he Nagambie community festive spirit is in full swing with the annual Christmas Carols being hailed a huge success and the Light Up Nagambie vision beginning to take shape.

At the beginning of 2021 the Light Up Nagambie vision was to start a tradition to celebrate everything amazing about living in regional Victoria.

Already blessed with a stunning waterway as a backdrop to the town centre, take a moment and enjoy the lakeside properties sparkling with gentle shimmering lighting, the handmade locally decorated christmas trees that line the boardwalk at Jacobsons Outlook and the Bunya Pine that is shining happiness everywhere.

Yvonne Dacey has been decorating the town centre in the Christmas spirit for many years and this year she pulled together a team of eager helpers.

“We are delighted with the response from the community and businesses who have all joined us in our quest to spread joy and happiness during the festive season,” said Yvonne.

“We have called in some big favours, the men who gave hours of their time welding the Christmas trees and then erecting them on the boardwalk, the ladies who tirelessly decorated the trees, the community groups and businesses that have supported the vision,” said Yvonne.

Lighting the Bunya Pine was difficult indeed but Wright Out Tree & Stump Removal were up to the challenge with Corey dedicating 4 hours to positioning the lights.

The shopfronts and streets throughout Nagambie are lighting up and there is even a helicopter that will be enroute to the North Pole come December 25th. North Pole 5, will be on display in Penrose Street and available for photographs on the weekend of December 17th.

“It has been wonderful seeing the faces of children light up when they see the decorated Christmas trees and the hundreds of visitors that have stopped by to take a photo, and we even had a wallaby hop in to take a closer look,” laughed Yvonne.

There is no doubt that the happiest time of the year is filled with family traditions and community coming together. In 2021 Nagambie has achieved that, people from all walks of life, all enjoying the simplicity and beauty of Christmas.

Local history grants up for grabs Local history groups looking to preserve, record and share their town’s history are encouraged to apply for the Public Record Office Victoria’s Local History Grants Program.

Applications are now open for grants of up to $15,000 to assist local community groups, sports clubs, schools and other organisations that collect and preserve the stories of our region.

Local MP and Nationals deputy leader Steph Ryan said the grants aimed to support local community groups planning or currently working on projects to secure their stories for generations to come.

Local projects previously supported through the 2020-21 program include: Benalla Historical Society Inc. - $15,000 towards the digitisation of Benalla Standard newspapers 1932-1940 Kilmore Historical Society - $1536 towards transposing cassette audio tapes into MP3 format Murchison & District Historical Society Inc. $1,850 towards Art Captured: an eBook Nagambie & District Historical Society Inc. $11,408.32 towards Nagambie Times digitisation project.

Ms Ryan said the diversity of past successful projects demonstrated how important it was to preserve our local history for future generations to enjoy.

“The Euroa electorate has a vibrant history with many important local stories to share and preserve,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s been fantastic to see a number of history groups and other organisations from across our region successfully secure a local history grant to pursue their own local projects.

“I encourage all local historical societies, schools, sporting clubs and specialist interest groups to apply for this grant to help share their stories.”

The Local History Grants Program is now open to all not-for-profit community groups.

Applications close at midnight on Monday 24 January 2022.

Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed Update The Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed held their Annual General Meeting at the shed on Wednesday 24thNovember.

The attendance by the members was very satisfying as most members were there. Minutes of the previous AGM were read out and passed.

Reports were given and passed without comment.

The election of office bearers was conducted by Di Grant who read out the nominations for each appointment.

Not too many changes. President is now Larry King, Secretary is David Keall, Secretary is Bel Harris. All members of the shed who are not on the executive have been elected as committee members.

We have had a very slow year this year, because of Covid but we were able to finish some projects and complete some smaller ones. We are hoping for a far better year in 2022 with support from the community.

51 Trees to stay The Elloura Estate is enjoyed by many with a sandy swimming beach giving access to pedestrian and cycling paths and boardwalk linking Elloura to the township of Nagambie.

In June 2020, Strathbogie Council granted a permit for a lifestyle village to be built within the Elloura Estate development. The 220-site lifestyle village, to be known as Avington came under

scrutiny when community members voiced their concerns about the stand of trees earmarked for removal.

Two local Landcare groups and objectors lodged an appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) after the initial permit was granted, with the Minister for Planning, Mr Wynne calling in the VCAT proceeding on February 7th 2021 to fast track the decision accelerating "priority projects"; to bolster

Victoria's economic recovery.

After nearly eighteen months of campaigning, the verdict handed down by the office of the Minister for Planning, Mr Richard Wynne was the one the group were hoping for. The permit was revoked and the trees will remain.

Hallmarc has not yet said whether they will reapply to build the lifestyle village in Nagambie.

Community Panel working on Kirwan Bridge options Twelve members of the Nagambie community have been working for five months with the Strathbogie Shire to focus on a solution for the longevity of Kirwans Bridge.

Chairman of the panel Darren Lyons said it is acknowledged that Kirwans Bridge is such an amazing structure in the district both for the flow of vehicles and as an historic tourist icon - but in its present condition its life is limited.

The Strathbogie Shire sort to engage members of the community to guide the discussions because of their knowledge and passion for the bridge.

There have been four meetings at the Nagambie Regatta Centre (COVID restricting more).

The bridge is heritage listed and Heritage Victoria reported to the group along with a structural bridge engineer who presented theories on how to extend the life of the bridge.

