Autumn is here, Winter is coming!

ith winter trickling in and daylight hours becoming shorter some exciting outdoor activity is coming to Nagambie thanks to a State Government grant and collaboration of Strathbogie Shire Council and Go Nagambie.

Forget about staying indoors on the long weekend in June, we want you to rug up in your favourite scarf and coat, put on some skates and get moving as Jacobson’s Outlook becomes the venue for Go Skate Nagambie and is transformed into a Winter Wonderland.

“Creating a winter festival is something Go Nagambie has been talking

about for a few years now with a vision to boost visitation to the region during the winter months,” said Sissy Hoskin, Executive Officer of Go Nagambie.

And that’s not all, Go Skate Nagambie is looking to include some live music, hot chocolate, maybe a wine bar for the adults, a mirror photo booth, snow play and much more.

“This will also provide our community with a great family friendly outdoor activity. We’re proud to be working with the Shire to bring this idea to fruition,” said Ms Hoskin.

The Community Voice will keep you updated as Go Skate Nagambie develops.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor, Laura Binks said, “We’re super excited to be bringing some wonderful winter activities to our Shire this year. We urge local businesses to get involved and our community to get ready to pull on their skates and show off their skills on the ice.”

The Ice skating rink set up includes inflatable surrounds, skates, helmets, penguin trolleys for the littlies with experts to fit the skates and give instruction. A booking system will be set up to ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate.

Letter to the editor

Hume Freeway safety improvements for Avenel The intersection of Jones Street and Tarcombe Road on the Hume Fwy in Avenel will be made safer by introducing a safer speed limit of 80km/h, improving the road surface and installing new line marking and improved signage.

Visibility at the Intersection of the Hume Freeway and Lambing Gully Road will also be improved with the installation of new signage.

The Hume Freeway is one of Victoria’s key road corridors, linking Melbourne with north-eastern Victoria and beyond to New South Wales. Road safety improvements have been ongoing along this corridor, including the installation of continuous

flexible safety barriers and innovative intersection improvements.

In the five-year period ending 30 September 2020 there were three crashes causing injury on the Hume Freeway at the intersection of Jones Street and Tarcombe Road in Avenel.

Speed plays a part in every crash. It’s not always the cause, but it will always determine the outcome. These safety improvements are designed to improve the visibility and driver awareness of these intersections and give motorists more time to react if something goes wrong.

Works are expected to start in May 2022 and be completed by mid-2022 and we will keep you updated as works progress.

An 80km/h speed limit will be introduced on the Hume Freeway on the approach to Jones Street and Tarcombe Road intersection.

The length of the new 80km/h speed zone will be approximately 1.2km. We expect this change to have a minimal impact on travel time for motorists on the Hume Freeway.

We will also be fixing the road pavement on the Jones Street intersection approach to the Hume Freeway as well as removing old road signs at the intersection and replacing these with upgraded signs.

At the intersection of the Hume Freeway and Lambing Gully Road we will be installing new road signage to increase driver awareness and improve visibility.

These improvements are part of the Australian Government’s $3 billion Road Safety Program, being delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government.

Strathbogie Shire Community Grants

Ever wondered why most of Australia’s plums, pears and apricots are grown within 80kms of Shepparton? The answer is climate; cold winters, mild springs, warm summers and adequate rainfall to fill the dams. SPC, labour forces and technology all followed the farmers who have matched these deciduous fruits to local soils by planting varieties that consumers demand.

Imagine then the consequences for the electorate of Nicholls (let alone the state or the nation or the world) of the climate warming due to human activity. We have known about this risk for nearly 50 years, yet have done almost nothing to prevent such a disaster. Warmer winters mean insufficient chill to break dormancy of our fruit trees. Late frosts pack more punch when the crop has advanced due to warmer spring weather.

Extreme summer heat burns the fruit on the trees. Heat convection leads to summer storms of greater ferocity and more hail. Fruitgrowers are experiencing these problems NOW, with worst forecast to come.

In the last decade the coalition of Liberal and National parties (most recently under the leadership of Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce) have actively sought to ignore our trajectory of environmental suicide by denying climate change, expanding coal mining and gas extraction, in addition to actively blocking global initiatives to reign in greenhouse gas emissions. Local fruit growers are destined to be the canaries in the cage, for our crops will no longer be viable and our industries will collapse should we continue on this path of >3 degrees of warming this century.

