considered a “SuperCar” and designed for highways but not unmade outback roads! Porsche Australia funded the preparation of a similar car and were able to give it much more ground clearance by engineering input from the parent company in Germany. The team will not have that technical assistance, money or expertise behind them.

The group headed off from Flinders at the crack of dawn on 10th July to head for an overnight stop at Burra and then to Marree and the Oodnadatta track via William Creek and a night under the stars at Algebuckina Bridge. This enormous wrought Iron Bridge built in 1867 is the only one on the Ghan Railway never to be breached by years of floods. The last pit stop at Dalhousie Springs and onto the Simpson Desert. What an adventure!

Out of the desert and to Birdsville. From there they head through various private properties to Quinyambie, Mulyungarie and on to Cockburn across the Barrier highway between Broken Hill and Adelaide and on to Mutooroo Station and back to Burra.

The team were determined not to be bound by a tight schedule for several reasons and they have no idea just how the Porsche without modifications would cope with the sand dunes.

On a determined mission to complete the exciting journey and raise funds. The context of this venture is sad. At almost the same time both Neale Danaher, and Tom’s wife Jenny, were diagnosed with MND. What the legendary Neale has achieved in the intervening time is amazing to all Australians.

Jenny is not here partly because she was amongst the 10% of MND sufferers who tragically have the “familial” gene about which little was known when her mother and her aunt died of it many years ago.

All this means that Jenny’s children have a 50% chance of getting it as well. The family have been staunch supporters of all Fight MND efforts over the years and are no less so now.

This wonderful world will be an even better place, should our collective dollars and scientists bring about a positive result.

Day 4 - Beltana Station - A swag's night stop, a big fire, lots of laughs and a big lump of meat to BBQ around the the old railway dam built to supply water for trains. Rough roads testing the Porsche but everything is holding together and Tom and the team are in good spirits!

DAY 1 - Crossing the Murray on the way to Burra

DAY 7 - Oh gosh, only 30 seconds on the satellite phone from the Simpson today before it cut out! In that 30 seconds I learnt that the roof rack on the Porsche had broken and they had to load up onto the 4WD......So that's all I've got...and am waiting anxiously for further news. The flight with mates on board to meet them at Birdsville has been cancelled due to the Victorian lock down, so the team might have a few more beers to down when the team gets there.

Oh No...first puncture at William Creek but not quite sure why Tom is on his knees with all the young fellas looking on?!

Day 5 - Meeting the girls at the Pink Roadhouse -Oodnadatta! Getting close to the serious sandy stuff!

Day 9 - They've arrived in Birdsville with the old Porsche a little worse for wear after a gruelling Simpson. Photos will be coming in slowly as the team are all having a hot shower and dinner followed by a night in a real bed. What is it about a group of young fellas all laughing at the old boy changing a tyre. Porsche will be going to 'hospital' as the undercarriage is being held together with cable tyres after it nearly lost all its coolant.

DAY 2 - Stocking up for the next leg and a drive to the Parachilna pub for dinner

Day 3 - Pit stop in the Flinders Ranges on the way to Blinman.

DAY 6 - No photos today as we only have access via satellite phone. Tom just called and all is well apart from the Porsche getting bogged a couple of times on wet slippery tracks. Luckily the trusty 4WD ute pulled him out. They are now in the dunes of the Simpson and driving is tough. Due to Victorian Covid lockdown he is a little anxious about meeting his friends who were flying up to Birdsville to meet them and the trip is sadly cancelled. More news as soon as I get it!

Nagambie Golf Women's Golf Results, Wednesday 7th July There was a great turn up of 14 players.

A Grade winner and winner of the Monthly Medal was Irene Keogh with 76 net.

B and C Grade winner was Bev Brown with 87 net.

The 9 hole winner was Jo Goodacre with 35 net.

18 hole balls went to Irene 76, Moz Fowler 79 and Annette Mills with 82 net.

9 hole balls went to Jo 35, Irene 37 and Sally Bazeley 40.

