Featured Course Santa María Golf & Country Club

Santa María Golf & Country Club, Marbella

Santa María Golf is not only regarded as one of the most magnificent courses on the Costa del Sol, but also one of the most playable. It boasts an 18-hole course situated alongside a delightful pinewood and oak forest, with views over the Mediterranean.

A few years ago, a well known exryder cup placer and now famous golf TV commentator wrote: “Here at Santa Maria Golf and Country Club I’m looking forward to watching and listening to people, admiring the views and enjoying the beauty and tranquillity without the hassle of trying to hole that three-footer out for lunch with appropriate wines. This really is a delight. The trees, the comfort, even the gentility which is something missing in life today. To be here and to enjoy it will be something very special. There are so many things to do and they all marry in beautifully – The Ryder Room, The Cotton Bar, the tennis and the bowls. I was brought up in a golfing atmosphere and one of the things I miss is the club life. Most professionals playing tournament golf today have no experience of club life. When I was

winning tournaments I was professional at Parkstone overlooking Poole harbour. And one had to face the members. To be truthful, one did not love them all. If you had done badly you always bumped into the wrong person. “Oh, I see you didn’t do very well…” They forgot they times you did 68 and only remembered when you did 79. But that was all part of learning and growing up and listening to the tales and watching all the little nuances that went on in the clubhouse. The mild flirtation… the arguments with the steward… the fiery secretary… the slightly dozy golf pro. The green-keeper who knew every blade of grass on the course but did not have a mass of diplomas to prove that he knew his job. All those things seemed to fit into place so wonderfully well. Those days, many of those days are gone. But I think here at the Santa Maria Golf and Country Club there is an opportunity of recreating that lovely world, which some people nowadays sadly think is gone. It is called style.

Santa Maria to me personifies that very word – “style”. Yes, you guessed right, it was Peter Alliss, one of the world’s best ambassadors for our game of golf. A visit to Santa Maria Golf will confirm those words and you will find the club to be one of the friendliest on the coast. “Santa María” prides itself on being one of the friendliest international clubs on the coast and the existing membership which is currently held to about 350 members is made up of 14 different nationalities. Set amidst unparallel beauty of the Andalucian countryside, the course traces the contours of two valleys in which the natural vegetation, streams and four lakes form natural hazards. The course is not long but full of interest and with each hole having it’s own character. Many of the tees are elevated and the views from the 10th hole to the 16th are breathtaking on a fine day.”

Featured Course Santa María Golf & Country Club

Hole 1 : “The Lakes” is a relatively short and straightforward par 4. The Tee shot has to clear a lake, however, and a deep water hazard borders the left side of a fairway which is sufficiently wide. Three bunkers guard a large, slightly sloping green. Hole 2 : “The Cypresses” is a par 5. Measuring 460 mtrs from the men’s forward medal tee. You will drive towards the sea keeping to the left of the fairway. The second shot will be either a safe mid-iron or a high fairway wood over a diagonal water course to a position somewhere short of the green. Trouble is in the form of a lateral water hazard and a bunker, both on the left approach to a generous green. Hole 3 : “The Hillock” is a seemingly uncomplicated par four measuring 344 mtrs. A good drive must reach the level ground having cleared a sharp rise in the first part of the fairway. Two large bunkers protect the front of a green possessing many subtle borrows. Hole 4 : “The Brook” is an apparently innocuous par four of only 250 mtrs. Has blemished many medal cards. A nerveless, straight drive is required to avoid a rocky escarpment on the right and the deep lateral water hazard on the left. A short iron will find the two level plateau green. Hole 5 : “The Hillside” is another good test. Par four and extending to 294 mtrs., the dangers lie in the out of bounds gulley on the right and bunkers positioned on the right of the fairway and two closely guarding the approach to the green. The best way to play this hole is to drive to the right hand side of the fairway and then to hit a high fading shot into the pin. The green is fast and slopes from the back towards the front. Hole 6 : “The Oleanders” The par four sixth hole is the first of our newer holes. At 304 mtrs. It is not the most demanding. A slightly ascending, wide fairway describes a slight dog-leg to the left. A deep water hazard on the left hand side should not come into play. Hole 7 : “The Eualyptuses” is reached by passing under the road tunnel. Turning to the left we find the competition tees for the seventh hole. The yellow tee on this long par three presents a drive of 194 mtrs. Not surprisingly, not all golfers will reach the putting surface in one shot. For those who can, a tee shot fired down the right hand side with draw will avoid the foremost of the three bunkers surrounding the ample green.

Hole 8 : “Mountain View” is the second of the par five’s. This 459 mtrs. three shot hole is stroke index two and is formed into a gentle dog-leg to the right. It is perhaps here that, after a long straight drive, you will take a moment to look around and enjoy the sheer beauty of the setting and to appreciate the quiet tranquillity. A second wood shot played safely between the line of the water hazard on the left and the lake to the right will open up the large green to a fairly long approach shot. Hole 9 : “The Lagoon” is 302 mtrs. From the competition tee and as you would expect carries a par of four. The gently ascending fairway is, however, preceded by a large and unforgiving lake in front of the teeing grounds. Although the carry required is only some 130 mtrs., a “head down” steady swing is important. An approach with a medium iron will make the green, which is bunkered only at the back. Hole 10 : “The Pit” is a par three measuring 141 mtrs. No problem with distance but an

ugly slice will find all sorts of trouble. The green is well bunkered especially on the right side. Many will be relieved to finish in sand when the alternatives are seen. Hole 11 : “The Cascade” A spectacular par four from an elevated tee commences with a driver or three wood hit down to the fairway below. Very long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or the adjacent bunker. A short iron second to the green will have to negotiate encompassing trees, and a small lake fed by an attractive waterfall to the right. Hole 12 : “View Point” is another thought provoking par three. Once again just 147 mtrs, the largely cerebral obstacle presented by the large lake alongside the line of approach must be dealt with. The generous green is bordered by bunkers but even these may not prevent an overhit or sliced tee shot ending in trouble. Hole 13 : “The Oaks” is prophetically numbered. A well hit drive will clear the

009

Featured Course Santa María Golf & Country Club

valley in front of the tee and will cover a good part of the 466 mtrs. Leaving a choice, according to the ability of the player, of either a safe iron to the right hand side of the fairway, or an aggressive wood shot over the corner of the dog-leg into a position much nearer to the green. At any event, the water hazard bounding the right side of the fairway must be avoided. The green is guarded by two large bunkers. Hole 14 : “The Pines” is reached by returning through the road tunnel and continuing to the left. From a high tee position the fairway stretches down towards the coast tracing a benign dog-leg to the right. A good drive down the left hand side will set up a downhill second shot with a wood or iron to a sheltered cockpit green. The line of approach is to the right of the oak tree at the left front of an amiable green. In all a very pleasant par four of 368 mtrs. Hole 15 : “The Corner” sees us back on the

original part of the golf course and is the old sixth hole. An inviting par three of 154 mtrs. It is of classic design. A well executed shot from a high tee position will avoid the large, deep bunkers set at the front left and left rear of the green. A wayward drive to the right may be gathered by the slope and end up near to the green or, if extreme, finish out of bounds. Hole 16 : “The Olives” is a true par four. The length of 371 mtrs. seems more when played into the prevailing south west wind. The right to left sloping fairway has a large bunker to the left and a high rocky hillside dotted with olive trees on the right side. The approach to a long, three tiered green must be steered clear of a deep bunker on the left side. Hole 17 : “The Bridge” This final short hole is straightforward enough and measures 151 mtrs. The green is on a higher level than the tee and often hides the affect of a sea breeze. Take extra club on this hole and avoid the left front bunker at all costs.

