NAGAMBIE PRIMARY BIG BUILD TO START
After eighteen months of planning, Nagambie Primary School is set to receive a makeover, with major building works about to begin.
To re-cap, in late 2020, Nagambie Primary School Principal received a phone call from Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern and current Attorney General.
“I received a call from Jaclyn Symes MP that we were allocated $2,900,000 of capital works funding in the Victorian budget to ‘upgrade and modernise’ our school. From there, the Victorian School Building Authority take responsibility for the money and managing the project, including appointing an architect to coordinate everything.
“After much consultation in 2020 with our school and wider community, we set out our vision and priorities. Central to this was keeping the ‘green heart’ open space of our school that has play, physical activity, community, learning and wellbeing at its core.
“Not everything we hoped for fitted into the final budget (does it ever), with the well-publicised rising cost of building works rearing its unfortunate head. However, we have been able to retain the two main priorities.
The two priorities included a new large learning space and a room to facilitate allied health and small group activity.
“The new learning space will be positioned on the eastern side of the school, nestled between the Art room, Grade 5/6 classrooms and carpark.
“The other is a significant upgrade on the western side of the main building. This includes removing and re-building the ‘Doll’s House’, which we use for small group and allied health work. The new building will include an adult toilet, baby change and tea and coffee facilities.
“We are also ‘opening up’ our main building and the P-2 classrooms to our beautiful grounds, with the addition of significant decking, seating, covered areas, tiered seating, access ramps and glass doors. There will also be a great new sandpit.
“When completed this will be a lovely space for families to gather and enjoy each other’s company as they drop off and pick up students. Our P-2 classrooms also get an interior upgrade, including new lighting, air-conditioning, carpet and paint.
The architect is James Seymour and the builders are Moretto’s, both from Shepparton.
“Moretto’s are very experienced with school projects. During construction there will be some changes to access and movement around the school. There will be some inconvenience but in a year’s time we will have fabulous new facilities that will make our school even better.
“I imagine there will be lots of stories and writing about building and hopefully lots of students wanting to be builders, electricians, architects, project managers and plumbers when they grow up," finished Mr Rob French.

Strathbogie Shire Councillors visit to Nagambie
Well, we didn’t bring the sunshine of last weekend with us, but Strathbogie Shire Councillors came to Nagambie, on Tuesday 27 September. Recently, Strathbogie Shire Councillors have attended a couple of Shire towns and been given the ‘Cook’s Tour’. The main reason for the visits is for councillors to familiarise themselves with the local environment, people, projects and issues. It also gives the local community the opportunity to speak directly to their representatives.
Umbrellas were up, when they met at the Black Caviar statue, on Jacobsen’s Outlook. The weather was not terribly welcoming, however it was decided to walk a few blocks, to the various points of interest. The Splash Park was first on the list, but ‘splash’ would have been the operative word according to site manager, Paul, who suggested gumboots. The weather has brought its challenges to the project, but they are progressing well, and are positive of a late November opening date. The five councillors, gate-crashed the Info Centre and this afforded a view of the splash park and the onland start, to the foreshore boardwalk.
Next move was to the Youth Centre and skate park, off Filson Street. No takers on skateboards, but the Mayor, Laura Binks, did try her hand on the climbing wall. The youth centre was hosting a ‘fashion-repurpose workshop’, that gave unwanted garments a new life. Making poppies was the morning’s theme and 11 year old Alaena seemed to be mastering necessary skills. ‘Glass Square’ houses the bowling club, tennis courts, youth precinct, garden club and old child care centre. These are council assets, so it was an opportunity for the councillors to see them first-hand. The holiday program at the Nagambie Library was popular and the kids were getting stuck into their craft projects. Library manager, Catherine, showed us the new three-piece mural that would soon adorn the space outside, the front door. The mural was designed and drawn by Trudy Oldaker, with Wendy Cook and Joan Loughnane, adding
the colour and life to the project. Trudy said the mural “encapsulated all that was important and good in Nagambie”. It is certainly an exciting piece of work that brings a smile to your face.
