truly notable and original, obtaining a difficult and attractive course. He was also original in his choice of Bermuda grass for the fairways and Pencross Bent on the greens, unusual species in the Europe of the sixties. The outcome of all this is a round which requires a precision game of golf.

“A great course must be a source of pleasure to the greatest possible number of players...” Robert Trent Jones Senior

Real Club de Golf Las Brisas aspires to be the private club of choice for those who appreciate an exceptional golf experience in an inviting social environment. The clubs focus is to provide excellent service, well maintained facilities, superb dining and a variety of social events and recreational activities for the benefit of members and their guests. Club History Real Club de Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. José Banús in 1968 as Club de Golf Nueva Andalucía. He was appointed its first President until 1981. For its design he chose the American, Robert Trent Jones. Before his death in 2000, at age 93, he designed and remodelled over 400 courses in 45 U.S. states, and 35 countries around the world - making him one of the most prolific golf course designers of the

To complement to the original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. At Las Brisas you can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where are trees representing all the continents: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias, the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia, Chorisia Speciosa from America and the Green Ash from Mexico, and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning the course into a veritable botanic garden.

20th century. At Real Club de Golf Las Brisas players can enjoy one of his greatest creations, and where he has perfectly implemented the many design philosophies which gained him a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Every hole at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has been carefully considered to be both pleasing to the eye and capable of challenging even the most experienced player. Numerous water hazards and prudent bunkering combine with subtle dog-legs to suggest careful planning and good shot making is required in order to achieve the lowest scores. There are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams, whilst the greens, the majority of which are raised, are amply protected by bunkers. The results of Robert Trent Jones’s efforts, which we continue to enjoy today, were

Sebastián de Miguel, undisputedly the best Spanish player of his time, was chosen as the Las Brisas professional. He represented Spain in the World Cup on twelve separate occasions, being second three times; he has been the Spanish Champion on five occasions, won three Spanish Opens and finished in the top ten at three British Opens.

Few Golf Clubs can be as proud of their sporting history as Las Brisas. In 1970, the year in which it was officially inaugurated together with Puerto Banús, it hosted the International Spanish Open. In 1973 Las Brisas hosted the Amateur Spanish Open and the World Golf Cup, at which the best players of the time competed, with the title being taken by the United States representatives Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller, the latter establishing the course record of 65. The Ladies’ record of 67 is held by the Spaniard Cristina Marsans. During the following ten years the Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer

and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,250 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years especially in 1985 and 1991 the Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions

like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro Am played the day before the competition. In 1989 the World Cup was held at Las Brisas for the second time and won by the Australian team, lead by Peter Fowler and Wayne Grady, with the Spanish team formed by José María Cañizares and José María Olazabal as runners up. During these years Las Brisas attained excellent sporting results with its teams and representatives, especially within Andalucía. Apart from playing host to the best golfers in the world, numerous personalities and celebrities have visited the Club. In 1970

Prince Rainier, Princess Grace of Monaco and Karim Aga Khan attended the inauguration Gala at which a young Julio Iglesias sang. Liza Minelli and Bing Crosby were amongst the celebrities who have been at Las Brisas. The relationship between the Spanish Royal Family and the Club is particularly noteworthy: Their Majesties the King and the Queen visited when they were heirs to the throne. The father of the King, D. Juan de Borbón, the Count of Barcelona, played and visited on numerous occasions, accepting the position of Honorary President of the Club for life and instituting the annual competition which bears his name. On the 23rd of May 1995 His Majesty the King, D. Juan Carlos I, granted Las Brisas the right to use the Royal prefix in recognition of its brilliant past and promising future. Royal Las Brisas is very much in demand as a members Club, not least for the fact that the golf course averages less than 100 players per day throughout the year, thus guaranteeing easy tee time reservation and probably the quickest average time for a round of golf on the whole coast.

Memberships available now The private status of Real Club de Golf Las Brisas allows very few visitors green fees. With around 1,225 members made up of over 30 different nationalities, Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has a warm and vibrant social scene which is enhanced by superb facilities. Recently renovated to the highest standards, the club features all the comforts expected of a modern golf club. The Restaurant and bar cater for a wide range of tastes, with both indoor and alfresco dining courtesy of a large terrace which overlooks the golf course. The exceptionally well stocked Golf Shop is managed by Golf ‘us, who bring their experience from over 60 outlets across Europe. Security is of paramount importance to the members of RCG Las Brisas. CCTV is employed in the ample car parking areas and is complemented by a card entry system for the members car park and locker rooms.