Hole 18 : “The Clubhouse” The eighteenth is a demanding par four of 345 mtrs. Once a good straight drive finds the fairway a long or medium iron will capture the green. The reason that the last hole has earned it’s low stroke index is found in the tee shot. The view from the medal tee is rather intimidating. To the immediate front and all along the left side is a tree lined water hazard. To the right, more trees and out of bounds lining a high bank. In our game, which I hope that you enjoyed, we have both hit two immaculate shots to the green and halved the match by sinking two long, curving putts. Lee Westwood claims his first tour title in 2 years In October, the host venue of the Portugal Masters, the Oceânico Victoria course delivered a sensational setting for the third consecutive year. The course which has become accustomed to praise played the perfect host and was showered with positive comments by the players - and it was fitting that the award winning course would see Oceânico ambassador Lee Westwood claim his first tour title in 2 years. The Algarve has become a second home for the English Ryder Cup star, who began the week in relaxed mood twenty minutes down the road at the Oceânico Amendoeira Resort in a unique floodlit par 3 challenge taking on Ireland as captain of the Rest of the World team. Westwood, who is a home owner at the stunning resort, saw off challenges from Italian Francesco Molinari and fellow Oceânico ambassador Padraig Harrington. A birdie at the par 5 17th propelled Westwood into the lead which he would not relinquish. In an interview afterwards Westwood was rich in praise for the Oceânico Group. “It is great to have a company like Oceânico behind this event. They are one of my sponsors and have shown a great commitment to golf on many levels. It is a great place to come and I know everyone out here on tour really appreciates their investment with Tourismo de Portugal in creating an event of this caliber.” The Oceânico Group’s investment spans all levels of golf. From the elite to grass roots golf, the company responsible for 8 courses in Portugal is unsurpassed in commitment to golf in Portugal and Europe. With seven of its courses located in the Algarve, Oceânico has taken quality and standard of golf to a whole new level in this region. “Lee’s win is a great thrill for us all here. He has been an outstanding Oceânico ambassador and we are over the moon that he has taken this year’s title. It is good for golf in Portugal and Europe when we see some of the world’s best golfers do

battle down the last few holes on Sunday afternoon. This is what we committed to achieving with our partners Tourismo de Portugal and the European Tour and this year has been as good as it gets,” commented Gerry Fagan, Director Oceânico Group. With the Race to Dubai finale nearing, Westwood has now taken top spot. One of the tours richest purses brought with it an impressive field, including Oceânico ambassadors Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen, Darren Clarke as well as Michael Campbell and Justin Rose. Carl Mason Champion at the Benahavís Senior Masters, La Quinta Carl Mason took a step closer to European Senior Tour golf history when he beat Scotland’s Gordon Brand Jnr at the second play-off hole to claim the Benahavis Senior Masters presented by ISPS in Spain. The victory, at the La Quinta Golf and Country Club, was the 56 year old Englishman’s 22nd Senior Tour title, a win which moves him within only one of the all-time record of 23 titles held by his fellow Englishman, Tommy Horton. Mason and Brand Jnr finished on seven under par 206 at the sunkissed Marbella venue after respective closing rounds of 68, Mason holing from 15 feet on the final green to book his place in the play-off, a birdie three overnight leader Ross Drummond could not repeat in the final group, seeing the 52 year old Scot take third place on his own on six under par 207. Into extra holes, Brand Jnr, seeking his first Senior Tour title since turning 50 last August, missed a chance from ten feet at the first time of asking on the 18th green, but Mason did not when a chance from 25 feet presented itself on their return moments later. “This is just great, I am absolutely delighted to have won, even more so for the fact that I didn’t really expect it today,” said Mason. “Nothing much was happening for me on the front nine and, at that point, I was really just thinking of trying to consolidate my position and finish as best I could. “Then, all of a sudden, things started to happen, I make a couple of birdies and started hitting a few good shots and other things went my way elsewhere and, before you know it, I’ve won. Amazing. As for getting close to Tommy’s record, I’m getting there. If I keep playing well and keep going then I might have a chance to do it – it would be a great achievement to do so.” The win, Mason’s second of the season following his success in The De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall in June, also gives the Englishman a realistic chance of picking up the John Jacobs Trophy for topping the Seniors Tour Order of Merit at the end of the season.

Mason has already experienced that honour on three occasions – in 2003, 2004 and 2007 – and is now up to fourth place on the Order of Merit with €134,292, only €27,327 behind leader Ian Woosnam of Wales who did not compete in Marbella. With some €64,000 on offer to the winner of the final European Senior Tour event of the season – the OKI Castellón Senior Tour Championship in Spain in November – Mason, and indeed second placed Glenn Ralph of England and third placed Sam

Torrance of Scotland who finished tied sixth and tied 32nd respectively at La Quinta, all have genuine claims to the prize. “The John Jacobs Trophy would be a lovely way to end the season and you never know, if I get a little bit of luck, it might happen,” said Mason. “Strange things happen in this game as you saw today with my victory so you never know. It promises to be an exciting end to the season.” For more info visit: www.europeantour.com

Azahara Muñoz Claims victory at the Madrid Ladies Masters At only 21 years of age, and having turned professional just two weeks previously, Azahara Muñoz won the Madrid Ladies Masters on her professional debut at the beginning of last month. A final round of 64, nine under par, earned Azahara a sudden death play off with Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist. The pair re-played the 470 yard par-five 18th and Muñoz defeated Nordqvist with an eagle when she hit a six-iron to 20 feet from 158 yards and rolled in the putt. “I can’t believe I won. It’s like a dream come true,” said Muñoz. “This is just the beginning. I’m going to keep on practising and trying to get better.” Yet another Spanish product of a North American golfing education Azahara’s other accomplishments whilst still an amateur include being runner-up at the 2008 U. S. Women’s Amateur championship, winner of

the Ladies British Amateur Championship in 2009, as well as being in the Spanish team at the Women’s World Amateur event, tying for third in the world. Azahara completed a more than good month by also winning the Banesto Woman’s Tour in Barcelona, with a four under par round of 66. Only one round was played however due to the bad weather conditions. In the middle of the month the Carta Sì Ladies Italian Open was one by Norway’s Marianne Skarpnord. In yet another ladies tournament play-off she beat Britain’s Laura Davies at the third hole. Third in the competition was Spaniard Tania Elosegiu, ten under par for the tournament, two shots behind Skarpnord and Davies. After Italy all eyes will be focused on the Ladies European Tour as it moves to Asia. www.ladieseuropeantour.com

Estepona Golf : 20 Years On There once was a man with a dream, and on the strength of that dream he bought a hillside in southern Spain. All might have been well if the dream had run to form but there came a time when it all looked certain to end in tears. However this story has a happy ending and, if you are sitting comfortably, all will be revealed. The man at the centre of our story was David Leader, a publisher whose passion in life was golf. Sadly David died five years ago, but not before he had seen his lifelong dream turned into a stunning success, largely by the efforts of his son Rory. As a businessman David Leader enjoyed a large measure of success. His Londonbased magazine company prospered, and when he sold it in 1985 he was free to embark on his dream project to build and run a golf course in Spain.