Across the road to the Nagambie Lakes Community House saw us greeted by Director, Anna Close. The old presbytery is one of the most impressive buildings in town and is slowly being restored to its former glory, as funds permit. It apparently was ear-marked for demolition not so long ago, hard to believe. A strong community group banded together, obtained donations and some ‘grant’ money, and saved the day. Plenty going on at NLCH, with a number of the programs and projects, working hand-in-hand for the community’s benefit. Anna showed us the pantry, where food supplies were available to those in need. Two to three people a week are grateful for the service. ‘Lids 4 Kids’ is another popular project, where plastic bottle tops are saved from landfill and our waterways, and re-used. The Community Quilt is the first thing that grabs your attention, when you enter the meeting room. In ‘pride of place’ on the back wall, it highlights all the community groups coming together as one.
Anna explains that during renovations, the House wanted to get all the various groups involved, and encouraged them to make a ‘patch’ to be part of the quilt and Community House build. The result is a stunning bit of art.
The NLCH is also there for the community’s health and well-being. You can drop in for a chat and cuppa, you can pick up a RAT (test), you can ask about local employment opportunities and speak with Bryan on Tuesdays, regarding your Centrelink issues. Anna finished off our visit with a power point session, highlighting the NLCH’s year to date achievements. A very positive experience for all of us and confirms the great work of NLCH. Thank you Anna.
Well, the tummies were rumbling as we set off down the main street towards the Nagambie Rowing Club Hotel, for a bite to eat. There was plenty of discussion about the mornings events, and each of the councillors left with a greater appreciation of Nagambie.
Cheers. By Dave Andrews

ARTBOX coming to Strathbogie Shire
Strathbogie Shire Council is excited to announce a portable exhibition space, ARTBOX, will soon be circulating around our region.
Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the initiative, currently undergoing the pilot program in Huon Valley Council in Tasmania, is a unique method to promote professional and emerging artists and makers.
“While providing a professional exhibition and performance space, ARTBOX also gives opportunities for regional and remote communities in Strathbogie Shire to experience and engage with arts and culture.”
“This project has been based off the successful program offered by Tasmania’s Huon Valley Council’s pilot program in Tasmania of the same name and allows for resource sharing relating to programming,” Cr Binks said.
“The box’s design has been improved to enhance its sustainability and features. Once installed, the shipping container design - ARTBOX - will support community arts and culture projects throughout Strathbogie Shire. The schedule and

Undera Dairy Farmer Wins 2022 Rural Community Leader of the Year Award
The people of Nicholls are once again leading the way for Australian agriculture with Undera Dairy farmer, Sarah Parker, today taking out the 2022 Rural Community Leader of the Year Award at the Australian Farmer of the Year Awards.
Member for Nicholls, Mr Sam Birrell, attended the awards and shared a table with Mrs Parker and was delighted to congratulate her for driving change and breaking down barriers in regional communities.
Mrs Parker was awarded the honour for her overwhelming amount of work for rural Australia including being an immediate past president and current treasurer of Australian Women in Agriculture (AWiA), vice president of the National Rural Women's Coalition, and treasurer of a Collective Bargaining Group that works to achieve the best price for its dairy farmers.
Mr Birrell said her tireless work educating the next generation of agriculture workers is a game changer and is helping secure the future of regional and rural communities. Mr Birrell commended her for helping found the Young Agribusiness Professionals group, educating students about dairy career pathways, and spending considerable
time mentoring AWiA and youth in agriculture.
“I congratulate Mrs Parker on receiving this prestigious award which has put Nicholls on the map for inclusive community leadership,” Mr Birrell said.
“Mrs Parker is dedicated to regional and rural Australia and is helping secure its future by educating youth about the vast range of career opportunities available in agricultural industries”.
“Dozens of people have benefitted from Mrs Parker’s mentoring and I, along with the people of Nicholls, are incredibly proud of her efforts which will have ripple effects on communities for years to come,” Mr Birrell said.
Mrs Parker said taking on community leadership roles was something she truly enjoyed.