“It has been during these meetings, the panel have discussed a range of options for future solutions for the bridge and listed below are the three options that were presented to Heritage Victoria for their initial feedback,” Darren Lyons said.

Option 1: replace existing bridge in its current location with a new replica timber bridge (same look and feel of existing bridge ie; near original) - two lanes and an additional lane for pedestrian and cycling access. The original bridge built in 1890 was a double lane bridge and became a single-lane bridge in the 1950s. This option would complement the heritage and provide a lifespan of more than 75 years.

Option 2: new two-lane concrete or timber bridge located five metres apart and running parallel to the existing bridge. The existing bridge to remain for pedestrian and cycling access. The new parallel bridge will have a lifespan of more than 100 years and the existing bridge will continue to be maintained to a standard for pedestrians and cyclists.

Option 3: maintain existing single lane bridge by undertaking a full renovation; replacing the decking with a timber or precast concrete deck and some high piles replaced with a combination of driven steel piles and bored piles, with work underneath the deck to strengthen the structure.

The life of this option would be around 50 years.

Heritage Victoria replied that they wanted the panel to gain further advice from a Heritage Advisor and our engineering department to further examine the options.

The Chairman and two other members of the panel reported on the process of engagement and actions undertaken by the panel at a recent Strathbogie Shire Councillor Briefing session.

Next steps are to expand on the options listed above along with considered heritage advice and preliminary costings. We are hoping to have this next phase completed early next year.

Body of teen located in Lake Nagambie Police will prepare a report for the Coroner after the body of a teenager was located in Lake Nagambie this morning.

Search and Rescue divers retrieved the body of a 17-year-old Kangaroo Flat boy about 9am.

It is believed the teen got into difficulty while swimming with friends near Vickers Road on 4 December about 5pm.

Investigators were told the boy’s friends attempted to assist him before losing sight of him in the water.

Officers from Seymour who were nearby at the time also attempted to locate the boy.

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Go Nagambie ~ President’s Report With 2020 behind us we looked forward to 2021 with optimism, and with a view to returning to some form of normality, however it was quickly apparent that many of the challenges of 2020 were returning, as well as some new obstacles for our community and businesses alike to navigate.

Whilst the restrictions and limitations we learned to live with throughout 2021 provided their challenges, at Go Nagambie we have done our very best to play an active role wherever possible, to support our business members and the broader community.

Everytime I think or talk of Go Nagambie I remind myself of what we are trying to achieve as a committee but even more importantly as a support body to the community and our local businesses, and that is; to make Nagambie a premier regional centre for liveability, investment, visitation and events, with our focus being to unashamedly promote Nagambie and the surrounding regions.

It is with this vision in mind that I share our achievements for 2021 and our priorities for 2022 and beyond.

As if by magic, every fortnight the Community Voice informs us of what has happened and is happening across our community and surroundings, with local interest articles, achievements by current and former residents and the addition of local business spotlights, all being a highlight throughout the year.

A regular conversation within our committee has been the future income and long term viability of the Community Voice, which is almost solely funded by the advertising fees of our business members, other local businesses and community advertisers.

Continuing to advocate the value and benefits of advertising in the Community Voice must be a priority for the new committee moving into 2022, with a shared effort required to ensure our long term viability.

It must also be recognised the significant amount of effort required to make the Community Voice go to print every fortnight, this is a credit to our team at the Community Voice, graphic designer Patricia Sporle and Executive Officer and Editor Sissy Hoskin. Thank you!

Membership to Go Nagambie became cost free in 2021 through the support of the Strathbogie Shire Council facilitating grant funding to cover membership costs and support services to local business. This was welcomed by Go Nagambie and our business members, particularly given the financial challenges many businesses saw throughout 2021.

Looking forward into 2022, maintaining our existing membership base and leveraging the opportunity to bring new businesses into our membership will be crucial, to most importantly support as many local businesses in as many ways as we can, along with funding the ongoing operation of Go Nagambie.

Again it will be crucially important that a focussed and well supported effort from the entire Go

Nagambie committee be put in place to ensure local businesses understand the value of Go Nagambie and what we do.

Collaboration work between Go Nagambie and Go Seymour has been a highlight this year, particularly the creation of our region's first comprehensive tourism guide, ‘Take Nature’s Road Trip’, providing an extensive list of accommodation, restaurants, pubs and cafes along with all of the region's attractions.

The guide also included plans for day trips to and through our region and championed the extension of the ‘GO’ branding into, Go Drive, Go Dine, Go Stay and Go Explore.

This work culminated with a successful launch due to the dedicated efforts of a few passionate people working across the two committees, and was successfully rolled out through an official media launch supported by a number of “GO” ambassadors and through the commissioning of local imagery in the form of retro artwork provided by artist Chris ‘Roy’ Taylor.

The collaboration continued as we worked hand in hand through the Goulburn River Ranges group, to support initiatives like the “Take Nature’s Road Trip, improved online presence through website upgrades and a focus on social media content.

Go Dine - The outdoor dining activation support program from the Strathbogie Shire Council provided valuable space to Nagambie main street operators, whilst it had it’s challenges and its knockers, it did provide a valuable resource for a number of local businesses during key trading periods, it has to be recognised the significant amount of work that went into making this initiative happen to support local business and their customers.

future roadmap for our town, that will ensure a considered and aligned approach for investment and projects into the future, Go Nagambie has taken an active role forming this roadmap through community and business consultation and feedback.

