The Insider’s Guide to Portugal

Welcome to the Insider’s Guide to Portugal.

I first visited Portugal as a very young boy (complete with cut-down ladies clubs!) with my parents. We would travel to Vilamoura, rent a villa or book a hotel and my father and I would play golf very early each morning. The Club Secretaries would usually allow me to play for free and we would play 18 holes in time for lunch on the clubhouse terrace. My favourite course was The Old Course at Vilamoura and it's still a treat to play.

Since those easy days, golf in Portugal has become a little more accomplished – there are a total of 71 golf courses of which 10 are listed in Europe’s Top 100. Given that about half of Portugal’s border is on the coast, the Portuguese do links golf very well with seven that would grace any golf itinerary: West Cliffs and Praia d’El Rey north of Lisbon, Oitavos on the Lisbon Coast, Troia, Comporta Dunas and Torre south of Lisbon, and Palmares on the Western Algarve. There are countless parkland and manicured gems like Penha Longa, the three Quinta do Lago courses, Vilamoura Old, San Lorenzo and Monte Rei.

But take away these gems and you’ve still got a brilliant golf offering. Greenfees are keen for most of the year (although the courses in/around Vilamoura are getting pricey), it’s easy to get to and the quality of welcome and hotels in Portugal impress me on every visit. You can take your pick between smart golf resorts, boutique hotels, resort-centre convenience or classy city joints.

Above anything else, it is the people that make a holiday special and the Portuguese are perfect hosts – they are professional, have a great eye-for-detail and possess a genuinely warm and unassuming nature. I’ve enjoyed working with them for over three decades. They’re also great fun on the course and in the bar too!

Inside this brochure are my thoughts and experiences of Portugal –detailing the hotels, golf courses and destinations that I like and trust and am confident in recommending to our clients.

All the prices are based on four people in the party, and the example itineraries are designed to show you what works well and how much it will cost. Prices can often be improved thanks to promotions we receive from the resorts

As always , we’re just a phone call away, and happy and ready to offer impartial and expert advice to best fit your holiday wishes.

Please enjoy and do not consume in moderation!

Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, is a vibrant destination that offers a blend of history, culture and charm. Situated along the Douro River, Porto is famed for its breathtaking views, colourful architecture and welcoming atmosphere.

The city’s historic centre, Ribeira, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site characterised by narrow cobblestone streets, brightly painted houses and lively cafés and restaurants. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks like the Clérigos Tower, the São Bento railway station with its azulejo-tile panels, and the imposing Sé Cathedral.

Porto is also synonymous with its namesake wine, Port. Wine enthusiasts can cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, home to numerous wine cellars offering tastings and tours. Beyond its wine heritage, Porto boasts a

dynamic food scene, blending traditional Portuguese dishes with innovative gastronomy. Try a francesinha (a hearty local sandwich), or enjoy fresh seafood with a glass of vinho verde.

For art lovers, the Serralves Museum and its gardens provide a peaceful escape, while the Livraria Lello, often cited as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, is a must-visit.

The city’s riverfront setting also means plenty of opportunities for scenic boat tours or leisurely strolls along the Douro.

Porto offers something for every traveller: from history buffs to foodies to those simply seeking a relaxed European getaway. Plus, there are three fine golf courses to play – all some distance apart and between 30 and 60 minutes from Porto so I view Porto as a “city-break with golf” more than a pure golf holiday. Or have an intensive few days of golf at Praia d’El Rey and then head up to Porto (2 ½ hours drive) to finish with a short citybreak; we can arrange flights into Lisbon and out of Porto to make it as easy as possible.

Porto: The Golf Courses & Hotels

Just a short drive from the city, Oporto Golf Club in Espinho is one of the oldest golf courses in Portugal, dating back to 1890. This traditional links course offers stunning views of the Atlantic. Further south, Estela Golf Club is another standout option. Set along the coastline, the layout combines natural dunes, ocean views and challenging holes influenced by sea breezes.

For those seeking a more modern design, Vidago Palace Golf Course, located about an hour from Porto, is a must play. Set in a stunning parkland surrounding a historic palace (the Vidago Palace Hotel), this course has a clever layout which demands steady, thoughtful play.

The Vila Galé Porto is a well-appointed 4-star hotel situated in the Bonfim district, a short distance from Porto’s historic centre. Its location is ideal for exploring the city’s key attractions, including the Ribeira district, Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello.

Vila Galé Porto offers 292 rooms and suites, designed with contemporary décor. Many rooms offer panoramic views of Porto’s skyline, adding an extra touch to the stay. The hotel features a wellness centre with an indoor pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath, and a gym. Vila Galé Porto has an on-site restaurant, Paris-Texas, which serves a mix of Portuguese and international cuisine in a stylish setting. For a casual drink, the Soul & Blues Bar hits the spot.

The hotel also has a championship 18-hole golf course which is considered one of the most scenic in Portugal.

Praia D’El Rey

The central-west region of Portugal is a golfer's Heaven. Four of the five courses are close to Obidos. Óbidos is one of the country’s most picturesque destinations. Located about an hour north of Lisbon, this walled town is famous for its historic architecture, cobbled streets and whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers. Beyond its cultural and historical appeal, the region surrounding Óbidos has become an increasingly popular destination for golf enthusiasts with two superb golf courses, three good ones and prices to please even the most abstentious of pockets.

The Óbidos region benefits from Portugal’s mild year-round climate, making

it an ideal location for golf. The area enjoys warm summers and mild winters, allowing you to play comfortably in all seasons. The occasional Atlantic breeze adds an extra challenge to the game.

Beyond golf, the Óbidos region offers excellent accommodations, high-quality dining, and cultural experiences. Visitors can explore the medieval castle, taste local Ginjinha (a cherry liqueur) and enjoy fresh seafood in nearby coastal towns. With its mix of history, scenic beauty, and top-of-the-range golf, the area is should be high on your “to do” list.

Praia D’El Rey: The Golf Courses

West Cliffs

West Cliffs is a relatively new addition to Portugal’s golfing scene but has quickly gained acclaim. Designed by Cynthia Dye of the Dye golfing dynasty, this par-72 masterpiece stretches 7,003 yards. The course is set within a protected natural landscape of dunes, rolling hills and cliffs. Its layout incorporates undulating fairways and a wide variety of hazards: it’s links golf on steroids and great fun. One of the very best in Portugal and highly-regarded among the golfing elite.

Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort

Just 15 minutes from Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs, Royal Óbidos was designed by the late great Seve Ballesteros. This par72 course covers 7,100 yards, offering a mix of open and treelined holes with views of the Óbidos Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. The course is characterised by its flowing design, with water hazards and bunkers to test your skills. The finishing holes, particularly the par-5 18th, are designed for a boom or bust end to your round.

Located about 30 minutes south of Óbidos, Campo Real is a parkland-style course set in a valley surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. This par-72 course measures just 6,009 yards and is great example of how a short course can still provide plenty of bite with its narrow fairways, elevated greens and bunkering. The natural contours of the terrain add complexity to every hole, and the surrounding scenery offers a peaceful, picturesque setting for a round of golf.

The course is set within a modern resort development, featuring contemporary architecture and stunning natural surroundings. With wide fairways and undulating greens, Bom Sucesso is a pleasant resort course with beautiful views of the Óbidos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean thrown in for free.

Cascais, Estoril & Lisbon

Cascais and Estoril, located just 30 minutes west of Lisbon and on Portugal’s beautiful coastline, are premier destinations for upscale tourists seeking a blend of luxury, culture and natural beauty. These neighbouring towns are known for their sophisticated ambiance and idyllic surroundings.

Cascais, a fishing village turned royal retreat, offers an elegant mix of historic charm and modern luxury. You can enjoy five-star hotels, gourmet dining and exclusive boutiques. The town is dotted with museums, such as the Paula Rego House of Stories, and historic landmarks like the Cascais Citadel, a former fortress turned luxury hotel and arts hub. Cascais marina is perfect for yachting enthusiasts, while the nearby Guincho Beach, with its golden sands and rolling waves, attracts both sun-seekers and kite surfers.

Estoril, often dubbed the "Portuguese Riviera," is synonymous with glamour and sophistication. Its crown jewel, the Casino Estoril, is Europe’s largest casino, offering a refined entertainment experience with gaming, shows and fine dining. Estoril is also renowned for its championship golf courses, such as the prestigious Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa. Together, Cascais and Estoril provide the perfect balance of leisure, culture and style.

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is a city steeped in history and charm, making it a superb destination for a long weekend or a longer stay where you can play golf by day and explore the myriad of bars, restaurants and shops in the evening. Dining in the family-run inns on the backstreets of the capital is fun and unbelievable value. Lisbon’s rich past, dating back over 2,000 years, is evident in its architecture, neighbourhoods and traditions, while its compact layout allows visitors to explore its highlights in just a few days.

Lisbon’s history is deeply intertwined with maritime exploration. During the Age of Discovery in the 15th- and 16thcenturies, it was the epicentre of global trade and exploration, launching voyages that expanded the world map. Iconic landmarks such as the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries celebrate this era, while the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases the intricate Manueline architecture that flourished during Portugal’s golden age.

Cascais, Estoril & Lisbon: The Golf Courses

After the earthquake of 1755, Lisbon rebuilt itself with resilience, adopting a grid-like design in the Baixa district under the vision of the Marquis of Pombal. Today, this area is a vibrant hub of plazas, shops, and cafes. Its seven hills offer stunning views, best enjoyed from historic tram rides. Lisbon’s charm lies in its mix of historic and modern. Visitors can wander through Alfama, the city’s oldest district, with its narrow streets and soulful fado music, or explore contemporary spaces like the MAAT museum along the waterfront.

There aren’t many cities I would recommend as part of a golf holiday but Lisbon’s accessibility, vibrant neighbourhoods, rich culinary scene and sunny weather make it perfect. Whether admiring historic sites, savouring pastel de nata, or enjoying the lively nightlife in Bairro Alto, Lisbon is calling you.

Par: 69, Yardage: 5,844. One of Portugal’s oldest and most historic courses, Estoril Golf Club has hosted the Portuguese Open several times.

Designed by Mackenzie Ross, the course features narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens, requiring precise shotmaking. It’s short and very sweet. The signature hole is the par-3 16th, a picturesque short hole where and elevation changes add to the challenge. The classic clubhouse offers a relaxing atmosphere with views over the fairways and Sintra hills.

Located in the stunning SintraCascais Natural Park, Penha Longa Golf Club is one of Portugal’s finest golf destinations, offering a 27hole layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and a five-star Ritz Carlton hotel. The golf club features two courses: the Atlantic Championship Course (18 holes) and the Monastery Course (9 holes).

Cascais, Estoril & Lisbon: The Golf Courses

The Atlantic Course is a par-72, 6,946-yard championship layout that has hosted multiple Portuguese Opens. Known for its rolling fairways, dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking mountain views, it blends parkland and links-style elements, making it a challenging yet scenic course. The Monastery Course is a shorter, par-35 layout, ideal for a relaxed round.

Lisbon Sports Club

Par: 69, Yardage: 5,900. Founded in 1922, Lisbon Sports Club is a traditional golf course that meanders through wooded hills and a small river. It is a shorter, technical course, rewarding accuracy over distance. The tree-lined fairways, sloping greens and natural hazards make it a charming but challenging layout. A unique feature is its historic clubhouse, which provides an old-world ambiance, reflecting the club’s British and Portuguese heritage.

ways, cunning bunkers and large greens, making them ideal for long hitters. Riba I is the tougher of the two, designed for tournament play, while Riba II is more forgiving, making it suitable for mid-handicap players. The courses are known for their

peaceful setting, excellent practice facilities and affordable green fees.

Often overlooked in favour of the more famous golf courses, Riba is definitely worth your green-fee.

Several super holes; including the 18th, which features a lake guarding the green. The course is a quiet favourite among my clients.