“Not only do I get to support other farmers, share my knowledge, help build up their organisations and learn new skills, but I get the opportunity to meet and connect with some incredible people both in Australia and even globally”. Mrs Parker said.
“It is such a rewarding thing to do,” she said
Modernising Agricultural Training Across Victoria
The Andrews Labor Government is supporting Victoria’s next generation of agricultural professionals, setting them up for success with innovative skills training.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said that the Labor Government’s $15 million Agriculture TAFE and Training Fund will continue to benefit the people of northern Victoria by ensuring tailored training and investment for our vital agriculture sectors.
The investment will support TAFE and other training providers to work directly with industry to develop targeted future-focused training for Victoria’s future agricultural professionals.
Grants of up to $2 million will be available to eligible TAFEs and other training providers to help them deliver new or revamped training.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said, “This new fund will provide the next generation of farmers the skills they need to tackle the challenges of the future and position our agriculture sector as a career of choice.”
To ensure that Victoria’s training system is contemporary, the grants will support new curriculum design, delivery, equipment and technology.
The fund will help deliver on the findings of the Future of Agriculture Training Review.
The Review outlines how TAFEs and training providers can attract and prepare students for agriculture’s evolving demands.
It also found that a collaborative approach across industry and the education and training sector is essential to deliver the most appropriate training and position agriculture as a career of choice.
The Review is a culmination of more than 300 consultations including with TAFEs, industry, agriculture business owners and students led by Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle MP.
The Agriculture TAFE and Training Fund is part of the Future Agriculture Skills Capacity Fund established under the Government’s $50 million
Agricultural College Modernisation Program which supports more Victorians to pursue careers in agriculture.
“The Review is an amazing feat and a true work of collaboration. It reflects the strengths and the priorities of the education, TAFE and training sectors, and it’s great to see the industry already responding to the findings,” said Ms Symes.
Applications for the agricultural fund are open from today until 23 November 2022. For more information and to apply for the fund visit business.vic.gov.au/attf.
The findings from the review are available at LINK.

Modern Trains to hit the Shepparton Line
The Andrews Labor Government is delivering more reliable and comfortable journeys for Shepparton Line passengers with VLocity trains to start travelling to and from Shepparton for the first time this month.
From Sunday 23 October, all services on the Shepparton Line will be modern VLocity trains, an improvement made possible by the Shepparton Line Upgrade and the Labor Government’s ongoing investment in new trains for regional Victoria.
A new timetable taking effect the same day will include changes to arrival and departure times and additional stops at Heathcote Junction, Tallarook and Donnybrook – ensuring these growing communities have better access to transport, connecting locals to health services, employment and friends and family.
A celebration will be held at Shepparton Station on
Sunday 23 October to mark the start of VLocity services, with a host of local suppliers getting involved to deliver a great day for the Shepparton community.
Platform extensions to accommodate longer VLocity trains have been completed at Nagambie, Murchison East and Mooroopna stations, as well as safety, accessibility and amenity upgrades for station users.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said, “With extra services and better stations already delivered, these trains are the next phase in our complete overhaul of the Shepparton Line – and there’s more to come.”
“Through the Shepparton Line Upgrade, and our investment in new VLocity trains, we’re delivering better public transport for regional Victoria.”
Another 14 level crossing upgrades on the line were completed while coaches replaced trains last month, while works progressed on the new stabling facility north of Shepparton to house VLocity trains.
The VLocity is the newest and fastest train in the V/ Line fleet and has improved features including mobile signal boosters for better phone coverage and better accessibility for people with prams or mobility aids.
The Labor Government has invested $436 million for the Shepparton Line Upgrade, with Stage 1 already complete, delivering 10 extra weekly services along the line.
Work is progressing on Stage 3 of the Shepparton Line Upgrade, which will enable nine weekday return services and trains to travel faster on the line.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said, “We’re giving locals more options than ever before to get to where they need to go – delivering the transport connections Victorians need and deserve.”
New timetables will be available from Friday 7 October at ptv.vic.gov.au and PTV’s journey planner app.

