Peter Alliss.“There is a small band of golf professionals who have the consummate ability being able to demonstrate a variety of trick shots with great skill and aplomb,” said Peter. “During my life in the world of golf I’ve seen most of them and David Edwards ranks alongside the very best.” For further information: Tel: 01724 733213 / 07887 545114 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Website: www.david-edwards.co.uk

Advanced planning and little bit of foresight will allow you to get the most from your corporate or society golf day when it finally arrives.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BOOKING YOUR GOLF DAY
HE FIRST QUESTION: Do you want to play one or two rounds? What type of competition (singles, Stableford, greensomes, four ball better ball or foursomes)? Most clubs these days will restrict societies to these formats and you’ll find it difficult to arrange medal rounds. If you favour two rounds, most golfers prefer to avoid a full three-course midday meal, so to ensure the right conditions, choose golf clubs that are able and willing to provide, say, a ploughman’s lunch followed by an evening meal. Due to business commitments, some people may find it difficult to attend for a whole day, so if you adopt this suggestion, you’ll increase your potential afternoon attendance, and can round off the day with a prize giving after the evening meal. The golfing ability of your membership is another point you must take into account. If you have a high percentage of high handicap players, they won’t want PAGE 15 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
you to select a difficult course. Your objective should always be to offer the prospect of a good, challenging course that is within their capabilities, rather than inadvertently inflicting a demoralising experience upon the unsuspecting. And then, there’s the cost. While we all like to play the Wentworths, Sunningdales and the like, if you do your homework you’ll find plenty of
superb courses in this guide which will provide your society with all the facilities you require. A good day’s golf enjoyed by all at a reasonable price is your guarantee of success. YOU’RE HALFWAY THERE. Next decision – the attention to detail. Right, now let’s assume you’ve received confirmation of your booking from the selected club.
You’ve been allocated reserved teeoff times, and chosen the menu. Most clubs will also send you a map showing their location, together with the club rules, which should, of course, be respected and observed by all participants. Approximately three to seven days prior to your visit, the steward or secretary will want to know your exact numbers for catering purposes, so it’s advisable for you to post a written notice of your meeting to all members at least three weeks ahead. The more detailed information you can put in your notice, the better, e.g. meeting time, reserved tee-off times, format, catering arrangements, prizes, club rules and etiquette, map, and cost of the day. It’s a good idea to have a simple reply form enclosed with your notice, which will enable your members to respond quickly, and to indicate if they intend to bring a
guest. Come the big day – your having arrived at the clubhouse at 8.30am – if you’re not careful you’ll suddenly be besieged by eager golfers, asking who their playing partners are and in what order they should tee off. The easy and simple solution is to prepare a list of order of play the night before the meeting. Mind you, even that’s not foolproof, because inevitably someone is bound to be late or have some last-minute problem that prevents him or her from turning up on time. One way to deal with this situation is to ask one of the committee members – who is prepared to tee off late – to rearrange the starters’ list according to those already present. Last, but by no means least, don’t forget to appoint a match official – preferably someone who has teed off early. You’ll
need him or her to collect all the cards for the morning and afternoon rounds, and to sort out the results. People who quite voluntarily accept the responsibility of organising society days deserve tremendous admiration. It requires a great deal of hard work, and this guide will enable you to pick the right venue for your society or company day. Happy golfing! THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE | PAGE 16

LALEHAM GOLF CLUB Surrey’s hidden gem is nestled on a picturesque and historic bank of the River Thames between Laleham and Chertsey. Laleham Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole parkland course that stands on 100 acres of meadowland only 15 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Jack White, Open Champion in 1904, designed the course, and at just under 6,300 yards it provides a fair but testing challenge to golfers of all standards. With five par 3s and three par 5s, the flat terrain ensures that a round – or even two – can be enjoyed with reasonable ease. The par-70 course is filled with challenging holes, by way of narrow fairways and tight shots into the undulating greens. Noted for its outstanding year-round condition, Laleham is also known locally for its excellent drainage, and for always being open when other courses close due to the weather conditions. The course is over 100 years old and many holes place a premium on the accuracy of your tee shot. While it is not a forest course, there are plenty of fully mature trees to enclose certain holes. To spice it up further, the bunkers tend to be deep and pot hole styled and wouldn’t look out of place on a links. Laleham Golf Club is proud of its reputation as a friendly and welcoming club placing great emphasis on societies feeling at home from the moment they arrive.