Cascais, Estoril & Lisbon: The Golf Courses

Par: 71, Yardage: 6,967. Very near Cascais and ranked among the top golf courses in Europe, Oitavos Dunes is a first-class links course designed by Arthur Hills, set along Portugal’s stunning Atlantic coastline in Cascais. The course is part of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, offering breathtaking ocean views and a challenging layout influenced by natural sand dunes and coastal winds. The signature hole is the par-3 14th, where players must carry their tee shot over a deep ravine while not losing their concentration over the scenery.. The fast, undulating greens and links-style fairways make Oitavos a true test of golf, rewarding accuracy and strategy. It’s a great blend of difficult and relatively kind holes. The splendid clubhouse adds to the style. The on-site hotel is currently being rebuilt and will re-open in 2027.

Par: 71 Yardage: 6,650. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr., Quinta da Marinha is a scenic resort course with a mix of pine-lined fairways, water hazards and ocean views. The course offers a blend of typical risk-and-reward holes, including the par-4 13th, which demands a well-placed drive over a water hazard. Perfect for holiday golf.

Costa da Caparica & Comporta

Starting just 20km from Lisbon and reached by bridge over the River Tagus, the area includes Caparica at the northern tip and extends south to Sesimbra and the Arrabida National Park about 20 miles away, lying on the opposite coast. Carry on for about an hour and you reach Comporta which will soon rank among the strongest areas for golf in Europe. Long favoured by trendy Lisboners, the area is gathering pace in its quest to be known as the qualityled but charming destination where nature plays the biggest part. As a rule of thumb prices are great value at Caparica and increase as you head south.

Caparica is little-known outside of Portugal but is a vibrant coastal resort known for its long sandy beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and excellent golf courses. A favourite escape for locals, Caparica offers a mix of surf culture, seafood restaurants and natural beauty, making it a great destination for those looking to combine relaxation, outdoor activities and golf.

One of the key attractions near Caparica is the Aroeira Golf Resort, home to two 18-hole golf courses PGA I and PGA as well as the Aroeira Lisbon Hotel, a modern golf retreat offering comfortable accommodations and a fun vibe.

Unlike the sheltered beaches of Cascais, Caparica’s coastline is open to the Atlantic, making it a great spot for surfers as well as beach lovers. Praia da Fonte da Telha, Praia da Mata and Praia do Castelo are among the most famous beaches, known for soft sand, clean waters and excellent beach bars (chiringuitos). The Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica is a protected nature reserve with cliffs, dunes, and pine forests that make it perfect for hiking and cycling.

With its relaxed vibe, stunning coastline, and easy access to Lisbon, Costa da Caparica is an ideal base for golfers looking to enjoy both the beach and the best of the golf courses both north and south of the river.

Comporta & Troia – the Alentejo Coast south of Lisbon

The Alentejo region, stretching across central and southern Portugal, is a true hidden gem that offers a strikingly different experience compared to the bustling towns and coastal hotspots. Known for its vast landscapes, charming towns and slower pace of life, Alentejo is ideal for those seeking tranquillity, natural beauty and an authentic taste of Portuguese culture. It’s a wonderful place to breath new energy into your soul and golf swing. The area starts at Troia in the north to beyond Sines in the south. For reference, Faro is two hours further south.

Troia is still the main resort in the region with its hotels and golf course delib-

erately and spaciously spread out over the marina and long resort entrance. The resort is seasonable but has the advantage of being just a very short (and cheap) ferry ride from the seaside city of Setubal where eating and drinking is great fun year-round and fantastic value. The ferry service runs all day so it’s easy to play golf, have a relaxing afternoon and then head into Setubal for drinks and dinner before taking the ferry back to Troia and hitting the casino before bed.

One of the defining features of Alentejo is its dramatic scenery. Rolling golden plains, olive groves, vineyards and cork oak forests stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a serene and soulful atmosphere. The region’s beauty is perhaps best during spring when wildflowers blanket the fields, or in autumn when the vineyards come alive with the grape harvest. The skies in Alentejo are equally stunning, offering some of the clearest stargazing opportunities in Europe, especially in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve; an internationally recognised starlight destination. Alentejo’s towns and villages exude historic charm. The hilltop town of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famed for its Roman Temple, medieval walls and whitewashed houses. Oth-

Caparica & Comporta

er gems include Monsaraz, with its cobbled streets and castle overlooking the Alqueva Lake and Marvão, perched atop a mountain with panoramic views. The village of Comporta itself has plenty of restaurants and is a 15minute from brilliant beaches and two beach restaurants. Seasonal, Comporta is super-trendy in the summer, charming in the spring and autumn and quiet over the winter.

Troia

For food and wine lovers, Alentejo is a paradise. The region is renowned for its robust red wines and hearty cuisine, including dishes like açorda alentejana (bread soup) and porco preto (black pork). Many vineyards offer tastings and tours, giving visitors a chance to sample the rich flavours of the land.

Alentejo’s tranquil rhythm is perfect for those looking to disconnect and recharge. Activities like hiking, cycling and exploring the Alqueva Lake by kayak or boat add to the allure. For beach lovers, the Alentejo coast offers wild, rugged beaches like Zambujeira do Mar and Vila Nova de Milfontes, far removed from crowded tourist destinations. By summer 2025, the region will have five outstanding golf courses; I think it’s the most exciting new golf holiday region for decades.

Caparica & Comporta: The Golf Courses

PGA

Golf Resort

Sometimes referred to as the "Wentworth of Lisbon", PGA

Aroeira Golf Resort is a prestigious golf and lifestyle community nestled in a serene pine forest, just 25 minutes from Lisbon and 10 minutes from Caparica’s beaches. Under new ownership for a couple of years, both golf courses (PGA I & II) have been remodelled and the standards of green-keeping is excellent. A new 120 bedroom hotel will open on PGA II in 2027.

well presented course, a delightful clubhouse and inexpensive green fees.

PGA II

Par: 72 Yardage: 7,017 yards Designer: Donald Steel

PGA II is a longer, more modern layout, designed with tournament play in mind. It features large lakes, wider fairways, and elevated greens, creating a risk-and-reward environment. I prefer the No.1 golf course but No.2 is a great complement. With five lakes and many strategically placed bunkers, PGA II requires smart course management but its overall a little easier than its sister course. The par-5 10th hole is one of its highlights, offering a long dogleg fairway around a lake.