Lost Avenel
Avenel township was surveyed in 1850 and the first land sales happened in 1851. Avenel’s surviving ‘Imperial Hotel’ was built in 1852, the state heritage listed Coach House in 1855 and the magnificent stone bridge between the two built in 1859. It’s remarkable that we have three surviving 1850s buildings. Look a bit further and you can also find a quiet survivor behind a fence in old town. It’s a black mulberry (Morus Nigra) said to have been planted in 1854 and listed on the National Trust’s Register of Significant Trees. It’s thought to be the oldest and largest of this species in Victoria.
The goldrush era saw thousands come and go. Miners and bullockies stopped for a bevvy at one of the many inns or waited for the horses on their carriages to be changed. Oldtimer Amelia Jane Burgoyne tells us, “Another of my mother’s childhood memories was of seeing big gangs of Chinese jogging along the Sydney Road to the Beechworth diggings. They travelled on foot, forty or fifty in a gang, clad in blue coats and trousers, with straw hats and canvas shoes, and their long
“pigtails” hanging down their backs, carrying their possessions in baskets suspended on poles across their shoulders.” When the railway opened the new town, centred at the station, bustled with goods being transported every which way to their markets by train. The super streamline passenger train, Spirt of Progress, passed through town decades later until rail transport declined, and we took to the roads again. Sydney Road bustled so much after that, that a bypass was built in the early 1980s. Most now don’t see Avenel as they drive by on the Hume freeway, unless they’re refilling the tank or the belly at the Roadhouse.
Thousands have called Avenel home. Some have lived here generations. Others are recent arrivals. What we share are memories of our time here and a fascination about those who came before us who have left many footprints. Most recognisable of these are photographs, documents, books, ephemera and objects.
Unfortunately photographs and paper fades, cracks and tears. Silverfish and mice love them! Objects are lost, dropped, broken, sold or thrown
away. Lost Avenel is a volunteer project digitising what’s survived. It’s an opportunity to share historical documents of all kinds and to preserve them online. It’s like a time capsule of our history.
Lost Avenel has a Facebook page and is looking to establish a website to host the collection. The Avenel Digital Library is just four weeks old and already consists of twenty-five files containing multiple digital items donated from multiple sources. It includes everything from a photograph of the 1980 Avenel Pet Show to a short film exploring the significance of the surviving Coach House in the old town, built in 1855.
Interested in Lost Avenel? Jump on Facebook and search for us or visit us in Avenel’s old courthouse on market days, the second Sunday of the month between 9 am and 1pm.
Lost Avenel is supported by the Australian Government’s Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program.

Learn our water story this National Water Week
Goulburn Valley residents are encouraged to learn about the world of water this month, with two of Goulburn Valley Water’s sites open to the public for the first time since the pandemic.
The tours are being held as part of National Water Week, which begins on Monday October 17.
The theme this year is ‘Our Water Stories’, encouraging people to explore their own stories around water and its importance in their lives every day.
Tours of Shepparton and Tatura’s water treatment plants are available to the public
• Shepparton: Tuesday 18 October, from 12 noon for talk, light lunch and tour
• Tatura: Wednesday 19 October, from 12 noon for talk, light lunch and tour
Students across the Goulburn Valley have also been creating water-themed works of art during Term 3, challenging them to create a jigsaw puzzle artwork sharing their water story.
Finalists will be announced during National Water Week.
Goulburn Valley Water Managing Director
Steve Capewell said the tours during National Water Week were a great opportunity for a rare insight behind the scenes at two of GVW’s water treatment plants.
“National Water Week is a great opportunity to learn more about where your water comes from, and the process we go through to filter and treat it to high standards to ensure it’s safe to drink,” Dr Capewell said.
‘It’s also a great reminder of how important it is to be waterwise to conserve water for future generations to enjoy and how much we rely on water in our daily lives, from drinking and cooking to hygiene, cleaning and recreation.”
Goulburn Valley Water Education Officer
Kristy Elrington said she was thrilled to be able to welcome people back to in-person learning sessions for National Water Week.