from the A3, Merrist Wood is a private members club that welcomes visitors and groups on weekdays and weekends. The club has successfully entertained a range of societies, charities and corporate golfing events over the years, and was chosen as the host venue to launch the Senior Professional Golf Tour in the UK and recently staged the Surrey Club Foursomes Championship. Designed by David Williams, the 7,000-yard course is laid out over nearly 250 acres, so that even on a busy day it can feel like you are out on your own. The course is one of the longest in Surrey when played from the championship tees, but there are forward tees on all holes, with the white tees at 6,600 and the yellows at 6,300, ensuring it presents a suitable challenge for any player. Water comes into play on five holes, while strategically-placed bunkers can catch wayward shots, so there is a premium on accuracy. The playing conditions are excellent all year round, and the USGA-standard greens ensure temporary putting surfaces are never used. With superb academy facilities, and a welcoming and contemporary clubhouse, the team at Merrist Wood offers an exceptionally high standard of service and will work with you to make your golf day a complete success. MILFORD GOLF CLUB Handily located within a 15 minute drive of the Surrey and Hants towns of Guildford, Farnham and Aldershot, Milford offers a flexible approach to society golf day packages, allowing groups to choose the precise content of their day to match their requirements and budgets. Boasting an 18-hole, par 69 parkland course designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark, Milford offers plenty of varied and interesting holes and provides a challenge for players of all abilities. Measuring 5,890 yards from the white tees, the course is not long, with only one par five, but the five par threes and a group of longer par fours place an emphasis on accurate iron play, thanks to some well positioned bunkers and tricky approaches. The 107-yard 17th is a particular delight, offering a watery grave to any ball hit short or long, with a lake bordering the front of the putting surface and a stream at the back. With USGA standard greens ensuring excellent year-round putting surfaces, Milford is an easy walking course set in naturally beautiful surroundings. NORTH DOWNS GOLF CLUB Probably the highest golf course in the south of England, North Downs is located on top of the hill just past the village of Woldingham. It was founded in 1899 and extended to 18 holes in 1971. At 5,815 yards off the back tees, it might not be the longest course you’ll ever play, but don’t underestimate the challenge of getting around without too many blemishes on your scorecard. The result is a course where accuracy, particularly on the par 4s, is a prerequisite to good scoring. With magnificent views from 850 feet up in the folds of the North Downs, the terrain is pretty gentle, although one climb is required. Fortunately, it’s on the 17th, when golfers’ thoughts are already turning to a drink and a bite to eat at the 19th. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and the course is always in good condition, even during the depths of winter, when only a blanket of snowhas been known to close it down. The club has a reputation for friendliness, which is extended to societies, who can choose from a variety of packages at competitive rates. Full catering is available in the dining room adds to the pleasure of visiting one of Surrey’s hidden gems.

OAK PARK GOLF CLUB & GYM Located in the village of Crondall, and easily accessible from the A3, M3 and A31, Oak Park offers 27 holes of golf, a driving range, bar and restaurant, pro shop and gym. The club has two courses to enjoy, the 18-hole Woodland and the 9-hole Village. The former is tree-lined from start to finish and provides some stunning views over the Hampshire countryside, while the latter offers a gentler stroll around the edge of the pretty village of Crondall. The Woodland measures 6065 yards off the white tees, maybe short by modern standards, but not without its challenges. Many holes require an accurate tee shot and a precise approach to some testing greens. Surely, a very pleasant alternative to the flat, easy, spray-it-from-fairway-to-fairway golf courses. The 9 hole, par 36, 3218 yard Village course is a flatter layout with a beguiling mix of holes that make it quite probably the best 9 hole course in the area! It is extremely popular with time-pressed golfers, “9 holes, Pie and a Pint”, but is also ideal for golfing societies wishing to have a full day at Oak Park and play 27 different holes.

