Nagambie to host 19th annual Lexus Melbourne The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) today announced that Nagambie in Victoria will join racing history when it plays host to 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.

Nagambie will host the iconic trophy on Saturday 24 July, with local tourism organisation Go Nagambie planning a range of community events to celebrate the Cup’s visit.

Once selected as a tour destination, communities are supported by the VRC to plan and host a range of memorable community events during the Cup’s visit, with a stable of racing legends also accompanying the Cup as Tour Ambassadors.

Nagambie will join 29 other towns and cities across Australia that will be part of the 19th annual tour, which will see the magic of the People’s Cup shared with towns and communities across Australia.

Executive Officer of Nagambie Lakes Tourism and Commerce Sissy Hoskin said the community was excited to welcome the Lexus Melbourne Cup back to Nagambie as part of the 2021 tour.

"We look forward to welcoming the iconic trophy to Nagambie when it visits in July as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.

“Our town is the epicentre of Victoria's thoroughbred breeding industry and the home of

many Melbourne Cup winners and we can't wait to celebrate our part in racing history."

Nagambie will also be part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which will give 24 Cup Tour destinations across Australia the opportunity to be allocated a barrier for the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The town which draws the barrier of the Lexus Melbourne Cup-winning horse will be presented with a cash prize of $50,000 to put towards a nominated charity for a local community initiative.

“The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will make a special visit to Seymour on Saturday morning while enjoying a heritage train journey organised

through the Seymour Heritage Railway Centre.

Our collaboration with Go Seymour has made this possible,” said Sissy.

“After a walk through the business district of Station Street, the Lexus Melbourne Cup will be displayed in the refreshment rooms at the Seymour Station. There will be an opportunity for photographs with the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup and the heritage train carriages will be on display,” added Sissy.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will then travel via train from Seymour to Nagambie where an evening with racing identities will be held at Zephyrz - Restaurant And Bar. Continued next page...

80 Years Young Member Lyn Millar recently celebrated her 80th birthday with friends and players of the Nagambie Bowls Club. Many readers who know Lyn would question this age with her youthful appearance, but yes the age is correct!

Lyn and husband Keith left Kerang in 2016 to take up residence in Nagambie. Both have become valuable members of the Bowls Club and regularly enjoy their Friday nights drinks with others.

Lyn and Keith's family are quite extended with daughter Michelle, sons Glenn and Rohan, 5 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren (with 1 on the way). We hope Lyn's family get to celebrate this milestone with her at some stage (COVID pending)

Help set our Climate Change priorities Strathbogie Shire residents are being invited to help set mitigation, adaptation and resilience actions to address Climate Change by attending a public forum on July 15.

The forum is the next step in Strathbogie Shire’s Council’s work to address the impacts of Climate Change.

Council recently became the 100th Council in Australia to declare a Climate Emergency and just the third to pass this Notice of Motion unanimously.

Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn, said a panel of climate experts had been assembled to share their Expertise.

“We’ve got panellist coming who will share their expertise and knowledge, along with information about work they’re doing and provide our community with the opportunity to ask questions,” Cr Raeburn said.

“We’ll also use this forum as an opportunity to work with our community to start prioritising and setting our mitigation actions as we work with you to develop a Climate Change Action Plan.”

Panellists include: • Professor Kate Auty. EPA chair, former Victorian Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability and ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment • Cr Jenny O’Connor. Mayor – Indigo Council • Bronwyn Chapman. Executive Officer Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance • Cr Sally Hayes-Burke. Councillor Strathbogie Shire Council • Cam Klose. Campaign Director – Farmers for Climate Action The forum will be independently facilitated by Indigo Power Chair Ann Telford – to ensure everyone has an opportunity to share their views, ask questions and help us prioritise our Climate Change actions.

The forum is being held on Thursday, July 15 from 6pm to 8pm at the Longwood Community Centre.

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will celebrate 19 years on the road.

“The VRC is pleased to be taking the iconic Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy back on the road after restricted travel last year, and sharing it with the nation again,” Mr Wilson said.

“Now in its 19th year, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour allows local communities to come together to share stories, celebrate their favourite racing moments and to raise funds for local community charities and initiatives in their town.

“The tour also plays an important role in showcasing these towns and communities with

people across Australia and the world.

“The addition of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep two years ago has added another wonderful dimension to the tour and we look forward to sharing $50,000 with the successful community later this year.”

Chief Executive of Lexus Australia, Scott Thompson, said as Principal Partner of the VRC they were honoured to again be driving this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.

New disability worker registration gives regional Victorians with disability a safe choice Victoria’s disability workforce will be stronger and safer under a new Victorian Government disability worker registration scheme, giving regional Victorians with disability greater choice and better protections.

The first scheme of its kind in Australia, voluntary disability worker registration will open on 1 July to allow workers to be independently assessed by the Disability Worker Registration Board of Victoria.

Across the disability sector, different onboarding checks, standards and screenings in place for disability workers may vary in consistency or may not exist in some cases. Registration fills a critical gap by ensuring registered disability workers meet rigorous standards and are assessed for safety, skills and professionalism, no matter how they are employed or how the services they deliver are funded.

By becoming registered, disability workers can demonstrate their commitment to upholding the safety and quality of the workforce for people with disability. By registering from 1 July, disability workers will not be charged a fee in the first year and can have their experience recognised without needing a qualification.

People with disability and their carers will be able to easily check if a disability worker is registered through a public list on the Victorian Disability Worker Commission website.

Melanie Eagle, Chair of the Disability Worker Registration Board of Victoria, which regulates registered workers and sets their standards, said everyone living with disability deserves a safe choice.

“For someone living with disability, knowing their worker is registered provides confidence they have the right skills to deliver high quality services.

“Registration supports increased professionalisation in disability work and for people seeking services to find workers they know have been independently assessed as safe, skilled and professional.”