We are currently working with local interests and the Strathbogie Shire Council on an exciting initiative to create an attraction worthy of national recognition to honour and recognise the significant contribution the thoroughbred industry has had and will continue to have on the Nagambie region.

I am also proud to recognise our sponsorship and contribution efforts throughout the year, some to mention but certainly not exhaustive include; Nagambie Preschool, Light Up Nagambie, NOW Festival, Nagambie Lakes Community House, Nagambie Healthcare, Nagambie RSL and Nagambie CFA. A focus through 2021 has been to strengthen Go Nagambie’s relationship with the Strathbogie Shire Council and executive team through open, honest and transparent discussions on important items that affect our community, these include the Council’s strategic plan, economic development plan and many other items including those mentioned previously. We look forward to partnering with our Local ward councillors, and the broader Council in 2022.

Looking forward I am excited to see the progress of a number of the initiatives mentioned above, that are underway, as well as enjoying some of our upcoming priorities including; The Christmas initiative of Light Up Nagambie which has already begun to transform much of the Lakeside area into a Christmas heaven for children and families alike,

The Community Voice said it best with the headline “Three million reasons to celebrate in Nagambie” after funding for the Nagambie Foreshore walk was secured through the Victorian government’s regional infrastructure fund, with support from the Federal government, Strathbogie Shire council and Nagambie businesses facilitated through Go Nagambie, this truly was a highlight of the year.

Extending the existing foreshore walk from Elloura beach through to the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre precinct will be a monumental change for the town and Go Nagambie can proudly say they played a key role in getting this to the point that it is at, and we look forward to the completion of this crucial link in our community in 2022.

- The resolution of the High Street retaining wall issue, and our ongoing representation across key organisations including but not limited to Bendigo Bank, Goulburn Regional Partnerships, Go Fish, NOW Festival and the Nagambie Waterways committee.

What does Nagambie have in common with well known tourist destinations like Port Fairy and Apollo Bay, well we were all finalists in the 2021 Victorian Tourism Awards, and whilst Nagambie didn't win the award this year, it is a big step forward in Nagambie becoming the “premier regional centre for visitation and tourism” we envision it to become.

Through the efforts of a small number of the committee, a compelling application was put together that saw Nagambie become a finalist this year, but also proved the increasing recognition of our town and region as a growing tourist destination and provided a base for future growth and perhaps one day recognition as Victoria’s best tourism destination.

The Nagambie streetscape concepts and community engagement forums have been delivered to support the creation of a long term

- The Australia Day ceremony and awards recognising significant contributions across our region - The commencement of a youth development program, aimed at creating pathways for youth education and employment in our region

For the new Go Nagambie committee I would encourage the establishment of a number of non-executive roles to give support, clarity and ownership across the committee, something for consideration of the new committee.

And finally, thank you to the entire Go Nagambie committee for their support to Go Nagambie and myself throughout 2021, especially the executive members and in particular to Executive Officer Sissy Hoskin, Secretary John Beresford and former President Tim Goodacre for all their support, guidance and help throughout my first year as President.

Nagambie Lakes Community Market Where to from here?

The area between the toilet block and the Cenotaph is going to be redeveloped meaning it could be unusable for several months and once completed, there will be fewer stall sites available in that area due to the changes.

•

We want to be able to attract new and different stalls and the only way we can do that is to have more space than what the main street area between the toilets & the water tower offers.

•

The community obviously want the event to stay – and if possible, in or close to the main street. If last Saturday (Dec 4) has shown us anything, our main street has insufficient parking for current requirements (just imagine how many more spots would have been taken up if the market had been there too), let alone the increase in both population and visitors we will have in the years to come so something needs to be done to ensure our market stays.

Each “area” of the market must be fenced off (as you would have seen in November) and have a check in table with 2 people. The fencing (as per legal requirements) takes about 2 hours to install & about 1 hour to disassemble. Each “area” then must have a check in table, and if we keep the market in the main street in some way, each of those check in tables has to have 2 people manning them, to not only make sure people check in but also to check their vaccination status (must be fully vaccinated if over 12 to attend our event as per Covid requirements). If the event was to continue running in the main street, and if there were volunteers (from one or two community groups) to help on event day and if you kept everyone’s contribution to only 1-2 hours, you would still need 10-15 people every market to make this happen on a monthly basis, every month of the year plus a few extra dates.

If the event runs in the main street, there is Traffic Management Signage that must be installed by a qualified person. Nagambie Action Group, who has the permit to run the event, has someone internal who has this qualification, so the cost is greatly reduced than getting a Traffic Management company to do it (Nagambie Action Group also owns the signage that is installed each month, another cost saving).

So now Nagambie Action Group is asking Nagambie community for your input.

As our market moves through its 20th year, we look back on how it has changed from its humble beginnings to what we need to do now to ensue the event moves forward in a positive way.

When the market first started, it lined the footpaths outside the shops from early morning into mid afternoon (on the first Saturday of the month of course). Circumstances changed meaning this was no longer possible, and the market moved Jacobsons’ Outlook & Blayney Reserve (and Buckley Park when the NOW Festival operated).

This location was very disjointed, with stallholders in Blayney Reserve only getting about half the visitors as those in Jacobsons’ Outlook, and there were also a few ongoing safety issues from both a visitor and stallholder perspective. A few years ago, the decision was made to try the centre median strip where the farmers’ Market had originally operated from. This has worked in some ways and in some it has not. Now faced with upgrades to the centre strip and possibly some of the parking areas, there are also several other issues to consider, meaning the market can’t stay where it has been.

