Beautiful rural setting with stunning views 18 holes of peaceful undulating Spanish countryside boasting stunning sea views from many areas of the course, Estepona Golf provides a fair test enjoyed by players of all standards. Fantastic greens on a wide variety of holes Renowned for our superb, consistent putting surfaces, the course features very strong par 3’s which include the difficult but beautiful 14th hole and its Sierra Bermeja mountain range backdrop. The tempting signature hole is the short par 4 10th where the green is almost surrounded by water. At only 250 meters from an elevated tee, it can be played by simply laying up with a mid iron - but many brave souls are teased into going for it! Knowledgeable, friendly & welcoming staff The English owned golf course has for many years focused on the visiting golfer from overseas, with our multilingual staff always offering a warm friendly welcome.

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

Hole 1 - Par 4 - 390 mts Good looking opening Par 4, slight dog leg downhill. You must keep your drive to the right of the bunker which will leave a short to mid iron in for your second off a flat lie. Longer hitters will be left with a short iron in off a sloping lie to a large green. Hole 3 - Par 4 - 380 mts Stunning views from the tee across the course and out to sea. A very elevated tee area can turn this into a short Par 4, but played into the prevailing wind par is a good score. Club selection is key on the second shot, made harder by the fact that the green sits well below you. Though well bunkered, the putting surface is large and relatively flat. Hole 4 - Par 4 - 290 mts We’d recommend a long iron or fairway wood to place the ball in the middle of the fairway, aiming slightly left and allowing the gentle slope to take the ball towards the middle. You are then faced with a short iron to a well bunkered raised green. Fairly straight forward Par 4 and a definite birdie chance for the low handicapper.

Featured Course

Hole 5 - Par 3 - 157 mts Lovely short Par 3 with an elevated tee looking over a large well bunkered green. Take one club less than you think, aim well and a par should appear on your card. Hole 6 - Par 5 - 449 mts Short Par 5. An easy tee shot to a wide open fairway, though a small water hazard awaits anything too far right. The second shot is more difficult as the closer you get to the green the narrower the fairway becomes. Longer hitters will be enticed to have a go in two. Small elevated green with large bunkers placed left and right makes a tight landing area. This particular green slopes from right to left so you could be faced with a tricky speedy putt or two. Hole 7 - Par 3 - 174 mts Good Par 3 of average distance. Well bunkered and a lot of dead ground in front of the green, so a good idea to take one more club than you think. A large slope runs right to left across the green. You should aim for the right half of the green and allow the slope to do the rest, too far left of the green and you may have to reload

as a ditch awaits. A par here is a good score for any level of golfer. Hole 8 - Par 4 - 360 mts (Pictured above). Short Par 4 made more difficult by the fact that it is uphill for the first part. Many balls are killed by the slope leaving a longer distance into the green than the yardage suggests. Once on top a flat generous fairway awaits with a large sloping green to aim at. The green has many severe breaks, and from some areas can be a very tough 2 putt. Hole 9 - Par 4 - 327 mts A severe left to right dogleg, where your objective should be to reach the corner from the tee. Depending on the wind, it could take anything from a mid iron to a fairway wood. This is a narrow fairway with a large bunker on the left. Aiming right should allow the bank to kick the ball back to the centre. A good tee shot may still leave a blind 2nd shot to a raised sloping green. Be careful, as going long with the approach leaves an incredibly difficult chip or putt, where the combination of green pace and slope will give you mental images of Augusta National.

Hole 2 - Par 5 - 440 mts Long Par 5 with a large slope from left to right and a hazard running down the right side. Keeping the tee shot left will leave you with a long 2nd off a sloping lie to a large fairway lay up area. A short third shot is then played uphill to a well bunkered flat green. The green can be reached in two by the longer hitters, but this hole often plays into the wind.

Hole 14 - Par 3 - 190 mts This Par 3 is one of the most beautiful and difficult you will find anywhere. The Sierra Bermeja Mountain range sits behind whilst out of bounds runs all the way down the right hand side of the hole. A narrow but long green awaits a great shot, however it has two tiers and is very quick so the fun is not over once you hit the green.

Featured Course

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 267 mts The signature hole is a beautiful downhill short Par 4 with a green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe with just a mid iron to the middle of a large fairway area, however you may feel at only 250 metres downhill with the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. A straight one will make an eagle/birdie very possible but just slightly out and you could be looking at a 6. Hole 11 - Par 5 - 475 mts Nice tee shot over a little water to a raised fairway. Keep it left and allow the slope to carry the ball into the middle which will leave a straight forward second shot to a generous fairway and a short 3rd to a raised, well bunkered green. Longer hitters will feel that this offers a good birdie opportunity. Hole 12 - Par 4 - 313 mts Short Par 4 with a wide open fairway, keep left and you will be have a short 2nd shot in to a narrow green. This sounds easy but do not be fooled by the distance and lack of hazards, as the fun begins on the green. Being narrow and elevated it is always difficult to get your second