Victorian Disability Worker Commissioner Dan Stubbs said: “I’m really pleased to be part of implementing a registration program that recognises the excellent, high-quality work so many disability workers do in Victoria.”

Disability workers can apply to register starting 1 July at vdwc.vic.gov.au.

The new safeguards were established in response to recommendations of the Victorian Parliament’s 2016 Inquiry into abuse in disability services which evidenced alarming abuse and neglect of Victorians with disability, including in regional areas. The launch of worker registration also shadows the current Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability, which has heard cases of the disturbing mistreatment of regional Victorians with disability.

Registered disability workers will be able to use a legal title to reflect their status and must continue to meet registration standards to renew their registration each year.

SPOTLIGHT This week the Community Voice caught up with Rebecca Baker, owner and Pharmacist at Rebecca Baker Pharmacy in Nagambie.

Rebecca Baker Pharmacy provides a professional, safe, and personalised pharmacy service to every person who walks through the door. Trust doesn’t come easy, it needs to be built and cultivated, and Rebecca has mastered the technique offering a valuable resource to the community it serves, by supporting and improving a patient’s healthcare outcomes.

Rebecca’s childhood was spent growing up in New Gisborne, after her parents opted for a tree change, relocating from Carnegie in Melbourne.

“New Gisborne was a great place to grow up with plenty of space for a horse, cows and sheep on Mum and Dad’s farm.

“I went to New Gisborne Primary School and then to secondary school at Braemar College, Woodend.

From there I moved to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Monash University in Parkville,” said Rebecca.

Rebecca’s initial years as a qualified Pharmacist were spent in Hospital Pharmacies - PANCH Hospital in Preston (replaced by the Northern Hospital) and Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. Rebecca always wanted to move back to the country, and jumped at the opportunity to move to Seymour to work in a community Pharmacy “I moved to Seymour to work in a community Pharmacy at Gary Pollard Pharmacy.

“I really enjoy the relationships you build in Community Pharmacy, seeing the same people on a regular basis,” said Rebecca.

Pharmacists are well sought after across the country, so what was it that enticed Rebecca to choose Nagambie?

“I had an opportunity to go into partnership with my then employers at the Nagambie Pharmacy and that's where I've loved and stayed ever since,” said Rebecca.

Big backyards and room to move made the decision to call Nagambie home an easy one.

“I fell in love with a house for sale that was on a big block.

There was room for the kids to run around and space to keep a few chooks!

“It made sense to move and be closer to work and the children’s school where they could safely walk or ride if needed. My parents moved to Nagambie not long after, which was a bonus. Nagambie is a great community to live in and raise a family,” said Rebecca.

A partnership consisting of Rebecca, Gary Pollard and Shan Stephen purchased the Nagambie Pharmacy from Paul and Rosemary Stevens when they retired after 40 years of ownership in 2005.

“We were fortunate to purchase the pharmacy. Goodness, where have those years gone! I wish some days that we had continued the tradition of closing for lunch,” laughed Rebecca.

“The business, with hard work, the support of the local community and a wonderful staff has grown with the town over the years. We look forward to moving to bigger premises later this year, where we will be able to offer a greater range and more services to the community,” said Rebecca.

So, there's quite a crew when we all get together,” said Rebecca.

We asked Rebecca what she likes most about living in regional Victoria, apart from the home baked treats?

“A quieter pace - less traffic. It's great to be able to enjoy the countryside and still be only 1.5 hours from the city of Melbourne,” said Rebecca.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic hundreds of community pharmacies have remained open to serve patients and residents, dispensing vital medicines, going above and beyond because they are connected to their communities and committed to the health needs of their patients.

“Nagambie is a welcoming community, with beautiful people and situated on a picturesque lake and waterway.

It's inevitable that other people will want to share in this special place and the town will continue to develop and grow. It's great to see the main street attracting new business and gradually filling with lovely places to explore and dine at. Hopefully the population growth is maintained at a rate to allow adequate infrastructure to keep pace internet, power, water, parking,” said Rebecca

“We've been fortunate to be able to keep our doors open and operate with the 'new' normal covid safe guidelines.

What plans does Rebecca Baker Pharmacy have for the remainder of 2021?

“We've focused on our delivery services and the implementation of electronic services such as e-scripts have been fast forwarded,” said Rebecca.

“Our focus is to be all set up in our new premises at the FW Parris old store and see our plans come to fruition,” said Rebecca.

Rebecca has many memorable Nagambie experiences with customers but there is one in particular that springs to mind.

Nagambie knows the value and quality of Rebecca Baker Pharmacy, and trusts and respects their pharmacist and pharmacy staff who continue to strive to deliver the best possible value to their clients.

Updates on Kirwans Bridge Fourteen people have put their hand up to be on the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel to help decide the future of our historic bridge. The group has elected Darren Lyons as Chair of future meetings. Meetings will initially be held fortnightly and we’ll continue to keep you updated.

While on the topic of Kirwans Bridge, maintenance works are expected to take place from July 19-21. As a result the bridge will be closed during this time. Now water levels have risen we can replace the 22 planks scheduled for works.

Temporary closure of Mullers Rd Mullers Rd will be temporarily closed this week for the removal of trees close to the roadside edge. We’re happy to be completing these works to further improve on the drainage works and sealing works we recently completed.

We’re now inviting submissions for experienced operators of municipal pool to operate and manage our four pools in Avenel, Euroa, Violet Town and Nagambie.

Council will celebrate NAIDOC Week with a flag You’re invited to help set mitigation, adaptation and resilience actions to address Climate Change by attending our public forum.

It’s a seasonal summer contract with the contractor to start in the first week of November, pools to open the first week of December and close the second week of March.