His choice of site was not an obvious one, not at the time at least. Although close to the main road – the old N340 – it was a long way from the ‘action’ in Marbella. Furthermore the land was devoid of any kind of infrastructure – no buildings to speak of, no services, no roads, not even paths - just wild uncultivated campo, a million square metres of it (about 250 acres). Even to a golf fanatic like David Leader, it must have seemed a bit of a gamble to build a course from scratch, where no course had gone before, and to establish a demand. But that was how Estepona Golf began. Situated a few kilometers to the west of Estepona town, it is now one of the best known courses along Malaga’s southern seaboard. Despite his obvious zeal for the project, David Leader’s family was sceptical from the start. Rory says it was very nearly the golf course that never was.

However the Club opened in 1989 and for a time things went well. It started modestly enough, the original clubhouse being a timber ‘shack’ - but it quickly attracted a loyal following. Then in the 1990’s a severe drought hit the region and golf courses were hit hard. Suddenly the business was struggling. To make matters worse, in 1994 David had to return to the UK. It was then that Rory decided that if the course was to succeed as a business, there would have to be changes. In taking charge of the management he put the focus firmly on clients, be they seasonal visitors or year-round regulars. The course and its facilities were improved, an architectdesigned clubhouse was commissioned, and the bar and restaurant up-graded with the appointment of a top flight chef. Most of all, a competitive pricing policy put Estepona Golf in a class of its own.

David Leader : A family tribute

“The Campo” in its early stages of development Today Estepona Golf has an enviable reputation - and not just among golfers. The restaurant is a venue for many locals, a meeting point and a place for special lunches and suppers. This November Estepona Golf is celebrating its 20th year in business. A month-long list of fixtures includes a fun day tournament, the Estepona Masters (Stroke Play) championship and a new David Leader Trophy match – eleven tournaments in all for players of all abilities with wonderful prizes. The management and staff at Estepona Golf share the family’s pride in its achievements. Its success is already legendary - and the two main architects of that success are David Leader and his son Rory. Next month Rory and his wife Amanda look forward to welcoming you to one of their celebratory events. Don’t miss it! For full details turn to the Estepona Golf Guide page in this issue.

The original clubhouse was just a timber ‘shack’

The new clubhouse in all its glory

His son, Rory: “Estepona Golf was very nearly the golf course that never was. Although it was Dad’s dream, I remember doing my best to talk him out of it, but he wouldn’t have it. I don’t think it was any great secret that he just wanted to play it, not run it, but it gave me the opportunity to spend a great deal of quality time with him. Much of the work we all do now, to build on his dream, is in his memory. I’ve never met a man quite like him, nor do I think I ever will.” His son, Phil: “It was an exciting time watching Dad transform a barren piece of land into a golf course. He didn’t speak much Spanish then and was at times ill-advised by various middle-men. But all he could see was the end result. We miss him terribly but he has a legacy we’re all so proud of.” His son, Simon: “It [the site chosen for the golf course] was felt by many to be too remote, that the spread of development and tourism would never seriously reach that far down the coast. When I look back at it I am struck by just how barren the site was. It was basically scrubland. To see now how green and verdant Estepona Golf is and how a small community has seemingly sprung out of nothing, is to see Dad’s vision come to life. He was rightly proud of it and I’ll always be proud of him. Estepona Golf is his living legacy, his romantic dream come to life and to see it is to remember him.” His two daughters, Yasmin and Sam: “We remember we flew to Spain in May 1985. We drove to Estepona, where a few kilometres outside town we took a walk over a large plot of overgrown, slightly hilly land that my father had bought. It was at this point he told us about his vision for his golf course. There were setbacks and financial problems but through our father’s persistence, hard work and support of his wife, he saw his dream turn into a reality.” Yasmin: “I have many memories, from preparing breakfast for 30-plus players before a big tournament, to the stray animals my mother ‘adopted’, particularly Beaky, the duck with a malformed beak. Estepona Golf was a great source of pride to my father. As it celebrates its anniversary, I believe it’s a testament to my father’s vision that others continue to enjoy it as much as he did.” Estepona Golf Arroyo Vaquero, Apartado 532, Estepona. CG15 wedges the most advanced Cleveland Golf wedge in almost a decade The new Cleveland CG15 wedges feature the most advanced wedge technology Cleveland Golf has introduced in almost a decade. The secret lies in the combination of a Laser milled face and Zip grooves that offer the ultimate control with the highest spin level ever reached in a Cleveland Golf wedge. Using the precision accuracy of a laser, four perfectly calibrated texture lines are milled between each groove, exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This breakthrough surface roughness application optimises ball-to-face friction and maximises spin under The Rules of Golf*. “The precision of the laser allows us to exactly calibrate the depth/geometry of the laser markings,” said Scott Carlyle, Cleveland Golf’s Global Business Unit Leader for wedges.

“We adjusted the settings to get right to the limit of the USGA & R&A rules for surface roughness that states that the maximum ‘peak trough’ value on the surface roughness can be 0.001. We consistently mark it about 0.0008 – 0.0009 – right at the limit.” The larger ZIP groove volume (25% larger than conventional grooves) channels the most debris possible out of the groove at impact to improve contact and maximise spin. “As the face of the wedge naturally wears, the Laser Milled technology keeps roughness longer,” added Carlyle. “This provides friction and grip between the face and the golf ball.” The CG15 wedge is available in three distinct finishes: Chrome, Black Pearl and Oil Quench. There is also a Dynamic Sole Grind version available only in Oil Quench finish with multiple bounce options.

Launcher DST Driver the lightest most powerful driver in golf The new Cleveland Launcher DST driver may look like a fairly conventional club, but it’s hiding a big technology secret… the lightest driver in golf! The clubweight is just 292 grams – that’s 25 grams lighter than standard drivers, which usually weigh in around the 317 grams mark. The lighter the clubweight, the faster the clubhead speed and that equals greater overall distance (a three to 10 yard gain). At only a half millimetre in thickness, the new Launcher crown is the thinnest possible, which also helps move every bit of potential weight low and deep in the clubhead to optimise launch conditions and maximise distance. The variable face thickness of the driver Launcher DST allows a higher C.O.R. on off-centre hits for a higher

trampoline effect and more ball speed and distance on miss hits shots. Moreover nine grams of weight is removed from the face and repositioned low & deep in the club head to create a lower, deeper centre of gravity (CG) for a better launch angle, higher MOI and straighter, longer drives. In addition to the head design, the DST is fitted with a longer, lighter Mitsubishi Diamana shaft. This too contributes to the higher swing speeds and additional distance golfers can expect. All of this technology is packed inside a club that boasts those sought-after traditional great looks – a classic pear shaped head, a jet-black crown with no alignment aid, a square to open face angle that sits perfectly behind the ball and a classic sole design.

Golf Approved for 2016 Olympics On Vote By International Olympic Committee Membership After an absence of more than a century, golf will return as an Olympic sport in 2016 and 2020 along with rugby sevens following their approval by the International Olympic Committee membership during the IOC’s 121st Session. They will be part of the Olympic Program in Rio de Janeiro, which last week was selected as the host city for the 2016 Games by the IOC. Golf was last an Olympic sport at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, Mo., when the United States and Canada were the only two competing countries. “We are elated that the IOC membership has accepted golf as an Olympic sport, and look forward to seeing the world’s best golfers compete for gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” said Ty Votaw, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation Olympic Golf Committee, which has coordinated golf’s Olympic bid. “We thank the IOC for its support, and also congratulate rugby sevens for its inclusion in the 2016 Games.”