Montado

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,648 yards Designer: Frank Pennink. The PGA I course is a classic parkland course, featuring tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering and fast, subtle greens. The mature pine forest creates a tranquil layout, rewarding accuracy over power. The back nine is super. PGA I has hosted the Portuguese Open twice. The maintenance has been upgraded over the last couple of years so you’ve now good a very fair and

Now over 30 years old, Montado’s par-72, 7,000yard layout provides a challenging yet enjoyable round. The course features wide fairways, well-placed bunkers, and rolling greens, demanding precision and strategy. One of the most iconic holes is the par-3

18th, where the green is located on an island surrounded by water, creating a dramatic and memorable finishing hole. Other standout holes include the par-5 4th, which requires a strong tee shot over a natural ravine and the par4 14th, where water hazards come into play on both the approach and the green. The on-site hotel has reopened after a full renovation.

Caparica & Comporta: The Golf Courses

Quinta do Peru

Located in Azeitão, just 25 minutes south of Lisbon and pretty much in the middle of Costa da Caparica region, Quinta do Peru Golf Resort is a championship-level course set against the breathtaking backdrop of the

Arrábida Mountains. Designed by Rocky Roquemore and opened in 1994, the par-72, 6,950-yard layout is a classic. Tree-lined fairways, undulating greens and a few water hazards provide plenty of challenge without being too tough. Its picturesque too and a fine and fair challenge.

Quinta do Peru has hosted European Challenge Tour events, proving its reputation as a championship-level course with top-tier playing conditions. The welcome and understated clubhouse is delightful.

Tróia

Tróia Golf Course, designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., is an ageing gem and one of the most challenging courses in Portugal. Located on the Tróia Peninsula, this par-72 course stretches 6,920 yards and is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado Estuary. The course features a classic links-style layout with undulating fairways and fast greens. Coastal winds add an extra layer of difficulty.

Tróia Golf is widely acclaimed and it consistently ranks

among the top courses in Europe. However, compared to the newer golf courses in the area, Troia needs some TLC to bring it back to its true glory –with a new owner around the corner, we’re expecting Troia to reach its former glories. In the meantime, it’s a very fine design and fantastic value.

Pinheirinho

Undulating fairways, water hazards, waste bunkers and plenty of treesyou'd think you're in for a hard day but Pinheirinho is more beauty than beast and arguably has the best setting of all the courses in the area.

I had a sneaky few holes in February 2025 and loved it. A long-delayed golf and residential project, Pinheirinho’s new owners have upgraded the original plans and Pinheirinho sits very comfortably with its much-esteemed neighbouring golf courses.

Comporta Dunas

The Comporta Dunas Golf Course is an eagerly anticipated addition to Portugal’s golfing scene. Designed by world-famous architect David McLay Kidd, this par-71 course spans 7,268 yards off the tips and is set amidst pristine sand dunes and pine forests, creating a natural and tranquil environment. There are six sets of tees and I would suggest not playing off the back unless you’re daft like me.

The course emphasizes sustainability and environmental preservation. Though a new addition, Comporta Dunes has quickly garnered praise and is

Caparica & Comporta: The Golf Courses

the first golf course to launch into Europe’s Top 10 golf courses in its first year. The layout offers a mix of challenging holes, including long par-4s and strategic par-5s. Having recently played it, I can give Comporta Dunas a strong 9/10. The welcome is warm, maintenance superb and the site is exceptional.

Comporta Torre

Comporta Torre, also located in the Comporta region, opens in June 2025. Torre is designed to complement the existing Dunas course, offering a slightly different challenge with its flatter layout and emphasis on precision rather than power. It features wide fairways but well-placed hazards, encouraging the thinking golfer.

Given that Torre was designed by Sergio Garcia, it’s likely that great iron play will be rewarded. A visit in March whetted my appetite.

Costa Terra

A ultra-private golf club and residential “Members Only” resort, we can arrange inspection visits to this world-class development for potential members and property owners.

Western Algarve

The Western Algarve, known for its rustic coastline, rolling hills and Mediterranean climate, boasts a couple of Portugal’s most renowned golf courses. Among the standout courses in this region are Palmares Golf, Amendoeira Faldo and a handful of other treats that make the area a hub for golf enthusiasts willing to travel that little bit further out in order to find quieter fairways and cheaper green-fees.

The western Algarve is a captivating destination. Centred around towns like Lagos and Portimão, the region offers a diverse array of attractions that appeal to all types of holidaymakers. Lagos is an historic town with a vibrant atmosphere and surrounded by natural beauty. Its cobblestone streets and rustic buildings are filled with lively restaurants, shops and cafes. The town’s historical highlights include the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira; a 17th-century fort and the Church of Santo António, known for its intricate gold-leaf interior. Lagos’ coastline is cinematic, featuring iconic landmarks like Ponta da Piedade, where towering rock formations and sea caves create a dramatic backdrop for boat tours or kayaking adventures. Nearby beaches, such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, are famous for their golden sands and crystal-clear waters.

Portimão, located further east, is a bustling town celebrated for its marina, cultural attractions and proximity to Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve’s most famous beaches. The beach is framed by cliffs and offers a lively boardwalk lined with restaurants and bars. For a taste of local culture, visit the Portimão Museum, housed in a former fish cannery, which tells the story of the region’s fishing heritage. I always love to visit the fish restaurants by the port as it reminds me of when, as a young boy, my parents would take us to have fresh sardines grilled with lemon and salt cooked by the fishermen as soon as they brought the catch home. Back then, Portimao was also famous for leather shoe manufacturing – I don’t think they make them anymore but at least the sardines are still coming in.

The western Algarve’s natural beauty extends to places like Sagres, known for its rugged cliffs and ancient fort, and the Costa Vicentina, a pristine natural park perfect for hiking. Combining great landscapes, history and lively towns, the western Algarve offers a rich and varied experience for visitors, away from the more upmarket central Algarve.