Look around you at the loss of local orchards (and resultant employment). SPC now struggles to source enough fruit to stay profitable.

In my own orchard I have known days when half the crop was burnt on the trees after enduring 47 degrees C and 70 km/hr winds. That was just a taste of what lies ahead in our lifetimes unless we de-carbonise the world quickly. Steady as she goes with the LNP coalition is a pathway to total failure for our fruit growing industries and our regional economy.

It is TIME FOR CHANGE and for this reason I encourage you to vote for Rob Preistley, the independent candidate for Nicholls.

Strathbogie Shire residents are being encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5000 in Council’s 2022/23 Community Grants Program.

The 2022/23 Community Grants Program opens on June 1 for the month, closing on June 30.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the grants are available under five different categories to encourage as many projects and community ideas as possible.

The five grant categories are: •

Active and healthy communities

•

Arts and culture

•

Environment and sustainability

•

Facilities and infrastructure; and

•

Small projects

Cr Binks said the grants were a great way for organisations to invigorate their ideas and bring them to fruition.

“Whether it is a small request for grant funding or a larger request which is supported by other contributions, our Community Grant Program provides a great opportunity to achieve inspiring projects in any one of the categories listed,” she said.

Cr Binks extended an invitation to potential applicants to attend either an online or face-toface workshop.

“Council will host two workshops to guide community members on how to prepare a grant application and answer any questions regarding the application process along with guidance on project suitability,” Cr Binks said.

Theory of change – Start where you are, organise, show what you did! Onwards.

The enthusiasts who make up the committee of Renewable Avenel Energy (RAE) met this week to consider strategic goals and to plan for a clean energy future. It was great to have Councillor Paul Murray attend, noting that the Shire of Strathbogie is actively cultivating community interest and responses to its Climate Strategy.

This meeting was the result of the great work done by the community at the recent meeting where 85 people came together to build community energy capacity.

Ideas for consideration provide a lot of inspiring possibilities.

These include installing a community battery which generates power for the town and immediate surrounds.

There is continuing interest in exploring the potential for solar farms which allow for agricultural practices to continue.

Everyone sees the need to design and install clean energy systems which respond to the tree change development which is being experienced.

None of this overlooks the critical need to build local jobs and trade skills into every renewable initiative.

There was also discussion of the need to ensure people know about the economic advantages of renewable installations and the importance of providing financial assistance to promote the

shift to clean and renewable energy.

Two consultants from mach2, the company who have been engaged to assist in development of the RAE strategic plan, were in attendance. They conducted a lively and insightful discussion about the ways forward we will consider from here. The consultancy services are gratefully acknowledged through a Renewable Energy Readiness Fund grant of $10,000.

Euroa Energy sent a delegate to talk about its work in developing the Euroa Microgrid Demonstration Initiative. Euroa Energy will also be posting on its social media.

The RAE actions will be the subject of some further comment on the community radio station Seymour 103.9 FM on Friday 13 May in the program EarthChat.

Three Tom's in a tinny, down the Murray

In July 2021 John Beresford from Nagambie joined an 80 year old car enthusiast, Tom Barr Smith and six friends on a journey to cross the Simpson Desert in a 2003 C4S Porsche.

Yes, a mad cap idea but not bad for an 80-year-old car enthusiast!

The team of seven were raising money and more importantly raising awareness for research to Fight Motor Neurone Disease.

The context of this venture is sad. At almost the same time both Neale Danaher, and Tom’s wife Jenny, were diagnosed with MND. Jenny is not here partly because she was amongst the 10% of MND sufferers who tragically have the “familial” gene about which little was known when her mother and her aunt died of it many years ago. All this means that Jenny’s children have a 50% chance of getting it as well. The family have been and remain staunch supporters of all Fight MND efforts.

Day #2 Started with toast by the captain and then they were on the water, but it was very slow going for the day as the water is very low and quite dangerous with snags etc hiding just below the surface. But they are on their way to Echuca.

Tom is back in 2022 and this year he is tackling the mighty Murray River from Tocumwal to the Murray mouth near Goolwa in South Australia ( a distance of 1990 kms). Tom’s new adventure has encountered a rebrand with the latest edition dubbed, “Three Toms In A Tinny”.

Three Toms in a tinny plus a great crew of supporters young and old. With ages ranging from 20 to 80+ this adventure is set to make lifelong memories and connections.