“Every course should be challenging, but it always should be fun to play.” Robert Trent Jones Senior

World Number One Holders of the Top Spot Although the top spot has changed hands 44 times since Bernhard Langer first took the position on April 6, 1986, since the creation of the Official World Golf Ranking (known as the Sony Ranking until 1997) only 13 players in all have held the coveted position of being officially the world’s number one golfer.

Tiger Woods (pictured left) holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one (281, from June 12, 2005 to October 24, 2010), as well as the most total weeks in the position at 623. The thirteen holders, and the total number of weeks at number one, are as follows, as at January 9, 2011: Bernhard Langer Severiano Ballesteros Greg Norman Nick Faldo Ian Woosnam Fred Couples Nick Price Tom Lehman Ernie Els David Duval Vijay Singh Tiger Woods Lee Westwood

3 weeks 61 weeks 331 weeks 97 weeks 50 weeks 16 weeks 44 weeks 1 week 9 weeks 15 weeks 32 weeks 623 weeks 11 weeks

MOST TIMES AS NO. 1 As the top spot has alternated between players over the years, Greg Norman (pictured bottom right) has reached number one 11 separate times, Tiger Woods 10 times, Seve Ballesteros (pictured top right) 5 and Nick Faldo 4, with Ernie Els and Vijay Singh 3 times each. SHORTEST TENURE Although several number ones - including Tiger Woods - have held the position for just one week before being displaced, only Tom Lehman among the twelve has been world number one for a single week in his career, in 1997. YOUNGEST Tiger Woods was 21 years, 5 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on June 15, 1997. OLDEST Vijay Singh was 41 years, 6 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on September 5, 2004, and 42 years, 3 months and 3 weeks old when he last held the position on June 11, 2005. NATIONALITIES Of the twelve number ones, only four have been Americans, the position also having been held by a German, a Spaniard, an Australian, an Englishman, a Welshman, a Zimbabwean, a South African and a Fijian. YEAR LONG HOLDERS Only three players have held the position for at least 52 successive weeks: Greg Norman,

Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. The same three players are also the only ones to been world number one for a full calendar year: Nick Faldo throughout 1993, Greg Norman throughout 1996, and Tiger Woods throughout 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Tiger Woods achieved the remarkable feat of holding onto the number one position all year, despite not competing for more than six months after his June 16 playoff victory for the US Open against Rocco Mediate, as he underwent knee surgery and recuperation. He was still world number one on February 25, 2009, when he resumed tournament golf at the Accenture Match Play Championship. HIGHEST POINTS TOTAL Tiger Woods also holds the record for the highest ever average points total, when he reached 32.44 points (1459.64 points accumulated over 45 tournaments) on June 3, 2001, shortly before the 2001 US Open, at which point he was the first player ever to hold all four professional major championships simultaneously - the so-called ‘Tiger Slam’.

BIGGEST LEAD Just before that, on May 20, 2001, Tiger Woods had also built the biggest ever lead in the rankings, when his 32.33 average points was 19.40 ahead of the then world number two Phil Mickelson on 12.93 average points.

G+ Women. Pacific-Blue Sporty-Chic In the G+ Pacific-Blue module, GOLFINO have combined the monochrome palette of black, white and marl with some of the loud colours associated with the 80s and 90s: acid-green and pacific-blue set the tone. Casual wear with discreet high-tech functionality is represented by a hooded sweater made of a trendy, mixed-grey jersey material, which looks like a simple sweater from the outside but is thinly laminated on the inside – making it 100% waterproof. The thin hood can be tucked into the collar, while pleats lend the sweater the necessary touch for a feminine, sporty-chic look. The silicone laminate material innovation embodies the ever-present performance aspect and can be found throughout the entire module in soft stripes. The latest fashion trends,

such as pagoda shoulders, are included and given a sporty interpretation with puffed sleeves on the polo shirts and half-zip sweaters. The outerwear in this module also features functional Dry Comfort. A further highlight is the extremely light and waterproof reversible jacket, which boasts powerful colours on one side and discreet shades of grey on the other. Druh Belts & Buckles Take Golf Market by Storm Druh Belts & Buckles, a unique range of stylish belts and buckles, were only launched just over a year ago by Yorkshireman and former touring pro Simon Hurd but already they have taken the golf market by storm.