“This year, we’ve also created a fun, interactive opportunity for students in our region to learn about the importance of water through inclass activities as part of our Water Week event schedule,” she said.
An upgrade was completed at Tatura during the past couple of years, expanding the plant’s capacity to treat 12 megalitres of water per day to 18ML, which will help meet future demand as the town grows. A new dissolved air floatation and filtration plant was also installed.
Shepparton’s treatment plant also received upgrades on its filter systems in the past year to help improve the treatment process.
Safer roads in Euroa under The Nationals’ $10 billion roads plan
Euroa’s roads will be safer for all motorists with The Nationals announcing $10 billion in funding over 10 years to fix Victoria’s crumbling road system.
The funding increase will be delivered through the annual road asset management budget, increasing spending from around $600 million to $1 billion annually.
Announcing the commitment on Wednesday, Shadow Minister for Roads Danny O’Brien said after almost a decade of Andrews Labor Government neglect our roads have gone from bad to worse.
“The Andrews Labor Government has left Victoria’s road network crumbling, ignoring the genuine concern of road users across the state, in both the city and the country,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Labor cut the road maintenance budget by 10 per cent when it came to government and, on top of recent wet years, our roads have never recovered.
“This $10 billion investment will deliver longer-
term contracts to promote innovation, give contractors certainty to invest in better equipment and allow for strategic maintenance planning.
“It means Victorians won’t have to put up with band-aid solutions that only last weeks or months until the next heavy rain.”
As part of this investment, there will also be a review of construction standards, increasing accountability of VicRoads and contractors and a reduction in red and green tape that often escalates construction costs.
There will also be an audit of all state-managed roads.
The Nationals Candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said The Nationals were committed to delivering better, safer roads by long-term, strategic planning across the road network.
“Driving around the electorate I see firsthand how dilapidated parts of our roads are, and it’s only getting worse,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Roads such as Murchison-Violet Town Rd, Heathcote Nagambie Rd and the Goulburn Valley
Hwy are incredibly dangerous to drive at the moment. Even the Hume Freeway is falling apart.
“Just this week, a Rushworth local had a very close call on the Violet Town-Murchison Rd when, while being overtaken by a truck, her car hit a pothole, causing her to fly off the road and hit a tree.
“These kinds of stories are becoming all too common.
“Danny visited our region recently at my invitation to see firsthand how urgently this investment is needed and how poorly maintained our state roads are.
“People in our region spend so much time on our roads and this $10 billion means our local roads will be better maintained.
“Instead of cutting roads funding, we will invest an average of $1 billion a year to improve road surfaces,” Ms Cleeland said.

Leader of the National Party visits Nagambie
Federal Nationals leader David Littleproud kicked started his listening tour visiting Swettenham Stud in Nagambie last week to discuss worker shortages and the need for investment in regional infrastructure to attract workers to the region.
Mr Littleproud and The Nationals candidate for the seat of Euroa Annabelle Cleeland met with thoroughbred racing stakeholders at the stud on Thursday to discuss concerns with workers.
Mr Littleproud said the region needed a clear plan to ease workforce shortages.
Central Victoria is one of Australia’s greatest thoroughbred regions but are facing some serious challenges with staff retention and recruitment,” Mr Littleproud said.
“We’re an incredibly urbanised population — there simply aren’t enough locals to keep our equine industry running.
We need a dedicated ag visa stream to support regional areas and we need to support the 80,000 Australians working in the equine sector.”
Ms Cleeland outlined the challenges facing the region and her plans to support population growth through the region.
“There are so many local businesses, from agriculture to hospitality, who are crying out for action to get more workers to the region and boost the economy,” Ms Cleeland said.
Job vacancies are better than the alternative, but some businesses are still operating at reduced hours or capacity. We need a plan to fill these jobs and get back to pre-COVID business.
“One of the big hurdles in getting people to move to regional Victoria and enjoy the great lifestyle is the lack of essential infrastructure.
A walk down memory lane at Nagambie Police Station
Bobby (Roberta) Cheetham visited the Nagambie police station recently to take a walk down memory lane. Her father was a police officer here in Nagambie in the 60’s, his surname was GRIFFITHS.