Votaw and Peter Dawson, chief executive of The R&A and joint secretary of the International Golf Federation, were accompanied by professionals Padraig Harrington of Ireland, Michelle Wie of the United States and Suzann Pettersen of Norway, as well as 16-year-old (British) Amateur Champion Matteo Manassero of Italy, for a final presentation to the IOC prior to the vote. “We are extremely grateful that Padraig, Michelle, Suzann and Matteo were able to join us to help communicate the genuine interest world-class players of all ages share in golf becoming an Olympic sport,” Dawson said. Golf and rugby sevens were recommended for the Olympic Program by the IOC Executive Board in August following an extensive review process involving seven sports that were vying to be added to the 2016 Olympic Games. Although they emerged as the finalists, both sports still required final approval Friday by a majority of votes cast by the members of the IOC.

“In addition to those golfers who will have an opportunity to compete as Olympic athletes, we are excited for the national golf federations that will reap the benefits from today’s decision in terms of growth and support within their countries,” Dawson said. “This is a very significant day for golf.” “We strongly believed that golf deserved to be added to the Olympic Program and felt that we presented a compelling case to the IOC,” Votaw said. “We have received unprecedented support from international golf organizations throughout this process, as well as from the world’s top-ranked men and women players, which was critical to our success. We also stressed the universal nature of golf, with 60 million people playing the sport in more than 120 countries.” Based on player feedback, the IGF has proposed a format of 72-hole individual stroke play for both men and women. In case of a tie for either first, second or third place, a three-hole playoff is recommended to determine the medal winner(s). The IGF also has recommended an Olympic field of 60 players for each of the men’s and women’s competition, using the Official World Golf Rankings as a method of determining eligibility. The top-15 world-ranked players would be eligible for the Olympics, regardless of the number of players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players would be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15. Current world rankings from both the men’s and women’s games show that at least 30 countries would be represented in both the men’s and women’s competitions, from all continents, under this proposal.

Marbella Golf Celebrate 18 Holes Restored

European Tour Race To Dubai Rankings as of 29th October 2009

A large attendance, perfect weather and a well-organised Shotgun Start Competition greeted those playing the Opening Day Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Snr - Marbella Golf & Country Club recently. With redesigned holes, new holes, re-routing of the course, reversing of old holes, new tees, new bunkers and new greens – the field of just under 100 golfers were intrigued to find out what was instore for them during the day. A mix of old with the new - the new design, sculpted by Jones’ pupils, no doubt under his watchful eye from above!? David Steele and Craig Cooke have worked tirelessly over the last 6 months to bring this golf course from its knees to take its place amongst Marbella’s top golf courses once again. The pair who now form the senior management team as Joint General Managers at the complex, worked with a close knit team under the consultancy of Cabell B. Robinson to ensure the course was in keeping with its original design. David was very positive, excited, but realistic at his prize presentation address when advising “we trust you enjoyed the changes to the course, we realise it will need time to develop and mature, but we are moving forward and our aim in the short term is to make the course into one of the best the coast has to offer” Indeed the changes were well received by those who attended the “tapas & drinks” prize presentation in the fabulous clubhouse

afterwards, the general theme seemed to be “the one to watch in 2010”. Whilst thanking all his staff and in particular Craig and his team, David added “We have acknowledged that October was probably a little too soon to have the course firing on all cylinders, but as Craig and his team continue to improve the course week on week – very soon we will realise the high quality product we have to offer golfers from all over”. Plans are in place for a new range of buggys and early next year a quality GPS system will be installed to provide the type of on course service that nowadays golfers expect. This is a real sleeping giant of a course, and the team at Marbella Golf expect to create a “must see, must play” message over the coming months as more and more golfers play and critique the new layout. The Opening Day followed the previous weeks Captains Day on the new layout, where new Captain John Drinkwater “Drove In” – the members were also very excited about the 18 holes. Captain Drinkwater advised at the Opening Event “I endorse everything David has said today, we have a quality course to go with our wonderful clubhouse now – we are all motivated to move the club forward” More plans and initiatives are expected to be announced by the end of this year – we suggest you go and see for yourself and find out whats happening at Marbella Golf Country Club.

Travellers Guide Turismo Costa del Sol / www.visitacostadelsol.com

Nobody from any country in the western world will find any fundamental differences between southern Spanish society and the one they left behind. The real difference will probably be the climate, since few western countries outside the Mediterranean basin enjoy such a luxury. The people are, of course, different, and they speak a different language and have different customs, but it is the marked friendliness of the Andalusians, their gastronomy and their traditions – all different from ours - that prompt most people to come here in the first place. The climate on the Iberian Peninsula is generally stable, and as far as meteorological science permits, weather forecasts are reliable. The seasons are fairly predictable, with periods of rain in the Costa del Sol from the end of September to the end of November, and in March and April. Rain and sunshine can alternate on any given day during these periods, and it is rare to have rain falling for more than two or three days at a time.

The beaches on the Costa del Sol are largely sandy, but there are also many pebble beaches where foot-ware is advised. Tourists coming to the Costa del Sol in winter are advised to take umbrellas and raincoats, although such items can be purchased cheaply in local shops. Opening hours for shops tend to change from winter to summer. In general, summer shopping times are from 10 in the morning to 1.30 or 2 in the afternoon, and from 5.30 to 9 at night. In important tourist areas, many shops open later than nine in the morning, and remain open during siesta time and until quite late at night. Spanish law permits supermarkets to open on Sundays in large tourist areas during the summer period. Bars, restaurants and cafeterias have more flexible opening hours, generally in accordance with the requirements of their clients.

Public institutions and banks open only in the mornings, although more essential services may be available in the afternoons as well. The banks close on Saturdays only in summer, while savings banks (cajas de ahorros, to all practical purposes, similar to banks) always close on Saturdays. Health care is comprehensive on the Costa del Sol, with a complete network of hospitals and health centres all over the province of Malaga. Tourists from the European Union should carry the new European health card, which substitutes the old E-111 form. In any case, emergency treatment is immediate, with or without a card, which is necessary only for subsequent paperwork. Public safety in the province of Malaga, as in all of Spain, is in the hands of the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Autonomous Police and the Local or Municipal Police. These police forces work together, and people with problems that require immediate police attention can call on any of them. The easiest way of calling the police is by phoning 091, the National Police number, or calling to any police station in person. English is the second language on the Costa del Sol, and it is spoken to some extent by most people in positions of authority in the province of Malaga, especially in the coastal areas. English is less widely spoken in the interior of the province, except in large towns or tourist areas. Tourism offices usually have personnel capable of communicating in English, French and German. Electrical current in Spain is 220 volts, and the electrical plug used is two-point. Adaptors must thus be used for any electrical appliance that does not use the two-point plug, and transformers must be used with appliances that use a different voltage. It is advisable to take these with you.

All Town Halls have a lost-objects department, although found objects are frequently handed in at the nearest police station. If handbags or wallets have been left in bars or restaurants, it is worth going back to check with the management: they generally keep them for a week or so before handing them over to the police. Given the cosmopolitan character of the Costa del Sol, there are places of worship for most major religions, with Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other minority religious centres on the coast. The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually any location on the course.

The New Clubhouse Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avantgarde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity. Elements from local Andalusian architecture create a pleasant space for visitors to enjoy both the scenery and tasty local cuisine.