Western Algarve: The Golf Courses

Palmares

Located near Lagos, Palmares Golf is one of the Portugal’s crown jewels. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this 27-hole course features three distinctive loops of nine holes: the Alvor, Lagos, and Praia courses. Each loop combines elements of links and parkland golf, taking full advantage of its prime location overlooking the Bay of Lagos and the Atlantic Ocean. The Alvor and Praia loops are particularly reminiscent of traditional links courses, with undulating fairways, sandy dunes and regular ocean breezes. The Lagos loop, meanwhile, is more parkland in style, with tree-lined fairways and elevated greens. Palmares is consistently ranked among Europe’s top courses, earning a Top 20 spot in Golf World’s latest Top 100 Continental European Courses.

Amendoeira

Situated near Silves, Amendoeira Golf Resort is home to two championship courses; the Faldo Course and the O’Connor Jnr Course, both of which provide distinct challenges in a picturesque setting.

The Faldo Course, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, is a par-72 course stretching 7,215 yards. It requires strategic play to overcome the rocky outcrops, desert -style landscaping and elevated greens. Faldo’s philosophy of "thinking your way around the course" is evident, as each hole demands precise execution.

The O’Connor Jnr Course offers a contrasting experience. Also a par-72 course, it is slightly shorter at 6,718 yards. The course features wide, forgiving fairways, lakes and gently undulating terrain, making it more accessible for players of all skill levels while still posing a challenge with its water hazards.

The Pestana Alto, Gramacho and Vale da Pinta golf courses are three of the most well-regarded courses in the region with Gramacho and Vale da Pinta rated among the Top 50 courses in the country. Each offers a distinct challenge and character.

Pestana Alto

Western Algarve: The Golf Courses

Designed by Sir Henry Cotton

who lived in the area for the latter part of his life, Penina Alto

Golf is a classic parkland course that stretches 6,675 yards from the back tees. Known for its tight fairways, the course rewards accuracy over power. The standout hole is the 16th, often called "O Gigante" (The Giant), a par 5 measuring 600 meters (656 yards)—one of the longest in Europe. The layout is walkable, making it a good choice for those who prefer not to use a buggy.

Pestana

Gramacho

Originally designed as a nine-hole course by Ronald Fream, Gramacho was later expanded with input from Nick Price. The course is known for its rolling terrain, olive trees and natural rock outcrops, giving it a rather unique look.

With a par of 71 and a relatively moderate length of 6,680 yards, Gramacho provides a fair test.

layout designed by Ronald Fream. With elevated tees and large undulating greens, it requires careful club selection to avoid a threeputt. The course is also known for its 1,500-year-old olive tree near the 10th hole.

Located near Lagos, Espiche is a par-72 course set within a nature reserve. Its ecofriendly design sits very easily within the surrounding landscape, offering a peaceful, challenging experience.

Pestana Vale da Pinta

A par 71, 6,700-yard course, Vale da Pinta is a championship

Vilamoura

Vilamoura is a resort town that appeals to all types of visitors. Famous for its beaches, vibrant marina, and world-class golf courses, Vilamoura has become a premier destination for those seeking a mix of relaxation and recreation.

Vilamoura’s transformation into a luxurious resort town began in the 1960s. Originally a small fishing village, the area was created as a hub for elite tourism. Over the decades, Vilamoura has grown into a sprawling 2,000-hectare complex, featuring elegant hotels, residential villas, championship golf courses, and the lively marina area. Despite its modern development, the area retains traces of its past, including the Cerro da Vila Roman ruins, which date back to the 1stCentury: these archaeological remains showcase ancient Roman baths, fish salting tanks and mosaics, offering a glimpse into the region’s historical significance.

Praia da Marina, located next to the marina, is a bustling beach perfect for sunbathing and water-sports. Its atmosphere is complemented by beachfront bars and restaurants. Just east lies Praia da Falésia, a stunning 6km stretch of sand framed by dramatic red cliffs and pine trees. Quieter than Praia da Marina, it’s ideal for long walks, swimming or simply enjoying the breathtaking natural scenery. Vilamoura’s marina is the heart of the resort and one of Europe’s most prestigious. Opened in 1974, it has grown to accommodate over 1,000 yachts and is surrounded by an array of chic bars, fine dining restaurants and designer boutiques. By day, visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, shop for high-end goods or book a boat trip. At night, the marina comes alive with a buzzing nightlife scene, offering everything from cocktail lounges to night clubs.

The golf courses in the Algarve are celebrated for their exceptional design, high maintenance standards and year-round playability. Vilamoura’s central location within the Algarve means golfers can easily access multiple courses, making it an ideal base for a golf holiday.

Vilamoura is a golfer’s paradise with six championship courses in and around the resort; including The Old Course, Pinhal and Millennium Golf Course so it’s easy to see why the area is a magnet for golf enthusiasts. Plus, within 20 minutes’ drive you have the golfing gems in and around Quinta do Lago to add to your collection.

Vilamoura: The Golf Courses

Par: 73 Yardage: 6,839 yards.

Known as the “Grand Dame” of Algarve golf, the Dom Pedro Old Course is one of Portugal’s oldest and most revered layouts.

Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1969, it features a classic parkland design with tree-lined fairways and gently undulating terrain. The Old Course demands decent accuracy off the tee, as towering pine trees and well-placed bunkers punish errant shots. Signature holes include the par-4 4th, with its elevated green, and the challenging par3 16th, which requires a precise shot to a narrow green surrounded by trouble. The Old Course is a must-play.

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,784 yards.

The Millennium Golf Course is one of the most popular courses in Vilamoura, thanks to its player-friendly design. Opened in 2000 and designed by Martin Hawtree, it features a mix of open holes and tree-lined fairways, providing variety. The front nine is more forgiving, while the back nine weaves through dense pine

forests, requiring greater precision.

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,948 yards

The Pinhal Golf Course, designed by Frank Pennink in 1976 and updated by Robert Trent Jones Jr., combines classic charm. It’s much liked for its tranquil setting despite being just 2km from Vilamoura centre. The course is set among rolling parkland and features narrow fairways lined with pine trees, making accuracy a key factor. Water hazards come into play on several holes and the small and numerous add an extra layer of difficulty. .

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,706 yards

The Laguna Golf Course offers a different experience from the other Vilamoura courses, with its links-style design and open fairways. Designed by Joseph Lee in 1990, the course features numerous lakes and large bunkers that demand thoughtful shot-making. With a holes close to the sea, the coastal winds can also play a significant role.