DIBDEN GOLF CENTRE Situated on the eastern edge of the New Forest, Dibden Golf Centre overlooks Southampton Water and presents golfers with stunning coastal views. Opened 42 years ago, Dibden offers 27 holes of golf that will appeal with a wide range of abilities. Since April 2012, the centre has been under the management of MyTime Active, an experienced golf course operator which manages 18 pay-and-play venues throughout the country. The mature 5,935-yard 18-hole course is a delight to play, with generous fairways offering the opportunity for good scoring. Key holes include the par-5 third, which is reachable in two if you’re brave enough to go for it over the water, while the par-4 12th hole offers stunning sea views from the elevated tee, and at 307 yards is driveable with a following wind. The course is undulating without being too hilly, although buggies can be hired from the pro shop if required. The par 29 nine-hole layout, which measures 1,520 yards, was added in 1991. Among the highlights is the signature 6th, which is particularly challenging, with trees protecting inaccurate approaches to the green. HARTLEY WINTNEY GOLF CLUB Hartley Wintney is a friendly members club situated in the beautiful North East Hampshire countryside, easily reached from the M3 and M4, and close to the borders of Berkshire and Surrey. The club has been providing enjoyable golf for over 100 years and is the ideal location for a relaxing game in tranquil surroundings. Hartley Wintney offers an 18-hole, par 71 course that is part-parkland, partwoodland, with many mature trees and water hazards. Extended from nine holes to 18 in 2000, the course measures 6,240 yards from the white tees, with the layout carefully designed to provide a challenge for all standards. The back nine is 500 yards longer than the front, so it’s best to get your score in early. The challenge ramps up on the closing stretch, with the 13th and the 16th being particularly strong tests. The former is the stroke index one, a 424yard par four, which invites a tee shot up the left side towards a lake in order to have a pop at the shallow green, while the latter is a classic three-shot par five that requires precise yardage management to avoid two ditches that run at right angles to the fairway. The modern and comfortable clubhouse overlooking the 18th caters for groups small or large throughout the week. We are keen to provide your exact requirements. SANDFORD SPRINGS GOLF CLUB Its three loops of nine holes give Sandford Springs Golf Club a unique feel. The charming club, nestled in the north Hampshire countryside, emanates an air of quiet contentment, and yet such a calm façade belies a passionate heartbeat that exists beneath. There is a real sense of character about the place, from the moment you first set eyes on the pretty white clubhouse with its ornate ironwork and neat touches. Even the 27 holes – set out as three distinct loops of nine in the form of the aptlynamed Wood, Park and Lakes courses – are serene and meander through the rolling countryside overlooking Watership Down. But don’t be fooled by appearances. The three courses can prove a challenge for all levels of golfer, while the staff and the club have achieved their aim of being recognised as one of the finest golf venues in the region. The Waterloo Course is a picturesque par 69 layout measuring just under than ditches and tree-lined fairways in plentiful supply. The signature hole is the 10th, a magnificent par four with trees lining both sides of the fairway from tee to green, and out of bounds coming into play on the left. The Wellington Course is the longer of the two layouts, measuring 6,400 yards and with a par of 72. Consequently this offers a different challenge to the Waterloo, giving more of an opportunity to open the shoulders, especially at the four lengthy par fives – the 5th, 7th, 11th and 15th – which weigh in at 565, 501, 542 and 561 yards respectively. Both courses are set up for an enjoyable experience for the casual golfer, while still providing a challenge for the more accomplished player. A private function room can be made available for meals and prize presentations.

