A New Chapter for Aroeira DETAILS transforms the golf landscape As Details - Hospitality, Sports, Leisure embarks on an exciting new journey, the management company is set to elevate some of Portugal’s most celebrated golf courses, including the renowned Old Course in Vilamoura, part of Vilamoura Golf Collection, renovated recently with a new clubhouse set to open in November. Meanwhile, the Aroeira golf courses have now been rebranded as PGA Aroeira Lisboa, marking a significant milestone in their storied legacy.

The two courses - PGA Aroeira No.1 (formerly known as Aroeira Pines Classic or Aroeira I) and PGA Aroeira No.2 (previously Aroeira Challenge or Aroeira II - will proudly carry the prestigious PGA National Portugal brand. PGA Aroeira No.1 recently underwent extensive renovations, significantly improving the overall playing experience. Over a six-month upgrade in 2024, enhancements were made

to bunkers, tees, greens, and the irrigation system. Sustainability was a core focus, with reshaped bunkers filled with new sand and the repair and relining of course lakes to enhance water retention and quality. A state-of-the-art irrigation system will also reduce water usage by over 20%, ensuring the course remains in top condition while being environmentally conscious.

PGA Aroeira No.2 is also set to receive renovations in the near future, aimed at elevating the golfing experience to new heights. Together, these two courses will solidify PGA Aroeira Lisboa’s position as a premier golfing destination in Portugal, located just 25 minutes from Lisbon. Palmares targets top European accolade at World Golf Awards Palmares Ocean Living & Golf’s landmark clubhouse – one of the most distinctive 19th holes in European golf – has been shortlisted for the coveted accolade of ‘Europe’s Best Clubhouse’ at the annual World Golf Awards.

The acclaimed building, which enjoys expansive panoramic views of the Bay of Lagos, the Alvor Estuary and the 27-hole venue’s nine-hole Praia loop, heads an impressive list of venues that have been nominated for the award, with the winner set to be announced at a glittering prize-giving ceremony in Madeira in November.

Opened in autumn 2020, Palmares’ clubhouse was designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winners RCR Arquitectes. As well as being a centre for all golf and real-estate concierge services, the clubhouse – built with red concrete and blending seamlessly into the surrounding environment – is home to two restaurants that serve both golfers and residents, including the Michelin-star AL SUD. AL SUD, which acquired its Michelin star in just five months following its opening and has retained it every year since, offers inspired

Mediterranean cuisine with strong local influence under the culinary expertise of the resort’s renowned head chef, Louis Anjos.

Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura to rejuvenate iconic Old Course Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura, recently crowned 2024 IAGTO Portugal Golf Resort of the Year, is undertaking an extensive renovation of the iconic Old Course to cement its place among the best courses in Europe.

The second oldest course in the Algarve has undergone a fundamental and sustainable series of updates over the last few months, with a new state-of-the-art clubhouse set to open in November.

The new clubhouse will include upgrades to the entrance, golf shop, living room, restaurant, bar, and the terrace area, giving it a classic and elegant look and feel that compliments the overall legacy of the course.

As a result of the renovations, the Old Course will be transformed into a premium gated club with an elevated experience, offering a personalised service, VIP concierge and world class playing conditions. Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura have also incorporated a vast range of on-course improvements to one of the Algarve’s most renowned layouts.

The renovations have focused heavily on sustainability, introducing a new long-term strategy to make it one of Europe’s most

environmentally friendly courses. Several key initiatives will be introduced such as new sprinkler systems and water-resistant grass varieties to reduce water consumption, hydropressor stations to reduce energy consumption, and new 100% electric machinery.

The changes are being made without the course, first opened in 1968, having to close and hopefully minimising the impact and enjoyment of visiting golfers. All on-course developments are due to be completed by the end of August.

Greens and fairways will all receive careful maintenance, bunkers will be sharpened with new sand, lips and slopes, and tee boxes will have Bermuda grass planted, their roots sanitized, levelled, and some will be occasionally reoriented, making the tees environmentally sustainable and of premium quality.

The overall appearance of the course will have more definition between the grassed play areas and the iconic landscape of pine trees.

This definition will have a massive impact on both the appearance and quality, with the fairways receiving more sunlight.

Off the course and away from the clubhouse, there will be requalification to the driving range and additions of the most modern technology, enabling various training sessions and experiences, catering for all golfers. www.dompedrogolf.com

Palácio Estoril A hotel where history is made In the Palácio Estoril Hotel you travel back in time, but on a journey that also continues in the present and into the future.

Built in 1930, today´s Palácio Hotel retains many of the characteristics of that period.

The ambience of exclusiveness that pervades the Hotel makes an impression on everybody who enters it, from its imposing, entirely white facade and beautiful gardens to its elegant classic decor, which has been updated over the years but without losing its combination of timeless, luxury and sophistication.

During the Second World War, due to Portugal’s neutrality several royal families went into exile in Estoril, which became known as the “Coast of Kings”. The Hotel Palácio was the chosen home of numerous members of European royalty and was also the haunt of British and German spies, who could often be found in its bar. Later, these stories of intrigue

and espionage inspired famous novelists and filmmakers and the Hotel served as the set for the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

The Palácio Estoril was the second home of the Spanish, Italian, French, Bulgarian and Romanian royal families, and even today remains a favourite with their descendants.

In February 2011, the Royal Gallery was created in their honour, where you can view photographs of the important members of European royalty who stayed at the Hotel.

The Royal Gallery is now also one of Estoril’s tourist attractions.

From the beginning, the Palácio has hosted heads of state, emperors, kings and princes, European nobility, the world’s great artists, writers, sports champions, filmmakers and actors and many politicians who have shaped the destiny of the West. Private or State

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four

of the five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35.

As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par.

Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world.

A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

Traversing undulating parkland, many fairways are lined by pine trees. However, perhaps an even more significant challenge is presented by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines which present themselves on fairways and at times on the approach into greens. Length has recently been added on a number of holes, which ensure the test originally envisioned by Pennink is maintained. At a substantial 6,353 metres from the white tee markers, and with a par of 72, Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course is certainly no pushover, although golfers will be pleased to learn that the ponds and stream

The front nine are laid in the base of two untouched landscape banks with a ‘wall to wall’ design and very well-defined grass limits that create an ever-changing look throughout the seasons. Magnificent holm trees, preserved inside the playing areas, are an integral part in the course strategy and work as hazards.

The #1 tee welcomes the player with stunning views down the valley, this short part 5 offers a comfortable tee shot for all levels of golfers.

With a length of 518 meters, slight double dog-leg, it invites players to a gamble with the stream several times whilst the preserved old rock noria may block the view of the approach shot. The front nine loop ends with a true championship par 4 sandwiched between a lake on the left and the stream on the right that will reward players with picturesque views of the surrounding nature.

The back nine holes feature a very different, wider scenery. The #10-hole fairway is framed by two holm trees and is free of bunkers on the landing area which should provide a comfortable start of the back nine loop.

The San Lorenzo Golf Course was opened in 1988 and takes advantage of wonderful topography on the Quinta do Lago estate, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvas, King has crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas. The huge, moderately contoured greens, however, provide a stiff test if you’re to score well here.

AXIS GOLFE PONTE DE LIMA An 18-hole par 71 course of 6005 meters, Ponte de Lima Golf Club was inaugurated on the 15th of September 1995. Located on the rural area of Ponte de Lima, the golf course is a mix between level and hilly, the first nine holes being hilly and the second nine level.