Hurdy, as he is known on Tour, has in the past been known for the distinctive and colourful pork pie hats he dons on the golf course, but not for much longer as the overwhelming success of Druh has now placed him firmly on the golf fashion map. The immediate impact of the belts is according to Hurd down to the fact that they offer the discerning golfer an extensive selection of stylish handmade leather and snakeskin belts in sumptuous classic and chic casual styles and can be as outrageous or classical as the wearer wishes. Druh Belts are available in leather and water snakeskin in a variety of colours ranging from funky pastels and eye-catching metallics and in different embossed styles from crocodile to ostrich effect for the more adventurous golfers whilst also catering for the more traditional golfer who prefers his belts in black, white, brown or blue. Druh’s interchangeable buckles all featuring the signature ‘db’ logo in brushed nickel, polished silver or gold, diamante and enamel mean each belt can be customised to the individual taste of the wearer. A host of European pros such as David Howell, Graeme Storm and Simon Kahn can be seen

sporting Druh Belts & Buckles on tour whilst tour champions Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Ireland’s Paul McGinley all act as brand ambassadors for Druh. World number one Lee Westwood of England has also recently joined the stable of Druh ambassadors that are loving and wearing Druh. Druh has also proved a hit with the lady pros, so much so that the brand designed a range of signature flower buckles especially for girls. The new range features a pretty flower motif encrusted with a sparkling diamante ‘db’ set off by a variety of enamel infills in pink, purple, red and yellow as well as the more traditional white and black. Now such characters as flamboyant American Christina Kim, Jimin Kang of South Korea, Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and Becky Brewerton of Wales are all sporting a bit of Druh ‘flower power’ both on and off the course. “I have always taken an interest in fashion both on and off the golf course, so it seemed a natural sideline for me to go into after I stopped playing golf,” says Hurd, always smart dresser with well-tailored attire. “I have a particular passion for belts and traveling the world, I have always found it difficult to find stylish, good quality belts. So I

started designing my own and commissioned a local leather craftsman in Thailand to handmake them. So many friends and fellow golfers liked them that I decided it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start a business out of it. “Golf gear is often perceived as rather staid and dull so I wanted to have a bit of fun designing belts and buckles that were a little bit funky, yet stylish, and certainly they have been an instant hit with pro golfers all over the world. And now it is the chance for all those amateurs out there to smarten up their golf look with one of my Druh belts!” Before selling his Druh Belts & Buckles, Hurd was a regular on the Asian Tour after playing on The European Tour on and off for the last 10 years. In his last year of full time play in 2007, he was ranked 49th in the Order of Merit and is yet to claim his first win in the Far East. Druh Belts & Buckles make the perfect present for anyone who has an eye for fashion or simply likes looking good. Available through the internet at www. druhbeltsandbuckles.com at £89 for leather and £159 for snakeskin allows golfers to design their own unique belt by choosing their own belt and buckle combination.

Padraig Harrington Takes on new role Two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington has become the first “Working for Golf” ambassador for the sport’s ruling Royal and Ancient Club. The 39-year-old Dubliner, who at Birkdale three years ago became the first European golfer to make a successful defence of the Claret Jug since James Braid in 1906, will be promoting the work of the St Andrewsbased governing body on his travels. Chief Executive Peter Dawson said: “Padraig is a role model in the game and when he offered his time to support our golf development and rules education activities, we recognised the potential to reach the widest possible audience. “His active involvement in golf’s bid to rejoin the Olympic Games was an important factor in our success in what is a key development for the future growth of the game.”