Arrival at Tocumul This is a quite a logistical planning exercise as 4 utes had to drive to Renmark where the drivers would unload into one ute and return to meet the team.

Then a driver drives to the next spot and the others all pile into the tinnies! Complicated hey!

We’re on a stunning sandy beach about 26km upstream of Boundary Bend. Great progress today traveling 155km negotiating a tricky section known as the ‘Bitch and Pups’ downstream of Tooleybuc.

Day #4 Check out the Tooleybuc hotel when you are next in the area! Many thanks to Andrew Polkinghorne who is a wonderful supporter who lost his father to MND. Tooleybuc in the western Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. The town 381 kms north west of Melbourne on the banks of the Murray River population of 277.

So much to tell: damaged propellers, low water, 170 kms in one day and a fun meeting at the Tooleybuc Hotel. Andrew Polkinghorne runs the Tooleybuc Country Club Hotel. He lost his father to MND and is supporting our cause.

Sunday on the Murray: The boys are all a bit chilly, so a campfire and a tinny or 2 really helps at the end of a grueling day. The support crew got stuck in the mud for 2 hours, they had to keep themselves warm, get the boats through Euston Lock and then found a nice place to camp on a nice sandy bank of the river .

Our 2022/23 Draft Budget is also open for feedback!

Council developed a draft plan back in 2019, which outlined play equipment and barbecue facilities in the open space bordered by Kheminda Crescent and Jean Claude Avenue, Nagambie. We want to hear from local residents. Does this plan still meet your needs, or have your priorities changed?

This year’s 2022/23 Draft Budget provides for operating expenditure of $31.91 million on services and a capital works program of $15.104 million, together with $9.8 million carried forward from 2021/22.

Climate Change Action Plan - Have your say!

Since becoming the 100th Council in Australia to declare a Climate Emergency in 2021 and just the third to pass this Notice of Motion unanimously, we have been working with our community to develop a Climate Change Action Plan.

We’re excited to our Draft Plan – which sets our mitigation, adaptation and resilience actions - is now open for public feedback.

New grader to tackle Council’s Grading Program An impressive new grader can be spotted on Strathbogie Shire’s gravel roads as the machinery joins the fleet to undertake Council’s Grading Program.

The new John Deere grader is responsible for the important task of maintaining almost 1500 km of gravel roads.

Cr Binks said community members could visit www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au to view a list of roads being graded and the expected timeframe the grader will be working on the roads.

Community members can log a request for works and report defects on roads via several methods.

Community invited to attend Volunteers Week Strathbogie Shire Council is recognising the community’s dedicated volunteers with events across the Shire.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the events are a way to celebrate National Volunteers Week (Monday 16 May to Sunday 22 May) which is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.

“To show our appreciation to local volunteers, we are inviting the community to be a part of the National Volunteers Week events across the Shire,” Cr Binks said.

“Attendees will be given a movie ticket to the Euroa Community Cinema, which is scheduled to re-open soon, and a thank you card from me acknowledging their significant contribution to their community.”

Nagambie Healthcare Auxilary Fundraiser - Cards, Board Games and Lunch The Ladies Auxiliary of Nagambie Health Care had a wonderful day on Monday May 2nd at the Rowing Club Boat Shed, Buckley Park, raising $2500 to be directed towards patient comfort at Nagambie Health Care.

The morning began with a delicious morning tea prepared by the ladies auxiliary. The day was a huge success not only for the monies raised but it was pleasing to see everyone enjoying themselves.

Attendees played Bridge, Solo, Scrabble, 500 and other card games of their choice.

Thanks must go to the Rowing Club for the use of their facility. Looking ahead to 2023 we are working with the new manager of the Rowing Club, Donna to hold the card day event in the new room at the Nagambie Rowing Club High Street venue. The High Street location will provide ease of access for our members as the stairs at the Boat Shed are at times challenging for our members.

The raffle for the quilt was won by Carmel Sidebottom. Many thanks to Wendy for the donation and the many hours of work. Rocky Joins The RDA Team The Seymour Riding for Disabled organisation will be adding ‘Rocky’ to their team after Seymour Field & Game held a very successful charity shoot in April and were able to present a cheque for $4550 to the group..

Adding Rocky to their offering will assist taller riders to further develop their abilities. Seymour Field and Game President Peter Murphy handed over the cheque to the very appreciative RDA’s Lynne Hutchins, Sally Wilson and Brian Wallis.

possible including JDM Services, Nutrien Ag, Hall’s Jewelers Seymour, Fat Rat Kilmore, Tahbilk Winery, Fowles Winery Avenel and Woolworths Seymour.