The forum is the next step in our work to address the impacts of Climate Change and will be held on Thursday, July 15 from 6pm to 8pm at the Longwood Community Centre.

Jim Webster's Obituary Local well known and respected Nagambie man Jim Webster was laid to rest at Nagambie Cemetery on 21 st June 2021.

Jim was born in Melbourne in 1939, the youngest child to Edna and Jack Webster who lived in Sunshine. Jim attended Sunshine State School and he began his working life as a paperboy. He sold newspapers at H.V. McKay, Sunshine Harvesters and did an apprenticeship in Motor Mechanics at Titfords Garage from 1955, and worked at Tut Bryant’s whilst studying at Richmond Technical School. He did field service and repaired boats.

In 1959 Jim married Norma Minahan in Melbourne. Lorraine Perry was Norma’s cousin and her bridesmaid at their wedding. Jim and Norma loved ballroom dancing and going to the old time dances around Melbourne. They moved to Nagambie in 1961 so Jim could work for F.W. Parris & Sons. 1961-1969.

Jim and Norma welcomed daughter Christine who was born on Christmas Day 1961. When Christine was two years of age, her mother died in a car accident.

In 1965 Jim married Lorraine Perry, at St John’s Church of England in Nagambie where her parents were married. They lived on a farm at Tabilk for five years before moving into their new home in Nagambie. They were blessed with four children, Adam in 1965, Kim in 1967, Sally-Anne in 1969 and Steven in 1972.

Early in his career he had to work out how to assemble bitumen laying machines coming in from England. He repaired bulldozers and boats; manufactured wheel lifters, jibs and several large gantries for lifting, one in the tow truck and he loved restoring old cars to new in his workshop.

Around late 1969 Jim went into partnership with Jim Gribbin in the BP Service station on the corner of High and Goulburn Streets. It later became a Shell service station and they ran the RACV business from there. Lorraine recalls Jim was often called out for car accidents, and emergencies.

He transported cars, tractors, a bulldozer and such on his Leyland truck, which he had converted to a tilt tray. Jim told some amazing stories of tow truck rescues including a car in a tree top at Mitchelton Bridge, and cars from river bottoms and bogged animals in dams. They ran the station for eighteen years.

“Jim built a ten metre aluminium gate barrier for Gilgai horse stud and made fences and many other trailers, some tipping. He made a trolley to wheel bales of wool, one to move a light plane around, Skip rubbish bins for the car wash which he maintained and he mowed St John’s church lawns quite often.”

Following the death of his loved business partner and friend, he took Ron Harvey, and later son Adam into the business and later on son Steven.

After thirty years the Petrol station business was sold and Jim retired as a general light engineer and made 400 round bale feed out trailers, bale forks and hay lifters for round bales.

Lorraine said how much she enjoyed the converted bus Jim made into a mobile home for their wonderful holidays exploring Australia. He loved the Outback and its peace and quiet and the Kimberley’s and the Northern Territory. They enjoyed a cruise to New Zealand and Asia, and a trip to the United Kingdom, and to their Timeshare resorts.

Jim had some close and long standing mates like Neil Perry, Jack Sanderson, Les Boyer, Russell Hurren, Dennis Mason, John Sanderson and Dick Moore to name a few.

Jim built a van to transport motorbikes. At the hot rod circuit, he built a toilet block and judges box, concreted the bottom of the water tanks and installed safety cables to the fence. He also made a long trailer to transport rowing club boats.

Lorraine said “He was Our Jack of all Trades, Mr Fix it himself -- Inventor, builder, cabinet maker, concreter, painter, plumber, light engineer (usually with no written plan), motor mechanic, business owner and RACV man.

“Jim built our 20 foot swimming pool, the deck for Sally’s spa, a portable ablution room, extensions onto the service station, Adam’s staircase, our sunroom and several car ports, constructed two swing/gym sets, a sewing cabinet, toy boxes, coffee and bedside tables, and home library.”

Lorraine said “Jim was an easy going and very tolerant man. He had a lovely nature, and was kind, gentle, loyal and thoughtful with a sense of humour. He did not expect anyone to do what he would not do himself. Despite our busy life Jim still had time to teach his kids and take them on holidays. He was the best husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and friend.”

Success is not being measured in wealth accumulation, but satisfaction, friendships formed, peace of mind, charity, respect and family love.

At the Nagambie primary school he built a safety ramp and bike rack and fences around tennis courts; made a fence in front of now Nagambie Equine; ploughed paddocks, sowed crops, carted hay, helped in shearing sheds, altered a chook inoculator to fit a womans hand for the chicken farm and made a camp oven, cupboards, tent poles and pegs for the Girl Guides.

Jim built the roof of the local amenities block in High Street, raised flag poles and erected the pelican onto the post by the lake.

Our goal was to get the message out there as broadly as we could.

2. The refusal flies in the face of the Council’s highly qualified professional staff who recommended that a permit be granted.

To go back to start – Council is working hard to improve its communications and engagement.

We believe very strongly that we will make better decisions if we work with the community.

We do not believe this process is an “overreach” of Council or officers. To bring us back to the start, we believe in community engagement and community-based decision-making.

3. The refusal also ignores the fact that not one of the seven statutory authorities, to which the permit had to be referred under the planning laws, opposed the granting of a permit.

We, as in the Country of Australia, have a Federal Government that oversees our United Nations involvement, so our ‘rules’ are already set as to what we should or should not do and be mindful of, this flows from our Federal head downwards. Why does Strathbogie Shire feel the need to specifically re-write in this fashion.

Our Community Engagement Policy (adopted in February this year) commits us to ensuring our community’s thoughts, feedback, advice and expectations are reflected in the decisions we make.

We believe our community should be involved in the decisions that affect them.

4. It seems that the Councillors danced to the tune of a ragtag of objectors. It is my understanding that many of the objections consisted of near identical pro forma letters.