SLINFOLD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Slinfold Golf & Country Club lies just west of the historic village of Horsham in beautiful Sussex parkland. Designed and opened in 1992, the Club has recently undergone a £4m clubhouse development, making it one of the most popular Membership and Golf Day destinations in the area. The Club has played host to the Southern Professional Championship on two separate occasions, whilst also having the privilege of hosting a number of County matches. The course itself is set amongst mature oak trees and strategically placed water hazards, and is the ideal society venue at just under 6,500 yards, with four Par 3s and four Par 5s. The 16th hole requires a testing iron shot over water, whilst the signature 10th hole requires a knee-knocking drive from the island tee in front of the clubhouse! The greens are built to ‘sand based USGA spec’, and so along with the tees are designed for all round use, whilst there is a driving range, a putting green and a ‘warm up area’ to help get you started on your golf day. Clubhouse improvements boast a new state-of-the-art Gym, Swimming Pool, Jacuzzi Spa and Steam Room which visitors are welcome to use. SOUTHAMPTON CITY GOLF COURSE Southampton City Golf Course recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, two years ago and is re-establishing its reputation as one of the top pay-and-play facilities in the south of England. Designed by the five-time Open Champion J.H Taylor, the course is set in acres of mature parkland. Despite being over 75 years old, the course still offers a great test of golf to players of all abilities, with an interesting range of holes, each with tree-lined fairways and many with large, challenging greens. In fact, despite hosting the Southampton Open each year, which attracts a number of the best golfers from the region, the course record has stood for over 20 years. Having recently been taken over by new management in the form of Mytime Active, the course is also benefitting from new investment which has helped to improve the overall and, in particular, winter playability. The golf course has also introduced a dress code on the 18-hole course, which we hope will help us to combine the best elements of friendly unpretentious pay-and-play golf with the ethos of fair play and good etiquette that you come to expect from private clubs.

left-hand dogleg, which requires a long and accurate drive to leave a short shot into a well-protected green. The 425-yard sixth also rewards accuracy off the tee, followed by a well-struck approach into the narrow mouth of a long green. Elsewhere, visitors will find forgiving, wide fairways and inviting putting surfaces. Of the five short holes, the 10th and 17th place a particular premium on accuracy, and it is no coincidence that most societies choose the par-four 18th for their long drive competition – the elevated tee and generous fairway demands that players pull out the driver and attempt to launch the ball at the flag some 380 yards into the distance. The course is kept in magnificent condition throughout the year by the dedicated team of greenkeepers, and the setting could barely be more idyllic, with fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area to enjoy. The combination of mature woodland, undulating parkland, and lakes provides an array of challenges, enhanced by stunning views over the Lea Valley making it one of the finest golf courses in Hertfordshire. BLUE MOUNTAIN GOLF CENTRE Nestling in 200 acres of beautiful Berkshire countryside, Blue Mountain Golf and Conference Centre is the ideal venue for a society or corporate golf day. The challenging and undulating 18-hole parkland course is not long by any standards, being just over 6,000 yards, but don’t be fooled by the yardage book, or the gentle opening par four, with its wide fairway and large green. Things start to get a whole lot tougher at the fourth, a 223-yard par three where a pond protects the left-hand approach, while the 15th, a 473-yard par four, will be hard to reach in regulation for even the big hitters. The closing stretch is no less demanding, with the par-three 16th also asking for a well struck shot over water to find the putting surface. The course is always maintained to a high standard; the greens are smooth and evenly-paced, the fairways well defined, and the bunkers kept in good shape. With a 33-bay floodlit driving range, visitors can warming up before play, while a fleet of buggies is available for those who prefer not to walk. For corporate days and events, the centre offers seven fully air-conditioned conference and banqueting suites for up to 650 delegates, or 400 dining guests, while smaller group and societies are equally well catered for. Each room offers stunning views of the golf course surrounded by beautiful lakes and landscaped gardens, making it a perfect location for corporate dinners and seasonal balls. ST MELLION GOLF RESORT The Resort boasts a stunning AA 4* 80-bedroom hotel, Health Club & Spa, and a variety of dining experiences from the simple to the elegant in our award winning Restaurants. For golfers, St Mellion is renowned as one of the finest golf venues, being a regular in the Top 100 and having hosted 12 European Tour events. The Nicklaus Signature Course is amongst the finest golf courses anywhere and was the first European course personally designed by Jack Nicklaus, who was quoted saying “I knew it was going to be good, but not this good…It’s everything I hoped for and more”. Even for Nicklaus the course is unique, at 6,300 yards it is not a long course but inspired by Augusta, he created a UK version of Amen Corner. Holes 10 through to 13 are quite brilliant, both to play and to look at. St Mellion also has a “hidden gem”, the Kernow Course. Opened in 2010, it was a favourite with golfers straight away and a perfect compliment to the Nicklaus Course, offering wide fairways, big greens and as Today’s Golfer reviewed in 2012 “an outstanding course with a great blend of holes.” For the golfer St Mellion should be on everyone’s “Bucket List”.