The decision was made to try operating at the Regatta Centre, but it’s obvious that won’t work either, so what now?

The market needs to grow to remain relevant and encourage people to attend on a regular basis (not t he same stalls every month). It is at capacity using the section south of the toilet block down to the water tower (including the Marie St crossover) and most months has stalls who are turned away due to insufficient space. Please keep your comments constructive, be polite and keep in mind the following:

There is insufficient parking in the main street now, so visitors to any activity other than the shops will take some of those spots. It would be hoped that some of those event visitors would also visit some of the local businesses too. Some of the shops have expressed genuine concerns about visitors attending the market who then take spots for potential local customers to do their regular shopping. As our town population increases, there will be more locals wanting to park in too few spots and as our town increases in popularity as a holiday or day trip destination then the too

few parking spots we have now will be even more of a problem.

when running any public event and what decisions

There are government rules and regulations covering events such as markets. These come from state and local government, government authorities such as VicRoads, Worksafe, Energy Safe Victoria plus others and then when you add the extra Covid requirements, there is much to consider in making an event like our market happen and most of this needs to be in place before the event can operate (event permit).

Nagambie Action Group

Thousands of Scouts head to Nagambie Scouts will descend on Nagambie over Christmas and New Year for what’s believed to be the biggest youth event in the southern hemisphere in nearly two years.

doctors, nurses and a dentist, plus current and former police, and a 24-hour fire station.

More than 4500 Scouts and Leaders will attend a $7 million, 11-day Jamboree – VicJam – which will also bring thousands of visitors (and an extra 2000 Cub Scouts from throughout Victoria) to the region.

Each day the Scouts will cook their own meals, based on menus they’ve designed online through the VicJam app, using ingredients selected from the VicJam supermarket.

Lake Nagambie will host two program highlights. Wet, Wild and Windy offers sailing, paddle boards, kayaks, aqua park, a 30-metre giant water slide, and swimming with inflatables for 550 Scouts per day on December 30-31. Then 240 Scouts per day will enjoy Paddle Away – a 22km overnight canoe expedition, camping overnight at Lake Nagambie Regatta Centre.

They will enjoy non-stop on-site activities and nightly arena entertainment, or bus to off-site adventures and overnight expeditions – a program each team of six Scouts has chosen through the VicJam app.

VicJam Chief Director Jon Willis says Scouts Victoria is very grateful for Strathbogie Shire’s support, through the use of the Regatta Centre, toilets and peninsula land, plus staff support and the loan of equipment.

“VicJam will literally be a life-changing event for Scouts. Parents often say that a Jamboree is only two weeks away, but the kids come home two years older! And once again Lake Nagambie will host two of the premium activities, as for the 2007 Scout Jamboree. Lifelong memories and friendships will be forged here.”

Scouts aged 11-14 will camp at the Elmore Events Centre. VicJam has its own radio station, daily newspaper, and shopping centre, while the Scout medical team includes

On-site Jamboree action ranges from Vertical World (abseiling, rock climbing, caving, zip lines, bouldering, low ropes, ladders, clip and climb, and horizontal bungee) to Tech World (drones, robotics, 3D printing, amateur radio, virtual reality, while, armed with smartphones, radios, and GPS, Scouts will save the planet from alien invasion).

Further afield they will explore Bendigo and Echuca, mountain biking at Spring Gully, abseiling and rock climbing at Harcourt, water-skiing at Torrumbarry, environmental projects near Shepparton – and, of course, water action at Lake Nagambie!

Emergency Planning Avenel will now have an emergency refuge area at the Memorial Hall.

Solar panels and a large battery will now provide he power for a respite area in case of a heat wave or other emergency.

Members of the Renewable Avenel Energy (RAE) group under the Avenel Active Inc banner pitched the project idea to the Strathbogie Shire.

RAE representative Jeff Moran said two years ago, Avenel was without power for 26 hours during a heat wave, and many residents were stranded in hot houses with no cooling or refrigeration.

“The Strathbogie Shire’s Pitch my Project created the ideal opportunity for members of RAE to recommend that the town needed a community area for people to shelter especially during extreme heat when there was a power outage or other unexpected emergencies,” Jeff Moran said.

Funded to the value of $29,000 from a Strathbogie Shire Pick my Project grant, the solar panels and bank has made the Memorial Hall a very adaptable emergency area with a large hall area, breakout rooms and a commercial kitchen.

All outdoor pools are closed on Christmas Day and if the temperature is less than 22 degrees and on days of extreme weather events.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said this arrangement allows Council to keep the facilities open for longer on days of extreme heat where hanging out by the pool is a great escape.

“If the temperature is more than 30 degrees at 6pm, we will keep the pools open for longer to ensure our community members can stay nice and cool during days of extreme heat,” Cr Binks said.

The iconic Furphy Water Cart goes big, better, best Australia’s fascination with big things dates back to 1964 when a promotional sign for a banana stall was unveiled in Coffs Harbour, NSW. Since the Big Banana, 150 big things have sprung up around Australia, but none has quite the history of the BIG FURPHY WATER CART. The “Big Furphy Water Cart” stands at the southern entrance to Shepparton in front of the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) which also houses the Furphy Museum.

The 2.3x scale horse drawn water cart is a nod to history, and a big statement that – after 5 generations and 156 years – the Furphy business started by John Furphy in 1864 is still thriving.

Furphy Foundry and J. Furphy & Sons combined employ approximately 200 staff in their Shepparton operations and exemplify the modernisation and forward thinking of Australian manufacturing and innovation.