Moreover, quite a few came from non ratepayers living miles away including as far away as Sydney. Why any Councillor should be unduly influenced by an obviously orchestrated campaign of misinformation beats me.

I am writing in response to a letter to the editor about the Strathbogie Shire Community Panel. I hope this information provides our community with a greater understanding about why we’re using this process.

But for Council, our commitment to engaging with our community is more than a policy. We want our community to trust we’re making good decisions and we can only do this by bringing them into the decision-making process.

The Local Government Act Victoria 2020 requires Council adopt a Community Engagement Policy that includes deliberative engagement practices.

These practices must then be used to ensure true community input into the development of the Community Vision, Council Plan, Financial Plan and Asset Plan.

We have until October 31 this year to adopt the Community Vision and Council Plan. To do ensure true deliberative engagement practice we are creating the Strathbogie Shire Community Panel.

True deliberative practice requires independence in the process. They are independently facilitated and recruitment to these panels is also independent ensuring a random and representative sample of our Shire is achieved.

In many recruitment processes, letters are sent to a random selection of the community (for example one in three ratepayers). Strathbogie Shire sent its invitations through unaddressed mail managed by Australia Post to all households with access to roadside delivery.

We also ran a broad communications campaign that included social media, media releases, information in our regular column in the

Last month, it was the adoption of an over the top “climate emergency” declaration which, over time, will inevitably tie up local businesses in all manner of green tape which will be very costly both in money and time.

This month, it is the knocking back of a multi million development near Nagambie which would have brought jobs and opportunities for our young people and a huge increase in customers for our local shops, cafes and wineries.

There are a number of concerning aspects of the decision to refuse the permit.

1. Three out of the seven Councillors were absent from the Council meeting including the Mayor and his Deputy. The Council agenda paper states they were on leave. How is that both senior office

Federal Laws dictate this, State Laws dictate this, laws are written with all this included, we do not need to duplicate the cost to Ratepayers again!

Let's make this simple, each area of Strathbogie Shire is subtly different, don’t make it look like another claustrophobic mean Melbourne suburb, make each town viable, development projects viable in their ‘own’ area, weigh up what is best for ratepayers who support everyone else, if some who have recently moved in want urban changes to suit them, I would suggest they move back from whence they came, Strathbogie is unique and country.

Look at these companies for yourself, see how ‘independent’ their thinking is, then think about how their ‘chosen’ Community Panel will look.

We need you: VEC looks to recruit 100 Senior Election Officials While many Victorians may not have heard of towns like Donald, Ouyen and Cohuna, they and several other regional localities are the centre of a new campaign to recruit Senior Election Officials for Victorian State and local council elections.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is recruiting up to 100 would‑be leaders from all walks of life to train as Election Managers and Assistant Election Managers during major election events.

Janine Taylor, a beef farmer, business owner, mum and Senior Election Official, features in a video promoting the campaign, reflecting on how her experience managing a farm paralleled the work of running an election.

‘Farming usually can’t wait – managing cows, managing the grass to feed the cows, there’s lots of elements involved,’ Ms Taylor said.

After some encouragement from her local Senior Election Official, Ms Taylor was persuaded to apply to join the ranks.

‘When I started in an election office [as a casual election worker] you’re sitting there going ‘Look at what they’re doing, running here, there and everywhere, managing this, managing that…’

‘I was really encouraged to give it a go, because they thought I could do it – and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.’

Not to be confused with Voting Centre Managers, Senior Election Officials are responsible for coordinating elections for entire districts or councils, working for months at a time during election periods.

With the State election set to take place in November 2022, the recruitment campaign is targeting both outer Melbourne metropolitan areas as well as Northern and Western Victorian regions.

Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said that while managing elections could be challenging and unpredictable, it was also a rewarding experience, with many current Senior Election Officials sticking with the job for over 20 years.

‘If you’re a business owner, if you’re retired or semi-retired, if you’re a parent, if you’re an artist, or a coach of the local footy club – we want to hear from you,’ Mr Gately said.

‘You don’t need previous election experience. It’s all about the skills and life experience you can bring to the role – if you’re organised, hands‑on, and most importantly bring a positive attitude, that’s what we’re looking for.’

Shire swimming pools to be upgraded before summer Strathbogie Shire Council’s aquatic facilities will receive important upgrades after allocating Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications Funding.

Aquatic facilities in Avenel, Euroa, Violet Town and Nagambie will receive $180,910 in upgrades such as shade sails, and other vital equipment to keep the Shire’s pools running.

Strathbogie Shire Council is currently being guided by the Strathbogie Community Pools Strategy 2019-2029.

The importance of aquatic facilities in the Shire was identified through this strategy and it was recommended that each pool undergo a development plan.

Here we are, halfway through 2021, restrictions and lockdowns still remain a thing but we eye the return of ‘normal’ life as we endeavour to vaccinate the population.

In early 2020, we experienced our first lockdown – the world was thrown into chaos and we were sent spinning. Zoom fatigue set in quickly, and the human experience we were so accustomed to had been snatched away before our very eyes.

If it’s a company that will bring a large number of employees to the area, they want to know what the quality of life is going to be for their workers.

Are there sports for kids, quality schools, community events for the family?

But in 2021 it has become part of our lives as we take each day as it comes and we continue to adjust to the challenges that are thrust upon us.

During this time, the Community Voice has also had to reinvent, prioritise and find ways to survive the pandemic and remain an integral part of our community in an attempt to keep us all connected.

All those factors are taken into consideration and decisions are made based upon how the community is portrayed in the local paper.

As executive officer of Go Nagambie, and editor of the Community Voice I have seen firsthand how newspapers impact communities and play a role in economic development.