Established back in 1974, when the original nine holes were opened, the club now boasts a 18-hole complex. The well-maintained and challenging par-71, 6,402-yard Channels course is a lightly-bunkered, undulating layout, which starts out on flat meadowlands for the first four holes, before moving onto the challenge of holes built over an award-winning quarry restoration project, where water provides a stern defence. Few holes typify the ‘Channels challenge’ more than the 17th, which has water between tee and green. The excellent facilities are further enhanced by the 14th century farmhouse, which is home to the relaxing clubhouse, and houses two meeting rooms and the renowned brasserie restaurant. picturesque setting in rural Essex, boasts two excellent 18-hole courses – the Abbotts and the Priors – and the newly-opened 9-hole Monastery Course, taking the golf offering to 45 holes. The jewel in the club’s crown is the par 72, 6,501-yard Abbotts Course, which was designed to exacting USGA specifications by locally-based course architect Howard Swann. He has used of all use talents to create a championship layout that will test every facet of your game. The course features 11 separate water hazards, which place on emphasis on smart course management, while there are plenty of risk/reward holes for the big hitters. The Priors Course is a par 70, 5,871-yard, 18-hole parkland course that offers an alternative set of challenges, sculpted with manicured fairways and generous greens. ECCLESTON PARK GOLF CLUB Situated on the outskirts of Rainhill, less than two miles from Junction 7 of the M62, Eccleston Park’s convenient location within the north west’s motorway network means it is within easy reach of Liverpool, St Helens, Warrington and beyond. While not exceptionally long – it plays to 6,477 yards off the back tees – the course is far from easy, with water coming into play on several holes, so position off the tee is often more important than distance. The first, a 420-yard dog-leg par four, is a prime example of the examination on offer, with a pond in play on the corner of the dogleg, and a mid/long iron to a two-tiered green. The 190-yard eighth is a great short hole, with a stream snaking from the tee and widening out to a pond as it approaches the green, which causes a few nerves off the tee. Among the best holes on the back nine is the 560-yard par-five 14th, which features a large lake that must be carried by your approach to the green. Even long hitters will struggle to reach in two, so a lay up is often the best route to secure a birdie. The 18th century clubhouse offers the ideal place to sit back and unwind in comfort while watching others tackle the 18th. A number of different catering options are available for both before and after your round, including the ever-popular chef’s specials. Whichever option you choose, you are sure to be made to feel at home.

SHARPLEY GOLF COURSE “Whatever your ability and whatever the weather this golf layout will enthral you.” Most Reviewed
THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE | PAGE 144
et in beautiful rolling Durham countryside and boasting panoramic sea views, Sharpley’s par-71 course is an absolute pleasure to play, with its challenging and undulating layout featuring many unusual hazards and a stunning mix of holes that are sure to excite and challenge players of all abilities.
The 5,902-yard course, only opened in 2010, already shows maturity far beyond its years, with the architects and greenkeeping staff creating a course that feels and plays like an established layout. This is in part due to the natural topography of the course, along with the care and attention taken when shaping the fairways and contoured USGA greens. Each hole offers a unique experience with water features often coming into play. The par threes are particularly interesting, with the fifth being a fine example, offering a shot from an elevated tee to a sloping green, with lateral water just over the back and two bunkers waiting short of the green. The course’s signature hole is arguably the 8th, a tricky par-four with a fairway that slopes left towards a lake. Keep the ball right and you’ll be in good shape, hit it left, and you’ve got water and trees obstructing your line to the two-tier green. A state-of-the-art drainage network ensures the course remains not only open for play in all weathers, but creates superb year-round playing surfaces, with the greens being fast and true and the fairways in great condition. After golf, guests can relax in the comfortable log cabin-style clubhouse, which has balconies overlooking 18th and 9th greens, and offers a wide range of drinks, light snacks and hot food. The club welcomes visiting golfers, golf societies and corporate golf days, and a team of dedicated staff is happy to create a bespoke golf day – whatever the size and experience of your group – that will be both enjoyable and memorable.