The Big Furphy Water Cart ends are steel tank ends from Furphy Engineering that were used as the signs on the original Museum. The tank is 2 metres in diameter and stands 3 metres tall, 9 metres long and weighs 2.5 tonnes.

The tank was a labour of love for employees at Furphy Engineering which was created for the Furphy Foundation and the Furphy Museum at MOVE. Furphy tank ends are highly collectable. The big tank ends feature the lettering of the 2018 commemorative tank end produced at the Furphy Foundry.

The paint work was completed by Noel Heenan and artwork supplied by Michel Signs. Grinter Transport and Quicklift Cranes provided their services for free to transport the water cart to MOVE and lift it into place.

Eddie Perfect - Live in Avenel One of Australia’s most talented and versatile performers, Eddie Perfect, will play two shows in Avenel on 10th and 11th December.

“What a wonderful way to celebrate the end of another difficult year,” said Jen Arnold, Chairperson of Avenel Active Inc, which is one of the organisers of this special event.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Eddie Perfect perform in Avenel. We invite the wider Strathbogie community to join with our town’s residents to enjoy this talented, funny performer and to have a social get together prior to Christmas.”

Eddie Perfect is one of Australia’s most diverse, respected and prolific writer/ composer/

performers. His most recent work as composer of Beetlejuice The Musical on Broadway won him a nomination for Best Original Score at the 2019 Tony Awards. In Australia he wrote and starred in Shane Warne The Musical and played politician Alexander Downer in Keating! The Musical.

Eddie’s television credits include the series regular role of Mick in Offspring and as a presenter on Play School. He has won multiple awards for his work both as a performer and writer. He will be performing a range of songs from his Broadway shows as well as from Shane Warne The Musical and the satire musical play Vivid White.

The Friday evening show will include a light dinner meal, provided by Avenel’s Harvest Home and Daily Dose cafe, and will be an opportunity to socialise and enjoy local wines by Box Grove Vineyard and Wine X Sam and Hop Back Breweries beer. The Saturday matinee will be more family-friendly and patrons are invited to enjoy

afternoon tea.

Anne Douglas, Chair of the Jubilee Park Management Committee, said “There will be a lot happening in Avenel that weekend, with the Twilight Christmas Market from 4–8.15 pm on Saturday evening and Strathbogie Shire has funded ‘Roaming Rhythms’ to support local musicians who will play at local businesses across the weekend. It’s going to be lots of fun.”

Proceeds from the two Eddie Perfect shows will go towards the repairs, restoration and revitalisation of Avenel’s heritage buildings in Jubilee Park.

A Little Ray of Giving What is ‘A Little Ray of Giving’?

On the 20th of December Keely will be delivering the gifts to Michelle at the local Salvation Army. For those who are able to join the Salvation Army hold a Christmas lunch where they provide a meal, gift and company for people who may not have family. For those people unable to make the lunch volunteers deliver a meal, gift and spend time with them as well. As stated by Michelle, “the time spent with people on Christmas day is just as important as the meal and gift”.

Carols by the lake In a joint effort the Nagambie community came together to share and celebrate the Christmas spirit.

The 2022 Carols were held at Buckley Park with a large crowd of Carol’s participants and families enjoying the picture perfect backdrop of Lake Nagambie..

A Nativity scene and Christmas tree backdrops were on the boardwalk to mark the symbols of a modern Christmas. The evergreen Carols and Christmas songs resounded right around the Lake bowl area and the audience joined in heartily with the community singing.

The program was led by Phil Close, and the Carols by the Nagambie Lakeside Larks choir.

Strathbogie Shire Councillor, Cr David Andrews gave a welcome to the evening and thanked the organisers on behalf of the shire.

Scripture readings based around the birth of Jesus Christ were given by church representatives Peter Darbyshire, Carol Wallis and Alice Long, and a Christmas message by Rev. Richard Pennington.

Musical items were presented by the Nagambie pre-school, St Joseph’s and Nagambie Primary School children, Russell Turner, Trevor Close, and a female quartet from Shepparton, known as Fortessima. Musical accompaniment was by Phil Close and other musicians.

Near the end of the evening a special visit by the man in red excited all the children. Thanks to the Nagambie CFA Brigade members for bringing Santa along on the night.

Bernice Cahill celebrates turing 90

A wife for 64 years, a mother of 10 children, grandmother of 27 grandchildren and Great Great Grandmother of two.

Wow! What life experiences Bernice Cahill has achieved.

To top it off she turned 90 on 26th November.

Her husband Norm and her large family gathered at the family home in McLeod St. Kirwan’s Bridge on Sunday, 28th November to help Bernice celebrate this milestone in her life.

She also celebrated at Nagambie Healthcare with a birthday cake with husband Norm, fellow residents and staff.

Short Story Bernice O’Dwyer was born to Catherine and Edward O’Dwyer at home in Newtown on November 26th, 1931 at Toowoomba Queensland.

She started school at Highfields State School as the family lived at Spring Bluff then.

Then the family moved back to Toowoomba and Bernice walked to “Our lady of Lourdes” school. It was a long walk, 6kms each way (they did not have the money for the bus.)

Bernice said “One childhood memory I have was that I was happiest when I was working on the farm and milking cows, herding cattle, and having the three dogs to help me, Spider, Brutus and Beppy.

We had to milk six cows with my brother Pat before school and again at 5pm.