Harrington, along with Matteo Manassero, Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen, spoke at the bid presentation to the International Olympic Committee two years ago and golf will return to the Games in Brazil in 2016 after an absence of more than a century. In his new role he will coach young people in R&A-funded golf development programmes, appear in Rules of Golf multimedia productions, promote the etiquette of the game, take part in biomechanical equipment testing sessions and support the work of the R&A Foundation. “The R&A has been a constant feature of my development in the game, from playing in boys and amateur events through to winning The Open Championship,” he commented. “I appreciate all the guidance and opportunities they provided along the way.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to give something positive back to the game, particularly in those countries around the world where golf is still in its infancy, introducing boys and girls to golf so they can benefit from the values that the game teaches you. “I am constantly amazed at how much the R&A do for the game worldwide from development to the rules, etiquette and other areas. “The more I learnt the more I wanted to get involved in their work and, given that I play a global schedule, I am well-placed to assist on various projects around the world.” In his first act as an ambassador Harrington announced the R&A’s continued support for grassroots development programmes in Ireland, worth more than £200,000 over the next three years.

GOLF TIPS

Richard McHardy’s Pro Tips. US PGA, GTC Resident Professional If you are having problems with power and accuracy the chances are that it is simply down to the way that you are turning and pivoting in your swing. Firstly, I must stress the importance of solid fundamentals at address, mainly your spine angle and your shoulder angle, what we call your primary and secondary angle. Once these are both in position - providing you turn your shoulders correctly - the club will find the right position at the top of your swing.

Pay particular attention to your right shoulder at address, note where it is and then take your backswing stopping at the top, here you should see that your left shoulder has replaced the position of your right shoulder and your chest and shirt buttons are over your right foot. If you fall short of this position at the top, there will be a monumental lack of power and accuracy within your swing. (You can also use a mirror to practice this drill)

Here we are going to work on a drill which will help you feel and see the correct turn called the “shadow drill”. The idea of turning properly is that we effectively want to replace our right shoulder with our left at the top of our swing. What I want you to do is look at your shadow when swinging the golf club.

Bridgestone & Davis Love III Team Up with Golf 9/12 Season-Long Campaign To Fund Armed Forces Charities, Local First Responders, 9-11 Memorials and Friends of Freedom Charities with $100 for Every Birdie

Bridgestone Golf and the newest member of its TOUR team Davis Love III, recently announced that they’ll be teaming up for a season-long effort to benefit Golf 9/12. Bridgestone Golf will contribute $100 to Golf 9/12 for every birdie that Love cards from the start of the 2011 PGA TOUR season through September 11th—a sum, based on Love’s storied career, that should climb above $30,000.

“Every birdie putt that I stand over in 2011 now takes on additional meaning,” Love emphasized. “I’m happy to play a small part in the mission of the Golf 9/12 organization. Knowing that every birdie I make will help benefit our brave men and women, at home and abroad and will help foster a universal spirit of unity, is added motivation for me! I am truly honored to be part of this organization.”

Golf 9/12 is a brand new initiative that was created in an effort to recapture the collective spirit of unity that swept through the country the day after 9/11/01 (see www.golf912.org). Golf 9/12 encourages people to take part in a global day of golf, connected by a live mobile scoring and social networking application, in which $12 will be added to players’ greens fees to help fund educational programs at the Pentagon Memorial, the 9/11 Memorial and the Flight 93 Memorial. Proceeds will also benefit Armed Forces charities, local first responders and Friends of Freedom charities.

Bridgestone plans to track Love’s success on the course through its website, www.bridgestonegolf.com, and golf fans should check the site to track progress.

According to Dan Murphy, Bridgestone Golf’s Vice President of Marketing, “Bridgestone is thrilled to team with Davis and Golf 9/12. We hope that fans across the globe will cheer on Davis as he tallies birdies that will help Golf 9/12 in their mission of restoring the sense of unity that we all felt in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001.”

Beginning his PGA TOUR season Love will play the new Bridgestone TOUR B330-S golf ball and Bridgestone Golf prototype irons (3-PW). In addition to his new Bridgestone equipment, Love will showcase the Bridgestone brand on his Tour bag, hat and glove. Dan Murphy, Bridgestone Golf’s Vice President of Marketing, expressed clear delight in the company’s Tour line-up for 2011: “What a coup for Bridgestone, to start the new year with an icon such as Davis Love III on our Tour Team. His enthusiasm for our new B330-S ball and our entire brand momentum has infused us with tremendous energy as we enter the 2011 season.”