Vila Sol

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,947 yards

Located just a short drive from Vilamoura, the Vila Sol Golf Course is another gem in the area. Designed by Donald Steel and opened in 1991, Vila Sol is divided into three loops of nine holes: the Prime, Challenge, and Prestige courses. The Prime and Challenge loops make up the main 18-hole course, offering a mix of tree-lined fairways, water hazards, and complicated greens.

The Victoria course is currently being redesigned by Ernie Els and will reopen in summer 2025 as a private club with only a limited number of paying tee-times available each day

Vilamoura: The Golf Courses

Located north of Vilamoura, near the charming town of Loulé, Ombria golf course is the most exciting additions to the Algarve’s golfing landscape in recent years. Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, this par-71 course is set in a bucolic valley, surrounded by rolling hills, ancient oak trees and natural streams. This is the Algarve as it was in the 1960’s. Just 6,221 yards, the course is designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, emphasising sustainability and minimal environmental impact. Golfers will find a varied and strategic layout, with undulating fairways, clever bunkering and multi-tiered greens which require precision and smart course management. The eco-conscious design includes the use of native plants, water conservation methods and the preservation of existing landscapes. And it’s a fine test of golf despite its relatively short length. Ombria’s luxurious clubhouse offers panoramic views over the course and provides high-end facilities. The course is part of the Ombria Resort with a five-star Viceroy hotel, enormous spa and upscale dining options. A very fine addition to the region and already requested by many clients.

Quinta Do Lago

Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are two of Europe’s most prestigious resorts, renowned for their smart accommodations, world-class golf courses, restaurants and soothing coastline. In fact, after Avenida Liberdade in Lisbon, Quinta do Lago is Portugal’s second most expensive residential area. It gives you a healthy dose of Elysium.

Quinta do Lago

Founded in 1972 by entrepreneur André Jordan, Quinta do Lago was designed as an elite, eco-conscious retreat. Spanning 2,000 acres within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, this resort blends luxury living with protected natural landscapes. Its golf courses, including the North, South, and Laranjal, are in-

ternationally acclaimed, with the South Course hosting multiple Portuguese Opens.

Beyond golf, Quinta do Lago offers pristine beaches, fine dining and upscale ambience. The Quinta do Lago Lake is a tranquil spot for water sports, and the Boardwalk, a scenic pathway through the Ria Formosa wetlands, are landmarks that define its link with nature.

The resort’s Campus sports hub attracts professional and keen amateur athletes throughout the year…Or maybe it’s just a great excuse for a holiday!

Vale do Lobo

Founded in 1962, Vale do Lobo is Portugal’s first purpose-built luxury resort. Its iconic Royal and Ocean Golf Courses, designed by Sir Henry Cotton, are celebrated for their beauty. The Royal Course’s 16th hole, a par-3 overlooking cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most photographed holes in golf. The resort also features Praça, a lively beachfront square with restaurants, bars and events. Vale do Lobo’s expansive villas, wellness facilities and restaurants..

The Quinta do Lago area is among Europe’s most prestigious golf destinations, with three courses at Quinta do Lago, the legendary San Lorenzo, two at Vale do Lobo and Pinheiros Altos; you’ve got a beautiful golf course for every day of the week.

Quinta do Lago: The Golf Courses

Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago boasts three truly championship golf courses: the South Course, North Course, and Laranjal. Each course offers a unique challenge and immaculate conditions.

South

Par: 72 Yardage: 7,09. Designed by William Mitchell in 1974, the South Course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago and has hosted the Portuguese Open several times. It features wide fairways, water hazards on several holes and large, fast greens. Strategic play is key here.

North

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,776.

Redesigned by Beau Welling and Paul McGinley in 2014, the North Course is arguably the toughest course in the area. It features undulating greens, well-placed bunkers and clever use of water hazards.

Laranjal

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,945. Laranjal, located slightly outside Quinta do Lago, was originally an orange grove (hence its name!) Opened in 2009, it’s characterised by a huge variety of challenge and design, as well as a real mix of green sizes. But it all blends into a very enjoyable layout and brilliantly maintained – as are all three courses.

San Lorenzo

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,966. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, San Lorenzo is consistently ranked among Europe’s top courses. Designed by Joseph Lee in 1988, the course takes full advantage of its topography with several holes offering views of lagoons and the Atlantic Ocean, and others cut through the umbrella pine woodland. Under new ownership, the course is now back in good condition after suffering from erratic irrigation but the clubhouse is still temporary after the previous one burnt down.

Quinta do Lago: The Golf Courses

Vale do Lobo

Vale do Lobo features two legendary courses: the Royal and the Ocean, both designed by three-time Open winner and Hall of Famer Sir Henry Cotton who designed quite a few golf courses in Portugal when he retired there in the 1960’s with his wife Toots until his death in 1987. Sir Henry and Toots were classy, fun and elegant . As is Vale do Lobo.

Royal

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,692. Famous for the cliff-edge 16th hole, the Royal Course is challenging yet picturesque. A generous and beautiful walk on lush fairways in idyllic surroundings.

Pinheiros Altos Golf Course

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,615. Pinheiros Altos, located within Quinta do Lago, features three loops of nine holes: Oliveiras, Pines, and Corks. Each loop offers a unique challenge, with water hazards dominating the landscape. The Corks nine is particularly tricky, featuring tight fairways and a demanding closing stretch. A pleasant golf course, Pinheiros Altos is nevertheless rated behind its neighbouring sister courses but the green-fee is keen.

Par: 73 Yardage: 6,671. The Ocean Course offers an even more relaxed layout, with holes running alongside the Atlantic. The back nine in particular provides stunning coastal views and plays slightly easier than the Royal.

Eastern Algarve

The Eastern Algarve is a region of Portugal that offers a quieter, more authentic experience compared to the busier Central Algarve resorts. Stretching from Faro to the Spanish border, it is known for its charming towns, rich history, beautiful beaches, and the beautifully rugged Ria Formosa Natural Park. The area retains much of its traditional Portuguese character.