People contact newspapers to place ads, to share their news and to collect a copy of the current publication. Think for a moment about where you live. The stories that feature how they

Is it a government that can’t agree on issues, that deadlocks on important votes? Or is it a government that seems open to doing business and welcoming to newcomers?

Although the Information Age has transformed how many of you obtain your news, community newspapers remain vital resources for readers who want to learn more about and get engaged in our community. Printed on dead trees, perhaps a lousy medium for delivering news these days but it remains an excellent medium for delivering validation. I’ve had people tell me how thrilled they were that they were in the paper. “I saw you on Facebook” doesn’t quite get the same response.

Local newspapers provide folks an accurate, honest and curated introduction to their

neighbours and to the issues about which their neighbours are passionate. They frame the conversation in a community. Usually, that’s as simple as shifting the conversation to be centred on others instead of on ourselves. That’s something social media can’t do well.

The purpose is to connect you to the place where you live. To both inform and fuel your own curiosity about the area you inhabit and to connect that place to the places far and beyond.

Another area where our newspaper offers great impact is in recording the history of our communities and the people who live, work and die here. The under 16 boy who won the league best and fairest may be the significant one historians examine 60 years from now.

Who else but the local newspaper is recording these events? And even if none of the people who make it into the local paper are ever famous anywhere, on those pages, the local paper has immortalized them into our local history.

Some would say that the Community Voice focuses more on business than community.

Businesses are the backbone of our local communities with the majority of the owners living and working here, taking pride in making our towns a little nicer. Small businesses provide character and individuality benefitting us all in many concrete, quantifiable ways. You only have to take a look at the sporting grounds in Avenel and Nagambie, the sponsorship boards on show

The future and success of the Community Voice must be a collaborative effort by community individuals, our residents, our Councillors, our educators, our business leaders, our non-profit groups, and our sporting organisations working together to nurture the strong local content that the community desires.

Kestrel Aviation has been in partnership with Firehawk Helicopters for several years, with Firehawk 1 coming online this year as the first aircraft with an internal tank.

Firehawk 1 will carry the designation ‘Helitak 125 when working on fires in Australia and will operate with a two man crew to operate the helicopter during fire season. The hawktank is able to be filled in approximately one minute, dramatically increasing its effectiveness in both capacities versus a bucket and time required between drops on fires.

A significant expansion has occurred within the local aerial firefighting operators. Kestrel Aviation based at Mangalore has added their first type 1 helicopter. Arriving via boat in December 2020 from the USA N125FH a 1979 model UH60 Blackhawk converted to Firehawk status.

Kestrel Aviation continues to invest in its Australian owned and operated business. With the introduction of Firehawk 1, the company will employ a second helicopter, named Firehawk 2 later in the year for deployment within Australia.

If this wasn’t enough, Ray and Eleanor Cronin have also invested in an Airbus Super Puma which will arrive to be employed as a larger type 1 fire fighting helicopter that can also carry passengers. This tanked machine will be the first of its type to work in Australia in this role.

Ordered by the United States Army, it was delivered as 79-23307. The machine was operated in its later life in a Medivac role with large red crosses on white backgrounds marked on the fuselage. Auctioned off after retirement from the Army initially sold to Brown Helicopter Inc as N796ZB. It then went to Brainerd Helicopters Inc from Leesburg International Airport becoming N125FH. Now named Firehawk 1, the machine will become a welcome

“Unfortunaetly I was not aware of his bike riding activities at that stage, however the presentation intrigued me,” said Bob.

Christine Schindler Maisch is the owner operator of Nagambie’s Stitch This – More Than You’d Expect!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Christine has made strategic decisions at a pace that you would not normally contemplate. She has reinvented and adapted her business model to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and to establish a footing in the new reality.

“I took over an existing fabric store located in Kyabram back in 2006. It soon became a busy place for quilting, dressmaking, pattern drafting and knitting. It was always my plan to open a 2nd store in Nagambie, but I wanted to wait until after the bypass and see how the town developed,” said Christine.

Christine came to Nagambie almost 7 years ago opening a little shop which has been redeveloped and is now home to the Nagambie Brewery and Distillery.

“I moved to my current location at 332 High St Nagambie, 5 years ago. The fabric industry had taken a bit of a dive, so I closed the Kyabram store and made the decision to stop selling fabric a couple of years later. My partner Chris from Sundries Too Numerous to Mention encouraged me to get into the second hand business, so I got my dealers license and became Stitch This – More Than You’d Expect!” said Christine.

While customers browse and explore the store, Christine can be found busily sewing away keeping the locals happy with her alterations service.

“After numerous requests for an alterations service, I began doing alterations for locals which has enabled me to keep up the love of sewing I’ve had for most of my life, and whilst customers browse the store, I get to sit and sew all day,” said Christine.

Some things are meant to be and Christine found that although she had ceased stocking fabric, it found a way to find her again.

“Once I had made the decision to stop selling fabric, it has found a way of finding me, by way of deceased estates, house cleanouts, and people offering fabric, or it goes to landfill. I’ve also been fortunate to acquire all sorts of end of line upholstery fabric and have been able turn this into supermarket shopping bags,” said Christine.

After more than 100 years, an iconic family-run business is closing it's doors.

The duo hope to raise funds for Nagambie Health Care during the challenging ride.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to make it easy for those wishing to support John and Bob in their endeavour to raise funds for Nagambie HealthCare during the Outback Odyssey ride.

“We will do the riding, we just need the community to help us along the way by donating to the Nagambie Health Care,” ended Bob.

F.W. Parris and Sons, better known as "Parris’s" by locals, was opened in 1913 by Frederick William Parris and today is run by his greatgrandson, Bruce Parris.

The Parris’s have decided to sell the property, and as Bruce put it, “get out of the game while we have our health.”