“With the B330-S, I’m getting more distance out of my driver and long irons and I feel very ready to compete in 2011.” Davis Love III

team’s 2–1 win over the Netherlands in 1974 World Cup final. He continued to play an important role in the national team following his transfer to Valencia in 1978. He spent two seasons at the Spanish club. With over 40,000 members, Borussia Mönchengladbach is the sixth largest club in Germany and one of the best-supported. A large number of these fans made the trip to La Cala and attended the daily training sessions hanging supporters’ club flags around the perimeter of the pitch. They also enjoyed a social night with the squad. Over the next two months La Cala Resort will host training camps for top teams from

Switzerland, Germany, The Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Apart from the mild winter climate, teams are attracted by the extensive range of facilities and the secluded location that is also near Málaga airport and other major transport links. La Cala Resort has developed into the biggest golf and leisure destination in Spain with 3x18 hole courses, a luxury hotel & spa plus a David Leadbetter Academy. The resort is ideally located in the heart of the Costa del Sol between Marbella and Mijas and only 30 minutes from Málaga Airport. Visit www.lacala.com for more information.

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

Travellers Guide Turismo Costa del Sol / www.visitacostadelsol.com

Nobody from any country in the western world will find any fundamental differences between southern Spanish society and the one they left behind. The real difference will probably be the climate, since few western countries outside the Mediterranean basin enjoy such a luxury. The people are, of course, different, and they speak a different language and have different customs, but it is the marked friendliness of the Andalusians, their gastronomy and their traditions – all different from ours - that prompt most people to come here in the first place. The climate on the Iberian Peninsula is generally stable, and as far as meteorological science permits, weather forecasts are reliable. The seasons are fairly predictable, with periods of rain in the Costa del Sol from the end of September to the end of November, and in March and April. Rain and sunshine can alternate on any given day during these periods, and it is rare to have rain falling for more than two or three days at a time.

The beaches on the Costa del Sol are largely sandy, but there are also many pebble beaches where foot-ware is advised. Tourists coming to the Costa del Sol in winter are advised to take umbrellas and raincoats, although such items can be purchased cheaply in local shops. Opening hours for shops tend to change from winter to summer. In general, summer shopping times are from 10 in the morning to 1.30 or 2 in the afternoon, and from 5.30 to 9 at night. In important tourist areas, many shops open later than nine in the morning, and remain open during siesta time and until quite late at night. Spanish law permits supermarkets to open on Sundays in large tourist areas during the summer period. Bars, restaurants and cafeterias have more flexible opening hours, generally in accordance with the requirements of their clients.

Public institutions and banks open only in the mornings, although more essential services may be available in the afternoons as well. The banks close on Saturdays only in summer, while savings banks (cajas de ahorros, to all practical purposes, similar to banks) always close on Saturdays. Health care is comprehensive on the Costa del Sol, with a complete network of hospitals and health centres all over the province of Malaga. Tourists from the European Union should carry the new European health card, which substitutes the old E-111 form. In any case, emergency treatment is immediate, with or without a card, which is necessary only for subsequent paperwork. Public safety in the province of Malaga, as in all of Spain, is in the hands of the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Autonomous Police and the Local or Municipal Police. These police forces work together, and people with problems that require immediate police attention can call on any of them. The easiest way of calling the police is by phoning 091, the National Police number, or calling to any police station in person. English is the second language on the Costa del Sol, and it is spoken to some extent by most people in positions of authority in the province of Malaga, especially in the coastal areas. English is less widely spoken in the interior of the province, except in large towns or tourist areas. Tourism offices usually have personnel capable of communicating in English, French and German. Electrical current in Spain is 220 volts, and the electrical plug used is two-point. Adaptors must thus be used for any electrical appliance that does not use the two-point plug, and transformers must be used with appliances that use a different voltage. It is advisable to take these with you.

All Town Halls have a lost-objects department, although found objects are frequently handed in at the nearest police station. If handbags or wallets have been left in bars or restaurants, it is worth going back to check with the management: they generally keep them for a week or so before handing them over to the police. Given the cosmopolitan character of the Costa del Sol, there are places of worship for most major religions, with Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other minority religious centres on the coast.

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are

the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean

sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards. The New Clubhouse: Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avant-garde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity.

Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional. Opened in 1991, and designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the Old Course is rarely outside the top 5 courses in Spain. The first 9 holes wind through Cork Oaks whilst the back 9

are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play. The San Roque Club is almost unmatched for scenery & elegance. Membership is about exclusivity and the sense of belonging to a family of privileged golfers benefitting from the unique experience the club has to offer. The natural beauty of the area, historic clubhouse, two championship 18 hole courses, equestrian centre, tennis and padel courts, gymnasium and renowned Japanese Restaurant Kamakura make it one of Spain’s top clubs.

Almenara is a truly glorious and unspoilt 27-hole complex divided between Los Lagos (The Lakes), Los Pinos (The Pines) and Los Alcornoques (The Oaks) - each very special for their individuality. The greens are usually very quick, which can require some creative thinking and feel to navigate. Los Lagos is a stunning part of the course and a true test of golf. As you would expect from the name, water comes in to play on four of the holes. Los Pinos begins with a Par 5 leading straight downhill before winding its way through a series of superb holes more representative of a parkland course.

This provides a good contrast to Los Lagos, yet retains the need for excellent course management. Los Alcornoques is perhaps the most exposed to the elements of the three sides, and mixes up a selection of holes to test your nerve and accuracy. Each of the nine holes has it’s own unique character and standout holes - whichever you play, you won’t be disappointed. The tricky par 3, 7th on Los Lagos is a challenge rewarded by its setting - a long iron or wood over a lake to the green which is protected by a bunker at the front. On Los Alcornoques, club selection is vital at both Par 3’s.

La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience.

The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop. Signature Hole: Hole 17. Par 4. A test even to players of the highest level. A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern.

Valderrama

Gibraltar

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships

- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Founded in 1964, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is located on prime golfing land close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. Anyone lucky enough to have played at one of Spain’s foremost members’ clubs will be able to confirm Robert Trent Jones was right to take pride in what is an extraordinarily good design. RCG Sotogrande is often voted to be among the top ten golf courses in Europe – and rightly so. “Sotogrande Old”, as it is called by the locals, boasts mature vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings. The greens

are large with typical Trent Jones contours and the tees are very long, some would say excessively so, but they allow for variations in pin placement and the length of hole. Signature Holes The seventh is widely considered the best on the course. It doglegs to the left with out of bounds on the same side. The drive should be played slightly right of centre. A precise second shot is required to a narrow, well-guarded green. Any shot bouncing on the left edge of the green will kick towards the centre, so favour this side and stay dry!

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a

popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. Facilities Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.

On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

The objective of Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest. The prettiest hole of the course, and one of the prettiest of the Costa del Sol, is the 8th, as acknowledged by the majority of the Club’s

members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace. Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water.

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -

but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens.

It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had

for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Monte Mayor Golf opened in 1989. Designed by José Cancedo, this is a fantastic and challenging Golf Course known as one of the most spectacular on the Costa del Sol. The Golf course is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The valley in which Monte Mayor is laid out clings to the slope of Monte Mayor. The ruins of a 10th Century Moorish Fort crown the summits of Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor’s Fairways are of Bermuda 419. The driving range is breathtaking. Buggies are included with the Green Fee. Starting times every 15 minutes. Amongst the Pros, Alex Cejka, the course record holder (66), practiced a lot

here and enjoyed to work all his shots at Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor is frequently voted into the Top 5 as a golf experience not to be missed. Signature Holes Hole 3: Probably one of the best Par 3’s on the Costa del Sol. Very intimidating, but a good shot slightly on the right of the pin will take you safely home. Hole 4: A drive then a dilemma: do you go for the green - Glory or Misery - or do you lag your second shot on to the intermediary plateau? Then, to go to the green, you will pass across a lovely rustic bridge and discover the glorious waterfall cascading over natural marble stone.

La Quinta Golf Club has 27 holes, divided in 3 courses of 9 holes, which can be combined to have more playing options. Each are integrated in the natural surroundings of the area, from which one can view the Mediterranean sea and the mountains that encircle Marbella. Course A, San Pedro, has open fairways and short yardage, therefore, woods and long irons are mainly used in this course. Course B, Ronda, a fabulous course with narrow fairways and more difficult greens. Surrounded by amazing houses and villas from the Spanish high society, this uphill course leads to the Ronda mountains. Finally, Course

C, Guadaiza, although easier than course B, there are many slopes and a few dog legs. There is also La Quinta Golf Academy equipped with the most modern facilities, such as the digital swing analysis system. The club has been working on the landscaping and course quality together with quality of the services. A good example is the interval between each tee-time, which has been amplified for the comfort and benefit of the players - and the club has also incorporated a Bag Drop service in order to simplify the checkin process from the moment the player arrives to club parking until they are on the first tee.