The Eastern Algarve has a long and varied history; with influences from the Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, and the Portuguese Age of Discovery. The Moors, who ruled the region for centuries, left behind narrow streets, whitewashed houses and remnants of fortifications, particularly in towns like Tavira and Castro Marim. Tavira, one of the most picturesque towns in the Algarve, is often considered the historical heart of the region. It features Roman bridges, Moorish architecture, and numerous churches, such as the Igreja da Misericórdia and Santa Maria do Castelo, built on the site of an old mosque. The town’s castle offers memorable views over the rooftops and the Gilão River.

Just off the coast lies Tavira Island, home to one of the best beaches in the Algarve. With its golden sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming.

Cacela Velha is a small, cliff-top village with some of the most breathtaking views of the Algarve coastline. It is famous for its ancient houses, charming church and unspoiled beach below. Cacela Velha is also a fantastic spot for fresh seafood, particularly the local clams and oysters.

Another historically significant town is Castro Marim, located near the Spanish border. It was once an important military outpost, with a medieval castle and 17th-century fortifications that were key in defending Portugal. The castle and salt flats are popular attractions, while Vila Real de Santo António is known for its neoclassical architecture, lively marina and traditional tiled streets.

One of the great natural wonders of Portugal, Ria Formosa is a protected lagoon system stretching over 60 km along the coastline. This area of salt marshes, barrier islands and waterways is a haven for birdwatchers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Boat tours take you through the tranquil waters, passing traditional fishing villages, oyster farms and secluded beaches.

Eastern Algarve: The Golf Courses

Par: 72 Yardage: 7,224

Monte Rei is often regarded as Portugal’s best golf course and frequently ranked among Europe’s very finest. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this world-class championship course sits in the serene hills of the Eastern Algarve, offering breathtaking views and an exclusive playing experience. The course is meticulously maintained, featuring wide, undulating fairways but quite short and well-protected greens. This course is all about getting your ball into the best place for an approach. Water hazards come into play on a few holes and some of the carries are pretty demanding from the back. Monte Rei will take a couple of rounds to understand but its beauty and clever layout is undeniable. The clubhouse and overall experience makes Monte Rei a leader in European golf.

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,607

Quinta da Ria is located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park and this picturesque course blends natural beauty with a gradually more difficult layout featuring large fairways and large greens but plenty of hazards in between. The signature hole is the par-3 17th, which plays toward the sea with a green guarded by bunkers and offers one of the most scenic tee shots in Portugal. I always enjoy playing here as it’s fair without being too easy and the maintenance is exceptional.

Quinta de Cima

Par: 72 Yardage: 7,110

Often considered Quinta da Ria’s tougher sister course, Quinta de Cima is designed for lower handicappers and those looking for a greater challenge. The course features long, open fairways but numerous water hazards and a few narrower holes and plenty of trees, demand precision and strategy from tee to green. It’s a super golf course with a somewhat eclectic design coming together to make a fun and challenging game in delightful surroundings.

Quinta da Cima will be changing to a hybrid Bermuda grass in 2025 and will be closed from May 26-September 14 with some deliberate fairway “burning” from late April. During this period, our Quintas package (including Da Ria, Do Vale and De Cima) will be changed to exclude De Cima but include free transfers and free drink at Do Vale and buggy share at both Do Vale and Da Ria.

Monte Rei

Eastern Algarve: The Golf Courses

Quinta do Vale

Designed by the legendary Seve Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf Course is located near Castro Marim, close to the Spanish border. This 18-hole, par-72 championship course stretches 6,562 yards and provides a course where you can open your shoulders on most holes but think a bit harder on the remainder. Set in a beautiful natural landscape overlooking the Guadiana River, the course features a mix of wide fairways and tricky doglegs. There are six par3s, six par-4s and six par-5’s so everyone in the party should be happy.

Par: 71 Yardage: 6,138

Benamor is a cute and charming golf course and very much a Member’s Club with traditional clubhouse. The course meanders through the hills so you have views of the mountains on one side and the sea on the other (if you keep out of the trees!). Designed by Sir Henry Cotton, the fairways are relatively generous but several doglegs and undulating greens require precision, so I suggest you play fairly safe off the Tee as it’s not a long course and playing to the right spot will often be more rewarding then trying to get it close to the green. Benamor is a pleasant holi-

day golf course with a keen green-fee.

Castro Marim

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,665. Located near the Spanish border, Castro Marim is in a splendid spot where the course benefits from pine woodland, rolling hills and the Guadiana River. This 27-hole complex is divided into three 9hole loops The Atlantic, The Guadiana and The Grouse, each offering a slightly different challenge.

Castro Marim is a good course to play to keep your holiday cost down and/ or between the more difficult courses on your golfing agenda.

Isla Canela (Just across the border in Spain)

Par: 72 Yardage: 6,663. While technically just across the border in Spain,

Isla Canela is a popular choice for golfers staying in the Eastern Algarve due to its proximity to Monte Gordo and Castro Marim.

This flat and forgiving course winds through marshland and natural waterways. With affordable green fees and a laid-back atmosphere, Isla Canela is an enjoyable course for golfers of all abilities.

Benamor

Praia Verde Boutique Hotel **** BOUTIQUE CHIC

Praia Verde Boutique Hotel is located near Castro Marim, just 5 minutes from the beach and 10 minutes from the Spanish border. Nestled in a pine forest with ocean views, the hotel offers a peaceful retreat while still being close to vibrant coastal towns like Monte Gordo and Tavira.

This design-led boutique hotel has 65 suites (25 of which are brand new and the other 40 renovated), each with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Rooms feature private balconies and open-plan layouts.

I very much like the Praia Verde Boutique Hotel for its friendly atmosphere and attention-to-detail. One of its greatest attractions is the À TERRA Restaurant which specialises in wood-fired, Mediterranean and local-inspired cuisine. From the bread and butter at breakfast to the bedtime chocolates, as much as possible is produced in the kitchen which runs day and night. It’s hearty, delicious and about as eco-friendly as a restaurant can get. There’s also the Pool

Bar where light meals, cocktails and fresh juices are served in the outdoor setting.

A delightful hotel where you feel very welcome and very on a true holiday.

