Your Guide to the Top Wisconsin Golf Courses

Uncle Henry’s Backyard at e Club at Lac La Belle Opens To e Public is Spring

PUBLISHERS’ WELCOME

Wisconsin may be known for The Packers, cheese curds, and bratwursts, but it’s public golf that has really taken center stage. In Golf Digest’s 2025-2026 America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, Wisconsin leads the nation with 11 ranked courses, more than any other state. And six of them land in the Top 25 which include:

• Whistling Straits (Straits Course) #4 – A Ryder Cup host that plays like an Irish links and looks like a postcard, it’s as tough as it is iconic.

• Erin Hills #10 – A walking-only major venue with big-sky views and championship pedigree - it hosted the U.S. Open and hasn’t looked back.

• The Lido at Sand Valley #12 – A bold recreation of a lost C.B. Macdonald design - pure golf architecture brought back to life on the Wisconsin sand.

• Blackwolf Run (The River Course) #17 –Pete Dye at his most creative - winding rivers, tight corridors, and major-caliber shot-making required.

Add in Sand Valley (#21), Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley (#25), SentryWorld (#49), Sedge Valley at Sand Valley (#51), Irish Course at Whistling Straits (#65), Lawsonia Links (#66), Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run (#92) and you’ve got a state packed with public-access greatness.

Plus, there has been a huge influx of nontraditional courses to hit Wisconsin including The Baths of Blackwolf Run, The Commons and The Sandbox at Sand Valley, plus the Wee Nip at Grand Geneva and 12North at Trappers Turn, just to name a few.

This Wisconsin Golf Trail Guide is your playbook. Use it to hit the headline courses, uncover the hidden gems, and plan the kind of trip you’ll be talking about for years. Wisconsin has the courses, now it’s your move.

MAMMOTH DUNES

SEDGE

Sand Valley was founded on the dream of bringing incredible, public golf to the prehistoric sand dunes of central Wisconsin. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw began designing the routing in 2014 and opened Sand Valley, the resort’s first course, in 2017. They gave us massive and exposed sand dunes, firm and fast fairways, and a multitude of strategic playing options.

David McLay Kidd gave his meandering layout enormous fairways, big accessible greens, and visually-unique hillsides of exposed sand “mammoth dunes” that became the course moniker. At Mammoth Dunes, Kidd will take you on a journey around a majestic landscape, and along the way, his design skews toward helping, which increases thrill and enjoyment.

The Lido – C.B. Macdonald’s long-lost gem – recently restored at Sand Valley by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf, opened to its members and guests in 2023. It was considered by golf historians as one of the greatest golf courses ever created before being destroyed in 1942. Today, golfers can participate in the Lido’s resurrection and will be captivated by its demand for strategy and bold design.

Sedge Valley, designed by Tom Doak and inspired by the great heathland and links courses of London and the English coast, brings back a more intimate scale and classically styled holes. Golfers will encounter the timeless strategies and elements of courses that Doak believes have best withstood the endless advances of the game.