On a Sunday evening we all gathered around the piano to sing Irish songs.

She completed her secondary schooling done at St Ursulas’s College.

When I left school I worked at Rickman’s at the cash desk for a short while.

One day I decided to go up to the St Vincent’s Hospital and book in to do training as a nurse.

After four years Bernice graduated from St Vincent’s Hospital in Toowoomba as a registered nurse.

Bernice’s family compiled a Living Tribute to her this year. These are some of the reflections from that time.

“I actually topped my year. I don’t think I have told anyone that. My graduation was held at the Toowoomba Town hall and I was elected to introduce all the graduates.” She said.

“The two most influential people for me were Mum and Father. Dad for his work ethic and honesty and mum for being a wonderful woman, hard working, honest and a gentle woman.” Bernice said.

Bernice decided in 1956 (the year of the Melbourne Olympics) to move to Melbourne to obtain her Midwifery degree which took a year at the Footscray Hospital and then she worked in theatre for 12 months.

I was asked what do I value most. I said, my family and my children, they are my life.

She met her future husband Norman Cahill on a blind date through close friends.

After six weeks, Norm wrote to Bernice’s father Ned O’Dwyer to seek permission to officially court her.

They announced their engagement on her birthday, 26 November at the home of the people who arranged their first meeting.

Bernice’s mother Catherine became ill so Norm resigned from his job as a printer and travelled to Toowoomba where he was employed at the Star Printing Company and boarded with close friends of the O’Dwyer family.

Bernice and Norm were married on Saturday, 19 August, 1957, at a Monday morning ceremony, with a full nuptial mass; at St Anthony’s church in Harristown and the celebrant was Bernice’s Brother Father Brian O’Dwyer.

The Cahill’s were blessed with 10 children.

Bernadette, Danny, Catherine, Mary, Susan, Michael, Genevieve, Norman, Louise and Sarah and with their partners have blessed Bernice and Norm with 27 grand children and this year, two great great grandchildren.

The Cahill’s bought a property at Glen Waverly and started a Tennis coaching centre which lasted until 1988.

They moved to Murchison for nine years and when Norm’s parents passed away they moved to Kirwan’s Bridge in 1997.

I always prayed that I would be a good mother.

There were many challenges, but I loved every moment. I love knowing that God had given me another human being to care for.”

Bernice was also asked for her Living Tribute “If you could relive a moment of your life what would it be?” she replied. “My wedding day. I married the man I love.”

Bernice enjoyed reading, especially fiction novels or murder mysteries and with Norm the couple’s social activities included being on the Neighbourhood Watch, in the Nagambie Tennis club and St Malachy’s church groups and they enjoyed the ecumenical get togethers with other church folk.

Swimming & Water Safety Since 1976 The last two years have been a wild rollercoaster for Victoria, especially in Victoria as we have endured record-breaking and painful lockdowns that have restricted our every movement and stopped us from doing the things we love each and every day.

As Victoria is nearing its goal in reaching double dose vaccinations VICSWIM is proud to bring to its community that the Summer Kidz program is well and truly underway with planning being completed each and every day!

The VICSWIM Summer Kidz program was established in 1976 and has been extremely successful in providing children between the ages of 4-13 the opportunity to develop a range of skills

and positive experiences in relation to water safety, confidence and competence in the water.

This program is an amazing opportunity for young kids to learn and swim, undergoing a water safety program held over the first three weeks of January 2022, with each week consisting of five consecutive 30-minute lessons, Monday-Friday.

The dates for the 2022 program are as follows; Week 1: Monday 3 January – Friday 7 January Week 2: Monday 10 January – Friday 14 January Week 3: Monday 17 January – Friday 21 January The cost of the VICSWIM Summer Kidz program remains at $30 per week with an additional $5 booking fee to ensure the program complies with Covid-Safe requirements. The booking fee will apply when you make a transaction and is not per child, per week or per class.

As noted, planning for this awesome program is well and truly underway with VicSwim securing a

number of new and returning venues for programs to run across both metro and regional areas of the state.

Avenel Primary Ross’s Report

Tree decorating Today our 3yo Kindergarten Children ventured down to the lake to decorate one of the Christmas trees.

After decorating our tree we sat under the large sweet gum tree discussing Santa and all things Christmas!

On the way to the lake we reflected on how far the group has come with their knowledge of road safety, and their confidence within the community.

We loved taking part in this fantastic community event!

There is a lot going on as we finish off a busy term at Avenel Primary School. We are pleased to be able to offer so many extra opportunities for our students and I thank all of the staff for their extra work in putting all these events together. The 5/6 production of Peter Pan was a huge success. The students have been working hard for months to get prepared.

The Preps enjoyed their first major excursion when the went to the Bendigo Science and Discovery Centre. After an exciting bus trip, the students visited the Planetarium, participated in some hands on experiments, enjoyed the interactive displays, while the

highlight for many was the Gravity Slide.

Thanks to Sarah, Danielle, Kate and Ruby for taking all the preps and I am sure they had many great stories at the end of the day.

The Junior School Council organised a fabulous disco with everyone dressed in their finest 80s gear and there were some awesome dance moves on display. I have never been at a school disco before where so many students were on the dance floor and engaged with the music for so long. Well done to the JSC members for organising such a great event.