Bobby lived in the old police house before the current police station was even built, from 1960 through to 1964.
“Bobby told us a few stories about her memories of the place,” said Sergeant Bob Derrett.
“Bobby recalls her mother insisting that the local drunk be invited to the breakfast table after spending the night in the cells. (the cells are still located behind the police station). Bobby told us that back in the early 60’s police officers had to use their own vehicles. Her father owned a Morris Major I believe.
“Bobby couldn’t remember when her father joined the Police Force, but she said he was born in 1914. Her father’s police number was 9145, just the lazy twenty five thousand coppers before me, my number is 33398.
“One of the places her dad worked before Nagambie was Fitzroy, another place that I too have worked at.
“Bobby thinks her dad may have been caught by the detectives at Seymour, drinking after hours with the locals. Fraternising with the locals was apparently a big no, no back then. He got moved back to Russell Street after that,” ended Sareant Derrit.

The Splash Park looks like it is on the final stretch towards completion; I’m told it will be ready next month so here’s hoping. Similarly, although we can’t see a lot of what is happening, I’m told the boardwalk will be completed in December. I know that weather conditions and supplies have been an issue so naturally there are delays.
Council has been advised that Nagambie has been unsuccessful in its bid for rowing to be held at the next Commonwealth Games. Coastal rowing has been included but not inland coastal rowing. It is disappointing that small rural shires have been overlooked and particularly disappointing for those involved in the huge amount of work that went into the application process.
Potential flooding with more rain being predicted, Council’s Crisis Management Team has been meeting daily. Where possible staff have been working from home and outdoor staff have prepared a supply of pre-filled sandbags. Residents can stay up to date by accessing Council’s Social Media page and via the VicEmergency website and/or app. There may also be road closures so to stay up to date visit VicRoads and Council’s social media pages.
As we approach November you can expect to see a few more moustaches emerging amongst our male community. GoMen are planning to have a function, details not yet available, however you can expect it to be momentous as it has always been. November is the month where men’s health is given top billing Australia wide and any funds raised by GoMen will go towards Nagambie Healthcare and individuals in need of financial and /or health assistance. A reminder that submissions for the proposed electric vehicle charging station close on Tuesday, October 25. To have your say go to www.sharestrathbogie.vic.gov.au.
Another reminder that Council Officers are now working from the Regatta Centre, for a trial period of six months. The Customer Service Centre will continue to run from the Visitor Information Centre in High Street. Should you need to speak to an officer an appointment can be made by phoning 1800 065 993.
By signing up to Council’s eNews you can get monthly updates direct to your mailbox. You can stay up to date with all the latest news as there will be direct links to important information regarding a variety of Council matters. Visit www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au and include your email address in the sign-up form on the home page. Council holds its monthly meeting on the third Tuesday
of each month (next Tuesday, October 18). If you wish to submit a question during Public Question Time it must be submitted by midday on the day of the meeting. You can find a copy of the agenda on the Friday prior to the meeting via; www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au
My shout out this week goes to Andrea Richards. For many years she has been the stable, driving force behind the NOW Festival. She also puts in lots of hours applying for funding for the golf club. Each successful application helps keep fees down and improves the amenities. Great stuff Andrea!
Until next issue, stay safe! Reg

Nagambie Men’s Golf News
The final monthly medal for the season was run and won completing the field for the gold medal play off in a fortnight's time. The winner was Greg Whiteman returning to form with a bang, Whiteman hit the ball tee to green without any trouble and finished off his good work with a red hot putter for a 89-19-70 this was enough to win by two shots and walk away with the medal. Runner up went to the ever consistent Michael Nolan producing some quality golf with a 82-10-72 rounding out the top three was the steady Shaun Bryant once again carding a top finishing result 83-10-73.
The nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Nolan again having the right club for the 3rd, Daniel Hall playing his best shot of the round onto the 8th, David Love with a sublime iron stalking the 13th and Dave Fullager going close with a nicely timed shot to the 16th. Next week's golf will be a stableford event with J. Lodding on office duty and T. Baldwin in the bar.