Seymour RDA encourages riders to increase their horse knowledge throughout the program but most importantly to have fun in a safe environment.

RDA has well trained and cared for ponies and fabulous facilities including a grassed arena and a sand manege and even an obstacle course set over many acres. The obstacle course allows riders to take on challenges like climbing up and down banks, over bridges, and many other exciting things. These challenges help promote and improve balance and control developing selfesteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Volunteering RDA is always on the lookout for volunteers to help run the program. If you have a couple of spare hours a week this could be the volunteer role you’ve been looking for. RDA gives children the opportunity to ride horses with the support of a leader and side walkers if needed. There are several families from Nagambie and Avenel that attend RDA so this is definitely relevant to our community.

It is surprising how many locals are popping in to the Nagambie museum these days. More surprising is the fact that some are coming for the first time, although they have lived here for several years, and that most are completely unaware of what lies beyond – that is, the amazing collection of restored early agricultural machinery and horse drawn equipment on our site.

We love their obvious enthusiasm. In fact one is planning her wedding photographs midst such items. Perhaps we are at fault in assuming everyone knows what treasures we hold. We have increased our opening hours to 24 per month.

9.30-12.30 every Wednesday and Sunday, except for the first weekend when we open on the Saturday (market day).

We are considering new ways to draw in the masses, starting with renewing visits from the schools, hopefully this term.

Comments have been made on how good the courthouse museum looks these days and it is about to further improve, as stored material on the stage can now be removed to the renovated powerhouse and the stage can again become an exhibition space. Quotes for replastering and painting the building have been received.

A very welcome new grant has been received for our digitisation workstation, which will enable us to set up a dedicated area within the museum for ongoing work, putting images of our collection online as well as making our catalogue readily accessible. This grant, through the Australian Galleries and Museums Association, is supported by the Australian Government Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART). We look forward to having a small team of interested community members to help with this exciting project.

For those who love to delve into the past from the comfort of their own home, the Nagambie Times, February 1882 to December 1920, is now available to read on Trove, (https://trove.nla.gov. au/) as is the Nagambie Herald remnants of 1873 – almost 150 years ago!

Our 2021 grant for this digitisation from the Public Record Office of Victoria, supported by the Victorian Government, has come to fruition earlier than expected, despite CoVid delays. Be aware that digitisation is only as good as the state of the newspaper which was first filmed. These film masters are used for the digitisation. Most text transcripts, which accompany the news image, need some editing.

Honouring our local heroes National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. This year, it will take place between the 16th and 22nd of May. The theme for 2022 is “Better Together”.

The Nagambie Lakes Community House wants to take this opportunity to honour and thank the hundreds of volunteers who every week, every day, make Nagambie the kind, beautiful and wonderful town it is.

They don’t seldom work silently, off the centre stage limelight, and they do it simply because it is the right thing to do.”

“Today, volunteering has an estimated annual economic and social value of 290 billion dollars,” NLCH Coordinator Anna Close begins explaining. “Research shows that volunteering yield a 450 per cent return for every dollar invested. It is a huge sector, with an impact which stretches far beyond legislation or the bickering of political agendas. In Nagambie, this impact is visible on every street corner,” Anna continues. “Our town is simply a place where people give, give, give, and then give some more.

And we’re all better for it!”

Secondly, the Community House is putting on a celebratory morning tea for all local volunteers.

They will be offering scones, coffee and tea at the Community House. At this get together Councillor Reg Dickinson will say a brief ‘thank you’ to those in attendance and the slideshow in its entirety will be presented. Those who want, will also be given a volunteer's diploma.

From sporting clubs to Op Shops. Playgroups, Men’s Shed, RSL, Senior Citizens and the Community House, the list of organisations who in different ways contribute to our town is endless. “There is also a big group of people who don’t necessarily belong to an incorporated body or official ‘not for profit’ organisation” Coordinator Anna Close points out. “These are people who come and mow the grass outside the CFA or the church; who go shopping for their elderly neighbours during covid lockdowns or cook a meal or two when someone’s taken ill.

"During National Volunteer Week, we want to honour all of these people! Say a small, yet sincere and profound ‘thank you.’” Anna concludes. “Nagambie simply would not be the marvelous home town it is, were it not for all its volunteers.”

