GOLF GAMEBOOK:

TAKING THE STRAIN OUT OF TOURNAMENT MANAGEMENT

Anyone who has ever been tasked with organising a golf event of any kind, be it half-adozen friends going away on a golf holiday to Spain, to hosting over a hundred guests for a big Pro-Am event at your club, will know what an onerous and time-consuming job it can be.

From sending out invitations to managing the responses, logging handicaps, organising tee times and setting up nearest-the-pin competitions, monitoring scores and publishing leaderboards, organising a golf event takes a tremendous amount of time and e ort.

Remove the stress of running society events and corporate golf days with Golf GameBook Tournament Pro – the one-stop digital shop for administering and hosting golf days of all shapes and sizes Pro.

But what if there was a place – or more speci cally – an online platform, that could do a big chunk of the legwork for you, leaving you to focus on the numerous other tasks required for such a day, such as liaising with the caterers and sourcing prizes? Thankfully there is, and it’s called Golf GameBook Tournament Pro.

Golf GameBook is a free to download smartphone app that performs, in parts, the roles of a scorecard, GPS unit, stats tracker, real-time leaderboard, and every kind of social media platform you can think of – all in the same place. Already used by a million golfers worldwide, it’s your virtual clubhouse rolled into one handy package. And sitting alongside the smartphone app is Tournament Pro, Golf GameBook’s online platform that enables event hosts, including society and corporate golf day organisers, to handle almost every aspect of tournament management.

Already regularly used by over 300 golf event organisers throughout Europe, Tournament Pro o ers a new and innovative way to manage golf events. accessed all on the one handy platform.

And, come the day, the free downloadable Golf GameBook app enables golfers to log their scores, both individually and in teams, in real time, instantly creating live leaderboards which all can see, giving your golf day a tour-event feel, and ramping up the tension and excitement as the hole-byhole scores come in. Golf GameBook’s online interface can even send out live scores to friends and colleagues who aren’t playing that day – further raising the stakes.

With gross strokeplay scores and team Stableford points automatically adjusted for

handicaps and applied to whatever format is being played on the day (best two scores from four, individual, combined totals, Texas Scramble etc) Tournament Pro can be used to monitor single rounds over one day, or multiple rounds over several days. And once the tournament is over golfers can share scores, upload photos or videos they may have taken during the day, and then celebrate successes and commiserate their glorious failures.

For golfers playing a new course, Golf GameBook app also serves as a GPS unit, enabling users to click on a course and get full-hole overviews and precise yardages to targets and pins wherever they are playing in the world. Click a map and a GPS hole guide lls the screen, allowing the golfer to plot the best way around the course and, hopefully, get among those allimportant prizes.

THE ADDINGTON GOLF CLUB

Currently ranked at 36 in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses England, The Addington is the flagship course in The Altonwood Group’s portfolio.

With a rich and interesting history, The Addington was designed by JF Abercromby in 1913 and first opened for play in 1919, soon becoming a favourite of the rich and famous. Reaching its heyday in the 1930s, it was written about by many famous writers of the time and played host to film stars, golfing legends and even royalty – King George VI became Patron in 1937!

Today, having commenced a 5 year restoration programme resulting in the rebuilding of bunkers, a new irrigation system and

a woodland management programme to expose some of the magnificent pine trees that are a feature of the course, The Addington presents a golfing experience you will not forget.

A par 69, 6,300 yard course, a ording expansive views of the metropolis from hilltop tees like those at the 14th and 16th, of the looming mast of Crystal Palace and the backdrop provided by the NatWest Tower, Canary Wharf, Wembley Arch and the Shard, just 12 or so miles away.

Having retained its heath land beauty and restored wooden bridges which are a feature throughout, The Addington invites you to walk a course virtually unchanged since its creation.

SURREY NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

ROOK LANE | CHALDON | SURREY | CR3 5AA

Covering in excess of 200 acres, Surrey National is a Championship course approaching 7,000 yards from the Championship tees and 6,300 from the daily play tees.

Designed by leading golf course architect, David Williams, the course meanders through dramatic rolling countryside, populated by thousands of mature trees which further enhance the appeal of the setting.

Carefully positioned bunkers, raised tees, tree lined fairways and two teasingly placed lakes, mean a good test for golfers of all abilities. Although the contours of the site are dramatic, the clever use of these natural assets ensures that the vast majority of the holes are played either level or downhill, with only one real uphill shot – that being a short pitch to the raised green on the 2nd.