Sally also managed a very good second shot on the 3rd for N/P. Chicken Run Results 8th July There were 19 players for a Stroke round.

Nagambie Mens Golf It was tough going for another week with a thick fog and the course playing long for a Par event at the Nagambie golf club with only two players from a field of 26 beating handicap.

Ben Cassar was the day's winner with +5 narrowly missing out on the best Par score of the year a +6 which was already his, obvious par agrees with Ben's aggressive style of play hit it hard or not at all. Chris Roberts came in runner up with a solid performance and the only other score better than handicap with a +3, third went to Shaun Spicer finishing on -1.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Doug Neville firing an arrow onto the difficult to reach 3rd, with Chris Roberts the only other to hit a green on the par 3's going close to an ace on the 13th. Next golf will be a stableford event, 2nd round of the social club trophy with S. Bryant on office duty and J. Lodding in the bar.

Ed & Lyn arrived in Nagambie from Culcairn, NSW in September 2012. Lyn remembers this vividly as the Swans won the AFL Grand Final that year. (She was reminded they havent won since) Lets hope they get to enjoy another big win soon.

Both Ed & Lyn Dunn have been involved with a number of clubs within the town, including the Angling Club (Lyn - Secretary, Ed Treasurer) and T.O.W.N (Lyn - Secretary, Ed - Treasurer) but no more so than the Bowls Club.

Both Ed & Lyn were avid bowlers and played in both Midweek & Saturday pennant teams.

Both enjoyed the success of Grand Final flags in the midweek competition and runners up in the Saturday competition. Very few players can boast these achievements!

Apart from their playing ability, Ed represented Nagambie each week in the Over 60's competition, bar assistant, had a stint as Secretary, league delegate, committee member and jack of all trades.

Lyn on the other hand (known as bucket) was there to help with every function the club held, whether it be selling raffle/spinning wheel tickets, making slices, serving food and making things for the trade table. Both always put their hand up to help and will be sorely missed by the club.

WEEKEND WRAP LAKERS V RUSHY (JULY 10)

Round 13 action saw us set the compass to the north-west and head to Ironbark Stadium to face the Rushy Tigers on their home deck on a glorious winter’s day.

Mixed results to start the day with both our junior teams facing up against higher placed opponents on their home courts.

Rushworth Under 15’s got off to the flying start taking a 5 goal lead in the first quarter and extending to an 11 goal advantage at the main break, which also happened to be the final margin. Having only the bare 7 players this week made coach Sasha’s job more difficult in trying to reduce the margin, but to our girls credit, they never gave up- proving again they can certainly match it. Outscoring the home side in the final quarter 8-6 was a positive to take away from the loss.

Final score- Nag 24 def by Rush 35.

Incentive- Katie Perry The Under 17’s game was a very close & entertaining match to watch from start to finish.

Credit to our girls coming away with a 5 goal win to make it back to back wins. Thank you to Katie Perry doubling up to play a very important role in defence with 2 of our regular players out this week. Coach Katie is really impressed with the girls commitment to training, working on those individual aspects of each players game to allow for every player to contribute to this great team win. Well done girls! It’s wonderful to see the team improvement and the belief to win growing each week.

Final score- Nag 46 def Rush 41.

Incentive- Ashleigh Fraser Wins for all our senior grades was certainly our expectations this week. C grade started this run with a very impressive 72 goal win. Several players missing from Coach Rylee’s regular list proving no concern, especially when we are lucky to have number of talented under 17’s to join our senior teams. Great work C gradeyou are building good momentum as we edge closer to the end of the home & away season.

Final score- Nag 78 def Rush 6.

Incentive Annalise Rymes B grade were able to secure another win despite the extremely difficult juggling act that is player availability that coach Tracy has been facing week in week out. Credit to the Rushy girls being able to have an even 2nd & 3rd quarter to keep the scoreboard pressure on.