Golf Academy & Driving Range Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area. The range is 110 m wide, and a length of 310 m caters for the longest of hitters.

Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. Thanks to Dave Thomas, the famous golf course designer, this golf course is now the best setting for any type of golf championship. The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards.

Designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros the New Course opened in 2003, since then it has blossomed into a mature and well respected course which can hold court with the best of them in the area. Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years – the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. The design depicts a links course in many holes and it also has many unique Dye features which is rare for a European course.

Kamakura Restaurant & Deluxe Take Away. Probably the best Japanese restaurant in Spain. Its superb cuisine is only surpassed by the authentic Japanese architecture. Bar Jerez. A meeting point for, members and visitors alike, who may enjoy a morning coffee, an afternoon snack or an evening drink on the terrace which looks on to the Old Course.

It is a challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers, but with five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course, it is also possible for higher handicap players to enjoy. Nevertheless, the course is designed to reward canny tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard four of the greens, also defended by more than 100 bunkers.

Almenara is a truly glorious and unspoilt 27-hole complex divided between Los Lagos (The Lakes), Los Pinos (The Pines) and Los Alcornoques (The Oaks) - each very special for their individuality. The greens are usually very quick, which can require some creative thinking and feel to navigate. Los Lagos is a stunning part of the course and a true test of golf. As you would expect from the name, water comes in to play on four of the holes. Los Pinos begins with a Par 5 leading straight downhill before winding its way through a series of superb holes more representative of a parkland course. This provides a good contrast to Los Lagos, yet retains the need for excellent course management. Los Alcornoques is perhaps the most exposed to the elements of the three sides, and mixes up a selection of holes to test your nerve and accuracy.

Signature Holes Each of the nine holes has it’s own unique character and standout holes - whichever you play, you won’t be disappointed. The tricky par 3, 7th on Los Lagos is a challenge rewarded by its setting - a long iron or wood over a lake to the green which is protected by a bunker at the front. On Los Alcornoques, club selection is vital at both Par 3’s - depending on the wind the whole character of this course can change. The Par 4, 7th requires a solid drive before a second shot over a stream which cuts diagonaly between the fairway and green. One of our favourites!

The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern. There are no bonuses for going right however, so anything to the left side of the green is more than acceptable!

The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience. The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively.

Signature Holes Hole 4. La Cascada. Par 5. 516m. Robert Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green. Hole 17. Los Gabiones. Par 5. 490m. From a good driver, the second shot presents the player with a tantalising question: do you try to carry the water for a possible birdie or eagle, or lay up?

The final hole is long, with a slight incline and has the widest fairway on the course. Out of bounds on the left should not come into play. Although it does not appear to be very much uphill on the second shot, it is rare to see people over this green.

RCG Sotogrande is often voted to be among the top ten golf courses in Europe – and rightly so. “Sotogrande Old”, as it is called by the locals, boasts mature vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings. The greens are large with typical Trent Jones contours - and the tees are very long, some would say excessively so, but they allow for variations in pin placement and the length of hole.

La

The seventh is widely considered the best on the course. It doglegs to the left with out of bounds on the same side. The drive should be played slightly right of centre. A precise second shot is required to a narrow, well-guarded green. Any shot bouncing on the left edge of the green will kick towards the centre, so favour this side and stay dry!

Founded in 1964, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is located on prime golfing land close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. Anyone lucky enough to have played at one of Spain’s foremost members’ clubs will be able to confirm Robert Trent Jones was right to take pride in what is an extraordinarily good design.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play.

Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. Just when you think it can get no more difficult the 18th tee provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles. The drive on this 338m hole has to carry about 180m before it arrives out onto the fairway; anything less will require a re-load and three off the tee, and so on!

The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular. Only the 10th and 18th have water hazards, and a total of only 45 bunkers does not make things too difficult for the player. Even the trees, mainly olive, pine and palm do not obstruct the course to any great extent.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar. On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After the game wander into T’s Bar. Newly opened by Stuart. Relax and enjoy drinks and food on their sunny terrace.

Signature Holes Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres. Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!! Best Par 3: 12th, 176 metres. Long and to a raised green, the hole sits between 2 large mounds on either side so looks very sheltered. Be straight and long enough and you have a great chance of par but pull it left or push it right and you will struggle on this hole.

The objective of the course at Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest. The prettiest hole of the course, and one of the prettiest of the Costa del Sol, is the 8th, as acknowledged by the majority of the Club’s members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace.

Signature Holes Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. The majority of golfers will lay up to the right with their second shot to give themselves a wedge onto the green but a tough hole in every aspect. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water. We suggest hitting the green!

Signature Hole Hole 10. Par 4. Hcp. 18 267m • 247m • 235m The signature hole is a beautiful downhill short par 4 with the green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe with just a mid iron to the middle of a large fairway area, however you may feel that at only 250 meters downhill and the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. A straight one will make an eagle/birdie very possible - but just slightly out and you are looking at a 6. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!

La Resina

Situated in the beautiful Resina estate lies the sublime short course of La Resina. The 9 hole layout is made up of 2 par fours and 7 par 3’s. However don’t be fooled into thinking that you will have a round full of birdies and pars, as this course is challenging with a varied terrain of hills, lakes and extreme rough to overcome. Common to all the holes is the quality of the greens. As the greenkeepers come from Valderrama they are in sublime condition, and run perfectly true. We would highly recommend this course for all who want a nice quick 9 or 18 holes, or to all who want to improve their short game. Also a great course for beginners or high handicappers looking to improve their game before moving onto the larger courses. In all great fun and extremely good value for the Costa del Sol.

Signature Holes 3rd. Par 3, 133 metres. Stroke index 7 but we found it much tougher. The hole runs right over a gully with huge rough and has out of bounds to the left and behind the hole. If you hit the green you still have a lot of work to do as the green is on 2 levels and runs fairly steeply up from front to back. Two putting from anywhere outside 15 feet is good. 9th. Par 4, 224 metres yellow, 187 metres red. You tee off from high above the green, and with the clubhouse, lake and sea views behind the hole it is extremely pretty but also a lot of fun to approach the green in front of the clubhouse.

Without a doubt a star project since it was inaugurated in 2007. It has been a real challenge for its designer, D. Cristóbal Guerrero. The specialist press has deemed it a golf course for large competitions because of its length and the technical skill it demands. Set out between the mountains and with magnificent views of the sea and the Resort, this par-73 layout extends to almost 7,000 metres along fairways lined by pines, orange trees, cypresses and holm oaks. It is a glorious place to play golf. Blessed by superb drainage, it’s also perfect all year-round.

Each of the 18 holes represents the garden of a Tuscan Villa, where you will find Roman columns, classical statues and marble bridges on the fairways and corners of the course. Each hole is also defined by its own tree: cypress, orange, nisper, jacaranda, pine, olive, chestnut, pomegranate and many more.

Bel-Air

Mundo Studios

Alferini Golf Course

There are few better indications of quality than the honour of hosting a major event in your inaugural year and this was what happened at Flamingos. The Dr Antonio Garcia Garrido designed layout welcomed the European Senior PGA 2002 Championship final, and again in 2003 and 2004. With spectacular views of the sea and mountains, Africa and Gibraltar, a large natural lake around which the whole resort has been built and luxuriant vegetation, this course is one you’ll also want to keep coming back to.