As befits a championship length status, the course has a number of difficult par 4s – the 16th and bunker less 6th being the most difficult – but the most challenging hole is the 3rd, which requires a carry of over 150 yards across water from the championship tee.

Surrey National welcomes visitors, corporate days and societies to play its course and enjoy hospitality in its magnificent clubhouse with weekend morning tee times available – the perfect place to relax after a hard round of golf and to enjoy first class catering, free Wi-Fi and excellent service in either our spike bar or Fountain Suite, which both provide spectacular views across the lake, fountains and course beyond.

WOLDINGHAM GOLF CLUB

HALLILOO VALLEY ROAD | WOLDINGHAM | SURREY | CR3 7HA

Nestled in the serenity of the Halliloo Valley in the heart of the Surrey North Downs, Woldingham’s excellent course and facilities have become a popular destination for golfers.

The unusual double 9th and 18th greens play out in front of the clubhouse and make for interesting gallery viewing!

A par 71 course in excess of 6,000 yards long from the yellow tees, the course has a number of tricky par 3’s in particular the 2nd which offers an elevated shot to a green

surrounded by strategically placed bunkers. Built on a chalk base with USGA specification greens, Woldingham offers year round play.

CANTERBURY GOLF CLUB

SCOTLAND HILLS | LITTLEBOURNE ROAD | CANTERBURY | KENT | CT1 1TW

Canterbury has long been regarded as among the bestdesigned inland courses in Kent.

Created by the legendary Harry Colt in 1927 – a year after he completed construction of the West Course at Wentworth –the 6,272-yard layout takes golfers on an enchanting journey through mature woodland. Following the natural contours of the land as it descends and rises, crosses and often re-crosses a number of brooks and dykes that help to ensure that conditions will invariably be at their best.

Variety is a key feature as no two holes are even faintly alike. From a number of elevated tees, the course provides excellent views across the surrounding countryside while an

abundance of birdlife and wild flora simply adds to the beauty of the experience.

Acclaimed as a warm and welcoming club, Canterbury’s reputation is further enhanced by the hospitality that visitors receive from our friendly and helpful clubhouse staff.

We boast a range of quality local beers, a barista for coffee connoisseurs and a comprehensive menu of bar snacks or for more substantial meals.

Our well-stocked professional shop can supply everything a player may need, including buggy or trolley hire, on their way to the first tee.

An exclusive experience.

ENFIELD GOLF CLUB

ENFIELD | MIDDLESEX | EN2 7DA

Situated just inside the M25, Enfield is a picturesque parkland course within easy reach of all parts of North London, Hertfordshire and Essex. We are located just 10 minutes drive away from Junction 24.

Designed by former Open Champion, James Braid, the course measures 6174 yards and its fairways are flanked by trees all around. Salmons Brook winds its way through the heart of the course and the moat, an ancient English Heritage site, is located at the back of the 17th Green.

As such, the 17th is one of the course’s best holes. A par 4 just shy of 350 yards, the drive should favour the left side of the fairway, while a mid or short iron with the second shot should safely find the green. But, remember, club selection is vital to avoid your ball being swallowed by the moat!

VERULAM GOLF CLUB

Our challenging par 72 course was designed by James Braid in 1905 so we are now well into our second century as a thriving members’ club situated in the heart of historic St Albans, known as Verulamium in Roman times.

Verulam is an established parkland course that has matured over the years to provide a stern test of all aspects of the game. At all holes the tee shot sets a premium on accuracy and shot control leading to the approach to the greens that are well protected by bunkers, slopes and mounds. Once on the green there are subtle undulations that are true and fast. Out of bounds is a danger at many holes and there are tree plantations, water and the River Ver to be negotiated. and interesting test of golf offering a tough challenge even to the experienced golfer as evidenced in the Amateur and Professional course records of 67 and 66 respectively.

At 6,429 yards from the Medal tees the course is not long. The course has a good drainage record with very few hole and course closures in the winter and in summer the ball really does run on the fast well-manicured fairways. The best scores result from being straight and having a good short game rather than long hitting that doesn’t follow the fairway. Recent drainage works on greens have improved the course even further, coupled with an extensive bunker project including a dedicate bunker irrigation system.