10th october
The sunshine bought the Nagambie members out with 37 players teeing it up for a stableford event, the course had dried out sufficiently for some good scores to be posted but the rough being long made it rather difficult for others. Paul Cox was the winning golfer compiling a well crafted 37 points to win by 3, Cox has taken a liking to the Nagambie course and this has shown in his result. Runner up went to Graeme Galvin, crunching his way around as usual. Galvin's length was on display with him completing his day with 34 points. Rounding out the top three was Dave
Fullager featuring in the top end of results once again, this time being nutted in a countback to finish third on 34 points.
Paul Cox was the only nearest the pin recipient on the day claiming both the 13th & 16th with some fantastic iron play. Next week's golf at Nagambie will be a stroke event as well as the gold medal play off for the twelve medallists from throughout the season, on office duty is J. Ezard and in the bar J. Lodding.
Avenel Bowls Club MIidweek Pennant
Round 1 of the GVPA mid-week pennant was not played last week due to rain. Round 2 was played under perfect conditions last Tuesday when Avenel hosted Seymour VRI. The visitors won the match by the merest of margins 14 – 63 to 2 – 62.
Marion Gittus, Pam Pedder, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) after leading for sixteen ends were overtaken by VRI who lead for the next six ends. On the last end, the scores were even with VRI one up at the head. Skip Hateley with his last bowl, put down a perfectly weighted bowl through a congested head to pick up the kitty and take it back to four Avenel back bowls securing a memorable win by five shots 24 – 19.
Ruth King, Rusty Schwab, Dennis McGregor, David Furletti (s) were quickly down 14 shots early in the game. But some steady and determined bowling pulled back the deficit including six over the last two ends to lose their game by only three shots 20 – 23.
Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) after a very sluggish start were ten down before lunch. They then won seven ends in a row to
take the lead by one shot on end 21. However, the VRI lads answered immediately with a four to win the game 21 – 18. The next game for Avenel division 3 is at Mooroopna Golf.
Division 5 play their first round match on Tuesday 11 October away against Mooroopna.
Weekend Pennant
GVPA weekend pennant kicks off on Saturday 15 October. Division 3 are away against Mooroopna and division 7 play away against Eildon.
Last Sundays chicken run was won by Noel, Spud and Norm. Thank you to Neil Beer for sponsoring the event this week. Spud has taken an early lead on the chicken run leader board for an end of season prize. It was great to see Iris back bowling again after a long stint off due to illness. Chicken run will continue to start at 1pm till the end of October.
Entries are open for the Mens and Ladies Club Championship games and also Mens Pairs game. Please see noticeboard for more information.
Nagambie cricket club
First the bad news. Persistent wet weather has delayed the start of the cricket season with round 1 of the Cricket Shepparton competition cancelled last week. With more rain imminent round 2 this week will likely be scrapped as well.
The good news is several new and returning players will add depth to all grades. Senior training is on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.00 pm. A grade captain is Mark Nolan. B grade Will Ulrich and E grade Trent Gladwin. Any budding recruits, most welcome, just turn up and have a go.
Cricket Victoria conducted a junior promotion at the Nagambie Primary School during the school holidays and despite the inclement weather thirteen boys and girls attended. The club has entered under 16, under 14 and under 10 sides in the Cricket Shepparton junior competition. The under 16 and under 14's have commenced training on Wednesdays at 5.00 pm. The under 10 squad trains on Monday at 5.00 pm. James Brook is the under 16 coach. Bo Harrison and Brian Morris are in charge of the under 14 team with Andrew Molineaux the under 10's coach.
This season the under 16's play on a Friday evening commencing on October 14. The under 14's start on Saturday morning October 15 and the under 10's on Wednesday afternoon November 2. As above, any budding recruits are most welcome. Either come to practice or contact Junior Coordinator James Brook 0458802152 for further information.
The first social event for the season is the Melbourne Cup Calcutta on Sunday October 30 at the Royal Mail Hotel. Tickets are available from players, stay tuned for more information.