Course Information 18 holes, Par 71 5652m • 5354m • 4800m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving range, Putting green, Clubhouse, Restaurant

Signature Holes Hole 3: Par 3. 193m •165m • 109m Probably one of the best Par 3’s on the Costa del Sol. Very intimidating, but a good shot slightly on the right of the Pin will take you safely home. If not, dropping zone, close to the green. Hole 4: Par 5. 425m • 419m • 391m A drive then a dilemma: do you go for the green - Glory or Misery - or do you lag your second shot on to the intermediary plateau? Then, to go to the green, you will pas across a lovely rustic bridge and discover the glorious waterfall cascading over natural marble stone.

Monte Mayor Golf opened in 1989. Designed by José Cancedo, this is a fantastic and challenging Golf Course known as one of the most spectacular on the Costa del Sol. The Golf course is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The valley in which Monte Mayor is laid out clings to the slope of Monte Mayor. The ruins of a 10th Century Moorish Fort crown the summits of Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor’s Fairways are of Bermuda 419. The driving range is breathtaking. Buggies are included with the Green Fee. Starting times every 15 minutes. Amongst the Pros, Alex Cejka, the course record holder (66), practiced a lot here and enjoyed to work all his shots at Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor is frequently voted into the Top 5 as a golf experience not to be missed.

The Marbella Club Hotel Golf Resort is a world class golf course that exceeds even the highest expectations. With a total length of 6,247m, the course is enhanced by carefully contoured fairways, beautiful waterfalls, lakes and strategically placed bunkers, as well as undulating and protected greens, maintained to perfection. The in-house British P.G.A. Professional, Gary Vaulter, has extensive experience teaching all aspects of the game at all levels of ability. The Club offers golf of the most exclusive nature, with start times on average 30 mins apart.

Built and maintained to the highest standards, this full length par 36, 9 hole layout is an absolute joy to play. Always perfectly manicured and with incredible putting surfaces, designer Roderick Segar has shown a great understanding and sympathy of the gently undulating terrain on which the course sits. Quick, true greens are up there with the best, and give the opportunity for the greenkeepers to put in some devilish pin positions due to the combination of slopes and hazards. But this course is perfect for golfers of any level.

Guadalmina has two 18 hole golf courses and a par 3 nine hole golf course, a covered driving range for 40 players and a chipping and putting green. Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge.

Hole 6. Par 5. • 442m • 435m • 383m

The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary! Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball.

With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course.

Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Championships winner who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With its wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well.

Signature Holes With so many great holes to choose from, picking some out comes down to individual preference. We think that the opening stretch is beautifully crafted and sets the rhythm for the round. The first hole is a fairly short par 4 which gets things off to a nice gentle start - before being faced with a deceivingly tough par 3 where club selection is crucial to hit a well bunkered green. The third hole is a long par 4 that often plays into the wind, making reaching the green in two a task in itself. This is followed by another well designed par 4 where good position from the tee is essential to have a chance of hitting the green in regulation.

Atalaya Golf NEW COURSE

Course Information New Course: 18 holes, Par 71 5142m • 5044m • 4356m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Trolleys, Electric trolleys, Driving Range, Practice areas, Golf lessons, Kiosk, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar

Signature Holes There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. The par 4 opening hole sets off from the middle of the Old Course, and requires an accurate drive with trees protecting either side. Doing so will leave a short iron into a raised green. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy and direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience.

Signature Holes Hole 3 - Par 4, 361m: Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13 - Par 5, 458m: Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green. Hole 15 - Par 4, 376m: One of the best par 4’s on the course. The fairway veers slightly to the leftm leading to a wide green with numerous downhill slopes.

La Quinta Golf Club has 27 holes, divided in 3 courses of 9 holes, which can be combined to have more playing options. Each are integrated in the natural surroundings of the area, from which one can view the Mediterranean sea and the mountains that encircle Marbella. Course A, San Pedro, has open fairways and short yardage, therefore, woods and long irons are mainly used in this course. Course B, Ronda, a fabulous course with narrow fairways and more difficult greens. Surrounded by amazing houses and villas from the Spanish high society, this uphill course leads to the Ronda mountains. Finally, Course C, Guadaiza, although easier than course B, there are many slopes and a few dog legs. There is also La Quinta Golf Academy - equipped with the most modern facilities, such as the digital swing analysis system.

Quality & Service The landscaping and the course quality together with the quality of the services are the main objectives of the renovation project that the club has been working on for the last three years. The quality is also clearly shown in the services offered by the club. A good example is the interval between each tee-time, which has been amplified for the comfort and benefit of the players - and the club has also incorporated a Bag Drop service in order to simplify the check-in process from the moment the player arrives to club parking until they are on the first tee.

Los Naranjos is one of Spains best golf courses. World famous golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. considered it one of his finest European designs and it is indeed a true Championship course. Measuring 6.500 meters from the professional tees it features wide fairways, strategically placed hazards and large undulating greens. Suitable for all levels of players, Los Naranjos is firmly established as one of Spain’s most popular golf courses, welcoming visitors all year round. Noted for its beautiful clubhouse, welcoming atmosphere and large orange groves. The Los Naranjos greens are firm and fast, recently renewed they feature A4 Agrostis bent grass. The fairways and tees are Bermuda 328, an ideal surface for a warm climate. The tees are terraced and long with expansive fairways on the front nine, and big undulating greens.

Signature Holes The fourth is possibly one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, with a green guarded by a small river and big bunkers to the left, right and behind. The ninth is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. From a solid tee shot you still have a long iron to the green - bogey here is a good result! The famous finishing hole is a long par 5, with the clubhouse behind the green. Before reaching the green there are several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed before you can finally hole out.

Overall there’s a wide mix of holes, characterised by mostly wide fairways - although you’ll have big problems if you stray either side of them. All the holes have highly individual, apt names. The second, for instance, is called ‘Uresandi’, the Baroque word for a lot of water - and three lakes certainly is a lot of water. The eleventh is Las Aguilas (Eagles) as the hole is so close to the mountain that twitchers may catch sight of one. Although the club is private, visitors are welcome all year. It’s advisable to telephone in advance - this course is very popular.

Many will choose to play an iron from the tee for position and take their chances for a birdie on the subtle contours of the green. From the elevated tee, water impedes the narrow landing area of the fairway on the right, with a bunker protecting the green at the front. A back pin position will take some creative shot making and spin control in order to get close.

Most visiting golfers have heard of Aloha, it’s one of the best known courses on the Costa del Sol. Like many of the other older ones it has seen substantial improvements in recent years, particularly the replanting of the fairways and a general upgrading of the clubhouse and changing rooms.

Signature Holes

This course has been in existence for over fifty years and was named after the Real river, which comes into play on several of the fairways. It’s a scenic course even though it is, on the whole, flat. Inaugurated in 1965, designed by Javier Arana, this magnificent 18-hole par 72 golf course is set in a beautiful sloping valley with challenging greens.

Hole 5. Par 4. 387m • 383m • 343m A tough par 4 where the Rio Real river is in play. The tee shot is driven away from the Mediterranean sea with the prevailing wind coming from your left. Going down the right side of the fairway leaves a shorter second, but a grassy knoll slightly impedes the view to the green from here. The putting surface is nestled amongst the trees on the other side of the river, which is a genuine hazard. A lay up area is provided for those who require three (or more!) shots to get there.