Magna Marbella is a nine hole, par 29 course including excellent practice facilities and driving range with golf school. Situated on the top of Golf Valley, although Magna is ultimately catering for a market where time is valuble, they have not economised on the quality and services they offer. The clubhouse is elegantly furnished with a cosy atmosphere, and houses the excellent Magna Cafe featuring a terrace that overlooks the golf course, which is usually in immaculate condition. The greens are Magna Marbella’s pride and joy - irrigated with water which is distilled via their own plant. This will ensure

that they are well protected from disease and should be in perfect condition whenever you visit. If you only have time to get a quick round in, enjoying Magna’s nine green jewels could prove an ideal way to spend it. Magna Café has evolved from being a quaint clubhouse bar-restaurant to what is now a quality restaurant exuding Marbella’s typically cosmopolitan ambience. Magna Café has already become an institution with descerning visitors to the Costa del Sol and residents alike. Stylish surroundings, quality creative food & wine, breath-taking views and a ideal location make it a great place to be.

Most visiting golfers have heard of Aloha, it’s one of the best known courses on the Costa del Sol. Like many of the other older ones it has seen substantial improvements in recent years, particularly the replanting of the fairways and a general upgrading of the clubhouse and changing rooms. Overall there’s a wide mix of holes, characterised by mostly wide fairways although you’ll have big problems if you stray either side of them. All the holes have highly individual, apt names. The second, for instance, is called ‘Uresandi’, the Basque word for a lot of water - and three lakes

certainly is a lot of water. The eleventh is Las Aguilas (Eagles) as the hole is so close to the mountain that twitchers may catch sight of one. Although the club is private, visitors are welcome all year. It’s advisable to telephone in advance - this course is very popular. Hole 2. This picturesque par 4 is just one of the highlights designed by the late Javier Arana. Many will choose to play an iron from the tee for position and take their chances for a birdie on the subtle contours of the green. From the elevated tee, water impedes the narrow landing area of the fairway on the right, with a bunker protecting the green at the front.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales

Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a

good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.

The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.

The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Cabopino Golf

Marbella

Cabopino Golf is situated on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little marina of Cabopino. The course was designed by Juan Ligues Creus. The layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf we find the excellent facilities of the golf Academy and driving range. The driving range has a capacity for 60 players, with a depth of 250 mts, and 160 mts, wide distance markers, bunkers,

and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practise session. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 200m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.

Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green.Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed.

This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse. Miraflores Golf Restaurant: In the heart of the Course, diners enjoy spectacular views from the terrace. Renowned for the quality of its food, it is a must place to visit. Open 365 days a year to members and non-members, serving lunch and dinner. The delicious lunch menu is good value and our gourmet dinner and selection of wines is excellent. An ideal place for an intimate dinner, or for entertaining friends or colleagues.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied

tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,

well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy

La Cala Resort

In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is

over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” Campo Europa The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,

even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging

course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and

beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Perched in the hills inland from La Cala de Mijas, with panoramic views over Fuengirola to the East and Mijas to the West lies the delightful new 9 hole course of Cerrado del Aguila. With a superb driving range and practice area and a delightful modern clubhouse you will feel at ease as soon as you arrive. The holes all have generous fairways that are in superb condition, as are all of the greens and tees. There are several small lakes on the course that are brought into play on a number of the holes, and they too are all very impressive to look at, bordered neatly by large rocks. The course is not overly long at 5,504 metres off

Aymerich Golf Center Benalmádena This superb nine hole pitch & putt course with two-tier driving range has recently been added to the Aymerich Golf Management portfolio. Holes range from just 46 meters to 100 meters, but plenty of hazards and interesting features make it a fun layout. Aymerich are keen to encourage current players and visitors to take their golfing experience to the next level as well as giving them confidence to progress from the nine hole to full eighteen at other Aymerich courses.

technique. Adults and young golfers who are just starting out will be given all the help they need to get the most out of their game. Signature Holes Hole 7. Par 3. 59m. A hole that demands accuracy due to the three bunkers surrounding the green. Hole 8. Par 3. 100m. The longest and most complicated hole on the course, with views to the sea, and a waterfall that crosses the left of the hole, making the green very narrow. Hole 9. Par 3. 77m. The green is well defended by three bunkers to the right and a lake to the left. The fairly flat green shouldn’t cause too many complications.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.