It is impossible to understand Nagambie without understanding the hardware store at the Parris end of town — FW Parris has been a large component of what makes Nagambie what it is today.

The family's dedication to community service that helped make Parris’ so special and both the store and the Parris family helped drive the town's growth from the 1910s to 2020.

FW Parris and Son had a long history of going above and beyond, even talking people out of buying items they didn't need.

Bruce said shutting down is a difficult decision, but one that's been a long time coming.

"It's not an overnight decision, Gladys and I have been planning this for some time," he said.

“I’ve walked around here for 53 years,” Bruce explained of the decision, noting that he started working full time at the family business back in 1967 alongside his father.

“Gladys and I have lived in the community and worked in the community for most of our lives.

The timing is right,” he said.

Peace of mind with the closure of the store didn’t diminish what will be lost, however. The family was quick to thank the many customers who have frequented the business over the years.

“I’ll miss the people, and the customers, and the friendships that have been made,” Bruce said.

Bruce and Gladys' son Robert will continue his volunteer work at Nagambie HealthCare.

Currently he volunteers three half days per week.

“He loves going up there to help out, you won’t keep him away from there,” said Gladys.

FW Parris is an historical landmark, by all means, but the people who run this business are wonderful. Like many customers at the store, the community is pleased that Bruce and Gladys will get to enjoy more time for themselves, but life at the ‘Parris End’ of Nagambie won’t be the same without them. The closing of the store is a big loss for the town and a big loss for the community.

They’re down-to-earth. They’re friendly. They know what they’re doing. The majority of the customers, they probably know them by name.

The property has been purchased by Damian Sanderson of John Sanderson Machinery and Rebecca Baker of Rebecca Baker Pharmacy.

Damian Sanderson, has frequented FW Parris and Son for decades and echoed the bittersweet sentiments.

“It’s been in their family a long time, and we are honoured to be moving into the premises,” said Damian.

“It’s a local, small business. They have served the community well and I wish them all the best.”

“Bruce will still be on site carting machinery and wool. Bruce has carted all our machinery

from Melbourne for the last 30 years and we are grateful he will continue to do so,” said Damian.

Rebecca Baker Pharmacy will relocate to the premises in 2021. Rebecca is excited to be moving to bigger premises to offer an expanded range of products and services.

There are hardware stores like the big chains but you can’t go to a big chain and always get some advice, some input that’s factual and good, and that is what FW Parris has offered.

Fun, food & goodwill at Kelvingrove's Christmas in June Maybe some may think having Christmas in June back to front, but it is a good winter fun activity. And having a hot Christmas lunch goes down better in winter.

What can retirement places do to liven up the winter month for the residents, well Kelvingrove residents got behind the idea of having a Christmas in June lunch and fun afternoon.

So they asked Andrew Boyle Manager of the Village complex if he would be happy to cook a lunch for the residents. He agreed, and he was supported by his co-manager his brother Wes Boyle, Emily, Maree, and Amanda and they produced a feast fit for a queen on Tuesday 29 June at the Village hall...

Some of the eager residents banded together and set up the hall which looked very Christmassy with its decorated Christmas trees, little Santa’s, Christmas table cloths, red and white serviettes and the Christmas spirit brought along by the 45 adults and five children made it a happy occasion.

The social kitty paid for the desserts which some residents helped with and they were delicious as was Marlene Brew’s donated delicious plum pudding made for the lunch.

Some fun games were conducted during the afternoon and Santa’s helper made a surprise visit and handed out goodies to the lunch guests who enjoyed her appearance at the event.

One favourite game was the champion plastic cup tower building one, and another fun segment was the Reindeer Hokey Pokey, and the five children in attendance carried this fun song off with great actions.

Thanks goes too all the Kelvingrove Village residents who came along, thanks to all who helped set up, those who did desserts, the fabulous gang who washed and dried up stacks of cooking and meal things, and who helped clear up and stack up the tables and chairs. It all helped make the event a time of goodwill.

Which really should be spread around all year not just at Christmas.

Special thanks goes to Andrew and the Boyle crew for a delicious meal and for helping break up the winter isolation of their residents by hosting this Christmas in June day.

“We are particularly excited to be able to work alongside historian and author David Willis on this project,” Coordinator Anna Close said. “David has already written two books which have both been shortlisted in the Premier’s History Awards, and now he is hoping to also write a short guide about the old Avenel Coach House. David already has a reputation as a captivating local speaker and people who sign up for the event can count on being treated to a fantastic morning.” Anna concluded.

Ned Kelly lived in Avenel in the early 1860’s when his father brought the whole family here.

Ned stayed in the township until he was 12 years old when his father, John ‘Red’ Kelly died. Local history buffs might already know that it was in Avenel Ned saved a boy, Richard Shelton, from drowning. As a reward Ned was given a green

sash which he famously wore under his armour when he was captured in Glenrowan. Through the Family Walk, you can come along and see the places where it all happened and enjoy a wonderful morning in great company.

Where the bloody hell are you? "In the place to be" Do you remember this catch-cry from the advertising campaign, to entice overseas visitors to come to Australia? Was Lara Bingle the new Hoges and were all those wonderful shots of our outback, and the endless list of ‘things to do’ truly possible. Well then yes, depending on your budget, and now, we’ll not so much.

Stag hound Frankie, Mudgi the bob tailed Smithfield healer, my Partner (I’m not allowed to use the word ‘wife’ any more apparently) and I were preparing for a Winter away, to Batchelor, NT, to be precise. A shindig was looming there, where my favourite sister-in-law lives, having just received her Doctorate at the Charles Sturt University, which has a campus there.

Due to the current “States” of confusion re COVID, our departure date kept extending, but when we got a sniff, we were off, whoosh!

Permits in hand we felt legal and confident we would defeat all opposition to our path north.