On the par 4 tenth don’t worry if you don’t reach the dogleg on the fairway with the first shot - nobody is perfect! Choose your second shot to the green - if you play short it will be much easier. If you decide to go for it - over the pines and hill - hold your breath until fellowplayers audibly confirm your success. The par 5 thirteenth is the longest and most spectacular hole. Imitate Tiger Woods by reaching the green in three strokes if you can.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities.

Signature Holes The course offers a great deal of variety, with a mixture of different length par 4’s which give the opportunity to strategize from the tee. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards and hillsides to contend with should you be wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182 metres from the men’s, and a massive 208 from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills.

Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu. El Olivo offers a creative menu, incorporating international cuisine (from France, Italy or Asia) in an attempt to avoid the “regional food” cliché.

Signature Holes Signature holes have to be special and the second hole at Greenlife cetainly is. When played from the back tee you have little to aim for: a small green surrounded by water and trees. The hole has a touch of the 17th at Sawgrass to it. We can only advise you select the correct club, aim straight and swing true in order to make the putting surface. Good luck! The fifth is a pleasure to play from the back tee. Trees surround the tee and entry to the fairway. A tree filled canyon awaits an errant tee shot and, with out of bounds all along the right and a small green, only the best shot will prevail.

Greenlife Golf is one of the hidden treasures amongst the courses on the Costa del Sol. A sublime nine-hole par three course set in the beautiful surroundings of Elvira Hills, it boasts beautifully manicured fairways and greens lined with olive and cork trees. The variable terrain makes a complicated test for golfers of all levels. You will find longer courses on the coast but none that provide such a challenge to your short game.

The 9th is the longest hole, at 165 metres, and to hit the green only the best shot will suffice. Play it from the back tee - anything else will spoil it. Out of bounds runs along the left hand side of the fairway towards a two tier green with bunkers right and left. If you miss the green, expect a difficult approach requiring a lot of skill. You won’t find many par 3’s as hard as this, so play it as a par 4. You’ve been warned!

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north. The splendid 19th century clubhouseepitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking. The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

Signature Holes The 7th is the first of the par-3’s. At 196 meters off an elevated tee not many players will reach the green - especially if the wind is against! The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or adjacent bunker. The feature here is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall to its right. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green, next to the 12th tee.

Cabopino Golf is situated on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little marina of Cabopino. The course was designed by Juan Ligues Creus. The layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf we find the excellent facilities of the golf Academy and driving range. The driving range has a capacity for 60 players, with a depth of 250 mts, and 160 mts, wide distance markers, bunkers, and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practise session. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups.

Signature Holes The course with 5.170 mts, and par 71 has three par 3’s, two par 5’s and the rest par 4’s. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 200m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.

This short 9 hole par 3 golf course is designed by Enrique Canales and opened in 1990. Great views and an undulated course with mature vegetation make La Siesta a pleasant visit. Although a private club, visiting golfers are always welcome. It is certainly a course to sharpen up your short game. The distances vary considerably - from as little as 51m off the men’s tee at the second to 175m at the 7th (possibly requiring a wood for weaker hitters).

La Noria combines a number of technical holes with others where distance is a factor. Three magnificent lakes and a river all come into play. The 2nd is a dog-leg left, 225m par-4. The two-tiered green is protected by the river to the front, a lake to the left and a picturesque waterfall at the back. The 438m par-5 seventh has a bunker to the right of the landing area. It’s important to place the second shot strategically, since the approach is across a river to a splitlevel green surrounded by bunkers.

Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed. This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink!

Signature Hole Hole 6. Par 3. • 163m • 156m • 134m Stroke index 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees, standing like sentries hither and yon, spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and one which will remain in the memory bank for many a long day.

All three La Cala courses were designed by the renowned course architect, Cabell B. Robinson who was previously employed as Robert Trent Jones’ designer in Europe. Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

La Cala Resort Campo Asia

Course Information 18 holes, Par 72 5925m • 5412m • 4467m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel

Signature Holes The par-3, second, offering panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The reachable par-5, 14th. The approach shot needs to be very accurate as the green is protected by water on the left and is heavily bunkered on the right. The par-5, 18th, a real risk or reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green. However, it is a risky shot that could make or break a round.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated, well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control.

This course contrasts with Campo Asia and Campo America with multiple tee positions, wider fairways and bigger, more receptive greens. They are not severely contoured but are wellbunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6,014 metres. The layout of 14 of the holes is visible from the tees that also offer fantastic views of the resort and the mountains. The Ojen river plays a part in eight holes, cutting across three fairways. There is one main bridge that measures 45 metres and four smaller bridges over the river. In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, Europe’s only 3-D, TaylorMade Performance Lab, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

Signature Holes The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This still leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green. The par-5, 11th is the longest hole, measuring 524 metres. It requires a strong tee shot to avail of the contours and set up the second from the fairway. Anything left will end up in the river. The 14th is at the maximum limit of what is allowed for a par 3 at 233 metres.

Course Information 18 holes, Par 72 5986m • 5654m • 4860m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 34 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Putting green, Clubhouse, Restaurant

Signature Holes 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Difficult decision: keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. Beware of the arroyo (stream) in front of the green. This hole is a true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second nine opens with a Par 5 with a generously wide fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker, followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the barrestaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean.

Signature Holes The eighth is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. You tee off from an elevated position with a dry bed water hazard running down the right hand side of the hole, an iron off the tee is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par-3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off is from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below. The green slopes from back to front so avoid going too long – it plays a bit shorter then its yardage.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific. Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

Signature Holes

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

The 8th is the longest par 3 at Mijas Golf Club. 209 meters from the pro tee, 200m from the yellows and 143m from the ladies. There is water is everywhere, so the safe shot on this hole is to play short of the green.

No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

Signature Holes The second hole is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The eighth might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green. Be Happy. Settle for a four. Now you can start thinking about the long and difficult 15th. Prepare yourself for a long green and settle for a five, one over par.

Los Olivos also designed by Trent Jones and built by Cabell Robinson, opened in 1984. Los Olivos complements Los Lagos, but offers a tighter challenge. This par 70 course measures 6386 yards (5840 metres) was completely refurbished by Cabell Robinson during the season 2000-2001, following Trent Jones’ original design concept. The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world.

Perched in the hills inland from La Cala de Mijas, with panoramic views over Fuengirola to the East and Mijas to the West lies the delightful new 9 hole course of Cerrado del Aguila. With a superb driving range and practice area and a delightful all wooden temporary clubhouse (new clubhouse is under construction) you will feel at ease as soon as you arrive. The holes all have generous fairways that are in superb condition, as are all of the greens and tees. There are several small lakes on the course that are brought into play on a number of the holes, and they too are all very impressive to look at, bordered neatly by large rocks. The course is not overly long at 5,504 metres off the yellow tee’s, but with 2 par 5’s well over 500 metres having to be played twice it will provide a test for even the longest of hitters.

Signature Holes Toughest hole: The stroke index 1 hole, the par 5 2nd & 11th. Only 502 metres off the yellow tees, but being uphill all the way to the green it would be impossible to hit the green in two even for the monster hitters. If you get a par here you will have done extremely well. Best Par 3: 4th & 13th is 133 metres in length and the tee box sits high above the green. With water in front and to the left of the green it looks very impressive. The green is very large so even if you find it off the tee you may still have your work cut out to make par. In all this is a great par 3.

For nearest to the pin try the very short 3rd hole to give everybody a chance - don’t be put off that Seve Ballasteros once scored a 7 here. If you’re driving well you can cut the corner from the elevated tee on the par 4 5th. Another challenging hole is the par 4 15th with an iron off the tee for position then 150m ( 165 yards) all carry to the green.