The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best

courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.

The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport.

An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new

The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

Signature Holes If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.

From it’s inauguration in August 2006, the spectacular 18 hole TPC course at Santa Clara Golf in Granada has developed into one of the best in the Granada region. Designed by D. Enrique Canales and located in Otura, less than 10 minutes from Granada City centre, the course nestles in the foothills of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountain range. Created with great respect for the natural environment, the course is one of the longest in Andalucia and will challenge players of all standards. The front 9 with its bunkers, “barrancos” and ‘the hill’ is very different from the back 9 which has some long

undulating fairways, a lake and a few well placed trees to contend with - altogether making for an interesting and at times, intriguing game of golf. Try for a birdie on the par 4 6th hole. You never know your luck! Santa Clara boasts a magnificent Clubhouse with a restaurant overlooking the back 9, offering wonderful views of the snow capped mountains from it’s terrace. History, Art & Culture

The province of Cadiz is the southernmost of the Iberian Peninsula . It has a perimeter of 586 Km, 260 of which are coastline. It has a surface area of 7,385 Km, divided up into 44 municipal areas. Its population totals just over one million, with the density being just over the national average.

The province played an important role in the discovery and colonization of America during the 15th century. Christopher Columbus and other famous sailors set sail from these ports on their voyages to the New Continent. The 18th century, Cadiz’s “Golden Century” was dominated by the growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character and introducing new liberal ideas and opening the door for democracy which came to fruition with the drafting of the constitution in 1812. The province of Cadiz is an exceptional and unique area, whose qualities will delight those people seeking tourism that reflects true cultural, festive and ecological values, together with the authentic and essentially Andalusian customs and monuments.

Cadiz has an ancient history. The Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than three thousand years ago. It was here that they built the old ”Gadir” (Cadiz ) around 1,100 B.C., making it the oldest capital in the West. The Romans and the Visigoths also left their marks here. After 711, it was ruled by the Muslims until Alfonso X “The Wise” reconquered it in the middle of the 13th century and it became part of the Kingdom of Castilla.

Many cultures have left their mark throughout Cadiz ‘s long history. Examples of this are the “Tajo de las Figuras” cave paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz ‘s Museum; the Roman remains of “Baelo Claudia” at Tarifa, and the “Carteia” at San Roque. The province has over 30 castles and fortresses, many of which are in a good state of repair. In the field of religious art, the province also boasts an extraordinary collection of monuments. Good examples of this are the Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz and Jerez. As far as paintings are concerned, examples of works by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many of the province’s churches and museums.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.

The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic

Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.

Novo Sancti Petri is an inviting 54 hole golf resort situated on the coast by La Barrosa beach. Thanks to its mild climate, the area has become an ideal all year round holiday destination for sports lovers, especially golfers. The 3 golf courses are set in an area of 170 hectares surrounded by an attractive resort. Numerous water hazards, pine, cork and olive trees, juniper and carob bushes, greens heavily guarded with bunkers, and the Atlantic sea breeze all combine to ensure your game will be both challenging and enjoyable. The two 18 hole golf courses (A & B) “Novo Sancti Petri” were designed by world famous Spanish golf professional Severiano Ballesteros,

whilst “Campano”, situated 8 km from the beach was designed by internationally renowned golf architect Bryan Griffiths. Course A: “Mar-Pinos” is made up of four Par 3´s, 10 Par 4´s and 4 Par 5´s. The first 9 have wide fairways & 3 water hazards. The second 9 are set in amongst the pine trees. Course B: “Centro” is made up of six Par 3´s, six Par 4´s and six Par 5´s. The first 9 holes are flat, with a lake between holes 5, 8 and 9. Course C: “Campano”. The first 9 holes are Parkland style, requiring long and straight shots. The back nine has three large lakes and large undulating greens.