My partner had spent many focussed hours, happily planning our route, through SA, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, onto Uluru etc. The shifting COVID sands required many tweaks and then SA didn’t want their unwashed cousins to enter, doh! The hastily devised and revised new vision saw us heading north to friendlier lands, and our first objective of fleeing lockdown riddled Vic would be achieved. We were ever mindful of the prospect of COVID tests and quarantining, as we powered north, but felt a little safer in “Gladys’s” State. Three overnight stops in QLD before a charge to the NT border.

You have to get out and about to realise just how vast Australia is, wow! Endless horizons. We were enjoying our new-found freedom, but had a destination, and with current uncertainties, had to keep pedalling. The scenery changed constantly and depending on the time of day, colourings and shadowing added wonder to the geography. Dusk was a standout, with the reds being drawn out in the many grasses and plants, as the sun set. The temperatures were ideal, warm days, cool nights, shorts thongs and tees.

Mind you we weren’t the only ‘clever’ buggers escaping captivity, with a steady stream of Vic vans and campers, going our way. Space was a premium in the various accommodations of an evening. When asked where we were from, we were quick to prefix Victoria, with the word ‘Regional’, which seemed to have a calming effect.

Our quest for freedom met its first opposition at the NT/QLD border. Here we go, we thought, they don’t want us tarnished Mexicans in their nice, COVID-free State. We rehearsed our plea as we waited in line to be grilled by NT’s finest.

What we would have given for a set of any

other States number plates! Soon it was our turn and we showed the nice policeman our ‘papers’. Before we could deliver our nicely prepared spiel, we were wished ‘happy travels’, and almost stalled our vehicle in shock. Well you would’ve thought we’d been given a Royal Pardon, such was our relief. We gave each other a silly look, too scared to smile, and kept driving.

Fast forward to Batchelor, NT, and paradise. A steamy 31.4 degrees by day and a comfortable 18 by night. Died and gone to heaven! Our poor friends went back home. (Hee Hee Hee) Just when you think that things can’t get much better, they don’t. Suddenly over the next few days the tables flipped. SA, NT, WA, Tas, all shut.

A FIFO turned NE QLD, Darwin, Palmerston, Litchfield, into ‘red’ zones, and Vic also shut to the outside world. Batchelor was too close for comfort, with the forecast of wider closures. Not wanting to “throw the baby out with the bath water”, an informed decision was looming. The planned celebration of 50 guests was in tatters, with flights cancelled, borders locking and everything up in the air. If they could secure a flight, the interstaters didn’t want to get caught out in what was once paradise. Work and home commitments put that to the sword.

First of July was ‘Territory Day’, with great festivities planned across the NT. I was most excited by the opportunity to buy fireworks!

Not since my misspent youth and blowing up our hapless neighbour’s letterboxes, had I played with fireworks. The authorities must have known, as Territory Day…postponed and no crackers for me. While planning our escape from ‘paradise’, I read where former Brisbane Lions star, Jonathan Brown, said after his family’s longawaited reunion was cancelled and he spent 9 hours at an airport, “If COVID is doing anything positive, it’s teaching us resilience and the ability to adapt to change at a moments notice.”

It sounded good in theory and I tried to embrace his words, but couldn’t help feeling like a rabbit caught in the spotlights. Panic is the first go to, as most of us don’t operate effectively, when our world turns upside down. Clinging to Brown’s wisdom, I spoke to my partner about our options, who had likewise lost her zeal for our grand adventure. Do you tough it out in unfamiliar surroundings or ‘cut and run’? As we glued ourselves to social media and official updates, it was apparent the wheels were coming off at a great rate. Red zones all around us and the strong possibility of them expanding to gobble us up as well.

All we saw was dust, from the other couple who had arrived for the ‘event’ a few days before us.

Barely a farewell. After two days of unknown unknowns and the local store being cleaned out (toilet paper syndrome), it was our turn to cut

and run. I was low on beer at any rate and with no crackers, a no-brainer. My partner wasn’t amused either at my lame attempt at humour.

On the road fairly early, heading for QLD and then the long shove south. We both hoped our home State would forgive us for leaving them, whenever it was we crossed that hallowed border Steady progress was being made south. Not many vehicles seemed to be going our way, but a steady stream we’re heading north. Did they know something we didn’t? Bourke, NSW, provided a nice, friendly caravan park community. A fire from early evening was now required and the encircling campers seemed to enjoy adding to it from the stack of pallets provided. Chirpy enough and as always friendly and engaging. No longer did we need to prefix Victoria with regional, it appears Vic ‘was the place to be…from!’ Who would’ve thought?

If you crave curried Goat, then you have your opportunity to stock up from Bourke to Cobar.

Hundreds of wild goats on the roadside, all in little family groups of 7 or 8. Little kids through to big billies, complete with goatee beards (no pun intended) and spiral horns, amazing.

They appear to be at a higher intellectual level than poor old ‘Skip’. They actually move off the shoulder of the road as you zoom past and of all the roadkill we saw, hardly a goat. Road trains seem to run all night, up and down, and no doubt this is where most of the carnage occurs.

Speaking of road trains, four trailers, 53.5 metres long, and they can get this swagger up, which sees the rear two trailers swish violently from side to side. We gave them plenty of room when coming and picked our spots to overtake, hairy!

We did see a nasty encounter where the offside of a tourist bus lost to a RT’s swaying rear.

Open-air touring, wiped the whole side behind the driver out. Returning to base so devoid of passengers, could’ve been awful, and the bus driver should save their tattslotto money for a while, walked away, beat the Reaper there.

We had received a conditional invitation to return to the home State after submitting our permit requests. Coming from an ‘orange’ zone, we will have to isolate until receiving a negative test. Hardly a challenge when you consider all the other scenarios. Our last day sees the prospect of an eight hour drive, 750 odd k’s.

