The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta looking picture perfect for summer launch The golfing world has been given a tantalising new glimpse of the challenge that awaits playing The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta in Portugal as the final countdown begins to the launch of architect David McLay-Kidd’s first course in mainland Europe this summer.

The par-71 links-style layout, which is situated one hour south of Lisbon, is one of the most eagerly-anticipated golf course design projects that will be unveiled in 2023 and has been captured in a new light by up-and-coming English photographer and videographer James Hogg ahead of being unveiled in June.

Hogg, who has photographed many of north-west England’s finest courses including Royal Birkdale, Formby and Hillside, as well as the new-look Links course at La Hacienda Links Golf Resort in southern Spain, spent three days bringing The Dunas Course to life with a combination of images and videos as preparations continue ahead of the venue opening in June.

Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “David McLay-Kidd has done an amazing job designing a world-class course on the most spectacular piece of golfing terrain I’ve ever seen.

“With the project now nearing its conclusion, it’s vital that we have a set of photographic and video content that shows the course off in its full glory and demonstrates why we are so excited about its launch.

“James was given a very specific brief and carried it out to perfection. We couldn’t be happier with everything he’s delivered and we are already looking forward to him returning to reshoot the course as it develops and matures over the coming years.”

Vanguard Properties, the largest real estate developer in Portugal, took ownership of the spectacular Terras da Comporta development in 2019 and the site features two plots: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land in the Alcácer do Sal municipality, and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares of land in the Grândola municipality.

Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain, The Dunas Course – which will measure 6,555 from its back tees – has been built using the highest sustainable practices and is predicted to quickly become of Europe’s must-play golfing venues when it opens.

Complementing The Dunas Course will be a new clubhouse and golf academy. Away from the fairways, an array of lifestyle activities will be available including horseriding, wellness and sailing, with a wide range of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums also on offer.

Aroeira makes giant leap in new European golf ranking

Aroeira Golf Courses, one of the most famous names in Portuguese golf, has been rewarded for a significant period of recent investment after making the biggest move in a new industry poll of Europe’s leading golf resorts – climbing up an amazing 64 places.

Nicknamed the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’ by many observers and nestled amid tranquil natural pine forest, the iconic venue – which sits 25km south of Lisbon – rose from 100th place to number 36 in National Club Golfer magazine’s updated list of the ‘Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe.

Palácio Estoril A hotel where history is made In the Palácio Estoril Hotel you travel back in time, but on a journey that also continues in the present and into the future.

Surrounded by lush gardens, nestling in the hillsides bordering the Costa Vicentina Natural Reserve sits Santo António Golf and Leisure Resorts.

Two kilometres north of the small fishing village of Salema and situated close to the rural village of Budens, the centerpiece of the resort is the spectacular 18 hole golf course designed by Pepe Gancedo, one of Spain’s´s most renown architects.

Opened in 1987, the course offers a challenge, which tempts golfers back time after time.

With no 2 holes remotely similar, the variety and appeals is endless.

From the stunning dog-legged 1st , to the majestic elevated green of the 18th, set in a natural amphitheatre bellow the clubhouse terrace, it is one of those rare courses that stretches your skills to the limit.

The famous `postage stamp´ short par three 5th, played from an elevated tee to a green which sits on top of a hillock, is a great favourite. The picturesque par three 11th, guarded on two sides by water, is followed by a par five which leads the player up the “Valley of the Wells” to another elevated green on the 12th.

On the tee, the player is presented with an imposing view of a fabulous lake, which has to be carried in order to reach the wide but shallow green. Water again comes into play on the 16th and 17th, where bold yet accurate tee shots will reap dividends for the brave, though both holes will also prove rewarding to the higher handicap golfer. One round is not enough to fully appreciate the imaginative design, or the magnificent views.

“Floresta Parque Golf Clube” was officially federated by the Portuguese Golf Federation in 1994 and has already earned a reputation for world-class golf, stating major events including the Expresso BPI Corporate Challenge, Finibanco Corporate Challenge,

and the Europro Tour Championship Finals.

The resort holds regular golf festivals, twice weekly competitions and boasts a busy social calendar for residents and visitors alike.

The golf course also includes the junior academy where youngsters are instructed on how to improve their skill and stance with our coach Rui Glória. Children of all levels are welcome.

Of course, the resort is not just a golf course.

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did.

The Course Today A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course.

Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the

five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine - producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35.

As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par.

Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world.

A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

From Faro International Airport: Head south for 130m. Take a slight left towards the N125-10, continue for 800m. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto N125-10, continue for 2.8km. Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees.