Verdelago Resort ***** ECO-LUXURY SELF-CATERING & HOTEL RESORT

The 80-hectare Verdelago Resort has direct access to the beach and a strong link to nature throughout the entire experience. There are apartments, villas and townhouses as well as the “Club” with its hotel, restaurants, bars, minimarket and top-class leisure facilities.

I’ve known about Verdelago for a few years and am very excited that this ambitious project has now opened. It’s a low-key, high-quality example of how tourism can satisfy our human needs as well as being beneficial to nature. Location-wise, it’s perfect for all the golf courses in the area.

Eastern Algarve: The Hotels

Cabanas Beach & Nature Resort **** ALL INCLUSIVE

Set in the Ria Formosa Natural Park this resort offers an eco-friendly experience with direct access to the beautiful Cabanas Beach and nearby Cabanas village and its splendid riverside promenade. The resort features 181 modern and eco-conscious rooms and suites that blend into the natural surroundings. Many rooms offer private terraces with great views wherever you look. The All Inclusive is generous with the Flor de Sal restaurant offering a buffet-style dining experience with a focus on fresh seafood, Portuguese dishes and international flavours; the Ria Lobby Bar for cocktails and snacks and the Pool Bar with its light meals and refreshments.

An excellent base from which to play golf by day and enjoy the All Inclusive in the evening, with a stroll through the adjacent coastal town of Cabanas (below) after dinner.

Robinson Club Quinta da Ria **** ALL-INCLUSIVE GOLF HOTEL

Robinson Club Quinta da Ria is located in Vila Nova de Cacela and just a sand wedge from two top-rated golf courses – Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima.

Surrounded by the Ria Formosa Natural Park and sea, the resort also offers direct access to the beach. The nearby golf clubhouse serves tasty food with a nice wine list. However, Robinson’s is All Inclusive so why leave the hotel? The main hotel restaurant is an extensive buffet with international cuisine, themed nights and live cooking stations; there is a fine dining option with an A La Carte menu (it’s about €15 supplement) featuring fresh seafood and local meats, and the Pool & Beach Bar serves cocktails, fresh juices and light meals in a laid-back setting.

The 279-bedroom resort is lively yet relaxed, with a focus on sports, wellness and entertainment with a super choice of free exercise classes. AllInclusive drinks are served all day long and the breakfast, lunch, an afternoon bistro and dinner will keep you very happy.

A short drive from both Cabanas Beach and Tavira and with the two super courses on-site, Robinson Club is a long-term and deserved favourite.

Monte Rei Villas & Resort ***** LUXURY VILLA AND APARTMENT COMPLEX

How best to describe Monte Rei? Firstly, the golf course is gorgeous and difficult until you get to know how to play to the short greens (post-round, the Pro told me that I should have drawn it off the tee and faded it into the greens...If only it was that easy!). The accommodation is beautifullyappointed and ranges from One to Four Bedroom Apartments adjacent to the clubhouse, to multi-bedroom villas further away.

Situated on a remote hill-top 15 minutes from Tavira and 20 minutes from Spain, Monte Rei provides privacy, luxury and world-class golf. It’s advantage and disadvantage is one and the same – it’s gloriously remote location makes it exclusive and serene, but you do need to take a taxi or drive for 15 minutes to get to a choice of restaurants. Saying that, the Vistas Rui Silvestre is Monte Rei’s Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant, serving creative Portuguese cuisine and The Grill (open all day) is a more casual restaurant serving grilled meats and seafood. The Veranda Bar is by the communal villa pool where you can have light snacks and drinks while enjoying the holiday splashes and fun.

The apartments share another communal pool and gym and are truly exceptional with designer kitchen, huge lounge and panoramic terrace. The villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, feature private pools (as well as the large communal pool), fully-equipped kitchens and spacious living areas.

I would suggest Monte Rei is perfect for groups of serious golfers and families who like space and the reassurance of very smart hotel facilities and service.

Vila Galé Tavira **** COMFORTABLE BASE

Vila Galé Tavira is located in the historic centre of Tavira, one of the most charming and culturally rich towns in the Algarve. Positioned along the Gilão River, the hotel is within easy walking distance to traditional markets, cobbled streets filled with restaurants and bars, and ferry access to Tavira Island Beach.

Behind the unassuming entrance, the hotel has 268 rooms and suites, designed with classic Portuguese decor. Many rooms have balconies overlooking the river, gardens or swimming pool.

You’re in the perfect location from which to explore the wonderful town and its bars and restaurants but the hotel has a fantastic-value buffet-style restaurant featuring Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh fish and local delicacies. The Alibabar Bar is a good place to start the evening and the Pool Bar keeps you hydrated whilst working out how to improve tomorrow’s score.

Madeira

Madeira, known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” is a verdant and picturesque Portuguese island that offers a blend of natural beauty, mild year-round weather and a couple of lovely golf courses. In 2026, golf in Madeira is going to dramatically change with the opening of the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Ponta do Porgo golf course on the coast 50 minutes west of Funchal. The clifftop setting is spectacular and Sir Nick believes it’s going to be considered as one of the great courses.

Whether you are a nature lover, a golfer, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, Madeira provides an memorable experience with its lush gardens, dramatic landscapes and welcoming climate. One of Madeira’s biggest attractions is its exquisite gardens, which thrive due to the island’s subtropical weather and fertile volcanic soil. These gardens are home to a spectacular variety of exotic flowers, rare trees and well-manicured landscapes. Monte Palace Tropical Garden – located in the hills above Funchal is a breathtaking garden featuring Asian-inspired landscapes, koi ponds, waterfalls and exotic plants from around the world. The views over Funchal Bay are spectacular, and visitors can reach the garden via the famous cable car from Funchal. The Madeira Botanical Garden boasts over 2,500 species of plants, offering a mesmerising blend of tropical and Mediterranean flora. The Palheiro Gardens (part of the Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel and estate) feature centuries-old camellias, cypress trees and elaborate flower beds.

Madeira’s greatest asset is its year-round mild climate. The island benefits from warm summers (23–26°C) and mild winters (16–19°C), with little seasonal variation. The Atlantic Ocean regulates the temperature, preventing extreme heat in summer and keeping the island warm during winter. The northern side of the island is slightly cooler and greener, while the south, where Funchal is located, is sunnier and drier.