Nestling at the south eastern edge of Broadlands Estate, the course meanders through the trees, with its own version of Amen Corner on the front nine, three holes that will provide a challenge for any

golfer. For although the course is less than 6000 yards, the narrow wooded fairways, doglegs and strategically placed bunkers make it an examination of accuracy rather than lengths and deep bunkers.

WATERLOOVILLE GOLF CLUB

CHERRY TREE AVE | COWPLAIN | WATERLOOVILLE | PO8 8AP

Recognised in 2016 as a Championship venue by England Golf, the course at Waterlooville Golf Club is one that is great for all abilities. The course is a picturesque parkland course measuring up to 6,550 yards and with five par 5’s, five par 3’s and eight par 4’s our course is a truly unique and interesting experience.

The Club has recently invested significantly in the course with a new irrigation system, additional drainage works and all bunkers being fully renovated, along with a host of new machinery added to the greenkeeping fleet. As a result the course is in superb condition with fantastic greens all year round that have developed a strong reputation. There is also a practice ground and short game practice area available for those who

like to fine tune their skills before playing.

Our signature hole is the 13th – at 566 yards you have to carry a pond with your drive, a ditch with your second and the third shot requires an accurate approach to a tight green.

Waterlooville Golf Club warmly welcomes golf societies and corporate groups. Although our minimum number to qualify for our special Society rates is 12, we can comfortably accommodate much larger groups of up to 130 making Waterlooville GC the perfect venue for your next society, corporate or charity event.

You will be met upon arrival by one of our friendly staff before enjoying a round on our championship course and the sumptuous food served in our bar and restaurant.

SLINFOLD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

STANE STREET | SLINFOLD | WEST SUSSEX | RH13 0RE

Slinfold Golf & Country Club lies just west of Horsham, in beautiful Sussex parkland. Designed and opened in 1992, the club is one of the most popular membership and golf day destinations in the area.

The 18-hole course is set among mature oak trees and strategically-placed water hazards, and is the ideal society venue at just under 6,500 yards, with four par 3s and four par 5s. Measuring 6,424 yards from the white tees, the course puts an emphasis on accurate shot placement over big hitting, with well-positioned bunkers and natural hollows needing to be negotiated to shoot a good score.

Among the standout holes are the par-three 16th, a 163-yard hole that requires a testing iron shot over water, while the signature par-four 10th demands a challenging drive from an island tee in front of the clubhouse.

The greens and tees are built to USGA specifications, ensuring excellent year-round playing conditions, while the naturally forgiving topography makes it an easy walk. The layout is designed in two loops, allowing for a shorter game experience if time is limited. A new 9-hole short course provides an extra option for 27-hole golf days.

The spacious clubhouse boasts a gym, swimming pool, Jacuzzi spa and steam room.

BROADSTONE GOLF CLUB

WENTWORTH DR | BROADSTONE | DORSET | BH18 8DQ

Broadstone Golf Club is the must visit golf course in Dorset, providing a fabulous golfing day out.

The course is Broadstone’s real star, regularly featuring in the list of 100 golf courses in GB&I. With fairways that run freely through 250 acres of unspoilt heathland, stunning views across the Dorset countryside and playing surfaces in excellent condition, it takes some beating in terms of a golfing experience.

One of Harry Colt’s finest works, the course features many iconic holes, providing a stern but fair test. Highlights include the stunning par 3 6th hole, less than 170 yards but still a classic Colt par 3. The 7th is a rolling par 4 with two carries over heather where a five is generally considered a great score, let

alone a four! A fabulous run of holes on the back nine features another beautifully tough par 4, the 13th hole, where the 2nd shot into the green provides a summary of Broadstone’s test –tough, but fair and lots of fun, with great views everywhere, this time the scenic 14th hole. A golf course that never disappoints and lives long in the memory.

Located on the outskirts of Bournemouth, Broadstone also offers a superb selection of services off the course with excellent in-house bar and catering facilities, the famous halfway house and a state-of-the-art swing studio.

ORCHARDLEIGH GOLF CLUB

ORCHARDLEIGH ESTATE | FROME | SOMERSET | BA11 2PH

The country estate of Orchardleigh – which includes a Victorian mansion, an island church, boathouse and a number of other listed outbuildings – is the setting for an idyllic parkland course routed through mature trees.

Designed in the mid-1990s by Brian Huggett, in conjunction with Peter McEvoy, the championship layout offers a decent test on a site where water is in play on seven holes.