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

close to the hole and the tendency is to go long leaving a treacherously quick down hill putt or chip. Four here is a good score but you always feel like you should have done better‌ Hole 13 - Par 4 - 345 mts Great looking golf hole, all uphill and with a stunning mountain back drop it plays its entire yardage and more. Wide open fairway, but club selection is everything on the second shot as anything beyond the hole will make for a stressful time. The green slopes a lot from back to front and tends to be very quick. Par is always a very good score here. Hole 15 - Par 4 - 335 mts (Pictured above). Nice Par 4 with an elevated tee looking down a slight left to right dog leg. A feature of the hole is an enormous rock placed in the middle of the fairway which marks out the perfect line. A good tee shot with a long iron or fairway wood will leave a mid iron in. Taking driver can leave a very short second, but invariably it will be off a downhill slope making it difficult to hold the green. Although an easy hole on paper, it can be especially tricky when the wind blows.

Hole 16 - Par 3 - 185 mts Another good looking Par 3, with a large sloping green which is surrounded by bunkers. Out of bounds runs the full length of the hole on the right hand side. A well struck mid to long iron should leave you in the middle of the green with a straight forward 2 putt to follow. Hole 17 - Par 5 - 512 mts Long Par 5 that normally plays into the prevailing wind. From an exposed and elevated tee area you play to a wide open fairway that slopes from right to left. Take care to keep right of the fairway when laying up with the second, as the slopes can push the ball towards the rough on the left. There is a large bunker short and left of the raised green, which with large slopes from right to left and front to back it is very difficult to 2 putt. Hole 18 - Par 4 - 304 mts A short Par 4 on paper, but do not let that fool you as it requires some sound planning. The second looks very inviting to the largest green on the course, but again it has a twist. Depending on the pin placement the green holds many subtle breaks and it is easy to 3 putt. Full concentration required.

GOLFINO www.golfino.com

“The White Label golfer is young or at least is young at heart and uncompromising in his or her attitude to the game.”

The GOLFINO Collection modules (themes) are presented under the three different labels White, Green and Black from autumn 2011. With this GOLFINO’s USP remains, for all collections, the strong mix between hightech-function and carefully balanced, elegant fashion. The focus point is different from label to label. The golfing world has not just grown stronger in the last few years, but it has also become more diverse. As Europe’s no.1 for golf wear GOLFINO structures its choice accordingly. The core of the collection is the Green Label, the elegant golf wear for ambitious golfers, which is at home in the resorts of this world. Green Label offers optimal comfort on the

course and an acute taste in 25 years of established GOLFINO tradition, with which one can also make a great figure in the club house. With GOLFINO’s White Label the active sportiness is the focus point (Performance Wear). The White Label golfer is young or at least is young at heart and uncompromising in his or her attitude to the game. So that not just new drivers, club heads or golf balls are incorporated into their (golfing)life, but also technical golf wear of the highest quality. That means looking cool is not just a minor matter. Black Label stands for premium casual wear, which interprets the newest trends in sport

and gives one an insight in to the exclusive world of golf. This fashion is not necessarily there to be worn on the golf course but rather internationally and cosmopolitan and on the Bond Street or the Via Montenapoleone at home. This is where the ambitious customer feels addressed, for whom a trendy look is part of their lifestyle, golfer or not. All of the collections are structured into modules (themes) from 15 to 20 articles, from hats to socks, which enables the coordination of outfits. Solely in the White Label half modules are offered, which focus on a special group of high-tech-articles. Visit: www.golfino.com

Alcaidesa Links

Facilities Driving range, Putting green, Golf Lessons, Buggies, Clubhouse, Restaurant

Requirements Handicap Limit: Men 28, Ladies 36 Soft spikes only

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are

the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean

sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards. The New Clubhouse: Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avant-garde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity.

Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional. Opened in 1991, and designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the Old Course is rarely outside the top 5 courses in Spain. The first 9 holes wind through Cork Oaks whilst the back 9

are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play. The San Roque Club is almost unmatched for scenery & elegance. Membership is about exclusivity and the sense of belonging to a family of privileged golfers benefitting from the unique experience the club has to offer. La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience.

The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop. Signature Hole: Hole 17. Par 4. A test even to players of the highest level. A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships

- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.

On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

The objective of Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest.

members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace. Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water.

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -

but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens.

It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had

for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes

including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales

Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a

good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.

The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.

The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water.

The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed. This is a family orientated club, where all golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied

tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,

well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is

over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,

even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

Cambio de Sentido El Faro

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging

course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and

beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best

courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.

The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

On the Algeciras / Motril-Granada-Sevilla highway, towards Malaga, take the exit Parque Technlogico-Cartama-Campanillas (near Carrefour shopping centre) and after aproximately 7 kms, take the exit Mercamalaga (House in ruins as landmark). Turn right at the intersection and follow the signs “Campo de Golf”. The course is located 4 km from that point. Total distance from airport approx. 15 kms.

Guadalhorce Golf Club was inaugurated in 1990 and is typified by its friendly family atmosphere. Its impressive Andalusian mansion was built at the end of the 18th century, and is a green oasis in the midst of the busy capital.

famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.

Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.

The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.

The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic

Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