Local Sport Update Nagambie Golf Club The rescheduled Goulburn Cup with new sponsor the Nagambie Rowing club was a fantastic success with 72 players contesting both the men's and women's events, with patron limits lifted it was great to see our clubhouse full and golfers enjoying the day. The women played a stableford 4BBB with the winning pair of Moz Fowler and Jane Bow amassing a huge 48 points with Jane being announced in the winning speech as the destroyer. Runners up went to Nagambie most enthusiastic golfer Irene Keogh and Avenel visitor Lyn Carracher producing a very tidy 43 points. Nearest the pin prizes for the girls went to the day's winner Moz Fowler on the 3rd & 13th with two stunners, Seymiour visitor Jenny LeCerf scaring the hole on the 8th and Lyn Carracher with a lovely pitch onto the short 16th.

The shock of the day took place in the men's Goulburn Cup Open honour board event, Par 4BBB was the format with two Nagambie golf club legends, characters and best mates taking home the spoils. Bill Leviston a life member and Jeff Lodding our current President won on countback with +9, playing partners of Bill and Jeff were heard saying 'we were just witness to a master class of up the middle up the middle all day' proving power hitting is not always necessary, congratulation Bill & Jeff. Runners up going oh so close and only being beaten by one hole on a last nine count back went to Alby Seenan and Terry Lowis, two players always able to find form at the right time. Nearest the pins went to rare visitor Daniel Allen with a peach on the 3rd, Peter Lawrence flaying one onto the 8th, Tim Baldwin a regular pin seeker on the 13th and Terry Lowis caressing the 16th. The Nagambie golf club would like to thank our day's sponsor the Nagambie Rowing club, all our ground staff volunteers with the course in excellent order and our lady caterers for a superb lunch. Next week's golf is a stroke monthly medal as well as the 1st round of the Summer trophy on office duty is G. Bow and in the bar P. Neville.

The long road trip to Kyabram yielded just two points for Avenel in the Goulburn Valley Playing Area division 2 round 3 match. Kyabram were the overall winners 14 -77 to Avenel 2 – 69.

Nagambie Men’s Golf News Harold Rayner turns his recent good form into a Monthly Medal with a 92-26-66, Rayner one of the Nagambie golf clubs many Octogenarian golfers showed the younger bred he still has it and after listening to his winners speech he still wants it. Runner up on the day was Shane McCormick finishing in his familiar position with a handicap destroying 79-10-69, rounding out the top three was another veteran and Nagambie golf club favourite Alby Seenan nutting out a 89-19-70.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Terry Lowis on the 3rd & 13th both ending up close enough to kick in and ``PinHead" was the pin seeker Lindsay Hall on the 8th.

Next week's golf will be a sponsored event the annual Cross Country composite course 2 man ambrose format will be played with the 'Ray Cassar' Memorial Trophy on offer in the office will be J. Ezard and in the bar B, Leviston.

Avenel Bowls

On a perfect Spring morning Avenel bowlers, family and friends were treated to two excellent games of bowls as the Ladies and Mens Singles Club Championships were played. Winner of the Ladies Singles club championship was Pam Pedder with Donna Rowley runner up. The Mens winner was Geoff Hateley, runner up was Noel Slater. Congratulations to club champions Pam and Geoff and to Donna and Noel for winning their rounds and semi-final matches making it thru to the final.

Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) mastered the outside wide draw on rink 1 to win 27 – 20. Kyabram were in hot pursuit attempting to chase down Avenel’s slight lead, the biggest margin being three shots till the nineteenth end. Avenel then scored nine shots over the last six ends and held Kyabram to four to seal the rink win.

Rusty Schwab, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy, David Furletti (s) were three shots up at the lunch break after both Avenel and Kyabram won seven ends each. In the second half Kyabram scored multiple shots on all but one end to overtake Avenel and win the game 24 – 27.

Ruth Underwood, Pam Pedder, Rob Kemp, Noel Slater (s) found the going tough against an in form Kyabram rink. The win, 30 – 18 by Kyabram came after multiple winning shots scored in the second half by Kyabram.

Division 5 had a bye.

The next game for division 2 is away against Shepparton Park, while division 5 play Euroa at home.

Weekend Pennant In round 4, Division 6 South played the unbeaten ladder leaders Alexandra 1 at Avenel and the visitors took full points back home 16 - 96 to Avenel 0 – 45.

James Wall, Marion Gittus, Fay Hateley, Charlie Kemp (s) only won ten ends but were able to get into the head and hold Alexandra to no more than two winning shots which resulted in a credible four shot loss to Avenel 17 – 21.

Mitch Thomas, Robyn Hyland, Joyce White, George Pedler (s) were competitive till the break being only four shots down but won only two ends in the second half to lose to Alexandra 14 – 34.

With a late with drawl by the skip, many phone calls were made before securing a sub, Vicky Reidy from Nagambie. Many thanks to Vicky for helping out at the last minute. Kyle Pedder, Norm Billingsley, Vicky Reidy, Graeme Toy (s) started well and after scoring two fives in the first five ends, then drew even with Alexandra at ten all on end five.

Once again, Avenel held strong to be only three shots down at the break. Resuming after lunch, Alexandra hit the accelerator to tear away with a 24 – 3 shot second half win to claim the rink win 41 – 17.

Next Saturday Division 6 South play Eildon away.

Ten ladies braved the hot conditions that the first day of Summer dealt us. It was the second round of the Vi Nolan 4BBB par Competion. The winners were Irene Keogh and Val Labas with +6.

The overall winners of the Vi Nolan were Moz Fowler and Bev Brown with +12 for the two weeks.

Chicken Run Results 2nd December Over 30 players played a game of Stroke on the back nine.