It is a conventional par 72 course wich four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse.

One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side of the

course with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only yhe 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrífice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These presente a tough testo f golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch.

Traditional Bermuda Tifton 419 grass has been used for the fairways, Rye grass for the semirough, Pencross for the greens and Penneagle for the Tees.

Traversing undulating parkland, many fairways are lined by pine trees. However, perhaps an even more significant challenge is presented by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines which present themselves on fairways and at times on the approach into greens. Length has recently been added on a number of holes, which ensure the test originally envisioned by Pennink is maintained. At a substantial 6,353 metres from the white tee markers, and with a par of 72, Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course is

certainly no pushover, although golfers will be pleased to learn that the ponds and stream which come into play on five holes should not, for the most part, present a serious threat.

One of the most remarked upon features of Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course, in Vilamoura, is the stunning panorama provided from the clubhouse, which extends over the excellent driving range and practice facilities and beyond. Completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, its veranda offers the perfect setting for post-round relaxation.

The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring

6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. A significant proportion of Dom Pedro Victoria’s acreage is occupied by lakes, forming hazards to be avoided but which also have a strategic purpose in providing reservoirs for irrigation.

A number of teeing options on each hole (often as many as six are offered), accompanied by wide but undulating fairways, provide a fair test of golf, although water and cleverly-positioned bunkers pose a constant threat.

Ombria’s 18-hole golf course is a 5 800 metre, par 71, boasting two 9-hole loops that are set in quite different terrains. The front nine are laid in the base of two untouched landscape banks with a ‘wall to wall’ design and very well-defined grass limits that create an ever-changing look throughout the seasons. Magnificent holm trees, preserved inside the playing areas, are an integral part in the course strategy and work as hazards.

The #1 tee welcomes the player with stunning views down the valley, this short part 5 offers a comfortable tee shot for all levels of golfers.

Presenting arguably the most challenging par 5, however, is the #2 hole. With a length of

518 meters, slight double dog-leg, it invites players to a gamble with the stream several times whilst the preserved old rock noria may block the view of the approach shot. The front nine loop ends with a true championship par 4 sandwiched between a lake on the left and the stream on the right that will reward players with picturesque views of the surrounding nature.

The back nine holes feature a very different, wider scenery. The #10-hole fairway is framed by two holm trees and is free of bunkers on the landing area which should provide a comfortable start of the back nine loop.

Moving along the remaining holes of the back nine, golfers can expect different challenges that require finesse and know-how.

The San Lorenzo Golf Course was opened in 1988 and takes advantage of wonderful topography on the Quinta do Lago estate, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.

The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve, was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500 metres (6,100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. AXIS GOLFE PONTE DE LIMA An 18-hole par 71 course of 6005 meters, Ponte de Lima Golf Club was inaugurated on the 15th of September 1995. Located on the rural area of Ponte de Lima, the golf course is a mix between level and hilly, the first nine holes being hilly and the second nine level.

SANTO DA SERRA GOLF Looking over the bay of Machico, where the Portuguese navigators first landed Madeira Island, lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a completely new and spectacular 27hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. Golf and nature live in perfect harmony with sport and environment.

The 2nd and 4th holes of the Machico Course remain unforgettable in the memories of

those who play there. The Machico and the Desertas courses are the ones that are usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the Serras Course maintains the same level. With four optional tees at each hole, the player may choose either a simple relaxing game or to a more challenging test. Boasting excellent quality fairways and greens with meticulous care given to the course conditions, Santo da Serra Golf used to host the annual Madeira Island Open on the European Tour. It is a true botanical garden, ornamented with four beautiful lakes, full of trees that give shade from the brilliant Atlantic sun.

PORTO SANTO GOLFE Porto Santo Golfe is a 27 hole golf club on the scenic island of Porto Santo in Madeira, Portugal. It has 2 different golf courses, 18 holes in our championship course and 9 par 3 holes in our academy course.

It opened on October 1st, 2004, and was designed by the Spanish 5-time major winner, Severiano Ballesteros.

The Championship course has 7,041 yard, par 72 layout features spectacular views, particularly on the back nine, as holes 13, 14 and 15 run alongside the rugged coastline.

The signature hole is the par 3 13th, which

measures 200 yards and requires a shot over a gorge to reach the cliff-top green.

In addition to the Championship course, we have the Academy course which is great for beginners or for practise irons shots.

There are also tennis facilities on-site.

Porto Santo Golfe was a venue for the Madeira Islands Open between 2009 and 2012 on the European Tour.