The Community House has taken the initiative to honour our region's volunteers with two simple means. Firstly, they are putting together a slideshow which will run on the TV of the Visitors Information Center for the duration of the Volunteer Week. The slideshow will feature people who volunteer in different groups and capacities. Do you know of anyone who ought to be included? Please send Anna a photo and a small blurb to be included.

Congratulations to our magnificent swimmers Amelia, Poppy, Leyla and Olivia who competed in the School Sport Victoria state primary swimming championships in Melbourne recently.

They were excited to swim at MSAC, the same venue as the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

It’s hard to believe that we are in Week Three already. We welcomed back our campers last Friday after a very busy and tiring Melbourne camp for both the students and staff. Some of the activities the students participated in were ice skating, tours of the MCG and Shrine of Remembrance, the Melbourne Museum, Eureka Skydeck just to name a few.

A very successful Mother’s Day raffle was well supported by both local businesses and people buying tickets. The nine lucky winners who will be contacted in the next few days to pick their prize were Liz Tang, Katie H, Helen Heathcote, Lewis Thompson, Katie H, Hang Nguyen, Sarah Macpherson, Belinda Harris and Rosie Habel.

their great efforts at House, District, Division and Regional swimming. Swimming is the hardest event to qualify for State and our last representatives were Nathan and Blake Fothergill about 13 years ago.

Amelia swam in the 50m individual freestyle and all four girls swam in the 4x50m freestyle relay.

We are very proud of all four.

with parents due to covid restrictions it was wonderful to be able to celebrate with our mums and special people in our lives at our Mother’s Day afternoon tea. Guests were looked after with tea and coffee, slices and sandwiches prepared by the Year 6’s and entertained by our youngest students with songs and actions, including Auslan ,our language the students are learning.

Our courts are finally finished with the new surface looking great. If anyone has any ideas on how to keep the birds off the courts and eating the lines we would love to hear your suggestions.

It was wonderful to reconnect with the kindergarten and have them visit us on Monday to join in with our Bluearth lessons.

Avenel Primary State Swimming!

Congratulations to Mac and Wren who participated in the State Swimming Championships in Melbourne last Friday.

They enjoyed the experience of swimming at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, and with the event being live streamed, I think they would’ve heard APS cheering them on in Melbourne! Congratulations on their fantastic achievements, with Wren finishing 5th in backstroke and Mac 4th in backstroke and 7th in butterfly.

Yesterday was the school cross county run.

We lucked out with a beautiful Autumn day and we were all very proud of the enthusiasm shown by all competitors. The event was held at Stewart park amongst the gum tress. A massive thank-you to Amanda Stevens for organising the event and all our helpers, we couldn’t run these special days without you.

Works happening in Nagambie You may have noticed the large crane and work going on along the shoreline of the lake in recent weeks.

Work has now commenced on the Boardwalk and so in time we will see more evidence of this long-awaited project.

Similarly, work has also started on the Splash Park; come next summertime we could (September for the Splash Park I am told) have both projects up and running.

Whroovale Estate play and gathering space While we’re talking about Nagambie projects, Council is currently seeking feedback from Whroovale Estate residents on draft plans for the open space in the area.

Plans were drafted following a survey in 2019 and we now want to test these to make sure they’re still everything locals are after.

So far feedback has been positive, with a strong focus on children’s play equipment.

Our community grants program provides grants of up to $5000 under five different categories. It’s a great way to gain funding support for your project!

May 16th to May 22nd is National Volunteer Week. On the 16th there will be a morning tea at the Community House to celebrate and mingle with all those volunteers that give so much to our community.

Anna Close has been promoting his event and would love to see you there. Additionally, she has organised for volunteers’ photos to be put on the rolling big screen at the Visitor Information Centre. If you haven’t had your photo taken call in and see Anna and she will take care of it.

Following this, on Friday 20th May will be a dinner at the Bowls Club, commencing at 4pm. Entertainment will be provided by the Larks and the Ukulele groups.

There will be an $8 charge for the meal which will go to those two groups.

Local Sport Update Nagambie Men’s Golf

Rhys took full advantage of the soft ground conditions and the need to hit the ball long to win the day's stroke event. with a 99-29-70 this was enough to claim victory by 2 strokes. Runner up was Tim Baldwin coming to the fore as he regularly does with his solid iron play recording 81-9-72, the third placed competitor was another that likes the give in the ground thumping his way to 80-7-73.