However, fitness proved a huge factor in our girls being able to run out a 19-7 last quarter to take the points comfortably in the end.

Congratulations to Charlotte Mason from our 17’s playing her first senior B grade game this week & having an important role at WA in this win.

Final score- Nag 52 def Rush 36.

Incentive- Ebony Peters A grade went into this game wanting to lift intensity and sustain it for the duration of the match. Coach Katie was happy with the sides ability to display exactly that this week. A 22-7 first quarter set up the win nicely and the 19-3 third quarter was extremely pleasing. Our player depth throughout our grades allows good rotation & we thank Ebony & Maddison for the important part they played in today’s impressive win. There is a great feel amongst our playing group & this ability to work together & enjoy the game is a real highlight.

Final score- Nag 69 def Rush 26.

Incentive- Katie Sullivan Over at the footy, in the u18’s, Coach Sniff was unavailable and handed the reigns over to Nathan Fothergill to lead to boys for the day. The change certainly didn’t seem to affect the boys as they started well, jumping out to a 31 point quarter time lead. From here the lads never looked back, winning every quarter comfortably to run out 77 point winners. The O’Brien goal scoring show (more on this later) rolled on with Darby grabbing 5 and Flynn 1, Captain Nick helped himself to 5 also, whilst Campbell Baker kicked 3, Morgan Donovan 2 & Luke Cornfoot and Mitch Coll 1 apiece. Better players were Campbell Baker, Mitch Coll, Morgan Donovan, Luke Cornfoot and Will Burn.

The reserves made it 4 in a row with a commanding 155-0 victory which gave a nice

percentage boost and put the boys firmly in the mix for September action. Set up on the back of an accurate & scintillating 8 goal first term, it was a case of 1 way traffic for Bo and the boys. Much more difficult games on the immediate horizon but the boys should have plenty of confidence on the back of recent performances. Matty Martin was welcomed back with a tidy 11 goals with best supporting actor awards going to Manga (4 goals) & Jase Shiels (3 goals). Even after giving himself a couple of high fives, Matty was still awarded best on ground and was joined in the best by Nick Smidt, Jack Sampson, Manga, Crackers Shepherd and Jase Shiels.

In the seniors, it was another pleasing 4-quarter effort which saw another 4 points jump in the bank and a few percentage points also, thanks to the lopsided 238-8 scoreboard. Even more pleasing was the senior debut of young Will O’Brien who just rolled in and helped himself to 7 majors. What a fantastic effort from the young guy and another glimpse into the future at Lakerland. Also fantastic to see was the return of the evergreen Mike Shiels, who finally make it onto the ground after a few niggling setbacks leading up to this. The veteran looked like he hasn’t missed a beat and will certainly be better for the run. Along with Will’s 7, Matty Waterson chimed in with 6 goals whilst Blake Fothergill and Jacko Hutton snared a handful each, the latter proving goal kicking ain’t all that hard and ensured not only he will play forward for the remainder of the year, but that Anthony Haysom will need to play well in the reserves this week to earn his spot back.

HUTTON HITS 300 GAMES FOR THE MIGHTY LAKERS

Is there much this guy hasn’t done?

The pair were recently given a farewell night at the Nagambie Bowls Club with members from all 3 clubs attending.

4 time premiership player, Vice Captain, Vice President, Best Clubman 2019, kicked 30 goals in a game of thirds back in the day, then got sent to full back by coach Linc after Sam

Laporta took him to the cleaners in 2009 and hasn’t looked back since with his well known ear massages a feature. Tireless work with renovations of the club rooms. Jacko is arguably in the best 3 or 4 defenders in the KDL outside of Sniff & Barn. Lets not forget about the good old days when Jacko would head to the pub for beers with a box of shapes so he could save on buying dinner.

We all hope their next chapter of their life is fruitful and allows them to spend many hours with their family whilst enjoying good health.

Congratulations on your 300 games Jacko, well deserved and we as a club are so thankful for all your hard work and dedication to the club.