Torrequebrada golf course opened in 1976, and was designed by Jose Pepe Gancedo, one of Spain´s most promising golfers. Torrequebrada is considered one of the best courses in Spain and was host to the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979. Golf Torrequebrada is now leading the way on the coast to provide a top level service to all golfers ensuring that their golf is enjoyed.

In 2007 there were some major changes at the club, primary the total replacement of the irrigation system on the course which has made a fantastic difference to the condition to the fairways and greens. New Pro Shop, Caddymaster and changing rooms have been updated to make the areas more appealing and modern to all golfers and mirroring the standard expected from a golf course of this standard.

Signature Holes

This superb nine hole pitch & putt course with two-tier driving range has recently been added to the Aymerich Golf Management portfolio. Holes range from just 46 meters to 100 meters, but plenty of hazards and interesting features make it a fun layout. Aymerich are keen to encourage current players and visitors to take their golfing experience to the next level as well as giving them confidence to progress from the nine hole to full eighteen at other Aymerich courses.

Hole 7. Par 3. 59m. A hole that demands accuracy due to the three bunkers surrounding the green.

The new improved golf school will cover everything from golf theory and etiquette to technique. Adults and young golfers who are just starting out will be given all the help they need to get the most out of their game.

Hole 9. Par 3. 77m. The green is well defended by three bunkers to the right and a lake to the left. The fairly flat green shouldn’t cause too many complications.

Hole 8. Par 3. 100m. The longest and most complicated hole on the course, with views to the sea, and a waterfall that crosses the left of the hole, making the green very narrow. The green is also defended by two bunkers to the right.

Signature Holes The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play. The most difficult hole at stroke index 1 is the par 4 9th. At 404m from the back tees, it is a long way, uphill to a raised green which slopes from back to front. Take plenty of club!

Alhaurín Golf is a truly beautiful course overlooking the Mijas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Apart from its magnificent Severiano Ballesteros designed par 72 course, Alhaurín Golf features superb practising facilities with a spacious natural grass driving range, putting green, chipping green and a pretty 9 hole par 3 academy course. The course is made up of 5 par fives, 5 par threes and 8 par fours providing a balanced game for low and high handicappers alike. Water only comes into play on three holes and greens are lightly guarded by bunkers in most cases. The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente.

Signature Holes

Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature.

26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. This par three is less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too much to the right.

13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind that cannot be seen from the fairway.

27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

From Malaga airport. On the Algeciras / Motril-GranadaSevilla highway, towards Malaga, take the exit Parque Technlogico-CartamaCampanillas (near Carrefour shopping centre) and after aproximately 7 kms, take the exit Mercamalaga (House in ruins as landmark). Turn right at the intersection and follow the signs “Campo de Golf”. The course is located 4 km from that point. Total distance from airport approx. 15 kms.

Guadalhorce Golf Club was inaugurated in 1990 and is typified by its friendly family atmosphere. Its impressive Andalusian mansion was built at the end of the 18th century, and is a green oasis in the midst of the busy capital. Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members. The Par 72 course was originally designed by Kosti Kuronen, but much of it has now been re-designed by one of its most famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.

Signature Holes The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river. The 14th hole is a par 4 with a tree in the centre of the fairway. A difficult green, with an awkward approach and undulating greens.

Signature Holes The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream. 14 is, again, a par-5 - if you manage to avoid the sandy rough off the tee, water protecting the green demands a good, straight shot in. Eighteen is one of the trickiest par-4’s along the coast! A double dog-leg, with a dense area of tree waiting for any drive straying left.

By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from 18th or 19th to Malaga airport.

Of varied design and agreeably surrounded by trees and water, which serves to compliment the natural beauty of the area. Some of the holes are spectacular. The 7th with its impressive views of the sea. The 17th hole, par three, is surrounded by a large lake which makes it a truly impressive green. Baviera Golf Caleta de Vélez, Malaga

Course Information 18 holes, Par 71 5609m • 5330m • 4744m Handicap: Men 30, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes Facilities: Clubhouse, Driving range, Golf academy, Trolleys, Buggies

Signature Holes If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet. Lastly at the 18th. Do you play with slice? If you do, hallelujah! A hole where you will feel comfortable from the tee.

Baviera Golf has been designed by José María Cañizares, the prestigious professional golfer. Cañizares is one of our most international and charismatic golfers in whose record are 5 tournaments of the European circuit and 2 world championships as well as several participations in the Ryder Cup. Baviera Golf is an even course characterized by its wide greens with many movements and the great variety of obstacles which offer a big range of strokes and an ideal design for all types of handicap.

History, Art & Culture

The province of Cadiz is the southernmost of the Iberian Peninsula . It has a perimeter of 586 Km, 260 of which are coastline. It has a surface area of 7,385 Km, divided up into 44 municipal areas. Its population totals just over one million, with the density being just over the national average.

The province played an important role in the discovery and colonization of America during the 15th century. Christopher Columbus and other famous sailors set sail from these ports on their voyages to the New Continent.

Many cultures have left their mark throughout Cadiz ‘s long history. Examples of this are the “Tajo de las Figuras” cave paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz ‘s Museum; the Roman remains of “Baelo Claudia” at Tarifa, and the “Carteia” at San Roque. The province has over 30 castles and fortresses, many of which are in a good state of repair.

The 18th century, Cadiz’s “Golden Century” was dominated by the growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character and introducing new liberal ideas and opening the door for democracy which came to fruition with the drafting of the constitution in 1812. The province of Cadiz is an exceptional and unique area, whose qualities will delight those people seeking tourism that reflects true cultural, festive and ecological values, together with the authentic and essentially Andalusian customs and monuments.

Cadiz has an ancient history. The Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than three thousand years ago. It was here that they built the old ”Gadir” (Cadiz ) around 1,100 B.C., making it the oldest capital in the West. The Romans and the Visigoths also left their marks here. After 711, it was ruled by the Muslims until Alfonso X “The Wise” reconquered it in the middle of the 13th century and it became part of the Kingdom of Castilla.

In the field of religious art, the province also boasts an extraordinary collection of monuments. Good examples of this are the Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz and Jerez. As far as paintings are concerned, examples of works by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many of the province’s churches and museums.

Villa Nueva’s beautifully designed course, set in peerless surroundings, is destined to become a benchmark among golfers. The course is pleasant for all levels of players, with different tees per hole. The generous, softly undulating greens offer many possible flag positions, and average 600 sq. m in size. The course which is relatively flat and open, uses bunkers and lakes to create a visual impact and excitement in the round. The middle of the course focuses on golf with plenty of vegetation and pine trees, whilst certain eye-catching areas create a traditional Scottish feel to the landscape. The golf course has been designed with a great finish, with holes 16, 17 and 18 all featuring water, which will be appeal to competitors of every level.

Hole 16: Par 4, 384 m This hole starts to create the appealing, difficult and decisive end of the course. It is a 4 par flanked by trees and the traditional bushes of the land. Besides, the green is defended by bunkers and the lake at the end, ensuring the player is obliged to think about their second stroke. This is probably the most difficult hole after 14th. Hole 18: Par 5, 461 m An intrincate hole, with a 90º dog-leg and a great bunker that surrounds a huge lake in play off the tee. A second lake for the 2nd shot makes this hole the dramatic 18th which a golf course of this level deserves.