The last 18 holes hit out before next week's Finnigan four ball saw many jostling for favouritism. none more so than Gary Bow winning the days stableford event with 40 points, Bow many times a runner up in the two week Finnigan 4BBB the clubs biggest internal competition hopes to go one better in the event next week with partner Shane Mccormick, The runner up was regular visitor Box Hill golfer Greg Baldwin knocking out 37points, third place was another who will be carrying the favouritism flag next week, Doug Neville producing some of his best golf of the year thus far with 35 points, Neville lines up with long time partner 'the 5th Neville' Wayne 'Bullet" LeCerf..

We braved a chilly morning and headed to Broadford for our first away game.

There were mixed results, with the u9’s and u11’s up against some big Broadford kids. U13’s however, bounced back after last week and showed their skill levels are definitely going to put them in a strong position at the end of the season.

Nagambie Womens Golf April 27th 11 players played a round of Par. There was only one grade and the winner of A,B and C Grade was Moz Fowler with [].

9 hole winner was Anne Burns [] on a C/B from Annette Mills.

18 hole balls went to Moz , and Annette -1.

9 hole balls went to Anne, Annette and Cathy Lawrence -2.

N/P on the 16th went to Ronda Richards.

May 4th There were 13 players for a Stableford round .

The winner of A grade was Annette Mills with 32pts on a C/b from Moz Fowler.

The B and C Grade winner was Anne Burns with

34 pts.

The 9 hole winner was Carol Wallis with 21 pts.

9 hole balls went to Carol, Anne 19 pts and Moz 17 on a C/b from Annette and Jane Bow. Annette had a great N/P on the 16th.

Chicken Run Results Thursday 28th April There were 18 players. The outright winner was Tim Baldwin with 39/34.5 and taking out both N/P on the 3rd and 8th.

Nagambie Soccer Club kicks off the 2022 season

N

agambie Soccer Club is off to a great start this season. From last year, the club has grown to now include 51 children, spread over five different teams. Anna and Phil Close, two of the instigators behind the initiative, say they are thrilled to see so many kids and families get involved.

The decision to start the Soccer Club came about last autumn, as the Murchison Club unexpectedly folded. Anna and Phil, who wanted to provide an opportunity for their own kids to play, decided it was time for Nagambie to join the Shepparton league on their own merits. “It was a decision we made very quickly.” Anna says. “We’ve always loved how soccer is a team sport, providing opportunity for both boys and girls to play together. It truly is a sport for everyone.”

“There’s been a bit of administration involved in getting the club off the

ground,” Phil continues, but when you see those kids running around out on the pitch - with their black and red Nagambie uniforms on - having fun, cheering each other on, giving their all for their team, it is so worth it.”

Nagambie Soccer Club now has an Under 6 team, an Under 7,8, 10 and 12 team. The club was initially hoping to also get an Under 14’s team together but for this year found there just weren’t enough players. “Hopefully - as we continue to grow and the kids now playing in under 10 and Under 12 gets older - there will be and Under 14’s side as well.” Phil continues.

Last year, the Club was sponsored by a couple of local businesses and also managed to secure some grants, including one from the Strathbogie Shire. This has enabled them to purchase two new quality goals, new balls, cones and other types of equipment. “For us, it is really important that children from all backgrounds and walks of life gets a chance to play,” Anna continues. “We don’t want anyone turning down an opportunity to join the club for financial reasons.” Phil goes on to explain that the state government check for children’s sport has been great, but that the Club has also started pooling gear, so that parents can pick up a pair of shoes for their kids for free.

“For us, both as parents and coaches, inclusivity is a key word.” Phil says.

“We want Nagambie Soccer Club to be a place where everyone feels welcome. - Where kids feel seen, encouraged and valued. We want them to have fun and get active. To us, that will always be more important than how many games we win.” In terms of winning however, it seems like the club is off to a good start. On Saturday the 7th of May, all five teams played their second game of the season. The younger sides don’t officially record any scores, but the Under 10’s won their game with 4 - 2, three goals were scored by Luci Fletcher and one goal by Darby Blackwell. The Under 12’s also won, 5 - 0. Daniel Edwards scoring two goals and Tom Shelton three.

“All in all we just feel very privileged and blessed to play a small part in these kids’ lives.” Anna sums it up. “This is about providing them with an opportunity to play a team sport, have fun and being told they are awesome, because they truly are.”