N/P on the 13th was John Humphries and on the 16th Peter Davies.

Results Wednesday 24th November Due to injuries we only had 10 players enjoy a competitive 1st round of the Vi Nolan 4BBB par pairs event. The winners were Moz Fowler and Bev Brown with an impressive +9. They may be hard to catch in the 2nd round next week. There were no n/p.

Chicken Run Results Thursday 25th

Ruth King, Ruth Underwood, Grace Kenworthy, David Furletti (s) had a sluggish start and were down 1 – 14 after eight ends. They scored twelve shots over the next six ends to be only four down at the break. With sheer determination and grit, they overtook Shepparton Park on end sixteen to be ahead by two shots.

They then relinquished the lead on end nineteen only to score a seven on the very next end to be six shots up. Shepparton Park threw everything at Avenel over the next few ends to take the lead on end twenty-four and to be one shot up. The Avenel team took on the challenge and produced a ripper final end winning the end by two shots and the game by one shot, 30 – 29.

N/P on the 3rd was Jane Bow and on the 16th Karyn Thompson.

The winner was Jacob Evans with 49/32.5. The runner up was Shayne Kimball with 42/33.5.

In division 3, Shepparton Park did the road trip to Avenel and took all bar two points back home with them, 16 – 102 to Avenel 2 – 89.

Nagambie Cricket Club The under 14 team registered a win and a loss from their last two outings. The previous week they were defeated by Euroa after scoring 6 for 80 from their allotted 25 overs. Euroa were 4 for 92 in reply with Hudson Black claiming two wickets.

Last week they scored an emphatic 82 run victory against Shepparton United. Flynn O'Brien 56 not out and Archie Harrison 21 not out were the major scorers in the Nagambie total of 7 for 129 at the close of the innings. United were restricted to 8 for 47 with Archie Harrison snaring three wickets in a fine all round performance.

After defeating Tatura Red in round one the Nagambie under 10 side faced a sterner test versus Tatura Blue.

Tatura won by 40 runs scoring 111 to the Nagambie total of 71 runs. Cooper Boddington top scored with 9 runs and claimed a wicket whilst Henry Lloyd 8 and Hudson Wursthorn remained 8 not out and 6 not out respectively.

The E grade side notched another two wins and are having the most fun in the process. In the absence of skipper Sam Villenger, Trent Gladwin took the reins and seamlessly guided the team to a comfortable victory against Murchison. Wil Gladwin, Trent Gladwin and Mitch Sanderson ( that is not a misprint) took two wickets apiece in the Murchison total of 85.

Nagambie scored the runs in quick time losing three wickets with Jeremy Ezard remaining 18 not out, Jack Lowe spanking 31 and Brian Morris 19.

The following week Nagambie defeated Tatura by 18 runs in a low scoring affair. Batting first Nagambie were dismissed for 79 with Trent Gladwin 17 and Campbell Baker 16 the top scorers. A discipling bowling display

by Wil Gladwin 3 wickets, Jon McKeown and Trent Gladwin 2 wickets each was backed up by a spectacular fielding display by Fintan Butler with three marks and a shepherd which contributed greatly to the 18 run victory.

With captain Brock Boddington promoted to the A grade side Travis Blackwell is at the helm of the B grade team. With a very young inexperienced side the team is making incremental improvements each week.

In their match against Shepparton United, Nagambie were dismissed for 115 batting for 41 overs. Travis Blackwell 28 and Blake Ezard 24 led the way with the willow. United lost two wickets in the run chase. In the following match Tatura scored 5 for 225 with Darby O'Brien capturing 3 wickets. Nagambie again batted in excess of 40 overs being dismissed for 130 with Blake Ezard continuing his good form remaining 34 not out.

Another recently retired player was the star attraction in the Nagambie A grade win versus Shepparton United. Coaxed out of a premature retirement Rick Misiti blasted 52 runs in the total of 7 for 206 with handy contributions from Luke Nolan 34 and Mark Nolan 27 not out. Shepparon United were dismissed for 171 with Nathan Fothergill the best of the trundlers with three wickets.

Donna Rowley, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley, Noel Slater (s) were in chase mode for the whole game drawing even on end sixteen and again on end twenty four. However, the Shepparton Park lads scored a three on the last end to win 24 – 21.

Now for the bad news, horrible actually. Batting first Tatura were dismissed for 95 with Nathan Fothergill claiming four wickets.Replacing an injured Brock Boddington in his second over James Auld bowled an economical spell also taking four wickets.

Graham Lewis, Kate Donovan, Pam Pedder, Brett McDonald (s) were nine shots down at smoko after giving away a five on end six. Avenel won the second half 10 – 6 but the five in the first half did the damage as Shepparton Park won the game,24 – 21.

In reply the opposition opening bowlers decimated the top order leaving Nagambie reeling at 9 for 37. After a determined 25 run last wicket partnership between Brock Boddington and Rob Auld Nagambie were dismissed for a paltry 62 runs. Rob top scored for the match with 21 not out striking the ball positively from ball one.

Rusty Schwab, Jake Wall, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) were six down at the break and eventually lost by eight shots. They won more ends than their opponent in the second half but were outscored by Shepparton Park who claimed the rink win 25 – 17.

The next game for division 3 is away against Seymour.

This Sunday 5 December, there is a working bee to prepare the green for lasering. If able to help out, please be there by 9.30am and BYO wheelbarrow, rake and shovel. The more help, the quicker the job will be done.