The front nine is laid out on flatter land to the west of the clubhouse and the 414yard sixth is certainly the most challenging on the way out, with out of bounds to the left of a fairway that leads to a two tiered green.

The back nine is more undulating and the dogleg right 14th is a testing par 5 with well-placed bunkers and trees. The maturity of the setting contrasts well against the modern, target golf design of the holes where greens have been constructed to USGA standard, while Orchardleigh’s practice facilities are firstclass with a full-length covered range, bunkers and chipping and putting greens.

ABERDOVEY GOLF CLUB

Aberdovey is proud to boast a championship links golf course which is consistently rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK & Ireland.

Founded in 1892, three of the legendary golf architects of the early 20th century, Harry Colt, James Braid and Herbert Fowler, have all had a hand in shaping Aberdovey as it stands today – a traditional, out and back links course, set in a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Tight lies, undulating approaches, firm surfaces and fast greens are all found at Aberdovey. At 6,535 yards, the course is not long by the standard of many newer courses. However, the real defences lie in the ever-changing winds which ensure that conditions are never the same for long, creating a test that often requires the player to use every club in the bag.

Aberdovey Golf Club has played host to many national and international competitions in its time. The Welsh Seniors’ Championship has made Aberdovey its usual home and the Welsh Hickory Championships are also held here annually. It is testament to the fact that Aberdovey truly is a fine test of links golf.

The Club is well known for its friendliness and were voted winners of the “Best Golf Club” award at the recent Welsh Hospitality Awards.

It was Bernard Darwin, former Walker Cup player and the first literary giant of the game who returned regularly, writing “Aberdovey is the course that my soul loves best of all the courses in the world” – play Aberdovey yourself and we’re sure you’ll see why.

MACHYNYS PENINSULA GOLF CLUB

NICKLAUS AVENUE | MACHYNYS | LLANELLI | CARMARTHENSHIRE | SA15 2DG

Ever since it opened in 2005, Machynys Peninsula has captured the imagination of the golfing public. Its superb Nicklaus Design championship course overlooks the stunning Carmarthen Bay, making it a truly spectacular setting in which to enjoy a round.

Machynys recently hosted the Senior Open Qualifier along with the Men’s & Ladies Home Internationals in 2023. It’s played host to numerous top-flight professional events over the past 13 years. Tommy Fleetwood has said: “This is arguably the best man-made links in the world’.

Playing to 7,121 yards off the back tees – with multiple teeing options to suit all skill levels – it features no fewer than 25 acres of lakes, with water coming into play on two-thirds of the holes.

Straight driving is essential to avoid these hazards, while accurate approach shots are needed to negotiate the clever bunkering around the sizeable USGA-standard greens – which are always presented in superb condition.

The course is routed in two loops, with a parkland front nine and an inward half that has more of a links feel beside the sea. Gary Nicklaus highlighted the 16th as one his favourites, a 461 yard par four which is played across a lake from behind the clubhouse, with the green offering a view of the entire bay.

The stylish, modern clubhouse features a bar and restaurant, function rooms, pro shop and golf superstore, while practise facilities include a putting green and driving range.

THE CARNOUSTIE BURNSIDE COURSE

The Carnoustie Burnside Course oozes character and from the back tees is a splendid test of golf, the 5th and 14th particularly, providing dramatic challenges for those who strive to gain their par 3. Here, in 1953 is where the great Ben Hogan shot 70 to help him qualify for the Open Championship which he subsequently won. Origins of The Burnside Course go back over 100 years. In 1982, 9 holes were laid out as an ‘Auxiliary’ course, to relieve pressure on The Championship Course, allowing visitors a gentler introduction to the pleasures of golf. This was one of the first instances of a club adding a second course – pre-dating the New Course at St Andrews by two years. The course

evolved over time, eventually getting to 18 holes in 1914. The next major change to the course was in 1934, when it was lengthened and strengthened and finally given a proper name – The Burnside. The course, now measuring just over 6,000 yards, is a tidy and challenging venue – very much one of the ‘hidden gems’ that Scottish golf is blessed with. As its name suggests, the course winds over and around the Barry Burn, and is protected not only by that feature, but also by narrow fairways and small greens. The bunkering is minimalist, but all are well placed to influence the golfer’s strategy. This course more than holds its own against some of the better courses in the country.