Once you ‘smell the home fires burning’ though, the urge to push-on becomes strong, like a spawning trout. The weather reports were not flattering either, with heavy rain, squalls and near freezing temps promised.

Like an ominous warning, we got a taste of the rain near the border. Bring it on we thought, as our home State beckoned. We were expecting a heavily fortified border, al-a ‘ring of steel’, zilch,

nil, nothing? The thought then crossed our minds, if we hadn’t flagged our return, could we avoid the probe down our throats and tickling our brains, and not have to isolate for three days, pending a negative result. Mmmm, our trail of QR coding may have been our undoing, so to avoid a chopper with black men pouring out on ropes in our street, we were glad we conformed to the protocols.

5pm saw us touchdown and hastily light the fire.

The Outdoor School is one of the gems of the Department of Education and it is set in hundreds of acres of bushland at Greta.

As a reward for a great term of work, the students celebrated with a ‘Pyjama Day’. The students and staff got to come along in their pyjamas and enjoy a relaxing day of activities and fun. Many soft and cuddly friends joined us for the day. These may have been a memory of our past, or our current favourites.

The toys were used for a mathematics task of sorting and classifying. English was about writing what they wore to school and what they brought along, as well as a competitive game of Scattergories, a scavenger hunt and a ‘Find Someone Who’ activity. Then everyone relaxed with a movie and popcorn with our pillows and blankets. Congratulations on a great term of work, everyone! Nagambie Men’s Golf A big field assembled for the 1st round of the social club trophy with 35 players teeing it up on a very cold June morning, the still conditions and sunshine made up for that with playing conditions ideal for the time of year.

The winner with 38 stableford points was Hugh Lawrence playing some excellent iron shots as well as putting the lights out, beating home the well credentialed Michael Nolan runner up for the second week on 37 points and Jeremy Ezard with 35.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Phil Neville firing up on the 3rd, our days winner Hugh Lawrence on the long par three 8th, Dean Brown sticking the 13th and Tim Baldwon going close on the 16th. Next week's golf will be a 3 man Ambrose played on Saturday 26th making way for Pennant at Nagambie on the Sunday, on office duty will be J. Lodding and in the bar B .Leviston.

Seymour Broadford Cycling Club Weekly Race Recap: Date: 26th June 2021 In cool conditions we had 14 riders turn out for the 53k Kobyboyn/Highlands return course. With 19 minutes in the field, it was expected that all participants would have had a chance for the win but the limit group put paid to that with a very strong effort. As is becoming the norm the evergreen Jeff Hibberd led his mob to the win with 1.30mins to spare from the 14min pair with the scratch pair being a further 2.30mins back. It was nice to see Lachie Lee back, turning out with a solid showing. First over the line was Hibberd(19mins), 2nd place Lee(19mins), 3rd Bret Bender(19mins), 4th Glenn Christensen(14mins) and 5th Ian Baker(14mins). With the maximum temperature for the day not reaching double figures, its no wonder Helen Heathcote went through a record amount of her famous hot chips!! This was well contributed to by the Longwood FNC and their loyal support crew who turned out in great numbers when they would have been forgiven for staying home in front of the fire as the mercury topped out at 8 degrees.

The reserves rich vein of form continued as Bo & the boys recorded a solid 122 point win in cold and blustery conditions. A strong 5 goal opening term got the boys off to a flyer but an inaccurate 2.8 in the second term slowed the scoreboard down a little. A straighter 11 goals 8 in the second half helped the lads to a comprehensive win. Blair Taylor Lloyd showed no signs of tiredness from doing gate duty registering 7 majors, while Keith Berry chipped in with 3, Will Baker 2 & Michael Manga Mensfeld with 2 was the other multiple goal scorer. Crackers played another great game and was joined in the best by Jack Sampson, Nick Smidt, Blair Taylor Lloyd, Will Baker and Will Ulrich.

On the courts it was a great day for all teams as we all secured the four points. Our u17s put in a great 4 quarter effort to finally get that winning feeling! Well done girls. Thanks & a special mention to a few of our talented younger girls in Abby Harrison, Amelia O’Brien & Ashleigh Fraser, who doubled up in higher grades to help fill some spots. Also, well done to Longwood who showed great improvement across all grades- especially A grade who ensured we had to stay at our best for the 4 quarters to secure the win.

At the footy, it was a belter of game to kick start the day with the result going down to the last couple of minutes where Sniff’s lads, despite trailing for much of the day, were able to stand up when it counted. In an entertaining opening half, it was Longwood who enjoyed a 14 point lead at the main break, a lead which would stay identical at the last break as both teams added 1.3 in the third quarter. The final term saw our boys kick into gear and register 4 goals to 1 to fall over the line by 4 points. Again, it was the O’Brien boys who hit the scoreboard with Will kicking 3 and Darby 2. Better players were Ryan & Mitch Coll, Luke Cornfoot, Tom Mason & Morgan Donovan. The boys are sitting in 3rd spot on the ladder but must keep winning as

In the seniors, the boys wasted no time hitting the scoreboard, having 20 scoring shots in the opener taking a 75-0 quarter time lead.

Whilst the first quarter was to be our most productive, a steady stream of majors ensured a nice percentage boosting win was recorded35.24- 234 vs 0.2-2. Jamason Daniels again dominated, this time on the scoreboard, with 6 goals, whilst Mark Blake could have bettered him if not for some close misses on his way to kicking a handful himself. Jono Moore nailed 4 majors and Matty Waterson kicked 3 on his return from a foot injury. A big 6 week block looms for the boys and with still a few quality players to return, things are starting to head in the right direction.

Off field, a huge thanks to all who bought & sold tickets for the beer raffle, won by none other than Bretty Bonza Fothergill and his sidekick Gezza Liddell. Well done boys- enjoy!
